▼ This dissertation studies wholesale and sector-wise electricity
demand in South
Korea. Electricity
demand analysis provides useful insights for
market performance evaluation, load prediction,
market restructuring, tariff schedule design, etc. In recent years, there has been a heated debate in Korea on how
to restructure the electricity
market, since low reserve margins that have been in operation (6.7% on average in 2010 for instance) have been threatening the stability and integrity
of the electricity system. This dissertation thus attempts to address three important
questions about Korean electricity
demand-side
market restructuring:
(1) What are the estimates of the price elasticity of electricity
demand in the wholesale and retail markets, including the residential, industrial, and commercial sectors? (2) How do inter-temporal price changes affect electricity consumption, and what are the estimates of the inter-temporal electricity cross-price elasticities in the wholesale
market? (3) Except for the electricity price, what other factors affect electricity consumption in the wholesale and retail markets, including the residential, industrial, and commercial sectors?
In Chapter 2, I review current studies on electricity
demand estimations, with the emphasis on price elasticity after the year 2000. Twenty papers (selected on the basis of the author's
judgment) are summarized and evaluated, along with six papers that are discussed in relatively more detail. I also present evaluations and critiques of these works.
In Chapter 3, I briefly introduce the Korean electricity
market and how it functions. In Chapter 4, I investigate the underlying features of the data in each
market and sector and present these features both graphically and statistically.
In Chapter 5, I study the wholesale electricity
market. Under the Real Time Pricing (RTP) structure, I discuss the model specification with respect to hourly consumption data with a consideration of aggregate utilization behaviors to control the complicated cyclical consumption patterns. Identification is established when the exclusion condition is not satisfied in the
demand and supply system. The estimated real-time aggregate price elasticity, based on the whole sample, is -0.0034, the corresponding long-run price elasticity is -0.0640, and
the estimated cross-price elasticities within the previous twenty-two hours are all negative, suggesting complementarity price effects.
Price elasticities are also affected by the size of responsive customers. The effects of
interruptible service operated by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and large buyers in the wholesale
market with on-site generators on the
demand curve are not detected
based on a smooth transition model. Price elasticities with regard to each hour within a day are also estimated. Temperature and different types of the day also affect aggregate electricity consumption.
In Chapter 6, I study the retail electricity
market, with a focus on the residential, industrial, and commercial…

▼ Women sports leagues are currently facing the daunting challenge of becoming a successful standalone entity. To ensure the future success of women sports leagues, and particularly the WNBA, it is imperative that more research attention be
given to developing a better understanding of consumers of women’s sports. A clearer picture of sports consumers’ decision-making process is expected to assist league administrators and marketers in developing strategies to build consumer interest and a
loyal fan base. To this end, the purpose of this study is to fill the gap in the literature by examining the structural relationships among socio-motivation, market demand, satisfaction, and consumption of WNBA game events. The current results contribute
to the existing literature on sports consumer behaviors by developing the Motivation-Market Demand-Satisfaction-Consumption multistage consumer decision-making process in sport. By conceptualizing motivation as an antecedent of the multistage consumer
decision-making process in sport and analyzing the subsequent stages, a much deeper understanding of sports consumers’ decision-making process has been obtained.

▼ STIVER, MARK ELLIOTT. Niche
Market Research Strategies Focusing on the Identification of Latent
Demand Opportunities. (Under the direction of Dr. Nancy Cassill and Dr. William Oxenham).
The United States textile and apparel industry is currently facing considerable challenges due to increasing trade liberalization, which has led to a dramatic increase in lower priced imports. For firms in this sector to remain competitive, they need to find ways to differentiate themselves. One way of doing this is through niche marketing. However, many companies do not know where or how to start identifying potential markets that would match their core competencies. This becomes even more complicated when the potential
market is based on latent
demand, meaning the consumers have not voiced a need for a particular product.
The purpose of this research is to examine the research methodologies successful niche marketing companies use to identify potential niche markets and latent
demand. This was completed through both quantitative surveys and interviews with firms that have a successful niche marketing strategy. The results of this research were used to develop a procedural model that the US textile and apparel firms can incorporate into their overall research and development process in order to identify niche markets and/or products directly related to their core competencies. The results provided ITT member companies with a framework that they can use to identify and evaluate new
market opportunities, and therefore, be better positioned to compete in the increasingly competitive global marketplace.

▼ Master Monetary and Financial Economics
The aim of this paper is to show how the evolution of financial technology affects the welfare in the economy. On the empirical side, I construct a time series for the costs of financial services, and I find that the evolution shows a decreasing trend in the period analyzed. In addition, the new statistical tool goes a long way to explaining US M1 money demand. I find that the financial costs became significantly lower after major financial innovation events had taken place. Then I study how financial innovation, understood as a decrease in portfolio adjustment costs, affects macro variables and welfare.

▼ Biotehničke nauke-Trgovina drvetom i ekonomika
prerade drveta / Biotechnological sciences-Timber trade and
economics of wood processing
proizvodi, a u okviru njih lepljeno lamelirano drvo (LLD).
lamelirano drvo, unakrsno lamelirano drvo, lamelirana furnirska
njihove potrošnje i intenziviranje proizvodnje.
da ti novi trendovi u Evropi mogu da otvore nove razvojne
mogućnosti za drvnu industriju Srbije. Primarna prerada drveta u
prevazići i unaprediti kroz ugradnju rezane graĎe u pojedine
kompozitne proizvode od drveta i njihovim izvozom. Teţnja Srbije za
članstvom u EU će u bliskoj budućnosti kreirati politički i
razvoj...

▼ This study aimed at exploring Demand of Swedish Tourists towards Ethiopian tourist destinations. The author has tried his level best in identifying the demands discrepancies of Swedish tourists’ preferences if they are offered a visit tours as same time by Ethiopian Tourism Sector and others African countries namely; Tanzanian, Egyptian, South African and Kenyan Tourism Authority. In caring out this study, both qualitative and quantitative research method is being used and the most important data is sourced by primary data collecting method using interviews, Surveys, and by secondary data utilizing literatures collected from books, Journals, Past researches and Electronic websites. The author also used strategic sampling technique whereby ample potential feedbacks could be gathered from Seven Tours Companies, Five African Embassies and Twenty Five active Swedish Tourists in Stockholm. On the basis of the analysis of the data which was collected during the interview and surveys, the study revealed that majority of Swedish tourists have little demand on Ethiopian Tourism supply(offers) due to the following reasons; 1. Swedish tourists are dominantly more fascinated by Adventure, Safari and Beach types of trips than cultural and Historical Tours. These interests have leaded them to look for few African countries which have rich sources of Adventure, safari and Beach trips. 2. Even though there are few Swedish visitors who are interested in culture and history, they need to get at least one combination from Safari, Beach or Adventure trips. But unlike the rest of others four African Tourist destination countries stated on the above paragraph, the Swedish tourists believe that these combinations are not available in Ethiopian Tourism offers as they thought that Ethiopia is only known by its cultural and Historical Tourism offers. 3. Tour and travel companies, who are running the major Swedish tourists flow to Africa, have very little information and practical experiences on Ethiopian tourism supply. Due to these reasons the information that they knew about Ethiopia and its tourism sites is not coincide with the Ethiopian Tourism potential in reality. 4. Moreover the poor marketing operation of Ethiopian Tourism Authority and its delegates in advertizing and clarifying the above irregularities which are raised by both the tourists and the tour and travel companies. These and others attributed for the failure of Ethiopian tourism Authority to welcome as many Swedish tourists as possible.

▼ In this study, we apply "the equilibrium price" to investigate the efficiency and the elasticity of Taiwan securities trading
market. The "the equilibrium price" of each transaction are used to represent the true price of the security. The intra-daily tick-by-tick data of the Taiwan security
market is used to obtain the equilibrium prices. Empirical transaction of the two companies Uni-President Enterprises Corporation and Formosa Plastics Corporation are studied. Time-series models of the equilibrium price and the transaction price are established. The time lengths returning to the equilibrium status are also studied, called the efficiency time. Based on the results, we discuss the efficiency of the two stocks. In order to understand the impact of the efficiency time, linear regression models of the efficiency time are built. Furthermore, the variance ratios of the two stocks are also investigated to study their
market efficiency. Finally, the elasticity of
demand and the elasticity of supply are studied and their Markov chain models are established. The results show that the two companies stay more time in the inelastic states.

Per capita consumption of fish in Brazil is relatively small as compared to other animal proteins. On the supply side, this phenomenon can be explained by several factors such as: low national fish production, the distance between fish supply regions and the main consumptions centers etc. This study analyses the influence of prices and population income on the demand of fish in Brazil. First, the problem of fish supply in Brazil is characterized. It is followed by reviews of the relevant economic theory and the methods of the function and the elasticity calculations for a functional form known by Almost Ideal Demand System - AIDS. A descriptive analysis of fish demand in Brazil using the microdata called the Familiar Budget Research - POF 2002-2003 is presented. Finally, demand functions and their elasticities are calculated for two different cases: one considering 5 groups of animal proteins and other with 7 groups of food categories. These functions are estimated for Brazil as a whole and two macro-regions: Northnortheast and Center-South. The main results are: per capita consumption of fish is low in Brazil because few households consume fish. The pattern of fish consumption…

▼ Due to strong demand for air travel before the COVID-19 pandemic, major airports were constrained in capacity and this issue was expected to worsen in the coming decades. Novel aircraft (concepts) could help to alleviate these capacity constraints. However, the market competitiveness and impact of novel aircraft is often challenging to assess, especially in the preliminary design phase. This research aims to construct an aircraft market demand model which uses basic aircraft design parameters and expected future air travel demand as input for a fleet allocation problem with flexible passenger allocation. In this competitive environment, novel aircraft designs compete with existing aircraft for market share in both the current and future aviation landscapes. The novel PrandtlPlane developed by the ParsifalProject, designed with the purpose of alleviating capacity-constrained airports, serves as a case study. Results show that the PrandtlPlane offers strong competition to in-service narrowbody and widebody aircraft with further opportunities for a long-range version.

▼ Despite that sports lottery gambling has become a prevalent economic and recreational activity, it remains an under-researched area in sports management literature. Based on Conlisk’s (1993) theory on the utility of gambling, an econometric model of
demand for sports lottery gambling was constructed and examined in this study. The model assumes an experiential utility associated with sports lottery gambling, and proposes that rational consumers are mainly motivated by three clusters of variables: product attributes, consumer demographics, and marketing variables. The model is empirically examined by using a set of draw-to-draw sales data (from 2001 to August 2012) of the Shengfu game, the most representative sports lottery in China. Through time-series and panel data analyses, this study has the following major findings: (a) sports lottery has consumption value for players, for which ticket composition has considerable impact on the
demand. Draws composed of popular leagues and tournaments are often associated with higher
demand; whereas, draws composed of smaller leagues often sell less; (b) consumers are sensitive to the implicit cost of a buying lottery ticket (i.e., effective price), where the estimated effective price elasticity is around -1; (c) at least in the context of Chinese sports betting
market, the province with higher income level had higher
demand for sports lottery, contradicting the regressivity property of traditional lottery games. The estimated income elasticity is around 0.4; (d) consistent the research findings of previous studies, population segments with higher financial and social burdens tends to buy more lottery tickets; (e) marketing variables and structural arrangements of the game were found have significant impact on consumer
demand of sports lottery tickets; (f) consumers showed signs of learning from betting experience and increasing the odds of winning as evidenced by an ever increasing median probability of winning the first and second prizes; and (g) population, education level, sport development, and venue accessibility were found not significantly related to the
demand of sports lottery. ( en )

▼ Domestic airline alliances have caught attention of Federal aviation regulators for many years. In 1998, U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) published a report on domestic code-sharing alliances. In the report, GAO expressed concerns about the potential anticompetitive practices existing in the proposed three alliances. Although the formation of alliances would have significant impacts on the U.S. airline industry, domestic airline alliances draw little attention from airline literature. This dissertation aims to find out more about this particular aviation business arrangement. This dissertation contains three manuscripts. The first manuscript examines
demand elasticities for different air travel products by using a double-log
demand equation. I utilize an instrumental variables (IV) approach to address the endogeneity problem. I also discuss a modified methodology in finding instruments for the endogenous prices in the airline industry. The results suggest that the price elasticities of the pure online, virtual code-sharing, and non-alliance interline products are elastic. The group of the pure online and virtual code-sharing products has higher product substitutability. This finding implies that more substitutes are present within the group of pure online and virtual code-sharing products. The second manuscript estimates the oligopoly power and
market structure of United-US Airways virtual code-share markets. I develop a structural equilibrium model and employ three-stage least-squares (3SLS) estimation approach to obtain the results. The results suggest that the
market structure for those code-share markets lies somewhere between a non-cooperative oligopoly and cartel structures. In addition, I find evidence that substantial oligopoly power exists in those markets. The results also shed light that those markets experience a decreasing trend in the
demand in those markets. This implies that the negative impact of the global financial crisis in the fall of 2008 is on the
demand of air travel products. The third manuscript studies the entry patterns of virtual code-sharing alliances. Specially, I examine the entry patterns of United-US Airways virtual code-sharing alliance. I use a probit model to estimate the reduced-form equation for the entry decisions of virtual code-sharing alliances. The empirical results suggest that Southwest Airlines is not the direct competitor to virtual code-sharing alliances.

The present dissertation has sought to identify through literature rummage, interviews with experts and market research, attributes of pork loin considered "important" for the “Gaúcho” consumer. Market research has been conducted through survey via the Internet and has obtained answers of 392 consumers, of which 50.8% were male and 49.2% female, predominantly aged between 21-30 years (49.2 %). The results received indicate that “Gaúcho” consumers wish a juicier pork loin, with less fibrousness in smaller portions at points of sale and greater diversity of preparation. It has also identified the importance of breeding animals using practices in which are included animal welfare, being necessary actions to improve the product’s image in terms of trust and food safety. In the next stage, by interviewing experts and with the aid of a modified matrix of Design Chain Demand (DCD), from Canever (2007), it has been identified the critical procedural points that deserve more attention in the supply chain studied, in order to propose improvements to the attributes identified above. In summary, the results indicate as critical procedural points in the integrated pork loin supply chain the following sectors and actions: i) production sector: management of growing animals/finishing and genetic selection, ii) animals transportation: operational care and vehicle adequacy, iii) processing sector: packaging and humanitarian…

▼ This study is an empirical analysis of the international
market for raw jute and jute manufactures. The object of the study is to build and estimate an annual simultaneous equation model of the world jute
market for the post-Second World War years. The chief purpose of the model is to determine the most important dynamic aspects of this
market and, in particular, the causes of the high variability of the world jute prices. The supply side of the model involves the specification and estimation of dynamic equations relating to the annual production of both raw jute and jute manufactures. In the case of raw jute production, equations are estimated for three major producing nations and for the "Rest-of-the-World"; in the case of jute manufactures, there are equations for six major producing nations as well as for a "Rest-of-the-World" sector. In general, jute farmers and the producers of jute manufactures are found to be responsive to economic incentives. The
demand side of the model is constructed by specifying and estimating equations explaining the annual net consumption
demand of jute manufactures for Bangladesh and India. In the case of other five countries/regions, first, the total current consumption
demand for jute manufactures and synthetic substitutes are estimated together and, then, the relative shares of the two are determined. In contrast to the fairly uniform results obtained for the jute production equations, the effects of change in one of the explanatory variables on jute consumption are found to vary widely for the countries studied. Equations explaining end-of-the-year stocks of both raw jute and jute manufactures in the major producing countries have been specified and estimated. Finally, the price equations, explaining the formation of world prices of raw jute and jute manufactures and their relationship with the domestic prices in the major producing countries, have been estimated to complete the empirical model. The final model contains thirty-nine stochastic equations and twenty-five identities, and is decomposed into two blocks: a recursive block, which is estimated by ordinary least squares, and a simultaneous block, which is estimated by two-stage least squares. The study then proceeds to examine the qualitative characteristics of the model by conducting simulation experiments over part of the period of estimation. The model is further tested to explore some interesting hypothetical forms of international jute agreements. Moreover, simulations over future periods are also investigated in order to obtain conditional forecasts and to explore further some of the hypothetical international agreements. In general during the sample period, the basic simulation traces quite satisfactorily, on both the aggregate and the disaggregate level, the trajectories of the important endogenous variable in the model. The simulations over the 1974-1990 period imply practically a stagnation of the position with relatively small increases in world production, consumption, and…

▼ The common theme running through my dissertation work is differentiated products in oligopoly markets with emphasis on the demand analysis. In the markets, consumers generally present heterogeneous preferences even for the same product, which brings additional dimension of differentiation for the market and add more complexity for the equilibrium. The purpose of this dissertation is to qualify and quantify consumers' purchase behavior in relevant markets, and to further investigate the effects on firms' pricing strategy, the market structure, and the effectiveness of policy regulations.
The second chapter studies consumers' heterogeneous demands for two transportation fuels, E10 and E85, and evaluates the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program that promotes the consumption of E85. The RFS sets mandate volumes for the consumption of biofuels. Because E85 contains more ethanol than E10, the Renewable Fuel Standard Program conveys a subsidy to E85, relative to E10. A central question for RFS policy concerns the pass-through of the induced subsidy to consumers. To investigate the issue, we develop a structural model suitable to study the pass-through rate at retail level. We consider two dimension of heterogeneity: consumers' randomly distributed locations, which make fuel products provided by different gas stations horizontally differentiated; and their heterogeneous propensities for the two different fuel products, which are vertically differentiated. Accordingly, we build the model from the "Hotelling" framework and extend it to also include the vertical dimension of heterogeneity. The model provides a natural way to represent the role of imperfect competition at the retail level. We then calibrate the model parameters using real world data and simulate the Nash Equilibrium results of the model. Our results show that the pass-through rate is about 0.7 at the baseline level of model parameters. More market power, higher subsidy level, and consumers' higher preferences for subsidized product are related to lower pass-through rate.
The third chapter empirically models heterogeneity in the seed demand and also focuses on a crucial issue in farmers' purchase behavior—brand inertia. Brand inertia has long been a topic of interest in the Economics and Marketing literature, and it refers to the situation that an individual is more likely to choose the brand he/she has purchased previously. Among the potential explanations for this tendency, researchers have been particularly interested in the importance of state dependence, defined as the causal dependency of an individual's future choices on their current state. In this chapter, we develop and estimate a micro-level random coefficient logit model—the random coefficient is to capture unobserved heterogeneity over farmers and state dependence is modeled by incorporating the previous purchased brand. Our results show that on average, farmers are willing to pay an additional $5.31/unit for a brand if it was purchased in the previous period, equivalent to about 12% of the average…

pagrindinius veiksnius, lemiančius broilerienos pirkimo
apsisprendimą vyrų ir moterų tarpe; 4. Reklamos įtaka broilerienos
pirkimui; 5. Išsiaiškinti kliento požiūrį į importuotą ir Lietuvoje
pagamintą broilerieną. Rezultatai: 1. Tyrimu nustatyta, kad didieji
prekybos centrai nėra populiaresni už gamintojo parduotuves
(P=0,07). Mažmeninės prekybos vietos nėra populiarios, lyginant su
didžiaisias prekybos centrais ir gamintojo parduotuvėmis
(P<0,001). 2. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad renkantis paukštyno
produkciją, vyrai linkę nekreipti dėmesio, kurio paukštyno

▼ Kalakutienos mėsa ir jos produktai yra nuo
seno žinomi kaip sveikatai naudingomis savybėmis pasižymintis
maistas. Kalakutiena turi daugybę privalumų. Ji – turtinga
vitaminais, mažiau alergizuojanti, lengviau virškinama ir ne tokia
riebi mėsa, kaip kitos mėsos rūšys. Nepaisant to, jos paklausa
Be to, Lietuvoje vyrauja rinkos
ekonomika, todėl visi ekonominiai dėsniai nagrinėjami tik rinkos
ekonomikos, bet ne planinės ekonomikos sąlygomis. Kalakutienos
paskirstyti. Taip pat bus neatsižvelgiama į pardavimų grandinės
tarpininkų uždarbį, rėmimo išlaidas ir pan. Tiriami tik labiausiai
su paklausa susiję veiksniai. Paklausa yra... [toliau žr. visą

Turkey meat is known as one of the
healthiest. It has a lot of vitamins, is good for allergic people
and easily digested. Despite all that, it is not very popular in
Lithuania comparing to other species of meat. The demand is quite
low, so it needs some deeper researches about its causes and
consuming characteristics. In the survey of turkey product demand,
it is important to analyze two main aspects. The first one is the
demand-supply features and the second – the opinion and behavior of
the consumers. Furthermore, the products of turkey are goods, so
only the demand and supply features of goods are analyzed in this
work without paying attention to the theories of services. The main
tasks of this work are: 1. To describe the theoretical concept of
product demand and its determinants, focusing on consumer opinion
and behavior; 2. To discuss the characteristics of turkey meat; 3.
To overview the market of turkey and chicken meat, as competing
products, in Lithuania; 4. To investigate the demand for turkey
products in Lithuania The work consists of four main parts. The
first part deals with theoretical aspects of the demand for turkey
meat, ranging from the concept of demand, its species and
determinants. A lot of attention is paid not only to the demand,
but to the supply and their interaction as well, because in a free
market economy they are inseparable from each other. In the second
part the brief history of turkey in Lithuania and its properties
are presented. The third... [to full text]

▼ South African cement manufacturers are under financial pressure. Sales have declined due to
the 2008 recession and electricity costs have tripled from 2005 to 2012. Electricity cost
savings are therefore more important than ever. Unfortunately retrofitting highly energyefficient
equipment is not ideal. These installations are costly and take a long time to
implement. Alternative strategies that can produce quick results in reducing electricity costs
are needed. One such alternative is a programme called Demand Market Participation
(DMP).
The DMP programme was implemented by Eskom, South Africa’s national electricity utility,
to reduce electricity demand during supply shortages. This programme offers potential cost
savings for clients with excess production capacity. Clients such as cement plants can switch
off non-essential production equipment in Eskom’s peak demand periods for a financial
incentive. To maximise the benefits for both the clients and Eskom, accurate electricity
forecasting is needed, as are systems enabling a quick response to load reduction requests.
In this study DMP opportunities on typical cement plants were identified. A DMP strategy to
assist cement plants was developed to achieve maximum cost savings without influencing
production, quality and safety. An existing energy management system (EnMS) was adapted
to incorporate the new DMP participation strategy. The new EnMS and DMP strategy were
implemented at a South African cement plant, resulting in savings of R220 000 per month.
This translates into an annual cost-saving potential of R2-million for the plant, and an R13-
million cost-saving potential for the total South African cement industry.

▼ Background: In technology based industries, firms which originate from advanced economies have traditionally occupied the leading position. In order to keep that position, they relied on strong efforts devoted to research and development, striving for being at the cutting edge of technology. During the last decade, we observed that some change happened amongst the top ranking of firms within the telecommunication industry with the apparition of Huawei, which originates from China, an emerging economy, in second position. Aim: This research is aimed to investigate the influence of firm’s human resource and market demand on firm’s innovation strategy. Definitions: Human resource represents the employees working for a company. In our study, when we mention human resource we deal with employees working in research and development. Market demand refers to the products which are demanded on a specific market. For our research we divided it in three categories: less advanced, advanced and most advanced products. Innovation strategy deals with the way a firm organizes its research and development in order to innovate according to either, in our research, new-tofirm or new-to-world innovation strategy. Completion and results: This study revealed that Huawei managed to adjust its innovation strategy in accordance with its human resources and market demand. Thanks to an efficient and adapted innovation strategy, Huawei now manages to perform better than its main competitor Ericsson, not only on developing or emerging markets, but also in advanced markets. We also observed the role of rules and regulations and cooperation, without which Huawei would not have been able to lead an efficient new-to-firm strategy. We created a model which is designed to give a better understanding of the situation and illustrate the interrelation between human resource, market demand, innovation strategy and performance.
Subjects/Keywords: Human resource; market demand; innovation strategy; telecommunication industry; huawei; ericsson.

▼ Innovativeness is considered to be an important factor for firm’s survival and their ability to compete in today’s market. Therefore, researchers have become more interested in studying innovativeness and its drivers. Studies have also showed that there’s a positive relationship between environmental uncertainty and innovativeness. Organisations are responsive to turbulent environments through innovativeness in order to stay competitive and improve performance. The purpose of this thesis is to rank critical environmental factor’s effect on organisational innovativeness of small and medium enterprises in Sweden, through investigating the impact of market/demand turbulence and technological turbulence on innovativeness. Additionally, we want to examine the relationship between innovativeness and business performance, as well as the indirect relationship between environmental uncertainty and performance. Based on previous literature, we have developed hypotheses and proposed a research model to study the formulated problems. Data for the study were collected from 50 SMEs in Sweden, through a survey with well-known scales and were analysed using regression analysis. The results of the study, reveal that environmental uncertainty has a positive effect on the innovativeness of SMEs. In addition, technological turbulence showed to have a positive significant effect on an SME’s innovativeness; however, contrary to general belief, market/demand turbulence did not have any prominent effect. Our findings also proved that innovativeness have a strong positive impact on business performance, and that only technological turbulence have an indirect influence on performance through innovativeness. This study aimed to contribute to the management a better understanding, of which conditions of environmental turbulences SMEs should adapt to, in order to increase their level of innovativeness. Keywords: environmental uncertainty, organizational innovativeness, performance, market/demand turbulence, technological turbulence, SMEs.
Subjects/Keywords: environmental uncertainty; organizational innovativeness; performance; market/demand turbulence; technological turbulence; SMEs.

▼ Recent developments in the demand response (DR) arena (PowerMatcher platform, Google’s NEST device, FAN communication standard, ENDAX platform etc.) indicate that the world is not becoming simpler. A complex set of interactions and mixtures at different levels of demand response aggregation can be expected in the near future. Given the goal of "liberalization where possible", such a context is bound to lead towards a market where independent market parties capture different parts of the aggregation value chain. Sooner or later, it will become difficult to make sense of the emerging complexity. Therefore, to capture the economics and market model interactions for independent demand response aggregators in Europe, the following research question was developed and explored in this thesis: "Under what market conditions can a viable business model be developed for an independent demand response aggregator in the European power markets?". In the quest of answering this question, three aggregator roles (an In-home Aggregator (IHA), a Community-level Aggregator (CLA), and a Central Aggregator (CA)) are identified and proposed in this document. Then, to map the interactions between these new roles and existing market participants, the electricity market of The Netherlands was considered as a reference herein. Subsequently, through deliberations with different stakeholders (Suppliers/Balance Responsible Parties (BRPs), Distribution System Operator (DSO), Transmission System Operator (TSO), Industrial lobby group (Eurelectric), A French Aggregator, Researchers, and other commercial 3rd parties), a three-layered market model is developed and proposed. Furthermore, the generic business model of a small end-user demand response aggregator is presented along with the assessment of its business case in the day-ahead and intra-day markets of The Netherlands. System Dynamics is used as the modelling tool for this purpose. It is found that there is a potential of generating approximately 2 Billion Euro revenues in one year if all the Electric Vehicles (7500) and Solar PVs (27000) in The Netherlands provide their generation/consumption as flexibility in the market. If the number of Solar PVs in the country increases to 500000, then an aggregator can create more than 9.5 Billion Euros in revenue. As the number of Solar PVs increase beyond a threshold [which is in between 500000 and 700000], an aggregator’s revenue starts dropping. But, a similar rise in the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) does not have the same impact. This is because EV-based flexibility is less when compared to the flexibility from Solar PV generation. Lastly, it is found that an aggregator cannot generate enough revenues if only household equipment-based flexibility is used as demand response. As an answer to the main research question, eight market conditions and seven policy recommendations are also presented.

▼ The production of renewable energy is steadily going up, and as a result of the (almost) zero-marginal cost renewables, the marginal cost based electricity prices go down. While the need for backup generation increases due to the fluctuating availability of renewable energy, the generation units that supply electricity during demand peaks see their income per year drop. This trend could continue to a point where they are mothballed or shut down. As a result, different forms of capacity mechanisms are implemented all over the world, to prevent an increasing amount of blackouts. A capacity subscription market is a capacity mechanism in which consumers make monthly payments, related to the peak demand they want to consume during hours of shortage. Compared to other capacity remuneration mechanisms, this market has the advantage that consumers can choose and pay for their own security of supply. However, a capacity subscription market has not been implemented, and there has been limited scientific research into it. This study aims to give insight into the impact of implementation of a capacity subscription market. By means of an hourly dispatch model, plant profitability of all electricity generation plants in the Netherlands was estimated. Eight scenarios were used to determine the impact of capacity subscription, variating on the amount of renewable energy production as a result of the weather and the availability of interconnection. The impact of capacity subscription on reliability is positive, meaning there are less hours in a year where the amount of electricity supply is insufficient, and the total amount of unserved energy is lower. The results show that the price for capacity subscription would be around 5-30 €/kW/year. The price per year is dependent on the under- or overinvestment at that time. Because consumers can determine their own security of supply, the risk of underinvestment, black-outs, and thus peak prices is dependent on the risk taking behavior of consumers. While the total long term effect on affordability is unclear, the market is expected to become more efficient, as more demand response decreases the need for back-up generation. The implementation would reward consumer flexibility of consumption and could improve local congestion management. Therefore, a capacity subscription market is considered suitable to accommodate reliability in a 100% renewable market. However, if capacity subscription would be applied just in the Netherlands, the effect could leak away to neighboring countries. If there are shortages in countries with a high interconnection with the Netherlands, this could result in peak prices regardless of a capacity subscription market. It is therefore advised that either this market should be implemented in all coupled European electricity markets or other measures are taken to prevent peak prices caused by neighboring countries. Further research should look into design measures that could prevent this leaking effect.

▼ This thesis studies the effects of lakes’ water quality on recreation
demand across provincial parks of Alberta using a travel cost model. Canada has an extremely large number of lakes with fairly good water conditions. However, poor water quality is found in many Albertan lakes and population growth, agricultural pollution, and climate change may worsen water quality in the future. I employed revealed preference of over 70,000 individuals per year in conjunction with the beach advisories of 73 campsites for the years between 2014 and 2018.
This study measures beach advisories' economic impacts on campers’ behaviour at the participation decision and site choice stages through a sequentially estimated two-stage Nested Logit (NL) model. I estimate a recreation
demand model of combining single and multiple-day trips, calculating travel costs, using Alternative Specific Constants (ASCs) and Time Specific Constants (TSCs) to control for time-variant and unobserved sites characteristics.
The results show that participation and site decisions are formed independently, and campers would prefer to substitute the recreation destination with any other campsites rather than alter with different types of activities or staying at home. Campers were found to be negatively affected by the presence of beach advisory at the site. Our results demonstrate that campers are willing to pay $151 more per trip for removing the beach advisory. I use the model to evaluate the welfare impacts of removing all beach advisories. The result can be useful to evaluate the non-
market benefits of improving lake water quality.

▼ The electric power system is regarded as the largest
and most complex machine ever built, in which supply and
demand
must be balanced on a second‐by‐second basis. Consequently, the
electricity
market has to be carefully designed to prevent a
recurrence of the California electricity crisis. This task is even
more demanding with the popularization of the smart grid. Our work
attempts to address the following question: what smart mechanisms
should a smart grid be equipped with, for a smart
market that can
be utilized but not manipulated by smart people? ❧ Based on a
two‐level
market model, we focus on the control, optimization and
market design of the smart grid, where we incorporate three key
elements: the increasing penetration of renewable generation, the
increasing participation of
demand response, and the fast
development and deployment of energy storage systems. ❧ On the
upper level is the primary
market coordinated by the independent
system operator. We consider the economic dispatch problem, and
develop a game‐theoretic framework to investigate the
market
outcomes with strategic generators under locational marginal
pricing. We then consider a dynamic extension, and investigate how
the use of storage may affect the
market structure and
market
outcomes. We also study a multistage energy procurement problem,
and design incentivizing pricing mechanisms that facilitate
efficient participation of the generators. ❧ On the lower level,
there are two secondary markets. The secondary
market I, when it
exists, involves an aggregator who buys power from a group of
generators and sells it to the primary
market. In particular, we
study how to design
market mechanisms for buying wind power. We
first consider the welfare‐maximizing objective, and propose the
stochastic resource auction paradigm that elicits probability
distributions of wind power generation. We then consider the
revenue‐maximizing objective, and study how to extract the surplus
given the correlation among wind power generation. ❧ The secondary
market II mimics the retail electricity
market. We study the
distributor's problem how to utilize
demand response in an adaptive
manner. In a stochastic setting, the optimal pricing scheme should
evolve according to the up‐to‐date information. We develop a
distributed algorithm to compute the optimal price process that
incentives the agents to choose the socially optimal decisions. ❧
Finally, we study a network resource allocation problem in a
hierarchical setting. Motivated by the results on hierarchical
mechanism design, we discuss the challenges of the integration of
the two‐level markets. This is an open problem and the direction of
our future work.

▼ There have been widespread reports of an impending teacher shortage crisis in the U.S. for more than 30 years. In the U.S., there are claims of a widespread national shortage while research indicates teacher shortages are specific to certain subjects and schools. Part of the reason for the conflicting accounts is how shortage is identified and what information is used to assess it. In this study, I test whether a uniform teacher shortage exists across the state of Arkansas. I hypothesize that, rather than a universal shortage, teacher shortages are more likely to occur in certain regions and subjects. I examine the characteristics of districts with the most favorable teaching supply and those with the greatest teaching need using descriptive and multivariate analysis of data collected from district surveys along with administrative data. In this study, “supply” is defined as the ratio of applications to vacancies and “need” is defined as the ratio of vacancies to full-time equivalent (FTE) certified classroom teachers. This is the third study to use applicants to identify teacher supply, and the first to assess teacher need or shortages in this way. Results indicate teacher supply and need are unequally distributed across the state; there is no uniform teacher shortage statewide. Regarding teacher supply, I find district size, region, and urbanicity appear to drive supply. Teacher supply is most favorable for large districts with student enrollments greater than 3,500, districts in the Northwest, and suburban and city districts. Regarding teacher need, I find urbanicity and region contribute most to need and the need appears greatest for districts in cities, and districts in the Central and Southeast regions. Teacher need does not appear to be significantly influenced by district educational success, teacher salary, or district growth. Looking at the relationship between teacher supply and need, I find three clear relationships. In the Central and Southeast regions, there is lower teacher supply and greater teacher need. In urban districts, there is both greater teacher supply and need. In higher poverty districts, there is significantly less teacher supply and more teacher need.

▼ Multisided digital platforms (MSDPs) are software systems that attract at least two distinct groups of users and generate network effects. They have attracted the attention of scholars and practitioners in recent years, as they have disrupted how firms create and capture value and have blurred their boundaries. Firms implementing MSDPs may make different boundary decisions when configuring the complements of their MSDPs. In some cases, they build complements in-house, while in others, they rely on third-party complementors. Despite efforts to understand the complex phenomenon of MSDPs, there is still confusion about what they are, and little is known about the determinant of their boundaries. This study aimed to provide a clear definition of MSDPs and investigated the factors influencing their boundaries as well as how firms respond to these factors. To answer these questions, first, this thesis synthesised a definition of MSDPs by integrating various streams of literature. Based on this, MSDPs have been defined as an organising logic characterised by a layered modular architecture and satisfying three conditions: (1) multisidedness, (2) modularity and (3) codebase extension. Second, this thesis implemented a qualitative case study of Uber, a ridesharing MSDP that disrupted the taxi industry worldwide, to understand the factors influencing MSDP’s boundaries. An in-depth analysis of Uber’s boundary decisions regarding its payment and maps complements was conducted. This showed that supply side factors identified in the literature, such as the need to reduce transactional hazards and build core competencies, influenced MSDP boundary decisions. In addition, demand side factors that have not been considered by previous research influenced firm boundaries. These demand side factors were complement localisation (adapting to local market conditions), customer heterogeneity realisation (addressing customers’ heterogenous needs and preferences) and supermodular complementarity ignition (increasing user numbers and investment in the MSDP). The findings suggested that an MSDP firm is more likely to rely on third-party complementors to respond to demand side factors, even though this may increase transactions costs. An exception to this is when a third-party complementary asset cannot be customised to meet the requirements of the MSDP. In these cases, an MSDP is more likely to build a complement in-house. These findings have offered new insights into MSDP boundaries by shifting the focus of existing theories of firm boundaries from the supply side to the demand side and from value capture to value creation. These new theoretical findings have complemented existing theories of firm boundaries and enhanced our understanding of MSDP boundaries. Moreover, these findings have important theoretical and practical implications, such as the need for future research to better understand demand side factors and for managers to evaluate the tension between supply side and demand side factors strategically.

▼ From the beginning of the twenty-first century, the electrical power industry has moved from traditional power systems toward smart grids. However, with the increasing amount of renewable energy resources integrated into the grid, there is a significant challenge in power system operation due to the intermittency and variability of the renewables. Therefore, the utilization of flexible and controllable demand-side resources to maintain power system efficiency and stability has become a fundamental goal of smart grid initiatives.
Meanwhile, due to the development of communication and sensing technologies, intelligent demand-side management with automatic controls enables residential loads to participate in demand response programs. Therefore, the aggregate control of residential appliances is anticipated to be feasible technique in the near future, which will bring considerable benefits to both residential consumers and load-serving entities. Hence, this dissertation proposes a comprehensive optimal framework for incentive based residential demand aggregation. The contents of this dissertation include: 1) a hardware design of smart home energy management system, 2) a new model to assess the responsive residential demand to financial incentives, and 3) an online algorithm for scheduling residential appliances.
The proposed framework is expected to generate optimal control strategies over residential appliances enrolled in incentive based DR programs in real time. To residential consumers, this framework will 1) provide easy-to-use smart energy management solution, 2) distribute financial rewards by their quantified contribution in DR events, and 3) maintain residents’ comfort-level expectations based on their energy usage preferences. To LSEs, this framework can 1) aggregate residential demand to enhance system reliability, stability and efficiency, and 2) minimize the total reward costs for executing incentive based DR programs. Since this framework benefits both load serving entities and residents, it can stimulate the potential capability of residential appliances enrolled in incentive based DR programs. Eventually, with the growing number of DR participants, this framework has the potential to be one of the most vital parts in providing effective demand-side ancillary services for the entire power system.

▼ Thesis Ph. D. Michigan State University. Economics 2011.
My dissertation is comprised of three chapters that analyze various aspects of teacher labor supply. The first two chapters use the same primary data set and similar empirical strategies to investigate substitute-teacher labor supply in an intermediate school district in Michigan. The data comes from an automated calling system used to offer jobs to available substitute teachers and is notable in two respects. First, both accepted and rejected offers are observed, which facilitates the estimation a sequential binary-choice model of substitute teachers' job-offer acceptance decisions. Second, the calling system makes offers in a conditionally random order, which generates exogenous variation in offer quality across substitute teachers. This exogenous variation is exploited to identify the causal effects of a variety of job attributes on substitute teachers' labor-supply decisions.Substitute teachers are an important, but often overlooked, source of instruction in U.S. public schools. Chapter 1 investigates substitute teachers' preferences for several non-wage job characteristics and their potential implications for education policy. I find that important determinants of the offer-acceptance decision include the offer's arrival time, commute time, day of week, classroom type, school type, and school quality. Interestingly, conditional on school quality student demographics do not significantly influence substitutes' decisions. Longer and higher paying full-day jobs are preferred to half-day jobs, although conditional on daily pay, job length does not significantly impact daily labor-supply decisions. Preferences for several job characteristics are found to vary with substitutes' regular-teacher certification status. Policy implications of these findings are discussed.Chapter 2 estimates the causal effect of commute time on daily labor supply. The substitute-teacher labor market is an ideal environment in which to answer this question because workers are subject to daily exogenous variation in commute time and are free to adjust labor supply on a daily basis. The main result is an estimated offer-acceptance elasticity (with respect to commute time) of about -0.4, which suggests that commute time plays an important role in labor supply decisions. The effect of commute time on labor supply is significantly larger on mornings when the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, but fuel prices and rain do not significantly alter the effect of commuting. There is no statistically significant difference in the overall aversion to commuting between men and women, however women are particularly averse to commuting the cold weather and are significantly more responsive to fuel prices than men.Chapter 3 investigates the impact of an increase in the stakes of mandatory testing created by the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) on teacher quality in California. NCLB simultaneously created strong incentives for schools to improve student achievement and increased the…

▼ Under the determined impulse of the European Union to limit the environmental impact of energy-related services, the electricity sector will face several challenges in coming years. Integrating renewable energy sources in the distribution networks is certainly one of the most urging issues to be tackled with. The current grid and production structure cannot absorb the high penetration shares anticipated for 2020 without putting at risk the entire system. The innovative concept of smart grid offers promising solutions and interesting implementation possibilities.
The objective of the thesis is to specifically study the technical and economic benefits that the creation of an aggregator on the Swedish island of Gotland would imply.
Comparing Gotland's power system characteristics to the broad variety of solutions offered by demand side management, wind power integration enhancement by demand response appeared particularly suited. A business case, specifically oriented towards the minimisation of transmission losses by adapting the electric heat load of private households to the local wind production was designed. Numerical simulations have been conducted, evaluating the technical and economic outcomes, along with the environmental benets, under the current conditions on Gotland. Sensitivity analyses were also performed to determine the key parameters for a successful implementation. A prospective scenario for 2020, with the addition of electric vehicles, has finally been simulated to estimate the long term profitability of an aggregator on the island.
The simulation results indicate that despite patent technical benefits for the distribution network, the studied service would not be profitable in the current situation on Gotland. This, because the transmission losses through the HVDC-cable concern limited amounts of power that are purchased on a market characterized by relatively cheap prices and low volatility. Besides, the high fixed costs the aggregator has to face to install technical equipment in every household constitutes another barrier to its setting up.

▼ Travel cost is used as an auxiliary variable for the price of non-market goods and services. A major issue with this approach is how to calculate the travel distance accurately and decrease the measurement errors. In this study, we use the
mean and median of the coordinates of fishing sites in the coastal counties along the Southeast Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, to measure the travel distance of alternative fishing sites and compare it to the conventional method using the mid-point of
county-level sites. The willingness-to-pay (WTP) of charter and private/rental boat anglers for one additional catch on a day-trip for Dolphinfish, King Mackerel, and Red Snapper is estimated by nested logit model. Our results indicate that the
conventional method overestimates the WTP of charter boat anglers for Dolphinfish and King Mackerel, and underestimates the WTP of private boat anglers for these species.
