▼ Couples begin their marriages optimistic and excited for the future they are starting together, but within the first few years many marriages go on to struggle. This dissertation project serves to enhance our understanding of how and why marriages change during the newlywed years in a series of four longitudinal studies. The first two studies focus on examining changes in relationship satisfaction in tandem with changes in the independent variables that predict satisfaction. The first study analyzes changes in marital problems over the first four years of marriage and compares these changes with observed changes in marital satisfaction. Results indicate that, on average, marital problems remain stable over the newlywed years, even though satisfaction declines. The second study examines changes in risk across a variety of domains (intrapersonal, interpersonal, and external) to determine whether individuals with different marital trajectories differ more in their initial risk or how their risk changes over time. Results are consistent with an initial differences model, such that robust initial differences do more to explain variance in 4-year marital satisfaction trajectories than do differential changes over time. The final two studies examine the mechanisms underlying changes in satisfaction. The third study examines whether the extent to which couples engage in top-down and bottom-up processing changes over time. Results indicate that couples begin their marriages engaging in more top-down processing (e.g., global perceptions of satisfaction predict changes in specific problems) than bottom-up processing (e.g., specific perceptions of problems predict changes in global satisfaction), but that these effects grow weaker over time. The fourth study examines the reciprocal associations between relationship quality and couples' observed communication (e.g., positivity, negativity, effectiveness). Cross-lagged panel analyses indicate that communication behaviors rarely predict satisfaction over time, either at a within-spouse level or a cross-spouse level, but satisfaction is a more robust predictor of communication. Together, these studies offer a nuanced look at relationship development over the newlywed years, providing us with a better understanding of how and why marriages change to inform theory and practice.

▼ This mixed-methods study is the first of its kind to collect large-scale qualitative and quantitative data from diverse couples. The purpose of the research was to determine what factors (Internal, Relational, or External) most impact relational satisfaction in modern-day couples. Four hundred fifty three participants that represented diverse sexual orientation, age, social economic status, and relational commitments were asked to answer a survey that contained Likert-like scales and open-ended questions to identify what factors most influence their relational satisfaction. The answers were coded and grouped into internal, relational, and external factors. Rich descriptions of the qualitative results are included. The qualitative data were also transposed into numerical representations to identify statistical differences and correlations between groups. The researcher identified a few significant and potentially significant demographic factors that merit further investigation including: gender, sexual orientation, parental status, commitment level, relationship status, and length of relationship. The qualitative factors found to significantly or practically significantly (small but notable effect sizes) impact relational satisfaction include: Infidelity, Religion/Morals, Parenting, Commitment/Hard Work, Communication, Domestic, Compatibility, Work/Time, Emotional Support, Finances, Extended Family, Friends, Stress/Trials, Addictions/Recovery, Social/Community Support, and Health/Aging. A new framework for understanding the key ingredients of relational satisfaction is proposed. These ingredients include: Trust, Safety, Stability/Security, Connection/Support, and the degree to which the couples perceived their expectations were being met in these areas. Application of Attachment Theory helped explain some of the findings. Implications for assessment of relational satisfaction and future research are discussed. Advisors/Committee Members: David L. ▼ In line with the Vulnerability-Stress-Adaptation (VSA) model of marriage, this study examined the role of neuroticism, stressful life events, mutual problem solving and negative relationship attributions on marital quality and adjustment among a sample of newlywed couples in Addis Ababa. A quantitative cross-sectional study design involving a sample of 192 newlywed couples was employed. Data were analysed using correlation and multiple regression analysis methods. The PROCESS module in SPSS and Structural Equation Modeling was also used to test indirect effects and actor and partner effects, respectively. The results showed that for both wives’ and husbands’, neuroticism significantly predicted their own marital satisfaction but only husbands’ neuroticism significantly predicted their partners’ marital satisfaction. Stressful life events did not have a significant actor and partner effect for both wives’ and husbands’. Negative relationship attribution was found to be a significant predictor of actors as well as partners' marital satisfaction for both wives’ and husbands’ while only husbands’ mutual problem solving, not that of wives’, had a significant effect on their own marital satisfaction. Tests of indirect effects also showed that, for both wives’ and husbands’, neuroticism had a significant negative intrapersonal and interpersonal indirect effect on marital satisfaction through the mediation of both mutual problem solving and negative relationship attribution. Wives’ and husbands’ stressful life events had a significant negative intrapersonal and interpersonal indirect effect on marital satisfaction through the mediation of negative relationship attribution. Mutual problem solving only mediated a significant indirect effect of husbands’ stress on marital satisfaction at the intrapersonal level and wives’ stress on marital satisfaction at the interpersonal level. This research contributed to enhancing scientific knowledge that guides the design and implementation of policies, programs, and services to promote newlyweds’ marital quality and adjustment in the Ethiopian context. The research also made a theoretical contribution to the VSA model by indicating that adaptive processes play a varying mediational role for wives’ and husbands’ in the indirect effect of stress on marital satisfaction and by confirming that adaptive processes such as mutual problem solving and negative relationship attribution play a more prominent role in affecting marital quality and satisfaction than the other two components of the model, that is neuroticism and stressful life events. ▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate if and how comparative skill levels within marital leisure activities relate to marital satisfaction, and if gender or activity type affects that relationship, and if Flow theory could help explain a potential correlation of these leisure activity contexts. Specifically, this study examined three different comparative skill differences and similarities of couples engaging in leisure activities in three different types of leisure activities as factors in marital leisure satisfaction and ultimately Satisfaction With Married Life (SWML). Their gender and the skill-gender interactions were also included in the analysis. This study followed up on Johnson et al.'s (2006) recommendation for “œmore consideration . . . to be given to the context of the activities themselves and the motivation behind participation” (p. 20). The sample consisted of 657 participating couples regionally reflecting the population and ethnicity across the United States. The Modified Marital Activity Profile (MMAP) was used to measure marital leisure satisfaction. The Satisfaction with Married Life (SWML) scale was included after the MMAP to obtain the overall satisfaction with married life score. The flow experience was measured using items from the Flow State Scale (FSS). A mixed models analysis of co-variance indicated the most common joint leisure activity of both spouses at a similar skill level, and husband is noticeably better than wife, reported significantly higher SWML scores than when the wife is noticeably better than the husband most often. Also, couples who are satisfied with their leisure participation in worse than spouse activities have significantly high SWML scores. Analysis further showed three of the four significant Flow variables had high SWML scores when experiencing Flow, whereas non-athletic activities appeared to be opposite of the other three Flow variables. These relationships were significant even when accounting for the variance explained by demographic variables of gender, age, years married, marriage history, education obtained, ethnicity, and location. Findings support existing family leisure research. This study, however, goes beyond existing research by indicating which comparative skill levels, by gender, and activity types, are positively correlated to SWML. The findings provide implications to couples who are interested in maintaining a healthy marriage, to those considering marriage, scholars, and professionals.

▼ Due to prolonged life expectancy, married couples spend more time together and rely on each other in times of need. Further, the parent-offspring tie is one of the longest-lasting ties middle-aged parents experience across their life span. The nature of relationships with spouses and offspring has resulted in extended periods of support and affective connections between family members in adulthood. My dissertation consists of three papers that utilize dyadic perspectives from both husbands and wives with regard to their relationship to each other and to their adult offspring in adulthood. Papers one and two used middle-aged couples from the Family Exchange Study, a study of exchanges of support and quality of relationships between parents and adult offspring. Using both spouses’ accounts concerning exchanges of support with offspring and their relationships with offspring, paper one looked at how much parents report imbalance in support for each offspring and then examined whether this imbalance in support contributed to parental feelings of ambivalence towards offspring. The results show that parents felt greater ambivalence when there was a larger imbalance in support for each offspring. In addition, this linkage was moderated by their feelings of stress and rewards in helping offspring. In addition, similar connections were observed between imbalance in support and parental ambivalence towards offspring between husbands and wives. Paper two examined the linkage between parents and children in their report of relationship quality using both variable and typological approach. Analyses were conducted using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM), which takes into account the interdependence of observations between partners. Results show that parents who reported higher satisfaction in parent-child relationships also reported higher marital satisfaction. Conversely, parents who reported lower satisfaction in parent-child relationships reported lower marital satisfaction. This effect did not differ by parental gender. Results from the typological approach revealed somewhat diverse family patterns, families with similar valence and families with dissimilar valence across parent-child and spousal relationships. Different family patterns also had implications for the mental health of couples. Finally, paper three examines how one spouse’s activity restriction resulting from illness is related to one’s own and his or her spouse’s well-being. Using data from a baseline of the psychosocial intervention study of patients with Osteoarthritis (OA) and their spouses, the paper investigated whether activity restriction (AR) is associated with depressive symptoms of both patients with OA and spouses and also whether marital satisfaction moderates such associations. ▼ The development of emotion regulation skills is an imperative task early in development. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a physiological proxy of regulation, is indicative of one’s regulatory capacity and can be predictive of behavior in later life (Graham, Ablow, & Measelle, 2010; Moore, 2010). Children begin regulating their emotions at a physiological level early in infancy. Infants who are able to properly suppress RSA have higher quality social interactions in childhood (Graziano, Keane, & Calkins, 2007). Previous work has suggested that parents play a role in predicting infant RSA (Conradt & Ablow, 2010). For example, parent marital satisfaction is known to impact infants’ physiological regulation, such that infants whose parents are less satisfied with their marriages have a decreased ability to regulate physiologically (Moore et al., 2009; Porter, Wouden-Miller, Silva, & Porter, 2003). Previous research has found that parent personality impacts parenting strategies (Cummings & Davies, 1994; Prinzie, Stams, Deković, Reijntjes, & Belsky, 2009), however work examining how parent personality interacts with marital satisfaction to predict infant RSA is lacking. Moreover, the majority of previous work assessing the parent predictors of infant RSA focused on mothers (e.g., Moore et al., 2009). There are known differences in the way mothers and fathers interact with their infants, as well as differences in the way fathers and mothers respond to marital dissatisfaction (Forbes, Cohn, Allen, & Lewinsohn, 2004; Karney & Bradbury, 1995). The present study focused on examining how marital satisfaction and parent personality predicts infant RSA with mothers and fathers. The current study involved 38 families (6-month old infants, mothers, and fathers). Parents completed questionnaires measuring marital satisfaction and personality. Mother-infant and fatherinfant dyads participated in a baseline and face-to-face play task (Still Face Paradigm; Tronick, Als, Adamson, Wise, & Brazelton, 1978), where infant physiological regulation was assessed. Results involving mothers did not yield significant findings predicting infant physiological regulation. For fathers, results indicated that parent personality and parent marital satisfaction predicted infant physiological regulation. The current study highlights the importance of examining the roles of both mothers and fathers predicting infant physiological regulation. ▼ Though numerous studies in the evolutionary psychology literature have investigated how humans select mates in order to successfully reproduce and raise progeny to reproductive maturity, few have examined if factors involved in mate selection matter in marital satisfaction and individual happiness. Being youthful and attractive are indices of reproductive viability and are traits preferred by men universally while women are most known to prefer a mate of high financial status (Buss, 1989), thus underscoring the importance of a male's ability to offer financial investment to potential mates. In addition, women are more likely to evaluate the parental ability of potential long-term mates (Kruger & Fisher, 2003). If reproduction is the unconscious end goal, positive aspects of child quality should be important to parents because children represent the reproductive success individuals have been able to achieve, though the presence and number of children have documented detrimental effects on marital satisfaction (Twenge, Campbell, & Foster, 2003). The present study sought to analyze how information related to child quality, their happiness, spousal attractiveness, and financial status affect individual happiness and marital satisfaction based on the premise that if individuals have made choices that positively affect reproduction, there ought to be a measurable psychological benefit. While the expected sex differences between husbands and wives were apparent when comparing responses on attractiveness, financial status, and children, finding sex differences in how these variables impacted happiness and marital satisfaction were not as clear. The regression models showed that individual happiness and marital satisfaction can be predicted for both husbands and wives from these variables, though financial status and contributing less of the joint income is more important in the marital satisfaction of wives. The findings are discussed in an evolutionary framework with respect to how future work can benefit from extending the application of evolutionary principles of mating to the entire human lifespan. ▼ This study is a descriptive research study attempted to identify the factors influencing paternal identity in the fathers of neonate. The subjects of this study were a total of 138 fathers of neonate who entered the newborn baby room in an obstetrics and gynecology (often abbreviated to OB/GYN) ward of a university hospital and two OB/GYN clinics in Gyeonggi province. The data were collected from September 5, 2016 to October 20, 2016. As a research tools, the paternal identity was measured using a scale with modified items to be adaptable to the fathers by Kyung-Mi Yang and Sang-Rae Kim (2010) using the maternal identity scale which was developed by translation of by Hyo-Jeong Go (1996) based on the Semantic Differential Scale of Osgood, Suci & Tannenbaum (1957), while the paternal attachment was measured using a scale developed by Ji-Young Kim(1994), the marital satisfaction was measured using a scale modified by Kyu-Lyun Choi (1998) of MSS (Marital Satisfaction Scale) developed by Roach, Feaizer and Bowden (1981). Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 Win program including frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression. The results of this study were as follows. 1. The average score of paternal attachment in the subjects was 111.44±12.32 point, the marital satisfaction was 50.75±6.60 point, and the average score of paternal identity was 58.83±10.89 point. 2. As a result of analysis of the difference in the paternal identity according to the general characteristics of the subjects, it was found that, in case of planned pregnancy (t=3.084, p=.002), when the baby’s birth order is the second or higher (F=-2.346, p=.021), and the subjects whose original fatherhood type had displayed ‘as having more love for the child and expressing the love better’ showed significantly higher level of paternal identity than the subjects whose original fatherhood type had displayed ‘less love and less expressions’(F=4.105, p=.019). 3. As a result of analyzing a correlation between the paternal identity and the paternal attachment, and the marital satisfaction, the paternal identity has significant positive correlation with the paternal attachment and the marital satisfaction. Also, the higher the paternal attachment (r=.405, p<.001) was and the higher the marital satisfaction was (r=.520, p<.001), the higher the paternal identity was. 4. As a result of regression analysis was conducted by using paternal attachment and marital satisfaction as well as monthly income, planned pregnancy, birth order, and original paternity type that had shown statistically significant differences in univariate analysis, the paternal attachment (t=2.379, p=.019) and the marital satisfaction (t=3.790, p<.001) were identify factors influencing paternal identity. ▼ The purpose of this online concurrent mixed methods study was to explore the stressors that parents that are raising a child that has been diagnosed with a Pervasive Developmental Disorder experience and investigate the way these stressors impact both parenting and marital/couple satisfaction. The demographic variables explored in this study included parent level of education, parent age, parent relationship status, siblings, child gender, child age, child diagnosis, and type of professional who gave the child's diagnosis. Parents were first asked to complete qualitative questions that included how parents of a child diagnosed with PDD manage the following: discipline of their child, their parenting needs, their marital/couple satisfaction, and the quality of their marriage/relationship. This investigation assessed the differences between demographic variables and scores of stress as reported by parents on the Parenting Stress Index-Third Edition (PSI-3) and scores of spouses/couples as reported on the Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised (MSI-R). A statistical comparison was also completed on the scores of parents on both the PSI-3 and MSI-R. Significant relationships were found to exist between parenting stress and the following variables: parent level of education, age and gender of parent and child, the type of professional who made the diagnosis, the diagnosis itself, and relationship status. When examining marital/couple satisfaction, significant relationships were found to exist with the following demographic variables: relationship status, parent level of education, and gender of the parent. The findings from this study can be used to benefit parents, teachers, therapists, medical professionals and others who work with children who have been diagnosed with PDD. The most important consideration for professionals working with families that have a child that has been diagnosed with PDD is to recognize and communicate those boundaries that are needed for these families to function successfully both as parents and partners. All professionals working with these parents need to help them identify resources useful for dealing with both the demands of parenting and for maintaining a healthy relationship with their partner. It is important to conduct additional research involving more fathers raising children with PDD. No research seems to exist exploring parent level of education, which was found to have a significant impact in the current study, and parenting stress or marital/couple satisfaction. Research should continue in the area of marital/couple satisfaction and how relationship satisfaction is impacted when raising a child that has been diagnosed with PDD.
