▼ The objective of this study is to examine the relation between
management control
system (MCS) and
management information
system (MIS) in securities investment
trust companies in Taiwan. The outcomes of this study could provide managers a reference base for the design and operation of MCS and MIS. This study classifies the MCSs of four firms into different positions according to the level of interactive
control, and comparing with the level of four MIS characteristics. This study supposes that the level of four MIS characteristics would increase with the level of interactive
control. The results of this study are as following: (1) The level of scope and integration of information would increase with the level of interactive
control. (2) There is no strong correlation between the level of timeliness and aggregation of information and the level of interactive
control. (3) The characteristics of securities investment trust industry have an indirect impact on MIS within the industry which causes the four firms in this study all have a good performance on information timeliness of MIS. (4) Interactive
control systems and diagnostic
control systems can exist in a same organization simultaneously.

▼ A social constructionistic case study to determine in what way a diagnostic control system is being received in banking organizations.
This paper explores how an organization receive a diagnostic control system from a social constructionistic perspective. More specifically the study focuses on the way a diagnostic control system is being received in a banking organization.
The results from the case study in a banking organization suggests that using an individual diagnostic control system is not very effective because it’s also necessary to use other aspects of a management control system. For example, it’s possible that people don’t want to change. In that case, using a diagnostic control system will not be very effective.
Finally, I conclude that in a banking organization are different social constructions with their own significance based on social interaction. This knowledge is important to understand how a diagnostic control system will be received in an organization.
This conclusion matches with the results in an comparable empirical case study from Van Baarle (2009) in another sector (Royal Dutch Marechaussee).

management performance based on organizational climate and
management control system. This research analyzes the corporate organizational climate by organizational climate scale (Litwin & Stringer, 1968); moreover, the type of the corporate
management control system is identified by face-to-face interview and the performance of
management is measured by financial indicators. The result of this research shows that there is a significantly positive correlation between
management control type and the subjective performance of
management, and therefore the type of
management control has significantly influence on the subjective performance of corporate
management. As for the aspect of
management control type, the
management performance using procedure
control and output
control simultaneously would be better than that only using output

▼ Management control systems is a traditional research area where the rules and practices of management are examined on how they direct employee behavior. Currently, changes in the market are seen to affect companies' internal needs to modify their management control systems which different consultancy companies have recognized as well. The meaning of the management control system design and coordination should be studied more in organizations.
This study examines the relationship between management control system design and coordination and how they affect management control system functioning in a manufacturing company. The theoretical part adapts Tessier and Otley's (2012) research of the meaning of the design in the employee perception of the management control system. Management control system elements, the use of controls, and the role and objective of management control have been selected as factors affecting management control system design.
The coordination process of management control systems has been studied less and therefore Ghoshal and Nohria's (1989) theory of coordination mechanisms is used in this thesis. The focus is on the formalization of the management control system and its impact on internal transparency, global transparency, flexibility and repair. This study provides insights in the relationship between management control system design and coordination and brings forward success factors and main challenges in the management control systems formalization.
Practical constructivism was selected as an ontological approach to the study and it was conducted as a qualitative single case study. Semi-structured interview was selected as a data generation method. Research data consists of 12 interview for senior managers and other upper white collar employees in the organization. Analysis was conducted through content analysis which was directed by more abstract descriptive analysis strategy.
The most remarkable findings concluded that the MCS elements design, the objective of control and the use of controls are inter-related subjects in the MCS design, and without common coordination different controls do not work together harmoniously as a package and do not support common goal achievement. Several external and internal prohibiting factors of formalization, such as history, uncertainty and the lack of control mechanisms, were identified and development suggestions were given for the case company. The results gave interesting results for the management control system research and further research directions were presented.

▼ This thesis provides an attempt to explore the notions of fairness and trust building with employees and customers in Islamic banking. The study was designed: (1) to examine the associations between fairness and trust building and branch performance; (2) to understand the role of branch-level
control systems in the relationships between fairness-and-trust and organisational performance; and (3) to understand the rituals and symbols of two Islamic banks with regard to building fairness and trust. This research undertakes a survey and qualitative interviews to examine the questions.
The study highlights a number of findings. Employee trust, customer fairness and customer trust have a main effect on organisational performance. This means building employee trust as well as customer fairness and trust is important in improving performance. The absence of a main effect of employee fairness is to some degree curious, but the interaction of employee fairness with
control systems indicates that aligning this element of fairness with the appropriate
control is significant.
To test the robustness of this finding, residual analysis was undertaken. In residual analysis, a regression line is drawn where employee trust, employee fairness, customer trust and customer fairness are the dependent variables and in turn
control systems the independent. The further a branch score is from this line or benchmark model, the greater the residual. This residual is then regressed against performance as the dependent variable in a separate regression. This thesis finds that the deviations from the benchmark model alignment have significant negative association with performance. This implies that the greater deviation from the alignment between EFT building and
control system use has a detrimental performance implication. Similarly, for customer fairness and customer trust, the results indicate that the positive deviations from the benchmark alignment between CFT building and the intensity of use of
control systems have significant positive association with performance. This thesis concludes that aligning the relationships of both customer and employee (along the dimensions of trust and fairness) with
control systems has important implications on performance.
This study then interviewed branch managers, shariah members and senior executives of the two Islamic banks. Thirteen interviews in one bank and three interviews in the other bank were coupled with archival documents of organizational policies. This study used Simons’
control levers framework to explore how belief systems and boundary systems could operate in Islamic banking. In particular, it has contributed to the framework by examining religious values and principles as sources of both beliefs and boundary systems. Also, by highlighting some of the practices in Islamic banks, such as aqad and doa’, the study helps our understanding on the role of rituals and symbols in bonding customers and employees to a bank.
In particular, religious values and principles, and the…

▼ This study aims to further develop research, from a management approach, by studying how MCS packages change when an organization undergoes an initial public offering. Furthermore, it aims to use Malmi and Brown’s (2008) management control system package in order to categorize and analyze the complexity of organizational change brought on by an initial public offering. This study draws on interviews with top managers in a high technological firm, which has recently been listed on the stock exchange. The results of this study imply that an initial public offering can change the MCS package in a number of different ways. Public companies do not necessarily become short-term, an initial public offering can affect a company’s external focus and measurements without affecting its internal measurements, in order for companies to become suitable for the stock market they formalize policies and appoint an independent board and listed companies can experience changes to their culture.

▼ Titel: ”När det inte går som det är tänkt” – En studie av Sveriges finansiella institut och deras hantering av mål i samband med operativa risker.
Seminariedatum: 31 maj 2011
Kurs: 4FE03E Examensarbete – Civilekonomprogrammet
Författare: Josefine Martinsson och Sofie Schelin Kärras
Nyckelord: Operativ risk, Mål, Management Control System, Risk Management

Most of the research on sustainability and Management Control Systems is based on large businesses even though the majority of all companies in the European Union are small and medium sized businesses. Small businesses can make a big impact on the current climate crisis, but since sustainability can be a complex issue and more advanced management in small business is limited, working towards sustainable development in small business could be a challenge. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to study how small businesses work to be more sustainable using Management Control Systems. For data collection, interviews were conducted in four small businesses who work with sustainability. The study finds that it can be hard for small businesses to work with sustainability due to lack of resources, which makes the use of Management Control Systems more informal and value based.

▼ The consumer goods industry changes quickly, and corporations need to keep up with the speed of change, especially in implementing new strategic directions. According to previous literature, projects and programs are flexible ways of implementing strategies. However, practical management systems, monitoring, and roles and responsibilities are not studied in the consumer goods industry. Fast changing business environment and often complex organizational structures make consumer goods industry an interesting field to study. The flexible ways of working in strategic management are not broadly implemented in the industry, which makes the study relevant.
The case company has evolved from a holding company to an integrated consumer goods company in approximately a decade, which has caused confusion, misalignment of objectives, and lack of information flow about strategy implementation. Corporate strategy implementation has been only top management’s responsibility, and corporate strategy and its implementation process are not visible to lower-level managers and employees. To face external challenges, the case company has organized more cross competence strategic projects, but there is no systematic way of managing them. The biggest problem for the case company is how to manage corporate strategy and its implementation in the new internal environment. Therefore, there is a need to study in the consumer goods context: 1) How can corporate management best lead and monitor implementation of corporate strategy? and 2) How should corporate management lead their strategic projects to deliver strategic changes efficiently?
An empirical study, including interviews inside the case company, a workshop and benchmark interviews, was done to examine strategy implementation and project management in the case company compared to literature frameworks. Based on the literature, results were categorized into issues related to corporate management, strategy implementation, strategic project management and portfolio management. The development plan for the case company was created by analyzing case company-specific problems inside the literature categories and then finding solutions for them based on benchmarks, internal recommendations and literature.
Based on the empirical study and the literature review, the case company should support more flexible and networked ways of working in strategy implementation. That requires defined strategic objectives, cross functional structure, and a new mindset in the organization. To deliver strategic changes efficiently, the case company needs to align targets on every level, give attention to strategic projects, engage more people in strategic planning, monitor strategic projects, manage project portfolios and do change management. Structure and monitoring bring more systematic ways of working and focus attention on managing the strategic projects. Through transparent communication, the case company can get all the employees to work towards common goals. Findings had similarities to previous…

▼ Rising fuel prices and tightening vehicle emission
regulations have led to a large demand for fuel efficient passenger
vehicles. Among several design improvements and technical
solutions, advanced Thermal
Management Systems (TMS) have been
recently developed to more efficiently manage the thermal loads
produced by internal combustion engines and thereby reduce fuel
consumption. Advanced TMS include complex networks of coolant, oil
and transmission fluid lines, heat exchangers, recuperators,
variable speed pumps and fans, as well as active fluid flow
control
devices that allows for a greatly improved freedom to manage the
heat rejection and thermal
management of the engine and
transmission components. This
control authority can be exploited,
for instance, to rapidly warm the powertrain fluids during vehicle
cold-starts, and then maintain them at elevated temperatures.
Increasing the temperatures of the engine oil and transmission
fluid decreases their viscosity, ultimately leading to a reduction
of the engine and transmission frictional losses, and improved fuel
economy. On the other hand, robust and accurate TMS controllers
must be developed in order to take full advantage of the additional
degrees of freedom provided by the available actuators and
system
hardware configuration. To this extent, this work focuses on
developing model-based TMS controls for a prototype light-duty
automotive powertrain during fully warmed-up vehicle operation. The
design of the models and
control algorithms is conducted in
parallel with the development of a prototype TMS, hence realizing a
co-design of the TMS hardware and
control system. In order to
achieve this goal, first-principle models are created to
characterize the thermal dynamics of the TMS components, and
calibrated on specific components' data. The submodels are then
integrated into a complete TMS model predicting the temperature
dynamics of the powertrain fluids in response to commands to the
available
system actuators as well as operating and boundary
conditions. The developed model is then used as a tool for
model-based
system analysis, optimization and
control design.
Specifically, a proof-of-concept
control design is conducted to
verify the feasibility of the TMS in maintaining the temperatures
of the powertrain fluids within the recommended range. In
particular, a model-based optimization is conducted to define the
open-loop actuator positions for various engine operating
conditions that maintain the coolant temperature at the desired
set-points. The open-loop strategy is then combined with a feedback
control loop that combines rule-based and PI controllers to
regulate the actuator position based on coolant temperature
tracking error, compensating for disturbances and modeling
errors. The prototype TMS controller developed in this work is shown
to be effective in reducing the fluctuations in the coolant
temperatures during the FTP driving cycle, compared to a baseline
rule-based controller. Based on the preliminary results obtained,
indications on the design of a…

▼ Current industry trends demonstrate aircraft
electrification will be part of future platforms in order to
achieve higher levels of efficiency in various vehicle level
sub-systems. However electrification requires a substantial change
in aircraft design that is not suitable for re-winged or re-engined
applications as some aircraft manufacturers are opting for today.
Thermal limits arise as engine cores progressively get smaller and
hotter to improve overall engine efficiency[8], while legacy
systems still demand a substantial amount of pneumatic, hydraulic
and electric power extraction. The environmental
control system
(ECS) provides pressurization, ventilation and air conditioning in
commercial aircraft[7], making it the main heat sink for all
aircraft loads with exception of the engine. To mitigate the
architecture thermal limits in an efficient manner, the form in
which the ECS interacts with the engine will have to be enhanced as
to reduce the overall energy consumed and achieve an energy
optimized solution. This study examines a tradeoff analysis of an
electric ECS by use of a fully integrated Numerical Propulsion
Simulation
System (NPSS) model that is capable of studying the
interaction between the ECS and the engine cycle deck. It was found
that a peak solution lays in a hybrid ECS where it utilizes the
correct balance between a traditional pneumatic and a fully
electric
system. This intermediate architecture offers a
substantial improvement in aircraft fuel consumptions due to a
reduced amount of waste heat and customer bleed in exchange for
partial electrification of the air-conditions pack which is a
viable option for re-winged applications.

▼ Advanced automotive engine cooling systems can positively impact the performance, fuel economy, and reliability of internal combustion engines. A smart engine cooling
system typically features multiple real time computer controlled actuators: a three way linear smart valve, a variable speed coolant pump, and electric radiator fan(s). In this dissertation, several innovative comprehensive nonlinear
control and optimization operation strategies for the next generation smart cooling application will be analyzed. First, the optimal
control has been investigated to minimize the electric energy usage of radiator fan matrix. A detailed mathematical model of the radiator fan(s) matrix operation and the forced convection heat transfer process was developed to establish a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. An interior points approach was introduced to solve the energy consumption minimization problem. A series of laboratory tests have been conducted with different fan configurations and rotational shaft speed combinations, with the objective to cool a thermal loaded engine. Both the mathematical approach and the laboratory test results demonstrated the effectiveness of similar
control strategies. Based on the tests data and mathematical analysis, an optimization
control strategy reduced the fan matrix power consumption by up to 67%. Second, a series of experimental laboratory tests were implemented to investigate the contributions of each electro-mechanical device in automotive thermal
management system. The test results established a basis for several key operating conclusions. The smart valve and variable speed pump impacted the engine temperature by adjusting the heat transfer rate between the engine and the radiator through coolant redirection and/or coolant flow rate. On the other hand, the radiator fan(s) operation affects the engine's temperature by modifying the heat rejection rate of the radiator which can influence the entire cooling
system. In addition, the smart valve's operation changes the engine's temperature magnitude the greatest amount followed by the radiator fan(s) and the coolant pump. Furthermore, from a power consumption aspect, the radiator fan(s) consumes the most engine power in comparison to the two other actuators. Third, a Lyapunov based nonlinear
control strategy for the radiator fan matrix was studied to accommodate transient engine temperature tracking at heavy heat load. A reduced order mathematical model established a basis for the closed-loop real time feedback
system. Representative numerical and experimental tests demonstrated that the advanced
control strategy can regulate the engine temperature tracking error within 0.12°C and compensate the unknown heat load. The nonlinear controller provided superior performance in terms of power consumption and temperature tracking as evident by the reduced magnitude when compared to a classical proportional integral with lookup table based controller and a bang bang controller. Fourth, a nonlinear adaptive…

▼ All-electric ship power systems have limited generation capacity and finite rotating inertia compared with large power systems. Moreover, all-electric ship power systems include large portions of nonlinear loads and dynamic loads relative to the total power capacity, which may significantly reduce the stability margin. Pulse loads and other high-energy weapon loads in the
system draw a large amount of power intermittently, which may cause significant frequency and voltage oscillations in the
system. Thus, an effective real-time load
management technique is needed to dynamically balance the load and generation to operate the
system normally.
Multi-agent systems, inspired by biological phenomena, aim to cooperatively achieve
system objectives that are difficult to reach by a single agent or centralized controller. Since power systems include various electrical components with different dynamical systems, conventional homogeneous multi-agent
system cooperative controllers have difficulties solving the real-time load
management problem with heterogeneous agents. In this dissertation, a novel heterogeneous multi-agent
system cooperative
control methodology is presented based on artificial potential functions and reduced-order agent models to cooperatively achieve real-time load
management for all-electric ship power systems. The technique integrates high-order
system dynamics and various kinds of operational constraints into the multi-agent
system, which improves the accuracy of the cooperative controller. The multi-agent
system includes a MVAC multiagent
system and a DC zone multi-agent, which are coordinated by an AC-DC communication agent.
The developed multi-agent
system framework and the notional all-electric ship power
system model were simulated in PSCAD software. Case studies and performance analysis of the MVAC multi-agent
system and the DC zone multi-agent
system were performed. The simulation results indicated that propulsion loads and pulse loads can be successfully coordinated to reduce the impact of pulse loads on the power quality of all-electric ship power systems. Further, the switch status or power set-point of loads in DC zones can be optimally determined to dynamically balance the generation and load while satisfying the operational constraints of the
system and considering load priorities. The method has great potential to be extended to other isolated power systems, such as microgrids.

▼ Driven by population
growth and our insatiable need for energy, there is an
ever increasing trend in worldwide energy consumption and
cost. Therefore, sustainability in the energy sector has
become one of the most important international strategic
issues. One approach to mitigating this trend is to
reduce energy consumption in the built environment, which
contributes significantly to overall world energy demand.
A substantial reduction in consumption of fossil fuels
can be achieved by increasing building energy efficiency,
as well as integrating on-site renewable electrical and
thermal energy generation, and energy storage. Such
solutions are becoming more and more cost effective, and
readily available for straightforward implementation in
both new and existing buildings. This
thesis presents the design, implementation and testing of

for the Team UOW ‘Illawarra Flame’ Solar Decathlon house
and the design, development and implementation of a
Hybrid Model Predictive Control (HMPC) strategy to

▼ With the rapid development of Electric Vehicles (EVs), charging demands increase dramatically. EV chargers become one of the most important parts of the development of EVs. In order to prevent the charging impact on power
system, the relative industry must study in advance and propose the appropriate measures based on it. The centralized energy
management system (EMS), which acquires the charging data to a
control center and then exploits energy
management method to
control the chargers, has been accepted as an effective method in mitigating charging impact on power
system. However, the centralized EMS is difficult to be implemented in widespread chargers. As the grid voltage can reflect the status of the power
system directly, and take into account the user's urgency of charging. The EV with lower SOC should get higher charging priority. However, there is no relationship between grid voltage and SOC. Hence, a fully decentralized-controlled smart EV charger is proposed in this thesis. The smart EV charger uses the parameters measured from the power grid and EV battery pack to adjust the charging power by Fuzzy controller. When the grid voltage is too low, the smart charger can adjust the output power of the charger according to the battery SOC. In order to reduce the charging impact on power grids during peak load.
In order to verify that the smart EV charger proposed in this thesis can mitigate the charging impact on power grids, this thesis designs a platform to simulate and analyze the influence of the power
system during the charging process. This thesis also designs the small specification of EV charger which include rectifier and converter to experiment the fully decentralized-controlled smart EV charger. In order to improve the efficiency at light loads, the two-phase synchronous buck converter which used in this thesis can change its operation mode according to the charging voltage/current.

▼ Continuous Descent Arrival (CDA) is a procedure where aircraft descend, at or near idle thrust, from their cruise altitude to their Final Approach Fix without leveling off. By eliminating inefficient leveling off at low altitude, CDA provides benefits such as fuel savings, flight time savings, and the significant noise reduction near airports, but the usage of CDAs has been limited in low traffic condition due to difficulty in the separation
management. For the successful CDA without degradation of the runway throughput, air traffic controllers should know the performance bound of the CDA trajectory and
control the time of arrival for each aircraft, which is interpreted as Required Time of Arrival (RTA) from the aircraft standpoint.
This thesis proposes a novel trajectory optimization methodology to meet RTA constraint. The CDA trajectory optimization problem in the flight
management system is modeled as a path constrained optimal
control problem of switched dynamical
system. A sequential method that performs mode sequence estimation and parameter optimization, sequentially, is proposed to solve this problem. By analyzing the relaxed optimal solution with simplified dynamics, a computationally efficient algorithm to find the optimal switching structure is proposed and applied for the mode sequence estimation. This thesis also proposes a performance-bound analysis methodology using optimal
control techniques to help controllers make a feasible schedule for CDA operations at a meter fix. The feasible time range analysis for a wide variety of aircraft is performed by using the proposed methodology. Based on the analysis result, a single flight time strategy is proposed for the application of CDA in high traffic conditions. The simulation with real traffic data has been shown that the single flight time strategy, combined with the proposed fixed RTA trajectory optimization, guarantees the conflict free CDA operation.

▼ Large-scale distributed computing systems such as data centers are hosted on heterogeneous and networked servers that execute in a dynamic and uncertain operating environment, caused by factors such as time-varying user workload and various failures. Therefore, achieving stringent quality-of-service goals is a challenging task, requiring a comprehensive approach to performance
control, fault diagnosis, and failure recovery.
This work presents a model-based approach for fault
management, which integrates limited lookahead
control (LLC), diagnosis, and fault-tolerance concepts that: (1) enables systems to adapt to environment variations, (2) maintains the availability and reliability of the
system, (3) facilitates
system recovery from failures. We focused on memory leak errors in this thesis. A characterization function is designed to detect memory leaks. Then, a LLC is applied to enable the computing
system to adapt efficiently to variations in the workload, and to enable the
system recover from memory leaks and maintain functionality.

▼ The increasing use of electrical technologies
within on-board (aircraft, road vehicle, train and ship) power
systems is resulting in complex and highly dynamic networks in
which energy storage devices have an important role to play, for
example to resolve the instantaneous mismatch between load demand
and power availability or to provide the flexibility to optimise
overall performance. In this thesis, a multi-level controller for a
super-capacitor based energy storage
system (ESS) is designed,
simulated, emulated and validated experimentally to show its
effectiveness in smoothing load and managing state-of-charge of the
energy storage
system. This thesis first investigates the low level
control of the dual-interleaved converter, particularly at light
load where seven discontinuous conduction modes (DCMs) appear. A
thorough analysis of these operating modes is given and validated
by simulations and experiments. Based on the analysis, an
inverse-model-based feed-forward current controller is implemented,
offering a low level converter
control interface which serves the
high level supervisory controller within the energy storage
system.Two supervisory
control methods have been proposed in this
thesis, both producing a super-capacitor current reference for the
low level controller. The first supervisory
control not only
manages the energy within the ESS but also shields the primary
power source from rapid load transients , which has been examined
through an emulated ESS in the Intelligent Electrical Power Network
Evaluation Facility (IEPNEF). A more advanced supervisory
controller is then proposed which in addition to the benefits of
the first
control, regulates the rate-of-change in power that is
drawn from the primary power source in the
system. The proposed
second
control method is implemented within a real super-capacitor
energy storage
system in IEPNEF, with both simulation and
experimental results successfully demonstrating and validating its
operation.

▼ Database management systems (DBMSs) are the essential tools to monitor and manage data and transactions in databases. Normally a database receives hundreds of requests, called workloads so dynamic workload management is an important component of an autonomic DBMS solution. Controlling concurrently running queries in DBMSs is one form of workload management which is called execution control and it aims to guarantee desired performance levels for queries with varying priorities. One of the challenges in making such control-decisions is determining how much more processing time the query requires prior to completion. Query progress indicators attempt to estimate the progress of running queries. This offers a means to identify the long-running queries at early stages, potentially before other important workloads are negatively impacted, and thereby, assists in making a better decision to select the appropriate execution control mechanism for handling long-running queries.
Our work illustrates a strategy and defines policies for making decisions based on a simple progress indicator that we implement in PostgreSQL, to select the time and type of execution control action to apply to recover from a declining workload performance in a DBMS. Based on the progress of the long running OLAP queries, they are either throttled or killed at different progress points to maximize system efficiency. We define a utility measure to indicate throughput recovery of the important workloads with respect to the increase in the total workload execution time. Our experiments show that throttling combined with a progress indicator results in faster and better system recovery.

▼ This thesis employs the theoretical fusion of disciplinary knowledge, interlacing an analysis from both functional and interpretive frameworks and applies these paradigms to three concepts—organisational identity, the balanced scorecard performance measurement system, and control. As an applied thesis, this study highlights how particular public sector organisations are using a range of multi-disciplinary forms of knowledge constructed for their needs to achieve practical outcomes. Practical evidence of this study is not bound by a single disciplinary field or the concerns raised by academics about the rigorous application of academic knowledge. The study’s value lies in its ability to explore how current communication and accounting knowledge is being used for practical purposes in organisational life. The main focus of this thesis is on identities in an organisational communication context. In exploring the theoretical and practical challenges, the research questions for this thesis were formulated as:
1. Is it possible to effectively control identities in organisations by the use of an integrated performance measurement system—the balanced scorecard—and if so, how?
2. What is the relationship between identities and an integrated performance measurement system—the balanced scorecard—in the identity construction process?
Identities in the organisational context have been extensively discussed in graphic design, corporate communication and marketing, strategic management, organisational behaviour, and social psychology literatures. Corporate identity is the self-presentation of the personality of an organisation (Van Riel, 1995; Van Riel & Balmer, 1997), and organisational identity is the statement of central characteristics described by members (Albert & Whetten, 2003). In this study, identity management is positioned as a strategically complex task, embracing not only logo and name, but also multiple dimensions, levels and facets of organisational life. Responding to the collaborative efforts of researchers and practitioners in identity conceptualisation and methodological approaches, this dissertation argues that analysis can be achieved through the use of an integrated framework of identity products, patternings and processes (Cornelissen, Haslam, & Balmer, 2007), transforming conceptualisations of corporate identity, organisational identity and identification studies.
Likewise, the performance measurement literature from the accounting field now emphasises the importance of ‘soft’ non-financial measures in gauging performance—potentially allowing the monitoring and regulation of ‘collective’ identities (Cornelissen et al., 2007). The balanced scorecard (BSC) (Kaplan & Norton, 1996a), as the selected integrated performance measurement system, quantifies organisational performance under the four perspectives of finance, customer, internal process, and learning and growth. Broadening the traditional performance measurement boundary, the BSC transforms how organisations perceived themselves (Vaivio,…

The control of organizational performance is an area that has been growing over the years, due to an increase of competitiveness and also to a tighter control over the costs. In this sense, management control tools, gain relevance as they satisfy the requirements of the organizations.
In this study a proposal for the creation of a management control tool is developed, the tableau de bord. This management control tool is particularly suitable for the responsibility centers where the operational side is more salient. The case under study is the Lisbon responsibility center of the Portuguese subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp A.G., international company in the steel area, which includes several business units, including the business unit of elevation. The methodology was qualitative in nature, using de analysis of interviews with managers of departments.
The tool proposal aims to assist managers in decision making, providing timely information on short-term and long-term goals. In the future, it is suggested the implementation of a balanced scorecard at the strategic level to measure the company?s overall performance in Portugal, helping to disclose the company´s strategy and communicate the objectives of the different responsibility centers.

▼ How shall a business adapt its management control systems when learning machines enter the arena? Will the control system continue to focus on humans aspects and continue to consider a learning machine to be an automation tool as any other historically programmed computer? Learning machines introduces productivity capabilities that achieve very high levels of efficiency and quality. A learning machine can sort through large amounts of data and make conclusions difficult by a human mind. However, as learning machines become even more complex systems, they introduce an uncertainty not previously considered by automation tools. The algorithms can make their own associations, and the automation engineer will no longer know exactly how a learning machine produces its outcome. What is the motive for a learning machine’s decision? A learning machine in this context becomes more human-like compared to the older generation of automation computers. This thesis concludes that most contemporary Management Control System principles are relevant when deploying machine learning, but some are not. A Management Control System must in contradiction to a historically programmed computer, consider multiple human-like aspects while controlling a deployed learning machine. These conclusions are based on empirical data from web-articles, TED-talks, literature and questionnaires directed to contemporary companies using machine learning within their organizations.

▼ Purpose of this thesis is to describe internal corporate governance controls that businesses use to control and direct the companies’ operations and how these controls impact companies’ business ethics. Author posed three research questions: What internal corporate governance controls are used at different levels in research companies?; How can we determine whether companies, given their characteristics, have more elaborate internal control systems?; and How do research companies communicate internal corporate governance controls to their involved parties in order to maintain a high level of business ethics?. To answer these questions, authors examined four companies in Vietnam and the Czech Republic with a qualitative approach and used cross case study comparison to collect data, process, analyse, and draw conclusions. The thesis is designed based on the research methods for business student by Saunders (2007, 2010) and case study research design and method by Robert K. Yin (2008) with an aim to access the research companies’ internal corporate governance controls and its impact on companies’ business ethics. Semi-structured interviews have been used in combination with companies’ internal documents and archival records to verify and ensure credibility and reliability of the data. The thesis finds that the existence of internal corporate governance controls (ICGC) has certain impact on business ethics (BE). Analysis reveals that research companies in both countries use several levels of ICGC; however ethical “tone from the top” is the determinant factor that makes ICGC impact positively on BE. Furthermore, ICGC in research companies in both countries are built on law-compliance basis, while taking into consideration corporate governance codes and company influence factors, such as personal traits, organizational traits, and national cultures. Two-way communication of ICGC, core values, and leaders’ commitments will impact BE positively. Therefore, following recommendations are made, based on the thesis empirical findings. Companies can install supporting mechanisms such as nomination committee or remuneration committee in the board, in parallel with existing personnel controls, so that the right personnel, “ethical leaders and managers” can be recruited. Companies are also recommended to consider influence factors thoroughly in building their ICGC as well as set up a two-way communication system to disseminate ICGC, core values, commitments, and BE among staff. Due to the law-compliance oriented attitude in approaching ICGC and BE of companies in both countries, legislators are furthermore encouraged to build in and emphasize BE in their legislative systems to enforce ethical behaviour change process. Authors recommend further research on how business ethics controls could be integrated into ICGC framework and implemented substantially and realistically. A further research about the nature of time lag involved in ICGC and BE approaches by leaders and society would help bring a full picture of the current…

▼ This graduate study was assigned by Unisys Oy Ab. The purpose of this study was to find tools to monitor and manage servers and objects in a hosting environment and to remotely connect to the managed objects. Better solutions for promised services were also researched. Unisys provides a ServerHotel service to other businesses which do not have time or resources to manage their own network, servers or applications. Contracts are based on a Service Level Agreement where service level is agreed upon according to the customer's needs. These needs have created a demand for management tools. Unisys wanted to find the most appropriate tools for its hosting environment to fulfill the agreed service level with reasonable costs. The theory consists of literary research focusing on general agreements used in the Finnish IT business, different types of monitoring and management tools and the common protocols used in
them. The theory focuses mainly on the central elements of the above mentioned topics and on their positive and negative features. The second part of the study focuses on general hosting agreements and what management tools Unisys has selected for hosting and why. It also gives a more detailed account of the hosting environment and its features in more detail. Because of the results of the study Unisys decided to use Servers Alive to monitor network and MS applications’ services. Cacti was chosen to monitor disk spaces, which gives us an idea of future disk growth. For remote connections the Microsoft’s Remote Desktop tool was the most
appropriate when the connection was tunneled through Secure Shell (SSH). Finding proper tools for the intended purposes with cost-conscious financial resources proved challenging. This study showed that if required, it is possible to build a professional hosting environment.
