▼ Introduction: Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that Medical Male Circumcision offers upto 60% efficacy in the prevention of heterosexual HIV transmission. The Luo community of Kenya do not practice traditional male circumcision and have been reporting the highest HIV prevalence rates in Kenya. However, despite the concerted efforts to reach as many eligible males as possible, the response has been below expectation particularly adults. We sought to determine the extent of uptake and the factors associated with low uptake of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision among adult men in Luo Nyanza. Methods: The study was a descriptive, cross sectional study with qualitative and quantitative components targeting men aged 18 years and above. A total 384 respondents were interviewed using structured questionaires and two Focus Group Discussions conducted. Data was organized and presented using quantitative techniques; the Chi square, Z-test and Mann Whitney U-test were used for testing for significance. Results: The study found that only 58% of adult men had undergone cicumcision while the remaing 42% had not. VMMC uptake was found to be highest among single respondents (74.8%) and least among polygamous married respondents (30.0%), p-value <0.001, it was also highest among respondents with 0 – 2 children (56.6%) and least (29.8%) among respondents with more than 5 children, p-value=0.017. The unemployed also had the highest uptake (73.3%) and least among self employed (52.2%), p-value=0.006 Conclusion: Circumcision was still unpopular among adults in Luo Nyanza and a significant proportion of adult men have not opted for circumcision. Age, marital status, number fo children, occupation and income are the key factors influencing the uptake of circumcision. There is a linear decline in circumcision uptake with increase in age. In order to accelerate the uptake of VMMC, intervention that targets the older males needs to factor in the household related factors and the roles and responsibilities of such men at different age groups.

Anthropogenic noise is an evolutionarily recent phenomenon and many animals respond by changing the pitch and timing of their vocalizations to avoid masking. A benefit to modifying a vocal mating signal in the context of noise is increased transmission distance. This same modification may pose a fitness cost if that signal feature is also sexually selected. Bird song is a well-studied sexual signal used in territory defense and mate attraction. Physically difficult to produce components of song are thought to be honest signals of male quality. One such trait is a male's ability to maximize the rate of note production at a given frequency bandwidth; this tradeoff is known as vocal performance. Studies have shown modifications to song in the context of noise, specifically to trill rate and bandwidth. Costs of these modifications may include increased conflict with neighboring males, which could potentially lead to decreased body condition, loss of a territory, or less time spent attracting a female. Few studies have investigated this tradeoff between environmentally induced selection (i.e. natural selection) and social selection (i.e. sexual selection) on song in an urban landscape. Therefore, a gap remains in our knowledge of the consequences on fitness of urban song adaptation for signalers. Using the white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, the objectives of my dissertation research include 1) testing if vocal performance is a salient signal for white-crowned sparrows, 2) testing if receivers are responding specifically to variation in trill rate or bandwidth, and 3) testing the effect of ambient noise level on receiver assessment of vocal performance. Overall, my dissertation research suggests that both anthropogenic and natural soundscapes shape the evolution of song and receiver behavior. Modifications to song structure that increase signal detection come at the cost of decreased signal salience for male competitors. Additionally, anthropogenic noise appears to change how males utilize vocal performance. Therefore, species living in noisy areas may face consequences of decreased fitness over time due to masked honest signals and increased male-male conflict.

▼ It has been found that circumcised men are less than half likely to be infected by HIV as uncircumcised men. However, there are also chances that HIV infection can be transmitted at traditional male circumcision due to sharing a bloodcontaminated surgical knife among initiates.This study aims to establish the aspects of traditional male circumcision and the risk of HIV transmission to boys. It also aims to establish the knowledge of male parents, traditional leaders and traditional circumcisers about HIV transmission at traditional male circumcision rites. Further, it seeks to determine whether HIV sensitization has led to safe practice at traditional male circumcision rites to prevent transmission of HIV infection and to identify factors influencing safety of traditional male circumcision against the HIV virus. The study used qualitative methods to collect data using interviews. Data was collected among the Luvale in Chavuma district in Northwestern Zambia. The data was analyzed manually.The study revealed that the majority of the respondents knew what HIV/AIDS was and the routes of transmission. Some respondents knew HIV could be transmitted at male circumcision. Others could not correlate HIV transmission through MTCT and transmission at circumcision. Some traditional circumcisers could not believe sharing a surgical knife between initiates at circumcision could transmit HIV because they wipe it with a cloth before re-using it. They actively used the traditional method of using one surgical knife on all the initiates pausing risk of HIV transmission among them. There were no trained health workers in most health centres in Chavuma district in North Western province to perform male circumcisions except for Chavuma Mission Hospital and Lukolwe rural health centre that had a classified daily employee (CDE) each. There was no active programme dealing with prevention of HIV transmission at male circumcision in the area.Some parents and traditional leadership were opposed to altering the rite because it would compromise their traditional heritage but appealed that the traditional male circumcisers be trained in safe circumcision in order to prevent HIV infection at such a rite.Among the Luvale, the mukanda serves as the training ground for life skills and it is also a channel for receiving ancestral blessings and power. Manhood to the Luvale men therefore entails enduring hardship in life and building up courage to face challenges in life. Circumcision sets apart a Luvale man from women and uncircumcised men. Circumcision through mukanda is the symbol that marks the end of childhood and sets the beginning of the masculine status. Therefore, attaining manhood through circumcision appears much more important than the possible risk of contracting HIV infection at traditional circumcision. The sharing of a surgical knife carries traditional significance. It creates a bond among the peers for the rest of their lives that they shared blood.

There have been decades of work on the Y chromosome and how it relates to maleness and male reproduction. In light of the increasing decline of human male fertility and dependence on assisted reproduction more knowledge about the causes behind male infertility is needed to find more solutions for affected men. This dissertation details histological investigations aiming to elucidate function of Y chromosome genes in male development and fertility using a mouse model. The testis and the seminiferous tubules within were explored and spermatogenesis was quantitatively assessed. Males lacking Y chromosome and transgenic for either the key Y-derived transgenes (Sry and Eif2s3y) or transgenes of their non Y-derived homologues (Sox9 and Eif2s3x) were shown to produce haploid germ cells that could be used for assisted reproduction technologies (ART) and yield live offspring. Another Y chromosome gene, Zfy2, was identified as a gene allowing for transformation of round spermatids into sperm. While in males with only two Y chromosome genes, Sry and Eif2s3y, spermatogenesis progressed to round spermatid stage, addition of Zfy2 allowed for complete spermatogenesis and formation of sperm capable of generating offspring with ART. Investigations into the testicular abnormalities in mice with limited Y chromosome gene contribution showed relationship between the number of Y genes present and the severity and distribution of cellular abnormalities in the seminiferous epithelium and defects of the testis interstitium. Human spermatogenesis was also histologically investigated utilizing testis biopsies from normal and infertile men, some with Y chromosome azoospermic factor (AZF) deletions, validating mice with Y chromosome deficiencies as a model for human male Y-linked infertility. Gross anatomy investigations into human male urogenital anatomy were also undertaken using a novel dissection method in order to grow the repository of male urogenital teaching tools at the medical school. Both examined specimens had common male genital pathologies (direct inguinal hernia, varicocele) and so also showcase physical abnormalities that can affect male reproductive health.

▼ Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) has been proven to reduce heterosexual HIV transmission to men by approximately 60%. It has been argued that achieving 80% circumcision coverage among males aged 15–49 years within five years and maintaining this coverage rate in subsequent years, could avert 3.4 million new HIV infections within 15 years and generate treatment and care savings of US$16.5 billion. As a result the South African Government plans to circumcise 4.3 million males aged 15 and 49 years by the 2015/2016 financial year. However, in the Western Cape the uptake for circumcision has been poor. While there is not a great deal of knowledge out there about the reasons for the uptake (or lack thereof) of VMMC in the Western Cape, current research focus on Xhosa males predominantly. However, there is limited research on circumcision among the "Coloured" population of the Western Cape. As the "Coloured" population is the largest group in the Western Cape, this gap in research and knowledge is worth noting. The current study aimed to explore the barriers to and enablers of uptake of VMMC among "Coloured" males between the ages of 15 and 49 years in the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality. Methodology: The study adopted a qualitative design; semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven key informants, and two focus group discussions with men who had undergone VMMC and men who had chosen not to volunteer to undergo VMMC. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Results: The key enablers to uptake of VMMC were: the desire for improved hygiene; the reduction in the risk of contracting other STIs; the reduction in the risk of contracting HIV; the role of partners and family members who can encourage males to access services; the perceived improvement in the males' sexual experience and performance; and cultural reasons and religious injunction. On the other hand the key barriers that discouraged "Coloured" participants from accessing the services include: fear, particularly the fear of pain; the experience of the health services and the role of health staff; the six week healing period in which males cannot have sex; the unwillingness to alter the body that they were born with; role of partners and family as discouragers of uptake; the influence of gangsterism on the ability of males to access services offered on a different gang's 'turf'; and, substance abuse. The recommendations in this study focus largely on the need to expand the coverage of VMMC in the Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality and to increase the uptake among "Coloured" males between the ages of 15 and 49 years. . These recommendations essentially involve the need to break down the barriers and to accentuate the enablers. To this end social mobilisation campaigns should not focus solely on HIV prevention but rather on hygiene and improved sexual experience and appearance as well as the cultural and religious aspects. ▼ HIV/AIDS is a major public health problem, not only in Zambia but the world as a whole. Millions of new infections are still being reported especially in the Sub-Saharan Africa. This has resulted in a number of interventions being put in place to halt the spread of the HIV infection. Male circumcision is one of the new interventions that is being considered in the prevention of HIV transmission from infected females to males.The overall aim of this study was to determine the acceptability of male circumcision in HIV prevention among the males aged 18 years and above in Mufulira urban. The specific objectives were: (1)To determine the proportion of uncircumcised respondents willing to undergo male circumcision. (2)To determine the reasons why circumcised respondents got circumcised. (3)To identify socio-cultural factors associated with the uptake of male circumcision. (4)To determine association between knowledge on male circumcision and willingness to undergo male circumcision. A cross sectional study was conducted in Mufulira urban in December, 2009 by the research team. The study comprised face to face interviews of 407 respondents using a structured interview schedule and two FGDs involving males aged 18 to 30 years and those aged 31 years and above respectively. Respondents were drawn from one high density area with a high HIV prevalence (Kantanshi Township). The Township was purposively selected. The households were systematically selected. One randomly selected male aged 18 years or older was interviewed from each selected household using a structured interview schedule. Individuals for the FGDs were purposively selected to ensure that groups were homogeneous.The confidence interval was set at 95%, and a result yielding a P value of 5% or less was considered to be statistically significant. The Chi Square test was used to compare the proportions. A full report of the FGDs was written using participants own words. The main ideas and key statements that were expressed were listed down. Data was coded and responses from the two FGDs were compared and a summary was written in narrative form.The study findings revealed that only 18.7% of the respondents were circumcised. The Study further revealed that 60.7% of the respondents expressed willingness to be circumcised if male circumcision could offer partial protection against acquisition of HIV/AIDS. 69% of the respondents had high knowledge on male circumcision. There was no association between knowledge and willingness to undergo male circumcision.The only significant association was between improvement in genital hygiene and willingness to undergo male circumcision.The results showed that though the level of male circumcision was low in Mufulira Urban, the procedure was perceived positively.

▼ Scientific evidence has clearly shown that male circumcision reduces the risk of HIV infection-by providing partial protection in heterosexual men from contacting HIV by at least 60%.The UNAIDS 2009, reports that one of the key drivers of the HIV epidemic Southern Africa and in particularly in Zambia is the low levels of male circumcision rates among others. The 2007 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey indicated that only 11.4 % of the male youths were circumcised.This study investigated factors underlying uptake of male circumcision as an HIV prevention strategy among the youth in selected Zambian communities. A systematic exploratory study was adopted to undertake this survey. Data was collected using both qualitative and quantitative methods. A total of 360 male youths aged 15-24 were randomly selected for interviews. Data processed and analysis was done using EPI-DATA and Statistical Package for Social Sciences Software (SPSS). Bivarriate analysis was performed to ascertain existence of relationships between variables.Generally, knowledge levels on whether male circumcision can prevent acquisition of HIV are low amongst all respondents. The findings of the survey revealed despite awareness level of male circumcision being universal only 27.8% of the youths reported to have enough information about male circumcision. Less than half of the sample believed male circumcision can prevent infection of HIV in heterosexual men. Youths who preferred to remain uncircumcised were concerned about the pain to be felt during surgical procedure. It has also been noted that campaigns to promote male circumcision have not been effective in persuading most young people to take up male circumcision as they have failed to communicate factual information about the operation. Findings indicate that even though male circumcision has been shown to reduce men’s risk of becoming infected with HIV through heterosexual sex, few Zambian youths are aware of this prevention information. There is need to provide the people, particular young men, with adequate information on the health benefits, and risk-reduction related to male circumcision.

▼ The study aimed at identifying factors affecting vasectomy acceptability among men. It sought to answer the research question: What are the factors that may be associated with vasectomy acceptability among men? This was a cross section study that was conducted in Kabwata Township in Lusaka. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview schedule and a focus group discussion guide. The respondents who were interviewed were selected by a systematic sampling method and those for focus group discussions were purposively selected. A total of 245 respondents were interviewed and the response rate was 100%. In addition, 13 participants took part in the focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS version 16.0. The Chi-square test and Fisher`s test were used to determine associations between the independent variables with the dependent variable. Qualitative data were analysed using content analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of the respondents 180 (73.5%) indicated that vasectomy was not culturally right and that men must not undergo vasectomy. The majority of the respondents felt that family planning was a woman’s responsibility and men should only give support to women by allowing them to go for family planning. Most of the respondents 128 (51.8%) stated that men should not be involved in matters concerning women, and 209 (85.4%) indicated that family providers influenced client’s choice of vasectomy as a method of family planning. The findings revealed that 152 (64%) of the respondents had a negative attitude towards vasectomy as they believed that it was not culturally right in the community. In addition, most of the focus group participants were of the view that if a man undergoes vasectomy the man was no longer able to function as a man because sexual activities would be reduced. The study showed that 80.9% of the respondents did not know where vasectomy services were obtained, and 225 (91.8%) said that vasectomy services were not accessible.

▼ Introduction: Neonatal circumcision is known to have a number of advantages social and health related. The main objective of this study was to assess acceptability of Neonatal male circumcision (NMC) among mothers and to explore the reasons for their decision, negative or positive. It was also to enlist factors associated with the decision. methods and materials: This was a cross sectional descriptive study. The data collection tool was a survey questionnaire. The study was conducted at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) situated in Lusaka and was administered to 559 expectant mothers attending antenatal clinic. Logistic regression models were used to identify factors that were associated with acceptability of Nmc.Results: Of the mothers interviewed, the average age was 28 years (range 15-44 years). Findings showed that Nmc is moderately acceptable among mothers with at least 3 out of the 5 (60.5%) intending to take the neonates for the procedure if it turned out to be a boy. The main reasons for positive Nmc decision were health related and include genital hygiene, protection against diseases such as cancers, STI, and HIV. A number of mothers (19.3%) however had intentions of taking their sons for circumcision later on in life, citing pain and the infant being too young for postponing the procedure. Those with negative intentions for Nmc cited pain, and fear of complications as their main reasons against the procedure. Factors associated with decision for Nmc identified in the study include circumcision status of the child’s father, father’s consent, and knowledge and awareness of perceived risks. Religious and cultural beliefs was not identified an associated factor in this study. Knowledge and awareness of benefits of Nmc in general was not identified as an associated factor to decision for Nmc. However a relationship was noted between knowledge and awareness of hygiene as an advantage of Nmc and intention for Nmc. Knowledge and awareness about the benefits of Nmc was however observed to be an important starting point in decision for Nmc though high knowledge was not necessarily associated with positive intentions for Nmc. A relationship however was noted between information provided by health workers and decision for or against Nmc. Results also reveal that there are some mothers who prefer Nmc to be done in a traditional set up (12.3%).Conclusions and Recommendations: It has been seen in this study that acceptability for Nmc among mothers is moderately high, and that they are willing to take their children for Male Circumcision mainly for health reasons. Awareness of Nmc services and knowledge about Nmc is generally high, however a knowledge gap on the risks of Nmc and on the specific benefits of conducting circumcision in the neonatal period has been noted. It is recommended that Information dissemination be more comprehensive and balanced. Also more Mc advocacy interventions need to be targeted not only at mothers but also at fathers since they are critical in the final decision for or against Nmc.…

▼ Background: In Zambia, male circumcision is known to be practised in some parts of the country for traditional, health, and other reasons. Due to scientific evidence that has shown that male circumcision provides protection from HIV transmission to men, the government embarked on a male circumcision scale up program. The study aimed to investigate Women’s Knowledge and Attitude towards Male Circumcision and its influencing factors between 2011 and 2013. Method: The study was a longitudinal study and sampled a total of 1350 women aged 15-29 between years. The study analysed three rounds of data collection. The type of analysis involved univariate, bivariate and multivariate. Ordered logistic regression or proportional odds model (POM) was fitted to predict women’s knowledge and attitude towards male circumcision. Results: The mean age was 21.8 years. The majority were married (48.9%) and followed by single (45.2%). Only less than a quarter (20.2%) of the total married women had circumcised partners. Close to three-quarters (72.5%) of the respondents were aware of male circumcision. The majority (38%) had poor knowledge at baseline. However, in Round two (44%) and Round three (49%), the majority of women had average knowledge of male circumcision. The increase in knowledge in each successive study round was statistically significant at 95% CI, (P<0.001). The study reveals that women’s knowledge was influenced by factors such as; a woman’s age, a woman’s education level, ethnicity, region, marital status, hearing of male circumcision, talking to a spouse, boyfriend or sex partner and lastly talking to a family member on male circumcision. With regards to attitude, the majority (60%) of women at baseline had neutral attitude towards male circumcision. However, the majority in Round two (54%) and Round three (67%) had a positive attitude towards male circumcision. The change in women’s attitude towards male circumcision was statistically significant with p-value <0.001. that women’s attitude towards male circumcision can be explained by factors such as; a woman’s age, her religion, seeing promotional materials on male circumcision, talking to a circumcised person, a boyfriend, sexual partner or a spouse. Discussion and Conclusion: It is evident from the findings that male circumcision campaigns may have failed to correctly educate women on the level of protection MC offers to both men and women. Women had misconceptions on the extent to which MC offers protection. This has implications on risk compensation as women may engage in risky sexual behaviour as they not only believe MC is fully protective of HIV but it also offers protection to women. The exhibited misconceptions may have other implications on women such as gender based violence and reduced negotiating power for safer sex. Nevertheless, women had a positive attitude indicating a favourable environment for scale up of MC.

Infertility is the inability of a sexually active, non-contraception couple to achieve pregnancy in one year. Generally, infertility is classified as either primary (67-71%) when no pregnancy has ever occurred or secondary (29-33%) where there has been a pregnancy, regardless of the outcome. It affects 13-18% of couples of reproductive age worldwide and is treatable in many cases [1]. Although, infertility is not life threatening, it is psychologically a traumatic condition associated with social stigma in certain societies resulting in intense social and parental pressure to attain biological parenthood; hence many infertile couples choose to undergo assisted reproductive technology as a form of treatment. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that up to 50% of infertility cases are associated with male factor because of spermatogenic failure; interestingly in which ~70% of the underlying etiological cause(s) are known but remaining 30% are referred to as idiopathic infertility [2] Thus, the etiology of male infertility is complex and can be reflected in a variety of conditions like defective spermatogenesis, congenital absence of bilateral vas deferens (CABVD), infections, and immunological disorders such as antisperm-antibodies, diabetes, obesity, pituitary disorders, and imbalance in levels of gonadotrophic hormones. Genetic factors are considered to be significant in male infertility [3]. Hence, the aim of the study is to investigate the chromosomal aberrations, azoospermia factor (AZF), cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene mutations in the peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of infertile men with abnormal sperm parameter and compare it with healthy fertile control subjects to delineate the genetic causes of male infertility. This thesis comprises of six chapters. The first chapter summarizes about male factor infertility: incidence, classification, etiology, genetic factors, and treatment options. ▼ Prior research has focused on studying female fertility, but male fertility remains overlooked. Using data from the 2001 Demographic Yearbook, the 1964 to 2002 Taiwan-Fukien Demographic Yearbooks, the 2004 National Statistics Reports and the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) Cycle 6, this dissertation examines male and female fertility at the aggregate and individual levels by studying men’s and women’s fertility differentials in rates and in determinants. Based on examining the age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs) and the total fertility rates (TFRs) for men and women during the 1990 to 1998 period in 43 countries and places, results show that male and female age-specific fertility mainly differs in the older age groups. In those age groups, male fertility largely outnumbers female fertility. And this pattern is especially apparent in low fertility countries (TFR<2,200). With regard to total fertility, male and female TFRs tend to be similar in countries with TFR values lower than 2,200 where female fertility tends to be higher than male fertility. The opposite pattern is true for countries with male and female TFRs higher than 2,200. In the analysis of Taiwan fertility, results reveal that male and female TFRs for most years during 1975 to 2004 are far from identical. The ASFRs for men and women also differed over time and varied by educational attainment. Although fertility determinants at the aggregate level impact men’s and women’s fertility similarly, models combining these factors are more powerful when explaining female than male fertility. The individual level analyses of the U.S. samples also show significant fertility differentials by gender. Age, marriage, and Hispanic origin increase men’s fertility to a greater extent compared to women’s fertility. Family income increases men’s fertility but decreases women’s fertility. Participating in the labor force shows a much stronger positive effect on male than on female childbearing. Cohabitation experience, however, has a significantly stronger impact increasing women’s than men’s fertility. And an increased number of sexual partners is more likely to reduce men’s children compared to women. These findings reported draw research attention to male fertility and contribute to understanding the dynamics of male fertility. ▼ This research focused on the journey of male Māori through secondary school and the effect on their identities in terms of sport, culture and academia. The two key areas of focus were how the culture of the school, including cultural stereotypes, impacts on male Māori learner self-concept, and whether the effect of creating an all Māori boys form class has resulted in an increased sense of belonging and engagement. The research was conducted as a case study underpinned by an interpretive methodology, using a focus group interview. The group was made up of five boys, chosen from a newly formed all boys’ Year 11 Māori form class. The boys were selected in conjunction with their form teacher and the schools Kaitiaki, in order to reflect a range of sporting, academic and cultural levels. The research findings found that although the boys view of their experiences in school seemed positive overall, they described common incidences and reactions to racial discrimination. The exposure to embedded racial stereotypes and behaviours caused them to create their own solutions, often through threatening violence or aggressive reactions. It appears that when young male Māori are more closely connected to Māori culture, they are more likely they are to create these responses. Teachers remain integral to the engagement and belonging of a young male Māori in secondary school. In support of the findings from Kia Eke Panuku (2013), this study found that male Māori require positive relationships with their teachers to engage in the subject and school in a general sense. Relationships based on ako and manaakitanga are key to these students viewing their experiences in school as successful. Another finding showed the importance of sport and physical activity to young male Māori, though success in this area has been a limiting factor in contributing to overall success in secondary school. The placing of male Māori as a ‘physical being’ (Hokowhitu, 2003a; Hokowhitu, 2003b; Hokowhitu, 2004) creates spaces where Māori can be successful, such as practical based subjects like physical education. This success is perceived as acceptable yet often isolates them away from success in other areas (Erueti & Palmer, 2014), feeding into the stereotype itself. The success of the all boys’ Māori form class was scrutinised by this study, and found the intended outcomes had not necessarily been met. The overall impact was that the boys had been grouped with a Māori form teacher and the intentions of additional support had been overlooked due to time pressures and deficit thinking in terms of capabilities of the class members. For the Māori boys in this study, the challenges of overcome historical cultural stereotypes added to the challenge of succeeding at secondary school. The expectation that they walk successfully between the realms of Māori and pākehā to achieve in the current education system coupled with the feeling they needed to act ‘pākehā’ in order to achieve is particularly disturbing. ▼ This is a report of the study that was conducted at The University of Zambia (UNZA) main campus to explore the perceptions of male students towards male circumcision (MC) and its effectiveness as a complimentary method of HIV/AIDS prevention. It was an exploratory study that used both qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection and analysis. The population of the study was students at UNZA main campus. Data was collected using semistructured questionnaires and through focus group discussions (FGD). Forty-two respondents answered the semi-structured questionnaires and 40 participants were involved in the FGDs. A tape recorder was used during the FGDs. The recordings were later transcribed for data analysis and interpretation. The age range of the study participants was 18 to 38 years, with a median age of 23 years. The study shows that perception towards male circumcision is influenced by a number of factors including cultural and social upbringing, friends and the media. The media seemed to have greater influence on the perception (48%); because it was said to put forward facts about MC. The media in this case included television, radio, brochures, posters and workshop handouts. Cultural influence was minimal (18%). Moreover, 71% of the participants said their cultures did not have any preconceived beliefs about MC. Most of these also said their families would not react negatively if they decided to get circumcised, even if they were from non-circumcising cultures.There was no particular non-circumcising tribe that was more against MC than other tribes. The case was similar with age, school, programme, year of study and areas where participants were brought up. Most students said they did not think that people who were circumcised were stigmatized. However, analysis of the findings revealed that there was some level of stigmatization because of the negative perceptions that some people seemed to have about MC as stated by the participants. The general perception that came out about MC was that it is an “ok practice” although slightly over half of the study participants (57%) felt that it could not be used as an effective method of HIV/AIDS prevention. They felt that evidence available so far in favour of its effectiveness was not enough to convince them. However, about half (51%) of the study participants nevertheless felt that it should still be promoted and left for men to make their own decisions whether to adopt it or not. They also said that more research should be conducted, here in Zambia also and more evidence be presented to show just how effective it could be. Some participants felt that promoting MC might encourage men to abandon use of condoms, and consequently increase infection rates. ▼ Men’s presence at antenatal care meetings has positive effect on the health of women during pregnancy and delivery (Iluyasu et al., 2010) which in turn will help to further reduce maternal and neonatal deaths. To this effect the Ministry of Health in Zambia has since embarked on a massive sensitization of male involvement In spite of these incentives, the level of male involvement and its influencing factors is unclear, it is for this reason that this thesis attempted to examine the socio-demographic and economic factors influencing male involvement during pregnancy in Zambia. The study also determined the level of male involvement in Zambia. The findings of the study will help to come up with appropriate programmes or build on existing programmes that encourage male involvement during pregnancy to enable yield benefits such as reduced delay in seeking health services. The study will also provide a basis for further research of the problem. The Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) datasets of 2007 and 2013-14 and Stata Version 11.0 were used for the analysis which included; descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analysis using the Binary Logistic regression to produce odds ratios of involvement. The sample included all men who reported that during their partner/wife’s last pregnancy she had an antenatal visit. The findings of this study show that; men who are in the age group 25-34, are from rural areas and Eastern province were significantly more involved, also men who are married, protestant and had one partner were significantly more involved during pregnancy. Also the majority of the men who were involved were from the Bemba ethnic group. Furthermore men who work in the agricultural sector, are poor and have primary education were significantly more involved during pregnancy. The study revealed that there was an increase in male involvement in 2013/2014 (70.7 per cent) from 17.5 per cent from 2007. The findings from the final model have also shown that men from all other provinces are more involved during pregnancy compared to men from Lusaka. Also men from all other ethnic groups are more involved compared to men from the Bemba ethnic group. Men in the middle wealth quintile and those who are rich are also more involved compared to the poor. Furthermore, married men and those formally married are more involved during pregnancy compared to the never married. Region, ethnicity, wealth and marital status had the highest variations in explaining male involvement. It can be concluded that socio-demographic and economic variables namely; age, residence, marital status, region, religion, number of partners, ethnicity, education, employment and wealth are the factors influencing male involvement during pregnancy in Zambia. ▼ Male involvement in antenatal care clinic is defined as the male partners’ active participation in attending antenatal services. Men serve as gatekeepers to women’s access to reproductive health services. Male participation in antenatal care and HIV testing helps to decrease infant HIV infection and increases HIV free survival in children. However, male involvement has been low in Zambia, especially among partners of young pregnant women. The study aim was to determine the perceptions and experiences of young pregnant women on male involvement at antenatal care clinics and to assess their acceptability of male involvement at ANC. The study was conducted in Mwense District of Luapula province. Phenomenological design and purposive sampling were used. Three focus group discussions and thirty in-depth interviews were conducted. Thematic analysis was used. Analysis of data was done manually. Themes were deductively coded from the interview guides, theoretic framework and objectives of the study. Other themes were processed inductively from the data transcriptions. Triangulation involved assessing the data for consistency and potential variations of findings. Generally, young pregnant women perceived male involvement at antenatal care clinics as a good programme. Male involvement was highly acceptable but with low utilization. It was perceived to help couples prepare for delivery, increase love and care, and learn more about HIV. Male involvement was considered helpful for a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery. The participants felt the need for programme continuity. Male-friendly antenatal care services should be developed. The young women’s experiences of male involvement were mixed, ranging from a better and quick service if accompanied, to being scolded and delay in being attended to if they were not accompanied by a partner. Male involvement left young pregnant women with both negative and positive experiences. The negative experiences made them to have bad perceptions while positive experiences helped the young pregnant women appreciate the programme as being to their benefit hence the desire to have it continue. Community-based programs that would promote male involvement and minimise associated stigma need to be initiated. Male targeted programmes that encourage men to attend antenatal care clinics should be considered. Future studies on views of men with young pregnant partners and their perception on male involvement are recommended. This would aid formulation of targeted interventions for the programme.
