▼ Reticence of child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors to disclose abuse is well documented (Alaggia, 2004). One particularly silent group throughout the course of CSA research has been males (Finkelhor, 1983; Hopper, 2010; Watkins & Bentovim, 1992). As a result, much of what is known about males with CSA histories today is limited. Recently, however, researchers qualitatively examined small samples of males with CSA histories to discover processes of recovery salient to males' experiences (Andersen, 2008; Hunter, 2007; Kia-Keating, Grossman, Sorsoli, & Epstein, 2005; Kia-Keating, Sorsoli, & Grossman, 2010). Several themes emerged from these narratives with enough consistency that cross-validation via quantitative investigation in larger samples is indicated in the interest of furthering knowledge in this field of research. Themes included (a) existence of a safe place relationship; (b) rejection of traditional norms of masculinity, adoption of a new notion of masculinity and acceptance of self within that new definition; and (c) reaching out to others in a spirit of altruism. This study sought to investigate the extent to which these variables were evidenced in a sample of college men reporting CSA. Fifty-five college-enrolled males with histories of child sexual abuse were surveyed to determine to what extent these variables impact the development of resilience. The Stressful Life Events Screening Questionnaire – Revised (SLESQ-R) was used to determine presence of CSA experiences. The Resilience Scale (RS) was used to measure the dependent variable. Independent variables were measured using Mattering to Others Questionnaire (MTOQ), Male Role Attitudes Scale (MRAS) and the Hoffman Gender Scale (HGS). Results indicated that mattering and altruism bore no significant relation to the development of resilience. Gender self-acceptance (HGS subscale), however, was found to predict significantly the development of resilience. ▼ Sexual trauma is a serious social and mental health problem that affects more than 25% of women worldwide, with comparable rates in the United States [1,2]. Survivors of sexual trauma frequently suffer from distorted thoughts about the self and the world but less is known about the processes related to autobiographical memories and time. The following project has three primary aims: 1) to identify mental health symptoms, 2) memory-related outcomes, and 3) temporal changes in college-aged women with and without sexual trauma during adolescence and young adulthood. Experiment 1 tested depressive, anxiety and trauma-related symptoms as well as ruminative thoughts in women with sexual trauma versus women with no history of sex-ual trauma. It was hypothesized that women with sexual trauma would report greater numbers of depressive, anxiety and trauma-related symptoms and ruminative thoughts compared to controls. During Experiment 1, women were interviewed for trauma history with the Structured Interview for DSM-5, and then completed self-report questionnaires for depression, anxiety, trauma-related cognitions and rumination. Women with sexual trauma (n=34) reported significantly more depressive, anxious, and trauma-related symp-toms, as well as ruminative thoughts (all p’s < 0.01), when compared to those measures in controls (n=94). Correlations among these measures were highly significant (p < 0.001, n=128). Experiment 2 evaluated the details surrounding an autobiographical memory of the most stressful event of one’s past, as well as temporal and spatial cognition. Participants completed the Autobiographical Memory Questionnaire and the Symmetry Span, Temporal Separation and Spatial Discrimination tasks. Women with sexual trauma (n=34) reported significantly more temporal and spatial details related to the vividness and significance of a past stressful autobiographical memory compared to controls (n=94), p < 0.001. Furthermore, women who reported heightened vividness of the memory reported higher numbers of ruminative and trauma-related thoughts (p < 0.001). Despite these differences in memory recall, no differences in spatial and temporal cogni-tion tasks unrelated to stress were observed (all p’s > 0.05). These data suggest that sexual trauma can increase the vividness of intense stressful life memories, which may contribute to or minimally interact with their heightened rumination and trauma-related thoughts. In Experiment 3 we tested time sensitivity and subjective time estimation in women with sexual trauma and controls with a temporal bisection task. During training, participants make temporal judgments of stimulus durations (ranging from 400ms-1600ms) presented as a red circle on a black computer screen. Participants classified probes as being “short” (closer to 400ms duration) or “long” (closer to 1600ms duration) with a keyboard press. ▼ Despite recent increases in public, media and research concern with the issue of child rape, not much is known about the disclosure of this phenomenon. This study focused on exploring disclosure from the perspective of child rape victims (i.e., elucidating the subjective meaning of disclosure for children, as well as exploring the circumstances, and factors that facilitate or hinder disclosure). The sampling frame included 16 cases of child rape (12 girls and 4 boys) in the age range 5-17 years old, with 12 years being the average age of the children. The process of thematic analysis revealed three broad thematic areas, as well as a number of dominant and sub-themes. The first broad thematic area, Pre-Disclosure, provides insight into the intrapersonal process children undergo in the aftermath of rape; the children's thoughts and anxieties in coming to understand that they have been raped; and the decision-making process they underwent prior to disclosing their rape experience(s). The second thematic area, Disclosure, provides insight into the children's lived experiences of disclosing their rape and of the disclosure process. At this point in the disclosure process, disclosure is not only experienced at the intrapersonal level, but is experienced in relation to others (interpersonal level). Lastly, Post-Disclosure, provides insight into the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and intergroup/ institutional influences in the aftermath of disclosure that play a role in the child's feelings about having disclosed, their evaluation if disclosing was worthwhile, and their decision to engage in subsequent disclosures (i.e., to keep telling). The present study indicated that disclosure can best be conceptualised using the 'Tipping the Balance' model (London Family Court Clinic, 1995). This theoretical model employs a scale as a metaphor for the competing influences on a child who is sexually victimised, and proposes that a fragile balancing act precedes the decision to disclose (London Family Court Clinic, 1995). Such a decision is affected by competing pressures (intrapersonal, interpersonal and intergroup/ institutional), and by what the present study has identified as facilitators and inhibitors. In each child's case, the balance must tip so that the facilitators and perceived benefits outweigh the influence of the many factors which can inhibit disclosure (London Family Court Clinic, 1995). In addition, the decision to use the ecosystemic theory as a conceptual framework for the present research proved to be of heuristic value as it recognises the multiple levels of influence (intrapersonal, interpersonal, inter-group/institutional) that have an effect on the child. ▼ This dissertation examines developments and challenges of prosecuting crimes of sexual violence in international tribunals and takes the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda as a case study. The dissertation addresses the problem of ending impunity for crimes of sexual violence committed during conflict and war. The research methodology used included sampling, data collection, data analysis and finally writing the report. It is qualitative in nature and not quantitative.Following the death of the Rwandan president in April 1994 there was occasioned a mass slaughter of the minority Tutsi that appalled the conscience of the international community. It dawned after the conflict that sexual violence was widespread and systematic and ruthlessly employed to victimise the Tutsi women and girls. In the aftermath of the genocide, recognising that serious violations of humanitarian law were committed in Rwanda, acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Security Council created the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) by way of Resolution 955 of 8 November 1994. The purpose of this measure was to contribute to the process of national reconciliation in Rwanda and to enhance regional peace and stability. The ICTR has been in operation for more than a decade and has made huge contribution in developing sexual violence jurisprudence including being the first international court to hold that sexual violence could be a constituent element of the crime of genocide. Despite this achievement and unquestionable contribution of the ICTR to the growth of sexual violence jurisprudence in International Humanitarian Law, the record indicates a less than 30 per cent of convictions for sexual violence in completed cases, a record which reflects squandered opportunities and is at variance with the magnitude of the sexual violence committed during the genocide. The research came to a conclusion that this uninspiring record is due to inept investigation, half-hearted prosecution of sexual violence cases, and insensitivity on the part of some judges. The research also indicates that international instruments that pertain to sexual violence have been superseded by developments in case law and need to be revised so as to suit contemporary challenges.

▼ Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a societal problem whose origins date back to the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It is found in all levels of society, from the wealthiest to the poorest; and the short-term and long-term impacts it has on the lives of the victims, can be devastating. There are many reasons for the occurrence of child sexual abuse, but in all cases, the ultimate accountability rests on the shoulders of the sexual offender. The nature of child sexual victimisation varies from verbal suggestions to violent physical force. Irrespective of which type the child is being subjected to, as the weaker partner in the pedagogical relationship with the adult, s/he is never able to defend herself/himself. The global phenomenon, and the increase in CSA, has given rise to the research question, namely: How does child sexual abuse impact on the school life experiences and academic performance of learners at school? The purpose of this research study was to provide insight into the following issues: • The nature and identification of the symptoms of child sexual abuse; • The manner in which sexually abused children manifest their experiences of sexual abuse at school; • How sexually abused children cope with their learning tasks; and • Recommendations for educators. The literature relating to CSA was reviewed, with the aim of establishing a solid theoretical foundation for the study. CSA has been looked at holistically, encompassing the accepted definitions, the related concepts, the nature of sexual abuse, the prevalence and incidence of CSA, the possible causes, the short-term and long-term impacts, and the suggestions by adult survivors for use by educators in their efforts to help abused learners. 11 In an attempt to provide acceptable answers to the research problem, a mixed- method research design was implemented. The research study was conducted in two phases: Stage 1 consisted of an exploration of the research problem by means of the following question put to the participants: In your experience as an adult survivor of child sexual abuse how did the abuse impact on your school life experiences, including your academic performance? A total of nineteen participants from the Eastern Cape Province shared their experiences, by means of writing their life story as a narrative. Purposive and availability sampling of adult survivors was undertaken. In order to ensure the trustworthiness and authenticity of the research methodology, Guba’s model of data verification was used. Accepted ethical measures were taken into consideration and adhered to during the research. The analysed data were taken directly from the narratives that the individual participants saved onto flashdrives. Consensus by the researcher and coder was reached regarding the identification of themes, categories and subcategories. ▼ Child sexual abuse (CSA) in boys has been shown to have long lasting and devastating effects on men's lives. Negative health outcomes such as anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, poor social skills, destructive lifestyles, and mistrust towards others are only a few of the reported after-effects. Research of CSA is largely focused on girls and women, leaving a relative shortage on men. This qualitative study attempts to add to the dearth of literature in this field by reporting findings from narrative interviews with men who were sexually abused as children. The aim was to investigate how men reconciled their early experiences of CSA with everyday life and their relationships with others. Seven participants of New Zealand European and one participant of Māori descent participated in a loosely structured conversational interview. The study was guided by narrative theory and social constructionist epistemology using thematic narrative analysis to interpret the data. The findings are discussed within seven overarching themes: Shame, guilt, and lost self-identities illustrates how survivors of CSA can become very isolated due to their internalised feelings of inferiority and self-blame. The participants' inability to share their experiences alienated them from others as much as themselves, which ultimately affected their sense of belonging. CSA instilled feelings of self-loathing and inadequacy as well as it fostered low self-esteem and led to the loss of their self-identity. Anger and hurt - a kind of death/an empty shell highlights the expression of heightened anger resulting from their experiences and isolation. Participants appeared confused, lost and empty without aspirations or hopes for the future. It describes a long process of regaining meaning in life, which some men found in fatherhood despite its challenges. Escaping the pain describes the men's emotional and physical turmoil, which triggered attempts to forget past events. Many participants engaged in violence and substance use, tried to become someone else, or end their life. Damage boils over talks about the participants' memories of their CSA experiences and the associated effects on their daily lives. It demonstrates how CSA can affect men's emotional stability and reactions when situations become too distressing. Mistrust - a place of safety summarises participants' feelings of mistrust towards others and their difficulty to accept forms of authority. It highlights CSA's potential aftermath in regards to interpersonal and romantic relationships as well as over protectiveness towards children. Social norms and barriers to disclosure discusses the difficulties surrounding disclosure of CSA, spanning both childhood and adulthood. Further, it shows how social norms such as hegemonic masculinity can influence outcomes. From missed opportunities to healing describes regrets about perceived undeveloped talents, educational opportunities, or loss of family. There is a great need to recognize the adverse effects childhood sexual abuse can have on individuals and the various factors that may interact with these effects. This study focuses on the effect that sexual abuse can have on self-esteem of adolescents, with regard to gender, parental support and type of perpetrator (i.e. intra- or extrafamilial abusers). The sample in this study consists of Icelandic adolescents who participated in a study called Youth in Iceland 2004, which was conducted in all Icelandic secondary schools. In accordance with the literature the following hypotheses were tested: Those who have been intrafamilially sexually abused will have lower self-esteem than those extrafamilially sexually abused, boys who have been sexually abused will have better self-esteem than girls who have been sexually abused and those who have been sexually abused and have high support from their parents will have a higher self-esteem than those who have been sexually abused and have low support from their parents. The results revealed significant main effects for sexual abuse; those who had not been sexually abused had higher self-esteem than those that were sexually abused. But the difference between intra- and extrafamilial abuse was not significant. There were significant main effects for gender; boys had better self-esteem than girls. There were also significant main effects for support from parents; those who had higher support from their parents had higher self-esteem than those who had low support from their parents. There was not a significant interaction between any of the variables.

▼ This thesis presents an exploration of the possibility of women's past experiences of childhood sexual abuse having the status of belonging in Christian communities. This is the result of the observation that in literature and in practice, these experiences are regarded and treated in a way that distances and alienates them from the core values and practices of these places. The thesis is both critical and constructive in exploring how past experiences of childhood sexual abuse can be understood and articulated in ways that facilitate their exclusion from or their belonging in Christian communities. Prioritising the perspectives of women who have been sexually abused as children, and recognising the vulnerability of these perspectives when placed alongside more dominant views, I situate the study among feminist theologies that allow the topic to be explored in such a way that allocates a place of significance to voices and perspectives that are not heard or respected in other locations. Having outlined the roots of the questions I am asking, I set out the features of my location and approach and discuss my choice and interpretation of sources (chapter one). Following a critique and rejection of the dominant discourse of psychiatry as a vocabulary in which the significance of childhood sexual abuse is commonly understood (chapter two), I allow space for a detailed reading of three autobiographical accounts of experiences of childhood sexual abuse (chapter three). From here I develop two theologically significant ideas emerging from these accounts, to show the possibility of articulating and understanding these experiences in terms that belong in Christian communities (chapter four). I then turn to look at how the issue of childhood sexual abuse has been treated in Christian communities (chapter five), exploring the long silences of churches on this subject, and explaining how this impedes the extent to which women who have been sexually abused might be able to belong in these communities. I argue for the importance of hearing these women's voices alongside those of others so that they can belong in Christian communities alongside those who are more commonly heard. From this perspective of considering how these experiences belong in Christian community, I turn to look at the way that the question of forgiveness is understood and approached in relation to childhood sexual abuse (chapter six). I argue that although speaking of forgiveness is in theory a way of speaking about childhood sexual abuse that connects this experience with a theological concept that is meaningful in Christian communities, unless the specifics of the language of forgiveness are carefully and thoughtfully presented, in fact speaking of forgiveness may result in further alienation rather than belonging. I conclude (chapter seven) by suggesting that currently it is problematic to suppose that the formally structured churches are places in which experiences of childhood sexual abuse could safely belong.
