This thesis revolves around the ability of liquid drops to bounce off superhydrophobic materials. We generate special rebounds and characterize them experimentally. We focus on finding the relevant physical phenomena to describe the temporal and spatial extension of such events, both quantities being of importance from the fundamental and applied point of vue. First, we study the influence of the susbtrate geometry. We modify the surface locally, by introducing a singular macrotexture, and show that it leads to a new bouncing mechanism that shortens the contact time by a factor typically 2. We also modify the substrate at the size of the drop. We perform impacts on non wetting cones and spheres and compare them to what is observed on a flat surface. Then, we study the effect of…

▼ The purpose of this thesis was to assess the repeatability and reproducibility of two high-speed
macrotexture measuring systems. The first portion of the study collected
macrotexture measurements using the two high-speed systems on the Virginia Smart Road facility and validated the reproducibility of the mean profile depth (MPD) measurements with reference CT Meter measurements. The various data sets were then compared with each other. The objective was to determine whether the two systems are collecting repeatable and reproducible data.
The analysis showed that the two high-speed systems investigated have good repeatability (0.105 mm for the Ames and 0.113 mm for the SCRIM) when measuring the average MPD of the sections investigated. The two systems produce measurements that are highly-correlated (Ames R2 = 0.9591 and SCRIM R2 = 0.9157) with the reference ones obtained with the CT Meter. While the Ames systems, with the data processed using the Virginia Tech filter, measures MPD values that are very close to those of the CT Meter, with a virtually zero systematic bias. The SCRIM obtains slightly lower readings. The differences are thought to be due to the filtering of the raw pavement elevation measurements used by the SCRIM processing software to eliminate dropout and spikes in the laser measurements.

▼ This thesis sought to integrate the collection and prediction of a pavement surface property known as
macrotexture for use in the management of pavement networks. This was achieved through two experiments, the first of which modeled the behavior of asphalt concrete with a higher than typical asphalt content when subjected to simulated traffic to determine the effect on pavement
macrotexture. The second experiment compared five high-speed
macrotexture measurement devices on a variety of pavement surface types and under various operating conditions. The change in
macrotexture due to traffic loading showed that as the cumulative traffic increased, the
macrotexture decreased due to the asphalt coming out on the surface, referred to as bleeding. For the comparison of measurement devices data were processed using current industry standards. The results demonstrate good repeatability for each of the devices tested. The analysis also showed that not all high-speed devices can be used interchangeably for all pavement surface types. Vehicle speed was found to be a factor for two of the devices. The effect of speed was found to vary by surface type. Finally, vehicle acceleration was shown to influence the parameters produced by one of the devices, demonstrating that care should be taken to gather high-quality datasets for the critical pavement characteristic of
macrotexture.

A difficulty that affects pavement contractors regarding road safety is to achieve minimum values of surface friction required to the pavement in the field. Minimum values of microtexture tested through the British pendulum and ranges of macrotexture tested by the sand patch test are found in the DNIT Manual of Asphalt Pavements Restoration (2006). In situations where the friction parameters are controlled, oftentimes the pavement needs to be reexecuted when the micro and macrotexture do not meet the required values. This is a problem only observed during the construction phase as friction is not determined indirectly in the laboratory during the design phase. Research indicates that changes in the properties of the aggregates and the particle size can affect the microtexture and macrotexture of the surface course. In order to contribute to the topic of friction, seeking the prediction of this parameter
in the laboratory, this work aimed to develop a methodology capable of evaluating gradations and the effect of the…

▼ Safe roads require pavement surfaces that provide adequate friction to tires, helping to bring vehicles to a complete stop in a timely manner that avoids accidents. The current manual methods of evaluating surface friction of roads and bridges are not only dangerous for the inspectors and motorists on the road but they are also very time-consuming and subject to inspector's judgment. This thesis confirms the possibility of monitoring friction of pavement through pavement macrotexture from acoustic measurements underneath the body of a moving vehicle. Currently, macrotexture is quantified by a Mean Texture Depth (MTD) index. In the present work, MTD is estimated from the sound generated by the tire-pavement interaction in a moving vehicle. To establish this approach, experiments were performed at the National Center for Asphalt Technology in Auburn, Alabama. Signal processing techniques were used to identify a frequency band that led to an accurate correlation between integrated acoustic pressure and MTD. This frequency band depends on the speed of the vehicle and the pavement macrotexture. The effect of microphone locations and the speed of the vehicle on macrotexture monitoring are studied and conclusions are presented. It is observed that raising the microphones by 13 inches decreased correlation by approximately 13%. Microphones that are close and pointing towards contact patch of rear tire have highest correlation to MTD. Also, it is concluded that correlation increases with vehicle speed. Accurate estimates of MTD were obtained for road surfaces having MTD values in the range of 0.5 - 2.5 mm with vehicle speeds in the range of 32 - 80 km/h (20 - 50 mph).

▼ Pavement
macrotexture has been shown to influence a range of safety and comfort issues including wet weather friction, splash and spray, ambient and in-vehicle noise, tire wear, and rolling resistance. While devices and general guidance exist to measure
macrotexture, the wide-scale collection and use of
macrotexture is neither mandated nor is it typically employed in the United States. This work seeks to improve upon the methods used to calibrate, collect, pre-process, and distill
macrotexture data into useful information that can be utilized by pavement managers. This is accomplished by 1. developing a methodology to evaluate and compare candidate data collection devices; 2. plans and procedures to evaluate the accuracy of high-speed network data collection devices with reference surfaces and measurements; 3. the development of a method to remove erroneous data from emerging 3-D
macrotexture sensors; 4. development of a model to describe the change in
macrotexture as a function of traffic; 5.finally, distillation of the final collected pavement surface profiles into parameters for the prediction of important pavement surface properties aforementioned. Various high-speed
macrotexture measurement devices were shown to have good repeatability (between 0.06 to 0.09mm MPD) and interchangeability of single-spot laser dfevices was demonstrated via a limits of agreement analysis. The operational factors of speed and acceleration were shown to affect the resulting MPD of several devices and guidelines are given for vehicle speed and sensor exposure settings. Devices with single spot and line lasers were shown to reproduce reference waveforms on manufactured surfaces within predefined tolerances. A model was developed that predicts future
macrotexture levels (as measured by RMS) for pavements prone to bleeding due to rich asphalt content. Finally, several previously published
macrotexture parameters along with a suite of novel parameters were evaluated for their effectiveness in the prediction of wet weather friction and certain types of road noise. Many of the parameters evaluated outperformed the current metrics of MPD and RMS.

quality control in many manufacturing processes. In particular,
measurement and interpretation of ultrasonic scattering can be very
useful in the development of practical methods for nondestructive
ultrasonic characterization of microtextured regions in titanium
alloys that are widely used for aeroengine components. Ultrasonic
scattering and scattering-induced ultrasonic attenuation are two
measurable ultrasonic characteristics that can be employed for
material microstructures characterization. Most past studies
address ultrasonic attenuation and scattering in polycrystals with
macroscopic isotropy or simple artificial textures and equiaxed
grains of high crystallographic symmetry (cubic or hexagonal).
However, most manmade materials, as a result of thermomechanical
processing, exhibit nonequiaxed grains and complex forms of
macroscopic texture. One objective of this dissertation is to
provide a better understanding of ultrasonic propagation and
scattering in textured polycrystyals. In this dissertation, general
attenuation and scattering models are developed for polycrystals
with arbitrary
macrotexture and ellipsoidal grain shape with
triclinic symmetry. The attenuation coefficients were derived in
the Born approximation by generalizing previous theoretical models
that were suitable for equiaxed grains and uniaxial hexagonal
textures. The general scattering coefficients were obtained from
the integrand of the attenuation coefficients. The second major
objective is to ultrasonically characterize the microtextured
regions (MTRs) in Ti alloys which is a result of orientation
clustering of crystallites and leads to a reduction of dwell
fatigue properties of the material. The models developed are
extended to titanium alloys with those dual-scale microstructures.
The third objective of this dissertation is to establish an
inversion methodology to robustly reconstruct material
characteristics from ultrasonic attenuation and backscattering
measurements. By using a combination of the
attenuation-to-backscattering ratios and directional backscattering
ratios, an inversion procedure is developed for a complete
reconstruction of MTR sizes and its effective elastic parameters.
The experimental methodology and the system calibration method are
described for the near field of the ultrasonic transducer
measurements. Examples of measurements and application of inversion
models to typical titanium alloy samples are given. It is shown
that in general, the MTR sizes and the microtexture parameters
determined by ultrasonic inversion models are in reasonable
agreement with those measured by others on the same samples by
destructive electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)
characterization methods.

The airport infrastructure assumes a prominent role in the case of flight safety, given to the high percentage of accidents in landing and taking-off operations. The airport pavements are responsible for promoting adequate characteristics to ensure the safety of users in such operations.
The general concern about the pavement´s functional characteristics relates to the adhesion between the aircraft tire and the surface of the landing and taking-off runway. The goal is to obtain coatings from asphalt mixtures to ensure the tire-pavement grip, by combining microtextures and macrotextures in order to create friction properties suitable for both aircraft speed variation and climate adversity situations.
The structure of the airport pavement can be either rigid or flexible, due to technical and economic issues. The choice of the kind of pavement is justified according to the type of its use (runways, taxiways, parking areas).
This paper presents a study on the use of plant mixed of porous friction course (PFC), which…

▼ This thesis compared
macrotexture measurements obtained using the volumetric method (Sand Patch) and three laser-based devices: MGPS system, ICC laser profiler, and Circular Texture Meter (CTMeter). The study used data from three sources: two controlled experiments conducted at the Virginia Smart Road, field data collected on eight newly constructed hot-mix-asphalt (HMA) roadway surfaces, and data collected on airport surfaces at the Wallops flight facility, Virginia.
The data collected at the Virginia Smart Road, a controlled-access two-lane road that includes various HMA and concrete surfaces, was used for the main analysis. The other two sets of data were used for verification and validation of the model developed. The analysis of the data collected at the Virginia Smart Road showed that the CTMeter mean profile depth (MPD) has the highest correlation with the volumetric (Sand Patch) mean texture depth (MTD). Furthermore, texture convexity had a significant effect on the correlation between the measurements obtained with different devices.
Two sets of models for converting the laser-based texture measurements to an estimated MTD (ETD) were developed. One set of equations considered all the data collected at the Virginia Smart Road, and the other excluded the measurements on the Open-Graded Friction Course (OGFC). The developed models were tested using measurements collected at eight roadway sections throughout Virginia and the Wallops flight facility. The model, excluding the OGFC section, was successfully applied to other sites.

▼ One of the most important objectives for transportation engineers is to understand pavement surface properties and their positive and negative effects on the user. This can improve the design of the infrastructure, adequacy of tools, and consistency of methodologies that are essential for transportation practitioners regarding
macrotexture characterization. Important pavement surface characteristics, or tire-pavement interactions, such as friction, tire-pavement noise, splash and spray, and rolling resistance, are significantly influenced by pavement
macrotexture.
This dissertation compares static and dynamic
macrotexture measurements and proposes and enhanced method to quantify the
macrotexture. Dynamic measurements performed with vehicle-mounted lasers have the advantage of measuring
macrotexture at traffic speed. One drawback of these laser devices is the presence of 'spikes' in the collected data, which impact the texture measurements. The dissertation proposes two robust and innovative methods to overcome this limitation.
The first method is a data-driven adaptive method that detects and removes the spikes from high-speed laser texture measurements. The method first calculates the discrete wavelet transform of the texture measurements. It then detects (at all levels) and removes the spikes from the obtained wavelet coefficients (or differences). Finally, it calculates the inverse discrete wavelet transform with the processed wavelet coefficients (without outliers) to obtain the Mean Profile Depth (MPD) from the measurements with the spikes removed. The method was validated by comparing the results with MPD measurements obtained with a Circular Texture Meter (CTMeter) that was chosen as the control device.
Although this first method was able to successfully remove the spikes, it has the drawback that it depends on manual modeling of the distribution of the wavelet coefficients to correctly define an appropriate threshold. The next step of this dissertation proposes an enhanced to the spike removal methodology for
macrotexture measurements taken with high-speed laser devices. This denoising methodology uses an algorithm that defines the distribution of texture measurements by using the family of Generalized Gaussian Distributions (GGD), along with the False Discovery Rate (FDR) method that controls the proportion of wrongly identified spikes among all identified spikes. The FDR control allows for an adaptive threshold selection that differentiates between valid measurements and spikes. The validation of the method showed that the MPD results obtained with denoised dynamic measurements are comparable to MPD results from the control devices. This second method is included as a crucial step in the last stage of this dissertation as explained following.
The last part of the dissertation presents an enhanced
macrotexture characterization index based on the Effective Area for Water Evacuation (EAWE), which: (1) Estimates the potential of the pavement to drain water and (2) Correlates better with two pavement…

Over the past 10 years, the fleet of cars rose from 124,840 (2003) to 297,473 cars (2013) and 3,179 buses (2003) to 7,398 buses (2013). This equates to a 138% increase. Moreover, although, according to DENATRAN in 2003, Manaus was 220,816 vehicles. In 2013, Manaus already has 551,455 registered vehicles in its municipal fleet, which equates to an increase of almost 150%. As a result of this growth, the city roads are presented with its ability to flow and dead, visually, with their decks completely deformed. In this sense, we tried to carry this research, a structural evaluation of pavements of the main streets of the town (Av. Constantino Nery, Avenida Djalma Batista, Recife Av, Av and Av Efigênio Sales Paraíba), employing the technique FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) in the diagnosis of the pavement structures of these pathways. The results showed that
the structures of those decks still have the condition to withstand the demands of traffic load applied to them, since their structural quality obtained by the mentioned technique, presented in good condition, according to the floors they presented deflections smaller than the allowed maximum, and radii of curvature much greater than 100 m. In addition, analysis was performed of the safety of the coating with respect to tire-pavement grip, which presented values for microtexture and macrotexture well outside the ranges recommended by the standards.

▼ More than one million people are killed annually around the world as a result of traffic accidents. In Brazil, this epidemic costs the public coffers 56 billion a year. More than half of the fatal accidents in Rio Grande do Sul occur in night or dawn periods, but less than a third of the displacements occur at these times. Considering these affirmatives, road safety devices operating in periods with no sunlight should be effective in order to provide safety to road users. The main devices acting in these periods are road demarcations and retroreflective signs. Therefore, the objective of this research is to follow the retroreflective indices of the road demarcations applied on a section of BR-287, located in the city of Santa Maria - RS. The surface of the pavement is equipped with MRAF. The work consisted in the monitoring of retroreflectivity and surface texture of the stretch during two years. The results showed that these demarcations applied
on this type of surface tend to have lower retroreflectivity values than the others, but with the same degradation rate, 0.01% per day. The retroreflectivity values tend to fall more rapidly in the first days of life, presenting a peak near the 30 days and, after that, fall again smoothly until they present a horizontal asymptote. No influence of the precipitation on the retroreflectivity values was found in this study, since in the study section there was little request of the lines in front of the friction with the vehicle tires. The measurement direction does not interfere in the results of retroreflectivity in places where the paint speed was low. The white demarcations present, on average, 30% higher retroreflectivity values compared to the yellow demarcations. The demarcations showed 50% lower retroreflectivity values when measured with geometry equipment equal to 30m when compared to values measured with 15m geometry. When wet, demarcations lose about 80% of their
retroreflective capacity. The periodic cleaning of the demarcations was beneficial for the retroreflectivity indices. It was evidenced that the macrotexture of the pavement is directly connected with the retroreflectivity of the demarcations, flatter classes have higher retroreflectivity values. The microtexture of the demarcations also had an influence on the retroreflective properties. In addition, the study determined the optimal rate of application of glass microspheres 325g / m² painted, different from what is today in SICRO 250g / m².

▼ This dissertation is compiled of the findings of several phases of a detailed research study
that was aimed at investigating the Skid Resistance phenomenon.
In the first phase of the dissertation research a study was performed to evaluate the
different factors that influence frictional measurements obtained using the Dynamic
Friction Tester (DFT). A temperature calibration factor that would account for
temperature effects on DFT readings and IFI computations was developed. In addition,
other variables that also affect the friction measurements obtained using the DFT are
identified.
In the next phase of the dissertation research the effect of pavement roughness on the
Skid Resistance was investigated. The variation of the normal load and its nonlinear
relation to SN was used to explain lower SN values measured on relatively rougher
surfaces. The feasibility of using the International Roughness Index (IRI) and the
Dynamic Load Coefficient (DLC) as predictors of the reduction in SN due to pavement
roughness was also investigated.
In the final phase of the dissertation research an in-depth investigation was carried out to
better understand the principles underlying the concept of the International Friction Index
(IFI), and specifically the role played by the Speed Constant (
Sp) parameter in the IFI
computations. The parameter
Sp dictates the speed variation of the wet friction
measurements taken on a given pavement surface. The results of the current investigation
suggest the revision of the procedure for computation of the
Sp parameter to incorporate
device specific properties.
Furthermore, the incorporation of vehicle characteristics in the
Sp parameter
computations would help address a well known deficiency of the IFI, which is the
inconsistent
FR60 (predicted friction at 60 km/h) obtained from the friction values
measured at two different slip speeds on the same surface. This study also showed that
the modification of the
Sp parameter reduces significantly the slip speed dependency of
the device calibration parameters
A and B.
Finally, a modified IFI procedure that incorporates device specific slip conditions is
presented. The modified IFI procedure showed consistently better predictive capability
than the conventional ASTM procedure on all the different devices considered in this
study.

▼ Being able to accurately predict the coefficient of
friction between a tire-surface pairing is highly desirable.
Accurate coefficient of friction values would find use in tire
models, highway safety applications, and motorsport competitions.
The work in this thesis seeks to accurately measure road surface
texture at high resolution, and examine the influence of surface
texture on the friction response. Friction measurements were
obtained with skid systems using ASTM standardized tires, and a
British Pendulum Tester. Great effort was taken to keep the tire or
rubber used constant such that the isolated effect of the road
surface texture on the coefficient of friction could be observed.
Friction measurements were collected on seventeen unique road
surface types. Each of these road surface types were then cored
such that two representative samples of road texture could be
measured at high resolution in a laboratory setting. From the
surface texture measurements on each core, eight surface parameters
were identified and computed. These surface parameters were
investigated with respect to friction using single and multivariate
linear regression models. Additionally surface texture stability
was conducted in order to investigate surface measurement
practices. Each surface texture data set was subsampled and
subdivided in order to better understand minimally acceptable scan
size and resolution with respect to surface texture.

The management of a road network encompasses constant assessments of structural conditions and, above all, functional conditions. Thus, a form of automated survey, carried out at traffic speeds, in which human influence can be unconsidered, is under development in Brazilian road engineering, as it is seen internationally. This present work aims to contribute to the process of functional assessment of pavements through the study of applicability of the functional inventory process of rigid pavements with the use of Pavement Scanner equipment. In order to do so, after the literature review of rigid pavement inventory and Pavement Scanner
equipment, test sections were defined and evaluated according to the traditional method of surface survey (ICP - DNIT 062 / PRO, DNIT 060 / PRO), the traditional sand patch volumetric method for the evaluation of macrotexture (ASTM E 965/96), through imaging analysis from the test sections and under the use of Pavement Scanner equipment. With the results, a statistical analysis of these techniques were performed, demonstrating the feasibility of using the equipment and the analysis procedure adopted.

▼ This work evaluates the pavement surface condition and detects the pavement subsurface delamination through vehicle noise collected by microphones mounted underneath a moving vehicle. Such measurements will include tire-generated sound, which carries much information about the road condition, as well as noise generated by the environment and vehicle. A careful frequency analysis of the vehicle noise is carried out to localize the frequency range for surface characteristics and subsurface delamination respectively. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method is applied to differentiate important information about the road condition from noisy data contributions collected while the vehicle is moving. The analysis begins with acoustic pressure measurements made over constant and known road conditions. Fourier transforms are taken over various time windows and a PCA is performed over the resulting vectors, yielding a set of principal component vectors for the road condition. The condition of each road section is characterized by a set of principal component vectors. Pavement macrotexture Mean Texture Depth (MTD) is predicted from the principal component vector and then projected to the overall pavement condition index (PCI) as well as the pavement friction and uniformity evaluation. Pavement subsurface delamination is also detected from the principal component vector. The significant accomplishments of this study are as follows: (1) localize the frequency ranges of vehicle noise related to pavement surface and subsurface features respectively; (2) demonstrate the potential for PCA to reduce noise and illustrate the procedure to apply PCA in frequency domain for noise filtering; (3) find the relationship between MTD, sound pressure and driving speed; (4) optimize the microphone placement for data collection for the MTD prediction; (5) develop a calibration-free method for the MTD prediction with an error of 16%; (6) use the predicted Equivalent MTD found by the PCA Energy Method to explore pavement friction prediction, construction non-segregation evaluation, and the contribution to PCI prediction from the acoustic aspect; (7) differentiate the stiffness of the top layer pavement within 10 cm of surface from tire/road noise, and (8) detect the subsurface delamination from the shift of frequency in peak sound pressure level.

▼ This diploma thesis deals with the relation between the longitudinal friction coefficient dependence on measuring speed and the value of road surface
macrotexture MPD. Results of longitudinal friction coefficient and value of MPD measurement on 73 sections are included in this thesis. The results were compared by regression analysis and its outcome was used for determination of formula that enable calculation of longitudinal friction coefficient for any operating speed when longitudinal friction coefficient for 60 km/h and value of
macrotexture are known. The evaluation scale for skid resistance index (SRI) was also determined in this thesis. It could be used for evaluation of skid resistance independently of the type of device used for friction coefficient measurement.

▼ Superhydrophobic surfaces execute self-cleaning,
anti-icing, and modifying heat transfer in many technological and
industrial applications. In quest of maximizing water repellency,
modification of droplet dynamics and subsequent reduction of
contact time have been achieved by incorporating
macrotexture on
the superhydrophobic surfaces. However, the dynamics of low
temperature water, and other viscous liquid droplets impacting
anti-wetting surfaces with macrotextures is not well explored. In
this thesis, we study the effect of viscosity on the bouncing
dynamics of liquid droplets impacting macrotextured
superamphiphobic surfaces using various glycerol-water mixtures as
model liquids at different impacting conditions. Macrotextured
surface are made by using an anti-wetting spray coating along with
a tinned-copper wire as ridge on the silicon substrate. The
complexity of viscous dissipation along the
macrotexture and on the
superamphiphobic surface is studied experimentally and then a new
model is proposed for understanding when the
macrotexture can
induce maximum repellency of the viscous liquids on the
superamphiphobic surfaces. A universal model for predicting minimum
impact velocity for splitting is developed considering the droplet
viscosity, velocity, volume, and other important parameters along
with the surface characteristics and the
macrotexture size. This
enables engineering of surfaces for repelling droplets of viscous
liquids such as freezing rain or inks during inkjet printing.
Moreover, we studied the potentiality of superhydrophobic highly
porous carbon nanotube (CNT) micropillars coated by the ultrathin,
conformal, and low-surface-energy layer of poly
(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl acrylate) (pPFDA) surfaces in
condensation and freezing conditions (at high humidity). Droplet
impact dynamics, condensate characteristics and freezing time
delays are investigated on the CNT micropillars with various
geometry along with the CNT forest and other commercially available
anti-wetting coatings. Different wetting states (Cassie and Wenzel)
of the coalesced condensate drops are observed on CNT micropillars
with different solid area fractions and heights. In the low
temperature and humid surroundings, CNT micropillars with the
favorable topological configuration demonstrate complete droplet
bouncing, significant freezing delays and considerable durability
during several icing/de-icing cycles. This study provides
understanding on the preferable geometry of the highly porous CNT
micropillars for retaining hydrophobicity and preventing ice
formation in the low temperature environments.

▼ This study investigates and compares mean profile
depth (MPD) measurements from three laser-based
macrotexture
measuring devices, namely a Dynatest laser profiler, a Circular
Texture Meter, and an Ames Laser Texture Scanner, to mean texture
depth (MTD) results from volumetric sand patch tests. In addition,
the effects of speed and material type on the MPD results for the
profiler are researched. The effect of
macrotexture on surface
friction is also investigated using a Dynamic Friction Tester. The
study uses sand patch test data obtained from field testing at
three sites, each with a variety of pavement types, and laboratory
testing on various types of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and Portland
cement concrete samples of varying finish, as well as other common,
manufactured, textured samples. Analysis of the data shows that the
MPD obtained from the Ames Laser Texture Scanner has the highest
correlation to the MTD measurements determined using the sand patch
test. It is also determined that the MPD values taken by the laser
profiler decreased as the speed at which the sample was traveling
increased. A new correlation for predicting MTD from laser profiler
MPD is developed through laboratory testing. Additionally, it is
found that material type had an effect on the laser MPD
values.

▼ The work consists of two parts. The first part is focused on the determination of an anti-skid properties of the test section on Vídenská street. The anti-skid properties will be measured using a pendulum tester and
macrotexture will be set at the same time. Microtexture will be measured using a volumetric patch technique. In the second part we will try to gain an initial experience with design and testing of a low noise stone mastic asphalt. We will set basic characteristics and at the same time compare with a standard stone mastic asphalt. For the comparison two various bituminous binders are used. The water sensitivity, resistance against rutting and stiffness moduli are compared.

This research was based on a Stone Matrix Asphalt SMA in the band 0/8S design made with asphalt binder AC 20, used as a thin wearing course of a test section on the Presidente Dutra Highway, that connects São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. The
occurrence of some distresses in the test section motivated the study of alternative SMA 0/8S mixtures using two conventional asphalt binders: AC 20 and AC 50/60, and two modified by polymer: one with 3.0% of SBS and other with 6.5% of SBS. Laboratory tests were conducted to verify the mix design and to determine their mechanical behavior such as the resistance against rutting, the indirect tensile strength and the resilient modulus. It was observed that the use of SBS polymer modified binders and asphalt binder AC 50/60 causes a significant reduction of rutting. The resilient modulus at 25°C also presents a reduction in the samples with SBS polymer modified binders and AC 50/60 in comparison with AC 20. The indirect tensile strength suffers little variation across the different types of asphalt binders, tested at the same temperature. Field tests related to functional evaluation and skid-resistance of the test section were carried out. The test section was monitored immediately
following the construction and after 2 years and 7 months of continuous use. The results showed that the wearing coarse…
