▼ Magnetic reconnection facilitates the conversion of magnetic energy to thermal energy and plasma flows. Reconnection occurs at the magnetopause, the magnetic boundary between the plasmas of the terrestrial magnetosphere and the heliosphere. Turbulence is known to develop at this boundary, but its influence on reconnection, particularly on small scales, is unknown. In light of this, an important goal of NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Mission is to understand the role turbulence plays in the development of reconnection. We present two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of the 16 October 2015 MMS magnetopause reconnection event. While the two-dimensional simulation is laminar, turbulence develops at both the x-line and along the magnetic separatrices in the three-dimensional simulation. This turbulence is electromagnetic, is characterized by a wavevector k given by kρ_e∼(m_e/m_i)^0.25 with ρ_e the electron Larmor radius, and appears to have the ion pressure gradient as its source of free energy. Taken together, these results suggest the instability is a variant of the lower-hybrid drift instability. The turbulence produces electric field fluctuations in the out-of-plane direction with an amplitude of around ± 10 mV/m, which is much greater than the reconnection electric field of around 0.1 mV/m. Such large values of the out-of-plane electric field have been identified in the MMS data. The turbulence in the simulation controls the scale lengths of the density profile and current layers, driving them closer to √{ρ_eρ_i} than the ρ_e or d_e scalings seen in 2D reconnection simulations, where d_e is the electron inertial length. The turbulence produces both anomalous resistivity and anomalous viscosity. Each contribute significantly to breaking the frozen-in condition in the electron diffusion region. The crescent-shaped features in velocity space seen both in MMS observations and in two-dimensional simulations survive. We compare and contrast these results to a three-dimensional simulation of the 8 December 2015 MMS magnetopause reconnection event in which the reconnecting and out-of-plane guide fields are comparable. LHDI is still present in this event, although its appearance is modified by the presence of the guide field. The crescents also survive although, in agreement with MMS, their intensity decreases. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this work the Method of Manufactured Solutions (MMS) is introduced for the code veri cation of full-wave frequency dependent electromagnetic computational software. At rst the method is sketched in the context of the veri cation and validation process and the need for proper code veri cation is highlighted. Subsequently, the MMS is investigated in its natural context: the Finite Element Method, speci cally for the E- eld Vector Wave Equation. The usefulness of the method to detect error in a computational code is demonstrated. The selection of Manufactured Solutions is discussed and it is demonstrated how it can be used to nd the probable cause of bugs. Mutation testing is introduced and used to show the ability to detect errors present in code. The MMS is nally applied in a novel manner to a Method of Moments (MoM) code. The challenges of numerical integration associated with the application of the operator is discussed and correct integration is successfully demonstrated. Subsequently the MMS is demonstrated to be successfully applied to the MoM and mutation testing is used to demonstrate the practical e cacy of the method. The application of the MMS to the MoM is the main contribution of this work.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Metode van Vervaardigde Oplossings (MVO) word hier bekend gestel vir die veri kasie van numeriese volgolf frekwensie-afhanklike elektromagnetise kode. Die metode word eerstens in die bre e konteks van algemene veri kasie en validasie geplaas en gevolglik word die noodsaaklikheid van kode veri kasie beklemtoon. Daarna, word die toets-metode in die konteks van die Eindige Element Metode vir die E-veld vektorgolf vergelyking bestudeer. Die MVO is oorspronklik ontwikkel in die di erentiaalvergelyking omgewing. Die bruikbaarheid van die metode vir elektromagnetiese simulasies word prakties gedemonstreer deur die opsporing van werklike foute. Die metode word ook verder ondersoek vir die oorsprong van foute. Mutasietoetsing word bekendgestel en word gebruik om die metode verder prakties te veri eer. Die MVO word laastens in 'n nuwe manier gebruik om 'n Moment Metode kode te veri eer. Die praktiese probleme betrokke by numeriese integrasie word ondersoek en die korrekte toepassing van die integraal operator word prakties gedemonstreer. Daarna, word die MVO in hierdie konteks gedemonstreer deur verskeie voorbeelde te ondersoek. Mutasietoetsing word weereens gebruik om na die e ektiewiteit van die MVO te kyk om 'n Moment Metode kode te toets. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to simplify the exchange (in both directions) of multimedia content between mobile phones and network attached web servers. The solution proposed in this report specifically concerns displaying Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages via a web browser connected to a network-attached web server and graphically authoring MMS messages via a web interface. This thesis project is important because it brings multimedia content, in the form of MMS messages, from isolation in the telecommunication world closer to wide availability via the Internet. This transition is very important as the Internet is where media is shared with the world today. This approach brings added value to end users who want to share content generated using their phone on a web site. It also provides added value to operators who want to increase the amount of MMS traffic in their networks. The solution is non-trivial because there are a number of complexities at both ends. This is because the MMS messages that are authored at mobile phones differ between both handset models and manufacturers. Moreover, the format used for MMS (MMS SMIL) is not widely used on the Internet, thus a transformation to an Internet browser supported format must be performed. The thesis examines to what extent this transformation can be completely automatic and how MMS messages can be authored through a web interface. The results show that MMS messages can be successfully transformed to HTML and embedded directly in web pages, thus providing a seamless experience for viewing MMS messages. Depending on the content of the MMS message in question, the current browser and which media player plug-ins are available, the generated HTML will be displayed differently. The results also show that MMS messages can be composed in real time* through a web interface with good results.

Syftet med detta examensarbete är att förenkla utbyte (i båda riktningarna) av multimedia mellan mobiltelefoner och nätverksuppkopplade webbservrar. Lösningen som föreslås i denna rapport behandlar specifikt hur Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)-meddelanden kan visas i en webbläsare via nätverksuppkopplade webbservrar och hur MMS-meddelanden kan komponeras grafiskt via ett webbinterface. Detta examensarbete är viktigt eftersom det för multimedia, i form av MMS-meddelanden, från isolering i telekommunikationsvärlden närmare en bred tillgänglighet via Internet. Denna övergång är viktig eftersom det är på Internet som multimedia görs tillgängligt för världen i dagens läge. ▼ Cdc7-Dbf4 is an essential protein kinase complex required for every single origin firing. As a target of the intra-S checkpoint, Cdc7 kinase activity has also been implicated in the response to replication fork stress, with a role in translesion DNA synthesis (TLS). We have examined the role of Cdc7 in the regulation of replication forks, particularly in response to MMS, which normally stalls replication forks and inhibits late origin firing. We find that replication forks proceed as fast as with no damage along an MMS-damaged template both in cdc7as3 and cdc7-1/mcm5-bob1 cells. However the DNA synthesis in cdc7-1/mcm5-bob1 in MMS is defective, indicated by the slower recovery after MMS by PFGE, suggesting the replication is incomplete. These deregulated forks did not rely on TLS pathway but are dependent on both helicase and E3 ligase function of Rad5 for continued fork progression along MMS-damaged DNA, demonstrating a role for Rad5 at the replication fork. Phosphorylation of MCM2 by DDK was not sufficient for slowing down Mcm2-7 helicase activity in vivo. Temperature-sensitive mutant orc1-161, which is defective in pre-replication complex (pre-RC) assembly, phenocopies the defects in origin firing and faster fork progression in MMS in Cdc7 mutants, suggesting that decreased origin firing is the common source for the deregulated fork progression. We attribute the effect of Cdc7 depletion on replication fork progression in MMS to the reduced origin-firing, which leads to less established forks and in turn the deficient checkpoint activation in MMS. The mec1-100 cells, which initiate many origins but also have compromised checkpoint activation, fail to phenocopy the faster fork movement in MMS, suggesting that the number of active replication forks also influences fork rate, perhaps due to competition for limiting factors for DNA replication. These findings provide new insights into how Cdc7, besides its essential role in replication initiation, could imply a function in the regulation of replication fork progression in response to DNA damage possibly through checkpoint activation and replication fork restart in MMS. Molecular Biology and Genetics

The GADD45 family of proteins consists of three small nuclear proteins, GADD45A, GADD45B, and GADD45G, which are implicated in modulating the cellular response to various types of genotoxic/physiological stress. This family of proteins has been shown to interact with and modulate the function of cell-cycle control proteins, such as p21 and cdc2/cyclin B1, the DNA repair protein, PCNA, key stress response MAP kinases, including MEKK4 (an upstream regulator of JNK kinase), and p38 kinase. Despite similarities in amino acid sequence, structure and function, each gadd45 gene is induced differentially, depending on the type of stress stimuli. For example, the alkylating agent, methylmethane sulfonate (MMS), rapidly induces all three genes, whereas hydrogen peroxide and sorbitol preferentially induce gadd45a and gadd45b, respectively. Studies of the mechanisms of the stress-mediated induction of the gadd45 genes have predominantly focused on gadd45a, with knowledge of gadd45b and gadd45g regulation lacking. Thus, in order to generate a more complete understanding of the collective regulation of the gadd45 genes, a comprehensive analysis of the stress-mediated induction of gadd45b has been carried out. Towards this end, a gadd45b promoter-reporter construct was generated, consisting of 3897bp sequence upstream of the transcription start site of gadd45b, fused to a luciferase reporter. In a human colorectal carcinoma cell line (RKO), in which gadd45b mRNA levels profoundly increase by various stress stimuli, we observe similar, high levels of induction of the gadd45b-luciferase construct with MMS or UVC treatments, but surprisingly not with sorbitol or anisomycin. Linker-scanning mutagenesis of the gadd45b promoter reveals several important MMS and UVC cis-acting responsive elements contained within the proximal promoter, including a GC-rich region and the CCAAT box. Furthermore, we have identified three constitutively bound transcription factors, Sp1, MZF1, and NFY, and one inducible factor, Egr1, which bind to these regions and which contribute to MMS-responsiveness. In contrast, a post-transcriptional mechanism appears to regulate gadd45b induction upon sorbitol treatment, as this treatment increases the gadd45b mRNA half-life, compared to MMS treatment. Interestingly, with the exception of a common cis-element, the stress-mediated induction of gadd45b appears to be mechanistically distinct from gadd45a. In conclusion, this study provides novel evidence that gadd45b induction by distinct stress agents, MMS and sorbitol, is regulated differentially at the level of mRNA transcription or mRNA stability, respectively.

Le repérage des situations à risques est essentiel dans les démarches de prévention : ce repérage appelé «évaluation des risques TMS» repose sur la mobilité d’outils «simples» pour cibler les situations critiques sur lesquelles intervenir. Cette thèse en ergonomie s’intéresse aux difficultés d’utilisation des outils simples des phases initiales des démarches de prévention. Pour répondre à ces difficultés, ce travail étudie l’apport des connaissances du champ de l’ergonomie de l’activité et notamment la Marge de Manoeuvre Situationnelle (MMS). A partir de la documentation sur le modèle de l’activité centré sur la personne (Vézina, 2001), nous avons identifié et listé les indicateurs MMS. Puis nous avons analysé leur place dans les outils simples avec une grille de lecture créée. Enfin, nous avons déployé 9 outils simples et exploré la suffisance MMS sur un échantillon de 10 postes dans une industrie en France. Une liste d’indicateurs des 3 composantes du modèle est proposée pour objectiver la MMS. Nous observons une absence de prise en compte de la MMS et une forte variabilité des résultats des outils simples. Enfin, de manière générale, l’estimation est moins élevée avec la MMS qu’avec les outils simples. La MMS introduit la prise en compte des ressources dont l’opérateur dispose pour faire face aux situations et à leurs enjeux. On peut expliquer de cette manière les écarts avec les outils simples, centrés sur les contraintes. Ce travail montre que la MMS peut apporter des informations complémentaires à celles obtenues par les outils simples. Nos résultats sont en faveur d’une évaluation du risque TMS qui utilise la suffisance MMS pour cibler les situations critiques.

The identification of risk situations is essential in the process of MSD prevention: this identification called "MSD risk assessment" relies on the "simple" risk assessment tools to target critical situations. This thesis focuses on the difficulties of using simple tools in the initial phase of the MSD prevention process. This study, therefore, investigates the contribution of the field of ergonomics of activity and in particular Situational Operational Leeway (SOL) for MSD risk assessment tools. We identified and listed the SOL indicators based on the human-centered model of activity (Vézina, 2001), and then we analyzed the presence of these indicators in the simple tools with a self-developed checklist. Nine simple tools were used to assess a sample of 10 work stations in the manufacturing industry in France. Moreover, a list of indicators derived from three components of the human centered model of activity was proposed to explore the sufficiency of SOL in those work stations.The findings showed that the simple tools do not consider SOL indicators during an assessment and the various assessments with ten simple tools produced different results on the same work station. DNA methylating compounds are widely used as anti-cancer chemotherapeutics. The pharmaceutical critical DNA lesion induced by these drugs is O6-methylguanine (O6MeG). O6MeG is highly mutagenic and genotoxic, by triggering apoptosis. Despite the potency of O6MeG to induce cell death, the mechanism of O6MeG induced toxicity is still poorly understood. Comparing the response of mouse fibroblasts wild-type (wt) and deficient for ataxia telangiectasia mutant protein (ATM), a kinase responsible for both the recognition and the signalling of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), it was shown that ATM deficient cells are more sensitive to the methylating agents N-methyl-N’-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), methyl methansulfonate (MMS) and the anti-cancer drug temozolomide, in both colony formation and apoptosis assays. This clearly shows that DSBs are involved in O6MeG toxicity. By inactivating the O6MeG repair enzyme O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) with the specific inhibitor O6-benzylguanine (O6BG), ATM wt and deficient cells became more sensitive to MNNG and MMS. The opposite effect was observed when over-expressing MGMT in ATM -/- cells. The results show that O6MeG is the critical DNA lesion causing death in ATM cells following MNNG treatment, and is partially responsible for the toxicity observed following MMS treatment. Furthermore, by inhibiting the ATM kinase activity with caffeine, it was shown that the resistance of wt cells to MNNG was due to the kinase activity of ATM, as wt cells underwent more apoptosis following methylating agent treatment in the presence of caffeine. Apoptosis and caspase-3 activation were late events, starting 48h after treatment. This lends support to the model where O6MeG lesions are converted into DSBs during replication. As ATM wt and deficient cells showed similar G2/M blockage and Chk1 activation following MNNG and MMS treatment, it was concluded that the protective effect of ATM is not due to cell cycle progression control. The hypersensitivity of ATM deficient cells was accompanied by their inability to activate the anti-apoptotic NFkB pathway. In a second part of this study, it was shown that the inflammatory cytokine IL-1 up-regulates the DNA repair gene apurinic endonuclease 2 (APEX2). Up-regulation of APEX2 occurred by transcriptional regulation as it was abrogated by actinomycin D. APEX2 mRNA accumulation was accompanied by increase in APEX2 protein level. IL-1 induced APEX2 expression as well as transfection of cells with APEX2 cDNA positively correlated with a decrease in apoptosis after treatment with genotoxic agents, particularly affecting cell death after H2O2. This indicates an involvement of APEX2 in the BER pathway in cells responding to IL-1.

Au cours de ces dernières décennies, le développement de Systèmes Mobiles de Cartographie, soutenu par un progrès technologique important, est devenu plus apparent. Il a été stimulé par le besoin grandissant de collecte d'informations géographiques précises sur l'environnement. Nous considérons, au sein de cette thèse, des solutions pour l'acquisition des nuages de points mobiles de qualité topographique (précision centimétrique). Il s'agit, dans cette tâche, de mettre au point des méthodes de qualification des données, et d'en améliorer sur les erreurs systématiques par des techniques d'étalonnage et de recalage adéquates.Nous décrivons une démarche innovante d'évaluation de l'exactitude et/ou de la précision des relevés laser mobiles. Celle-ci repose sur l'extraction et la comparaison des entités linéaires de la scène urbaine. La distance moyenne calculée entre les segments appariés, étant la distance modifiée de Hausdorff, sert à noter les nuages par rapport à des références existantes. Pour l'extraction des arêtes, nous proposons une méthode de détection d'intersections entre segments plans retrouvés via un algorithme de RANSAC enrichi d'une analyse de composantes connexes. Nous envisageons également une démarche de correction de relevés laser mobiles à travers un recalage rigide fondé, lui aussi, sur les éléments linéaires. Enfin, nous étudions la pertinence des segments pour en déduire les paramètres de l'étalonnage extrinsèque du système mobile. Nous testons nos méthodes sur des données simulées et des données réelles acquises dans le cadre du projet TerraMobilita.

Over the past few decades, the development of land-based Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS), supported by significant technological progress, has become more prominent. It has been motivated by the growing need for precise geographic information about the environment. In this thesis, we consider approaches for the acquisition of mobile point clouds with topographic quality (centimeter-level accuracy). The aim is to develop techniques for data quality assessment and improvement. In particular, we eliminate the systematic errors inherent to an MMS data using appropriate calibration and registration methods.We describe a novel approach to assess the accuracy and/or the precision of mobile laser point clouds. It is based on the extraction and comparison of line features detected within the urban scene. The computed average distance between corresponding pairs of line segments, taking advantage of a modified Hausdorff distance, is used to evaluate the MMS data with respect to a reference data set. For edge extraction, we propose a method which relies on the intersections between planes modelled via the RANSAC algorithm refined by an analysis of connected components. We also consider an approach to correct point clouds using a line-based rigid registration method. ▼ El control traduccional y la traducción selectiva de algunos mRNA representan un mecanismo regulador de las células para adaptarse a diversas condiciones fisiológicas y de estrés ambiental. En Saccharomyces cerevisiae la activación de la ruta de control traduccional GCN, cuyo transductor principal es la quinasa Gcn2p, favorece la adaptación a situaciones de estrés por falta de nutrientes. Gcn2p es activada por tRNA descargados durante condiciones de ayuno de aminoácidos. Gcn2p fosforila eIF2¿ (Sui2p) en ser51 y esto inhibe la traducción general de los mRNA, al mismo tiempo que permite la traducción selectiva de determinados mRNA que son necesarios para la supervivencia celular. Uno de ellos es el mRNA de GCN4, un factor de transcripción que regula genes de biosíntesis de amino ácidos entre otros. El pH intracelular modula la actividad de muchos sistemas celulares, pero los mecanismos de regulación y de percepción son en su mayoría desconocidos. Previamente en el grupo se ha identificado dos genes de S. cerevisiae importantes para la tolerancia a la acidificación intracelular causada por ácidos débiles permeables: LEU2 y GCN2. En la presente tesis se ha comprobado que LEU2, funciona eliminando la dependencia de la absorción de leucina extracelular en cepas con auxotrofia para este aminoácido. Además, se ha profundizado en los mecanismos moleculares por los cuales Gcn2p responde a pH ácido intracelular. La acidificación intracelular activa Gcn2p probablemente por la inhibición de las aminoacil-tRNA sintetasas porque se observa la acumulación de tRNAleu descargados en condiciones sin ayuno de leucina. Gcn2p es requerida para el transporte de leucina y un mutante nulo gcn2¿ es sensible al estrés ácido sí es auxótrofo para leucina y Gcn4p no se requiere para la tolerancia a ácido. Además un mutante ser51>ala en eIF2¿ es sensible a ácido, lo que sugiere que Gcn2p, mediante la fosforilación de eIF2¿, puede activar la traducción de un regulador desconocido de transportadores de aminoácidos distinto de Gcn4p. En relación al estrés genotóxico, evidencias previas muestran que Gcn2p está implicado en el control del ciclo celular en respuesta a daño al DNA regulando la transición de fase G1-S. Pero, ¿cómo ocurre esta respuesta de Gcn2p y qué efectores están implicados? Hemos descubierto que distintos agentes lesionantes del DNA activan la quinasa Gcn2p, entre ellos el agente alquilante MMS. Todos ellos de algún modo generan estrés replicativo. La caracterización genética con los mutantes de la ruta GCN muestra que Gcn1p/Gcn20p están implicados en la fosforilación de eIF2¿ por Gcn2p en respuesta a MMS. Además Gcn1p y Gcn2p puede tener un papel relacionado con la toxicidad por MMS independientemente del control traduccional. ▼ Background and Significance: Project Cell & Tell (C&T) was a mobile health (mHealth) pilot intervention delivered in collaboration with the Denver Indian Health and Family Services (DIHFS) urban clinic. Content for the mHealth project was adapted from a classroom-based health education curriculum called Honoring the Gift of Heart Health (HGHH) and designed to be a standalone mHealth intervention. Short Message Service (SMS; text only) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS; text with images) were used to deliver health information over a five week period using three types of messages: information, quiz, and homework. Each participant received two informational SMSs, two quizzes, and a single homework message per week. The research questions were: (1.) To what extent is the cell phone, as used in C&T, a feasible dissemination tool to increase knowledge of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in an urban American Indian Alaska Native (AI/AN) population? (2.) In an urban AI/AN population, to what extent, if any, does the inclusion of text with photo elicitation (MMS) increase health knowledge and motivation more than text messaging (SMS)? (3.) How applicable were the social science ideas about organic intellectuals and counterhegemonic discourse in shaping the intervention? Methods: Sixteen people received the SMS intervention and 16 people received the MMS intervention. Following the delivery of messages, SMS participants (4, 25%) attended focus groups, and those in the MMS condition (6, 37%) participated in digital photovoice sessions. Baseline and post-intervention health knowledge surveys were collected from participants. Results: Quantitative analysis suggested a positive trend in health knowledge for both the SMS and MMS conditions. Four specific types of health knowledge constructs were analyzed: heart attack knowledge, heart health knowledge, physical activity knowledge, and nutritional knowledge. Statistically significant increases were found in heart attack knowledge (F(1,21)=8.92, p Conclusions: This dissertation project showed that using SMS and MMS cell phone functions to increase health knowledge of cardio vascular disease (CVD) in an urban AI/AN clinic was feasible, that participants who used MMS with photo elicitation gained more health knowledge than those using SMS capabilities, an increase in knowledge regarding signs and symptoms of heart attack by means of mHealth was possible, and blended social theory and behavioral health models could contribute to the cultural adaptation of mHealth strategies to engage underserved AI/ANs. Automated substations and distribution networks are key element of smart grid, however not all substations and distribution networks are automated to date due to the numerous reasons such as cost related to automation and scarcity of skilful workforce. With the drive to integrate renewable energy to the national smart grid, the advanced and innovative integrating methodologies need to be investigated. Automating the power system is the effort to improve power supply security, availability and reliability. Reliability is very important in substation automation systems and is achieved through real-time monitoring of the substation data. The interconnection of substation through substation automation devices is crucial because it provide the backup link to the network in case one substation fails. The utilities has developed a remarkable interest in substation automation due to the benefit its offers such as; reduction in maintenance and, operating cost and improved revenues due to stable power system networks. Substation automation is made up of four main functions that need to be fused together; protection, control, monitoring and, local and remote communications. There are numerous communication protocols available in the market for substation automation applications. However not all of them are utilized in the current application of smart grid.DNP3 and IEC61850 are the leading communication protocols currently. DNP3 has proved its technical advantages over the past few years in substation automation applications. On other hand IEC61850 was only published in 2003 and became more popular in substation around 2006; the standard is only fifteen years old. IEC61850 define the protocols such as; GOOSE, SMV, GSSE, GSE and MMS using its communication profiles. This research will investigate the possibilities of integrating DNP3 data point into IEC61850 data model. With this approach; the legacy substation shown in figure 1.1 will inherit the advantages of IEC61850 such as high speed data exchange, interoperability and interchangeability

▼ Unlike some Asian languages (e.g., Korean), English has lexical stress manifested by four acoustic features: duration, intensity, F0 (pitch), and vowel quality. Lexical stress has been known to have significant influences on native English speakers’ recognition of spoken words. According to Cutler (2015), lexical stress has both suprasegmental and segmental features: Suprasegmental features include duration, intensity, and F0 while vowel quality is considered a segmental feature. However, it is still unclear which lexical features are more responsible for spoken word recognition. This study examined which features, suprasegmental features or vowel quality of English, are a more significant influencer in spoken word recognition using English loanwords in Korean, which lack the prominence of any syllable realized by these features. Additionally, this study investigated the claimed advantage of the strong-weak stress pattern over a weak-strong pattern. To that end, two experiments were conducted. First, a parallel acoustic comparison was made between disyllabic English words and their corresponding English loanwords in Korean in order to investigate whether Korean has lexical stress features similar to those of English. 10 Korean and 10 English native speakers read 20 disyllabic words: the English loanwords in Korean by Korean participants and the source English words by American participants. The results showed that the differences of acoustic values between the syllables of the English words were significantly larger than those of the English loanwords. That is, the relative prominence of the stressed syllable over the unstressed syllable in English was not found in Korean. Additionally, the results indicated that Korean does not have a reduced vowel such as /ə/ in English, which is a critical feature of English vowel quality. In Experiment II, 16 English loanwords were used to create three versions of a spoken word recognition experiment, which was administered using the online survey platform, Qualtrics. Each version had a different type of manipulation: unmanipulated English loanwords, English loanwords with suprasegemental manipulation or English loanwords with vowel quality manipulation. 117 American English hearers identified the spoken words of one of the versions assigned to them; their success rates and reaction times (RT) were recorded. A binominal regression test was used for the analysis of success rates, and the Kruskal-Wallis H test for the response times. The results indicated that as far as success rates are concerned, both suprasegmental features and vowel quality play a role in recognizing spoken English words. However, when these two features were compared, vowel quality seemed to be a much stronger player. La reconnexion magnétique est un processus omniprésent et fondamental dans la physique des plasmas spatiaux. La "Magnetospheric multiscale mission" (MMS) de la NASA, lancée le 12 mars 2015, a été conçue pour fournir des mesures in-situ permettant d'analyser le processus de reconnexion dans la magnétosphère terrestre. Dans ce but, quatre satellites identiquement instrumentés mesurent les champs électromagnétiques et les particules chargées dans les régions de reconnexion, avec une résolution temporelle cent fois meilleure que celle des missions précédentes. MMS permet, pour la première fois, d'étudier les structures microscopiques associées à la reconnexion magnétique et, en particulier, la région de diffusion électronique. Au niveau de la magnétopause terrestre, la reconnexion magnétique a un rôle chef dans le transport de l'énergie du vent solaire vers la magnétosphère terrestre, en convertissant l'énergie magnétique en énergie cinétique et thermique. Les événements à transfert de flux (FTEs) sont considérés comme l'un des produits principaux et les plus typiques de la reconnexion magnétique à la magnétopause terrestre. Cependant, des structures magnétiques 3D plus complexes, avec des signatures similaires à celles des FTEs, peuvent également exister à la magnétopause. On retrouve, par exemple, des tubes de flux entrelacés qui résultent de reconnexions magnétiques ayant eues lieu à des sites différents. La première partie de cette thèse étudie l'un de ces événements, qui a été observé dans des conditions de vent solaire inhabituelles, au voisinage de la magnétopause terrestre par MMS. Malgré des signatures qui, à première vue, semblaient cohérentes avec un FTE classique, cet événement a été interprété comme étant le résultat de l'interaction de deux tubes de flux avec des connectivités magnétiques différentes. La haute résolution temporelle des données MMS a permis d'étudier en détail une fine couche de courant observée à l'interface entre les deux tubes de flux. La couche de courant était associée à un jet d'ions, suggérant ainsi que la couche de courant était soumise à une compression qui a entraîné une reconnexion magnétique à l'origine du jet d'ions. La direction, la vitesse de propagation et la taille de différentes structures ont été déduites en utilisant des techniques d'analyse de données de plusieurs satellites.
