▼ There is currently no evidence describing what characteristics make an Athletic Training Program Director (PD) an effective leader. An influx of accredited programs resulted in a rapid increase in the demand for PDs, yet training and preparation for these positions has failed to evolve. Although Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs) are trained in specific content areas, they may not always be prepared for the administrative and leadership responsibilities associated with the role of PD (Leone, 2008). This dissertation examined the relationships between selected characteristics and leadership outcomes of Athletic Training Program Directors. Each PD participants (n=27) completed a demographic questionnaire to obtain the leader’s academic preparation, accreditation experience and leadership training history. Each participant also completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to obtain leadership styles, behaviors, and outcomes. Overall, the PDs reported utilizing transformational leadership most often and passive avoidant leadership least often. There was no significant difference between PDs with master’s and doctorate degrees on overall leadership outcome. However, participants with a doctorate degree scored significantly different on the effectiveness component of the leadership outcome compared with participants with a master’s degree. Those participants who have completed academic coursework on leadership scored significantly different on the leadership outcome compared to those who have not completed academic coursework on leadership. Findings from this study indicate that changes to the current requirements for the role of PD may be warranted. Consideration should be given to increasing the minimum degree requirement and requiring academic coursework on leadership. Future research may be useful in determining specific degree guidelines and types and amounts of leadership training that would be beneficial to Athletic Training PDs. ▼ This foundational descriptive quantitative study examined leadership styles, traits of distance education leaders (e.g. VPs, Deans, Directors and Coordinators) and distance education program characteristics as well as funding priorities at the post-secondary level. Participants were subjected to Bass and Avolio's Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X), which identified leadership characteristics as transformational, transactional or passive-avoidant as manifest by nine scales as follows: Individualized Influence Attributes, Individualized Influence Behavior, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, Individualized Consideration, Contingent Reward, Active Management-by-Exception, Passive Management-by-Exception and Laissez-Faire. In addition, the questionnaire further assessed leadership outcomes scaled as Extra Effort, Effectiveness and Satisfaction. There were 55 respondents from two-year colleges belonging to the American Association of Community Colleges. Findings indicated that these Distance Education Leaders scored markedly higher (and above the norm) in Transformational Leadership style scales than did past MLQ-5X testees from across all fields. Further, results indicated significant relationships between leadership style and such vitally important organizational characteristics as reporting line and levels of position. Additional statistical significance established positive correlates between Age and Effectiveness and a negative correlate between Age and Active Management-by-Exception. The Years Since Most Recent Degree correlated positively with Individualized Influence Behavior and negatively with Active Management-by-Exception. The Years at the Institution and in the Distance Education Field correlated positively with Satisfaction and negatively with Individualized Influence Attributes. The single most important and top ranked funding priority was Course Design Standards that Focus Upon Learning Outcomes. Recommendations were directed at college, distance education leaders and for the purposes of future research. As online distance education in higher education matures, college and distance education leaders should work together to identify and develop future leaders with transformational leadership style to work in the field. This study showed that taking and teaching online courses will have a positive impact upon that goal as well pursuing an advanced degree. Also, the level of position in the organization and reporting line of the distance education leader made a difference in leadership style. Future research should focus upon further defining the best types of leaders for distance education and how to develop effective future leaders in the field.

▼ The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive study was to identify the self-perceived leadership styles of college academic advisors and to explore the variance in the perceived leadership styles based on demographic information such as academic advising approaches, institutional type, age, years of experience, and gender. Participants were 225 college advisors from among 5,066 members of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) during the 2013-2014 academic year who met study criteria and whose email invitation to complete an online survey was presumably delivered, rendering a 4.44% response rate. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Version 5X (MLQ 5X) with five supplemental questions was used for data collection The composite score for leadership style served as the dependent variable, and advising approach, institutional type, age, years of experience, and gender served as the independent variables for the study. Descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, and a factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for data analysis. The descriptive statistics for this study revealed that college academic advisors represent all points along the entire spectrum of the Full Range Model of Leadership continuum employing different leadership behaviors based on the situation. The descriptive data were supported by the frequency distributions per case which identified transformational leadership as the perceived dominant leadership style for the college academic advisors in this study. A priori to conducting the factorial ANOVA, Leneve’s test for homogeneity of variance indicated a statistically significant coefficient, thus violating the assumption of data normality and rendering the ANOVA findings uninterpretable. An implication of this study is that transformational leadership is the most desired leadership style of the Full Range Model of Leadership for college academic advisors. If this is true, professional development activities for college academic advisors should focus on strengthening transformational leadership behaviors/techniques including with whom and when this leadership style should be employed compared to the other Full Range Model of Leadership styles Advisors/Committee Members: Bush, V. ▼ This study investigates a relatively new area of research, namely, the relationship between attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969, 1973, 1980, 1988) and leadership theory. Attachment theory posits that human beings unconsciously established mental models of how relationships work. Depending on the kind and quality of early relational experiences, humans can associate feelings of security, anxiety, or avoidance with relationships. According to attachment theory, these associations are transferable and inform future relationships. Much of leadership theory suggests that relationships are a key component of effective leadership and may very well be the most important factor (Gardner et al., 2005). Recent quantitative studies align attachment behaviors with transformational and transactional leadership behaviors (Berson, 2006; Boatwright et. al., 2010; Bresnahan, 2008). This study uses population surveying to investigate the clergy of a small, bi-national, Protestant denomination with a total of 995 fulltime, parish-based pastors. This study explores potential relationships between attachment behaviors using the Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ) (Feeney, et al., 1994), and leadership characteristics using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Avolio & Bass, 2004), while controlling for demographic variables. The study confirmed the relationship between attachment security and transformational leadership. The clergy in this study (n=348) scored highest in transformational leadership yet lower than the average benchmarks established by Avolio & Bass (2004). Participants’ work satisfaction levels were consistent with the normative mean establish by Avolio & Bass, but both extra effort and effectiveness means were lower than the norm for other leaders. Surprisingly, this study also revealed that clergy professional longevity reduces with transformational leadership and increases with a more passive style of leadership. ▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived effectiveness of the leadership styles of music department chairs and the responses to the leadership styles by faculty. This study specifically investigated the leadership styles of music department chairs serving in public higher education institutions with NASM accredited music units in the states of Arkansas and Mississippi. The study examined the perceived types of leadership styles used by music department chairs and their relationship with music faculties' self-reported productivity as seen by faculty members within the department. The need for this study is to assist universities in recruiting and developing effective leaders as department chairs. This study used a descriptive correlation design. The data for this study were collected using the survey research approach to examine the perception of the leadership styles by faculty and the effect that style has on music faculty's self-reported productivity. The sample for this study consisted of one hundred and seventy-four (174) faculty members with non-administrative titles and full-time position appointment as senior professors and junior professors. Results from the summary of responses were presented in frequency counts and percentages among the ranks to describe the data. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) was analyzed using chi-square to determine if there were significant differences among the groups. The Spearman rho was used to determine if there was a relationship with music faculty perception of the chair's leadership and self-reported of productivity. Based upon the findings from the MLQ, senior and junior faculty was satisfied with the chair's leadership. In the chi- square findings, the analysis revealed that a significant difference was only found in two subscales, subscales one and eleven. The two subscales are Subscale One "Transformational: Idealized Influence" and Subscale Eleven "Outcomes of Leadership: Effeteness". The Spearman rho revealed that the there is a relationship with the chairs leadership and self-report of productivity from music faculty. Advisors/Committee Members: Alan L. ▼ Abstract The United States government holds high expectations for principals and administrators, as they are responsible for enacting significant change to actualize school improvement and meet national agendas. Schools have specific characteristics that make change extremely challenging to implement, and it is within this context that fostering resilience holds promise. This study was a quantitative, correlational study that looked critically at the relationship between self-perceived resilience and self-perceived transformational leadership among US principals and administrators in K-12 settings. Peer-reviewed research studies addressing resilience and transformational leadership in K-12 education have been minimal, although similar questions in research continue to be posed in other fields outside of education. This study used the PRQ (Personal Resilience Questionnaire), with its seven resiliency dimensions (Conner, 1990; 2004), and the MLQ (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire) from Bass and Avolio (1995; 2015), which contains nine leadership factors, five of which represent transformational leadership, and three transformational leadership outcomes. Demographic variables collected included age, gender, leadership level, educational level, public or private school service, and years of experience as teachers and administrators. Resilience and transformational leadership did not appear to be correlated with age, leadership level, area of service (public or private school administration), or region of service. However, there was a strong, statistically significant positive correlation between self-perceived resilience and self-perceived transformational leadership within the K-12 administrative arena. Additionally, resilience and transformational leadership appeared to be correlated with gender, with transformational leadership positively and significantly correlated with educational levels achieved. Esta dissertação tem como tema os estilos de liderança, tendo sido realizado um estudo que teve como propósito principal identificar e analisar os estilos de liderança percepcionados pelos enfermeiros gestores intermédios em ambiente hospitalar e relacionar/analisar possíveis variáveis, tais como características sócio-demográficas (género, idade), situação profissional (categoria profissional, experiência profissional e experiência na área da gestão) e situação de formação (grau académico e curso de pós licenciatura). A liderança, portanto, foi o conceito mais intensamente estudado. O estudo foi realizado em 5 hospitais do Porto e Vale do Ave. A técnica de recolha de dados que se utilizou foi o questionário de Bass e Avolio (1995) denominado Multifactorial Leadership Questionaire® (MLQ) e um questionário de variáveis sóciodemográficas. Os dados foram tratados estatisticamente, utilizando estatística descritiva e inferencial, este estudo caracteriza-se como quantitativo, descritivo e utilizou-se o método estatístico com testes paramétrico. Dos resultados que se encontraram, verificou-se que a percepção dos cento e vinte cinco (n = 125) enfermeiros gestores intermédios pesquisados, foi uma mistura do estilo de liderança transformacional e transaccional sendo este último menos percepcionado. A alguma distância e com um valor pouco significativo, encontra-se a liderança do estilo laissez-faire. Finalmente sugere-se que este tipo de investigação seja aplicada aos enfermeiros dirigidos para poder comparar os resultados, e também a relacionar com a satisfação no trabalho dos enfermeiros e produtividade do serviço. This thesis is addressing the styles of leadership and was conducted a study that main purpose was to identify the leadership styles of managers perceived by nurses in hospitals and relate / examine possible variables, such as socio-demographic characteristics (gender, age), Occupation (professional, professional experience and expertise in the area of management) and state of training (academic degree and postgraduate course). Leadership, therefore, the concept has been more intensely studied. The study was conducted in 5 hospitals (Porto and Vale do Ave) The technique of gathering data that was used was the questionnaire, Bass and Avolio (1995) called Multifactorial Leadership Questionaire ® (MLQ) and a questionnaire of sociodemographic variables. The data were treated statistically, using descriptive statistics and inferential, this study is known as quantitative, descriptive and used as the statistical method with parametric tests. ▼ The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was to determine the self-perceived leadership style of principals in an era of accountability. The research instrument was the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire with added demographic questions. In addition to the determination of the self-perceived principal leadership style, the intention of this study was to determine the possible relationship of demographic variables such as principal gender, experience, ethnicity, school type (elementary, middle school, and high school), school grade, and school socioeconomic status determined by Title I on leadership styles. The participants of the study were principals from three large school districts in the state of Florida. The dependent variable was the principal leadership style categorized on the Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) as transactional, transformational, or laissez-faire. The MLQ also determined the use of behaviors categorized as laissez-faire, authoritative, or participative. The independent variables were the demographic variables, principal gender, ethnicity, years of experience as a school principal, school type (elementary, middle, and high school), school grade, and school socioeconomic status defined by Title I. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and a series of Factorial ANOVAs to examine the research questions. The results found moderate differences among the demographic variables gender, ethnicity, school level, SES, and change in school grade. No differences were found between leadership styles and the years of experience for principals. The findings of the study may have significance for principals of elementary, middle, and high schools in the identification of different leadership approaches and styles in an era of accountability. The findings of the study may also provide a benefit for principals of schools examining alternative leadership methods to motivate teachers and students to improve academic outcomes.

▼ This study investigated selected elementary school teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership. Ten South Carolina schools were selected based on the criterion of 50% or higher poverty index. Five schools included the feature of recognition by the state for academic success for one year or more over the 2003-2006 timeframe. One hundred three elementary teachers and seven of the 10 schools' principals completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5x-Short (Bass & Avolio, 1995a, 1995b). Given multiple data sources for this study, the question was formulated as follows: How are teacher and principal responses on the MLQ validated by principals' reports of leadership and observations of principals' instructional leadership behaviors in selected cases of schools in the context of educational accountability policy? MLQ responses were explored using a variety of statistical strategies including t-tests, linear regression, canonical correlation and chi-squares. Seven principals participated in open-ended questions through interviews and written responses. Follow-up observations of four principals were used to validate four leadership scales produced from the MLQ analysis of teachers' perspectives as more potent. Those four scales included Attributed Charisma, Inspirational Motivation, Contingent Reward, and Intellectual Stimulation. The researcher designed an observation instrument and observed an entire day. This exploratory study offered some insights into the degree to which the MLQ provides information about these selected principals' leadership styles in the context of educational accountability. First, results of the t-tests and linear regressions showed that the MLQ was not able to discriminate between the five state-recognized schools for high achievement and the other five not so recognized. The observations led to more in-depth analysis of 45 teachers' responses. Chi-square results among teachers' perceptions of their observed principals showed that principals leading instructional changes produced more variability in teachers' MLQ responses. Teachers tended to be more divided in their perceptions about the effectiveness of their principals' leadership styles, when the principal was exercising instructional leadership strategies. Thus, the MLQ may not be a suitable instrument for measuring principals' leadership in the context of educational accountability policy. More research needs to be conducted to see if this finding is robust in other states given their accountability contexts. Zadnje čase strokovnjaki razvijajo raznovrstne multidimenzionalne modele vodenja, s katerimi si prizadevajo pripomoči k učinkovitejšemu vodenju človeškega kapitala organizacij, ki si želijo biti v koraku s časom. Eden izmed sodobno najbolj raziskovanih in veljavnih modelov vodenja enaindvajsetega stoletja, je celostni model vodenja (ang. Full Range Leadership Model - FRLM), kateri vsebuje integriran pregled komponent transakcijskega in transformacijskega vodenja, njegove meritve pa se izvajajo z vprašalnikom multifaktorskega vodenja (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire - MLQ). V raziskovalnem razdelku magistrskega dela sem v okviru pozitivistične paradigme, skozi vprašalnik multifaktorskega vodenja, iskala odgovor na zastavljeno raziskovalno vprašanje, kateri je prevladujoči stil vodenja s strani top managementa družbe X, transakcijski ali transformacijski. Rezultati analize so pokazali, da so top managerke in managerji družbe X sicer bolj nagnjeni k transformacijskemu vodenju, a je bila vendarle razlika povprečne vrednosti med transakcijskim in transformacijskim vodenjem zanemarljiva. Največje povprečje so pri transformacijskem vodenju dosegli v »inspiracijskem motiviranju«, pri transakcijskem pa v »pogojen magrajevanju«, kar po mojem mnenju predstavlja izvrstno kombinacijo dveh komponent FRLM-ja - na eni strani top management, z inspiracijskim motiviranjem, dosega k odnosom usmerjeno vedenje ter na drugi, s pogojnim nagrajevanjem, k nalogam usmerjeno vedenje. Moje zanimanje je bilo naklonjeno tudi ugotavljanju statistično značilnih razlik med spoloma, pri komponentah transakcijskega in transformacijskega vodenja. In recent years planty of multidimensional leadership models have been brought to full development in order to contribute more effective ways of leading human capital. One of the most researched and validated leadership model in use world wide today is Full Range Leadership Model (FRLM), which gives an integrated overview of its factors, i.e. elements of transformational and transactional leadership. Measurement of transactional and transformational leader behaviours in the organizational sciences is being carry out by the instrument called Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). ▼ The study evaluates the perceived effectiveness of the leadership styles of deans in Ethiopian governmental Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. The study was contextualised within the domain of relevant leadership theory in chapter 2 (with specific emphasis on the Full Range Leadership model developed by Bass and Avolio), and within the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training in chapter 3. A mixed method research methodology was employed in the empirical research. The quantitative part received the most emphasis, while a qualitative part was added to attempt to corroborate findings. Quantitative data were collected from teachers (219), student council members (65) and deans (10) in ten TVET colleges using the MLQ 5x short-form questionnaire, which is a standardised questionnaire of high repute. The quantitatively collected data were analysed and presented using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The qualitative part consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted with the ten deans and one TVET Bureau Head. Quantitative findings indicated that the transformational and transactional leadership styles were observed far more frequently than the laissez-faire style. Perceptions regarding the effectiveness of deans, teachers’ job satisfaction and teachers’ willingness to make an extra effort were positively and statistically significantly influenced by the presence of both the transformational and the transactional leadership styles and to a slight extent, influenced negatively by the interaction effect of the two styles. Qualitative findings mostly corroborated the quantitative findings. Recommendations emanating from the research inter alia include: Leadership training opportunities for TVET deans should be scheduled to enhance the appropriate leadership style practice of deans (especially the transformational style); resources (human, financial and materials) should be made available to TVET colleges to develop desired types of leadership in colleges; as part of the selection process when appointing new TVET deans, the leadership style/s that applicants use at that stage should be assessed; a staff-dean-team-approach will be productive if the dean practises a transformational-orientated style of leadership. ▼ The hotel industry is the cornerstone of success for the Thai economy and effective leadership in Thai hotels contributes significantly to the profits gained in this industry. Middle managers are therefore critical in the Thai hotel industry because they must lead staff effectively to achieve organisational goals. This research thus investigates the leadership styles of a sample of hotel middle managers in Thailand. The literature review examines leadership and management, leadership theories, leadership styles and the instruments used to measure leadership styles in the Thai hotel cultural context. A number of leadership style instruments such as the DISC are discussed and justification is given for the appropriateness of the use of the MLQ (5X-Short Form),which denotes three leadership styles, namely Transformational Leadership Style, Transactional Leadership Style and Laissez-Faire Leadership Style in this context. The literature review also focuses on Hofstede‟s Cultural Dimensions in the Thai cultural context. The existing literature on leadership indicates that the leadership behaviours of managers are an important factor for organisations. Each manager utilises different techniques to control their staff to achieve organisational goals. Therefore, this research focused on dominant leadership styles and the levels of extra effort, effectiveness and satisfaction of three leadership styles. The research also focused on leadership techniques of middle managers in Thailand. Moreover, this research focused on characteristics of managers such as gender, age and levels of education. Finally, this research used Hofstede‟s Cultural Dimensions to identify the effects of Thai cultural influences of middle managers. There are five research questions which are as follows: 1) What is the dominant leadership style of Thai hotel middle managers according to the MLQ (5X-Short Form) instrument, which denotes Transformational Leadership Style, Transactional Leadership Style and Laissez-Faire Leadership Style? 2) What are the differences in demographics of the Thai hotel middle managers represented in each of the above three leadership styles? 3) What are the differences between the constructs of extra effort, effectiveness and satisfaction among Thai hotel middle managers represented in each of the above three leadership styles? 4) What are the differences between the leadership techniques used by Thai hotel middle managers represented in each of the above three leadership styles? 5) What are the effects of Thai cultural influences on Thai hotel middle managers represented in each of the above three leadership styles? Der Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) erfasst neun Facetten des Führungsverhaltens. Das Instrument wird jedoch häufig kritisiert, da die fünf transformationalen Facetten empirisch nicht differenziert werden können und Contingent Reward ein transaktionaler Aspekt des Führungsverhaltens hohe Korrelationen mit den transformationalen Skalen aufweist. Die Effektivität transformationaler Führung und ihre positive Beziehung zu erwünschten organisationalen Variablen wie etwa Arbeitszufriedenheit, wird in der Literatur jedoch durchweg bestätigt. Die dem MLQ 5X Short zugrunde liegende Faktorstruktur wird daher ebenso untersucht wie die Beziehung des MLQs zu anderen Führungsfragebogen sowie unterschiedlichen externen Kriterien. Die dem MLQ vorgegebene Faktorstruktur kann ebenso wenig bestätigt werden wie andere alternative Faktormodelle. Eine Parallelanalyse deutet darauf hin, dass aus dem Itempool drei Faktoren zu extrahieren sind. Die so erhaltene reduzierte Version unterteilt sich in einen transformationalen, einen transaktionalen und einen passiv-vermeidenden Faktor. Der Vergleich des MLQ mit einem anderen Fragebogen zur transformationalen Führung lässt eine hohe Überschneidung der meisten transformationalen Skalen erkennen. Die transformationale Facette der hohen Leistungserwartung zeigt allerdings deutlich geringere Zusammenhänge mit den transformationalen Skalen des MLQ. Consideration und Initiating Structure korrelieren ebenfalls positiv mit den transformationalen Skalen des MLQ. Hierbei korreliert Consideration mit den Skalen des MLQ in einem Bereich von r = .55 bis r = .72, Initiating Structure zeigt geringere Korrelationen. Initiating Structure zeigt jedoch hohe Korrelationen mit der transaktionalen Skala Management by exception active. Die eher passiven Facetten des MLQ zeigen negative Korrelationen mit diesen Skalen. Der Augmentationseffekt der transformationalen Führung über die transaktionale Führung hinaus wird auch in dieser Studie bestätigt. Weiterhin kann gezeigt werden, dass die transformationalen Skalen des MLQ ebenfalls signifikante zusätzliche Varianz in solchen Kriterien im Vergleich zu den anderen beiden Führungsfragebögen aufklärt. Zusätzlich differenziert transformationale Führung zwischen hohen und niedrigen Ausprägungen der Arbeitszufriedenheit und des Commitments. ▼ The present study examined the relationship between aspiring school principals’ self-perceived competency regarding expected leadership behaviors as indicated by the domains identified in the 2011 Florida Principal Leadership Standards and their perception of their leadership style as indicated by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass & Avolio, 1994). The conceptual frameworks of this study included leadership style, as defined and conceptualized by Bass and Avolio’s Full Range Leadership Model and measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), and leadership behavior, as defined through the domains of the Florida Principal Leadership Standards (FPLS, 2011). Both the MLQ and the FPLS questionnaire served as data collection instruments. The three main leadership styles measured by the MLQ (including transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership) served as the independent variables, and the four leadership domains measured by the FPLS questionnaire (i.e., student achievement, instructional leadership, organizational leadership, professional and ethical behavior) served as the dependent variables. The research sample included participants currently enrolled in a state-approved Level 1 Educational Leadership Program and were recruited to participate from 3 state universities in Florida. Both survey instruments were administered via a single, anonymous link embedded in an email containing both an introduction and description of the research study and informed consent. Of 200 potential participants, 48 respondents or 24% of the original sample returned completed surveys. Using canonical correlation analysis, the study found that the degree of respondents’ self-perceived ability to competently perform the leadership behaviors as identified by the four 2011 FPLS domains could be explained to some degree by respondents’ self-perceived leadership style (as identified on the MLQ). Two canonical roots were interpreted. The MLQ predictor variables accounted for 48% of the variance in the FPLS subscale scores (root 1 Rc2 =.48; p < .001). For this root, transformational leadership was the primary independent variable accounting for variance across all 4 FPLS domains. Canonical root 2 (Rc2 = .117) accounted for a moderate amount of the shared variance between the two sets (i.e., 12%) and was not statistically significant (p > .05). The correlation in this root was due primarily to a direct relationship between MLQ transactional leadership and the professional and ethical behavior domain of the FPLS. Additionally, the findings indicated that participants of Level 1 Educational Leadership programs felt confident in their ability to competently perform the expected behavioral indicators of the 2011 FPLS domains.

▼ The present study examined how athletic directors perceive their leadership roles in interscholastic athletics and the relationship of their leadership styles to their job satisfaction. The conceptual framework of this study was Bass and Avolio’s (1994) full range leadership model, also known as the transformational-transactional leadership model, which consists of 9 factors—5 transformational behaviors: idealized influence (attributed), idealized influence (behavior), inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration; 2 transactional behaviors: contingent reward and management-by-exception (active); 2 passive/avoidant behaviors: management-by-exception (passive) and laissez-faire. These 9 factors are measured by the Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The study was also informed by Chelladurai’s multidimensional model of leadership in sport which focuses on transformational effects of sport leaders on individual satisfaction and group performance. The study was significant in that the effects of transformational leadership on individuals in sporting organizations have not been fully explored in previous research. Both the MLQ and the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) served as data collection tools. A sample of 500 athletic directors from across the United States was invited to participate in an electronic survey. Usable data were returned by 55 (11%) of the original sample. Participants self-assessed their leadership styles via the MLQ and job satisfaction via the MSQ. Data were analyzed via canonical correlation analysis followed by canonical commonality analysis. One canonical root was interpreted (Rc2 = .22; pCanonical structure coefficients indicated that Transformational and Passive/Avoidant Leadership made major contributions to the predictor canonical variate; the dependent canonical variate was defined by both Intrinsic and Extrinsic Satisfaction. Canonical commonality analysis indicated that Transformational Leadership had the largest unique variance partition; the largest common variance partition was shared by Transformational and Passive/Avoidant. The analysis also indicated two variable suppressor effects. There was a moderate correlation between athletic directors’ leadership styles and their job satisfaction; however, the directionality of the relationships of the variables in the leadership set with satisfaction was unexpected: (a) the relationship between transformational leadership and job satisfaction was found to be negative, and (b) the relationship between passive/avoidant leadership and job satisfaction was positive.

▼ The APTA has identified the roles of the CCCE and CI as leaders in physical therapy clinical education. In the literature there appears to be an absence of studies examining the CCCE and CI leadership style and its impact on the preparation for clinical instruction, extra effort, job satisfaction and effectiveness of quality clinical education. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership styles of CIs and CCCEs and to discern if there was a correlation between CI’s and CCCE’s perceptions of leadership style and perceptions of leadership effectiveness based upon three leadership outcomes. The second purpose of this study was to assess the influence of background demographic factors and leadership behaviors. The sample consisted of 58 CCCEs and 19 CIs. Subjects completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Form-5X created by Bass and Avolio, which measured Transformational, Transactional and Laissez –faire leadership behaviors and leadership outcomes of effectiveness, extra effort and satisfaction. Additionally, the subjects completed the Clinical Educator Profile, which measured personal attributes and clinical education program information. Descriptive statistics, Regression analysis, and Pearson correlation were used to analyze the data. The results suggest a positive correlation that CCCEs and CIs perceive themselves as implementing Transformational leadership behaviors and to a lesser extent Transactional leadership behaviors and leadership outcomes. CCCE results revealed that a significant positive relationship (p < .01) existed between the three leadership outcomes of extra effort, effectiveness, and satisfaction and Transformational leadership style. CI results revealed that a positive relationship (p < .01) existed between the three leadership outcomes of extra effort, effectiveness, and satisfaction and Transformational leadership style. The CI results also support that a positive relationship (p < .01 and p < .05) exists between the three leadership outcomes of extra effort, effectiveness, and satisfaction and Transactional leadership style. A significant positive relationship (p < .01) between CCCE demographic factors and Transformational leadership behaviors was also noted. Lastly, a significant positive relationship (p < .01 and p< .05) was found for CI demographic factors and several Transformational and Transactional behaviors. ▼ Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in Malaysia’s economy and social wellbeing. Employees who are managed by effective leaders sustain the SMEs’ organisational performance and contribute to their success. Leadership effectiveness of managers means leadership that influences the work efforts, effectiveness and satisfaction of the employees. The constructs such as SMEs, leadership, leadership effectiveness and organisational performance have captured the interest of scholars and practitioners alike. Literature concerning leadership, leadership effectiveness and organisational performance, alongside literature on Full Range of Leadership formulated by Avolio and Bass (1991), was reviewed. The literature highlighted the lack of localised leadership studies as they are either lean towards large organisations or have a Western bias. The studies of leadership and organisational performance in Malaysia are also few in number. Specifically, empirical studies with the constructs of Full Range of Leadership and Outcomes of Leadership in the context of SMEs in Malaysia are limited. The literature concerning SMEs operating in the wholesale subsector of the distributive trade sector in Malaysia was also reviewed to gain more insight into their unique characteristics, challenges and opportunities. The literature highlighted gaps in leadership knowledge and practical skills, and in SMEs’ organisational performance, and included calls for more academic and practical contributions. The calls for improving leadership framework, training and policies to heighten the SMEs performances have motivated this research. This research focuses on the leadership styles and leadership outcomes of Malaysian managers working in SMEs. This research aims to determine the most dominant leadership styles of the managers and which leadership style is the most effective in influencing the outcomes of leadership. This research also aims to ascertain the difference of the outcomes of leadership between the owner-managers and non-owner-managers. The three research questions for this research are: 1. What is the most dominant leadership style (Transformational, Transactional and Laissez-faire) manifested by Malaysian managers? 1.
