▼ Cache coherency is crucial to multi-core systems with a shared memory programming model. Coherency protocols have been formally verified at the architectural level with relative ease. However, several subtle issues creep into the hardware realization of cache in a multi-processor environment. The assumption, made in the abstract model, that state transitions are atomic, is invalid for the HDL implementation. Each transition is composed of many concurrent multi-core operations. As a result, even with a blocking bus, several transient states come into existence. Most modern processors optimize communication with a split-transaction bus, this results in further transient states and race conditions. Therefore, the design and verification of cache coherency is increasingly complex and challenging. Simulation techniques are insufficient to ensure memory consistency and the absence of deadlock, livelock, and starvation. At best, it is tediously complex and time consuming to reach confidence in functionality with simulation. Formal methods are ideally suited to identify the numerous race conditions and subtle failures. In this study, we perform formal property verification on the RTL of a multi-core level-1 cache design based on snooping MESI protocol. We demonstrate full-proof verification of the coherence module in JasperGold using complexity reduction techniques through parameterization. We verify that the assumptions needed to constrain inputs of the stand-alone cache coherence module are satisfied as valid assertions in the instantiation environment. We compare results obtained from formal property verification against a state-of-the-art UVM environment. We highlight the benefits of a synergistic collaboration between simulation and formal techniques. We present formal analysis as a generic toolkit with numerous usage models in the digital design process. ▼ Cerebral blood flow (CBF) measures are central to the investigation of ischemic strokes, spreading depressions, functional and neuronal activation. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) is an optical imaging technique that has been used to obtain CBF measures in vivo at high spatial and temporal resolutions, by quantifying the localized spatial blurring of backscattered coherent light induced by blood flow. Despite being widely used for biomedical applications, LSCI's critical limitations such as its tendency to underestimate large flow changes and its inability to accurately estimate CBF through a thinned skull have not been overcome. This dissertation presents a new Multi Exposure Speckle Imaging (MESI) technique that combines a new instrument and mathematical model to overcome these limitations. Additionally, in a pilot clinical study, an adapted neurosurgical microscope was used to obtain intra-operative LSCI images of CBF in humans. The MESI instrument accurately estimates experimental constants by imaging backscattered speckles over a wide range of the camera's exposure durations. The MESI mathematical model helps account for light that has scattered from both static and moving particles. In controlled flow experiments using tissue simulating phantoms, the MESI technique was found to estimate large changes in flow accurately and the estimates of flow changes were found to be unaffected by the presence of static particles in these phantoms. In an in vivo experiment in which the middle cerebral artery in mice was occluded to induce ~100% reduction in CBF, not only was the reduction in CBF accurately estimated by the MESI technique but these estimates of CBF changes were found to be unaffected by the presence of a thinned skull. The validity of statistical models used to derive the MESI mathematical model was confirmed using in vivo dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements of CBF in mice. The MESI technique's potential to estimate absolute values of CBF in vivo was demonstrated by comparing CBF estimates obtained using the MESI technique to DLS measurements. The MESI technique's ability to measure CBF changes quantitatively through a thinned skull makes it particularly useful in chronic and long term studies leading to the development of better, more accurate stroke models. In our present day, the term “chivalry” is understood to define the gentlemanly conduct of a man with respects to a female counterpart. In the fifteenth century, the term “chivalry” is applied in a broader sense, referring to the inter-dynamics of a grouping of knights. “Chivalry” thus examines the bachelorhood of the knight and the magnanimous and egalitarian nature of his position. Italians have been aware of Arthurian legends since at least the eleventh century. In fifteenth century Northern Italy, chivalric literature enjoyed refreshed interest due to an outpouring of Italian and French translations. Borso d’Este (1413-1471), although illegitimate, was the second sovereign son of Niccolò III d’Este of Ferrara. Borso’s illegitimacy and lifestyle made it advantageous for him to embody a knightly persona. In doing so, he employed a variety of artistic campaigns that hyperbolized his pedigree. This thesis focuses on one of these campaigns, the Hall of the Months, in the Palazzo Schifanoia, an Este hunting retreat on the outskirts of Ferrara. Francesco del Cossa and Cosmè Tura painted the Hall of the Months. The program for the fresco cycle is complex. The twelve calendar months run clockwise around the room. Horizontally, the hall is divided into three registers, from bottom to top: earth, corresponding zodiacal signs, and corresponding deities. Considering the 1:1 scaling and expansive proportions of the Hall of the Months (24 m long, 11 m long, and 7.5 m high), the earthly tier illusionistically places viewers outdoors and serve as a reminder of Borso’s place among sovereigns. Themes of civic harmony abated any fear of discord or aggression. Previous scholarship has tended to focus on the astrological aspects of the Hall of the Months. However, its chivalric imagery has either been neglected or not fully explored. Thus, this thesis focuses only on the “earthly” register, whose chivalric imagery promulgates Borso’s carefully crafted persona. By providing a new focus of interest for the Hall of the Months, I hope to open the field to further research about Borso’s biography as well as the importance of chivalric literature in fifteenth-century Italy and in fifteenth-century Italian art.
