Introduction: There are many equations to estimate respiratory muscle strength (RMS) with different predictive values. Thus, the chosen equation can decisively influence the diagnosis of the situation of the respiratory muscles and interfere with clinical decision-making. The chosen reference equation becomes as relevant as the correct technique and the measured result. Objective: To compare the predictive value of 4 reference equations with the FMR values: maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP), measured in elderly neuropaths and indicate…

incapacidade e mortalidade no mundo.
Entretanto,
inspirat?ria m?xima (PIm?x) e a press?o expirat?ria m?xima (PEm?x). O desfecho secund?rio
independ?ncia funcional (MIF).
apresentou fraqueza muscular respirat?ria.

We often face patients searching for rehabilitation for lower back disorders during the physiotherapeutic routine, and it is known that the abdominal muscle, specially the rectus abdominis muscle, aid the stabilization of the pelvis. Therefore, this paper analyzes the electrical activity of the rectus abdominis muscle in the pelvic retroversion in dorsal decubitus and in orthostatic position and in the lowering of the lower limbs. 30 healthy students, male and female, 17 40 yr, divided into two groups Group 1: 15 volunteers (pelvic balance); Group 2 (pelvic unbalance) took part in this study. The electrical activity of the right and left supra-umbilical and infra-umbilical portions of the rectus abdominis muscle was detected. The mean RMS values from three attempts from the electromyographic traces were used for the analysis of the electrical activity. The RMS value was submitted to the normalization process. The data were submitted to statistic treatment by the Friedman test, and the analyses of the means and standard deviation towards a level of significance of 95%. The results demonstrated that the portions of the rectus abdominis muscle presented low…

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic idiopathic disease of the central nervous system, which leads to progressive neuronal loss in the ventrolateral cell group of the compact part of the black matter of the midbrain, causing neurotransmitter dopamine depletion. As a result, tremor develops at rest, muscle stiffness and bradykinesia. Although PD also causes non-motor symptoms related to the main causes of death in these individuals, scientific research mainly addresses neuromotor symptoms. Objective: To analyze the risk of…

▼ The study of the emotions in the Essais of Montaigne shows a complex phenomenon, which demonstrate the great assumption of the Montaigne’s anthropology: man is an undividable unity of body and soul. Like human being, the emotion is a mixture experience that has a double aetiology: it raise in the body and in the soul. For his particular constitution, man is naturally
subject to « nombre infiny des passions », and the wisdom of the Essais is nothing else that the ability of governing and harmonising the emotional forces, for realise the only human possible perfection: enjoy the proper life in his immanent singularity (sçavoir jouyr loiallement de son estre). For that goal, the moral philosophy needs to know the real physiological and psychological powers and limits of human being, because wisdom must be useful et practicable. The knowing of the body in the Essais will lead to a deconstruction of the hylomorphic psychology and to the affirmation of the independence and autonomy of the body’s dynamism: the experience of the involuntary actions and sensible emotions arise without any reference to the aristotelic psyché, and the soul fell this events as affections. On the other side, the psychological knowledge tries to understand, b the introspection, the psychological acts (linked to imagination and judgement) that constitutes the emotions of the soul. By that understanding, the soul discover his power of arising the emotions, that witch give him the concrete possibility of manage the conflicts and the tensions between passions, using the power of other different passions. This process, in the third book of the Essais, sketch a real discipline of the soul that is an administration of the soul’s emotions («passions de l’ âme») and of the body’s emotions («passions corporelles»): the soul has to rest in connection with his body, and in doing so it can intensify the psychosomatic unity. It is in that unity, constantly reaffirmed, that man has access to the enjoyment of his proper being and to the moral perfection.

▼ Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that influences different aspects of the cellular homeostasis and regulates several physiological processes. It is normally produced endogenously starting from aminoacid L-arginine but recent evidences suggest that it can be also increased through the ingestion of food rich in inorganic nitrate (mainly green leafy vegetables and beetroot). Indeed, ingested inorganic nitrate (NO3-), after been absorbed, can be converted in the oral cavity to nitrite (NO2-) and be finally reduced into NO in the blood. This alternative NO3- - NO2- - NO pathway seems facilitated in condition of low O2 availability (ischemia and hypoxia) and low pH.
In the last 10 years, several studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of dietary NO3- supplementation on skeletal muscle function, since NO regulates microvascular blood flow, muscle contractile proprieties, glucose homeostasis, intracellular calcium handling, and mitochondrial respiration. Dietary NO3- supplementation is likely to elicit a positive outcome when testing endurance exercise capacity in healthy subjects and enhance exercise tolerance in patients. However, there are still unresolved questions about the mechanisms utilized by inorganic NO3- to affect skeletal muscle functions, the possible potentiating effect of hypoxic conditions and the effectiveness of this intervention in other disease populations. My PhD projects tried to address some of these questions.
The first study aimed to examine the effects of increased NO bioavailability on contraction economy. One of the most interesting effects of dietary NO3- supplementation is the reduction of muscle O2 consumption (V ̇O_2) at a given exercise intensity, since the V ̇O_2 requested to carry out a specific exercise is generally a fixed amount regardless of sex, age and training status of the
subject involved in the exercise. A lower V ̇O_2 during moderate intensity exercise has been demonstrated both in healthy subjects and disease patients after dietary NO3- supplementation. The mechanistic basis is not clear yet, and this effect has been related to reduced ATP cost of contraction and/or an enhanced mitochondrial coupling efficiency. In our study, we evaluated skeletal muscle contraction economy following NO2- infusion in hypoxic condition. Contractions of the in-vivo isolated canine muscle were obtained by direct nerve stimulation. Muscle blood flow was kept constantly high by pump-perfusion. O2 consumption during exercise was assessed directly by Fick method. Mitochondrial respiration rates were evaluated by high-resolution respirometry from muscle biopsies. In hypoxic conditions, but in the presence of constant and normal convective O2 delivery, NO2- infusion did not affect canine skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism. These evidences suggest that the effects of increased NO availability on muscle contraction efficiency in hypoxia, if present, are likely not attributable to changes in mitochondrial respiratory efficiency.
The second study aimed to investigate the effects of…

▼ Previous publications from our laboratory showed the occurrence of important damages in the cardiovascular homeostasis of malnourished rats. Malnutrition can affect the renal hemodinamics, neural and humorais mechanisms of cardiovascular regulation and also seems to increase the simpathetic efferent activity. This work aimed and evaluate the subsequent alterations in the mean arterial pressure (MAP) and in the heart rate (HR) of awake rats, before and after the blockade of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) through systemic administration of inhibitor of the converting enzyme of angiotensin or the AT1 receptor antagonist. Moreover we evaluated the possible interplay among the RAS and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to the maintenance of the baseline mean arterial pressure of malnourished animals. The 64 Fischer male rats used in the present study were divided in two groups: control and malnourished. Baseline MAP and HR were significantly different between the control (106 Â 2 mmHg e 437 Â 8 bpm, n = 32) and malnourished groups (119 Â 3 mmHg e 470 Â 13 bpm, n = 32). The enalapril systemic administration (5 mg/kg i.v.) reduced basal MAP in the malnourished group (37 Â 4 mmHg, n = 8) but no significant change occured in the control group (3 Â 2 mmHg, n = 8). The administration of losartan (10 mg/kg i.v.) also reduced the basal MAP of the malnourished group to a significant lower value (41 Â 5 mmHg, n = 8) when compared to the values observed in the control group (3 Â 1 mmHg, n = 8). In order to evaluate the relative role of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and RAS in the maintenance of the arterial pressure, i.v. injections of losartan (10 mg/kg) and prazosin (1mg/kg) were performed, always observing 20 minutes of interval between the drugs. Losartan induced greater reductions in the baseline MAP of malnourished animals (43 Â 5 mmHg, n = 8) than in the control group (8 Â 3 mmHg, n = 8). The subsequent i.v. administration of prazosin reduced MAP of the control group (30 Â 4 mmHg, n = 8), an effect that was greater when compared to the malnourished group (17 Â 7 mmHg, n = 8). Nevertheless, the total reduction of MAP, after the double blockade, elicited in the malnourished group (60 Â 4 mmHg, n = 8) was greater in comparison to control group (35 Â 5 mmHg, n = 8). Also, the administration of these drugs in the inverse order (i.e. prazosin followed by losartan) elicited the following results: when losartan was injected first we observed greater reductions in the MAP of malnourished group (38 Â 3 mmHg, n = 8) in relation to the control group (8 Â 2 mmHg, n = 8). The subsequent prazosin i.v. administration promoted similar reductions in the two groups, control (22 Â 4 mmHg, n = 8) and malnourished (25 Â 3 mmHg, n = 8). In this protocol the total reduction of MAP, after the double blockade, was greater in the malnourished group (54 Â 3 mmHg, n = 8) in comparison to the control group (26 Â 4 mmHg, n = 8). Therefore, the present study suggest important role of the SNS and RAS in the maintenance of the elevated baseline…

▼ Hypertension may occur due to hyperactivity of neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) (Chan et al. 1991; Boone and McMillen, 1994, Suzuki et al. 1994; Minson et al., 1996) and/or due to a reduced tone of GABAergic neurons of the caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM) that projects to the RVLM. Furthermore, during hypertension occurs an elevation of nitric oxide (NO) in the CVLM. However, there are no conclusive studies about the role of NO in the CVLM during development and/or maintenance of this pathology. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of NO in the CVLM on the mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and reflex bradycardia in renovascular hypertensive rats (2K1C). Male Fisher rats (150 to 200g) were anesthetized with a mixture of ketamine (50 mg / kg, ip) and xylazine (5 mg / kg, ip) for the 2K1C or SHAM surgeries. 30 days after these surgeries, the 2K1C and SHAM animals were anesthetized with urethane (1.2 g / kg, ip), positioned in a stereotactic apparatus to expose the medulla and instrumented for MAP and HR measurements. Baroreflex control of HR was determined by recording reflex heart rate changes in response to transient increases in MAP produced by repeated bolus injections of graded doses of phenylephrine (0.25 to 5 mg, iv) before and after microinjections of L-NAME (10nmol) or L-ARGININE (50nmol). After carrying out the experiments the animals were sacrificed. The kidneys and heart were weighed and the brain submitted to histological analysis. The 2K1C animals showed lower relative weight of the left kidney (clipped) (0.28 0.02 g, n=11), increased relative weight of the contralateral kidney (0.52 0.05 g, n=11), greater relative heart weight (0.41 0.02 g, n=11) and left ventricle (0.31 0.02, n=11) and an increase in MAP (142 3 mmHg, n = 36) compared to the SHAM rats (0.34 0.01 g, 0.35 0.01 g, 0.30 0.01 g, 0.20 0.01 g, n = 11 and 106 2 mmHg, n=42 respectively) The microinjection of L-NAME in the CVLM produced a fall in MAP and HR of both animals 2K1C (-17 3 mmHg and -29 8 beats/min, n=7, respectively) and SHAM animals (-17 3 mmHg and -39 15 beats/min, n=6, respectively). The microinjection of L- ARGININE in the CVLM produced an increase in MAP and variable changes in the HR in 2K1C (11 3 mmHg and -12 6 beats/min, n = 6, respectively) and in the SHAM rats (11 1 mmHg and 8 8 beats/min, n=11, respectively). In 2K1C rats, we observed that the duration of the bradycardia produced by XI microinjection of L-NAME in the CVLM was lower (11 1 min, n=11) than in SHAM animals (23 3 min, n=6). In addition, the duration of the hypertensive effect of microinjection of L- ARGININE in 2K1C rats (26 7 min, n=4) and the variable changes produced by microinjection of L- ARGININE on the HR (32 5 min, n=6) were higher when compared to SHAM rats (10 2 min and 14 4 min, n=7-10, respectively). Cardiovascular effects produced by microinjection of L- ARGININE in the CVLM were abolished by prior microinjection of L-NAME in the CVLM of SHAM and 2K1C rats. The reflex bradycardia sensitivity in…

▼ Previous studies from our laboratory suggest that protein malnutrition after weaning promotes changes in neurotransmission of cardiovascular reflexes in rats. The present study evaluates whether the protein malnutrition alters the expression of c-fos (immediate-early gene expression) in important areas involved in control of cardiovascular reflexes, after intermittent stimulation of the baroreflex. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee on Use of Animals (CEUA - UFOP; Protocol 2009/09). The main areas studied were: the paraventricular hypothalamus (PVH) nucleus solitary tract (NTS), rostral ventromedial medulla (RVMM), rostral (RVLM) and caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM). Male Fisher rats at 28 days old were divided into two groups: control (C) (standard diet containing 15% protein) and malnourished (MN) (low protein diet with 6% protein). After 35 days of diet, perform cannulation of the femoral artery and vein to record cardiovascular and drug infusion, respectively. Two days later, we performed a baroreflex activation by intermittent infusions of 0.9% saline (salt) or phenylephrine (Phe - 0.25 mM; every 3 min for 30 min). Ninety minutes after these procedures, the animals were perfused with PBS 0.1 M and 0.1 M PFA 4%. The brains were sectioned in slices of 35μm and submitted to the protocol of immunohistochemistry for c-fos. The sections were fixed on slides, and images acquired on Leica DM5000 microscope and analyzed using the software Leica Q Win. Results were expressed as mean  standard error of mean. The data were subjected to the student t test or ANOVA "one way" for repeated measures with post-Neuman-Keuls test. Although not change the baseline MAP (MN: 105  5 vs. C: 115  3 mmHg) and baroreflex gain (MN: -1.5  0.2 vs. C: -2.2  0.5 bpm / mmHg), malnutrition increases the baseline FC (MN: 484  28 vs. C: 381  17 bpm, P <0.05), and expression of c-fos in RVMM, more precisely in the raphe obscurus (Rob) after infusion with Phe (MN: 81  18 vs.. C: 29  5, P <0.05). It was also observed increased expression of c-fos after intermittent baroreflex stimulation in PVH medial NTS and CVLM regardless of dietary protocol used. The data also revealed a differentiated neuronal recruitment in response to stimulation of the baroreflex in the caudal commissural (Sal: 55  5 vs. Phe: 162  20, P <0.05) and rostral NTS (Sal: 79  12 vs. Phe: 205  30, P <0.05), RVLM (Phe: 73  14 vs. Salt: 35  3, P <0.05) and RVMM in malnourished animals. We conclude that protein malnutrition modifies the cardiovascular control and the pattern of central response to baroreflex stimulation.

▼ Companies working in the health area are facing countless economic and financial difficulties, mainly during the last decade, generating studies concerning the cost management. Health companies generate high technological products and services. The focus, based on the cost management for these companies is relevant and a fundamental tool for the decision centers (managers and directors) because they must cope with planning necessities as well as performing and execution evaluation, to achieve sustainable results. This work was focused on cost management, verifying its applicability in a Medical Diagnostic Center. The methodology is based on a case study, containing documental and in-depth analysis of a company in the health area, where the evolutionary cycle of the organization and its systems was studied and a model for management and cost determination, as well as results and performance for business unities was done. These elements allow serving, at the same time, both the decision making by managers and senior management, giving support and evaluating their business strategies.

▼ The traditional ways of conceiving knowledge are reinvigorating the discussion on interdisciplinary curriculum and active methods in teaching and learning. Digital technologies are highlighted in this context, expanding around the virtual culture. The objective of this research was to investigate how teachers in a university in the state of S??o Paulo are using digital media in their classes. For this purpose, we performed an exploratory and qualitative research. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. It was found that new technologies are present in the classroom, however, have not provided major advances to traditional teaching methods, because, as a tool for pedagogical mediation, are still not sufficiently assimilated by teachers. Digital technologies have not yet optimized the process of teaching and learning, effectively approaching the student and teaching contents. The acquisition and manipulation of information through new technologies alone are not sufficient, as technique by technique does not ensure the optimization of the process of knowledge construction by students. The intervention by the educator is crucial in view of creating a link between the life experiences of students and academic content. For the integration of new technologies in teaching practice is effective and consistent with the current curriculum guidelines, it is necessary a policy of continuous training in order to provide not only a technical mastery of each technology or software and its capabilities, but also a pedagogical mastery and how these tools can be used in the classroom to create conditions of its effective use in the higher education institutions. These organizational and operational conditions involve both logistics (equipment, maintenance, space, condition of access by teachers and students) as formative processes of educators to guide their use and help detecting problems and opportunities for innovation. It follows therefore that the gains in student learning are related to familiarity with digital technologies and the trust regarding their use in the classroom. Regardless to the generation that the teacher belongs and the technological context in which he lived, he is able to learn and deal with the new, being enough that he is open to learning and find in the higher education institutions support to their experiences and the opportunity to develop their skills in the use of new technologies.

Two, three and four bioenergetic parameter models can be used to prescribe the critical velocity (VC). The four-parameter model best describes the relationship between velocity (v) and time to exhaustion (tlim) in swimmers. The aim of this study was to determine the metabolic responses when swimming in intensity equivalent to VC4par until exhaustion and verify the validity of predicting it only through a test on 400 m front crawl (T400). To this end, this research was conducted in two stages: stage one, eight male swimmers and four female swimmers ranked among the top eight in their events at the last Brazilian Youth Swimming Championship (15.6 ± 0.9 years, 63.0 ± 7,2 kg, 174.9 ± 8.3 cm in height, 180.7 ± 10.4 cm of arm span, 280.2 ± 17.6 s in the 400 m freestyle = 78.7 ± 3.3% of world record short course) conducted maximum efforts of 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 m in randomized order and with 24 hours of interval for calculating the VC4par. In the second stage, oxygen consumption (VO2), blood lactate…

▼ It generally accepted that soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. Thanks to technology development, a progressively increasing in studies about external load monitoring in soccer match and training were published. Currently, several are the systems available to simultaneously analyze movement patterns of many players during a soccer match, including video-based time motion analysis equipment and global positioning system (GPS) devices. However, the use of one of the first two methods depends on various factors linked to the strengths and weaknesses of each methodologies. As far as concern GPS technology, it has been demonstrated that GPS devices are reliable instruments for monitoring the true metabolic demands during intermittent or high-intensity exercises such as soccer activities. However, there are several concerns about the use of GPS device to assess the very high-speed bouts, short sprints and/or movements with many changes of direction, even more when the sample rate of the GPS device is low. Different studies have shown that reliability of GPS devices gradually decreases in relation to increasing number of changes of directions and accelerations and to reducing running distance. Thus, first aim of this thesis was to investigate the validity and accuracy of GPS technology with a sampling rate ≧10Hz in order to evaluate if it could produce better information on brief activities speed during short shuttle runs.
Supporting by GPS technology, categories of movement described in relation to speed, acceleration or power thresholds, difference between playing position, analysis of fatigue during the match and physical demand in different soccer population (i.e adult versus young) have been analyzed during the training or game by researchers to better understand the workload imposed. Results obtained, in adult male players during a soccer match, identified in the high-intensity distance covered an important indicators of match physical performance. Instead, in youth players most information is available for players between 12 and 17 yr of age but, for very young players (<11 yr of age), data describing the activity profile during match play are limited and thus a less clear picture of the movement demands of these developing players is evident.
Contrarily, information on match analysis about women’s soccer is relatively few and more confused if compared to those of men. Indeed, so far, there is not universally agreement upon standard velocity thresholds utilized to quantify the distances covered in different locomotor activities, especially for high-speed running and sprinting. However, just recently some studies have presented common recommendation that are now being adopted.
Finally, it has been demonstrated that GPS technology could help to better evaluate the workload imposed by specific soccer training. In the last years, the methodology in soccer is changing and it became more difficult to check and program training in order to prevent injury. Not enough time is spent on physical…

m as entrevistas concedidas a vá

O presente estudo teve como principais objetivos: (i) avaliar as características
rios
intermitentes localizados em florestas de eucalipto, pinheiro e caducas nativas;
peixe-zebra (Danio rerio), rã-verde (Pelophylax perezi) e rã-de-unhasafricana
(CAT), glutationa S-transferase (GST) e colinesterase (ChE).
As
do X. laevis.

The use of methodological strategies as a tool to give meaning to the contents of Chemistry has been considered a useful and elementary resource. Among them, experimentation based on research has been highlighted since it allows students to be protagonists of their learning. Such methodologies play a motivating role in the teaching-learning process, promoting more meaningful learning. Thus, the present work aims to analyze the use of experimentation as a methodological strategy in the teaching of Chemistry in High School. In order to do that, a pedagogical intervention was carried out with the execution of two experiments, with different degrees of freedom, one of them based on the SEIs proposed by Carvalho (2013). Data were collected through questionnaires, participatory observation, with the aid of video and audio recordings, and textual production by students, which were analyzed using the Discursive Textual Analysis (ATD) technique. The analysis was divided into two categories: the interview with the teacher; and what students think and do about experimentation. From the data of this, we came to conclusion that the stimulation by the use of the laboratory served as an efficient teaching technique, which must be constantly maintained so that it can provide the student with a meaningful understanding, and also offer means that are able with relate concepts seen in the classroom with your daily life.

▼ The honeybee, Apis mellifera, is an established model for the study of olfactory processing, olfactory learning and memory, and the related plasticity. The primary centre for olfactory processing in the bee brain, the antennal lobe, has a very important function in odour coding and odour discrimination. Nevertheless, both its structure and its function are plastic. In this thesis, I analysed the structural antennal lobe plasticity related to associative learning, and that related to a non-associative experience, i.e. prolonged odour exposure, in the adult honeybee. Subsequently, I analysed the functional modification taking place in the latter case within the output units of the antennal lobe, showing that parallel structural and functional changes occur. In the last part of the thesis, I focused on the effects of a common neonicotinoid pesticide, imidacloprid, on antennal lobe function and the discrimination abilities of honeybees. I demonstrated that both are strongly impaired in the acute treatment of the brain with such substance.

▼ Successfully acting largely depends on moving at the right time. Consider a member of an orchestra just few instants before starting to play her piece. She should be ready not only to launch the planned movements when appropriate, but also to stop them if required. Action initiation and control are characteristic features of many of our daily life actions. There is a large amount of evidence in monkeys and humans suggesting that the dorsal premotor cortex (PMD) and the supplementary motor areas (SMA) might be critically involved in these features. However, the distinctive role of these areas is still matter of controversy. The aim of the present thesis is to provide some preliminary steps toward a comprehension of whether and how the human dorsal precentral areas may selectively contribute to action initiation and control. In doing this we shall introduce and discuss a series of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) experiments carried out with two different paradigms, namely dual-coil TMS and single pulse TMS paradigm. These experiments were primarily devoted to explore the structural and functional properties of PMD. They also allowed us to assess whether PMD and SMA may be differentially and selectively involved in action control. In more detail, we first investigated the structural connectivity between PMD and the ipsilateral orofacial M1, introducing a novel dual-coil TMS approach. Results displayed the existence of short-latency influences of the left PMD on the ipsilateral orofacial M1, measured by recording motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in the orofacial muscles. Then, taking advantage of this novel approach, we started to explore the functional PMD-M1 connectivity. We tested the short-latency effects of TMS, as measured by changes in orofacial MEPs, during a delayed motor task. The results showed an inhibitory activity in the PMD-M1 module during the SET-period. We also manipulated the duration of the SET-period, to establish whether the effects were time-locked to the start of the delay period or rather time-locked to the predicted GO-signal. Hence, the investigation of the PMD-M1 connectivity paved us the way to explore, first, the role of PMD in initiating action and, then, the differential role of PMD and SMA in controlling and inhibiting action. Indeed, we run a further study, in which we carried out two single pulse TMS experiments. We first stimulated PMD during a stop-signal task, then we contrasted the PMD stimulation with SMA stimulation when participants underwent the same stop-signal task. There are five chapters to come. In Chapter 1 we shall review some key studies exploring anatomical and functional properties of PMD and SMA in both monkeys and humans, with particular emphasis on their putative role in action initiation and control. In Chapter 2 we shall focus on the methodological aspects of our experimental studies. In particular, we shall introduce the so-called twin- or dual-coil TMS paradigm, discuss its main approaches present in the literature and propose a variant of them. In Chapter…

▼ My PhD research consists of the processing of signals from a 14-electrode EEG system, connected to immersive glasses that allow for a realistic visual experience and for the investigation of the brain network in order to identify signal features corresponding to different perceptive and cognitive stimuli.
The aim of the research is to implement a procedure that identifies correspondences among EEG signals and chaotic attractors.
The chaotic attractors can be defined as a trajectory of a dynamical system, contained in a defined volume of phase space. A dynamical system can have chaotic behavior, i.e. an organized (but not periodic) behavior sensitive to the initial conditions. EEG signals can be considered dynamical systems.
In this work a custom Artificial Neural Network (ITSOM) processes individual signals or many signals simultaneously.
The sequence of the ITSOM winning nodes tends to repeat itself creating a time series of chaotic attractors.
The ITSOM attributes similar codes to attractors emerging from similar brain states, perceptions and emotions.
These attractors are isomorphic to the attractors in which the corresponding dynamical system (the signal time series) is evolving and univocally characterize the input element that produces them.
If the attractors are chaotic, this means that the signals are individually self-organized or, by examining more signals together, there is a form of coherence among signals.
The ITSOM network memorizes the time series of the winning nodes.
The cumulative scores for each input are normalized following the z standardized variable distribution.
Attractors are labeled with a binary code that univocally identifies them, and the flexibility of the Artificial Neural Network allows attributing the same codes to similar dynamical events.
During the experiment, the
subject is looking at the screen while different shades of colors, yellow, red and blue are displayed. Each stimulation lasts five seconds, between stimuli there is a black screen, used to reset the previous color stimuli.
The collected results show, as forecast, many correspondences among binary codes coming from similar stimuli. The thesis provides a detailed description of these results.

▼ The human locomotion has been constantly analysed from both bioenergetics and biomechanical point of views (Saibene & Minetti, 2003; Cavagna, 2010). Since earliest times, hunting for food and escaping from predators already has proven how important is to comprehend this complex engineering that is our locomotor machine.
Gradient locomotion has been investigated in the past, and the concept of the optimum gradient for walking, running and mountain paths are well known in the literature. The existence of an optimum gradient is based on the different partitioning between positive and negative mechanical work (that mirrors concentric and eccentric muscular activity) and the related metabolic demand. In the literature, the ratio between negative and positive work efficiency during unloaded locomotion was found to be 5/1. The purpose of this new study is to analyse the mechanical, metabolic and electromyography parameters during gradient loaded walking in order to understand how an extra-load can affect locomotion and especially the efficiency of positive and negative work.
Still, another important topic referred to the human locomotion physiology is about the cardiovascular system. Related to this, oxygen uptake (V'O2) refers to the product of cardiac output and the volume of oxygen extracted from the blood, and its maximal value (V'O2peak) strengthen the maximal capacity of the cardiovascular system to provide O2 to muscle cells during continued exercise, being the most widely used measure of physical fitness (Plasqui & Westerterp, 2005; Koeneman et al., 2011). Although there is a large genetic component, it is mainly determined by a person’s activity level, and inversely related to several health outcomes such as cardiovascular disease (Daanen et al., 2012).
Besides of heart rate (HR) control and its relationship with V'O2, the HR recovery (off transient, after exercise) has received more attention by current researchers (Myers et al., 2007; Dupuy et al., 2012; Haddad et al., 2012). The rate of decline in HR following termination of exercise, which is regulated by the autonomic nervous system and thereby, provides information concerning sympathetic and parasympathetic activity (Daanen et al., 2012). In general, the more rapid the HR recovery, the better the fitness (Daanen et al., 2012; Buchheit, 2014).
While exercise-training studies usually report HR values at a given time during the recovery period (Daanen et al., 2012), in most clinical studies, HR recovery is defined as the difference between HR at the end of exercise and HR at a given time during the recovery period (Otsuki et al., 2007; Dupuy et al., 2012). Moreover, in some studies a mono-exponential model fit the HR off-kinetics to derive global parameters of HR recovery kinetics such as the time constant or the asymptotic value (Stanley et al., 2013; Peinado et al., 2014).
Based on these results and the growing interest in new smart devices for health monitoring, here we aimed to estimate V'O2peak from a short test (60
m) with variables that can be…

▼ Aim: The velocity associated with maximum aerobic power (vVO2max) and lactate threshold (LaT) are important physiological parameters, which are utilized to determine relative workloads on the field. The testing modality adopted to evaluate it, though, may cause differences in vVO2max and LaT assessment and, in turn, in training intensity. Long distance runners (RUN) and soccer players (SOC) are both athletes involved with running. However, the physiological demands are different: in RUN are continuous while in SOC are discontinuous, with an alternation of aerobic and anaerobic tasks. Therefore, the aim of the studies was to compare two different testing modalities (continuous incremental ramp and discontinuous square wave (SW) protocols) for vVO2max assessment on the treadmill in physically active male, RUN and SOC. Hypothesis is that due to the faster increase in running velocity with time, vVO2max would be higher in the continuous incremental ramp tests compared to SW and this difference should be higher in SOC than in RUN, due to a different capacity to adjust the oxygen transport system at each workload. Moreover, we studied how the slope of the increase in running velocity with time (ramp slope) during continuous incremental ramp protocol, though, may affect LaT assessment measured with different methods.
Methods: Seventeen physically active participants, eight RUN and nine SOC performed three maximum incremental tests on a treadmill: two continuous ramp protocols, with different ramp slopes (R1, 1 km·h-1 per min; and R2, 1 km·h-1 every 2 min), and one discontinuous SW protocol, in random order, for maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and vVO2max determination. Cardiorespiratory and metabolic parameters were collected breath-by-breath at rest and during exercise. Blood lactate concentration [La-]b was measured at rest, during, and at peak exercise. In both protocols, LaT was calculated by DMAX, DMAX MOD, 4 mM, Δ1 mM and Log-Log methods.
Results: vVO2max was significantly higher in R1 and R2 compared to SW (16.8±0.6, 20.7±0.5, 18.6±0.4 km·h-1 for SW, R1, R2, respectively; P<0.001). No significant differences were found among protocols for VO2max (4018±111, 4039±110, 4003±100 ml·min-1 for SW, R1, R2, respectively) as well as for expiratory ventilation, carbon dioxide production, blood lactate concentration, and heart rate. In the second study, no significant differences between groups and protocols were found in VO2max as well as in VE, VCO2, [La-]peak and HR at maximum exercise. However, vVO2max was significantly higher in R1 and R2 compared to SW in SOC, while only R1 was significantly higher than SW in RUN. A higher difference between R1 vs SW and in R2 vs SW was found in SOC than RUN for both ramps (+29% and 16% vs SW for R1 and R2 in SOC and +16% and 6% vs SW for R1 and R2 in RUN). Moreover, LaT had higher velocities in R1 for DMAX (16.5±0.4 vs 15.1±0.4 km⋅h-1, P=0.002), DMAX MOD (17.7±0.5 vs 15.6±0.4 km⋅h-1, P<0.001), 4 mM (17.0±0.6 vs 15.5±0.5 km⋅h-1, P<0.001), Δ1 mM (17.1±0.5 vs 15.1±0.4 km⋅h-1, P<0.001), but…

▼ The Ziziphus joazeiro Mart. is an endemic species from the caatinga which belongs to the Rhamnaceae family. Among the Brazilian species of the blind, it is the most known for its economical and medicinal potential, especially in the semi-arid regions of the Brazilian Northeast, where there is enormous distribution in all the states of the this region. Although it produces big quantities of the feasible seeds every year, it is known a little by its germinative process and its seeds behaviour during the storage. The aims of this work consists of determining the morphological characteristics of the fruit and seeds and chemical characteristics of the fruit; defining a simple and efficient methodology to accelerate and uniform the germination; testing different ways of storage, aiming to establish criterions to keep the germinative power of the seeds for a long time and identify the substrate which fits better to the development of the seedling. To the morphological characterization were determinated the length, width, weight and the external and internal morphology of the fruit, pits and seeds. It was still analized the kind of the germination and the external morphology of the seedling. The initial viability of the seeds was calculated through the tetrazolium test. For the germination and the storage test, the experiments es the seeds, making a barrier to the development of the seedling. The chemical scarification with sulfhuric acid for 20 and 30 minutes showed itself efficient to shorten and uniform the germination, due to the wear that happened in the endocarp, becoming it more permeable by water and becoming easier the development of the radicle. The mechanic scarification with sandpaper showed efficient as well, speaking about reducing the necessary time to finish the germinative process, this result comes from the overcoming of the endocarp hardness created by the scarification. Although the application of the Gibberellic acid hadnât helped to the increasing of the germination porcentage and Speed Germination index, the usage of that purposed the increasing of the seedling vigor since we could see the increasing of the aerial part and the length of roots. The work of the storage showed that the germination capacity of the species wasnât affected by the time. Considering the different blinds of the storage, it noted that the storage in natural conditions and in silica-gel were more efficient to accelerate the germination. The analysis of the substrates showed that the mixture â vegetal soil + vermiculite showed itself more efficient in all the ways tested when compared with the other treatments.

The present work focused on neurophysiological and behavioral mechanisms related to healthy and pathological aging. The first study explored the behavioral and electrophysiological dynamics (N2pc and CDA) of multiple object processing in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients to identify neurophysiological markers able to differentiate normal from pathological aging. Data suggested that CDA may be a useful neural signature to both distinguish between healthy and pathological aging and characterize the different stages along the AD continuum, possibly becoming a reliable candidate for an early diagnostic biomarker of AD pathology. The second study evaluated the possibility to apply a non-invasive neurorehabilitation protocol, by means of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), to improve cognitive performance by increasing the level of arousal. Both the behavioral performance to a short term memory task and indexes of autonomic physiological activation (pupillary dilatation and skin conductance) were investigated…

▼ According to the American Heart Association and the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease is the primary cause of death. Interestingly, the female incidence of mortality due to cardiovascular events has clearly exceeded that of male since 1984. Physical exercise is the most important non-pharmacological treatment leading to several cardiovascular protective effects via a direct impact on the vasculature and on the autonomic response. In the modern society, not everyone could practice physical activity on a daily basis, because of several limitations or more simply, particular diseases in which the traditional physical exercise approach results unfeasible.
Exercise-related improvements in vascular functionality are primarily attributed as shear stress- dependent mechanism.Respiratory muscles being part of the musculoskeletal system can be trained. Because of this, it is possible that respiratory muscle training (RMT) could be used as an alternative exercise paradigm causing alteration in the peripheral hemodynamic, including no exercising areas, to improve vascular health. Previous evidences proved that RMT has a primary positive effect in static and dynamic lung volumes, together with maximal inspiratory pressure, and a secondary important effect in increase cardiac vagal tone, lastly affecting the autonomic nervous system balance. To date, the effects of RMT on the overall vasomotor response (a well-recognized marker of cardiovascular health) has not been investigated yet.
Another small muscle exercise modality is the dynamic knee extension. The ability of the vessels to alter their diameter (i.e. vasodilation or vasoconstriction) to maintain the homeostasis of the vascular tone, ensuring that the blood flow matches the demand of the skeletal muscles and other organs, both at rest and during exercise is defined vasomotor response. Extrinsic factor, such as the autonomic control of the sympathetic neural drive (global control), and intrinsic factor such as the capacity of the endothelial cells to respond to mechanical stress by releasing vasoactive molecules (i.e. nitric oxide, NO) together with other possible factors, such as pH and temperature, interact to determines the prevalence of a vasoconstriction or vasodilator effect on the arterial wall.
Thus, the aim of this dissertation was to evaluate the effects of two different types of small muscle exercise training on the peripheral vasomotor response in young healthy people. Two studies were developed in which the purposes were:
1) to evaluate the effects of eight weeks of RMT on both central (i.e. the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic neural system assessed by heart rate variability) and peripheral (i.e. the ability of the endothelium to release NO causing vasodilatation assessed by Flow Mediated Dilatation(FMD) components of vasomotor response, in young healthy females;
2) to evaluate the effects of single-leg knee extension training (KE) on vasomotor response in the lower limb directly involved with exercise (i.e. femoral artery)…
