▼ In Markov chain models in finance and healthcare a transition matrix over a certain time interval is needed but only a transition matrix over a longer time interval may be available. The problem arises of determining a stochastic pth root of astochastic matrix (the given transition matrix). By exploiting the theory of functions of matrices, we develop results on the existence and characterization of stochastic pth roots. Our contributions include characterization of when a real matrix hasa real pth root, a classification of pth roots of a possibly singular matrix,a sufficient condition for a pth root of a stochastic matrix to have unit row sums,and the identification of two classes of stochastic matrices that have stochastic pth roots for all p. We also delineate a wide variety of possible configurationsas regards existence, nature (primary or nonprimary), and number of stochastic roots,and develop a necessary condition for existence of a stochastic root in terms of the spectrum of the given matrix. On the computational side, we emphasize finding an approximate stochastic root: perturb the principal root A^1/p or the principal logarithm log(A) to the nearest stochastic matrix or the nearest intensity matrix, respectively, if they are not valid ones;minimize the residual \normF{X^p-A} over all stochastic matrices X and also over stochastic matrices that are primary functions of A. For the first two nearness problems, the global minimizers are found in the Frobenius norm. For the last two nonlinear programming problems, we derive explicit formulae for the gradient and Hessian of the objective function \normF{X^p-A}² and investigate Newton's method, a spectral projected gradient method (SPGM) and the sequential quadratic programming method to solve the problem as well as various matrices to start the iteration. Numerical experiments show that SPGM starting with the perturbed A^1/pto minimize \normF{X^p-A} over all stochastic matrices is method of choice.Finally, a new algorithm is developed for computing arbitrary real powers A^\a of a matrix A∈ℂ^{n × n}. The algorithm starts with a Schur decomposition,takes k square roots of the triangular factor T, evaluates an [m/m] Pad\'e approximant of (1-x)^\a at I - T^{1/2^k}, and squares the result k times. The parameters k and m are chosen to minimize the cost subject to achieving double precision accuracy in the evaluation of the Pad\'e approximant, making use of a result that bounds the error in the matrix Pad\'e approximant by the error in the scalar Pad\'e approximant with argument the norm of the matrix. The Pad\'e approximant is evaluated from the continued fraction representation in bottom-up fashion, which is shown to be numerically stable. In the squaring phase the diagonal and first superdiagonal are computed from explicit formulae for T^{\a/2^j}, yielding increased accuracy. ▼ Recent efforts to classify off-shell representations of supersymmetry without a central charge have focused upon directed, supermultiplet graphs of hypercubic topology known as Adinkras. These encodings of Super Poincare algebras, depict every generator of a chosen supersymmetry as a node-pair transformtion between fermionic bosonic component fields. This research thesis is a culmination of investigating novel diagrammatic sums of gauge-quotients by supersymmetric images of other Adinkras, and the correlated building of field theoretic worldline Lagrangians to accommodate both classical and quantum venues. We find Ref [40], that such gauge quotients do not yield other stand alone or "proper" Adinkras as afore sighted, nor can they be decomposed into supermultiplet sums, but are rather a connected "Adinkraic network". Their iteration, analogous to Weyl's construction for producing all finite-dimensional unitary representations in Lie algebras, sets off chains of algebraic paradigms in discrete-graph and continuous-field variables, the links of which feature distinct, supersymmetric Lagrangian templates. Collectively, these Adiankraic series air new symbolic genera for equation to phase moments in Feynman path integrals. Guided in this light, we proceed by constructing Lagrangians actions for the N = 3 supermultiplet YI /(iDI X) for I = 1, 2, 3, where YI and X are standard, Salam-Strathdee superfields: YI fermionic and X bosonic. The system, bilinear in the component fields exhibits a total of thirteen free parameters, seven of which specify Zeeman-like coupling to external background (magnetic) fluxes. All but special subsets of this parameter space describe aperiodic oscillatory responses, some of which are found to be surprisingly controlled by the golden ratio, [phi] = 1.61803, Ref [52]. It is further determined that these Lagrangians allow an N = 3 -> 4 supersymmetric extension to the Chiral-Chiral and Chiral-twistedChiral multiplet, while a subset admits two inequivalent such extensions. In a natural proiii gression, a continuum of observably and usefully inequivalent, finite-dimensional off-shell representations of worldline N = 4 extended supersymmetry are explored, that are variate from one another but in the value of a tuning parameter, Ref [53]. Their dynamics turns out to be nontrivial already when restricting to just bilinear Lagrangians. In particular, we find a 34-parameter family of bilinear Lagrangians that couple two differently tuned supermultiplets to each other and to external magnetic fluxes, where the explicit parameter dependence is unremovable by any field redefinition and is therefore observable. This offers the evaluation of X-phase sensitive, off-shell path integrals with promising correlations to group product decompositions and to deriving source emergences of higher-order background flux-forms on 2-dimensional manifolds, the stacks of which comprise space-time volumes. Application to nonlinear sigma models would naturally follow, having potential use in M- and F- string theories. Advisors/Committee Members: Klemm, Richard.

▼ In the 1st chapter we look at a set ΩN , that consists of N objects with the same choice probability, respectively. We investigate a real feature X , which provides N values, within m pairwise distinct values; λN is the maximum of the absolute frequencies of the m values. We draw a random sample out of ΩN of size n without replacement. Theorem I.1 provides a bound B(n, N, λN / N ) ; this bound estimates the Euclidean distance between the joint probability functions of the sample variates at n-fold drawing with andm without replacement out of ΩN to the top. A pre-version of this estimation we've proposed at the International Congress of the Deutsche Statistische Gesellschaft in 2000 already. The estimation may be used for every scaling of X and for varying m = m (N) . The estimation is sharp, since for the class of those X that are mapping ΩN bijectively (m=N) , the equation sign is true - in this case the Euclidean distance of the joint probability functions (see above) is even the Euclidean distance of the choice probabilities of n objects between drawing with and without replacement out of ΩN. Corollaries from the estimation are formulations of two limit theorems: (i) Uniform convergence of the Euclidean distance of the joint probability functions (see above) against zero with increasing N , permitting varying m = m (N). (ii) Uniform convergence of the Euclidean distance between the probability functions of the m-dimensional Hypergeometric distribution and the m-variate Multinomialdistribution against zero with increasing N , permitting varying m = m (N). The convergence order of both limits is O(1/N) at least. In comparison with related results by Feller (1950 and later) and Johnson/Kotz/Balakrishnan (1997) we obtain better and more generalized statements. In the 2nd chapter we estimate the max. relative frequency (λN /N) under some conditions, that enable us to use the Kolmogorov / Smirnov - distance IDN , IDN := supt | IFN ( t ) - F ( t ) | with the empirical distribution function IFN and her almost sure limit function F . Applying the DKW-inequality or the Smirnov-LIL to the estimation of IDN , we get some different versions of the estimation of (λN /N). We show that, under some conditions, (λN /N) tends to the maximally jump of F. In the 3rd chapter we are concerned with a fundamental requirement of the Bootstrap limit theorem of Strobl (1995): The integral representation of a particular Frechet differential. The concept of a decomposition of the measure space \W allows us to give the conditions, under which this requirement is filled, for a norm in \W indexed by a special function space.
