La domanda alla base di questa tesi è semplice: quale tipologia di relazione ci potrebbe essere tra scienza e filosofia in pedagogia dopo le recenti scoperte delle neuroscienze? C’è una contrapposizione o una integrazione reciproca? La tradizionale contrapposizione storica è confermata o si può parlare di complementarità reciproca? Con l’obiettivo di mostrare l’interdipendenza reciproca tra questi campi del sapere, attraverso il metodo fenomenologico, la sezione α fa un’analisi teoretica di alcune teorie estratte dalle ricerche di Antonio Damasio. La sezione β esamina gli stessi problemi ma attraverso la fenomenologia di Merleau-Ponty, introducendo alcuni concetti: la “carne” (chair), il “chiasma” e la “reversibilità”, concetti chiave per poter pensare la relazione tra gli le cose, gli enti, le discipline e la pedagogia. I risultati mostrano che non si tratta di sacrificare la pedagogia alla scienza o alla filosofia, né di sacrificare la scienze e la filosofia alla pedagogia, perché questi campi del sapere sono ontologicamente legati tra loro. I risultati aprono a nuove prospettive di ricerca: quali sono le conseguenze di una relazione in chiasma in pedagogia? Possiamo estendere questa particolare relazione alle altre discipline?

The question at the basis of this thesis is simple: which typology of relationship there may be between science and philosophy in education after the most recently neuroscience discoveries? Is there contradiction or an integration? Is the historical and traditional opposition confirmed or we could talk about a possible integration? In order to show the reciprocal interdependence between these fields, using a phenomenological method, the α section does a theoretic analysis of some assertions taken from Antonio Damasio’s researches. The β section looks trough the Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology the same problems and introduces some concepts: the “flesh” (chair), the “chiasma” and “reversibility”, central ideas in order to think the relationship between things, beings, disciplines and education. Results show that it is neither a question of sacrificing education to science and philosophy, nor philosophy and science to education, since these fields are ontologically bound together. In conclusion results open further new questions: what are the consequences of “chiasma” relationship in education? Could we extend this particular relationship to other disciplines?

Il corpo è lo schermo. La filosofia del visuale di Merleau-Ponty Per Merleau-Ponty, l’esigenza di ripensare la razionalità contemporanea al di là del dualismo di soggetto-oggetto implica e si intreccia con la questione dello sguardo, inteso non come punto in cui si origina una visione del mondo, ma come evento nel quale il soggetto e il mondo si generano in un movimento reciproco di co-naissance. Il visibile, e, più specificamente, quel tipo particolare di visibile che è l’immagine, è pensato come uno snodo decisivo, come punto in cui ne va della razionalità e dell’Essere, ed è compreso nella sua storicità propria, in virtù della sua apparizione fenomenica e situata, ma anche in quanto esso costitutivamente implica un risvolto di invisibile o orizzonte di latenza. Il vedere è così situato da Merleau-Ponty in quel corpo i cui occhi vedono ed il rapporto tra corpo e immagine è compreso nella sua trama storica e processuale, che si allarga fino ad includere le mutazioni antropologiche ed epistemiche che possiamo ritrovare all’opera nel nostro rapporto percettivo con il mondo e che in particolar modo si trovano inscritte nel fenomeno dell’espressione artistica. Considerando il soggetto come vedente che non si trova semplicemente nel visibile ma, che ne è, il filosofo viene così a delineare una reversibilità della visione ed una co-implicazione di senso e sensibile, le cui conseguenze teoriche toccano in modo pregnante la nostra comprensione dell’universo visuale e del regime scopico contemporaneo, trovandosi in una significativa convergenza con le istanze proprie della svolta iconica che ha investito gli studi sull’immagine, tanto in ambito anglosassone quanto nel contesto europeo. A partire da alcuni nodi decisivi – tra cui immagine, medium, tecnica, opera d’arte, aptico – ed in particolare attraverso il riferimento al cinema e alla nozione di “schermo”, il presente lavoro si propone di caratterizzare il pensiero merleau-pontiano del visuale, da un lato, nel tentativo di ricostruirne la traiettoria rispetto alle fonti ed alle diverse fasi della sua riflessione filosofica, dall’altro, con l’intento di individuare l’impatto generato dal pensiero di Merleau-Ponty in altri campi disciplinari, al fine di metterne così in rilievo l’interesse per una riflessione che si rivolga all’immagine ed al visuale oggi.

3. Urban, William John. Sexuated Topology and the Suspension of Meaning: A Non-Hermeneutical Phenomenological Approach to Textual Analysis.

This study assumes the subject's pursuit of meaning is generally incapacitating and should be suspended. It aims to demonstrate how such a suspension is theoretically accomplished by utilizing Lacan's formulae of sexuation integrated with his work in discourse theory and topology. Part I places this study into context by examining scholarship from the established fields of hermeneutics, phenomenology, (post)structuralism, aesthetic theory and psychoanalysis in order to extract out their respective theory of meaning. These theories reveal that an historical struggle with meaning has been underway since the Reformation and reaches near crisis proportions in the 20th century. On the one hand this crisis is mollified by the rise of Heideggerian-Gadamerian hermeneutical phenomenology which questions traditional epistemological approaches to the text using a new ontological conceptualization of meaning and a conscious rejection of methodology. On the other hand this crisis is exacerbated when the ubiquitous nature of meaning is itself challenged by (post)structuralism's discovery of the signifier which inscribes a limit to meaning, and by the domains of sense and nonsense newly opened up by aesthetic theory. These historical developments culminate in the field of psychoanalysis which most consequentially delimits a cause of meaning said to be closely linked to the core of subjectivity. Part II extends these findings by rigorously constructing out of the Lacanian sexuated formulae a decidedly non-hermeneutical phenomenological approach useful in demonstrating the sexual nature of meaning. Explicated in their static state by way of an account of their original derivation from the Aristotelian logical square, it is argued that these four formulae are relevant to basic concerns of textual theory inclusive of the hermeneutical circle of meaning. These formulae are then set into motion by integrating them with Lacan's four discourses to demonstrate the breakdown of meaning. Finally, the cuts and sutures of two-dimensional space that is topology as set down in L'étourdit are performed to confirm how the very field of meaning is ultimately suspended from a nonsensical singular point known in Lacanian psychoanalysis as objet a. The contention is that by occupying this point the subject frees himself from the debilitating grip of meaning. Advisors/Committee Members: Bailey, Steven (advisor).
