home environment. This system isdesigned for rehabilitation of the
impaired upper limb of stroke survivors. AMicrosoft Kinect was used
to track the position of the patient’s hand and thegame requires
the user to move the arm over increasing large areas by slidingthe
arm on a support.Studies were performed with six stroke survivors

▼ It should not be puzzling to have 55% of the condominium house lottery winners did not show up interest to sign and receive ‘their’ houses, which is claimed to be
low cost and affordable to lower and middle class society, this figure will be larger in country side towns. This still tells us the claiming
low cost houses are still far beyond the affordable limit of the target group. In this study an endeavor is made to investigate structurally safe and economical forms of precast beam. Hence a new plane truss forms of precast beam is investigated and compared to the practicing space truss form of precast beam. The new model, though it has relatively shorter length of span for the similar sizes of bar, it is found reducing the
cost by around 25% and mass (weight) of the beam by 33% for relatively similar span lengths.

This work has as main objective to verify the financial viability of an EasyHotel in London, to characterize the low-cost philosophy to a hotel business, contributing to acomprehensive study of the hospitality industry in London for a mediate and immediatesurroundings, creating a document presentable to future partners and ultimately create atool that allows you to get financial data by changing the key indicators, including sizingand pricing. This tool is held in Excel, being part of this thesis.
The EasyHotel is a member company EasyJet currently has no activity in Lisbon, which allows the creation of a franchise in this geographical area. So, I considered this a business opportunity, hence the development of a business plan. .
Methodologically, we stress the importance of the study the demand and supply, which allows the outset, creating an enthusiasm for this sector. Among other things, it is noted that in London the hotel sector's income amounted to EUR 420 million as it offered more than 6 million overnight stays.
Another phenomenon that standsvout was the "dynamic packaging",vit is the conjunctionof several electronic tourism products from different suppliers in the U.S., where there are studies, this phenomenon represents 20% of sales from tourism is expected that not different in Europe, that to say that their sales…

▼ The
low-income housing situation in Bangkok, Thailand, is similar to that faced in many developing cities throughout the world. The housing opportunities afforded to residents classed as
low-income dwellers, are minimal, unsuitable and inconsiderate of their complex social, cultural and spiritual requirements, often leading to the formation of slums, and squatter settlements.
The close proximity of living experienced in informal settlements results in a community-focused style of living, where neighbours rely on each other to survive. This is translated not only into the social fabric of the informal settlement, but also into the architectural style of these vernacular communities. The process of helping construct your neighbour's home, builds social and cultural ties; these traits are often lost when outside parties attempt to ‘improve’ the
low-income living situation.
The idea of housing design as a process not just a product, also referred to as ‘cooked’ architecture, is widely promoted through the writings, research and design methodologies focused towards
low-income housing endeavors (Rapoport, 1988; Sinha, 2012; Yap, 1990). Despite this, effective involvement of residents in developing and building their own homes is something rarely practiced or achieved within architecture, yet the benefits of including residents, who are the focus of a complex social and architectural situation, in the design process seems clear.
There is little question that communities that work through this process become stronger, both socially and economically, however, the quality of housing and architectural output is still at a very
low level, despite obvious improvements from the previous
low-
cost conditions. To address this, an architectural outcome has been developed utilizing a critical design approach. The implementation of ethnographic and participatory design research, as well as multiple design iterations, based on current and traditional modes, has resulted in an architecture that is culturally responsive, impacts the existing context lightly, and primarily provides a positive social scenario to encourage community betterment through collective construction and living.

▼ One of the most challenging and wide-spread global humanitarian issues is an insufficient access to safe drinking water. While the use of geophysics can improve drilling success rates for safe drinking water as well as provide information about aquifer structure, geophysical surveys themselves can be prohibitively expensive. The recent development of
low-
cost computer microcontrollers and the widespread availability of cheap electronics components raise the possibility of developing and using do-it-yourself (DIY)
low-
cost geophysical instrumentation with open-source designs and software solutions to avoid costly geophysical instrumentation. An existing design of a
low-
cost DC resistivity meter system was altered to improve the reliability and operability. A Raspberry Pi-based data-logging system was developed to improve the functionality and usability of the system, as well as the integrity of the acquired data. Numerical modeling and physical tests at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) demonstrate that the system is more robust than previously published
low-
cost designs and works in a diverse range of geological environments. The
low-
cost DC resistivity instrument was used in a Geoscientists Without Borders (GWB) project jointly run between researchers from CSM and Université d'Abomey-Calavi (UAC), Cotonou, Benin. The GWB project involved instructing UAC students in the basics of hydrogeophysical surveying including the use of the DC resistivity method, the construction and validation of two
low-
cost DC resistivity meters, and the subsequent use of the instruments in fieldwork aimed at better characterizing a local aquifer used as a potable groundwater source for communities in the Cotonou region. The
low-
cost instrument was successfully used alongside a commercial resistivity meter to acquire a dataset imaging a 2D section in the Ouédo pumping field. An analysis of the redesigned instrument shows that the
cost is a fraction of the price of a commercial resistivity meter without a significant impact on data quality. Future design improvements are outlined to expand capabilities for multichannel and time-lapse surveying.

▼ The current study examines the effects of
low-
cost interventions such as prompts, feedback, and the addition of receptacles on littering behavior of cigarette butts in the natural environment. Two receptacles were placed at each experimental hole, one within twenty feet of the tee box, and a second within twenty feet of the edge of the green. Prompts included (1) a reminder of the location of receptacles, (2) a slogan prompting proper disposal of cigarette butts, and (3) one piece of information regarding consequences of cigarette butt litter. Feedback included a barometer specific to each hole indicating the decrease in cigarette butt litter on each individual experimental hole since baseline. An additive component analysis was used to determine effectiveness of each
low-
cost intervention. Results from this study expands the literature on
cost-effective,
low effort, and socially valid interventions tackling litter. In the current study, simply providing receptacles for proper cigarette disposal was deemed the more effective and preferred intervention to decrease cigarette butt litter.

▼ This dissertation examines the consequences of the Korean Airline Deregulation Act of May 2008. I propose an empirical methodology for analyzing demand and supply in differentiated product markets that measures welfare effects due to the entry of
Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) from two perspectives: pre- and post-deregulation. I have built a panel of airline carrier level data for each of the seven domestic non-stop routes from June 2006 to October 2010 to investigate whether the deregulation policy is desirable for increasing the net welfare gains to air passengers, and for promoting competition among airline carriers. Chapter 1 explains the implementation and effects of the Act change on the Korean airline industry. The Act removed restrictions imposed on both aircraft size and aircraft age for the non-scheduled air service carriers so that all LCCs were able to operate jet aircraft which had more than 100 seats per airplane. Since May 2008, the competition, long dominated by two legacy carriers, Korean Air (KAL) and Asiana Air (AAR), has intensified as emerging LCCs have began offering lower air fares. Chapter 2 outlines the empirical framework of the nested logit model and applies it to two categories of city pair routes in Korea: five Jeju island routes and two inland routes. A priori there are expectations of differences in both types of travelers and in alternatives to air transportation, thus differences in air travel demand sensitivity to price and non-price factors, such as frequent flights and aircraft size. In this chapter, I find evidence of a common sensitivity to price across the Jeju island routes and the inland routes and route-specific response to flight characteristics. Thus, I propose a joint constrained model in terms of price sensitivity where the parameter for price variable is constrained to be the same across all seven routes, but the flight characteristics should be permitted to have route-specific effects. Frequent flights, larger aircraft, evenly distributed flight schedules on peak-demand hours (lunchtime for some routes), and shorter airtime duration generate a higher utility for air passengers. Chapter 3 models the supply side and legacy carriers' strategic responses to the emergence of LCCs. The two legacy carriers established their own subsidiary LCCs (dependent LCCs). KAL entered some routes with its subsidiary LCC, JNA, while AAR rebadged to ABL, its subsidiary LCC, replacing their prior service. Chapter 4 integrates the demand- and supply-side in order to derive average price elasticities for air travel demand, implied marginal costs and Lerner indices for each carrier's flights. Price-
cost markups are recovered after the demand parameters are first obtained and then inserted in the pricing equation. The estimated results for a dominant airline carrier on some inland routes are inconsistent with the static profit maximization assumption, having inelastic demand elasticities and negative marginal costs. Chapter 5 contributes to the literature on the spatial competition of the airline…

▼ Welding of aluminum based materials to steel is of
particular interest to the engineers because the resulting products
combine the very different but favourable properties of each
material The resulting products have a desirable combination of
high thermal conductivity and low density of aluminum and low
thermal conductivity and the high tensile strength of steels The
demand for aluminum and aluminum matrix composite steel joints and
has therefore increased in many significant applications including
cryogenics structural engineering marine engineering nuclear
engineering spacecraft rocket fuel tanks and high vacuum chambers
owing to their superior properties In all these critical
applications the strength of the dissimilar joint and joint
interfacial properties are very important Failure in these joints
is a matter of great concern since that would result in massive
losses However welding of dissimilar materials has great
difficulties because of the formation of inter metallic compounds,
presence of oxides at the interfacial region inferior weld strength
at the inner region of the joint interface and more quantity of
material consumption during the joining process

▼ Masters Research - Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
More than 90% of municipal solid waste (MSW) in developing countries is disposed of in landfills. In Bhutan, about 90% of solid waste is disposed of in landfills. One of the significant problems associated with landfills is the generation of leachate. Landfill leachates are highly contaminated waste waters containing high concentrations of organic matter (OM) measured as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, halogenated hydrocarbons and trace elements. The direct release of leachate into the environment may pose potential risks and hazards to public health and ecosystems. As a result, cost effective and environmentally acceptable treatments of leachate are sought. This research aims to examine leachate characteristics and two low cost passive treatment options. The characteristics of a typical leachate generated at a modern sanitary landfill were investigated by analysis of long-term monitoring data collected at Summerhill Waste Management Centre (SWMC), Newcastle, NSW. Leachate production from the SWMC landfill was clearly related to rainfall events at the landfill site. Rainfall has a direct impact on the volume of leachate produced and consequently on its chemical characteristics. Thus, leachate treatment systems must have provisions for the variation in concentrations. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the suitability of two low cost passive leachate treatment options, which are viable and suitable for adoption in Bhutan. Two laboratory bench scale experiments were undertaken. The first experiment involved surface aeration of raw leachate over a period of 20 days, while the second investigated the treatment performance of three low cost filter media (Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), Blast Furnace Slag (BFS) and sand) by examining their sorption efficiencies in a series of column experiments. Leachate samples were collected from the landfill at SWMC. The results of the research showed that a medium strength landfill leachate can be treated by both methods to reduce the concentrations of certain parameters. Aerobic treatment enhanced the leachate quality mainly through removal of ammonia and OM (>95%). It resulted in significant pollutant reductions as opposed to no aeration, which resulted in anoxic conditions. Column experiments provided leachate treatment essentially by lowering soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration. BFS and GAC have performed comparatively better with P-removal efficiencies of 92% and 67%, respectively, than sand (40%) in the laboratory work undertaken. Finally, the research results also suggested landfills in Bhutan do not have appropriate leachate and gas collection facilities. Due to a lack of proper waste segregation, the leachates produced in landfills could be chemically complex. Composting is suggested as a sustainable alternative for SWM in Bhutan to reduce the 50-60% of organic waste disposed of in the landfills if leachate collection and treatment cannot be afforded.

▼ D.Litt. et Phil.
The Western Cape and the UniCity of Cape Town are the only remaining province and metropolitan municipality that have not been won by the ANC since the advent of democratic elections in 1994. The ANC won the Cape Town substructure, one out of six former sub-councils of the Cape Metropolitan Area (CMA) in the 1996. It is the Cape Metropolitan Municipality (i.e. former CMA) which is referred to as the UniCity of Cape Town in this research. The first and only time the ANC controlled the UniCity of Cape Town was between 2002 and 2006. This was as a result of the floor-crossing and the coalition between the NNP and ANC in 2002. The Western Cape is also the only province in which the NNP, DA1, ANC and the DA2 have alternated between 1994 and 2008. These two factors make the Western Cape and the UniCity of Cape Town the most hotly contested areas in South Africa. This political competition has led to accusations and counter-accusations among political parties that parties that have governed the Western Cape and the UniCity of Cape Town have used the allocation of housing services with the intention of achieving personal or party-political interests. The objective of this research has been to apply a combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate whether there is evidence to suggest that those political parties that governed the Western Cape and the UniCity of Cape Town between 1994 and 2008 have used the allocation of housing services to further party-political interests. The two leading questions were whether the political parties that governed the UniCity of Cape Town between 1994 and 2008 skewed the allocation of low-cost housing in favour of their supporters, and, if so, how political-party affiliation has affected the access to the housing services of voters in the Western Cape and the UniCity of Cape Town. The methodology used by the researcher is mainly a combination of the analysis of all available electronic and printed material and extensive interviews with the residents of Joe Slovo and Delft areas. In-depth interviews have also been conducted with leaders of community-based organisations, unions, academics and leaders of political parties. The analysis shows that all political parties that governed the Western Cape and the UniCity of Cape Town between 1994 and 2008 have deliberately targeted those suburbs in which their supporters are in the majority and in which the supporters of their rival parties are in the minority. The analysis in this research also shows that affiliation to political party has affected respondents’ access to housing services. The main recommendation is that political parties should be encouraged not to use party affiliation to determine who get goods/services provided by government in a democratic society.

▼ Objectives: To provide a costing framework for and to cost a publicly financed dental program for low-income uninsured Ontarians. Methods: The costing framework includes: 1. Specifying the terms for examining costs; 2. Describing the service baskets; and 3. Identifying resources for program delivery; measuring resource utilization; and attaching a monetary value to resources and services; and 4. Including additional costs. The robustness of the estimates was assessed using sensitivity analyses. Demographic and insurance data were sourced from national surveys. Utilization and expenditure data were sourced from existing local public programs. Results: Eleven of 36 public health units provided data. The cost of providing dental care to uninsured low-income Ontarians was 262 million per year. The cost was 299 million when including additional services for adults. Conclusions: While this study provides the approximate costs of a publicly funded program for uninsured low-income Ontarians, the lack of outcome data prevents a complete cost-effectiveness analysis.

▼ African women in the past were not given equal opportunities with men in planning and construction of their houses. As a result there is no clear indicative level of participation of women during the planning and construction of their houses. The People’s Housing Process is one of the approaches adopted by government and community organizations to encourage community participation in their housing projects but; women’s involvement is still not clear. Therefore this research is aiming to understand the activities performed by women, their roles in related activities, and the methods that they used to get involved in the planning and construction of their houses.
A Qualitative research has been conducted to identify the level of women’s engagement in planning and construction of their houses in the People’s Housing Process (PHP) project at Piesang River. The findings of the study revealed that the Urban Poor Fund (UPF) savings system, together with the government subsidy for housing, empowered women to participate in planning and construction of their houses at Piesang River. Moreover; the findings indicated that town planning procedures and bylaws were not properly applied during project planning and implementation.
In conclusion this dissertation recommends the formation of Municipal Community Partnership (MCP) for Piesang River FedUP community and EThekwini municipality, in which both stakeholders work together to address the way forward for the project in preference to continuing blaming each other for the shortfalls.

▼ In Sub-Saharan Africa, 80-90% of all infectious diseases are water borne. Governments in these countries spend a significant proportion of their budgets importing alum and chlorine from western nations for municipal water treatment. More than 1.2 million people lack safe drinking water in developing countries. Apart from high
cost of treating water in sub-Saharan Africa, waterborne microorganisms are developing resistance to currently used disinfectants such as chlorine. To meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of providing safe drinking water, alternative and complimentary approaches such as the application of Moringa oleifera plant materials and sand filters are being studied. Previous research regarding the application of Moringa oleifera (MO) seeds have focused on the isolation of bioactive coagulant ingredients for more than four decades, with little attention directed toward field application in small and large scale water treatment applications. Slow sand filters take more than two weeks to generate clean water but there have been few studies directed towards integrating Moringa oleifera and other plant disinfectants with sand filters to generate clean water in a relatively short retention times at faster flow rates, generating a more compact filter unit. This research sought to fill this knowledge gap. Quantitative research techniques were applied to test a Moringa-sand filter column for its disinfection activity on separate synthetic contaminated water containing E. coli, Aeromonas hydrophila, total heterotrophic soil bacteria and fungi. The constructed Moringa-sand filter column was analyzed for its coagulant activity using synthetic turbid water made from bentonite and soil. Further research into documentation of indigenous knowledge and the use of indigenous medicinal plants in Cameroon with a history of use in purifying water was carried out at both the Phytobiotechnology Research Laboratories in Bamenda, Cameroon and the Microalgae Research Laboratory of the School of Chemical Engineering, Adelaide University. The coagulant and disinfection ability of the plants using surface contaminated water was carried out at the Phytobiotechnology Research Laboratories in Cameroon, followed by in-vitro antimicrobial activity of the organic extracts using microbial isolates from stream water in Bamenda, Cameroon. The coagulant and disinfection potential of Moringa oleifera seed extracts were superior to other plant materials. To this effect, further studies on Moringa oleifera seeds were planned and executed at the Microagae Laboratory, School of Chemical Engineering, Adelaide University. Extracts of Moringa seed powder using solvents of varying polarity revealed more than 85% in-vitro antibacterial activity against E. coli (ATCC11775) strain (indicator of faecal contamination of water) and 95% against Aeromonas hydrophila strain (known to resist chlorination) compared to control of both organisms of 65% for aluminum sulphate and 80% for sodium hypochlorite. ▼ Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the most representative, rapidly growing, and highly extendable technologies, which uses electromagnetic waves in accordance with specific communications standards and regulations to identify, track, or even localise desired objects. However, due to its high cost, limited read range, and uncertain reliability, its adoption still lags, especially in large-scale organisations. Even though an RFID distributed antenna system (DAS) can greatly improve the detection range and read rate of a single reader when system uses different combinations of antenna states with frequency and phase hopping, the lossy and heavy coaxial cables between reader and antennas still limits the system coverage and design flexibility for wide-area passive UHF RFID applications.
In order to develop a cost-efficient and flexibly-installed passive RFID DAS, a novel large-range passive UHF RFID system over twisted-pair cable is proposed in this dissertation. This new system consists of one baseband central controller and one antenna subsystem, connected by a commonly used twisted-pair cable. It is shown that transmitting/receiving low frequency baseband signals over a twisted-pair cable can significantly reduce cable attenuation and extend the communication distance. A simulation is conducted to demonstrate that frequency and phase hopping can also be remotely controlled to fit this system structure by slightly varying the frequency or phase of the input reference signal of the frequency synthesis system. The features of twisted-pair cable in terms of its low cost, light weight, and bend radius greatly improve the design and installation flexibility of an RFID system.
The implemented system is designed based on the ISO 18000-6C and EPC Class 1 Generation 2 standards, and can operate according to FCC (902-928 MHz) and ETSI (865-868MHz) regulations. The results of the measurement show the reader can achieve a sensitivity of - 94.5 dBm over 30 m Cat5e cable, and its sensitivity can still remain at around -94.2 dBm over 150 m Cat5e cable. The experimental results of tag detection show that the passive tags can be successfully detected over a 6 m wireless range following a 300 m of twisted-pair cable between the central controller and antenna. This detection range cannot be achieved by existing commercial RFID systems.
Since the transmission and reception in a RFID system are simultaneous, finite isolation of the circulator/directional coupler and environmentally dependent reflection ratio of the antenna lead to serious leakage problems. Leakage can directly cause sensitivity degradation due to saturation of the RF components. A fast leakage suppression block is developed in efforts to solve this problem. Measurements show that this new canceller can deliver an average suppression of 36.9 dB, and this excellent performance remains when the system uses frequency hopping. With help of an improved scanning algorithm, this canceller can find its optimal status within 38 ms, and this settling time is short…

▼ Capture of the energy in sunlight relies mainly on the use of light-absorbing semiconductors, in solar cells and in water-splitting devices. While solar cell efficiency has increased dramatically since the first practical device was made in 1954, production costs for the most-efficient solar absorbers, III-V semiconductors, remain high. This is largely a result of use of expensive, slow growth methods which rely on hazardous gas-phase precursors. Alternative growth methods are necessary to lower the
cost for III-V materials for use in solar cells and improve the practicality of water-splitting devices.
The research goal of this dissertation is two-fold: to expand the capabilities of close-spaced vapor transport, an alternative growth method for III-Vs to demonstrate its compatibility with current technologies; and to explore the fundamental chemistry of close-spaced vapor transport as a growth method for these materials. This dissertation surveys plausibly lower-
cost growth methods for III-V semiconductors (Chapter II) and presents in-depth studies on the growth chemistry of two ternary III-Vs: GaAs1-xPx (Chapter III) and Ga1-xInxP (Chapter IV). Finally, the growth of GaAs microstructures which could be utilized in a water-splitting device is studied (Chapter V).
This dissertation includes previously published and unpublished co-authored material.

▼ Advancement in technology has given rise to the need for technology to be utilized in extracting meaningful game-play information from sports. To do so in a ball-game like squash, the prime objective is to perform ball-tracking in an adequate and efficient manner. In squash, ball-tracking is complex due to the small size of the ball, the high-speed movement and constant occlusion due to the continuous movement of the players. The current state-of-the-art ball tracking methods use high-speed cameras along with high-computation power resources to solve these problems in similar sports such as tennis. The aim of this thesis is to solve the challenges in ball-tracking for squash using a low-cost approach with low-computation power resources and a single camera view. A ball-detection system with a high-accuracy and a ball-tracking system which can optimally tackle the problem of occlusion is developed using computer-vision techniques and by utilizing the cues from the game itself. The implementation is carried out on a Raspberry-Pi which is characterized as a low-computation platform with an Arm Cortex-A53 processor. The results show that the tracking-problem can be solved using a low-cost approach for the challenging scenarios that are present in squash. The 2D trajectory of the ball generated as a result can be used for various applications such as line-calling, shot analysis and game analysis.

▼ This thesis presents a critical evaluation of the current responses being made by the new Government of National Unity towards solving the
low cost housing and community development crisis. This crisis is largely confined to the black
low-income residential areas and is manifest in a shortage of adequate formal accommodation, municipal infrastructure and public facilities. Moreover, these areas are also characterised by poverty, poor living conditions, environmental degradation and the socio-economic deprivation of the households living within them. The Reconstruction and Development Programme and the National Housing Policy have recently been introduced by the new Government in response to this problem. The purpose of this study is to examine the degree to which these policies represent an effective long-term solution to this crisis and whether they are an appropriate means through which
low-income households can obtain the type of housing-they both need and can realistically afford. Emphasis is placed upon a critical evaluation of the National Housing Policy and the Cape Metropolitan Region is used as a study area. A household survey was carried out in the black
low-income residential areas of this region in an effort to determine the actual housing and development needs, perceptions, socio economic characteristics and locational preferences of these communities. The results of the survey are presented along with an analysis of the origins, nature and magnitude of the housing crisis in the Cape Metropolitan Area.

▼ To date, three-dimensional measurement is a very important and popular topic in computer vision. Most of the 3D capture products currently in the market are high-end and pricey. They are not targeted for consumers, but rather for research, medical, or industrial usage. Very few aim to provide a solution for home and small business applications. Our goal is to fill in this gap by only using
low-
cost components to build a 3D capture system that can satisfy the needs of this market segment. In our research, we present a
low-
cost 3D capture system based on the structured-light method. The system is built around the HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275. For our capture device, we use the 8.0 Mpixel camera that is part of the M275. We augment this hardware with two 3M MPro 150 VGA (640×480) pocket projectors. We also describe an analytical approach to predicting the achievable resolution of the reconstructed 3D object based on differentials and small signal theory, and an experimental procedure for validating that the system under test meets the specifications for reconstructed object resolution that are predicted by our analytical model. By comparing our experimental measurements from the camera-projector system with the simulation results based on the model for this system, we conclude that our prototype system has been correctly configured and calibrated and that with the analytical models, we have an effective means for specifying system parameters to achieve a given target resolution for the reconstructed object.

▼ Technology is transforming almost all aspects of our lives, one of them is automation. The main motivation of automation is to help humans avoid performing tedious, high risk jobs. Automated driving, also known as autonomous driving, has been at the center of industrial and academic attention since a few decades now, thanks to its potential of making driving risk-free by enabling a highly efficient machine control the vehicle on roads. Apart from the common outdoor use-cases, several applications in indoor environments have also been extensively investigated. The primary ones include process automation and management in large factories and warehouses. Localization of the autonomous vehicle is crucial to determine the path to be followed to reach the desired destination. Sensor fusion techniques are extensively investigated for this. However, the major challenge arising in indoor environment localization is obtaining accuracy in the scale of a few centimeters in real-time. In this thesis, we intend to address this challenge. The contributions of this thesis are two-fold. Firstly, we develop a low-cost testbed – Autonomous Ground Drone (AGD) – that enables us to develop sensor fusion and localization scheme for autonomous driving. Secondly, we employ Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) on the sensor combination of UWB, IMU, and Radar, and achieve a localization accuracy of 8 cm. Our localization scheme outperforms state of the art in this field in terms of accuracy, latency, and power consumption. Keywords: Localization, Sensor Fusion, EKF, AGD, low-cost, real-time

▼ Projeto / JEL Classification: L90 – General, L93 – Air Transportation
As low-cost carriers, no longo prazo, estarão
After the deregulation of air transport, new challengers have emerged with an innovative lowcost
business model, accentuating the difficulties in a sector, per si, with reduced profit
margins.
In this competitive environment it is essential for companies, even more so for incumbent
ones (full-service carriers), to focus on a customer-oriented service model.
For that purpose, this study aimed to identify the most-valued purchasing factors by mediumhaul
passengers while simultaneously assessing which of the business models will be better
prepared, in the long-term, to satisfy their needs. In order to respond to these research issues,
after the bibliographic review, the methodological strategy consisted in the preparation of a
Likert Scale questionnaire that allowed to sort by relevance the different purchasing factors
and subsequently analyse its results. In order to guarantee a more practical applicability, the
most crucial purchasing factor was evaluated in a real life scenario, i.e. on the Lisbon-London
route, where various carriers operate with differing business models.
In general terms, it was possible to conclude that, on medium-haul journeys, passengers
clearly value the price, followed by elements related…

Nowadays, there is an increasing need for companies to adapt to its target consumers and added value arises as a determinant factor for any business' survival. With the emerging of the low cost industry, the markets suffered a complete revolution, developing new ways of thinking, planning and competing. The shrinking operational margins make it crucial for companies to have a sharp strategic performance, so as to maintain its sustainability and to increase its competitiveness.
The aim of this project is to analyze the low cost consumers' basic requirements, and also to deeply understand how a company, which is not typically associated with low-cost strategies, was able to establish guidelines for this type of business. This research is based on consumer surveys and employees' interviews and it is intended to study Automobile Dacia S.A.'s strategic actions.
The major conclusions drawn from this study are the fact that price is not the only variable that low cost consumers are concerned with, and also that the association of this kind of brand to an established company - such as Renault - can indeed have a positive effects on such products' competitiveness. Furthermore, I could also conclude that Dacia is currently struggling to find a balanced strategy between the operational and sales departments which could better meet their customers' needs and consequently lead to a more rational and accurate decision when purchasing its products.

The Facebook has been growing continuously, with a significant increase in the number of users, whether companies or individuals. It has become increasingly important for companies to be present in this environment and therefore to create a lasting connection with their consumers.
Consumers are increasingly paying close attention to what is posted on Facebook business pages, especially to other consumer's experiences.
Considering the aviation sector, there is an increasing focus on the use of social networks to promote offers and promotions, to lead to a greater purchase of travel. Consumers turn to Facebook to search content shared by those who have taken the same trip, viewing comments, photos, videos, and more.
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand if the information present on Facebook pages of low-cost airlines has influence in the intention to purchase trips of those companies. For that, a study was carried out through an online survey, in order to find out which factors have an impact on the intention to buy online and whether this impact is positive or negative, and what is the relationship between those factors.
It was concluded that the factors enjoyment and the use of Facebook for information search have no influence on the online purchase of travelling tickets. The factor risk has a negative impact on the purchase of online travel.

jovens. O relatório The Power of Youth Travel (UNWTO, 2012) fundamenta o peso relevante do
do futuro.
oportunidades acarreta a impulsão do segmento turístico jovem junto dos destinos turísticos?

▼ Biosolids are a by-product of municipal wastewater treatment which, when treated to reduce pathogens, can be land applied as a fertilizer. Class A biosolids must contain
low pathogen levels and are unrestricted in their use. This thesis describes methods to identify pathogen and indicator organism (PIO) inactivation mechanisms and PIO inactivation rates for use in
low-
cost low-tech Class A processes. Procedures to control the levels of spiked bacteria and viruses, total solids, volatile fatty acids, pH, and temperature in biosolids are described for their use in laboratory experiments. Methods for coliphage in biosolids as a surrogate for total enteric viruses are also presented. The two-step enrichment method yields a most probable number estimate of coliphages and was found to have minimal interference from solids, limit background bacteria interference, and may be a useful process monitoring tool at wastewater treatment facilities.

▼ Usability testing is a branch of usability engineering that focuses on analyzing and improving user interactions with computer systems. This testing technique has been used in different industries for years and has proven to be very useful in determining major issues with applications before they are released, however the use of this technique has been slow to gain widespread acceptance in testing health information systems. This study was designed to determine if a specific form of usability testing,
Low-
Cost Rapid Usability Testing, can be introduced as a standard part of the system development lifecycle (SDLC) for health information systems in a
cost effective manner. To determine if this was possible a full
cost-benefit analysis of
Low-
Cost Rapid Usability Testing was performed on a health information system, the BC Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Toolkit, tracking all of the costs involved in the testing process and comparing them against the possible costs that may have been incurred if this testing was not performed. It was found that by introducing this technique into the system development lifecycle to allow for earlier detection of errors in a health information system it is possible to achieve an estimated 36.5% to 78.5%
cost saving compared to the impact of errors going undetected and causing a technology-induced error. Overall it was found that
Low-
Cost Rapid Usability Testing can be implemented in conjunction with other testing techniques in a
cost effective manner to develop health information systems, and computer systems in general, which will have a lower incidence of technology-induced errors.

“Low cost” is nowadays a very mobilized concept in innovation and new product development both in the general press and in the scientific literature. In management sciences, theconcept is widely mobilized in strategy, marketing as well as new product development. However, there seems to be a lack of a design model for such an approach, making difficult for managers to implement the development of low cost offers. Our work shows that existent low cost products had followed different design rules that could be modelled. We propose a low cost design model that distinguishes two approaches: low cost adaptation and smart low cost design. In low cost adaptation approach, the product is…

▼ This pedagogical case study is dedicated to show the recent changes in the airline industry,
whereby the majority of the so-called ‘flag carriers’ disappeared, either through privatization or
bankruptcy. This is due to lack of capacity to adapt to a new environment, by which network
carriers and low cost carriers are fighting with continuous cost reduction and business model
changes in order to attract more passengers. Recent studies show that the model of low cost
carriers is more suitable in the short haul markets, through which carriers can focus on point-topoint
execution rather than network fares. Therefore, network carriers are being forced to reevaluate
their way of service with a result of a new model adapted from the low cost carriers.
The case study will present the incident of Malév, the Hungarian flag carrier, focusing on the
steps that lead to bankruptcy, and analysis of the competitors’ strategic movements occurred
right after its official stop of operations on February 3rd, 2012.
rede.

This study identifies the short term impacts of Low-Cost Airlines (LCAs) on Madeira
Islands. By analysing the relevant literature, this study describes the interdependence
between tourism and air transport, and the effect that the low-cost airline concept has on
both industries. Both generic and industry specific impacts are drawn from the literature,
while explaining the advantages and disadvantages of this airline business model.
LCAs have experienced tremendous growth in Europe since its birth in the mid 1990’s
and have now reached Madeira Islands, a tourism destination still served mainly by
charter operations offering tour operator’s package holidays. Research made out of
airport and tourism statistics, shows evidence of a significant mismatch between offer and
demand in the tourism industry that could possibly be diminished by the entry of LCAs in
the market.
Findings suggest that, as previously observed for other regions, LCAs do in fact generate
significant airport passenger growth, therefore increasing the number of tourists visiting
the islands and spending nights at the hotels. However, the average length of stay
decreases as more flight frequency induces flexibility and shot-break vacations.
While long term impacts are yet to be measured, in order to achieve a balance between
tourism supply and demand, as well as higher economic development, all players in the
market must join efforts in developing strategies that will promote sustained growth.
no mercado.
menor duração, a estada média decresce.
