▼ Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) is the most important mineral to the rock magnetic and paleomagnetic communities and is ubiquitous in igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Larger multidomain (MD) magnetite grains are more common than single domain grains, so understanding how they record paleomagnetic fields would be a boon to paleomagnetists. MD magnetite grains are divided into multiple domains, regions with uniform magnetization, separated by domain walls. Domain walls sweep through magnetite grains easily, so slight changes in ambient magnetic fields can alter the magnetization of MD magnetite. Because of this, MD magnetite is not considered reliable for paleomagnetic studies, and the mechanisms by which MD grains may record past magnetic fields are not well understood. Dislocations, linear crystallographic defects, may increase magnetic coercivity by pinning domain walls in place. This study, for the first time, experimentally investigates this pinning behavior by using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) to simultaneously image magnetic domain walls, dislocations, and low-temperature twin structures. Magnetite grains were deformed in the dislocation glide regime, which is active in natural magnetite grains. Dislocations were not uniformly distributed throughout the sample, but regions with more and longer dislocations pinned domain walls more strongly. First-order reversal curve diagrams demonstrate the presence of regions with pinning strengths of over 125 mT. The strength of domain wall pinning at dislocations was found experimentally and theoretically to be proportional to dislocation length, with longer dislocations pinning more strongly. Average pinning fields were around 0.2 mT. Magnetite grains with more uniformly distributed dislocations would likely have coercivities that were high enough to enable MD magnetite to record geomagnetic fields over geologic timescales. Further, low-temperature TEM and magnetic studies demonstrated that dislocations can affect twin growth in magnetite below the Verwey transition. Deformed magnetite samples had more soft-shouldered Verwey transitions and were able to retain more remanence after low-temperature demagnetization (LTD). Therefore, MD magnetite grains may be able to retain relevant magnetizations, even after LTD. Dislocation length, density, and distribution are then all important considerations when investigating the ways in which MD magnetite may retain a stable record of paleomagnetic field characteristics, even after LTD.

Laboratory magnetic measurements are used to develop a methodology to characterize the Kiruna-type Rare Earth Elements (REE) bearing apatite iron-oxide deposits at Blötberget in central Sweden. This high-grade ore deposit is known to have sharp boundaries between lens shaped main ore bodies of magnetite-rich ore, and a complex hematite-rich ore associated with pegmatites and skarn formation. The thesis covers laboratory magnetic measurements of 37 samples originating from eight drill cores and reference samples from previously mined area. It focuses on on-covering how the samples relate in terms of magnetic susceptibility, further its dependency on temperature, frequency, field and the orientation. The results are correlated with petrographic analysis previously performed on accompanying thin sections. The measurements show that magnetite with strong susceptibility contribution overshadow the hematite contribution in the samples. Transition changes in susceptibility are noticeable when crossing the Verwey temperature; -153°C, Curie temperature; 580°C and Néel temperature; 680°C. The Morin temperature appears at -60°C, or is missing. Linear relationships are identified between the magnitude difference in susceptibilities across transitions at high temperature and wt% magnetite and hematite have been identified. The Blötberget skarn and hematite-rich ore samples have a higher degree of susceptibility anisotropy than the other ore-types. Blötberget samples are dominated by multidomain characteristics in remanence, saturation and coercivity. High temperature measurements have shown that the magnetite is close to pure. The low temperature measurements suggest hematite is impure or bears a petrological footprint. The study also shows that rich iron ore samples sometimes can be at risk of being overlooked with standard methods of measuring susceptibility

Laboratorietekniska metoder kan användas som ett komplement till malmgeologi och geofysisk prospektering. I denna metodstudie karaktäriseras apatitjärnmalm från Blötberget, nära Grängesberg. En fyndighet bestående av linsformade malmkroppar rika på magnetit och ofta avskilda men komplexa hematitrika stråk. Studien är gjord 37 prover från totalt 8 borrkärnor, och lokaler som tillhörde produktion från gruvverksamhet under 1900-talet. ▼ Multiferroics exhibit tremendous potential in technological applications, of which the interplaybetween the ferro-/antiferromagnetic, ferroelectricity, and ferroelasticity can be manipulatedby external parameters such as electric or magnetic fields and even can be created byproper control of internal parameters, such as oxygen-content, cation doping, and internalpressure. Invaluable insight into the multiferroicity can be provided by investigating the roleof such parameters in the crystallographic and magnetic structures of transition metal oxides.In this thesis, a comprehensive studies of contribution of oxygen-deficiencies and cation dopingto the various phases are presented, which utilize the neutron and synchrotron powderdiffraction.The multivalent nature of cobalt ions in SrCoO3􀀀d causes an oxygen-content dependentphase diagram. It is vital to determine the precise crystallographic and magnetic structure ofoxygen-vacancy ordered SrCoO3􀀀d , which provides prerequisite to reveal the mechanism ofits multiferroicity in the corresponding thin film samples. Using the neutron and synchrotronpowder diffraction techniques, the correct space group and precise magnetic structures aredetermined for the different oxygen-vacancy ordered phases: the brownmillerite SrCoO2:5,the tetragonal SrCoO2:875, and the cubic SrCoO3.Ferroelectricity can be induced by the canted spin configuration, which exists widely inthe frustrated spin systems. With such an expectation, Zn-substituted CuFe2O4 was studiedand a comprehensive phase diagram was built for Cu1􀀀xZnxFe2O4. Spin canting couldlead to a spin spiral phase which could possibly induce a multiferroic state as observed inCuFeO2. The purpose of this project was to further investigate the spin canting in ZndopedCuFe2O4 and elucidate the possibility of multiferroicity in this system. Furthermore,pure ZnFe2O4 is already an interesting highly frustrated spin system. Magnetite is the oldestknown magnet. As the first known multiferroics, the ferroelectricity in Fe3O4 is drivenby the Verwey transition. However, the microscopic origin of the Verwey transition in Fe3O4is still in debate. In order to obtain a deeper insight into the mechanism of the charge ordering,Cu-doped Fe3O4 was investigated using the high-resolution neutron and synchrotrondiffraction. The main emphasis was the stability of the Verwey transition with charge carrierdoping. The dissertation provides a discussion and comparison of the ideas of Martin Buber and Albert Camus regarding human connectedness and solidarity, ethics and politics. The aim of the dissertation is to examine the ways in which these thinkers dealt with the possible tension between human solidarity and connectedness on the one hand, and the need for ethical restraints on the other. The dissertation begins with a presentation and comparison of certain aspects of Buber’s and Camus’ respective biographies. It then examines and compares the thinkers’ views regarding human relationship, especially given the loss of the traditional existential and moral anchors in the wake of modernity. At the centre of the comparison stands the difference between Buber, a believer who understood connectedness and dialogue between human beings and with God to be a primordial and inherent need that could and should be fulfilled; and Camus, who was secular in his personal beliefs, and discussed a concept of solidarity which is largely based on rebellion against oppression and shared human experience in the face of the absurd – the bold acknowledgement of human beings’ inability to fully achieve harmony and meaning. The second part of the dissertation discusses the conceptual ethical mechanisms the two thinkers developed in order to prevent connectedness or solidarity from devolving into destructive social and political behaviour. It presents the possible ethical problems that arise from Buber’s account of spontaneous, unmediated connectedness, and critically discusses the solutions that he offers to address these problems. Buber’s views are then compared with those of Camus, who confronts the potential problem of destructive solidarity most of all by placing ethical considerations at the basis of his concept of solidarity. The final chapter discusses the two thinkers’ different positions regarding political phenomena and events of their time, positions which reflect their respective calls for connectedness and solidarity on the one hand, and the need to restrain collective political action on the other. In particular, the chapter presents the thinkers’ views on political efforts to achieve redemption and utopia, and Buber and Camus’ respective approaches toward the Jewish-Arab conflict and the conflict in Algeria.

The aim of this thesis is to study the thought of two writers-Nobel prize winners from a comparative point of vue. This essay contains a thorough analysis of their texts and their common points in order to search and reveal their spiritual affinities. The study was based on the reading of the original texts, a study of analogies, with the help of previous studies about their literary thought. The analysis opens in major points of their work: the Metaphysics of light and their relationship with the Mediterranean, the absurd, the revolt (ideas that come mainly from the philosophy of the French writer), the ancient philosophers and the way in which this philosophy is present to their work. More precisely, the first part contains the analogies of light, one notion which played a major part and it is very fundamental from a philosophical sense. The analogies are wide spread in their writings and they give us the first steps in order to reach their main ideas and philosophy. The sun, the sea and the nature are the main elements which have built their art but also always present in their life. The third and the fourth chapters try to examine the absurd and revolt, two notions found on Elytis since he read The rebel and he also embraced the main ideas of his contemporary so as he could incorporate some of the elements in a very creative manner. We further focus on their artistic influences and the literary surroundings or movements of their time (surrealism, existentialism). Furthermore, the next chapter is a comparison between the two writers and the ancient philosophers, or rather the main philosophers that have been their influence and formed their mentality. The great philosophers Embedocles, Heraclitus, Plato, Plotinus give an adequate example that helps us build a clear image of their philosophical roots. After that, we put under comparison the development of their art and artistic ideas, so as to have a complete view of their philosophy. In concluding, this thesis is a contribution to the world of research and new researchers, who will offer much more and interesting results.

Στη διδακτορική διατριβή μου, ασχολήθηκα εκτενώς με το έργο του Albert Camus του οποίου το έργο συνέκρινα με εκείνο του Οδυσσέα Ελύτη. Συγκεκριμένα, έγινε μια αναλυτική τοποθέτηση αναφορικά με άξονες όπως το παράλογο και η εξέγερση, κεντρικές έννοιες στο έργο του Γάλλου συγγραφέα και την επίδραση που είχαν στο έργο του Έλληνα ποιητή. Οι δύο συγγραφείς έζησαν στην ίδια ιστορική περίοδο, υπό κοινές προσλαμβάνουσες, συνθήκη που διεμόρφωσε μια ίδια φιλοσοφία. Το πρώτο μέρος της εργασίας ασχολείται με τη Μεταφυσική του φωτός, ως η κεντρική ιδέα που διέπει όλο το έργο. La thèse rend compte d’une tentative de penser le rapport entre les mythes bibliques et l’œuvre d’Albert Cohen. Pour cela, la première partie de la thèse s’emploie à mettre en lumière la façon dont les mythes de la Genèse deviennent des palimpsestes sur lesquels se greffe l’existence simultanée d’interprétations superposées et souvent contradictoires. Langage codé par excellence, le mythe dévoile le mystère des commencements en même temps qu’il peut renforcer sa profonde opacité. L’hypothèse est que sous le couvert d’une dialectique entre la création et la chute, les mythes dissimulent une complexité générique : il s’agit de l’articulation problématique de l’origine et de sa résistance à toute tentative d’élucidation. Tout s’articule autour du savoir que les mythes véhiculent sur les genres biologiques (animal / humain), les genres grammaticaux (masculin / féminin) et les genres du discours religieux (religieux ou philosophique/ littéraire). Dans une deuxième partie, la thèse examine les enjeux religieux et philosophiques des mythes et des figures messianiques, en tant que modèles de joie, d’espérance et de rédemption. Le messianisme, en tant que phénomène d’espérance réactualise la quête de la plénitude, qui vient cependant se heurter à l’insatisfaction ontologique de l’homme. Dans une troisième partie, une analyse de l’œuvre sous les feux croisés des mythes de la révolte (Babel, Satan, Job) vient éclairer la dimension ambivalente d’un Dieu qui se dérobe à toute tentative de compréhension. Cette étude est sous-tendue par deux axes de lecture qui mettent en évidence la glorification d’une révolte humaine et la nécessité d’arriver à une compréhension de l’humain, qui serait affranchie de toute scorie mythique.

This thesis is an attempt to understand the relationship between biblical myths and the works of Albert Cohen. The first part of the thesis examines how the myths of Genesis form the main platform on which multiple, and often contradictory meanings tend to manifest themselves. Being mainly a coded language, the myth is profoundly ambivalent as it is the privileged receptacle of different interpretations. Under an apparently ordered story about the creation of man and his downfall, caused by the original sin, the myth hides a generic complexity: the problematic articulation between species (human / animal), genders (male / female) and genres (religious or philosophical / literary). In the second part, the thesis highlights the religious and philosophical aspects of the messianic figures and myths. Messianic attempts at regaining a sense of completeness often coincide with the ontological feeling of dissatisfaction, experienced by mankind. The third part of the thesis deals with myths of revolt and disobedience (Babel, Satan, Job) which highlight the ambivalent nature of the biblical God. This study underlines the glorification of human revolt and the need to ascertain a humanistic view of mankind, free from mythical underlyings.

On n'en prend pas souvent la mesure, Albert Camus c'est à la fois une œuvre et une conduite. Dans la construction de l'identité de l'écrivain-polygraphe, la scène du périodique a été une expérience matricielle. Loin de se réduire au double paradigme de l'absurde et de la révolte, on voit ainsi poindre la figure d'un intellectuel écrivant, ancré dans la bataille des idées de son époque, et dont le jeu spéculaire postule un « agir par le dire.» Notre étude, charpentée en trois phases, tente d'abord de cerner les modèles auctoriaux qui nourrissent son engagement civique ainsi que ses chevaux de bataille au cœur du XX ème siècle en crise. Elle tente ensuite d'éclairer les modulations, les stratégies énonciatives par lesquelles se structure la poétique d'une écriture de combat intimement liée aux urgences du contexte, et en constant ajustement avec les contraintes génériques ; se profile ainsi en filigrane la manière dont l'écrivain-journaliste gère la tension constitutive à tout discours journalistique engagé : informer avec objectivité/impossibilité de dire sans prendre parti. Enfin, l'analyse s'attache à examiner par quelle scénographie auctoriale le journaliste-rhéteur, dont la parole, en prise sur un auditoire à la fois situé et virtuel, postule une efficacité rhétorique, trouve sa voie dans la polyphonie discursive du cotexte. En redécouvrant un auteur canonique par-delà le cadre contraint du « champ littéraire et intellectuel » des « années noires », on mesure non seulement ce que l'écrivain doit au journaliste, mais surtout en quoi son expérience du périodique concentre toute l’œuvre sous la plume, et éclaire du même coup la posture hétérodoxe et singulière d'un des derniers héritiers du « temps des prophètes ».

Ones does not take often measurement of it, Albert Camus is at the same time a work and a control. In the construction of the identity of the writer-polygraph, the scene of the periodical was a matric experiment. Far from being reduced to the double paradigm absurdity and revolt, one sees stinging the figure of a writing intellectual, anchored in the battle of the ideas of his time, and whose specular game applies one “to act by saying it.” Our study, constructed in three phases, initially tries to determine the auctorial models which nourish its civic commitment like its hobby horses in the middle of the XX ème century in crisis. Secondly tries to clarify the modulations, the enunciative strategies by which structure the poetic one of a writing of combat closely related to the urgencies of the context, and in constant adjustment with the generic constraints; is profiled who makes in filigree of it, the way in which the writer-journalist manages the constitutive tension with any committed journalistic speech: to inform with objectivity/impossibility of saying without coming out. ▼ Biodegradables material nowadays selected as a solution for replace the current material in packaging industry. Kenaf fibre is a good material for substitution of chemical material according to their properties. Comparison between Simulation of MATLAB Simulink and cushion of Kenaf fibre by analyzed their dynamic shock properties and dynamic cushion curves are the focus of this project. Generally, this project is using Stress Energy method to evaluate the capability of a Kenaf fibre cushion to withstand the sudden shock resulting fiom free fall. The result will be guide by the simulation of Matlab Simulink software. A series of cushion test for 50 samples was carried out to determine the peak acceleration, (G's) for simulation and Kenaf fibre cushion at difference drop height, thickness and mass. There are 5 mass type used to generate the Static loading. These static loading choose by Dynamic energy calculation in Stress energy method. There are 3 type thickness of Kenaf fibre cushion used in this project. The result of peak acceleration, (G's) from both methods used to develop the Dynamic stress versus Dynamic energy graph. This graph generates Stress energy equation and regression percent. The equation also give the value of (a) and (b) used in generate the cushion curve. The regression value R2 will indicate of how well the equations fit the data and; R2 simulation 81.2% and experiment 92%. Generally, the shape of curves for experiment same shape as simulation but difference at minimum peak acceleration and static loading. Kenaf fibre cushion with thickness 25 mm at drop height 406 mm give peak acceleration 121.7 G compare to simulation 170.6 G, while for sample thickness 50 mm peak acceleration 62.0 G and simulation 83.6 G. Thickness 75 mm gives the lowest peak accelerations where for Kenaf fibre 40.7 G and simulation 59.6 G. Comparing the minimum peak acceleration will give the conclusion that there is decreasing of G peak when thickness increases. The result can conclude that kenaf fibre cushion with 25 mm thickness suitable for handheld part, 50 mm suitable for durable part and 75 mm suitable for stable part according to table of fragility levels.

▼ This dissertation is a study of how imperial Brazil (1840-1889) shaped and was shaped by the history of international abolitionism. It traces the development of a geopolitical imagination amongst African and Afro-Brazilians in the context of Britain’s crusade against the slave trade and, especially, the American Civil War. Focusing on the 1850s and 1860s, I show that antislavery ideas with roots in the Atlantic world were a source of empowerment for blacks during the process of Brazilian emancipation. Ultimately, I argue that Afro-Brazilians subverted and expanded Anglo-American abolitionism to signify a decisive alliance for the abolition of slavery in all of the Americas. By radicalizing their geopolitical knowledge and framing their sense of identity beyond the nation-state, Afro-Brazilians offered a radical interpretation of the Age of Emancipation that directly influenced the origins, meanings, and legacies of abolition in Brazil. This study builds upon the fields of the Social History of Slavery and the African Diaspora as they allow for a shift in perspective when it comes to the role of Brazil in the Atlantic world. Afro-Brazilian renderings of Anglo-American anti-slavery bring to light a longer narrative of black activism that places the country at the center of the political struggles of the time. My conclusions are foregrounded by the critical reading of Brazilian judicial, governmental, and diplomatic sources, including correspondence exchanged with Britain and the United States over the mid-nineteenth-century. As the first detailed study of how Afro-Brazilians interpreted the U.S. Civil War, this dissertation approaches Brazil as one of the sectional conflict’s theaters of operations. Through the examination of black uprisings in the provinces of Maranhão, Pernambuco, Minas Gerais, and Pará, among others, I demonstrate that Afro-Brazilians seized upon the U.S. war as a transnational struggle for emancipation while the imperial government labored to bar the circulation of subversive ideas capable of challenging the vibrancy of slavery in the country. Intent on preventing the emigration of African Americans, Emperor Pedro II’s administration enforced a notion of racial frontier with lasting implications for the enfranchisement of blacks in Brazil for many decades to come. The self-determination of the men and women during the chattel period to learn to read and write, does not go unnoticed by historians. While unlawful for slaves to learn to read and write those held in captivity would go to great lengths to learn to do so. Literacy meant a great deal to the slave population, most important was their freedom. Yet, present day trends in education demonstrate that the national achievement gap in the United States predominantly affects African Americans. Educators and government officials have considered such things as economics, culture, and the structure of the home as the primary reasons for the current trends in education. Perhaps many of the issues in education can be better understood by examining the historical shift within the African American community's views on education in the hundred years following the Civil War, as well as the role of the federal government. Using primary as well as secondary source material, this narrative adds a new perspective in understanding the historical consequences of the role of the federal government, as well as the contributions of black advocates to African American education. The extent to which education was advocated for the black community was largely based on the events occurring simultaneously throughout the country. Research has shown that African Americans achieved greater success in education when important black leaders made learning their focus, as well as when the federal government took an active role in funding education. Unfortunately, with so much social discord in the United States following the Reconstruction Era, members of the African American community did not always hear a consistent message about the importance of education, which could very possibly be a component in the current issues related to education.

This thesis aims to examine the key philosophical premises of Albert Camus' moral and political thinking by retracing as yet unacknowledged philosophical influences that form the core of his tragic vision of human freedom. The first part focuses on the fundamental influence of his encounter with Christian and ancient metaphysics discussed in his early dissertation on Christian Metaphysics and Neoplatonism, and then examines the similarities he shared with the materialist theories of Ludwig Feuerbach and the Marquis de Sade, which, I argue, impacted on Camus' own conception of the tragic paradigm of Nature, God, and Man, as well as his philosophy of the Absurd. This is followed by an analysis of his reaction to German philosophy, notably Hegel, the influence of Nietzsche on Camus' concept of the Will to Happiness, and how these determined his views on nihilism. – The latter chapters are devoted to Camus' relationship to the philosophy of existentialism, both Christian and Marxist, with the attempt to dispel the common designation of his belonging to either of these two schools of thought, and to highlight the originality of Camus' own position, despite the themes he shared with them. Chapter Six examines his early connection to communism and how the two traditions of liberal and revolutionary socialism influenced his political ethics, with particular attention paid to the subject of poverty, and the views he expressed in his journalistic articles in Algeria on the Misery of Kabylie and later in Combat. It also considers his views on Utopian thinking, teleological ideologies, and the consequences of historicism, based on both Christian and German philosophical traditions. The final chapter examines his philosophy of revolt in The Rebel, the concept of Nemesis, and how these relate to natural law theory as a major influence on his philosophical ideas of morality and ethics.

Le présent travail examine l’œuvre à la fois romanesque et théâtrale d’Albert Camus dans sa réception des concepts constitutifs de la conscience telle que l’entend la tragédie grecque. Il s’agit de mettre en évidence la manière dont ces concepts sont reçus, transformés et enfin incorporés dans l’univers littéraire et philosophique de Camus. Conscience signifiant la connaissance que chacun a de soi-même (de son thumós), le mot fait appel à une connaissance susceptible d’être partagée avec les autres. Autour de la volonté de l’existence s’organisent donc des sentiments d’unité et de cohérence, d’autonomie et d’hétéronomie. Entre le retour sur soi d’un côté et l’ouverture au monde de l’autre, la conscience figure comme préoccupation essentielle de l’esprit tragique et camusien également. Au cœur d’une antithèse continuelle, l’homme doit transformer le coup du Destin et de l’Absurde en champ fécond : Revendication et Révolte constituent, dès lors, le chemin à suivre pour être et, surtout, demeurer humain. De l’affirmation du « soi » tragique au « métier d’homme » exigé par l’écrivain, conscience et identité s’entrelacent et font de l’individu le créateur du sens. À travers les éléments fondateurs de la conscience tragique, Camus envisage ainsi une identité qui, consciente de ses contradictions, ses droits et ses devoirs, demeure cohérente : l’identité de l’homme révolté.

This thesis examines Albert Camus’ work, both fictional and dramatic, in its reception of conscience’s primary concepts as introduced by the Greek tragedy. The point is to find out how these concepts are received, transformed and finally incorporated in Camus’ literary and philosophic world.Conscience meaning the knowledge that everyone has of himself (thumós), it aims at a knowledge supposed to be shared with the others. Around the desire of existence therefore, feelings of unity and coherence, autonomy and heteronomy set up. Between introspection on one hand and opening to the world on the other, the conscience figures as a key theme for both tragic and camusian reflection. At the heart of enduring oppositions, the person must transform Destiny’s and Absurd’s blow into a productive range: thus, Requisition and Rebellion trace the way to go in order to be and remain human. From tragic « self » affirmation to the « human vocation » required by the author, conscience and identity interact and indicate the individual as the creator of meaning. Through Greek tragedy’s essential principles, Camus aims thereby at an identity which, aware of its contradictions, its rights and duties, remains consistent: the rebel’s identity.
