▼ There is growing evidence to suggest that small energetically favourable clusters play an important role in the thermodynamics and dynamics of liquids. However, identifying and quantifying favoured
local structures (FLS) in real liquids remains a challenge.
Ronceray and Harrowell[ EPL, 96 (2011) 36005] developed a simple spin lattice model that explore the effects such structures have on the properties of the liquid and their ability to freeze. By selecting different FLS, they found the model froze to an array of different crystal structures with varying unit cell sizes and complexities through a range of strong and weak first order transitions. This thesis explores how complex structures are formed through nucleation and contrasts the nucleation mechanism of the {1,5} FLS model, which exhibits a weak first order transition, with that of the {3,3} FLS model, which freezes through a strong first order transition. Monte Carlo simulation and the mean first passage time method were employed to calculate the nucleation rate and identify the nature of the critical nucleus for the FLS model systems. The {1,5} FLS system accumulates a significant amount of solid-like
structure in the metastable liquid phase prior to freezing. As a result, the supercooled liquid contains large equilibrium solid-like clusters that fluctuate in size prior to nucleation. After visualization of the spins, the {1,5} FLS system showed that the system forms a
structure close to that of the crystal before crystallization. In contrast, the {3,3} FLS system forms most of its
structure during the transition process. The energy barrier for the {3,3} FLS system was found to be higher than that observed for the {1,5} FLS system. This work examines the role the symmetry and structural correlation of the FLS might play in the different freezing and nucleation behaviours of the two systems.

▼ The field of spintronics, the development of spin-based devices that utilize the spin degree of freedom to increase memory capacity, has emerged as a solution to faster more efficient memory storage for electronic devices. One class of materials that has been extensively studied is the half-metallic ferromagnets, compounds that are 100% spin-polarized at the Fermi level. One material in this group that has been investigated is chromium telluride (Cr1-xTe), whose family of compounds is known to exhibit a wide range of interesting magnetic and electronic properties. We have developed a hot injection solution synthesis of Cr5Te8 nanoplatlets which show similar magnetic behavior to the bulk material. It has also been shown that selenium and sulfur analogues can be obtained without changing the reaction conditions, making progress toward a better understanding of the reaction as well as an interesting family of compounds. Using real-space simulations, the effect of polarons in the high-Tc superconducting cuprates has been studied. The simulations demonstrate energetically favorable sites for the defects and show evidence of longer-range pairing interactions. Variations of the stripe show similar energetic results. X-ray absorption fine
structure spectroscopy and neutron scattering have been utilized to examine the
local structure of Ni-doped Mg nanoparticles, a hydrogen storage material as well as Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanoparticles, a photovoltaic material. The Mg-Ni material shows much
local disorder upon hydrogen cycling. The CZTS data demonstrate a loss of sulfur from around the copper sites upon annealing, helping to explain the changes observed in the optical absorption properties resulting from the annealing process.

▼ A three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution inner
structure of rock sample is premise for reservoir evaluation at pore scale. Micro X-ray computed micro-tomography (micro-CT) is considered to be the most direct way to obtain the 3D inner
structure of porous media without destruction of the sample. Limited resolution of micro-CT image, however, hinders its ability in describing small structures which are critical for its topological features and transportation properties. An effective strategy to solve this problem would be to deploy numerical method to reconstruct high-resolution porous
structure based on micro-CT image. In this thesis, a
local-similarity based reconstruction method is proposed to improve the resolution of porous
structure extracted from micro-CT image. The numerical reconstruction of porous
structure used in this thesis is a supervised prediction process with two steps: extracting prior knowledge (descriptors) from training images and reproducing the extracted descriptors in reconstructed images by applying an appropriate mathematical method. The innovation of this approach is correspondingly embodied in two aspects. In terms of descriptors extraction, the proposed technique uses a pair of registered high- and low-resolution images as training images and the
structure information is stored in a set of image patch (or cube in 3D) pairs extracted from high- and low-resolution training images rather than two-point correlation functions and multiple-point statistics which is widely used in currently popular reconstruction algorithms. In terms of
structure reproduction, a set of mathematical methods including neighbours embedding, sparse representation and convolutional neural networks are applied to reach target
structure as close as possible, reduce computation time and extend its applicability to complex porous
structure. The proposed techniques have been applied in reconstructing porous
structure of Fontainebleau sandstone, Indiana Limestone and a typical shale sample. The reconstruction performance has been evaluated by visual sensitivity, mean square error and morphological measurements. The performance analysis is not only carried out between reconstructed image and high-resolution reference image, also among different reconstruction methods. The experimental result shows that the proposed methods are able to successfully reproduce the
structure features closer to that of the reference image than those reconstruction techniques currently being used.

▼ Fingerprint authentication systems are widely used in military and civil applications due to the distinctiveness and stability that fingerprints can supply. Research in fingerprint authentication systems has made great achievements in the last several decades with authentication technologies in the unencrypted domain becoming mature. However, biometric templates themselves also need to be protected. Conventional encryption technology will lead to poor performance due to the nature of biometric uncertainty presented in each fingerprint image. There are following two streams of research, bio-cryptosystem and cancellable biometrics, in replacing conventional encryption technology. Specifically, bio-cryptosystem is an emerging biometric-key framework that can protect both biometric templates and cryptographic key templates, while cancellable biometrics transforms raw features into a different domain so that the compromised template in the transformed domain cannot reveal the raw template. However, two issues have not been resolved. First, existing fingerprint based bio-cryptosystems and cancellable biometric systems cannot achieve satisfactory authentication performance because it is difficult to overcome fingerprint uncertainty in the encrypted domain. Second, the existing cancellable biometric systems suffer from attacks via record multiplicity (ARM). In this thesis, we tackle the above two critical biometric authentication issues by designing the fingerprint authentication systems based on some stable
local structures in the encrypted domain. The work that has been pursued in this thesis is briefly described below:Firstly, an alignment-free bio-cryptosystem based on modified Voronoi neighbor structures (VNSs) is proposed. The proposed method obviates fingerprint pre-alignment by utilizing the rotation- and translation-invariant feature representations extracted from modified VNSs. Fingerprint uncertainty is mitigated by the construction of VNSs and modification of the originally formed VNSs. Experimental results using the publicly-available databases show the validity of the proposed scheme.Secondly, we propose to adopt the Delaunay quadrangle-based
structure to address the
local structural change under non-linear distortion that the Delaunay triangle-based
structure experiences. A unique topology code originated from each Delaunay quadrangle can assist in accomplishing good
local registration in the presence of nonlinear distortion and can further enhance the security of the overall system on top of what is provided by the secure sketch. Experimental results and security analysis show that the Delaunay quadrangle-based system with topology code can achieve better performance and higher security level than the Delaunay triangle-based system, the Delaunay quadrangle-based system without topology code and some other similar systems. Finally, we develop a dual-structural-layered fingerprint cancellable template system. The new cancellable template can mitigate the negative impact of non-linear distortion on those minutiae…

▼ Metallic glasses (MGs), discovered five decades ago as a newcomer in the family of glasses, are of current interest because of their unique structures and properties. There are also many fundamental materials science issues that remain unresolved for metallic glasses, as well as their predecessor above glass transition temperature, the supercooled liquids. In particular, it is a major challenge to characterize the
local structure and unveil the
structure-property relationship for these amorphous materials. This thesis presents a systematic study of the
local structure of metallic glasses as well as supercooled liquids via classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Three typical MG models are chosen as representative candidate, Cu64Zr36, Pd82Si18 and Mg65Cu25Y10 systems, while the former is dominant with full icosahedra short-range order and the prism-type short-range order dominate for latter two. Furthermore, we move to unravel the underlying structural
signature among several properties in metallic glasses. Firstly, the temperature dependence of specific heat and liquid fragility between Cu-Zr and Mg-Cu-Y (also Pd-Si) in supercooled liquids are quite distinct: gradual versus fast evolution of specific heat and viscosity/relaxation time with undercooling. Their
local structural ordering are found to relate with the temperature dependence of specific heat and relaxation time. Then elastic heterogeneity has been studied to correlate with
local structure in Cu-Zr MGs. Specifically, this part covers how the degree of elastic deformation correlates with the internal
structure at the atomic level, how to quantitatively evaluate the
local solidity/liquidity in MGs and how the network of interpenetrating connection of icosahedra determine the corresponding shear modulus. Finally, we have illustrated the
structure signature of quasi-localized low-frequency vibrational normal modes, which resides the intriguing vibrational properties in MGs.
Specifically, the
local atomic packing
structure in a model MG strongly correlate with the corresponding participation fraction in quasi-localized soft modes, while the highest and lowest participation correspond to geometrically unfavored motifs and ISRO respectively. In addition, we clearly demonstrate that quasi-localized low-frequency vibrational modes correlate strongly with fertile sites for shear transformations in a MG.

▼ Modeling of protein molecules in silico for the purpose of elucidating the three-dimensional
structure where the protein is biologically active employs the knowledge that the protein
conformational space has an underlying funnel-like energy surface. The biologically-active
structure, also referred to as the native
structure, resides at the basin or global minimum
of the energy surface. A common approach among computational methods that seek the
protein native
structure is to search for
local minima in the energy surface, with the hope
that one of the
local minima corresponds to the global minimum. Typical stochastic search
methods, however, fail to explicitly sample
local minima. This thesis proposes a novel algorithm
to directly sample
local minima at a coarse-grained level of detail. The Protein
Local Optima Walk (PLOW) algorithm combines a memetic approach from evolutionary
computation with cutting-edge
structure prediction protocols in computational biophysics.
PLOW explores the space of
local minima by explicitly projecting each move at the global
level to a nearby
local minimum. This allows PLOW to jump over
local energy barriers and
more effectively sample near-native conformations. An additional contribution of this thesis
is that the memetic approach in PLOW is applied to FeLTr, a tree-based search framework
which ensures geometric diversity of computed conformations through projections of the
conformational space. Analysis across a broad range of proteins shows that PLOW and
memetic FeLTr outperform the original FeLTr framework and compare favorably against
state-of-the-art ab-initio
structure prediction algorithms.

▼ The brain is not entirely as it has been described in the classic neuroscientific literature. Physical and chemical properties of brain function can be separated from classical brain structure, allowing for multiple realizations of memory processing and the expression of correlates of consciousness. Further, the brain can be described as energy or information separate from although related to the organic structure which is perhaps subject to technologies which facilitate non-local transfer of data. Chapter 1 introduces the subject and provides sufficient information to explore the major concepts outlined in later sections. Chapter 2 outlines an experimental demonstration of electrophysiological activity in an abiological material which strongly correlates with human quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) frequency spectra under specified geometrical and chemical constraints. In Chapter 3, results indicate that this same amorphous material can effectively store and release information when classically conditioned, indicating learning and network formation can be separated from cells proper. Chapter 4 presents a technology which can effectively link two simple chemical systems such that equal and opposite reactions are induced at locus A upon elicitation of a given event within locus B. Chapter 5 provides a systematic analysis of the electromagnetic field dynamics associated with the aforementioned technology, providing both experimental and theoretical grounding. Chapter 6 is a general discussion which links these concepts and provides a summary of the works as they relate to the protonic brain.

▼ The interest in developing high performance thermoelectric materials has inspired a wide
range of theoretical and experimental studies of their structural, electrical and lattice
dynamical properties. In this dissertation, I have employed x-ray spectroscopy and scattering
techniques to investigate the
local structure and vibrational dynamics of various
fillers and dopants in thermoelectric Co4Sb12-based skutterudites.
X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies were carried out to elucidate the
local structure
of Ga and Yb dopants in a series of polycrystalline YbxGayCo4Sb12. EXAFS data at
Ga K-edge provide direct experimental evidence that Ga dopants occupy two distinct
crystallographic sites. The fraction of Ga occupying the 24g site increases gradually as a
function of additional Yb, reaching 100% when x = 0.4. Combined with the Fermi level
shift observed in the x-ray absorption near-edge
structure (XANES) spectra, we find
the charge-compensated defect model can explain the observed increase of Ga24 fraction
very well. This study provides an important strategy to optimize the thermoelectric
performance in partially filled skutterudites.
Significant interaction between filler species was further investigated in the double-
filled YbxInyCo4Sb12 samples. We found in both Yb-Ga and Yb-In double-filled skutterudites
the
local structure of Ga and In are
subject to the lling concentration of the
secondary filler, Yb. However, contrary to the Ga dopants which form dual-site defects
in the absence of Yb fillers, the result shows that both Yb and In occupy the on-center
2a sites exclusively in their single-lled samples. The temperature dependent EXAFS
results provide further evidence that the In2a, very similar to the normal filler Yb, is
loosely bound inside the cage and vibrates as an Einstein oscillator. This is distinct from
Ga2a which forms a stiff bond with the cage atoms at a rather high Debye temperature.
The vibrational dynamics of Yb fillers has been studied in YbxCo4Sb12 compounds
by performing both EXAFS and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) measurements. The low-energy vibrational mode introduced by the Yb fillers has been successfully detected. We further found that the cubic anharmonic interaction between Yb and Sb is well evident at high temperatures.

▼ Nature tends to modify rather than invent function of protein molecules, and the log of the modifications is encrypted in the gene sequence. Analysis of these modification events in evolutionarily related genes is important for assigning function to hypothetical genes and their products surging in databases, and to improve our understanding of the bioverse. However, random mutations occurring during evolution chisel the sequence to an extent that both decrypting these codes and identifying evolutionary relatives from sequence alone becomes difficult. Thankfully, even after many changes at the sequence level, the protein three-dimensional structures are often conserved and hence protein structural similarity usually provide more clues on evolution of functionally related proteins. In this dissertation, I study the design of three bioinformatics modules that form a new hierarchical approach for
structure prediction and function annotation of proteins based on sequence-to-
structure-to-function paradigm. First, we design an online platform for
structure prediction of protein molecules using multiple threading alignments and iterative structural assembly simulations (I-TASSER). I review the components of this module and have added features that provide function annotation to the protein sequences and help to combine experimental and biological data for improving the
structure modeling accuracy. The online service of the system has been supporting more than 20,000 biologists from over 100 countries. Next, we design a new comparative approach (COFACTOR) to identify the location of ligand binding sites on these modeled protein structures and spot the functional residue constellations using an innovative global-to-
local structural alignment procedure and functional sites in known protein structures. Based on both large-scale benchmarking and blind tests (CASP), the method demonstrates significant advantages over the state-of-the- art methods of the field in recognizing ligand-binding residues for both metal and non- metal ligands. The major advantage of the method is the optimal combination of the
local and global protein structural alignments, which helps to recognize functionally conserved structural motifs among proteins that have taken different evolutionary paths. We further extend the COFACTOR global-to-
local approach to annotate the gene- ontology and enzyme classifications of protein molecules. Here, we added two new components to COFACTOR. First, we developed a new global structural match algorithm that allows performing better structural search. Second, a sensitive technique was proposed for constructing
local 3D-signature motifs of template proteins that lack known functional sites, which allows us to perform query-template
local structural similarity comparisons with all template proteins. A scoring scheme that combines the confidence score of
structure prediction with global-
local similarity score is used for assigning a confidence score to each of the predicted function. Large scale benchmarking shows that the…

▼ Complex architecture multi-lateral wells are relatively new applications in oil and gas field developments because they increase the productivity, reduce the cost of the development, and decrease the footprint and ultimately leading to increased profitability of unconventional oil/gas field projects. In addition to conventional multi-lateral wells, multi-lateral wells with a complex
structure can be constructed with not only horizontal branches but also slanted and/or undulating branches, allowing a single well to maximize the productivity by reaching the reservoir layers that conventional multi-lateral wells are unable to reach.
In this thesis, a three dimensional, single-phase compressible fluid simulator is presented to model performance of a vertical well, a horizontal well, and multi-lateral wells with complex structures with the flow regimes of these hydrocarbon reservoirs. As an alternative approach to Peaceman’s well equation, wells in the reservoir are approximated by a collection of fine rectangular cells in the locally refined areas, and the residual equation is utilized to calculate the flow from reservoir blocks into well cells. The approach is significantly different from conventional applications using Peaceman’s well equations which are limited by the
structure or the path of wells. Combining our reservoir approximation using fine rectangular cells with the
local grid refinement technique, we obtain precise production forecasts and capture accurate pressure distributions around the wells.
To validate this approach, the developed simulator is used for modeling the productivity of a vertical well and a horizontal well in a single-phase compressible fluid reservoir. These results are compared with predictions from a commercial simulator . A slanted well simulation is also performed and compared with predictions from the commercial simulator. The validation tests show that the approach presented is capable of providing accurate production predictions without the well
structure limitation and with shorter simulation times as demanded by the application of a full fine grid refinement method.

▼ Peculiar velocities are the motions of objects in excess of that resulting from the expansion of the Universe. They arise from gravitational interactions, and as such, probe the underlying distribution of dark matter on large scales. Early work in this field was in part driven to explain the peculiar motion of the Local Group of galaxies (LG) inferred from the dipole in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to be 627 ± 22 km/s towards l = 276° ± 3°, b = 30° ± 2°. Recent work has yet to fully account for this observed motion, with the literature suggesting structures beyond 150 Mpc/h may have considerable contributions. Furthermore, several studies have recently claimed a large volume about the LG is participating in bulk flow, suggesting the existence of coherent structure on larger scales then predicted by the current cosmological paradigm. In this work we attempt to address these issues: how is matter distributed in the local Universe, what structures source the motion of the Local Group, and is there evidence of a bulk flow in excess of predictions from ΛCDM? Using redshifts from the 2M++ redshift compilation, we reconstruct the density of galaxies within 200 Mpc/h, allowing for the first time good sampling of important superclusters such as the Shapley Concentration. In this work we compare the predicted velocities from 2M++ to Tully-Fisher and Type Ia Supernova peculiar velocity measurements. We measure a value of β* ≡ f(Ω)/b* = 0.431 ± 0.021, and the root-mean-square density fluctuations of galaxies on an 8 Mpc/h scale to be 0.99 ± 0.04, suggesting f(Ω)σ8 = 0.401 ± 0.024. This value is found to be in strong agreement with measurements from independent methods (including recent analyses of CMB temperature anisotropies). The acceleration of the Local Group arising from 2M++ alone is found to be 540 ± 40 km/s, towards l = 268° ± 4°, b = 38° ± 6°, only 10° out of alignment with the CMB dipole, the best agreement found to date. To account for velocity contributions arising from objects beyond the 2M++ volume, we fit simultaneously for β* and an external dipole in our analysis. We find that such an external velocity model is preferred at the 5.1σ level, with the best fit velocity being 159 ± 23 km/s towards l = 304° ± 11°, b = 6° ± 13°. Finally, we measure the predicted bulk flow of a 50 Mpc/h Gaussian-weighted volume centred on the Local Group. The bulk flow is found to be 230 ± 30 km/s in the direction l = 293° ± 8°, b = 14° ± 10°, in good agreement with predictions from ΛCDM.

▼ Access to water and water scarcity are the most critical impediments to sustainable development in municipal water provision. Good water and sanitation services are essential for health, economic development, and environmental protection. Recognizing the importance of access to a safe and adequate water supply, has become the core business of many cities. Among the major challenges facing
local government regarding basic service provision in South Africa are acute problems of institutional capacity, maintenance of existing infrastructure, mismanagement of funds, high levels of corruption and a lack of public anticipation. There has been public outcry in South Africa about poor performance of municipalities in service delivery. Moreover, a good proportion of service delivery protests relate to municipalities‟ failure to carry out basic maintenance of existing infrastructure. The aim of this study was to assess water service delivery performance in the Municipalities of the City of Tshwane (CoT), City of Cape Town (CoCT) and EThekwini Metropolitan by comparing water service delivery for the three Water Service Authorities (WSAs). In this study the performance of Water Service Authorities is measured using the Regulatory Performance Measurement System (RPMS) using 11 regulatory Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). To find answers to research questions and objectives, the research was conducted through desktop research incorporating both quantitative and qualitative dimensions. Exploring the datasets and frequency tabulations were employed. For the analysis of the relative performance levels toward gaining access to water and sanitation services, the RPMS tool was used. The particular indicators of interest were the changes in performance levels in the provision of basic services for different segments based on RPMS. In line with our findings for Financial Performance Indicator (KPI 9) water supply in the WSAs is undertaken by
local government that have the dual objectives of providing a social service while generating revenue to offset cost. Ironically, most of these WSAs do not recover their operating expenses from their own revenues, and remain dependent on state government for subsidies. The study concludes that the CoT is the best performer on the Financial Performance (KPI 9).The KPI requiring attention is Financial Performance (KPI 9) for the CoCT and EThekwini WSAs with indicators showing need for improvement. Compliance is encouraged for all WSAs on the Financial Performance Indicator (KPI 9) to ensure that their water business is sustainable. The study recommends that the relevant stakeholders and project proponents consider financial viability (sustainability) through the increase in value for money expenditure to grow and diversify revenue.

▼ Vitrification of Hanford high-level nuclear waste is a complex process, which is of great significance to those residing in the state of Washington. One characteristic of the vitrified product, the chemical durability, can be high impacted by the deleterious crystallization of aluminosilicates and lead to a large decrease in the corrosion resistance of the vitrified product. Therefore, this work seeks to understand the influence of starting glass composition on the crystallization behavior of quaternary, quinary, and complex glasses. Techniques employed through with work include X-ray diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, electron probe microanalysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, and synchrotron X-ray and neutron total scattering. It was determined that nepheline composition and microstructure was influence by starting melt composition and heat treatment temperature schedule. Additionally, mixed alkali effects influence crystallization extent and phase assemblage, boron speciation varies upon large fraction of crystallization, and a comparison of cation coordination number between glass and crystalline reference offers a metric for crystallization behavior for a wide range of silicate glasses.

▼ Educational challenges of immigrant children in South African schools include among others, poor English proficiency. This challenge poses a challenge of negative self-efficacy to teachers. I became aware of the immigrants’ challenges from the teachers’ complaints. The teachers complained about the immigrant learners’ poor English proficiency and behaviour.
I also became aware that the immigrant learners isolated themselves from the
local learners. They also did not participate actively during oral classroom activities. I sought to investigate the immigrant learners’ language challenges and how these challenges influence their behaviour in the learning environment. The question that arose is: How does the language challenge of immigrant children in the Foundation Phase classes of South African schools influence their behaviour in the learning environment? The study consists of six chapters.
The literature reviewed provided psychological and sociological theories that explain the relationship between language and behaviour. Programmes that were designed by various education systems were looked at in order to ascertain how the language challenges and behaviour of immigrant school children have unfolded and dealt with in different countries.
The qualitative research method was used. This was a case study of three schools situated in Tshwane North district. Sampling was purposive and data was collected by means of observations, focus group interviews, individual interviews and artefacts. Ethical considerations were also presented. The findings from the data indicate that immigrant learners experience a great deal of frustration, sadness, anxiety and stress relating to coping with prejudice and discrimination because of their poor English. Teachers were also distressed by their inability to assist these learners.
A programme that integrates language teaching with social skills is suggested. The aim is to foster a positive learning environment by incorporating psychosocial content in language teaching. A positive learning environment promotes positive behaviour.

▼ Understanding the processes influencing the spatial and temporal distribution of species is the main focus of ecological studies. Community
structure and organization is affected by
local and regional processes.
Local processes affect population persistence and abundance of species through biotic interactions and abiotic environmental conditions within
local sites. Regional processes, such as species dispersal among patches and colonization/extinction dynamics, can also affect the dynamics and
structure of
local populations and communities. Metacommunity theory considers the interplay of both
local and regional processes as drivers of species distributions among isolated patches. Recent studies suggest considering features such as habitat type, dispersal mode, and spatial scale, along with examining time-series to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the processes affecting community
structure. To address how temporal variation impacts the relative effects of
local and regional processes on metacommunity organization, we performed a two-year study of seasonal variation in Notonecta metacommunity
structure in fishless ponds in southern Michigan. Our result showed that notonectid community composition was affected by environmental, spatial, and spatially structured environmental processes. Notonectid metacommunity
structure was affected by several ponds’ environmental factors and fine to intermediate spatial scales. We also found significant seasonal changes in the relative contribution of environmental and spatial processes to notonectid community
structure. The, with a series of pond in situ studies, we experimentally tested the effects of
local conditions versus dispersal limitation on the heterogeneous distribution of Notonecta species in fishless ponds using adult and juveniles’ responses. Our results provide some support for the importance of
local environmental control of N. irrorata's distribution. They also suggest that dispersal limitation, rather than
local environmental factors, may be responsible for the absence of N. undulata from Lux 2. Findings of our research confirm the inclusion of both spatial and environmental variables for understanding the factors affecting community organization. Moreover, our findings make clear the importance of examining time-series to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the processes affecting community
structure. Finally, our work makes clear that the inclusion of features such as the spatial scale of the study and dispersal behavior may be vital for comprehending the
structure of metacommunities.

▼ Recent natural disasters, such as major tsunamis, have prompted researchers and practicing engineers to improve their understanding of the impacts of bore-like waves on structures and their foundations. The high velocity and the relatively short duration of hydraulic bores causes local scouring which is different from that generated by river flows and waves. The present study uses an experimental model to simulate the propagation of a hydraulic bore over a movable sediment bed placed around a circular pier-like structure. Measurements of water surface elevation, bore propagation velocity and scour distribution were taken. The linear relationship between reservoir depth and bore depth led to an increase in flow acceleration, and thus to an increase in flow velocity. Final scour bed elevations indicated that scour depth was highly dependent on the bore velocity. The scour depth ratios suggested in current design guidelines were significantly lower than those obtained in this study.

▼ Offshore wind turbines are exposed to complex irregular and highly fluctuating environmental conditions. The analysis is, therefore commonly performed in the time domain, resulting in a time consuming and computationally demanding optimization process. In order to reduce the computational cost, an optimization approach using the principle of decomposition can be utilized. Here, it is assumed that when changing dimensions of a structural members, sectional response forces and moments remain constant. This assumption is made for both the actual changed member and for all other members of the structure. Additionally, this is assumed to be valid for a simultaneous change of all members all over the structure. It is the so-called local optimization approach and allows for an individual (local) optimization of each member of the structure. The objective of this thesis is the development of a gradient based optimization framework for the local optimization of structural members of an offshore wind turbine with jacket support structure and the implementation of an algorithm using the principle of decomposition. The development of the gradient based method for the local optimization necessitate the study of changes in global performance when modifying structural members locally and a method to receive these sensitivities in structural performance elementwise. Thereafter, the algorithms were used with the local optimization approach. The implementation was carried out using customized Matlab scripts for the automated load analysis with the finite element solver Fedem WindPower. The UpWind reference jacket used within the OC4-project and the generic NREL 5MW turbine atop were used as the case study for this work. In addition, as the objective function for the optimization process, a cost model that considers both manufacturing and material costs was developed. Finally the evaluation of the speed and the accuracy of the methods proposed is presented and the efficiency of the method is proved.

▼ Urbanisation is the one word that describes best what is currently happening in Africa. Addis Ababa is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa: the number of inhabitants is rising fast. More and more people from the countryside move to the capital. This puts a lot of pressure on the city and causes several problems. One of these problems is the shortage of affordable housing. People are struggling to find a place to live in humane conditions. The number of slum settlements is growing. In order to give people a place to live with improved living conditions, a new type of affordable housing is needed. In 2006 the Integrated Housing Development Program was launched to create more affordable housing (Keffa, 2014). Informal settlements are destroyed and replaced by condominiums. Also in the outskirts of the city areas are cleared from farms, villages and greenery to be replaced by condominiums, large apartment blocks. Large groups of people from the inner city are moved to these new areas, such as Yeka Abado and Legetafo Area. However, the condominium neighbourhoods raise questions and bring along new problems: they differ from the original compound and countryside structures. The system of the condominium neighbourhoods needs critical reflection and improvement. Program, basic infrastructure and human scale needs to be taken into account. To critically reflect and find methods to improve the current condominium neighbourhoods, research on several elements of both the condominium neighbourhoods and slum settlements is needed. The elements of research on the slum settlements will focus on ‘general’ aspects of slum settlements, while the research on the condominiums neighbourhoods will use Legetafo Area as a case study. Part of this research is comparing condominium neighbourhoods in the outskirts of the city with (successful) condominium neighbourhoods in the city centre and the original compound structure currently found in the slum settlements. Using the themes of boundaries, scale, proportion, proximity, density, social spaces, building technologies and income generation, will contribute in forming a design proposal. The design has been developed in trying to provide an alternative design within the condominium neighbourhoods to improve living conditions and create a good functioning and mixed neighbourhood that provides the base for a strong social structure.

▼ The simple cubic ReO₃-type framework has all of the key features required for negative thermal expansion (NTE) arising from the transverse thermal motion of bridging atoms and rotation of rigid polyhedra.
Although ReO₃ itself only displays low NTE below ambient temperature, there is a potentially large family of isostructural fluorides and oxyfluorides that could display NTE.
However, the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of ReO₃-type materials range from strongly positive to strongly negative.
Through extensive use of in situ synchrotron diffraction, this thesis examines the thermal expansion of several ReO₃-type fluorides and oxyfluorides, demonstrating the effects on CTE and related properties of both cation and anion substitution and the disorder produced by these structural changes.

▼ Structural disorder has a profound effect on a material’s physical properties and can be harnessed for diverse technological applications. For example, the transport properties and radiation response of complex oxides are strongly influenced by the ability of the structure to accommodate disorder while maintaining crystallinity. This research focuses on the structural details of disordered complex oxides which are more intricate that previously believed with the actual atomic arrangements exhibiting distinct ordering across different material length scales (heterogeneous disorder). Disordered spinel (AB2O4) and pyrochlore (A2B2O7) structures are characterized and the atomic arrangements are probed with advanced characterization techniques, such as spallation neutron total scattering with high sensitivity to oxygen. The cation inversion mechanism in spinel structures is shown to be more fundamentally the relative fraction of a locally-ordered structural unit. This behavior, along with similar findings in pyrochlore oxides, is rationalized by straightforward extension of Pauling’s Rules (“The Principles Determining the Structure of Complex Ionic Crystals”). The knowledge gained from this work is directly relevant for several energy and nuclear technologies as fundamental insight into the atomic-scale structure of complex oxides can be used to engineer specific functionalities such as radiation tolerance and ion conduction.

Tämän tutkimuksen valossa julkisen sektorin organisaatioissa olisi kannattavinta tarkastella poikkihallinnollisten tiimien optimaalista hyödyntämistä organisaation rakenteelliselle muutokselle asetettujen tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Using a constructivist epistemology and following the model of duality of structure proposed as part of Giddens’s (1982) theory of structuration, an ethnographic approach was undertaken using in-depth interviewing to analyse perceptions of change in Bhutanese society, following the introduction of television. Twenty seven in-depth interviews were conducted with Bhutanese participants across a range of occupations, age groups and locations. Within limitations researcher observation was undertaken in addition to the collection of documentary evidence from the field. Field interview data was transcribed verbatim and themes and ideas were established and categorised. A triangulation style of evaluation used data from the in-depth interviews plus documentary evidence, including audience studies from Bhutan. Analysis was undertaken of participants’ perceptions of changes to daily life from before the introduction of television to after television had been integrated into the majority of urban households. Two major quantitative studies were used to compare the findings. The primary research question was: how has the introduction of global media changed local forms of communication and culture from the perspectives of Bhutanese people? Multi channel international television was introduced into Bhutan in 1999 as part of the Kingdom’s drive towards modernisation and move to become more integrated into the global economy. At the same time the local public broadcasting organisation, the BBS, introduced a local television station. Prior to this Bhutan did not have television and most Bhutanese people lived in isolation with very little contact with, and knowledge of, the world outside their country. Bhutan is a small Himalayan Kingdom with a high proportion of the population not literate. Therefore, the electronic media plays an important role in educating, informing and entertaining the population. However, while television was provided by the state at an affordable level, the internet has remained unaffordable to the majority of the population. The impact of the sudden introduction of globalised television content to the media naïve society is examined, as is the role of localism in the culturally diverse, multi lingual population. Bhutanese people were found to value international content. Program preferences and the amount of viewing had significant impact on the actions of, and interactions between, people in their daily lives. Perceived changes in culture were attributed, predominantly, to the influence of television programs. Substantial changes to the rules relating to communication in households were identified, which had significant impact on the passing down of cultural heritage from the older generation to the younger. The introduction of new resources and decisions of individuals led to changes in the rules and structures of some aspects of society, which led to substantial changes in the daily lives of Bhutanese people.

Any observer can notice the diversity of habitats on Earth. Understanding the links betweenthis diversity of habitats and biodiversity is a core topic in Ecology, Evolution andConservation Biology. In this thesis, I study the ecological (short-term) and evolutionary (long-term) consequencesof spatial structuring and environmental heterogeneities. I develop and analyzeseveral mathematical models, which combine different theoretical frameworks (adaptivedynamics, population genetics, and quantitative genetics). I explore the consequences ofspatial heterogeneities on (1) the conditions for population persistence; (2) the coexistenceof different phenotypes, and (3) evolutionary dynamics of populations. I show that theresults depend on (i) the life-cycle, and in particular whether migration influences local regulation;(ii) the choice of the spatial structure (explicit or implicit, continuous or discrete);(iii) the shape of the trade-off, and hence the costs of adaptation to another resource, andfinally (iv) the potential demographical feedbacks.I use the specific case of hosts and parasites interactions to illustrate the importanceof spatial heterogeneities. As a first example, I show that a heterogeneous application oftreatments can help prevent the spread of resistant parasites or pests. Secondly, I show howspatial…

The dissertation discusses the problem of
coherence between functional and compositional structures of the
city based on evidence that the existing and planned functions,
including the possibilities of moving within the street network,
and urban composition have corresponding or non-corresponding
relation. The investigated problem has been revealed and analysed
regarding the integration of mathematical and graphical modelling
tools. The dissertation is aimed at developing a model for
investigating interdependence between functional and compositional
structures of the city and is based on the analysis of the existing
local centres. The thesis explores the possibilities of its
application for defining formation principles of an effective urban
structure. A study on three local centres situated in the
north-west part of Vilnius has been carried out. The task of the
thesis is to investigate the importance and role of key spatial
features on the formation of local centres and combine the
functional and compositional aspects of the analysis of urban
structure. The dissertation gives recommendations for defining the
principles of urban structure formation of local centres applied in
urban projects: developing strategic solutions to the formation of
the built-up structure and street network, investigating each
component in detail and making context sensitive
decisions.

X-ray Raman Scattering (XRS) is an adequate technique to study the local structure of those compounds as it allows measurements carried out on light elements even using a complex sample environment, like high-pressure or high-temperature device. XRS requires the development of theoretical tools in order to interpret the experimental spectra, we have thus developed a computational code to simulate XRS spectra at K edges. A good agreement between theoretical and experimental spectra at all the edges of references compounds composed of light elements was found, allowing us to use this code to interpret data on alkali borates and silicates. We mainly focused on the oxygen local environment in alkali borates and silicate in order to understand the local and medium range order of the structure of vitreous compounds using crystalline compounds as references. We manage to evidence some specific spectral signature related to the symmetry of the oxygen environment. Some spectral signature can be followed during in situ high-pressure measurements as they give information on the…

The distinction between manufacturing and service jobs has lost some of its relevance due to the growing interpenetration between industrial and service activities. On the other hand, globalization has made it increasingly necessary to distinguish between jobs exposed to international competition (tradable jobs) and those not exposed to it (non-tradable jobs), found in primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. This thesis begins by analyzing the developments and characteristics of tradable and non-tradable employment in France. Which jobs are tradable and which are non-tradable? Are they different in terms of skills, wages, and productivity? How are they distributed around the country? It then studies the interdependencies between these two categories of employment, making an empirical evaluation of the local multiplier effect of tradable jobs on non-tradable jobs in French local labor markets. Lastly, the thesis focuses on workers laid off due to firm closure. It sets out to determine whether the risk of job displacement, and the associated costs, are higher in the tradable sector than in the non-tradable sector.

▼ This thesis treats two main topics: calibrated symplectic foliations, and
local Lie groupoids. Calibrated symplectic foliations are one possible generalization of taut foliations of 3-manifolds to higher dimensions. Their study has been popular in recent years, and we collect several interesting results. We then show how de Rham’s theory of currents, and Sullivan’s theory of
structure currents, can be applied in trying to understand the calibratability of symplectic foliations.
Our study of
local Lie groupoids begins with their definition and an exploration of some of their basic properties. Next, three main results are obtained. The first is the generalization of a theorem by Mal’cev. The original theorem characterizes the
local Lie groups that are part of a (global) Lie group. We give the corresponding result for
local Lie groupoids. The second result is the generalization of a theorem by Olver which classifies
local Lie groups in terms of Lie groups. Our generalization classifies, in terms of Lie groupoids, those
local Lie groupoids that have integrable algebroids. The third and final result demonstrates a relationship between the associativity of a
local Lie groupoid, and the integrability of its algebroid. In a certain sense, the monodromy groups of a Lie algebroid manifest themselves combinatorially in a
local integration, as a lack of associativity.
