▼ Current design procedures for extended shear tab
connections tend to be conservative and often do not include
considerations for axial load. To address these problems, an
investigation into the behaviour of extended shear tabs was
completed by testing 23 full-scale specimens. Both unstiffened and
stiffened extended shear tab specimens were tested that varied in
plate thickness, plate depth, and the number of horizontal bolt
lines. The specimens were tested by rotating the beam to 0.03
radians, applying a horizontal load, and then applying vertical
load until failure. The horizontal loads varied from 500 kN in
compression to 200 kN in tension. Based on the test results, design
recommendations were made for both unstiffened and stiffened
extended shear tabs. The recommendations include strength equations
for bolt group design and plate design, while connection ductility
is addressed by ensuring the plate will fail prior to bolt or weld
rupture.

The dimensioning of shallow foundations requires the professional to define clearly and objectively, for the soil in question, the load capacity and forecast the settlings of the foundation submitted to the structure having as base its mechanical properties obtained through field and/or laboratory investigation. One of the safest ways to take this decision is based on information from plate load tests because through this it is possible to reproduce in a minor proportion the real behavior of the future foundation, perhaps using this as a tool to help in the decision making to dimension shallow foundations, contributing to a more efficient development of the foundation work. The present work is about the analysis of the CEEG/UFSM soil behavior through tests on direct load proof on foundation field (plate load test). The research is divided, basically into two great phases. There was an experimental phase which comprehended geotechnical characterization trials and plate load tests to evaluate the behavior tension-settling of foundation. There were 7 plate load tests in 3 ditches dug manually up to 0,7 m depth. Plates with 15, 30 and 50 cm diameter were used and the reaction system was formed by reaction piles united by a reaction beam. The second phase was the analysis of the results obtained, analyzed through curves tension-settling of foundation, where some criteria were applied to define the rupture tension and some considerations were done on the settling of…

The aim of present research was to study the mechanical behavior of unreinforced and fiber-reinforced unsaturated sand through plate load tests carried out at relative densities of 50% and 90%. For the reinforced sand, 50 mm long polypropylene fibers were added at a concentration of 0.5% by dry weight. The analysis of the plate test results indicates that the soil load-settlement behavior is significantly influenced by the fiber inclusion. The best performance was obtained for the densest (DR=90%) fiber-sand mixture, where a significant change in the load-settlement behavior was observed. Triaxial tests were also carried out in order to establish the strength and deformation parameters of the materials studied. Furthermore, suction tests were carried out to investigate its potential influence on the strength parameters of the unsaturated fiber-reinforced and unreinforced materials.

Most of all petroleum produced in Brazil is encountered in marine deposits where the water depth may exceed 1000 meters. Recent discoveries of new offshore oil fields have motivated studies in this area designed to develop new techniques applied to oil exploration. For the extraction of oil deposits floating platforms are commonly used, supported by anchorage systems on the seabed. This work examines a new technique for installing anchors for offshore oil platforms, that can work as alternatives or complement to existing techniques, and consists of applying water jets to remove…

The civil engineering rules itself by the security guarantee and the functionality of the constructions that are designed and built. To fulfill those requirements, during their useful life, it is necessary to proceed to the conformity assessment between the structural real behavior and the original assumptions of the project, in the end of the construction or during the reinforcement or the rehabilitation.
This thesis has as aim the structural understanding and analysis behavior of the bridge over the Sorraia’ s river, trough the realization of loading tests, supported by a numerical model properly calibrated, able to simulate the structure response closest to the actually observable.
To achieve the objective predefined, the relevant methodologies are listed, the types of load tests performed on bridges are described, and the measuring devices which are the basis of the model instrumentation are refered. This introduction also focuses on numerical modeling, allowing the basic knowledge necessary…

▼ Mechanical properties of concrete are most commonly determined using destructive
tests including: compression, flexure, and fracture notch specimen
tests. However, nondestructive
tests exist for evaluating the properties of concrete such as ultrasonic pulse velocity and impact echo
tests. One of major issues with concrete (which has cement as its prime ingredient) is that unlike steel it is quasi-brittle material. It tends to want to crack when tensile stresses develop. Fibres have been added to concrete for many years to reduce the amount of and size of cracks cause by temperature changes or shrinkage. In more recent years, significant research has been carried out into the effect of the addition of basalt fibres to cement has on its mechanical strength. As well, developing concrete that is more durable, flexible, stronger, and less permeable than traditional concrete has been explored. It has become important to test and verify improvements that are made to the cement by basalt fibres as well as testing the general strength of concrete to stand up to constant pressure at varied strengths.

▼ Previous studies have shown that a uniform distribution of
load may increase the shear strength of a slender member by as much as 40 percent (Leonhardt and Walther 1964). The increase of shear strength is potentially due to clamping stresses induced from the uniform
load, although a mathematical equation to quantify the effect of clamping stress in slender uniformly loaded members has yet to be derived (Acevedo et al. 2009). Only a small percentage of all shear
tests on slender specimens without shear reinforcement were completed with uniform
load. Additionally, the majority of uniform
load data consists of specimens with small specimen depths (d) and large longitudinal reinforcement ratios (ρ). Six shear
tests on specimens without shear reinforcement were completed at the University of Texas at Austin. Three of the six specimens were subjected to concentrated
load, and the remaining three companion specimens were loaded uniformly. These specimens are among the deepest slender members without shear reinforcement that have ever been tested under a uniform
load distribution. Importantly, the ratio of maximum shear to maximum moment was maintained between concentrated and uniform
load tests which ensures directly comparable
tests results. The experimental results were shown to be influenced by
load distribution. Uniformly loaded specimens had an average increase in first diagonal cracking shear capacity of 17 percent with a range of increase between 10 and 23 percent when compared with specimens subjected to concentrated loads.

▼ Stemming from a tragic failure of an adhesive anchor system, this research project investigated the sustained
load performance of adhesive anchors in concrete under different installation and in-service conditions. The literature review investigated the current state of art of adhesive anchors. Extensive discussion was devoted to the behavior of adhesive anchors in concrete as well as the many factors that can affect their short-term and sustained
load strength. Existing standards and specifications for the testing, design, construction, and inspection of adhesive anchors were covered. Based on the results of the literature review and the experience of the research group, a triage was conducted on many parameters identified as possibly affecting the sustained
load performance of adhesive anchors and the highest priority parameters were investigated in this project. A stress versus time-to-failure approach was used to evaluate sensitivity of three ICC-ES AC 308 approved adhesive anchor systems. Of the various parameters investigated, only elevated in-service temperature and manufacturer’s cure time was shown to exhibit adverse effects on sustained loads more than that predicted by short-term
tests of fully cured adhesive over a reasonable structure lifetime of 75 years. In a related study, various
tests were conducted on the adhesive alone (time-temperature superposition, time-stress superposition, and dogbone tensile
tests). The results of that study were used to investigate the existence of a correlation with long-term anchor pullout testing in concrete. No consistent correlations were detected for the adhesives in the study.
Tests were also conducted on the effect of early-age concrete on adhesive anchor bond strength. On the basis of confined test bond-strength alone, adhesive A (vinyl ester) did not show any significant increase after 14 days (102% of 28 day strength at 14 days), and adhesive B and C (epoxies) did not show any significant increase after 7 days (104% and 93% of 28 days strength at 7 days respectively). The results of this research were used to draft recommended standards and specifications for AASHTO pertaining to testing, design, construction, and inspection of adhesive anchors in concrete for transportation structures. These draft standards were not included in this dissertation. ( en )

▼ Though uniform loading is common in structures, the vast majority of all shear strength
tests on slender reinforced concrete members without stirrups have been performed using concentrated loading. Furthermore, the uniform
load tests that have been conducted typically involve members with smaller specimen depths (d) and larger reinforcement ratios (ρ) than are commonly used in practice. Previous studies usually agree that a noticeable increase in shear strength can be expected when a specimen is subjected to uniform loading as opposed to concentrated loading.
Six shear
tests were performed on four slender beams without stirrups at The University of Texas at Austin. Two of the specimens had approximately double the effective depth (d) as the other two. For a given depth, two concentrated
load tests were carried out on either end of one specimen, and one uniform
load test was carried out on the second specimen. Thus, four reinforced concrete beams were used to perform a total of four concentrated
load tests and two uniform
load tests, with the objective of determining the influence of
load distribution as member depth (d) increases. To ensure that a direct comparison could be made between each
load distribution, the ratio between maximum bending moment and maximum shear force was maintained for all
tests. Additionally, to provide consistency with typical design practice, the reinforcement ratio (ρ) was selected to match that of a typical beam.
The experimental results presented an influence of
load distribution opposite to that of previous studies, with a range of increase in shear strength at first diagonal cracking of concentrated
load tests of -16 to 50 percent, with an average increase of 18 percent, over uniform
load tests. Additionally, the
tests with smaller effective depths (d) saw a percent increase in shear strength of 31 to 68 percent, with an average increase of 50 percent, over
tests with larger effective depths (d).

▼ Offshore wind farms have the ability to meet the energy demands of the USA four times over, and are located offshore where less turbulent, high-speed winds can generate electricity efficiently. The most popular option for offshore foundations are monopiles, which are characterized as large diameter steel pipe pile suited for relatively shallow depth (20 – 30m) so they have a large aspect ratio (length divided by diameter or L/D) of between 3 and 8. The most common design methods for laterally loaded monopiles rely on p-y curves, which were developed for relatively small-diameter and slender piles and might not be suited to predict the behavior of larger diameter and smaller L/D ratios. In order to evaluate the suitability of p-y curves to predict the
load – displacement behavior of laterally loaded monopiles a consistent laboratory testing methodology to perform 1-g lateral
load tests in sand was developed. The aim of this research is to compare the results from the 1- g lateral
load tests to compared to the predictions of a newly developed 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis as well predictions from the American Petroleum Institute (API), which utilizes the p-y method. A repeatable and consistent methodology to conduct a large number of 1-g lateral
load tests in sand using spheres to model the state of stresses around a monopile for varying sphere diameters and embedment depths was developed. The sand was characterized by its dynamic properties, which were used as input parameters for the 3D FEM analysis. A total of 50 1-g model
tests were conducted and analyzed. The results indicate that the 3D FEM is able the non-linearity in initial stiffness if accurate dynamic properties are used. Additionally, p-y were not able to capture the initial non-linearity in the
load – displacement behavior and underestimated the initial stiffness for all
tests.

Nowadays, electric motors are responsible for about 30 % of global electric energy consumption. Taking into account that three phase induction motors are spreading worldwide, its efficiency has a deep impact on world’s electric energy consumption.
Therefore, new methodologies for a higher accuracy in the efficiency of these machines are extremely important.
In the European Union (EU) efficiency and losses determination of rotating electrical machines, is based on IEC 60034-2-1 standard, published in 2014. This standard includes different test methodologies, both direct and indirect. For the last ones, convencional losses are calculated in a similar way. However, different approaches are considered for stray load losses: basically, the main diferences between indirect methods rely on stray load losses estimation.
In this work, four methods from IEC 60034-2-1 standard were selected in order to compare the efficiency levels of two induction motors of 1.1 kW, with different efficiency classes.

▼ Šio darbo tikslas buvo nustatyti kvėpavimo
pratimų įtaką ŠKS funkcinių rodiklių kaitai, atliekant fizinio

medžiaga. Pirmame tyrime – dalyvavo 12 įvairių sporto šakų atstovų
(7 lengvaatlečiai, 2 boksininkai, 2 krepšininkai, 1 dziudo
imtynininkas). Šiame tyrime mes lyginome EKG rodiklių reakciją į du

investigation the arterial blood preasure was measured. Besides
using the computer based EKG registration and analysis system
“Kaunas-krūvis”, electrocardiograms consisting of 12 standard
points were also recorded. The second investigation focused on 12
people who do not exercise actively. These group of people
performed breathing exercise. During this investigation EKG and AHR

evaluated by the sportsmen themselves as an easy physical load, the
investigated people at the beginning of the exercise were breathing

person is too attentive for the correct performance of the test,
that is why he or she overdoes and holds the breath). This has a
significant influence for the CS reactions, which is an object of

The increasing use of floating platforms for oil exploration activity has required development of studies related to new techniques and methodologies for foundation design in the marine environment. This research is the continuation of the work of Rocha (2014) and aims: to study the attenuation of dynamic loads in buried mooring lines through experiments in reduced scale models in clay deposits. The tests were performed in the laboratory from a system of dynamic loading that is able to produce vibration within desirable ranges of acceleration and frequency. The concepts of dynamic loading, rheology and thixotropy are discussed in order of…

▼ Bacterial bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major healthcare problem causing high mortality and economic cost. BSIs require an immediate initiation of antibiotic therapy as any delay is associated with a mortality increase. With the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, the choice of the appropriate antibiotic becomes increasingly difficult, thus creating an urgent need for new diagnostics, ideally to be done at the point of care. The current gold standard is blood culture with subsequent susceptibility testing although several molecular methods have recently entered the market. However, in many instances there is a discrepancy between the in-vitro data provided by the test and the outcome of antimicrobial therapy in-vivo because current diagnostics fail to take into account the impact of the environment in the patient such as the immune system, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics or bacterial fitness. In this thesis, it was hypothesised that the measurement of the bacterial gene expression after the beginning of antibiotic therapy might be a more accurate indicator of the therapy outcome because it reflects the bacterial response under in-vivo conditions. In the first part of the thesis the expression of a set of pre-defined mRNA markers was investigated under various conditions. Experiments conducted with clinical E. coli isolates incubated in human whole blood revealed an excellent correlation between the gene expression, the treatment outcome, the antibiotic susceptibility and the genetic background for three different classes of antimicrobial drugs. The second part of the thesis describes the extraction of bacterial RNA from human whole blood specimen. The effect of different agents for the lysis of human blood cells and the impact of co-purified human RNA were analysed and a method for high yield extraction of undegraded bacterial RNA was established. The third part of the thesis investigates two methods for the sensitive measurement of the bacterial gene expression. This is relevant because the bacterial loads in BSI patients are extremely low. For genes with high gene expression levels both methods yielded reliable results but were unable to quantify the expression of the previously investigated mRNA markers due to their low copy numbers. Other approaches, especially those based on single cell measurements, might be able to overcome the problem in the future and should be explored in greater detail. Overall, the foundations for a future diagnostic test based on the measurement of the bacterial gene expression have been laid in this work. Future work should address the mRNA quantification and further evaluate the connection between gene expression and therapy outcome, e.g. in animal models. A future diagnostic test should also fulfil point-of-care requirements. This will include integrated sample preparation and quantification as well as a time-to-result in the range of a few minutes.

▼ Nowadays, many different efficient solutions are being studied to solve engineering problems. Inside this group of solutions we can find the Soil Steel Composite Bridges (SSCB) as an alternative to traditional bridges. SSCB are being used more often every day and they are showing themselves as competitive structures in terms of feasibility and constructability. This project was started to achieve two different goals. The first one was to create a general database of SSCB including few selected tests all around the world and the second one was to compare and discuss full scale tests using the Pettersson-Sundquist design method. To create the database and the following comparisons, twenty-five different full scale tests were used. From this tests all the necessary information was extracted and used to create the database. After creating the database, the project continued with the discussion and comparison of the full scale tests. Specifically those discussions and comparisons were related to the resistance of the soil (the soil modulus) used in the construction of the SSCB. All the values of the different soil modulus of each full scale test used in the comparisons were calculated using the Swedish Design Manual (SDM). Two different types of soil modulus were calculated in this project using SDM, ones are the soil modulus back calculated using the values reported from the live load tests performed on the culverts and the others are theoretical soil modulus calculated using the detailed information of the soil. The report continues with the explanation of the different conclusions ended up with during this project. It can be highlighted within this group of conclusions, the one related to the importance of reporting all the necessary information from the full scale tests including the soil parameters, the measures of the culvert, the cross sectional parameters and the vehicle dimensions among others. Another important conclusions are the effect of using the slabs over the top of the culvert and how it would effect to the sectional forces over the culvert and also the limitations using method B of the SDM regarding the type of soil used as backfilling Finally, the project finishes explaining some proposals for future research about other fields of the study of SSCB.

▼ Large-capacity helical piles can provide immense construction and performance advantages over the conventional concrete and steel piles. Nowadays, there is significant interest in using large-capacity helical piles to support foundations that would be subjected to both dynamic and static loading.
The main objectives of this thesis are to: investigate the dynamic response and impedances of large-capacity helical piles; develop an analysis methodology for their dynamic response; and investigate their static axial compression and lateral behaviour, considering installation effects on their dynamic and static performances. The thesis presents the first full-scale vertical and horizontal dynamic field testing program executed on large-capacity helical piles, which involved 190 full-scale field load tests on nine instrumented large-capacity helical piles and two driven steel piles with different geometrical configurations installed in cohesive soils. Six piles were tested two weeks after installation and four piles were tested after allowing a recovery period of nine months following installation.
One hundred and seventy six field experiments were conducted to evaluate the dynamic response characteristics of single helical piles and driven piles under different levels of vertical and horizontal harmonic excitations. The effects of various parameters, namely: pile length, number of helix plates and inter-helix spacing, excitation intensity, and soil thixotropy on the dynamic response were investigated. The experimental results were compared to the theoretical predictions of the continuum theory considering linear and nonlinear approaches. Reasonable match was found between the predicted response using the nonlinear approach and the measured response for both vertical and horizontal vibrations. The results demonstrated the significant effects of pile installation on forming weak soil zone around the pile, which stiffened with time following installation. This stiffening was manifested in an average increase in pile stiffness of about 43% and in pile damping of 25 to 90% within a nine month period. In addition, the dynamic response of the helical piles was similar to that of the driven piles.
The load transfer mechanism of large-capacity helical piles was found to be predominantly through the helical plates and pile toe end bearing. Based on the results of the pile load tests, it is proposed to define the ultimate load of helical piles as the load that corresponds to pile head movement equal to the pile elastic deformation plus 3.5% of helix diameter. The helical piles displayed a superior axial performance with capacities higher than driven pile by about 17 to 85% based on pile configurations.
The effects of attached helices and inter-helix spacing were found to be negligible on the pile lateral capacity and performance. The lateral pile load tests were examined numerically using the p-y approach incorporated in LPILE program. The mobilized soil shear strength parameters and soil moduli of subgrade reaction were…

▼ In current reliability based design practice for deep foundations, AASHTO specifies resistance factors for a multitude of design methods, foundation types and levels of field verification (e.g.,
load testing) . These resistance factors are based on specified target reliabilities and are calibrated using data bases of measured versus predicted resistances. A limitation of this calibration is that it does not account for the particular degrees of variability of design parameters that can be encountered within different sites (i.e., homogeneous versus heterogeneous sites).

▼ Topic of this bachelor thesis is the recherché and following deformation-stress analysis of the race car safety cage. This thesis is divided into three parts. The first one is about the introduction of analysis itself and the FIA regulations for homologation static
load tests of the race car safety constructions. The second part describes analytical and numerical approach to the deformation-stress solution of a main arch in historical formula 1 car Ferrari 1512. The outputs of these two approaches which were then compared to determine their accuracy and result verification. On this example was executed the contact analysis which was applied in the last part of the thesis. After receiving the results and conclusions from the basic example, the last part deals with the real safety frame model of Subaru Impreza Sti N15. This chapter presents the most important part of the thesis. On the model were executed three static test simulations which have to comply with FIA regulations. The task was solved with FEM modeling.

Na základě zkoušek a provedených výpočtů byla stanovena únosnost panelu a určeno kritické místo pro návrh panelu, kterým se ukázala stojina I-nosníku, který je součástí panelu.; The goal of thesis was to find new type of bridge deck panel made of fibre reinforced polymer and determine its
load capacity.
Load capacity of panel was determined on the basis of experimental and analytical work. Experimental part of work was consisted of material

▼ “A diaphragm is a transverse stiffener, which is placed between girders in order to maintain section geometry”, (AASHTO, 2002). Intermediate diaphragms, usually placed at the midspan or third points of a bridge, are thought to contribute to the overall distribution of live loads in bridges. Cast-in-place concrete intermediate diaphragms were investigated in this study in order to assess their load distribution effectiveness in prestressed concrete I-girder bridges. Finite element packages (Ansys and GT STRUDL) were used to perform the analyses for multiple bridge configurations, including a parametric study of span length, girder spacing, and concrete strength. It was found that intermediate diaphragms do not contribute significantly to live load distribution and that they are not needed if there is no possibility of impact by an over-height truck. If the risk of a lateral collision to the girders is present, intermediate diaphragms should be placed over the respective traffic lane so that the potential impact takes place at the diaphragms location. Temporary steel diaphragms can be used to stabilize girders during construction. Static and Dynamic live load tests were performed and experimental results were compared to the finite element analysis. Various pavement roughnesses were simulated with the use of wood boards up to 1.5” in depth. A dump truck, driven at 30 MPH, 38.5 MPH and 40 MPH, produced strains and deflections which were processed for load distribution and dynamic allowance (IM) factors. According to the results obtained, there is a more uniform live load distribution as the speed and roughness increase. However, driving at 40 MPH over the 1.5” wood board produced an impact factor almost twice as large as the one specified by AASHTO LRFD (2004). Finally, nonlinear analyses of the tested bridge were performed in order to predict its ultimate capacity. Two bridge configurations were analyzed. The first one was modeled without any diaphragms or edge stiffeners, while the second one with end diaphragms and edge stiffeners. Ultimate loading results show that AASHTO LRFD presents conservative values.

▼ A study was performed to investigate the factors that affect the accuracy
of the procedures used by the Virginia Department of Transportation for
design of drilled shaft sound wall foundations. Field
load tests were
performed on eight inch and nine inch diameter drilled shafts, and the
results were compared to theoretical solutions for ultimate lateral
load
capacity. Standard Penetration
Tests were run in the field and laboratory
strength
tests were performed on the soils from the test sites. It was
found that published correlations between blow count and friction angle
for sands and gravels can be used to estimate friction angles for the
partly saturated silty and clayey soils encountered at the test sites.
A spreadsheet program was developed to automate the process of determining
design lengths for drilled shaft sound wall foundations. The spreadsheet
was used to investigate the effects of different analysis procedures and
parameter values on the design lengths of drilled shaft sound wall
foundation.

▼ Grouting of deep foundation subsequent to installation hasbecome popular due to its effectiveness in improving axial capacity underserviceable displacement. Post tip grouting of drilled shafts has beensuccessfully employed worldwide to mobilize a significant portion of tipresistance under small displacements. Recently, Florida Department ofTransportation developed a new jetted and grouted precast pile system and theconstruction of the pile utilizes the advantages of several proven deepfoundation installation techniques. This research focused on the individual and group behaviorof jetted and grouted piles and tip grouted drilled shafts in cohesionlesssoils. Experimental study and numerical modeling of both types of foundationswere performed to investigate the response in individual and group scenario. Basedon the study, a methodology for jetted and grouted piles that predicts expectedgrout pressures during grouting, unit side and tip resistance and theload-displacement response of the pile is proposed. In case of post grouteddrilled shafts, thestudy found that the increased axial capacity under serviceable displacementsdepended mainly on preloading effects and the increased tip area provided bythe grouting process. A simple prediction approach for estimating the tipcapacity of grouted shafts utilizing cone penetration resistance was suggestedbased on the results of the study. The validity of the proposed approach wasverified by the analysis of full-scale case studies of grouted shafts reportedin the literature. The experimental group study at 3 x pile/shaft diameter (D) center-to-centerspacing revealed that the jetted and grouted piles behaved as a block duringaxial loading, whereas the post grouted drilled shafts acted independently ofone another, i.e., negligible group interaction. It was also identified thatthe side grouting of a foundation prior to tip grouting has a substantialinfluence on improving the axial capacity. The side grouting was found to significantlyincrease the grout pressure developed during tip grouting and helps in theformation of tip grout bulb by spherical cavity expansion process and thusimproves the unit tip resistance of the foundation. ▼ To better manage deteriorating infrastructure, quantitative data about the performance of infrastructure assets is required. Rayleigh based distributed fibre optic strain sensing (FOS) is a technology that has the potential to offer this type of data and unlike traditional strain sensors it can measure the strain along the full length of the structure.
A series of experiments were undertaken to develop installation techniques and evaluate sensor accuracy for typical civil engineering materials: steel, concrete and reinforced concrete. The results of these experiments showed that the choice of sensing fibre and adhesive was dependent on the material being monitored. When the sensing fibre and adhesive are chosen correctly, the Rayleigh system can provide the same accuracy as a strain gauge for steel and concrete, and useful measurements can be obtained even in areas of concrete cracking.
The FOS technique was utilized to determine whether distributed strain measurements could be used to detect and quantify localized deterioration of the steel reinforcement (localized area reductions of 0-30%) at service loads. A series of specimens was tested, the sensing system was able to detect the presence of localized deterioration with embedded nylon and polyimide fibres, but the nylon fibre cannot quantify large strain gradients due to slip within the sensing fibre. The strain profiles gave insights to the failure mechanism occurring in the reinforced concrete specimens. The strain profiles for both test series indicated that the tension reinforcement was acting as a tension tie and the strain profiles suggested the presence of compressive struts indicative of an arching mechanism in the specimens.
The Black River bridge in Madoc, Ontario was instrumented with fibre optics sensors to determine whether the use of FOS is both practical and beneficial for reinforced concrete bridge assessment when compared to conventional instrumentation. The FOS showed reasonably good agreement with conventional sensors. The fibre optic strain results are used to calculate curvature, slope and displacement but careful consideration of the boundary conditions is required. The results from the fibre optic sensors can be used to show the bridge load distribution and give insights into the support conditions of the beams.

Objectives: To evaluate dyspnea perception in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients compared with normal subjects, during inspiratory resistive loading and the six-minute walk test (6MWT). Secondarily, to assess the correlation between dyspnea scores induced by resistive loads and those induced by the 6MWT. Methods: cross-sectional study in patients with CF (≥15 years old) and normal subjects. Volunteers underwent inspiratory resistive loading, measurement of maximal respiratory pressures, spirometry, nutritional evaluation, and the 6MWT. Results: Thirty-one CF patients and 31 paired normal subjects were included in the study. As the magnitude of the inspiratory loads increased, dyspnea scores increased (p<.001), but there was no difference between groups in dyspnea score (p=.654) and no group interaction effect (p=.654). SpO2 was lower in CF patients (p<.001) and increased as the magnitude of the loads increased (p<.001), with no…
