▼ This study deals with the editorial problems inherent in the representation of late fourteenth century manuscripts. Anthonello de Caserta’s ballata, Più chiar che’l sol, first edited in the multi-volume series Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century (volume X) is an example of a late fourteenth century song extant in two partially damaged manuscript sources which, due to the large amount of music requiring transcription by the editor, did not receive the level of attention necessary for a correct rendition. Furthermore, the critical apparati appended to each volume of such series is – as in the case of the critical notes for Più chiar che’l sol – far from helpful in helping the reader understand editorial decisions made in the transcription process. Combined with the lack of critical information in the layout of the transcription in a series such as Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century, the critical apparatus can obscure rather than illuminate editorial solutions to transcription problems. \tCreating a new transcription of Più chiar che’l sol for comparison with the 1977 edition by Thomas W. Marrocco in volume X of the Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century series reveals editorial decisions extracted form the critical apparatus which have resulted in substantial errors. Through a close examination of Più chiar che’l sol’s manuscript sources, Marrocco’s readings of are corrected and reconstructions of trimmed manuscript sections are suggested. \tAs a response to the lack of editorial transparency inherent in the critical apparati found in series of medieval music such as Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century, a new transcription of Più chiar che’l sol offers a layout which includes manuscript variants parallel to the music, as well as transcription notes where clarification is needed for particular editorial features. Furthermore, more extensive variants are appended to the transcription reproducing original notation from both manuscript sources.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is an in-depth analysis of the Eddic poem Grímnismál found in the manuscript known as Codex Regius (GKS 2365 4to), located in Reykjavík, dated to c. 1270 and a fragment (AM 748 I 4to), located in Copenhagen, dated to c. 1300. While a great deal of work has been done on Grímnismál as part of the Elder Edda, there is yet no specific edition focusing on it alone. New studies on Germanic paganism and mythology show its shifting nature and the absence of specific tenets or uniform beliefs throughout the Germanic speaking world and in time. The relatively absent sources are similarly scattered. As such, the thesis suggests a new method of study, following a focused historical approach in which only Grímnismál is analysed in an attempt to understand the beliefs of the people that composed it. The nature of pagan belief itself prevents one from drawing more general conclusions on ‘Norse mythology’ as a whole. Part 1 is divided into two chapters and deals with my approach, the nature of Germanic belief, and the sources available as well as techniques of interpretation for them, all relevant to the production of the arguments made in the thesis. Part 2 deals with Grímnismál itself: Chapter 1 provides an analysis of the manuscripts, Chapter 2 contains my editing notes and Chapter 3 analyses the contents of the poem, Chapter 4 consists of my conclusions to this study, focusing on the cosmology and the dating of the poem. Part 3 contains the edition of Grímnismál and is followed by Part 4 which is the commentary to the poem. The thesis is followed by two appendices, one containing a facing transcription of the manuscripts and the other being a glossary to all words used in Grímnismál. A peça Doubt, a Parable (2004) de John Patrick Shanley revisita o mundo que ele conheceu quando criança – o bairro do Bronx dos anos 1960. A história se desenrola em uma comunidade escolar católica ítalo-irlandesa e o enredo diz respeito a uma dúvida – que se transforma em crença – por parte de uma das personagens, Irmã Aloysius, a diretora da escola. Ela acredita que o Padre Flynn esteja molestando sexualmente o único aluno negro da escola. A peça é uma construção em aberto, que permite a cada leitor/espectador construir sua própria interpretação dos fatos. Além de ser o autor da peça, Shanley também transformou seu texto teatral em roteiro para o cinema, e atuou como produtor da peça e roteirista e diretor do filme Dúvida, de 2008. Nesta dissertação examino as estratégias utilizadas por Shanley para manter a possibilidade de interpretação aberta quando ele traduz sua obra para mídias diferentes – na página, no palco, no cinema. Ao empreender tal análise, considero pertinente explorar padrões contemporâneos sobre questões como verdade, dúvida e certeza, porque as mesmas encontram-se imbricadas com o construto artístico examinado, favorecendo assim um olhar atento sobre o papel do autor e do leitor nesse processo. Para investigar as construções ideológicas que definem os elementos de dúvida e certeza, utilizo o conceito de Paradoxo do Imaginário, como proposto por Castor Bartolomé Ruiz (2003), dando especial atenção às questões relacionadas com o simbolismo da dúvida, tal como pode ser percebido na obra de Shanley.

John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt - a Parable (2004) revisits the world he knew as a child, which is the Bronx of the 1960’s. The story centers upon a Catholic Irish-Italian school community, and the plot relates to a doubt - that grows into belief, and ends up as certainty - on the part of Sister Aloysius, the principal of the school, who is persuaded that Father Flynn, the vicar, has been harassing the only Black student in the school. The play is an open-ended construct, allowing each reader/spectator to build their own interpretation of the facts implied. Shanley is more than the author of the play. He has also worked as the producer of the play on the stage and he turned the story into a movie screenplay, Doubt, and has worked as a director to the movie. In this thesis I examine the strategies used by Shanley to keep the possibility of interpretation open as he translates his own work into different media, on the page, on the stage and on the screen. As I do that, I also consider the contemporary standards regarding issues as truth, doubt, certainty, especially as they constitute themselves aesthetically in the fictional world, thus reexamining the role of the author and the role of the reader in the process. So as to investigate the ideological constructions that define the elements of doubt and certainty I refer to the concept of “paradoxes of the imaginary” as proposed by Castor Bartolomé Ruiz (2003), with special attention to questions concerning the symbolism of doubt as perceived in Shanley.

▼ Ephesians 6:11 calls upon readers to, ‘[p]ut you on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil.’ This dissertation puts this verse at the center of devotional practice in thirteenth- to fifteenth-century England by showing that books and stories were often perceived as that very armor. Just as St Boniface reportedly held up a scriptural manuscript at his moment of martyrdom to protect himself from the sword, medieval readers saw their books, and the texts contained within them, as spiritual and physical protection against devilish attacks. Not only were texts adapted and manipulated by redactors for defensive reading, the form of the manuscripts themselves encouraged their readers to treat them as allegorical, even literal, shields. In order to evidence this reading practice, this dissertation explores the transmission history, textual content, and cultural contexts of two Middle English verse texts. Part I shows how ‘O Vernicle,’ a fourteenth century lyric on the arma Christi (the ‘arms of Christ’), exemplifies the ritualistic nature of defensive reading. Extant in ten rolls and ten codices, the textual presentation encourages the reader to imaginatively arm themselves with the arma Christi, turning those weapons once used against Christ into their ‘armor of God’ (Eph. 6:11). Part II focuses on the late thirteenth-century collection of sanctorale and temporale entries known as the South English Legendary. It deals predominantly with an early reader of the collection – a redactor whose ‘edits’ transformed the historical trajectory of the South English Legendary, imbued it with a defensive purpose, and shaped the way it was recopied through the fourteenth and fifteenth century. The content of both texts, made up of image/text arma Christi units and hagiographic vitae and temporale respectively, divide and compartmentalize the reading experience. This suits the defensive agenda, allowing the reader to collect ‘textual shields’ as spiritual armor. Putting on the Armor of God defines a widespread cultural practice – ‘defensive reading.’ It demonstrates not only that medieval readers consciously read certain devotional Middle English texts in order to defend themselves against spiritual evils, but also that they were copied and redacted with this purpose in mind. Ultimately it shows that, in the later Middle Ages, reading was a way of putting on the ‘armor of God’ (Eph. 6:11). Os primeiros textos do escritor inglês George Orwell consideram o apelo do ideário comunista, ao passo que seus dois últimos romances, A Revolução dos Bichos (publicado em 1946) e 1984 (publicado em 1949) se contrapõem radicalmente a esse regime. Ao longo da segunda metade do século XX, foi-se estabelecendo a mística de uma forte ligação entre a obra de Orwell e o histórico do regime comunista, de modo que, com a queda do Comunismo, o desinteresse pelo assunto parece haver provocado uma diminuição no conceito dos méritos do escritor. O argumento da presente dissertação é que estamos frente a um momento nevrálgico no desenrolar da fortuna crítica de George Orwell, no qual a leitura alegórica feita até aqui deve ser substituída pela leitura simbólica, para que os textos do autor possam transcender à derrocada do movimento Comunista, sustentando-se na estética de sua literariedade e na atemporalidade de seu apelo ético. Em outras palavras, não é o texto de Orwell que precisa ser mudado, e sim, o ângulo de abordagem daqueles que constroem a fortuna crítica do autor, pois as referências temporais desgastadas diminuem a potencialidade interpretativa das obras. Um ponto comum que permanece, e que transpassa a obra literária de Orwell, é a opressão exercida por quaisquer sistemas políticos que possam ter atitudes consideradas totalitárias. Esta observação não remete apenas ao sistema comunista, mas também ao imperialista, ao autocrático, e até mesmo ao democrático. Orwell demonstra que um sistema não é totalitário por si só, mas através de suas atitudes em relação ao povo. Se, na época de seus lançamentos, a temática totalitária foi relacionada ao comunismo, tomando-se os textos como alegorias irreversíveis do discurso anti-comunista, a queda daquele regime, ou sua gradual abertura a práticas capitalistas, não basta para condenar as obras de Orwell ao anacronismo, descartando maiores possibilidades interpretativas. Ao propor uma releitura de A Revolução dos Bichos e 1984 substituindo as referências ao comunismo por qualquer tipo de prática totalitária — e concentrar o foco das observações no que é simbólico, ao invés de alegórico — acredito estar cumprindo minha parte neste processo de resgate da fortuna crítica de um escritor que considero ser um dos mais honestos e competentes de seu tempo.

The first texts of the English writer George Orwell approach the appeal of Communist views; however, his two last novels, Animal Farm (published in 1946) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (published in 1949) radically oppose this regime. A investigação do romance Girlfriend in a Coma permitiu perceber alguns elementos centrais que estruturam a obra como mito e paródia. O mundo ficcional é caracterizado por uma sociedade à beira de um colapso devido a sua incapacidade de mudar seu comportamento e sequer consegue perceber o que está errado. Na narrativa são utilizados recursos estéticos identificados com o realismo maravilhoso, pois, juntamente com a descrição de eventos coerentes com a racionalidade humana, há eventos sobrenaturais realizados pelo divino. Nesta narrativa, a ideologia do trabalho árduo como estruturador da vida em uma sociedade democrática e capitalista é esfacelado em vista dos terríveis efeitos sentidos pelos personagens: trabalho extenuante, drogadição, anorexia e individualismo. Com o uso de teoria da narrativa e pós-modernista, argumenta-se que este romance é um ‗mito do novo mundo‘ ao fazer uso da paródia como forma de contestar meta-narrativas, e ao propor novas cosmogonias baseadas na experiência pós-colonial Canadense.

The investigation of the novel Girlfriend in a Coma revealed some central elements that structure this work as myth and parody. The fictional world is characterized by a society incapable of changing its behavior or even realizing what is wrong with it. In the narrative some aesthetic resources are used which are related to magic realism because, along with the description of events coherent with human rationality, there are supernatural events performed by the divine. In this narrative, the ideology of hard work as the main structure of life in a democratic capitalist society is unveiled, taking into account some terrible effects felt by the characters, such as: overworking, drug addiction, anorexia and individualism. With the use of narrative theory and postmodernist theory, it is argued that this novel is a ‗new world myth‘ because it makes use of parody as a way to refute masternarratives and to suggest new cosmogonies based on the Canadian post-colonial experience.

▼ My dissertation focuses on the intersection of the discourses of space and place, art, religion, and politics in poetical accounts of heaven. My study investigates how authors deploy these various traditions to create a heaven that accommodates the needs of a particular audience. Heaven is, according to Yi-Fu Tuan, a "mythical place," which cannot be located. To avoid the problems of a "mythical place," we represent that location with slightly-blurred experiential knowledge or communally-sanctioned practices. The creation of heaven, I argue, does not occur ex nihilo but through a refashioning of knowledge and practices to engage audiences with descriptions of heaven. To examine this concept, I primarily analyze the descriptions of place in Pearl and Piers Plowman, while providing discussion of Paradiso, The Vision of Tnugdal, and episodes from the writings of Hadewijch that offer competing and complementing visions. This study offers an opportunity to view heaven not as simply a consistent and monolithic feature of society but as a created site. Rather than examining heaven solely as art, or only through doctrinal concerns, heaven must be considered in terms of a variety of discourses. The layering of art, politics, religion, and space and place remind readers of the medieval religious project. God, for the medieval, was not an abstract ideal but an ever-present quality of their daily existences; as God could be seen in all facets of life, so too can heaven be seen through aspects of life that seem mundane and removed from ethereal experience. The first chapter of The Creation of Heaven in the Middle Ages outlines the problem of considering heaven as a monolithic entity. By tracing the history of heaven, the chapter demonstrates that we cannot view heaven as outside of time and place; heaven responds to the needs of particular audiences. As such, heaven cannot be considered only a religious place; heaven is a place that depends upon the engagement of multiple ideas, including theories of space and place, art history, and politics. The second chapter investigates the places of the afterlife in Pearl and Piers Plowman. While similarities exist between the two, each text offers a striking vision of the afterlife; and while a cityscape, and a besieged church and tower evoke distinct impressions of heaven, the chapter examines how each of these visions forces the reader to wonder if heaven might be a viable end. The third chapter engages in how the aesthetic choices of heaven work to create meaning within the mind of the reader. The larger goals of medieval aesthetics, embodied in stained-glass windows, reflect the projects of Pearl and Piers Plowman, namely to teach through a series of highly colored and instructive scenes. The final chapter offers a view of heaven through the political atmospheres of Ricardian England, reflecting the various choices of that monarch that impacts not only earth but also the heavenly retinue. This thesis is the first systematic examination of the textual and material evidence for diseaseand hunger in Carolingian and early Ottonian Europe, c.750 to c.950 CE. It draws upon medieval textual records including annals, capitularies, chronicles, concilia, correspondence, histories, gesta, poetry, polyptychs, secular biographies, and vitae, as well as numerous modern archaeological, palaeobotanical, palaeoclimatic, palaeomicrobiological and palaeopathological reports in order to comment on epidemics, epizootics, food shortages and the baseline or current of non-pestilential disease and chronic hunger underlying them. It first surveys the historical and scientific scholarship on these phenomena and the methodologies intrinsic to their study. The evidence for non-pestilential and chronic hunger is then addressed, before pestilences and food shortages are identified in time and space. We can discern roughly thirty-two peacetime epidemics, ten epizootics, ten famines and twelve lesser shortages. A short investigation of the impact of, and response to, disease and hunger in Carolingian and early Ottonian Europe is presented in conclusion. The thesis demonstrates that disease and hunger, in both endemic and epidemic forms, were common realities for mid eighth- through mid tenth-century continental European populations, and argues that epidemics, epizootics and subsistence crises had major, short-lived but possibly cumulative, repercussions for Carolingian and early Ottonian demographic and, consequently, economic growth, in addition to intensifying the impact of the silent toll of the baseline of non-pestilential disease and chronic hunger. The textual evidence addressed in the thesis is presented in Latin and English in three appendices.

Cette thèse est le premier examen systématique des sources textuelles et matérielles concernant la maladie et la faim en Europe carolingienne et ottonienne, entre le milieu du VIIIe et le milieu du Xe siècle. Elle s'appuie sur des sources textuelles, comprenant des annales, capitulaires, chroniques, actes de conciles, la littérature épistolaire, les oeuvres historiques, les gesta, la poésie, les polyptyques, biographies laïques et vies de saints, ainsi que de nombreux rapports archéologiques, paléobotaniques, paléoclimatiques, paléomicrobiologiques et paléopathologiques récents afin d'expliquer les épidémies, épizooties et pénuries alimentaires, de même que le problème fondamental de la faim, qu'elle soit la conséquence de maladies non-pestilentielles ou de maladies chroniques sous-jacentes. Medieval narrative accounts of female misbehaviour reflect deep social perceptions and expectations grounded in ideas of gender. The women described in the twelfth-century non-fiction narratives analysed in this thesis had not behaved in an objectively "bad" way, judged by legal or moral standards. Rather, the disapproving depiction of women's behaviour reflects the author's concern with the women's goals and intentions, rather than their specific actions. In all the episodes I analysed, I found a search for autonomy and independence from social and cultural control on the part of the women. It is this wilful desire for autonomy that incurs the medieval authors' disapproval. The first chapter focuses on marital choice, one of the few areas of medieval social life in which young women could express a certain degree of independent judgement in spite of familial, social, and cultural constraints. I argue that female resistance to outside pressure is often depicted in exaggerated misogynistic tones. On the other hand, female behaviour which inspires the approval of an author is often transposed into masculine characteristics. In the second chapter, the focus shifts to widowhood. In narrative depictions of widows, the deep connection between the exercise of female autonomy and medieval misogynistic discourse emerges. Medieval perceptions of gender necessarily rested on the core concept of female subordination as natural and necessary to social organization. Actions that challenged this assumption were invariably cast in a negative light. Widows seeking to sever the ties that bound them to male guardians are represented in highly critical terms.

Les comptes rendus narratifs médiévaux du mauvais comportement des femmes sont profondément ancrés dans des perceptions sociales et des attentes qui découlent de notions du genre. Les femmes décrites dans ces récits non fictifs du douzième siècle et qui font l'objet de ce mémoire n'ont pas eu un mauvais comportement selon les normes légales ou morales de l'époque. Ce sont les objectifs et les intentions des femmes, plutôt que leurs gestes précis qui figurent comme source d'inquiétude dans ces textes. Dans tous les épisodes analysés, j'ai découvert une quête d'autonomie et d'indépendance des femmes par rapport aux contrôles social et culturel. C'est ce désir volontaire d'autonomie qui suscite la désapprobation des auteurs médiévaux. Le premier chapitre est axé sur le choix matrimonial, un des rares domaines de la vie sociale médiévale où les jeunes femmes pouvaient exprimer un certain jugement indépendant en dépit des contraintes familiales, sociales et culturelles. This dissertation demonstrates that the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer and John Lydgate joined nonliterary medical texts in transporting medical discourse into the English language and culture. In the later-fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the production of Middle English medical and literary texts increased dramatically. These categories overlapped at the site of medical verse. I show that authors of imaginative fiction also wrote what is in effect medical verse by employing medical discourse in stand-alone poems and in passages embedded in longer works. As Chaucer and Lydgate became central in an emergent national literary canon, their texts––and the medical content they contained––enjoyed an especially broad circulation. Thus Chaucer and Lydgate participated in the Englishing and popularization of medical discourse. In the General Prologue and linking narratives of the Canterbury Tales, Chaucer satirizes academic medicine by means of its own discourse––what he calls the "termes of phisik"––and in the context of a larger thematic exploration of healing and illness in post-Black Death England. In the Knight's tale, Chaucer includes a miniature verse treatise on lovesickness (amor hereos), which, despite its brevity and satiric quality, draws learnedly from contemporary medical theory, in effect constituting one of the best-known technical works on the subject in Middle English. Lydgate's Dietary, a verse regimen of physical, spiritual, and social health, was one of the most widely circulated Middle English poems. It has been overlooked and misunderstood by scholars, however, because they have neglected to consider the poem's complex relationship with its sources and analogues and often refer to a highly unrepresentative edition of the text. By locating Chaucer's and Lydgate's creative uses of medical discourse within their textual and historical contexts, I offer new readings of their poems and reconstruct their respective roles in English medical history.

Cette thèse se propose de démontrer que la poésie de Geoffrey Chaucer et de John Lydgate s'allie à des textes médicaux non littéraires dans le processus de passage du discours médical dans la langue et la culture anglaises. Vers la fin du quatorzième et au quinzième siècle, la production de textes dans les domaines médical et littéraire en moyen anglais a augmenté de façon spectaculaire. Ces catégories de textes se sont toutefois chevauchées en regard avec la profession médicale. ▼ At the end of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, when Bertilak de Hautdesert reveals Morgan le Fay’s involvement in Gawain’s quest, the Pearl Poet introduces a difficult problem for scholars and students of the text. Morgan appears out of nowhere, and it is difficult to understand the poet’s intentions for including her so late in his narrative. The premise for this thesis is that the loathly lady motif helps explain Morgan’s appearance and Gawain’s symbolic importance in the poem. Through a study of the loathly lady motif, I argue it is possible that the Pearl Poet was using certain aspects of the motif to inform his story. Chapter one of this thesis will focus on the origins of the loathly lady motif and the literary origins of Morgan le Fay. In order to understand the connotations of the loathly lady stories, it is important to study both the Irish tales and the later English versions of the motif. My study of Morgan will trace her beginnings as a pagan healer goddess to her later variations in French and Middle English literature. The second chapter will discuss the influential women in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and their specific importance to the text. It will examine Queen Guinevere, Bertilak’s lady and Morgan le Fay. This chapter will also analyze three contemporary Middle English texts: John Gower’s The Tale of Florent, Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Wife of Bath’s Tale, and “The Weddyng of Syr Gawen to Dame Ragnell.” The loathly lady motif was popular at the end of the fourteenth century, which lends evidence to the argument that the Pearl Poet was familiar with the motif. Finally, the third chapter will provide an exploration of Gawain’s role as the loathly lady’s knight and the symbolism of Gawain’s shield and green girdle, the setting of Hautdesert and the Green Chapel, and the Pearl Poet’s emphasis on family relations. Ultimately, I argue that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an untraditional loathly lady story that uses the motif’s themes and symbolism to emphasize the poem’s feminine landscape and the importance of Morgan le Fay. This dissertation examines the effects of maternal figures in the texts of the Auchinleck manuscript to create a better understanding of the how the collection was communicating with its female audience. The religious contexts that foreground the arguments herein are the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 and the Cult of the Virgin Mary, both of which had everyday implications for the laity. The Auchinleck manuscript, a large miscellaneous compilation, was likely compiled between 1330 and 1340 in or near London. The prevailing theory of ownership suggests that the volume was compiled under the patronage of a buyer who intended to use it in his manorial household. This framework of readership implies that women of different social statuses may have had opportunities to interact with these texts, and thus the lessons these women gleaned would be rather general, appealing to pious ideals. In the middle ages, women were categorized into three spiritual estates: maiden, wife, and widow, and of these three, virginity was valorized as the optimal state for spiritual purity, with widowhood being ranked the second best estate. For the many women in the middle ages who could not choose the path of virginity, which often meant joining a monastic community, their next best option was to get married and bring Christian children into the world. The maternal figures in the texts examined here present several models of behavior for women, encouraging them to participate in a community of Christian maternity. Through the sacrifice of their bodies, these readers are told, they can access spiritual glory. The first chapter focuses on a cluster of four extant opening texts in the manuscript to discern how maternity, literacy, and inscription together can result in mass conversion. The second chapter considers the affect upon the reader of the many narratives of the Virgin Mary and their neighboring texts. The juxtaposition between Mary, the apex of Christian femininity, and less perfect women provides accessible models of behavior for women susceptible to sin. The third chapter considers the Breton lay Sir Degaré as a case study for the issues of incest and abandonment that preoccupied the Church in the Middle Ages. The fourth chapter analyzes Lay Le Freine as a locus for the maternal community, bringing together a biological mother, a midwife, a wet nurse, and an abbess to raise a child in the Christian community.

▼ One of the earliest examples of Notre Dame polyphony is a manuscript that for the past forty years has been considered the product of several scribes working in St Andrews, Scotland (Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Bibliothek Cod. Guelph 628 Helmst., (W1)). Twenty years ago, the discovery of two contemporary liturgical sources from St Andrews further established the origin of W1 in St Andrews during the episcopacy of William Malveisin (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, fonds latin 12036 and 1218). This dissertation demonstrates that the Francophile Bishop Malveisin commissioned the impressive collection of music in W1 as part of a liturgical campaign. Malveisin also built a college of secular canons, called Céli Dé because of the ancient royal Celtic religious order from which some members were recruited, to perform the grand ceremonial in W1 in order to increase the international prestige of the Scottish cathedral. The first chapter argues that, contrary to previous assumptions, the Augustinian canons were not the recipients of W1, but rather the Céli Dé, who were aristocratic Scottish-Norman clerics with university educations. In Chapter 2, my paleographic and codicological study lays the foundation for a biography of the scribe of W1, demonstrating that one documentary scribe copied both the text and music of the whole manuscript. In Chapter 3, I trace the editing work of that scribe in the music and in the collection of polyphony and monophony providing insular ordinary tropes of various styles for the cathedral liturgy. The fourth chapter, offering the first analysis of the antiphoner for the Céli Dé, (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, fonds latin 12036), finds it better suited to the Notre Dame polyphony of W1 than Edward Roesner found the Uses of Sarum and York in his study. The final chapter argues that the polyphony in W1 contributed to the prestige of the new Gothic cathedral dedicated to the patron saint of Scotland, St. Andrew. This precious witness to the various ways of ornamenting the liturgy in the thirteenth century, inspired by polyphonic performances at the cathedral of Notre Dame, was produced as a testament to the great importance and power of the Apostle to the Scots. Após séculos sob a dominação inglesa, a Irlanda vivenciou uma forte demanda por restauração e consolidação de sua própria identidade política e cultural no final do século dezenove e início do século vinte. James Joyce tentou suprir a necessidade irlandesa de uma (re)construção de identidade e a mistura de mitologia e realismo em seus trabalhos foi sua tentativa de fornecer auto-conhecimento para seu povo. Essa dissertação investiga em que sentido a jornada de formação de um artista, desenvolvida em A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, metaforicamente faz um paralelo com a saga do herói clássico a fim de investigar as escolhas feitas por Joyce no que diz respeito aos arquétipos mitológicos com seu propósito e influência no trabalho do autor. Essa análise baseia-se na pesquisa de quarto campos: o contexto histórico irlandês, a biografia de James Joyce, elementos mitológicos e características importantes do romance de Joyce no que diz respeito à estrutura e construção de sentido. Ao compartilhar as características do herói, o protagonista do primeiro romance de Joyce eleva a condição do artista ao papel de salvador, redentorum verdadeiro herói para sua comunidade por revelar o caminho da iluminação através da literatura. Portanto, Joyce revela que o caminho para o auto-conhecimento é uma busca universal, tornando seus trabalhos uma reflexão que não é limitada por tempo, lugar e cultura.

After centuries under British domination, Ireland experienced a strong demand for the restoration and consolidation of its own political and cultural identity in late nineteenth and early twentieth century. James Joyce tried to fulfill the Irish need for identity (re)construction and blended mythology and realism in his works and, by doing so, he made an attempt to provide self-awareness to his people. This thesis investigates in what sense the journey of formation of an artist, developed in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, metaphorically parallels the journey of the classic hero in order to investigate Joyce s choices regarding mythological archetypes and its influence on and purpose in his work. This analysis relies on the research of four fields: Irish historical context, James Joyce s biography, mythological features, and relevant features of Joyce s novel in the realms of structure and construction of meaning. By sharing the features of a hero, the protagonist of Joyce s first novel elevates the condition of the artist to the role of savior, redeemer-a hero to his community for revealing the path to enlightenment through literature. Therefore, Joyce reveals that the path to self-awareness is a universal search, making of his works a reflection unrestricted by time, place, and culture.

James Joyce é um dos escritores mais famosos do século 20, sendo sua obra muito comentada por leitores e acadêmicos, especialmente devido ao alto nível de complexidade de Ulisses e Finnegans Wake, os romances da fase madura. O foco da presente dissertação, todavia, são os primeiros livros de Joyce que, apesar de serem mais acessíveis ao público em geral, também contêm toda a elaboração linguística e simbólica que caracteriza o autor. Trato especificamente do volume de contos Dublinenses e do romance Um Retrato do Artista Quando Jovem, utilizando para análise deste o suporte oferecido pelo outro romance anterior, não publicado em vida, Stephen Hero. O objetivo da pesquisa é investigar aspectos presentes na prosa de Joyce que revelem a formulação e a aplicação de sua teoria estética. Como a cidade de Dublin surge como uma metáfora sobre as circunstâncias de ser irlandês, interessa ao leitor adquirir alguma familiaridade com a cultura e a história daquele país e com as relações existentes entre os irlandeses e sua terra natal, especialmente no que tange às questões sobre religiosidade e sobre a dominação inglesa. A dissertação vem estruturada em quatro capítulos. O primeiro apresenta James Joyce tanto como pessoa quanto como escritor em formação, nascendo e crescendo em Dublin na virada dos séculos XIX e XX. São analisadas as influências exercidas pelo contexto católico de sua criação e pela crise social e econômica enfrentadas tanto pelo país quanto pela família do autor. O segundo capítulo lida com Dublinenses, o conjunto de contos que apresenta a visão de Joyce sobre a cidade de Dublin. Esses contos podem ser lidos individualmente, mas a obra assume um significado maior quando considerada de forma unificada em termos de linguagem, simbologia, estratégias narrativas e objetivos, em um plano de evolução que abrange fases da infância, da adolescência, da maturidade e da vida pública. As personagens compartilham características comuns: paralisia, falta de perspectivas e incapacidade de entender ou de reagir aos fatores históricos e sociais que os colocam naquela posição. Entre tais fatores predominam três, a cultura católica, a dominação inglesa e a inabilidade das pessoas para reagir de maneira criativa e produtiva aos problemas que se apresentam. O terceiro capítulo analisa a evolução do fazer artístico de Joyce a partir do binômio Stephen Hero e Um Retrato do Artista Quando Jovem, tendo como elemento comum a ideia do Künstlerroman. No quarto e último capítulo, apresento um comentário sobre as marcas de individuação de Joyce em relação a alguns de seus contemporâneos que também tratam sobre questões envolvendo arte, história e tradição.
