▼ The study is based on the anthroponomastics approach and investigated the significance of Oshiwambo combat names for the People Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) freedom fighters during the armed liberation struggle for Namibia’s independence. There is no comprehensive study that focused on the origin and significance of Oshiwambo combat names, hence, this study was conducted to investigate the significance, origin and meanings of Oshiwambo combat names for the former PLAN combatants. In addition, the study investigated the motive behind these names and the role they played during the Namibian liberation struggle. The study adopted two theories. The first theory is that of Brunner and Kellner (1989) which deals with the liberation from all forms of oppression, animated by commitment of freedom, happiness and a rational ordering of society. This theory enabled the analysis of techniques of persuasion and communication behind names and how they reinforced the evolutionary mood, providing motivation and boosting their morale in the struggle towards independence. The second theory is Frege and Russel’s (1975) descriptive theory of reference, which postulates that the meaning or semantic content of proper names is identical to the descriptions associated with it by the speaker. This theory helped in understanding the meaning of a name and to understand that the association between a name and its associated description is established by the speaker of a language of a certain speech community. The study employed the qualitative design which helped the researcher to analyze the combat names provided by the former PLAN combatants. Both purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used to select the sample of hundred names. The names were presented and analyzed into different categories. The study revealed that the former PLAN combatants named themselves and their names played a significant role during the liberation struggle. Also, the names helped to conceal their identities and protected them from enemy agents or informers. The combat names inspired and encouraged them in many ways, for instance, to face war challenges such as hunger, thirst and working long distances. The study contributes to the onomastics understanding, and it provides a large corpus of combat names that could be used for further research. Suggestions for further research are made based on the female combat names which are few.

▼ This study investigates the literary portrayal of children as participants of the liberation struggle as illustrated in Ellen Namhila’s The Price of Freedom and Lydia Shaketange’sWalking the Boeing 707. The focus of the study was to investigate how the two Namibian autobiographical texts represent children in the liberation struggle. It examines whether children are portrayed as agents in the liberation struggle or simply objects of pity and victims in the exilic environment. The study was primarily a qualitative, desktop research whereby two Namibian authored autobiographies were purposefully selected and analysed. This analysis was informed by post-colonial theory as a theoretical framework. Post-colonial theory deals with the reading and writing of literature written in previously or currently colonised countries, or literature written in colonising countries which deals with the colonisation or colonised people. It focuses particularly on the way in which literature by the colonising culture distorts the experiences and realities of, and inscribes the inferiority of the colonised people. On the contrary, the colonised’s attempts is to articulate their identity and reclaim their past which they were robbed of by the colonisers. The study contributes to the creation and dissemination of knowledge since it addresses contemporary overarching issues such as that of the children of the liberation struggle which appears to be a controversial issue in Namibia today. The study also contributes to the body of knowledge which seeks to acknowledge the efforts of previously disadvantaged people such as children. It also recognises the innovativeness and agency of children as represented in the autobiographical work of Shaketange and Namhila. The findings in this study revealed that children appear to be active agents and subjects of the liberation struggle, the study debunks the portrayal of children as passive victims of the exilic environment only as it is portrayed in some literary and academic texts. Although at some point they tend to suffer victimisation and the brutality of the struggle, the children characters in the autobiographies have proven agency by taking part in activities that enable them to attain independence, for instance, the maintenance of the camps, working as teachers and material developers, and as nurses. It has further been revealed that children are intelligent and perseverant beings. Implicitly, they are portrayed as compassionate, assertive, full of endurance, as well as heroes of the exilic environment. Through these findings, the study seeks to elucidate the disagreements of the literary representation of ‘children as objects’ in some literary and academic texts. The study then intends to re-vision the representation of children as opposed to the representation already existing in canonised literary texts, and this fulfils the goal of the post-colonial theory. ▼ In a world still marked by the effects of colonial displacements, slavery's auction block, and the modern observatory stance, can Christian theology adequately imagine racial reconciliation? The thesis pursues this question by surveying several important new contributors to this discussion, comprising the Duke Divinity school of theological race theory. Willie James Jennings and J. Kameron Carter investigate the colonial genesis and Enlightenment maturation of the racial imagination to suggest a new path for Christian theology. The thesis' main project is mapping the theologies of Carter and Jennings in order subsequently to display the doctrinal positions they share. Chief among them is their insistence that supersessionism, which they understand as the various forms taken by the quest of Christians through the centuries to sunder themselves from the particularity of Israel, has been constitutive of a racialized hierarchy which continues to hold powerful sway over Christology, anthropology, and ecclesiology. Their shared theses are positioned between – and beyond – the poles of modern liberalism and “traditioned” orthodoxy. The Introduction to the thesis demonstrates the theological difficulties faced by contemporary pursuits of ecclesial reconciliation. Chapters One and Two investigate Carter's work, positioning his account between black liberationist thought, as exemplified by James Cone, and recuperations of scholastic orthodoxy, as exemplified by John Milbank. Chapters Three and Four interact with Jennings' work, positioning his thought between cultural studies, especially related to late medieval colonial theology, and contemporary virtue ethics, as refracted through Alisdair MacIntyre and Stanley Hauerwas. Building upon Jennings' and Carter's Christological insights, the Conclusion proposes a sympathetic extension of their ecclesiology of joining. Drawing on the theological race theory presented in the thesis and contemporary experiments in racial reconciliation, the conclusion engages theological treatments of eating together in order to display the ecclesiological importance of this more robust theology of race.

▼ Although the ethics of Theatre of the Oppressed are grounded in popular education and social transformation, their practice in the United States has become greatly de-politicized and isolated within the Academy. Additionally, community based-organizations often focus on single-issue, immediate needs through the provision of direct services, without creative explorations for long-term solutions. During my nine month collaboration with the Youth Justice Coalition in Los Angeles, we sought to rebuild the connections between art-making and social activism through the use of liberation arts, specifically Theatre of the Oppressed, in order to build community capacity to investigate, understand, and respond to root causes of oppression. ❧ Our collaboration focused on the FREE LA High School, a continuation school for formerly incarcerated youth, run by the Youth Justice Coalition. Our relationship began with three months of participant observation at the site, followed by the co-creation and facilitation of a four-month Introduction to Theatre of the Oppressed course to be piloted at FREE LA. ❧ This paper focuses on the intersections between the Theatre of the Oppressed Joker, the Participatory Action Researcher, and the Community Organizer by analyzing the process of this collaboration. I suggest that these connections encourage a re-examination of power dynamics in Theatre of the Oppressed practices, the development of a more nuanced understanding of trauma and its effects on community formation in the United States, and a commitment to peace building and conflict resolution through long-term collaborations. ❧ Such an approach allows us to develop the Theatre of the Oppressed Joker from the ruins of the social and political climate facing marginalized populations around the world, in order to re-politicize our work in the field of transformational arts, while supporting communities in accessing their creative capacities for art-making and celebration in the struggle for liberation. ▼ Businesses in Swaziland have been somewhat cushioned against the impact of world trade liberation and least as far as home and regional markets are concerned (Ministry of Enterprise and Employment, 2005: 18). The country's position with the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) affords temporary protection against the competition felt by economies elsewhere in Africa. Furthermore, with limited domestic markets, export-oriented industries are the backbone of Swaziland's economy (Thompson, 2010:19). Trade vibrancy caused by globalisation, health standards requirements and other factors has started affecting export industries. It is therefore, important that the businesses in Swaziland prepare for more intense competition in the future. This could be achieved through improved management and improved productivity which would then enhance competitiveness. The decrease of foreign direct investment in the agricultural sector, the removal of trade preferences among top export industries (sugar, textile), decrease in demand for export products (as a result of economic downturn), indicates that there is a problem of competitiveness in the Swaziland agribusiness sector. Therefore, the objectives of the study are; to determine the constraining and enhancing factors of competitiveness of the agribusiness sector of Swaziland and to develop the strategies to improve competitiveness of the sector. A structured questionnaire adapted from the Agricultural Business Chambers (ABC) of South Africa was used to collect the data through face-to-face interviews. Porter's (1998) theory for the determinant of competitive advantage was used as a base in designing the questionnaire in order to capture the constraining and enhancing factors influencing competitive advantage. The target group comprised decisionmakers (chief executive, managing directors) for agribusiness firms, including in the following industries: dairy, sugar, animal feed, maize, livestock and poultry, textile. The data was analysed using the statistical package for social science (SPSS) and was presented in tableau and figure format. The scale of classification used when analysing the determinants of competitiveness was; a mean score of 1 meant constraining competitiveness success; a mean score of 3 meant moderate effect and a mean score of 5 meant enhancing competitiveness success. Most of the determinants [factor (2.72), demand (2.64), related and supporting industries (2.29), chance (2.46) and government conditions (2.48)] were constraining competitiveness. The top three factors contributing to this are: unavailability of professional labour (1.63), costs of inputs and supplies (1.69), incompetent (1.69) and ineffective public sector personnel (1.88) and small local market size (1.88). The only determinant that has the ability to enhance competitiveness is the firm's strategy, structure and rivalry conditions, as indicated by a moderate mean score of 3.38. ▼ In the early 1960s, Canon Clinton R. Jones, Jr. of the Episcopal Church, assigned to Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford, Connecticut, became concerned about the plight of homosexuals and transgendered people. Alarmed by stories of the discrimination, violence, and social and spiritual alienation suffered by sexual minorities, Jones founded Project “H,” a subcommittee of the Greater Hartford Council of Church’s Social Welfare Committee to address these problems. Jones also sought to educate himself on the subject of homosexuality, and collected an immense library of books, pamphlets, and periodicals related to the subject. While providing practical help to members of sexual minorities, Jones also formulated his own theological response to homosexuality. Heavily influenced by concerns for social justice, his theological stance was a forerunner of the twenty-first century approach of the Episcopal Church of the United States. During the 1960s, Jones’s experiences helping sexual minorities in Hartford mirrored much of what was happening in the “homophile movement” throughout the United States. Before the advent of the term “gay rights,” which itself was part of the growth and increased visibility of homosexuality as a national community, homophile organizations worked to try to improve the lot of homosexuals while still maintaining relatively discreet. By studying Jones’s work, and his correspondence with members of the homophile movement, we can follow the progress of gay rights during the 1960s until the explosive Stonewall Inn Riots in June of 1969, and beyond into the 1970s, a decade of highly visible and hotly contested battles for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and Gifford – 4 transgendered people. In the 1980s, the battle continued, but with a new sense of urgency as the AIDS epidemic spread throughout the community. Clinton Jones witnessed much of this through his work in the Hartford area. After his retirement in 1986, he donated his library and Project “H” papers to the Gender Equity Collection at Elihu Burritt Library of Central Connecticut State University. His papers, including the minutes from Project “H” meetings, reports from the George W. Henry Foundation (a social welfare group in New York city), correspondence with members of the homophile movement, and manuscripts of Jones’s books and articles, reveal much about the struggle for gay rights from the 1960s through the 1980s in Hartford and beyond. ▼ This thesis focuses on Sydney’s inner-west and is a critical ethnography of radical, critical and dissident activism across more than four decades, from the Gay Liberation and Lesbian Feminist movements to contemporary queer and critical social and political networks. The methods use Alberto Melucci’s (1995) collective identity as a ‘lens’ of social movement analysis in a synthesis with a resource mobilisation approach (after Joe Foweraker 1995). They include a new, full analysis of the 1978ers Social History Project survey (Abello 1998), a reconstructed participant-observation of the Gay Liberation Quire (1981-7) and relational interviews with contemporary activists, with participation in their fields of action. The methodology is “post-queer”, acknowledging Adam Green (2012), distinguishing, between radical/liberal homosexual normalisation and a new, neoliberal homonormativity and sexual politics (as per Lisa Duggan 2003 and Diane Richardson 2004), and between homonormativity and queer counternormativity, empirically, in the context of their respective historical elements, economic relationships and places. The methods all involve participation, an insider position and are relational (in the past and the present, including with extant 78ers and Quire members). The ethnographic focus in each method is on a mobilisation or collective action: the motivations and predispositions of activists; the multiplicity of movement parts and historical and contemporary elements in each time (politics and sexual politics); the collective identity and normativities of the social networks in which they are embedded; the various and changing intersections with other social movements and political networks and groups; the changing (and bifurcating) spaces of movement and community; and the multiplicitous responses and reconfigurations of movement parts around emergent communities, changes in social and economic relations and relationships with the state. Conservative governments and neoliberal policies have impacted on activists’ resources and figured their concerns while gay and lesbian equality politics drives a queer-gay divergence and bifurcation of spaces.

▼ This dissertation investigates the mission established by the Detroit Province Capuchins in eastern Nicaragua from 1939-1979. Its emphasis is a transformation in the missionaries’ ministry enacted in 1967, which involved the adoption of new experimental techniques. The central historical contention is that this transformation led to the creation and diffusion of liberation theology in Nicaragua. The revisionist portrait of liberation theology emphasized here challenges existing understandings of the way this religious movement arose throughout Latin America. The dissertation contends that the overlapping socio-political movements of the “Long Sixties” (1959-1973) destabilized the ideas about Catholicism and the priesthood that the Capuchins had championed in Nicaragua since the 1930s. This period cast them into a crisis that climaxed in 1967. Dozens of other missionaries in Latin America experienced similar vocational crises. A small subset of the missionary community, however, did not respond to the events that shaped the Long Sixties with bewilderment. These pioneering priests instead utilized experimental pastoral methodologies to reinvent the priesthood for the unique demands of the setting. The Capuchins, and many of their peers, turned to these experimentalists as a way of resolving their vocational crisis. In this way, early experiments, which would later be formalized and systemized as liberation theology, proliferated on an ad hoc basis across Latin America. The Capuchins borrowed techniques from their peers and modified them to fit their unique circumstances. In particular, they borrowed three practices. First, from Leo Mahon, a missioner from Chicago to Panama City, they adopted the Delegates of the Word. The Delegates initiative involved training local laymen to act as surrogate priests. From the Society of Foreign Missions in Choluteca, Honduras, the Capuchins imitated the Celebration of the Word, a reinvention of the mass characterized by group discussion of biblical passages. Finally, from the Brazilian theorist Paulo Freire, the Capuchins enacted the pedagogy of the oppressed and enshrined “conscientization” as the primary goal of their mission. Over the next decade, these practices evolved into a rigorous, coherent system, the missionary pedagogy of the oppressed, a nascent form of liberation theology. ▼ The IPCC and UN FAO have both suggested a global reduction in meat consumption to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But how do nations and citizens resolve tensions between ecological stewardship and meat consumption? What is implied in eating meat and raising livestock in a country where the historical imaginary yokes national values to the pig-producing countryside? To answer these questions, this dissertation examines how climate change is affecting meat consumption and production logics in Denmark. Though the country has a reputation for progressive environmental policy, its formerly large agricultural sector continues to exert disproportionate political influence, and many citizens consider pork its most "traditional" food. In 2016, a publicly-funded advisory council issued a report suggesting that parliament pass a beef tax to reduce consumption and reflect its environmental impact. The report was the most controversial the council had ever issued, with members receiving angry phone calls and politicians arguing the council should be disbanded. The proposal put national tensions between sustainability and agriculture in full view, and it became clear that such a tax would not be passed. Based on 16 months of fieldwork with meat industry workers, food innovation NGOs, environmental activists, and animal rights advocates, this dissertation explores how stakeholders in the meat-climate debate produce and enact knowledge; while industry scientists used quantification as a stand-in for making ethical claims, NGOs attempted to make new environmental subjects through educational eating programs and pressure campaigns to increase availability of plant-based foods. These efforts are contrasted with activists who work directly with animals, whose work is biopolitical and affective. All actors claim to be in favor of "environmental sustainability" but are governed by conflicting internal regimes and motivations. What emerged was a hydra of anxieties not just about climate but human-animal relationships in general, that I call "hyperanimal." Advisors/Committee Members: Howe, Cymene (advisor).

▼ Since the last half of the twentieth century, Christian theorists, theologians, biblical scholars, philosophers and ethicists have been struggling, in varying degrees, with the increasingly pressing issues that have arisen from a planetary environmental crisis and a growing inequality and persistent poverty afflicting the majority of human beings. They have tried to reconcile these emergences with discoveries from science about how our world functions, and traditional affirmations of their faith. The struggle has been daunting, marked by a litany of concerned voices that argue that one or more of the issues or facets of the debate require greater attention. In this dissertation, I investigate the writings of four Christian thinkers: Rosemary Radford Ruether, Leonardo Boff, Diarmuid O'Murchu and Thomas Berry. These authors attempt to integrate, to varying extents, environmental concerns, liberation thought, scientific discovery and traditional precepts of their faith. These thinkers, I argue, are greatly facilitated in their integration of all these aspects by the particular epistemic framework they employ when engaging their faith and science in a communal conversation. I label this framework "convergent knowing," characterized by a close and seemingly continuous relationship between these two significant ways of knowing. I suggest that "convergent knowing" could serve as a model for other Christian thinkers who are currently struggling to integrate ecology, justice, science and their faith. Evidence for this is found within the collective work of the four authors I examine, which reveals an emerging ethical vision that seeks liberation for the human and the other-than-human. I further argue that "convergent knowing" adds a new and important dimension to the religion-science debate, one that does not seem to be adequately represented by current leading typologies representing the religion-science nexus. The dissertation concludes by suggesting that there might be a larger civilizational paradigm shift occurring that underlies a growing convergence of Christianity and science. Characterized by relationality, this new paradigm is shaping how scholars currently approach science, ecology, ethics and religion. ▼ Born out of the fiery evangelism and bold risk-taking of the Radical Reformation, today's Mennonite Church USA has become risk-averse in local, congregational mission. In the past two decades, there has been a movement by Mennonite leaders to shape a missional Church. Some of the stories that continue to be told may undermine these efforts, while stories that may encourage risk-taking in mission have been under-utilised in Anabaptist theology, ecclesiology, and missional literature. This thesis argues for a new Anabaptist theology of risk-taking, developed around stories of a risk-taking God and utilising a methodology that promotes change through engagement with the behavioural and social sciences and dialogue with theological voices from the margins of the Church. Part one provides a survey of Mennonite mission, which identifies initial risk-taking behaviours and shows how, over time, the early Anabaptist inclination to take risks in evangelism has diminished in response to the threat of persecution and the building of an insular, homogenous community. In the stories that Mennonites have traditionally told about God in theology and missiology, images of a risk-taking God are largely absent. In response to these findings, this thesis articulates a correlational method of liberation designed to facilitate change in the theological stories of the Mennonite Church. In conversation with social and behavioural sciences, vulnerability is identified as the nature of risk, community as the courage for risk, creativity as an essential energy for risk, failure as an unavoidable consequence of risk, and love as the ethical barometer of risk. Literature on risk in the church provides additional themes of relationality, sacrifice, love, creativity, vulnerability, and failure. In light of these themes, this thesis argues that common stories in the Mennonite Church around the divinity of Jesus and the importance of suffering for the faith mask the vulnerability of ordinary, everyday risk, including the risk of being changed. If the Church is not open to being transformed in our encounters with the 'world,' then stories of the Spirit's unpredictable work will be limited in their efficacy. If we are unreceptive to the Spirit, we will remain unconnected to the Trinity, a relationship which offers us safety and community for risk-taking. Without this narrative of reunion with God, we are cut off from the source of motivation for risk-taking in mission: God's overflowing love. The stories we tell in our churches weaken our efforts to be transformed into congregations who take risks in mission for the sake of love. Part two begins the process of re-storying Anabaptist theology by constructing a new narrative built upon the story of a God who takes the risk of being radically present to a vulnerable world. By sharing in our vulnerability, Jesus breaks down barriers to the Spirit's energies in and around us, so that we may share together in God's life. ▼ Preliminary tests were performed to determine the efficiency of electric pulse disaggregation (EPD) technology on ore mineral liberation, from the surrounding gangue material on a wide range of ore deposits types. In addition to processing using EPD technology, samples were scanned using X-ray computed tomography (XRCT). All the collected data were then used to characterize the ore particles in novel ways. The samples in this investigation came from the following deposit types; a liquid-magmatic deposit that represents Si-differentiation, liquid-magmatic deposits that represent immiscible sulfide melts, porphyry deposits, VHMS deposits, an MVT deposit, and an SSC deposit. Ten samples from different ore deposits were processed in a SELFRAG EPD machine. The samples were then fractionated by sieving where a grain size of -250 µm to +150 µm was chosen for constructing grain mounts. The grain mounts were scanned in an SEM using mineral liberation software where the percentage of ore that had achieved liberation was used to evaluate the efficiency of the EPD process. Solid portions of all the samples that were not disaggregated were scanned in an XRCT. Data from these scans were then processed as raw numerical information or processed using 3D visualization software. The results from EPD efficiency display a wide range of possibilities, anywhere from no liberation to values as high as 97%, with most samples displaying good liberation percentages in the high 60% if the null liberation values are ignored. Null liberation values were ignored because it was discovered, through analysis of ore grain size data exported from XRCT scans, that the in-situ ore grain size was greater than that of the material selected for the grain mounts. This realization informed the decision to ignore these null values when calculating the average liberation of all samples. By using data acquired from XRCT scans, three useful techniques were employed that have the potential to aid in future studies of ore bodies. 3D reconstructions of scanned cores allowed for the identification of micro-structures such as; planar mineralization pathways that were sub-100 µm thick, possible shear surfaces expressed as abrupt planar terminations of ore occurrences, and interruptions in stratigraphically controlled ore that may have been important fluid migration pathways for the movement of ore-bearing fluids. Shape analysis graphs were constructed comparing the long and short axis information exported from XRCT scans. The results of these graphs revealed that most samples contained roughly equal proportions of spherical and elongate ore grains, but a sample from a liquid-magmatic Si-differentiation deposit was much more spherical in its ore morphology while a sample from an SSC deposit was the most elongate in morphology. Finally, vector graphs were constructed that illustrate the long axis orientation of ore grains in-situ within scanned samples.
