▼ Abstract: This Doctoral research was conducted in the Brazilian city of Angra dos Reis, located in Rio de Janeiro state, and it investigated the issue of leisure among its inhabitants as associated with the growth of the second home business. The concept of the second home is considered problematic because it covers many variables, such as the distribution, the characteristics, the function, the planning aspects and the social impacts. In current studies Brazilian researchers have been working within the definition of a 'second home' as a residence with a minimum length of occupancy and proof of the possession of two residences. In the case of Angra dos Reis, this concept was not adequate to understand the impacts of this business on the leisure of the inhabitants. The main reason rests on a particular type of second home established in Angra dos Reis called 'gated communities', a type of residence that conjures images of "a residential area with restricted access [¿] with walls or fences, and controlled entrances that are intended to prevent penetration by non-residents. Mainly, these types of second home have been constructed around desirable natural amenities (beaches, waterfalls and forests) in Angra dos Reis, and have been sold on the basis of the exclusive natural spaces guaranteed by the second home market. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between local residents and second homeowners. Using the ethnographic method, the researcher conducted opportunistic sampling in a specific neighborhood called Frade. The study revealed the genesis and the function of the social networks of locals and second homeowners, but also those of the council and state office representatives, the administrative body of the gated communities and NGOs. The framework theory used in this research drew on the concepts of: 'second homes'; social capital; gated communities; locality; symbiotic and opposite relationships. ▼ Professional golfers are frequently in the media spotlight as they compete in high profile tournaments around the world. Behind this „shop window‟ there is a vast industry in which several thousand „golf professionals‟, members of the Professional Golfers‟ Association [PGA] are engaged, delivering a wide range of services which support those who play the game of golf at every level. Golf education itself has been through many changes as the industry has been professionalised. Formal preparation of new golf professionals commenced in 1961 with the introduction of „voluntary‟ training, after which professional education became mandatory. The next four periods: „compulsory‟ 1970-1979, „consolidation‟ 1980-1986, „development‟ 1987-1995 and „academy‟ 1996-2007, each built upon the previous as the curriculum, content and delivery method evolved into its current format. This thesis is concerned with the career decisions of a purposive sample of PGA golf professionals, with two research participants from each of five different periods between 1961 and 2007. Whilst research around careers in professional sport is limited, this study draws upon career development theories (Super, 1957; 1981 and 1990), vocational development theory (Osipow and Fitzgerald, 1996; Brown, 2002; Whitson and Keller, 2004a) and the chaos theory of career (Davey et al., 2005). An exploratory inductive approach to the narrative data gathered from the retrospective views of the samples participant‟s career histories was adopted. Analysis of the data revealed four main findings, the importance of the community into which the aspiring professional is immersed, the significance of the first job and the employing professional on future career progression, the need for structured career planning and the potential effects of chance / luck. The thesis concludes that the PGA training programme must better prepare golf professionals for multiple career adjustments and encourage a flexible approach to career development.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) presents itself as the main cause that leads children and teenagers looking for mental health ambulatories. It is well known that a lot of individuals that do not fill diagnostics criterias, presents a lot of symptoms related to hyperactivity and attention deficits and also feel functional failures. Through a random sample of adolescents of low income families localized in the metropolitan region of São Paulo this study investigated the association between the Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Symptom (ADHS) and the human relations difficulties, their relation with sportive practices and leisure time. The ADHS sample was analyzed with and without mental health problems (MHP). The following instruments were used for this evaluation: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Brief Impairment Scale and the Questionnaire about Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria. The main results obtained pointed out that these adolescents with ADHS have socialization difficulties with their parents, teachers and colleagues beyond unsatisfactory school performance. The result of this research turn possible to detect aspects about the relation between these teenagers with ADHS and some MHP involved. Additionally appointed the importance and benefits that the motor intervention and the sportive practice since their infancy can bring to these teenagers lifes with ADHS, helping them in their socialization and leisure time.

O Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade (TDAH) apresenta-se como uma das principais causas de procura de ambulatórios de saúde mental de crianças e adolescentes. Sabe-se atualmente que muitos indivíduos que não preenchem critérios diagnósticos apresentam muitos sintomas relacionados aos sintomas de déficits atenção e hiperatividade (SDAH) e também sofrem prejuízos funcionais. Numa amostra aleatória de adolescentes de uma área de baixa renda da região metropolitana de São Paulo, o presente estudo investigou a associação entre SDAH e dificuldades de relacionamento, relações com as práticas esportivas e de lazer. Os SDAH foram analisados com e sem problemas de saúde mental (PSM). Para a avaliação, foram utilizados os seguintes instrumentos: Strenghts and Difficulties Questionnaire, Brief Impairment Scale e o questionário de Critério de Classificação Econômica Brasil. Os principais resultados desta pesquisa foram que adolescentes com SDAH possuem dificuldades de relacionamento com seus pais, professores e colegas, além de possuírem aproveitamento escolar insatisfatório. Estes achados possibilitaram destacar aspectos sobre a relação existente entre este jovem com SDAH e alguns PSM envolvidos. Também, propôs apontar a importância e os benefícios que a intervenção motora e a prática esportiva feita desde a infância podem trazer para a vida destes jovens com SDAH, auxiliando também na sociabilização e no lazer.

▼ Quiltmaking teachers are working in a non-credentialed environment where students choose to participate in classes and workshops as a leisure activity, selecting a form of nonformal learning to enrich their personal informal learning. These teachers have followed their own journey in quiltmaking and embarked on another journey to teach others. However, in pursuing their teaching careers, they spend significant amounts of time on the business of quilting and find their own quiltmaking impacted by the needs of their businesses. In their own quiltmaking though, they have a relationship with their materials through the act of creating knowledge in physical form which is as influenced by their materials as by their own prior knowledge. The purpose of this study is to understand how quiltmaking teachers learn and develop their specialization in quiltmaking and to understand how these quiltmaking teachers learn to navigate a diffuse network of quilting guilds, shops, and shows in order to pursue their teaching careers. I used actor-network theory, recreation specializations, and communities of practice as theoretical frameworks. I focused on individuals teaching at least one quiltmaking class in the eight counties identified as Southcentral Pennsylvania during 2016. My data included 92 biographies of 65 of teachers and 14 semi-structured interviews, recruited from an initial list of more than 80 identified teachers. Themes from qualitative content analysis of the biographies and constant comparative analysis of the semi-structured interviews fall broadly into three categories: the quiltmaking journey, the business of teaching, and quiltmakers’ relationship with their materials. This study is at the intersection of adult education and leisure studies. It contributes to the learning on teaching in nonformal education, specifically in teaching in a non-credentialed leisure environment. ▼ This study describes a part of leisure time pedagogues’ work in school, the content of the activities leisure time pedagogues accomplish in circle times. A circle time is one of many vital traditions in pre-school, to which leisure time pedagogues have historically been closely connected. Since the circles are accomplished in school, which has other traditions than the pre-school, the circles are seen as a meeting between the pre-school/leisure-time centre traditions and the school traditions. The study describes how 13 leisure time pedagogues’ experience their work, accomplish circle times and use content within the circles. The description and analysis are based on different data-collection methods including interviews, video-recording of a circle-time, stimulated recall of the video-recorded material, follow-up discussion and video analysis. Giddens (1984) theory of structuration has been a point of departure for the analysis. The study has resulted in the identification of three different forms of working practice. These working practices are described as social directed practice, school directed practice and integrating practice. Through social directed practice the leisure time pedagogues’ use a content that they think differs from the content the children meet in the classrooms. In school directed practice the leisure time pedagogues use a content that they think is accepted within the norms of a school tradition. Through integrating practice the leisure time pedagogues use a content that integrates the different traditions. These working practices are regionalised and support different social positions of labour. These positions are: social fosterer, school assistant, school follower and integrating renewer. The results indicate that teachers do not necessarily dominate the leisure time pedagogues as regards the content of their activities in circle time. It is possible for leisure time pedagogues to demarcate and control their own work. The results also indicate that it is possible for leisure time pedagogues to contribute to the integration of the different traditions and in that way help change existing work in school.

▼ This study examined two areas: the composition of the American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) membership, and the training that individual members receive to benefit their professional practice. A comprehensive survey of 40 questions was sent to all AHTA members with email addresses. Forty-percent or 249 members responded to the survey. Demographic data indicated survey participants were most frequently white females between the ages of 46- 55 living within Eastern United States with a BA/BS in other specialized area, with 1-5 years experience as a therapist in a senior care center. She has received "a little" to "some" training mostly from workshops and is practicing "a little" to "some" in the role of a Horticultural Therapist. Analysis of survey responses found a moderate positive relationship between training and practice (R = .719). The only two areas that indicate any significant differences between training and practice were in foundations and professional organization. That is, training in foundations was not being used in practice, and training in professional organization was inadequate for what is needed in practice. Survey results also found two significant patterns of differences. First, there was significant difference between training and practice for those AHTA members who were registered compared to non-registered. Specifically, AHTA members who are registered had a higher overall mean level of training and practice when compared to AHTA members who are non-registered. Second, there was significant difference between training and practice for those AHTA members who had 11 or more years of experience. Specifically, AHTA members who are had more years of experience had a higher overall mean level of training and practice when compared to AHTA members who had fewer years of experience. The findings from this study will help to prepare for future HT training and employment needs. This study is a step towards the development of a competency-based evaluation of entry-level HT practitioners, part of the ongoing effort to protect the public interest and advance the field of HT.

▼ Passion describes a strong inclination towards an activity that people like and find important. It provides people with meaningful goals, facilitates personal development, and enriches their social lives. On the other hand, passion can be a source of tension with other areas of everyday life, which demands sacrifices, risks, and sometimes even suffering. The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between technology and passion. In particular, this thesis addresses a gap in our understanding of participation in social network sites designed to support people’s passions. While related work indicates the potential of passion-centric social network sites to enhance passion, little is known about how participation in these sites may complicate or otherwise influence passion. I conducted three empirical studies to address this gap. Study 1 and 2 examined bodybuilding and the social network site BodySpace, whereas study 3 focussed on analogue photography and Flickr. In all three studies I used a field research approach to examine passion and participation in social network sites as well as related offline settings. Study 1 identified three different categories of online participation: tool, community, and theatre. These three categories showed how passion-centric social network sites both support and constrain the development of skills, social relations, and identities related to passion. Study 2 expanded on these findings, showing how online participation and passion vary between amateurs and related professionals. Study 3 evaluated the findings from study 1 and 2 in a different context. This study refined earlier findings on participation and its influence on passion, and it showed which of these findings are applicable to different domains. Through these studies, this thesis contributes to current research in three distinct, but interrelated ways. First, the findings extend existing models of online participation by showing variations between the different categories of participation of amateurs and professionals. Second, this thesis extends current understanding of social relations on passion-centric social network sites by showing how and why users connect with different kinds of strangers as well as with groups of friends and peers. Finally, this thesis extends current understanding of passion in the context of social network sites. While existing sites support people in achieving their goals, they appear limited in mitigating sacrifices and risks, and thus they may adversely complicate passion. This thesis discusses practical implications emerging from these findings that address this challenge. It concludes with a call for novel technologies to mitigate sacrifices and to facilitate harmonious passion.

▼ Twitch.tv is a video live-streaming website that launched in 2011 with content centred mostly, but not exclusively, on the playing of video games. Streamers or broadcasters play games in real-time often accompanied by a face camera and audio, while viewers or audiences watch them and interact through a text chat. This study responds to the small, but growing literature surrounding Twitch, and addresses the relative lack of ethnographic research on the topic. Previous research on the platform has focussed thus far on technical aspects of the platform, however user-focused qualitative research on the platform has started to emerge, making this research both timely and relevant. This thesis considers how, and to what extent, the social practices of users contribute to the concepts of ‘networked publics’ and ‘social performance’. It draws on the work of danah boyd and Erving Goffman and considers the usefulness of their theoretical contributions to help contextualise the forms and amendments associated with platforms like Twitch. The analysis emerges from an ethnographic study conducted completely online that features reflexive participant observation, semi-structured, open-ended interviews conducted via email, and in-depth observations of participants’ channels. The thesis is divided into three thematically-organised main data chapters that then feed into a discussion that draws them together to consider a larger conceptual framework. The first such data chapter, ‘Twitch as a Social Media Platform’, argues that the platform demonstrates its role as a social networking site through evidence of matchmaking and mental health. The second main chapter, ‘Twitch as a hobby-profession’, addresses casual and serious leisure and considers the platform in terms of personal investment, branding, and streamer motivation. The third main chapter, ‘Interactions of Streamers and Viewers’, considers the different types of interactions displayed between various users including parasocal relationships and how audiences may hold power on Twitch. Overall, the thesis offers insight into platform use and it characterises Twitch as a user-led participatory space for like-minded individuals who interact in particular ways in a shared community of practice. The interactions exist along a flexible continuum of differing levels of intimacy where users can lurk, actively participate, and network on both personal and professional levels. Audiences are critical for the platform to function, for communities to flourish, and for streamer success. Streamers build rapport and construct ‘authentic’ brands to attract viewers and promote loyalty and sincerity, and users are seen to actively shape and shift extant social structures and practices over time. Ultimately, users find meaning, produce a sense of community belonging, forge social networks, and shape their own identities in relation to others. ▼ The interpretation of landscape, the significance of walking and the relationships that exist between them are rarely considered or critically examined in much of leisure research or outdoor pedagogic practice, despite their significance within other fields of academic study such as anthropology and cultural geography. This research seeks to explore how a variety of landscapes are perceived, how cultural and social interpretations influence this perception, and whether these interpretations may be re-envisioned by walking, or wayfaring, as an alternate way of making understandings and meanings with landscape. In exploring the disparate interpretations surrounding landscape, the concept of place and its specificity comes to the fore, as does the importance of the relationship between walking and how we make sense of place. A mixed methodological approach is employed to explore this relationship, combining auto-ethnography, phenomenology and the practice of walking itself. Utilising written notes, photographs, and recordings of personal observations and impressions made whilst on a combination of single and multi-day walks in a variety of locales both familiar and unknown in England, a series of reflective narratives were produced. These narratives serve to describe the experiences gained whilst wayfaring, and provide the data through which critical consideration is given regarding how landscape and place are interpreted in cultural and social contexts. Themes emergent from the narratives and discussed include psychogeography and the urban environment, countryside and suburbanisation, and landscape as amenity. In addition, consideration is given to stories of place, authenticity of place, the changing demographics of walkers, walking alone and with others, walking in different types of landscape, and the significance of paths. Key findings are that landscape is increasingly becoming places of consumption through practices of conservation, urbanisation, heritage and recreational amenity that produce a homogenous and hybridised character, and reflects an urban sensibility in regards to rural culture and nature. This might be resisted by walking where an engagement with the sedimented characteristics of a taskscape and its multi-generational footpaths are experienced. Such an embodied practice is a meaningful activity that might be understood through the concept of existential authenticity and, particularly with regards to long distance walking, might be 3 recognised as having components similar to that of pilgrimage. Furthermore, it is suggested that wayfaring offers an alternate perspective as a practice in the development of a particular relationship with landscape and place and has profound implications for outdoor pedagogic practice.

▼ A passion for participating in sport and recreation is ingrained in the culture and identity of the New Zealand population. While local authorities play an important role in ensuring the provision of sports facilities in a manner that adequately serves a city or district, in recent times the private sector has become increasingly involved in the development of sports facilities. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the challenges and opportunities for the private sector in developing community sports facilities in New Zealand. By employing qualitative methods, including the use of a case study and semi-structured interviews with a range of key players involved in the issue, the research identified the presence of a market-led approach to sports facility development and provided counter evidence to the existing body of knowledge that suggests sports facilities developed by the private sector erode community connectedness (Arai & Pedlar, 2003; Brueggemann, 2002; Tomlinson, 1991). Moreover, it was argued that the provision of sports facilities by the private sector can in fact benefit communities, particularly when a developer has philanthropic motives. Despite recognisable benefits of the use of market mechanisms, the findings strongly supported the role of the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), and the resource consent process in particular, in regulating sports facility development, mitigating the negative impacts and facilitating public input. The study provided a further analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of public-private partnerships as a way to improve the methods and structures used for market-led sports facility provision under the RMA. Consequently, in order to achieve more efficient, effective and equitable provision, the research recommended nurturing greater collaboration between the public and private sectors during the resource consent process and providing simpler and more accessible planning documents for developers and philanthropists.

Alors que la sociologie dominante soutient que, d’une part, la mondialisation du sport entraîne dans son sillage un processus d’uniformisation des cultures sportives et que,d’autre part, les sociétés postmodernes vouent un culte au loisir libre et désintéressé, l’idéeque défend cette thèse est que l’application d’une pareille lecture n’est pas inéluctable enAfrique en général et au Cameroun en particulier et ce, pour deux raisons au moins.Premièrement, même si l’impact du système mondial sur le champ ludosportif camerounaisest indéniable, l’étude des activités sportives dans leur spécificité nationale et leurssingularités pratiques montre que le sport, en tant que fait social, porte toujours les marquesde la société qui l’abrite. Deuxièmement, dans des pays moins avancés comme c’est le cas duCameroun, le loisir sportif, dans la mesure où il occasionne la rencontre d’une pluralitéd’acteurs aux statuts différents, ne peut pas être détaché des problèmes que vivent auquotidien les acteurs qu’il implique. Il est plutôt une ressource sociale et ne se comprendtotalement que lorsqu’on examine ce sur quoi il débouche en termes de relations, de réseaux,d’échanges de capitaux, etc. Sur la base d’une problématique s’insérant dans la perspectiveinteractionniste, et s’appuyant méthodologiquement sur une approche à la fois qualitative etquantitative, nos observations ont permis de constater que la pratique du sport collectif,notamment le football, le basketball et la course du week-end, ne repose pas simplement surdes besoins de loisir et de divertissement. Il s’agit aussi d’une arène (au sens militaire et sociologique) où s’affrontent des acteurs aux rationalités calculatrices protéiformes.

Meanwhile the dominant sociology assumes that globalization generates astandardization process of sports cultures, in one hand, and that postmodern societies are onlypracticing leisure in a free and disinterested spirit in another hand, this thesis is structuredaround the main idea that such an analytical trends are not adequate in Africa globally and inCameroon in particular for two reasons at least.
