▼ The Wenyuan yinghua 文苑英華is the largest extant medieval Chinese literary anthology. Considered one of the four great works of the Song, it was compiled during the early Northern Song dynasty at the same time as the Taiping yulan 太平御覽 and Taiping guangji 太平廣記 by Li Fang 李昉 (925-996) and the same group of scholars who worked on the preceding works. At 1000 juan, the work represents a major collection of Tang dynasty poetry and prose. The work went through four major revisions over the course of 200 years before finally being printed in 1204 by the Southern Song scholar Zhou Bida 周必大 (1126-1204). Divided into 38 genres, the work contains 19,102 pieces written by over 2,200 authors. Despite this massive amount of material, the work has largely been overlooked by scholars in both the East and West since the time of its printing. This dissertation will explore the history of the Wenyuan yinghua from its compilation until the modern era. This exploration will include its compilation history and printing history as well as its association with other medieval Chinese literary anthologies. Special attention will be paid to the value the Wenyuan yinghua holds for scholars and the important role it plays in Tang studies. Consideration will also be given the Wenyuan yinghua bianzheng 文苑英華辯證.

▼ The principle object of the present study entitled,
“History of English Literature in Pre-post Independence India: A
Critical Evaluation” is undertaken with a view to study it
critically. It aims at highlighting different aspects of novels
before and after independence. An attempt has also been made to
signify novels of Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao and Manohar Malgonkar as
a truly Indian expatriate. The entitled thesis is a modest attempt
to bring to light the remarkable work undertaken by major novelists
like M.R.Anand, Raja Rao and Manohar Malgonkar in Indian Writing in
English. Thus, the very end of this study is to review their
employed varied techniques conveying vision of life. It also
reflects distinctive features of their novels and the symbolic
significance of fictional work, mood, tone and technical strategy
by characterizing Indian English today. In order to show how the
English literature begin in India before 1920 and how it developed
in India has first been observed in chapter I entitled
„Introduction‟. In Chapter II entitled „History of Indian English
literature‟ highlights the renaissance in Indian literature. The
reformist such as Aurobindo, Rammohan Roy etc. and their
contribution in renaissance movement. Impact of English literature
on India is also discussed in detail in this
chapter.

▼ Television has turned out to be the predominant medium of contemporary storytelling. In
its brief history the making of its dramas across time is being affected and influenced by
various factors. Notably social factors constitute the lion share of the reciprocal
influence. Television drama in Ethiopia, from its inception, has evolved under the
influence of social changes together with important changes brought by introduction of
new technology.
This project was preliminary sets out to inquire the evolution of Ethiopian television
(ETV) dramas in the context of the changing societies and its stories. It then reflected on
the interconnectedness between the shifts in the shapes of television drama and the
patterns of the socio-historical conditions that changed from time to time according to
the social and political administration system.
In order to assure the analysis was properly grounded in the condition of drama
production, an attempt was made to devise a historicist methodology. For that purpose,
strong theoretical and conceptual claim of television drama study is employed. Access
was granted by ETV to watch the dramas which is barred by only the loss of some of the
dramas from the catalogue as well as the audio-visual library.
The discussion of the study mainly rests upon illuminating the evolution of ETV dramas
along side major social changes and the flow of television in Ethiopia since its arrival.
To that end ideological and aesthetic criteria was employed to illustrate particular
dramas. Then the study reveals that ETV dramas in the 1960’s were the first experience
for the country and reflected the wealthy social classes. In the 1970’s, after the
revolution, the dramas began to reflect the social life of the nation under new social
order. In the 1990’s dramas began to take new direction in a more liberal atmosphere as
it cultivated new writers that work on various issues. Then it was indicated that while the
dramas reflected the society of each period, they were forced to represent the dominant
view hold by the coming and gone ruling classes.
Given the findings- conclusion is drawn to illuminate what has been discussed along
with an implication and future prospects. In general it is stated that ETV has been used to
reflect the changing societies in the dramas created in various forms which itself changed
from time too time.

▼ Arriving as indentured laborers during the latter half of the 19th century, the East Indian diaspora in the French Caribbean occupies a marginal space in literary and critical writings emerging from this region. This diaspora, the majority of whom were recruited from Indian settlements under French possession at the time, constituted a cheap source of labor replacement for the plantation owners during the post-slavery epoch. Contracted to work for a minimum period of five years, these laborers, unlike African slaves, had the right to repatriate at the end of their service. For those who decided to stay in the already socio-economically and racially hierarchized French Caribbean society, it meant that they were then positioned de facto at the lowest echelon of the pyramid. The Indo-French Caribbeans’ historical and social marginalization coupled with their ethnic minority status – to date persons of East Indian descent account for approximately 15% and 3% of the Guadeloupean and Martinican populations respectively – bled into their non-recognition in literary and critical writings. Admittedly, canonical cultural identity paradigms shaping French Caribbean discourse – such as Négritude and Antillanité, which focus predominantly on the African diaspora or even Créolité, which, though paying more attention to “minority” cultures, subsumes cultural difference into a homogenous creole identity – results in the sidelining of the Indo-French-Caribbeans’ cultural and physical presence. In my dissertation, Locating Indianité: Representations of the East Indian diaspora in selected novels by Moutoussamy, Condé, Confiant, and Minatchy-Bogat, I analyze literary depictions of Indo-French-Caribbeans in five novels by both well known (Maryse Condé and Raphaël Confiant) and lesser-known (Ernest Moutoussamy and Arlette Minatchy-Bogat) authors. I specifically examine the writers’ treatment of the East Indian diaspora’s exilic experience, its cultural identity formation and interaction with the surrounding cultural diversity characteristic of the French Caribbean to call into question and revise existing cultural identity models. I, therefore, examine the following questions in my dissertation: How does the East Indian diaspora in the French Caribbean add to or destabilize prevailing identity paradigms and processes such as Créolité and créolisation? How do authors imagine the East Indian diasporic identity in the French Caribbean novel? What role does space play in constructing and/or situating the East Indian identity in the French Caribbean novel? How do authors of non-East Indian origin represent this community in their fiction? How do their representations remodel cultural identity paradigms to render them inclusive of Indianness? Where do their representations position the East Indian identity in the broader cultural identity framework of Créolité and créolisation at work in the French Caribbean? How do characters of mixed East Indian descent, specifically mixed race female characters, figure in this
literature? How does the mixed…

▼ From 1934 — when guidelines for Socialist Realism were established at the first All-Union Congress of Soviet Writers — to Stalin’s death in 1953, Soviet folklore deliberately promoted the new social order and encouraged the rural masses to support it. So-called Soviet Tales (sovetskie skazki), one of the most interesting but under-researched folktale forms to arise in the 1930s, were prose wondertales created through the collaborative efforts of traditional rural story-tellers and “party-minded” folklorists, who provided the tellers with new motifs and plots and “collected” and published the results as folklore. The Soviet Tale was conceived as an ideological weapon for the agitation and education of the rural masses. Its goals were to promote class consciousness and “Socialist patriotism” among the peasantry. Soviet Tales promoted the goals of the new regime and its particular realization of what it regarded as the masses’ dream for a better life. Themes and motifs ranged from the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War to social and technological progress; from the new role of women in Soviet society to the opening of the Moscow Metro and the VSKhV (All-Union Agricultural Exhibition); and from the Stalin-era “cults” of aviation, Arctic exploration, and the “Wise Leader” himself to warnings against foreign and internal enemies. These tales promoted three types of heroes. First, the ideal people of Communism: strong, healthy, young peasants and workers who support revolutionary transformation. Second, the brave and self-sacrificing heroes of the Russian Civil War such as Vasilii Chapaev and Semyon Budennyi. Third, Soviet leaders — especially Stalin, the “Hero with Black Curls.” The Soviet Tale offers a paradoxical representation of the historical and cultural development of its time. On the one hand, it reveals Soviet propaganda and the evolution of the “cult” of Stalin. On the other, it may well express certain aspirations of the peasantry and other working people. My thesis offers a representative collection of Soviet Tales, in particular wondertales. It is divided into three parts: an introduction, a critical edition of selected tales in Russian, and their English translation. In the introduction, I provide historical background and definitions of Soviet Folklore. I also discuss problems of interpreting (and editing as well as translating) narrative forms which are called “fakeloric” or “pseudofolkloric” and raise the question of whether it is appropriate to refer to Soviet Tales as folklore. The critical edition consists of eight wondertales that I have taken from collections of Soviet Folklore published from the 1930s to the 1950s and 60s. In my view, they best represent the themes and characteristics of the “Soviet Wondertale.” The earliest printing of each tale is used for the copy-text: accidentals (punctuation and spelling) are preserved; substantives are examined and, when possible, their earliest form is determined. The edited tales are translated in an English fairy-tale idiom. My thesis makes them…

▼ This thesis aims to surmount the perennial critical neglect of literary Modernism in Wales through revealing and examining the Welsh Modernism of eight, key Anglophone Welsh writers. In chapters one, two and three, in which I examine work by Gwyn Thomas, Glyn Jones, Idris Davies, David Jones, Lynette Roberts and Vernon Watkins, I demonstrate how, in different ways, the linguistic experimentation of Welsh writers both reflects and constitutes their engagement with the potentially revolutionary, Modernistic conditions generated by unprecedented linguistic, social and cultural change in modern Wales. In chapter four, I draw a comparison between Dylan Thomas's use of rural Carmarthenshire, and Salvador Dalfs use of Cadaques, on the Catalonian coast, to create psycho-geographical spaces of Modernist transgression while in chapter five, I identify and explore similarly combative and progressive Modernist techniques specifically, of the grotesque in the work of Gwyn Thomas and Rhys Davies. I conclude that Welsh writing in English from 1930-1949 saw the emergence of a distinct, Welsh Modernism that challenges conventional literary histories and, in more than one sense, takes Modernism and Modernist studies into new territories.

▼ This thesis explores the emergence of a Welsh voice in exile in London at the turn of the twentieth century. Through readings of works by four London-Welsh writers active during the period 1890-1915 - Ernest Rhys (1859-1946), Arthur Machen (1863-1947), W. H. Davies (1871-1940) and Caradoc Evans (1878-1945) - it argues that the London context of these works makes possible the construction of various modes of Welsh identity. The introduction begins by noting how theorists of national identity have identified cultural practices, including literature, as important in shaping the imagined community of the nation. It then incorporates, and adapts, Raymond Williams's thinking about the interplay of residual, dominant, and emergent currents operating within a culture by arguing that residual elements within a society can be harnessed and endowed with the potential to become newly emergent. The introduction concludes by identifying Matthew Arnold's description of the Celt in his On the Study of Celtic Literature (1867) as a residual element. Nevertheless, it points out how, in various ways, Arnold's Celt is recuperated by London-Welsh writers (among others) at the turn of the twentieth century. Chapter One argues that the work of Ernest Rhys constructs a self-conscious Welsh literary tradition by reclaiming Welsh-language literature and Arnold's Celt and mobilising them as part of a cultural-nationalist aesthetic London is an important influence on this development for material and aesthetic reasons. Chapter Two considers how Celtic history and mythology haunt the representation of the Gwent border country in the work of Arthur Machen, arguing that Machen's Celt is also derived from Arnold but recast as a spectral, ghosdy figure. Chapter Three discusses Machen's fellow son of Gwent, W. H. Davies. Davies's work, both poetry and prose, frequendy contrasts country and city, yet this chapter argues that Davies's work articulates a hybrid voice which anticipates several of the themes and techniques present in later Welsh writing in English. Chapter Four extends this by considering the early work of Caradoc Evans, whose early 'Cockney' stories carry structural and thematic similarities with both Davies's poetry and his own later collections. By this reading, Evans's My People (1915) stands as a text which inherits earlier works and draws on an already-existing London-Welsh literary culture. This thesis concludes by arguing that the London context to these writers' works makes possible the consolidation of a Welsh literary structure of feeling into an emergent literary voice in English: London enables each of these writers to reassess their relationship with a Wales left behind, but a Wales which nonetheless provides an impetus to new creative developments.

Y wedd arall yw’r model cynllunio ieithyddol cynhwysol a arddelir gan Lywodraeth Cymru ers 2003, model a bennai i’r gymdeithas sifil rôl bartneriaethol allweddol yn y prosiect adfywio ieithyddol.
Olrheinir yn gyntaf ddatblygiad y mudiad ymwybyddiaeth iaith ym maes addysgeg dysgu iaith yn Lloegr yn negawdau olaf yr 20fed ganrif, ac esblygiad ei bersbectifau beirniadol. Olrheinir wedyn ddatblygiad Hyfforddiant Ymwybyddiaeth Iaith yng Nghymru, nid ym maes addysgeg iaith, ond fel ymyriad eilaidd gan gyrff is-lywodraethol i esbonio i’w staff y gofynion statudol newydd iddynt drin y Gymraeg a’r Saesneg yn gyfartal wrth ddarparu gwasanaethau cyhoeddus. Gofynnai hyn am gryn newid arferion, wedi tros 450 mlynedd o eithrio’r Gymraeg o beuoedd swyddogol. Esblygodd cyfeiriadedd beirniadol ar yr hyfforddiant i gyflwyno’r cyd-destun ehangach i hyfforddeion, sef ffurf a amlyga natur ideolegol polisïau ieithyddol. Ar sail tystiolaeth wreiddiol ac eilaidd, gan gynnwys arolwg ansoddol a meintiol o hyfforddeion, dadleuir ei fod yn borth mynediad pwysig i ddinasyddion i wybodaeth a disgwrs prin am y Gymraeg.
O droi at fodel cynllunio ieithyddol y Llywodraeth, olrheinir rhethreg gynhwysol testunau polisi, a chymherir y rhethreg â’r cynhyrchion polisi a gafwyd. Cyflwynir tystiolaeth mai prin fu’r ymyriadau cynhwysol, ac y methodd y prif asiantau cynllunio ieithyddol ag adnabod potensial Hyfforddiant Ymwybyddiaeth Feirniadol fel porth mynediad arwyddocaol i ddisgwrs cynhwysol. Argymhellir y dylid cynnwys yr hyfforddiant yn yr amrediad o brif ymyriadau a ystyrir gan Lywodraeth Cymru i weithredu’r model cynhwysol, a’i brif-ffrydio mewn sawl pau gymdeithasol er cynyddu mynediad dinasyddion at wybodaeth a disgwrs ieithyddol, gan fraenaru’r tir ar gyfer ‘newid ymddygiad ieithyddol’.

▼ Mae’r traethawd hwn yn ymchwilio i sut y gall technoleg cyfieithu, sef Cyfieithu Awtomatig a Chofion Cyfieithu, fod o fudd i’r cyfieithydd proffesiynol mewn perthynas ag ymdrech wybyddol, cynhyrchu testun a chynhyrchedd, a sut y gall fod o gymorth o’r herwydd i’r gwaith o greu Cymru ddwyieithog. Ystyrir hefyd yr effaith a gaiff y defnydd o’r technolegau hyn ar ansawdd terfynol y cyfieithiadau, yn ôl cyfieithwyr profiadol a darpar ddefnyddwyr y cyfieithiadau hyn. Defnyddir dulliau ymchwil cofnodi trawiadau bysell a thracio llygaid, ynghyd â theclynnau ymchwil sefydliad Translation Automation Users Society (TAUS), sef dulliau nad ydynt wedi eu defnyddio hyd yma wrth ymchwilio i gyfieithu proffesiynol Cymraeg. Mae’r defnydd o dracio llygaid wrth ymchwilio i ansawdd cymharol hefyd yn wreiddiol yn rhyngwladol, a’r astudiaeth hon yw’r gyntaf i ddefnyddio’r dechnoleg hon i ymchwilio i effaith testunau a ôl-olygwyd ar y darllenydd. Hon yw’r astudiaeth gyntaf o’i bath hefyd i ymchwilio i fuddion ymarferol defnyddio technoleg cyfieithu i’r cyfieithydd proffesiynol Cymraeg y tu fewn i fframwaith rhagdybiaethol-diddwythol, gan ddefnyddio ystadegaeth gasgliadol berthnasol. Dengys y canlyniadau fod modd i’r defnydd o dechnoleg cyfieithu hwyluso gwaith y cyfieithydd yn wybyddol, lleihau’r gwaith wrth gynhyrchu testun ynghyd â chynyddu cynhyrchedd cyfieithwyr. Darganfuwyd hefyd nad yw’r defnydd o dechnoleg cyfieithu yn effeithio’n negyddol ar ansawdd cyfieithiadau terfynol, a hynny yn ôl cyfieithwyr proffesiynol profiadol a’r gymuned Gymraeg sy’n darllen gwaith cyfieithwyr. Y traethawd hwn yw’r cyntaf i ddadlau hyn ar gyfer y Gymraeg. Mae’r ymchwil a gyflwynir yma felly yn gyfraniad sylweddol i Astudiaethau Cyfieithu o safbwynt y Gymraeg, gan mai hwn yw’r traethawd cyntaf i ddadansoddi defnyddioldeb Cof Cyfieithu a Chyfieithu Awtomatig ar gyfer cyfieithwyr y Gymraeg mewn un astudiaeth sylweddol. Ar adeg pan fydd cyfieithu i’r Gymraeg yn tyfu (cf. Pennod 2), cyfraniad gwreiddiol y traethawd hwn yw dangos, trwy arbrofion rheoledig, fod Cyfieithu Awtomatig a Chof Cyfieithu yn medru bod yn arfau gwirioneddol bwerus i gyfieithwyr proffesiynol y Gymraeg.

▼ A speaker experiencing physical isolation, interpersonal disconnection, and gaps in knowledge of familial history/ancestry, attempts to piece together and rationalize discrete sequences in multiple figures lives, thinly veiled by operatic structure. The speaker desires to sustain briefly-experienced moments of physical, intellectual, and emotional connection, despite the awareness of this being unfeasible. Familial history, diaspora/emigration, itinerancy, and physical/emotional intimacy are questioned through the speaker's longing for reason in the unknown; in particular, the cultures and practices independent of the speaker's
subject position, such as Italian operatic performance and Catholic rituals. Structures meant to stabilize and connect – musical/operatic sequence, architectural foundations, port cities/harbors, marriage and romantic relationship practices – are troubled through sequential breaks, fragmented memories, and unexpected turns. These subjects – the trade ports, operas, family members, intimate partners – become falsified constructs through the speaker's explorations. The subjects resonate merely as concepts, idealized structures that ultimately cannot be reached through language. Reason fails to account for irrational elements beyond understanding. What can be realized and sustained, however, is longing itself; the longing and continuous pursuit for the beauty and resolutions that art and intertextuality might provide; the desire for language, music, and interpersonal relationships to reach an ideal place beyond fragmented reality, regardless of this impossibility.

▼ The Paper Machine is a collection of narrative and contemplative poems whose speakers explore the significance of domestic relationships that shape everyday life. Works in this series of poems engage rural and urban southern settings in which the traditional abuts the contemporary – sidewalks against crop fields, dance clubs beside pulp mills. Recurrent throughout the collection are inquiries into hunger, labor, family, and longing. Additionally, poems in this collection embrace poetic forms as settings, not only in the sense of structured rooms inhabited by language but also as industrial – a set of operable controls to be tweaked and altered towards divergent results. Similarly, poems in The Paper Machine use found lines as fibers, exploring the potential of salvaged language to become composite components of other works through rearrangement and reuse. Poet and philosopher Georges Perec once pointed out the conceptual echoes between sheets of paper and bedroom sheets, that people use both spaces to define, record, and remake identity. In a similar thread, The Paper Machine enters into conversation with the places people occupy – geographic, psychosocial, economic and familial – in an effort to understand how bedrooms, landscapes, arts and the people who engage them retain and reconstruct the slurry of daily American culture.

▼ The thesis focuses on the career and works of Chen Diexian as an entrepreneur and literatus. These works provide a focal point for reflection on the activities of popular writers, publishers, literary magazines, and the business of
literature in early 20th Century China. The first chapter examines preceding studies of The Money Demon, as well as appreciative poems and prefaces, poem contests, and records of poets. As a more detailed supplement to Michael Hock’s theory of “style,” it shows how Chen Diexian used poems to form his personal relations and accumulate literary reputation. The second chapter is about the publisher China Library and the correspondence schools for classical
literature. Appropriating the theory of “commodifying classical
literature,” this chapter explores the development of this less known but important publisher, the designs of its four magazines, and the readership of “Butterfly”
literature. The third chapter presents a close reading of The Money Demon that illuminates the marginalized status and identity crisis of the “Butterfly” writers. The thesis aims to uncover “hidden” organizations, literary and business activities, and texts in order to further our understanding of “Mandarin Duck and Butterfly Literature”.

▼ The word basara is frequently used in discussing Japan’s fourteenth century. Indeed, the period itself is often casually referred to as the “age of basara,” and the fourteenth century military chronicle Taiheiki is its primary text. Basara is often taken to mean excess in dress, behavior, and consumption. However, this loose understanding is not born out by the extant references in fourteenth-century documents. Recent scholarship has pointed to a more specific descriptive meaning in this period: movement like the fluttering of loose clothing. Yet, particularly in Taiheiki‘s Sasaki Dōyo, there is an active “maximalist” aesthetic at work. I hope to show basara’s precise meaning in context, and propose another term to describe the aesthetic phenomenon: “transgressive excess.” That is, excessive in the common sense, and “transgressing” in four categories: appropriate taste, class structure, public order, and political borders. This terminological realignment allows a clearer understanding of the aesthetics of excess.

▼ This thesis encompasses discussions regarding the various aspects of Chinese bianwei 辨偽 studies ( “Discerning Inauthenticity Studies”). The first chapter delves into the notion of inauthenticity, distinguishing an inauthentic text from a literary forgery in the context of early Chinese texts. It explicitly states that, in this context, the criteria for discerning inauthenticity should exclude consideration of authorship, since the notion of authorship itself might be described as irrelevant in that time period. Besides authorship, the argument based on the notion “additions and interpolations” (fuyi 附益) needs to be removed from the criteria for authenticating early Chinese texts, since this notion does not apply to those early texts of compositional nature. The next section discusses editorial efforts that have been applied to early texts during their two millennia of transmission. Since editorial efforts might be treated by later generations of scholars as evidence to suggest that the texts are forgeries, it is of great importance for us to be aware that a large quantity of pre-modern Chinese texts have undergone long periods of fluidity, and any individual who was involved in the history of a text’s transmission might have had his or her impact on the text. The last section of the first chapter touches on possible motives for literary forgeries and inauthentic early texts. The second chapter revisits previous scholarship that has been contributed to bianwei studies. It first traces back to bianwei studies before its systemization. Then, it re-examines and evaluates the criteria for “discerning inauthenticity” that were first summarized by Hu Yinglin 胡應麟 (1551-1602) and later supplemented and elaborated in Liang Qichao’s 梁啟超 (1873-1929) work. The following section recapitulates the advocacy of utilizing both transmitted
literature and archaeologically recovered materials, known as the “Two-fold evidential approach” (erchong zhengju fa 二重證據法), as well as addressing several pertinent issues, including viewing unearthed non-literary artifacts and excavated manuscripts as two equally important kinds of evidence, and the importance of scrutinizing the contextual information of excavated manuscripts. The third chapter begins with a brief summary of the present situation of unprovenienced manuscripts. Since unprovenienced manuscripts are not the discoveries of standard archaeological excavations, this type of material in general lacks external evidence. It is possible that some bits and pieces of information about unprovenienced manuscripts can be recollected so as to form “quasi-external” evidence. Still, this type of evidence is considered by some scholars to be speculative, and cannot completely compensate for the lack of external evidence in authenticating unprovenienced manuscripts. Next, special attention is given to the scientific analyses that have been conducted on unprovenienced manuscript samples. This section contributes to answering the question of whether scientific analyses’ results are reliable and…

▼ This dissertation examines literary texts by colonial Korean writers in the Japanese empire and the post-war “Zainichi” Korean minority in Japan. Whereas colonial Korean
literature and Zainichi
literature have typically been considered separately, I analyze them as part of a single trajectory, noting continuities in how Korean writers on both sides of the 1945 collapse of the empire struggle to avoid the dual traps of essentialism and assimilation. That is, in the face of pressures to assimilate into (post)imperial Japan, these writers grapple with the question of how to assert Korean particularity without reproducing stereotyped notions of Korean difference which were generated by the same imperial hierarchies. This overdetermined position—arising from the dual impulse to deconstruct essentialist difference and to avoid collapsing productive difference into a hegemonic mainstream—may be called the double bind of identity. The central focus of this project, then, is whether and how marginalized writers are able to overcome particular versions of this critical double bind through the medium of literary text. It further attempts to rethink the frameworks applied to these authors and texts, including modern Korean
literature, modern Japanese
literature, and even groupings like Zainichi
literature that attempt to resist strictly national models, by shedding light on their participation in such overdeterminations. Looking closely at how writers work within and around the various constraints imposed on their writing, I argue that the hybrid language of these texts, located in the interstices and imbrications of Korean and Japanese spaces, is a potential site for radical representations of a particular “Korean” identity. The space of literary text offers a medium for representing identities less prone to falling into essentialist traps precisely because it is imaginary and undecidable. This radical language makes possible an escape from the double bind of identity faced by these writers: to simultaneously “represent” and transcend Korea. In this way, reading Korean writers in Japanese spaces not only offers a basis for critiquing ethno-national literary frameworks, but also has the potential to open up new possibilities for coping with difference, contributing to broader debates on intersectionality and identity politics. To that end, this dissertation takes up the particular intersectional circumstances of four Korean writers and their negotiations in hybrid literary texts: the queer language and subjectivities of Yi Kwangsu's Mujŏng, Ch'ae Mansik's ambiguously satirical repent for pro-Japanese collaboration, Kim Sŏkpŏm's invention of an imaginary Korea within the space of the Japanese language, and Kin Kakuei's attempt to “speak” through a narrator who stutters.

▼ This thesis re-evaluates the relationship between original text and translation through an approach that assumes the equality of source and target texts. This is based on the translation strategy expressed in the work of the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges and theoretical approaches by Walter Benjamin and Michel Foucault, as well as exponents of Possible World Theory. Rather than considering what may be lost in translation, this thesis focuses on why we insist on maintaining a border between the textual phenomena ‘translation’ and ‘original’ and argues for a mutually enriching dialogue between a text and its translation. The opening chapter investigates marginal cases of translation and determines where one form (original) ends and the other (translation) begins. The case studies derive from the anthology Cuentos breves y extraordinarios (edited by Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares) and include ‘pseudotranslations’: texts presented as translations even though no linguistic transfer precedes them. Another example is Borges’s self-translation of his Spanish poem ‘Mañana’ into German as ‘Südlicher Morgen’ for the Expressionist poet Kurt Heynicke. Although an original text, the pseudotranslation is judged as a translation, problematizing the boundary between the two. Since its perception changes over time, it unsettles the idea of the stable text by positing a text in progress. The analysis of the effects of the translation is supported by a discussion of Michel Foucault’s categorization expressed in Les mots et les choses (1966). Translations are regarded as coins, which gain value through their ability to represent, and create heterotopias: potentially existing non-places, which escape logic and thereby create an ‘uneasy laughter.’ Heterotopias are based on anti-logical orders, exemplified in the organisation of Antología de la literatura fantástica, collaboratively edited by Borges, Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo in 1940. This organisation invites an interpretation based on resemblance rather than comparison, the latter of which always results in the production and reproduction of hierarchies. In Chapter Two, I uncover the fraudulent assumption that an original is a stable text. I make recourse to Walter Benjamin’s definition of origin in ‘Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers’ (1923) as ‘the eddy in the stream of becoming’, and André Lefevere’s notion of the refracted text, explaining that our first encounters with a classic text are mostly made through abridged, altered, and interpreted versions. Collaborative work also unsettles the idea of the single author as source and guarantor of authenticity, exemplified through examples of Borges and Bioy Casares’s collaboration, and Borges’s collaborative translations with Norman Thomas di Giovanni. I elaborate on Possible World Theory (PWT) following Marie-Laure Ryan and Ruth Ronen, explaining key terms and concepts and showing that PWT offers an alternative to thinking about the relationship of original text and translation as hierarchical. PWT can be employed to consider source…

▼ In this thesis connections between messages on the public wall of the Russian social network Vkontakte are analysed and classified. A total of 1818 messages from three different Vkontakte groups were collected and analysed according to a new framework based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) research into cohesion and Simmons’s (1981) adaptation of their classification for Russian. The two categories of textuality, cohesion and coherence, describe the linguistic connections between messages. The main aim was to find out how far the traditional categories of cohesion are applicable to an online social network including written text as well as multimedia-files. In addition to linguistic cohesion the pragmatic and topic coherence between Vkontakte messages was also analysed. The analysis of pragmatic coherence classifies the messages with acts according to their pragmatic function in relation to surrounding messages. Topic coherence analyses the content of the messages, describes where a topic begins, changes or is abandoned. Linguistic cohesion, topic coherence and pragmatic coherence enable three different types of connections between messages and these together form a coherent communication on the message wall. The cohesion devices identified by Halliday and Hasan and Simmons were found to occur in these texts, but additional devices were also identified: these are multimodal, graphical and grammatical cohesion.

▼ This study is about the construction of identity and self-promotion of status by means of elite education during the first and second centuries CE, a cultural and historical period termed by many as the Second Sophistic. Though the Second Sophistic has traditionally been treated as a Greek cultural movement, individual Romans also viewed engagement with a past, Greek or otherwise, as a way of displaying education and authority, and, thereby, of promoting status. Readings of the work of Quintilian, Tacitus and Pliny, first- and second-century Latin prose authors, reveal a remarkable engagement with the methodologies and motivations employed by their Greek contemporaries—Dio of Prusa, Plutarch, Lucian and Philostratus, most particularly. The first two chapters of this study illustrate and explain the centrality of Greek in the Roman educational system. The final three chapters focus on Roman displays of that acquired Greek paideia in language,
literature and oratory, respectively. As these chapters demonstrate, the social practices of paideia and their deployment were a multi-cultural phenomenon.

▼ In 1939, the English painter and writer Leonora Carrington was hospitalised against her will in Santander, while Spain was under Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Carrington suffered a mental breakdown as a response to the outbreak of WWII and the arrest and deportation of her partner, Max Ernst. The account of her journey into madness is presented in her memoir of illness Down Below (1943). In 1964, the Italian poet Alda Merini was hospitalised in Milan at the request of her husband, as the result of a violent fight. From that day, Merini would spend ten years in and out of hospital, until the Basaglia Law closed the asylums at the end of the 1970s. Merini’s experience in the asylum is narrated in her memoir L’altra verità. Diario di una diversa (1986). By analysing Carrington’s and Merini’s memoirs of illness as feminist narratives, this study seeks to explore what the cross-cultural and interdisciplinary comparison of the writings of two women creators who experienced psychiatric hospitalisation in 20th century Europe tells us about the relationship between mental health and the construction of female subjectivity in a society that stigmatises mental illness and oppresses women. The two main themes to have emerged out of this critical comparison are that there is a nexus between the transformation of the hellish space of the asylum into a sacred and liminal place, and the conversion of the authors’ ordeal into a journey of mystical ascent. I argue that the two memoirs can be read as examples of both ‘scriptotherapy’ and écriture féminine, in which Carrington and Merini are able to merge the therapeutic and political functions that characterise these forms of writing to create empowering narratives that are subversive in scope. Ultimately, I argue that the theories presented in this thesis could be conceived of as a more wide-raging framework within which other underexplored autobiographies of illness written by women might be examined.

▼ A particular range of sounds express the presence and power of the god Dionysos. &Bgr;ϱóμιoς, an epithet almost exclusively applied to Dionysos, especially connotes powerful sounds from the natural world, frenetic sounds, and sounds construed as foreign. The kind of noise conveyed by the name &Bgr;ϱóμιoς is created in the ecstatic worship of Dionysos, generating an aurally-defined mobile and temporary Dionysiac space that blurs boundaries and infringes upon other types of spaces. Dionysiac sound conveys the vitality associated with Dionysos and provides a mechanism for his epiphany. Accounting for Dionysos’ relationship with sound allows for new readings of Bacchae and Frogs. The aural aspects of Bacchae provide a counterpoint to its rich visual imagery. Pentheus threatens to silence Dionysos and remains oblivious to the importance of sound in Dionysiac worship. When he dresses as a maenad, he assumes only the visual aspects of the cult. Pentheus’ screams are incorporated into the Dionysiac soundscape before he dies, silenced forever. Aristophanes’ Frogs subverts the usual relationship between Dionysos and sound in a way that emphasizes the comical stereotype of the god as weak and incompetent. In particular, both choruses present Dionysiac sound to an oblivious Dionysos. He is irritated by the frogs and enthralled by the initiates.

▼ Developed from the similarity between exile theory and age studies, the term "exile" is expanded to a natural form of exile because of the shocking temporal shift that reconstructs social interaction, familial dynamics, and the aging body. Using Heidegger's theoretical work Being in Time, Simon de Beauvoir's The Coming of Age, and Jean Améry's On Aging as insight, this literary analysis captures how the elderly protagonists Goyo from Cristina García's King of Cuba, Máximo from Ana Menéndez's "In Cuba I was a German Shepherd," and Soledad from Cecilia Rodríguez Milanés's "Abuela Marielita" experience a natural exile among society, their family and within their own body. These areas express how the elderly's sense of displacement equates that of a political/geographical exile.

▼ This exploratory study examines the use of modal verbs and pronouns in medication packageinserts (MPIs). The study focuses on the translation of MPIs from English to Swedish. MPIsare leaflets that provide information about medications. They are divided into two sections: aprovider section and a patient section. The results of the study show that modal verbs andpronouns are more common in the patient section compared to the provider section. This ismost likely due to the two sections having different main functions. The provider sectionaims to inform, whereas the patient section aims to direct. One of the differences noted in thetranslation of MPIs is that modal verbs are more frequent in the Swedish provider sectioncompared to the English provider section. One explanation for this is that hedging isgenerally more common in English than in Swedish. With hedging, passive constructions andagentless sentences are sometimes used instead of modal verbs (Kranich 2011:80). A seconddifference noted is the lack of one-to-one translation relating to modal verbs. Context andculture become deciding factors when electing which modal verb to use in a translation.Should, for example, has at least three different translations in Swedish depending on themodal verb strength that needs to be conveyed. In regard to pronouns, the main differencebetween English and Swedish is the fact that English MPIs have started to use I in the patientsection of the MPI in an attempt to engage the patient in a fictional question-answer scenario.Swedish MPIs have stayed with using du for a more informal conversation style address.

▼ Concerning the Eccentricities of Cardinal Pirelli by Ronald Firbank and Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf both liberate the text from the expected form to engage emotional awareness and instigate reform of societal standards. Employing Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of the carnivalesque and grotesque realism as a means to create this perspective is unconventional; nevertheless, Firbank, predominantly misunderstood, and Woolf, more regarded but largely misinterpreted, both address sexuality and religion to parody what they believe to be the retrogression of civilization by narrating christenings, pageants, and other forms of carnival. Both novels forefront nonconformity, and the conspicuous influence of debasement is identified as a form of salient renewal. Christopher Ames, Melba-Cuddy Keane, and Alice Fox have already expressed remarkable insight into Woolf; unfortunately not a single scholar has approached Firbank’s text in this manner, and this essay discusses the value of both authors in the aspect of Bakhtin’s theories.
