ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to investigate the culture of teaching and learning in selected Secondary Schools in Zimbabwe. It was addressing the numerous pleas within the Ministry of Education and by other stakeholders, to review the O-level curriculum, to monitor and improve the O-level results and to reduce dropouts at that level. Effective school programmes hold school culture and climate accountable, and as the most influential factors that could facilitate the process of change. This study is a situational analysis of the culture ofteaching and learning in two selected schools in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The headmasters of the two schools, selected teachers and students were interviewed regarding the culture ofteaching and learning in their respective schools. The culture was revisited from as far back as the dual system of education during the colonial period in Rhodesia through post-independence in Zimbabwe in the 1980s, to the present. It was also traced from the time the sample schools were established to date. The schools are anonymous and they are referred to as Schools A and B. The situation analysis revealed that a healthy culture of teaching and learning exists in School A, but leaves room for improvement. A breakdown of this culture in school B is evident and an immediate restoration is imperative. The primary cause supported by literature review is ineffective school leadership. Other responsible factors are demotivated teachers, poor parental involvement and demoralised students. There is still hope for the culture in School B to improve because of the recent move by the government to allow schools to collect their own fees. Of course, this still leaves the main problem of leadership and uncommitted staff unresolved. Students might have a full time counsellor to meet their social needs. The study initially, states the problem and presents research questions which are answered in the study. Then the historical background of the dual education system and how it affected and still contributes to the culture of teaching and learning, follows. The methodology used in the study, the review of literature interview responses, findings and guidelines for restoring the culture of teaching and learning simultaneously follow. Finally, the study presents suggested recommendations and topics for further study and the short comings of the research.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is onderneem im ondersoek in te stel na die leerkultuur in geselekteerde sekondrere skole in Zimbabwe. Dit inkorpereer die groot aantal versoeke va kie Minesterie van Onderwys en ander belanghebbendes om die O-vlak-kurrikulum te hersiem, te moniteer en te verbeter en om die aantal kandidate wat op daardie vlak uitsak te probeer verminder. ▼ The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of training status and exercise intensity on the volume of repetitions completed before propulsive force output decreases below 90 percent of maximum force output. We also examined the effect of training status and exercise intensity on the change in eccentric rate of force development (E-RFD) and contact time (CT) across exercise repetitions (depicted as the slope of the regression line relating the E-RFD and repetitions, and the slope relating CT for each repetition completed). Thirty subjects were recruited from the university population (15 plyometrically trained and 15 recreationally trained). Testing took place on two separate days. On day one of testing subjects completed a dynamic warm up, jump assessment, 1RM leg press, and six maximal effort jumps. On day two of testing subjects completed a dynamic warm up along with continuous low (counter movement jumps) and moderate (box jumps at 25% of subjects height) intensity plyometric exercises that were randomly assigned. A regression analysis of E-RFD and CT was used to observe the trends across all repetitions for both intensities in both subject groups. Repetitions completed in each condition were broken into quartiles for each subject, and mean quartiles were analyzed for E-RFD and CT to observe the trends between the two groups at each intensity. The statistical analysis used within the present study were two three-way mixed factors analyses of variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the effect of exercise intensity, repetition quartile, and training status on E-RFD and CT. The results of the regression analysis for E-RFD and CT for the CMJ and box jumps revealed that there was a great deal of variability between the recreationally trained and the plyometrically trained subjects when looking that the positive and negative slopes of the regression lines. The quartile analysis for E-RFD and CT revealed difference in the rate of decline in E-RFD and CT between the plyometrically and recreationally trained subjects across the four quartiles. The statistical quartile analysis for E-RFD revealed a significant exercise by quartile interaction (p = .03) with the simple effects revealing a significant difference in ERFD between quartile 3 (p = .01) and quartile 4 (p < .001). The statistical quartile analysis for CT revealed a significant quartile by group interaction (p = .009) with the simple effects revealing a significant effect of quartile on contact time (p = .002) in the recreationally trained group. A significant exercise by group interaction (p = .047) was also revealed with the simple effects showing a significant difference in contact time between exercises in both the plyometrically trained (p = .021) and recreationally trained (p < .001) groups. These findings indicate that there were differences in E-RFD and CT when comparing regression and quartile analysis of the trained and recreationally trained groups at the two different intensities of plyometric exercises. ▼ This study was conducted in an effort to determine if a linear or nonlinear periodized resistance training program had a greater tendency to contribute to a state of overreaching over 8 weeks. Simple outcome measures were used in an effort to determine the onset of overreaching. These measures included average sleeping heart rate, standing broad jump, 10- yard dash, seated medicine ball throw, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), one repetition maximum (1RM) back squat, and 1RM bench press. The participants were 25 (18 female and 7 male) college students in the Kinesiology major at Western Washington University. Subjects were separated into one of three groups: a control, linear periodized (LP), or nonlinear periodized (DUP) training group. After 8 weeks both training groups significantly increased their 1RM back squat and bench press (p<0.05). The DUP group increased their mean 1RM bench press and back squat from 46.30 ±18.47 kg to 50.83 ±19.26 kg and 67.15 ±20.54 kg to 79.34 ± 23.80 kg, respectively. The LP group increased their mean 1RM bench press and back squat from 46.82 ± 25.96 kg to 51.14 ± 25.87 kg and 74.77 ± 33.22 kg to 84.09 ± 30.10 kg, respectively. All groups significantly improved (p<0.05) their standing long jump performance over the course of the study. The control group improved from a mean of 1.86 ± 0.13 m to 2.04 ± 0.17 m, LP from 1.89 ± 0.40 m to 2.03 ± 0.41 m, and DUP from 1.87 ± 0.42 m to 1.99 ± 0.40 m. Only the DUP group significantly improved their seated medicine ball throw performance (p<0.05) from a mean of 4.09 ± 0.78 m to 4.46 ± 0.69 m. The LP and DUP groups significantly decreased (p<0.05) their 10-yard dash times from a mean of 1.85 sec ± 0.15 to 1.75 sec ± 0.18 and 1.84 sec ± 0.14 to 1.77 sec ±0.14, respectively. Average sleeping heart rate and RPE did not change significantly in any group. The lack of a significant decrease in performance measures or increase in average sleeping heart rate or RPE in either training group caused the null hypothesis to be accepted. ▼ Research on mental toughness has gained momentum in the past decade, yet there is still a need for exploration of the topic and definition, especially from a developmental perspective. This study explored the influence of mental toughness on the performance of elite intercollegiate athletes by considering the mental skills athletes used to achieve success in their sport; consideration was also paid to the developmental aspects of the athletes. This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 NCAA Division II All-American athletes using pre-determined questions related to the following content categories: developmental aspects, peak performance and flow, general performance characteristics, mental toughness, confidence, achievement motivation and passion for sport, coping with adversity, and performing effectively under pressure. Content analysis identified 418 raw data themes, from which 68 general themes were identified. Further content analysis resulted in 28 emergent themes which were grouped into the following umbrella categories: experiences, motivation, cognitive processes, success related mental skills, and mental toughness attributes. Several developmental aspects, mental skills, and mental toughness attributes were discovered as universal to all or the majority of the athletes who were interviewed. Based on the content analysis results, a definition for mental toughness is proposed. The athletes were also administered the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory - 28 as a quantitative measure of the mental skills used to achieve success in sport. The results obtained from this inventory were used in a descriptive manner. As a group, the athletes scored highest on the subscales of confidence and achievement motivation, coachability, and concentration. ▼ PREVALENCE and RATIONALE OF CREATINE USE IN DIII NCAA ATHLETESRAQUISHA BAILEYABSTRACTAthletes often seek out ergogenic aids to improve sport performance. Creatine is one of the most popular supplements consumed among young athletes. At the Division III level of collegiate sports, certain perceptions or influences have led to or have sustained creatine use in this athletic population and needs to be examined. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of creatine supplementation among Division III collegiate athletes and to summarize educational resources, attitudes, and rationale for its use across gender and sport. In the Spring of 2007, 61 Division III varsity athletes football (39/61), basketball (10/61), baseball (4/61), soccer (3/61), swimming (2/61), track and field athletes (2/61), and wrestling (1/61) representing John Carroll University, Cleveland, OH completed an anonymous questionnaire regarding creatine supplementation. The subjects (female, n = 6; male, n = 55) ranged in age from 18 to 24 years (mean = 20.6 years). Athletes that admitted to current creatine use completed a Likert scaled assessment of attitude toward creatine use. Survey results revealed that 16.4% (10/61) of athletes were current users of creatine while 42.6% (26/61) athletes admitted to past creatine use. Males were more likely than females to be current users of creatine. Of the total athletes sampled (61), only 10 (16.4%) admitted to current use, and all 10 were football players. The earliest initiation of creatine supplementation was reported at 15 years. Trends in the data suggested that male athletes participating in contact-collision based sports are more likely than females to use creatine as an ergogenic aid to enhance performance. Participants received the bulk of their creatine information from two reported sources: the internet and GNC stores, as opposed to athletic support staff (ie. physician, strength coach, dietitian, athletic trainer, etc.). Athletes need accurate information about ergogenic supplements and their associated risks including proper dosing and instruction. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study attempted to present a nuanced perspective on the frames of mind of teachers regarding the term sustainable development and the way it impacts on their educational practices. In the study, the researcher investigated the frames of mind of six Grade nine teachers teaching the Social Sciences and Natural Sciences learning areas at three different high schools in the Stellenbosch vicinity. The research report comprises two components, namely (a) a theoretical-philosophical component, and (b) an empirical component. The aim of the theoretical component was to explore the idea of “sustainable development as a frame of mind” critically. This was done firstly, by emphasizing the controversial nature of the term sustainable development, secondly, to present more clarity on the term frame of mind, and lastly, to integrate the two concepts by discussing the potential and development of “sustainable development as a frame of mind”, as well as the implications this has for education. Against the background of frames of mind and sustainable development, I critically analysed the South African curriculum statements of the Social Sciences and Natural Sciences learning areas for Grade nine, in order to determine which frames of mind regarding the phenomenon under investigation are most dominant within the statements. Teachers are confronted with these statements on a regular basis and the assumption is that frames of mind prevalent in the statements might have an impact on their frames of mind. This assumption was further explored in the interviews that were conducted with teachers, in an attempt not only to determine their frames of mind, but also to understand these. Therefore, it was important to determine the possible influences (experiences, role players, reading materials, etc.) that played a role (or are still playing) in the shaping of their frames of mind as these factors might serve as important points of departure in offering suggestions and recommendations for in-service teachers as well as for pre-service teachers. This study served as a confirmation of the controversy regarding the term sustainable development and the effect it has on teachers and the education system itself. The study also shows that the possibility of “sustainable development as a frame of mind” is locked up in the complexity of this idea.

▼ The current study was conducted to determine if inspiratory muscle training (IMT) has an effect on anaerobic power during the final sprint phase of a time trial in trained cyclists. Twenty three trained cyclists were included in the data and were randomly assigned to one of two groups, a training or placebo group. Each group performed IMT, but the training group performed at 85% of their maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) while the placebo group trained at 15%. MIP was measured pre and post training. One 15 km time trial was performed pre and post IMT. Heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and arterial oxygen-hemoglobin saturation (SaO2) were recorded every five minutes during the time trial. Immediately following the 15 km time trial each subject performed a 30 second Wingate Anaerobic Test to measure anaerobic power. A two way ANOVA with one repeated factor was applied to test for differences across the tests and between the two groups. The results showed no significant increase in peak anaerobic power in either group. There was, however, a significant main effect for time in mean anaerobic power in both groups (placebo group increased 529.6 ±124.6 watts to 574.4 ± 99.3 and 612.3 ±81.7 watts to 632 ± 81.7 watts in the training group). There was a significant main effect for time when measuring the average SaO2 values in both the placebo and training group from 94.8 ±2.1 % to 95.3 ±1.8 % and 93.8 ± 1.9 % to 95.1 ± 1.6 %, respectively. MIP showed a significant main effect for time in both the placebo and training group from 110 ±40 cmH2O to 150 ±40 cmH2O and 130 ±30 cmH2O to 160 ± 20 cmH2O, respectively. There was no significant main effect over time for RPE, HR, or time trial time in either group. Six weeks of IMT, whether at 15% or 85% of MIP, can improve MIP, and mean anaerobic power during the final sprint phase of a time trial.
