The present thesis concerns the ecology of the Black-crowned Night heron(Nycticorax nycticorax). It was worked out through the years 1995-1996 at the Kerkini reservoir of Serres. An artificial lake constructed in order to regulate the floodwater supply of the Strymon River, to control sediment deposition and to provide an irrigation reservoir for the Serres agricultural plain. At Kerkini there can be found one of the largest heronries of the Mediterranean that is facing serious problems mainly due to fluctuation of the water level. Up until 1995 heron breeding came about in two colonies (one in the old riverbed and one in the new riverbed of the Strymon) in which apart from the Black-crowned Night heron, nest Pygmy cormorants, Little egrets, Squacco herons, Spoonbills etc. In 1996 the heronry found on the west bank of the old riverbed was abandoned.Black-crowned Night herons arrive at the wetland in the second third of Marchand roost in the riverside forest, in places that will later on make up the nest sites. The number of breeding pairs varied from 900 to 980 during the years that the study lasted. The laying period begins by the end of March until the middle of April during which the ground has been flooded by water to depths 30 - 50 cm. The nests are built within dense tree vegetation (salix sp.) at a mean height of 2,58 - 3,38 above ground. The mean clutch size varied from 3,56 in 1995 to 3,61 in 1996. Egg losses in A colony in 1995 was 53,19% of egg total while in Β colony the respective percentage varied from 5,20% (1995) to 9,83% (1996). The major cause of egg losses was nestflooding. The mean number of nestlings having survived until the age of 18 days was 2,44 in 1995 and 3,23 in 1996, while the losses in A colony in 1995 was 36,92% and in Β colony they varied from 5,20% (1995) to 14,74 (1996). The nestling losses were mainly due to nest floodings. The lake's water level during 1995 increased gradually up to 36,33 m a.s.I. (27/05) which resulted in a great number of nest floodings. On the contrary in 1996 the lake's water level increased suddenly the first half of April reaching 35,75 m a.s.I. on 15/04 and therefore the Black-crowned Night herons built nests higher up and so had greater breeding success.The first hatched nestlings grew up better than the next. Bill length is suggested as the most suitable measurement to estimate the age of the Black-crowned Nightheron. Black-crowned Night herons feed mainly at night time except during breeding season whereas they feed throughout the daytime. They wait for quite some time hiding in the vegetation or in the lower branches of trees over the water, seeking out their prey while making few attempts to capture it. They hardly move at all and rarely hunt their prey on foot. Monthly and forthnightly samplings were taken between April 1989 and November 1991 for the study of biology and population dynamics of freshwater pulmonate gastropods in lake Kerkini. The study was carried out in the old river bed of Strymonas river, in the northern part of the lake, where three different pulmonate species coexisted, P. acuta, L. stagnalis and L. auricularia. The seasonal variation of the water temperature in the lake was the same throughout the three years of the study. Dissolved oxygen in the water, during 1991 ranged between 2 and 8 mg/ l reaching the lowest values in the summer and the highest in autumn. pH values ranged between 7.25 and 9.5 and conductivity between 250 and 480 μs/cm. . Total hardness values ranged between 80 and 250 mg CaCO3/ l , therefore water can be characterized as medium hard to hard. Variation was noted in the concentration of orthophosphate (from 0.01 to 0.10 mg/ l) and chloride (from 3 to 17.9 mg/ l) in the water during 1991, while the highest values in both cases appeared in summer and autumn. In the present study a quantitative sampler was used for plant and pulmonate samples from different depths. The abudance of the three pulmonate species was estimated in relation to the water volume at different water depths, as well as their horizontal and vertical distribution. Seasonal variation of the relative distribution by λ2 index showed that spatial distribution of all three species appeared contagious on water surface with the exception of early spring for L. stagnalis. For the later species more samples appeared with a random distribution in relation to water depth. The distribution of L. stagnalis and L. auricularia was contagious on the water surface but random in the deeper layers.

Στο χρονικό διάστημα Aπρίλιος 1989 - Nοέμβριος 1991 πραγματοποιήθηκαν δεκαπενθήμερες και μηνιαίες δειγματοληψίες για τη μελέτη της βιολογίας και της δυναμικής των πληθυσμών των πνευμονοφόρων γαστεροπόδων της λίμνης Kερκίνης. H έρευνα έγινε στην παλιά κοίτη του ποταμού Στρυμώνα στο βόρειο τμήμα της λίμνης όπου συνυπήρχαν τρία είδη πνευμονοφόρων : η P. acuta η L. stagnalis και η L. auricularia. H εποχική διακύμανση της θερμοκρασίας του νερού της λίμνης ήταν όμοια και τα 3 χρόνια της μελέτης. Tο διαλυμένο στο νερό O2 στη διάρκεια του 1991 κυμάνθηκε από 2 έως 8 mg/ l με τις χαμηλότερες τιμές να εμφανίζονται το καλοκαίρι και τις υψηλότερες την άνοιξη και το φθινόπωρο. Tο pH κυμάνθηκε από 7.25 έως 9.5 και η αγωγιμότητα του νερού από 250 έως 480 μs/cm. Oι τιμές της ολικής σκληρότητας του νερού κυμάνθηκαν από 80 έως 250 mg CaCO3/ l και έτσι τα νερά χαρακτηρίστηκαν απο μετρίως σκληρά έως σκληρά. Στη διάρκεια του 1991 καταγράφηκε έντονη μεταβολή της περιεκτικότητας του νερού σε ορθοφωσφορικά (από 0.01 έως 0.10 mg/ l) και σε ιόντα χλωρίου (από 3 έως 17.9 mg/ l), ενώ οι υψηλότερες τιμές και στις δυο περιπτώσεις εμφανίστηκαν το καλοκαίρι. The present study refers to the ecology of pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus (L.)), a recently introduced species at the ecosystem of the artificial lake Kerkini of Serres prefecture in Greece. The physicochemical characteristics of this biotope were studied and specifically: the temperature, the conductivity, the clarity of water, the dissolved oxygen, the pH, the total hardness, the sulfuric, the orthophosphates, the nitrogen compounds (ammonia.nitrogen, nitrates, nitrites), the chlorophyll.a and the biological oxygen demand (B.O.D.5). The structure of zooplankton community of the lake was also studied, as well as the factors that affect it during the year and the dominance of trochozoans at the population was found out. The study of benthic organisms at the two stations of sampling demonstrated the differences of the population composition in the lake, which are significantly influenced by the composition of the bottom sediments. The benthos of the lake was dominated by water warms of the genus Lumbriculus and Tubifex as well as water insects. larvae. The sampling of the 1095 specimens of pumpkinseed was carried out by monthly efforts with the use of fluke nets. The age determination was based on scale.s annual ring formation counting and the time of those rings formation was found to occur in January. The older pumpkinseed specimen was found to be eight years old. The annual growth of pumpkinseed was calculated for length as well as for weight based upon the observed as well as the calculated values, according to the method of backcalculation growth. The application of this method was based on the relationship of the fork length to the scale radius. It was found out that males overcome female.s fork length in most of age and length classes. The maximum annual growth, which was found to be 40,59 mm, was observed during the first year of their lives. The final length (L?) that pumpkinseed can attain in lake Kerkini was calculated to be 270,61 mm for males and 202,24 for females. By the length.weight relationship it was found that pumpkinseed.s growth is allometric. By the Clark.s condition factor calculation it was found that the females. values are higher than the males. ones and the gain occurs from May to September for both sexes. The sexual dimorphism was examined and it was found that there is a statistical difference between male.s and female.s pelvic fins length. Bigger pelvic fins probably serve males to the reproduction procedure. The study of the reproduction, carried out on ready for reproduction females, according Kesteven.s index, showed out that the age of first maturity for pumpkinseed in lake Kerkini is 2,53 years. The reproduction period starts from May until August, considering the multiple spawning behavior of the species. The fecundity was studied according to the gravimetric method. Mean absolute fecundity was calculated to be 1,952 eggs, and relative fecundity to 260 eggs/g of body weight.
