▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of intrauterine position and its possibly resultant steroid differential on conceptus growth and steroid content in allantoic and amniotic fluid of pigs. six conceptus variables (placental weight, placental length, fetal weight, fetal length, allantoic fluid volume and amniotic fluid volume) and seven steroids (progesterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, testosterone, estrone and estrone sulfate) were evaluated. Four fetal positions were studied: females between females (f2F), females between males (fOF) , males between females (m2F) and males between males (mOF).
Fetuses examined from ovariectomized (OVX) pregnenolone (PS)-treated gilts showed differences in placental
weight, allantoic fluid estrone and androstenedione content and amniotic fluid androstenedione content as a result of intrauterine position. Fetuses from OVX gilts treated with either medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) I or progesterone (P4) showed differences in placental length due to intrauterine position. Allantoic and amniotic fluid content of any of the steroids studied from OVX MPA- and P4-treated gilts was not altered as a result of intrauterine position. Intrauterine position appears to have a definite influence on conceptus development and possibly on steroid content. However, discrepancies' of results among trials possibly as a result of differences in type and amount of exogenous precursor enable us to draw stronger conclusions on the intrauterine position effect.

▼ A 2 x 2 x 4 factorial experiment utilizing 640 male Large White turkeys was conducted
to determine the effects of neonatal/juvenile heat stress and tryptophan supplementation upon
growth to 129 days of age, as well as meat quality and brain neurotransmitter levels.
Treatments consisted of neonatal heat stress (36 continuous hours at 38 C) starting at 5 days
of age, juvenile heat stress (8 hours a day at 38 C for 5 consecutive days) starting at 106 days
of age, and tryptophan supplementation (0, .1, .2, and .3 % added to the diet) from 112 days
of age to market (129 or 138 days of age). Feed consumption, weight gain, and mortality were
l recorded and selected meat quality measurements and brain neurotransmitter levels were
determined. Weight gain and feed consumption were significantly reduced by juvenile heat
stress treatment while early stress, late stress (EL) treatment significantly increased mortality
as compared to CC treatment during this period. Such findings revealed that neonatal heat
stress did not reduce losses due to heat stress at market age. After live haul, (129 days of
age), EC birds had significantly greater cooking loss as compared to birds of the other three
treatments and CC birds had significantly larger thigh weights than EL treated birds. In birds
analyzed at 138 days of age, CL treatment resulted in a significantly higher Hunter L-value
(lightness) in pectoralis major tissue as compared to CC treatment, indicating a darkening of
pectoralis musculature due to juvenile heat stress treatment. Tryptophan supplementation
resulted in no significant differences in food intake, body weight, or body weight gain.
Serotonin, 5 hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA), and norepinephrine levels increased linearly
with dietary tryptophan supplementation in the four brain regions analyzed while linear
increases in L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L·DOPA) occurred in all regions analyzed except for
the cerebellum due to Lâ tryptophan supplementation. Plasma levels of serotonin also
increased in a positive dose-response fashion while tryptophan supplementation at all levels
significantly reduced norepinephrine levels as compared to the basal diet. The addition of
.1% tryptophan to the tinisher diet significantly increased carcass weight and thigh weights
while no significant differences occurred in breast protein and ether extract, or in either
pectoralis major and biceps femoris shear or Hunter color values due to supplemental
tryptophan.

▼ A model for optimizing the assignment of maintenance actions for a piece of equipment
is developed in the thesis. The model considers the detectability and the criticality of
component failure in order to assign a maintenance instruction. The thesis also develops
the framework for an integrated maintenance management system. The system consists
of three modules. The first module is work control. It is used to prepare, schedule, and
insure the execution of maintenance instructions. The second module is the equipment
condition control module which monitors maintenance effectiveness and accordingly
updates the maintenance instructions. The third module is cost control. This is the tool
used to monitor the economical performance of the maintenance function. An equipment
information system is also presented, and two futuristic maintenance proposals are
introduced.
The model and the integrated maintenance management system, constitute a strong tool,
that equipment managers can use to optimize the maintenance function, and improve
the mechanical, operational, and economical performance of equipment.

▼ The introduction of composite materials and the ability to tailor these materials to
improve aerodynamic and structural performance is having a distinct effect upon
aircraft design. In order to optimize the efficiency of the design procedure, a design
process which is more integrated than the traditional approach is required. Currently
the utilization of such design procedures produces enormous computational costs.
An ongoing effort to reduce these costs is the development of efficient methods for
cross-disciplinary sensitivities and approximate optimization techniques.
The present research concentrates on investigating the integrated design
optimization of a subsonic, forward-swept transport wing. A modular sensitivity
approach for calculating the cross-sensitivity derivatives is employed. These
derivatives are then used to guide the optimization process. The optimization
process employed is an approximate technique due to the complexity of the analysis
procedures. These optimization results are presented and the impact of the modular
technique is discussed.

▼ The geology of Frederick County, Virginia is known mostly from surface mapping. Based
on this work are interpretations of the subsurface geology including cross sections which have
been constrained by the surface geology and by the method of area balancing based upon
palinspastic reconstruction. With the intent to further constrain these cross sections. gravity
measurements were made at 422 sites in Frederick County. Then, gravity anomalies were
compared with theoretical gravity profiles calculated from two dimensional models of density
distribution based upon the cross sections.
Using the cross section geometry and densities published for the known and inferred rock
units, the theoretical gravity profiles did not compare favorably with corresponding Bouguer
gravity profiles. However, by modifying the geometry of the model units and adjusting the
model unit densities, a reasonable fit between theoretical and Bouguer gravity profiles was
obtained. Although the geometrical modifications adhered to the structural style, no attempt
was made to area balance these modifications within the model.

▼ Lake Manassas is a man-made impoundment in the Northern
Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. The lake currently
supplies drinking water at a rate of 6.7 million gallons per
day to the City of Manassas, Virginia. The lake discharges,
via the stream Broad Run, to the Occoquan Reservoir. The
Occoquan Reservoir supplies potable water to over 750,000
people in the Northern Virginia area.
As the population of Washington, D.C., continues to increase, the development of the surrounding suburbs changes the quality of surface runoff water into existing reservoirs. These reservoirs can become enriched with both toxic and biomass inducing nutrient pollutants. The result
can be less desirable and less dependable supplies of drinking water.
A State of Virginia mandated Environmental Monitoring Program is in force in this area to ensure the Occoquan Watershed remains a dependable supply of potable water. A computerized database, containing the results of the environmental monitoring program, allows for a quantitative estimate of the overall water quality of the reservoirs to
be made.
This thesis presents the results of a limnological
analysis of Lake Manassas. The analysis techniques used are established limnological techniques to arrive at a profile which can be compared to accepted scales of ranking.
One conclusion from the analysis is that Lake Manassas is eutrophic, which means that the production of biomass in the lake is at a higher than desired rate. The result of this eutrophic condition is that the water quality of the
lake will decline rather rapidly. Another conclusion is that Broad Run is the major supplier of nutrients into Lake
Manassas, but that conditions are also affected by a point source discharge from a sewage treatment plant. These conclusions are consistent with previous studies done on Lake Manassas.
In summary, Lake Manassas is an important water
resource in the Northern Virginia area, and it is important to continue to closely monitor and manage runoff practices in the watershed to ensure the lake does not degrade to unacceptable conditions.

▼ The relative effectiveness of noncontiguous cartograms,
in presenting data were tested over a continumm of tasks
ranging from general to specific, using university students
as subjects.
A total of three tasks were examined, one task required
subjects to judge cartograms showing a very general
distribution, the second task required a moderate amount of
information to be retrieved, and the third task required
very specific information to be obtained from the cartogram.
Two sets of non contiguous cartograms of the United States
were used; one set had international and internal boundaries
the second set had only international boundaries.
In general students performed task one and two with a
great deal of accuracy, proving non contiguous cartograms are
a useful method of displaying geographic information. The
third task was less successful than the first two, although
this fact is not surprising, we learned that when displaying
and trying to retrieve very specific kinds of information,
the non contiguous cartogram is not a viable option.

▼ Soil moisture distribution resulting from a line source subsurface trickle irrigation system
was studied on bare and cropped layered soils. The soil type was an Uchee loamy sand.
The Continuous System Modeling Program (CSMP) Model was used to simulate the soil
moisture distribution resulting from the linesource. The model was modified and developed in
FORTRAN programming language. The modification included the effects of layered soil, source
position, number of sources, soil evaporation and plant transpiration. The model was also used to
simulate daily and one-in-several-days irrigations.
Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the soil moisture retention
curve, the hydraulic conductivity, and soil moisture distribution from the line source. This data was
used for model verification with the lateral lines buried 13 inches below the soil surface and spaced
36 and 72 inches apart. Simulated and measured soil moisture distributions were in good agreement.
Simulated moisture distribution indicated that the wetting front expansion is more a function
of irrigation volume than irrigation rate. However, the irrigation rate does affect the soil moisture
distribution. A higher rate will result in a larger quantity of horizontal water movement. The simulation also indicated that a one-in-ten days irrigation causes more horizontal movement than a
daily irrigation.

▼ To determine the effect of estrogen on weight changes in women, eight
adult females were followed for a period of six months subsequent to hysterectomy or ovariohysterectomy. Three groups comprised the study: 1) a hysterectomy or control group, 2) an ovariohysterectomy group with estrogen replacement therapy, and 3) an ovariohysterectomy without estrogen treatment group. Body weight, caloric intake, and activity level were recorded for the eight prospective subjects over the six
month period. Weight data were gathered from past medical records on
an additional 19 patients meeting the treatment criteria. Weight changes
between groups were not statistically significant. A trend in weight
changes among the groups was noted. The hysterectomy group lost five
pounds, ovariohysterectomy treated group lost one pound and the untreated group, 0.2 pound. The same trend in weight changes was noted
when data from prospective and retrospective subjects were combined. Caloric intake and activity levels did not explain all changes noted.
Detailed information on subjects was presented as case studies. The results supported the concept that endogenous estrogen protects against
weight gain; evidence did not support the comparable action of exogenous estrogen. Subjects having ovariohysterectomy stated that they
experienced appetite changes such as cravings for sweets, undesirable muscle tone and body contour changes, and difficulty in ability to control weight. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to determine direct relationships between female hormones and suppression
of weight gain in women.

▼ The purpose of the research was to describe the relationship of
nutrition/consumption to agricultural production and related areas in the
diagnosis and preliminary design of project activities and to describe
the contributions of a nutrition focus to problem identification, grouping
and treatment selection compared with an agricultural focus.
A multidisciplinary team integrated the nutrition/consumption perspective into the rapid community assessment for planning (RCAP) by
incorporating topic areas, observational items and questions in each of
five stages in the community diagnosis.
Three problems in subsistence food production and consumption were among the top five priority problems. Differences in problems
between the team and the community were attributed to differing perspectives.
Compared with the agriculture RCAP, nutrition-related problems were reported only to a limited degree and their rankings were generally lower.
Seasonality was a particularly important linkage, along with income, labor, enterprise mix and markets. Groups of farm families based mainly
on farming system shared production-related but not nutrition-related characteristics. The household characteristics most useful for research
domain subgroups were agroecology, produce disposal, resources and food and income gaps. Nutrition/consumption information enabled the
team to plan separate research designs for groups of families with similar conditions.
Production factors identified for investigation related to the priority problem of food crop production included crop protection, soil improvement, pest and disease control and overall plot design. Nutrition/
consumption aspects related to research trials included: selection of crops and varieties for filling food, income and nutrient gaps; and other
nutrition-related areas of sanitation, labor and post-harvest storage, many of which were established based on nutrition information integrated
into the RCAP. Areas for ex ante analysis included food preferences,
sanitation and womenâ s time conflicts. The nutrition focus contributed
information important for problem identification, grouping and
treatment selection.

▼ This thesis deals with the design and construction of a variable geometry truss (VGT) of the double-octahedral (pyramid-pyramid) geometry. The truss is expected to be the focus of several experimental research projects. In this thesis, a kinematic model is formulated, and the forward and inverse kinematic problems are solved. Issues of motor and instrumentation choices are addressed. Dimensional choices and the important problems of joint design are examined. A computer simulation is performed for force and vibration analysis.
A fully collapsible double-octahedral variable geometry truss with three degrees of freedom was built using NC machining technologies. An improved second generation twenty-one degree-of-freedom truss will be built based on this original test article.

▼ CREAMS-NT, a modified version of the field-scale model for Chemicals, Runoff, and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems (CREAMS) model, was developed to simulate the nitrogen (N) transformations and subsequent nutrient transport processes which occur in the soil following organic waste applications. CREAMS-NT accounts for nutrient addition through fertilization and rainfall and losses of N by volatilization, denitrification, plant uptake, leaching, and overland flow. Data required by CREAMS-NT includes runoff volume, sediment yield, percolation, and soil environmental conditions which is generated by the hydrologic and erosion components of the original CREAMS model. The mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, ar1d volatilization processes are simulated using firstâ order knetic equations adjusted for the effects of soil environmental conditions including temperature, moisture, pH, soil/sludge contact, and soil cation exchange capacity. Prior to a runoff event, soil ammnonium-N (NH4 â N) is partitioned between adsorbed and desorbed phases. CREAMS-NT predicts the transport of organic-N, NH4 â N, and sediment=bound phosphorus (P3b) in runoff using enrichment ratios. The transport of soluble nutrients, nitrate-N (NO3 â N), NH4 â N, and soluble P (PTF), is estimated using extraction coefficients.

▼ This research quantifies specific cash price premiums and discounts associated with various characteristics of slaughter cattle in Virginia. Econometric models of Virginia slaughter cattle basis were developed for each practical combination of sex and market by differentials in weight, grade, breed, lot size, order of sale of a particular lot, number of cattle in a particular sale, and a seasonal indicator based on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) live cattle futures contract month.
Explanatory models were found to account for 41 to 64 percent of the variation in slaughter cattle basis for steers and 35 to 47 percent of the variation in slaughter cattle basis for heifers. Results explain over 30 percent more of basis variation than previous research. These basis estimates reduce basis error and hedging risk and potentially offer Virginia cattlemen the means to initiate effective slaughter cattle hedging programs. Furthermore, the implementation of a forward pricing agency which uses estimated basis values may provide alternatives to facing basis risk when selling slaughter cattle in Virginia.
An analysis of basis risk provides some indication of the magnitude of possible exposure facing the average Virginia cattleman when making hedging decisions based on estimation procedures as defined herein. The formation of a forward pricing agency should be contingent upon further analyses of basis risk as outlined in this research.
Investigation of basis estimate residuals concluded that more variability is present as time to contract maturity increases. This information should prove valuable for those involved in trading options on live cattle futures as options expire one month prior to their respective futures contracts.

▼ Podophyllotoxin is an aryltetralin lignan and anticancer agent produced by the <i>Podophyllum</i>
and some other species and is extracted from Podophyllin in up to 30 percent yield. Little definitive
information is available on the biosynthetic pathways to podophyllotoxin. Administering various
specifically labelled precursors into intact plants and tissue cultures can give a much improved
insight into the lignan biogenesis. The first part of the work has been to the synthesis of two
diastereotopically labelled with
2H at C-4. Desoxypodophyllotoxin is the penultimate intermediate of
the podophyllotoxin pathway and specifically labelled compounds can be used for the C-4
hydroxylation studies. Doubly
2H labelled desoxypodophyllotoxin at C-4 was also prepared which
can be used for a control experiment. This work also led to the unambiguous assignment of the
proton nmr of desoxypodophyllotoxin. A second part of the work has been the synthesis of p-coumarlc acid, a known lignan precursor, doubly labeled with
2H or
2H and
13C
at the C-3â position.
This labeling was selected because the availability of a C-3-labeled monomeric precursor would
thus make possible the isolation and study of dimeric compounds labeled at this key positions.
These compounds were synthesized, and their identity and stereochemistry were determined by
spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The isotopic incorporation of these compounds was 95%
d, or d
2 (or greater), as determined by mass spectral analysis.

▼ I studied loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia from April
1987 to April 1988; factors affecting mortality rates wring the breeding season, fall dispersal, and
winter were investigated., The high reproductive, success in this study was similar to that reported
by other researchers in the United States. Reproductive success was different among varying grass
heights and varying amounts of bare soil areas within 100 m of shrike nests; success was highest in
habitats with numerous bare soil areas and medium grass. I radio-harnessed fledglings at a mean
age of 56 days to document dispersal, fall home-range areas, and survival rates. During the
postfledging dispersal period, survival rates were 100% fledglings dispersed at a minimum of 78
days of age, and fall home-ranges typically contained medium grass and numerous bare soil areas.
These habitat characteristics may provide shrikes with increased invertebrate availability. Winter
negatively affected the loggerhead shrike population in Virginia; raptor predation was the primary
cause of subadult and adult mortality, and road kill was secondary. Shrikes moved from grassland
areas to shrub-forest areas during inclement weather and preyed on small birds. Home-range sizes
were larger during the winter than at other times of the year. I documented the occurrence of low
levels of organochlorine and organophosphates in all birds analyzed for pesticide contamination.
Also, I present statistical models to predict age and sex of loggerhead shrikes; wing chord and tail
white on rectrix 5 were the most useful variables in discriminating sexes and wing chord was used
in discriminating ages. More research is needed on the effects of raptors on shrike populations and
on the role of foraging habitat on winter areas.

▼ The widespread contamination of our nation's groundwater has become a major threat to public health. The magnitude of this threat is escalated by our reliance upon groundwater. Groundwater is the primary drinking water source for over 50% of the U.S. population. Groundwater comprises more than 95% of all available freshwater in the
United States.
The objectives of this study were: (1) to make a preliminary assessment of the use of inhibitors to evaluate the biodegradation potential of soil, and (2) to evaluate the significance of each microbial group in the biodegradation process.
Static microcosms containing Newport News and Blacksburg soil were used as the experimental environments. Butyrate and propionate were used as substrates. The metabolic inhibitors used were sodium molybdate (Na.7N1o04) and 2-Bromoethane sulfonic acid (BESA), which inhibit sulfate reduction and methanogenesis, respectively.
Denitrification was suppressed by the absence Of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) in the microcosm dilution water.
Both Newport News and Blacksburg soils were found to be dominated by denitrfying bacteria. In nitrate-amended Newport News microcosms, 300 mg/L butyrate degraded to .zero concentration in 5.5 days. This microcosm's degradation "rate" was 255% greater than non-nitrate amended microcosms, where sulfate reduction was predominant. Little or no methanogenic activity was observed in both the Newport News or Blacksburg soils.
Advantages of this approach are its simplicity and directness in obtaining approximately the same information as more complicated enumeration procedures. A disadvantage of this approach is its reliance on metabolic inhibitors to suppress the microbial activity of specific microbial groups. Little is known on the effect of Na2MoO4
or BESA on the activities of denitrifiers, fermenters, or acetogens.

▼ This work describes the design of an intelligent recognition system used to distinguish noise
signatures of five different acoustic sources. The system uses pattern recognition techniques to
identify the information obtained from a single microphone. A training phase is used in which the
system learns to distinguish the sources and automatically selects features for optimal performance.
Results were obtained by training the system to distinguish jet planes, propeller planes, a helicopter,
train, and wind turbine from one another, then presenting similar sources to the system and
recording the number of errors. These results indicate the system can successfully identify the
trained sources based on acoustic information. Classification errors highlight the impact of the
training sources on the system's ability to recognize different sources.

▼ Mammoth cultivars of tobacco do not flower under normal
production conditions. A field management system must be
devised for these cultivars to optimize agronomic traits
and chemical constituents of the cured leaf. Field
experiments were conducted at the Southern Piedmont
Agricultural Experiment Station near Blackstone, Virginia
in 1987 and 1988 to determine the influence of nitrogen
rate, harvest frequency, and time and number of basal leaf
removal on several agronomic and chemical properties of a
mammoth cultivar of flue-cured tobacco. The feasibility of
chemically topping two mammoth cultivars was also
investigated. Increasing nitrogen rates increased values
per hectere by $176 and total alkaloids by 0.5% in 1987.
Increasing the number of harvest increased percentage lugs (X) and reducing sugars for stalk position B in 1988 but
decreased reducing sugars for stalk positions A and C in
1988. Delaying leaf removal increased yield and values per
hectare by 141 kg ha
-1 and $84, respectively, and
decreased lug production in 1987 and 1988. Total alkaloids
decreased by 0.7% with delayed leaf removal in 1987.
Delayed leaf removal increased reducing sugars at stalk
position A by 2% in 1988. Removing fewer basal leaves
increased yields by 115 kg ha
-1, values per hectare, and
percentage smoking leaf (H) for both years. Alkaloids for
stalk position B increased with fewer basal leaves removed
in 1988. Decreased basal leaf removal decreased plant
height by 9 cm, percentage leaf (B), and reducing sugars in
stalk positions A, B, and D in 1988. Delaying basal leaf
removal and decreasing harvest frequency increased the
percentage of cutters (C). Percentage smoking leaf
increased with nitrogen rate and removal of fewer basal
leaves. Chemical topping created taller plants with more
leaves, narrower tip leaves, lower total alkaloids, and
equal or higher reducing sugars relative to hand topping.
Tip leaves from chemically topped plants were 6 to 8 cm
shorter than hand-topped plants in 1987. Maleic hydrazide
treatments resulted in 429 to 700 kg ha
-1 lower yields and
lower values than hand topping and 6 more suckers than all
other treatments. The fatty alcohol / maleic hydrazide
treatment produced 380 kg ha
-1 higher yields and grade
indices lower than the hand-topped control in 1987. Above
normal nitrogen rate, 3 or 5 time harvest, removal of 4 to
6 leaves at topping or via senescence, and chemical topping
with Prime+ or fatty alcohol / maleic hydrazide tank mix
provided the best field management system for mammoth
cultivars under the conditions of this study.

▼ This thesis presents a simple Real Time Embedded Control System (RTECS) in an
application of Intelligent Structure Monitoring. Research in smart structures, especially the
area of vibration suppression, has warranted the investigation of advanced computing
environments. Real time PC computing power has limited development of high order control
algorithms. The system discussed allows for implementation of l/O intensive algorithms and
provides capability for advanced system development.
In an application of Modal Domain Sensing for Vibration Control, RTECS is compared
to a PC AT based system for overall functionality and speed. Using a model development
procedure, the system is optimized for efficient operation and speed. This includes minimizing the
computational overhead associated with I/O. A comparison shows an order of magnitude I
increase in system speed with larger speed increases discussed. The results provide an avenue
for high order control system design. This leads to more accurate device modeling and a higher
level of system control.
RTECS employs a novel RISC microcontroller capable of 15 MIPs continuous performance
and burst rates of 40 MIPs. Advanced CMOS circuits are integrated on a single printed circuit
board measuring 100 mm by 160 mm and require only 1 Watt of power. An operating system
written in Forth provides the flexibility for high speed operation in short development cycles.

▼ Brucella abortus st. RB51 is a rough mutant of smooth st. 2308 devoid of O-side chain and resistant to rifampin. The purpose of this investigation was to study the behavior and effects of viable st. RB51 organisms in inoculated mice and cattle and to further substantiate the lack of O-side chain antigens in this strain.
A single injection of live st. RB51 persisted in BALB/C mice up to 28 days. A secondary exposure was cleared in 7-21 days. One or 2 injections of st. RB51 did not induce detectable titers of anti-O-side chain antibodies, although antibody titers to st. RB51 whole cell and cytoplasmic antigens were detected. Mice infected with st. RB51 alone or followed by infection with st. 2308, demonstrated a very strong reaction to a 14-18 Kd antigen which was believed to be the core of the LPS complex. When st. RB51 was administered after injection of st. 2308 the response to the core determinants were inhibited. One vaccination with st. RB51 was able to significantly protect mice against challenge with st. 2308 at one and four weeks post challenge. Two st. RB51 vaccinations were able to protect mice as well as one vaccination at one week post challenge but protection increased by four weeks post challenge.
Strain RB5l was able to survive in cattle a for at least twenty-two days. The organism remained stable, rifampin resistant, and may have induced minor amounts of transient anti-O-side chain antibodies in some cows late in the experiments.

▼ In the last four decades, Saudi Arabia has undergone rapid urban development. One consequence of this is the emergence of the villa-type dwelling unit as a standard contemporary house design. The domestic open space of each unit is the space surrounding the form of the house. This contemporary domestic open space has failed to meet the basic cultural need for privacy and the demands of the local climate. The aim of this study is to describe the need for privacy as a determining cultural aspect, and climatic comfort in the contemporary domestic open space within the existing cultural and environmental context. The study analyzes the traditional domestic open space to provide clues to direct and improve the existing situation. Design options or guidelines based on the analysis of the contemporary and traditional domestic open spaces are proposed to
improve the domestic open space within the villa house pattern.

▼ Computer Aided Design systems intended for three dimensional solid modelling
have traditionally used geometric representations incompatible with established representations
in computer vision. The utilization of object models built using these
systems require a representation conversion before they can be used in automatic
sensing systems. Considerable advantages follow from building a combined CAD
and sensing system based on a common geometric model. For example, a library
of objects can be built up and its models used in vision and touch sensing system
integrated into an automated assembly line to 'discriminate between objects and determine-
orientation and distance. This thesis studies a representation scheme, the
dual spherical representation, useful in geometric modelling and machine recognition.
We prove that the representation uniquely represents genus 0 polyhedra. We
show by,example that our representation is not a strict dual of the vertex connectivity graph, and hence is not necessarily ambiguous. However, we have not been able to prove that the representation is unambiguous. An augmented dual spherical
representation which is unique for general polyhedra is presented. This graph theoretic
approach to polyhedra also results in an elegant method for decomposition of polyhedra into combinatorially convex parts. An algorithm implementation details and experimental results for recognition of polyhedra using a large field tactile
sensor are given. A theorem relating the edges in the dual spherical representation and the edge under perspective projection is proved. Sensor fusion using visual and tactile sensory inputs is proposed to improve recognition rates.

▼ Ravidomycin is a yellow antitumor antibiotic produced by
Streptomyces ravidus. Ravidomycin shows strong antitumor activity
against P388 lymphocytic leukemia, the colon 38 tumor, and the CD8Fl
mammary tumor. It is also very active against Gram positive bacteria.
Biosynthetic studies have shown that the aglycone unit comes from the
folding of a polyketide chain with the vinyl unit arising from propionic
acid. Since this vinyl functionality is believed to playa role in the
antitumor activity of the antibiotic, it is of interest to elucidate the
stereochemical selectivity in its formation from propionic acid. The
synthesis of (R) and (S)-L2- H j propionate, incorporation of the
labelled material, and chemical analysis of the resulting antibiotic was
be used to determine the stereochemistry of formation of the vinyl side
chain. It was found that propionate was incorporated with ravidomycin
with stereospecific loss of the 2-(pro-R)-proton.

▼ The otolith organs are housed in the inner ear and are responsible for sensing accelerations
and gravity. These inertial sensing systems are modeled in this thesis as a three
material system consisting of a rigid otoconial plate attached to the skull by a gel layer, surrounded
by a viscous endolymph fluid. The gel layer is considered to be a viscoelastic solid,
and modeled as a simple Kelvin element. The governing differential equations are derived
and nondimensionalized, yielding three nondimensional parameters: nondimensional density,
R, nondimensional viscosity, M, and nondimensional elasticity, 6. The equations are
solved using uÌ nite difference techniques on a digital computer. By comparing the modelâ s
response with previous biological research, values for the nondimensional parameters are
found. The value of R is 0.75 and the value of 6 is between 0.3 and 0.075. While the value
of M is placed between 5. and 10., results indicate that to properly model the long time
response of the otolith, a single and constant value for viscosity is not feasible.

▼ Many small scale agricultural operations such as greenhouses, peanut drying and tobacco curing,
use significant quantities of thermal energy. Direct combustion of biomass is a potential source of heat energy for those agricultural applications to substitute for the electricity or fossil fuels (principally LP gas) currently used. However, small scale combustion equipment often operates with low efficiency and high emissions.
A prototype chunkwood combustor was installed and tested. The basis for controlling heat output,
was the modulation of air supplied to the primary and secondary combustors. Exhaust gas CO and
CO2 concentrations, combustor efficiency, and useful heat output were measured. The cleannest
burn was achieved during a forty minute test, where 50 percent of stoichiometric air was introduced
at the primary, and 170 percent at the secondary, for a total of 220 percent stoichiometric. The
overall average CO/CO2 ratio for this test was 0.084, and 0.1 is considered to be an average rating for a combustion in a wood stove. Moreover, the efficiency during this test was 52 percent.

▼ The principle of encoding specificity states that
effective information retrieval relies upon consistency of
encoding and retrieval cues. The present study generalized
this principle to a complex social interaction in order to investigate the relation between certain combinations of pre-
and post-observational cues and their effects on information
categorization, recognition accuracy, and judgment accuracy.
It was hypothesized that two experimental factors, appraisal
purpose and rating format categorization, would influence
organization, retrieval, and judgment of performance
information. Specifically, consistent encoding (purpose) and
retrieval (format) cues were expected to result in the most
efficient retrieval of information, and consequently in more
accurate performance ratings.

▼ This study had four purposes. They were to
determine whether accounting tests used during the
1989
Virginia FBLA regional accounting competitive events
were reliable, valid, comprised of test items at
appropriate difficulty levels, and to ascertain if the
curricular drift was present.
Secondaryâ level high school business students,
all of whom were members of Virginia FBLA, participated
in this study. Nine of the 11 Virginia FBLA regions
were represented in this study. Test scores for 152
students were obtained for Accounting I and 81 students
for Accounting II.
The researcher examined the tests for reliability
by applying Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20). Both
the Accounting I and Accounting II tests were found to
have low reliability estimates, .81 and .78
respectively.
Advisors/Committee Members: Stewart, Jeffrey R. (committeechair), Oliver, J. Dale (committee member), Schmidt, B. June (committee member).
