▼ This dissertation examines writings that major Korean intellectuals produced during the Asia-Pacific War, when the Japanese empire embarked upon an aggressive expansion into the Asian continent and eventually entered into war against the United States. As the empire mobilized its colonized populations for the war effort under the banner of imperialization (hwangminhwa/kōminka), the reach of the colonial state penetrated to nearly all aspects of Korean society. As a result, this period has been narrated within postwar nationalist Korean historiography as a particularly traumatic experience. Within this narrative, many of the texts I examine in this dissertation have been explained as the intellectuals' abandonment of their original ideological or philosophical positions of Korean nationalism or anti-imperial socialism to turn "pro-Japanese" (ch'inil/shinnichi, literally "intimate with Japan") in engaging with or supporting the empire's wartime propaganda. But instead of the usual emphasis on the shift or break, I consider the period as a continuation or development of the intellectuals' existing socio-political and cultural concerns, particularly regarding the relationship between the intellectuals and the masses.Although the intellectuals' engagements with the wartime discourses of imperialization, conversion (chŏnhyang/tenkō), and Pan-Asianism - all of which were taken up by the colonial state to mobilize the Korean population - are seen as collaboration with the colonizers, the future that these Korean intellectuals envisioned cannot be adequately explained as "Japanese." Rather, the writers I discuss sought to explore during the late colonial period the possibilities of different alternatives to an older imperialist "universalism," where domination of foreign peoples and lands was justified in the name of spreading universal values. Japan's colonization of Korea under the mission of bringing "civilization and enlightenment" (bunmei kaika) was one most immediate manifestation of the contradiction that such problematic "universalism" brought on in the colony. But the relation between Japan and Korea was not the only problematic site that concerned the Korean intellectuals. They also grappled with issues of increasing social and cultural gap between the urban and the rural, as well as the anxiety that they had merely imitated the West in their pursuit of modernity, at the expense of their own cultural authenticity. In response to these key questions regarding the experience of Korean modernity, Korean intellectuals employed discourses of agrarianism, dialectical materialism, and nativism that had emerged before the wartime period. I examine how the Korean intellectuals continued to explore key elements of these discourses in their discussions of conversion, imperialization, and Pan-Asianism. ▼ Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent chronic disease affecting older people and a major cause of disability and utilization of healthcare resources. Coping and self-management behaviors may have a decisive impact on the physical, psychological, and social outcomes of experience with OA. The purpose of this study was to describe the process and pattern of OA representation, coping, and its impacts among older Koreans in the United States. This study employed an exploratory descriptive design. Data were collected using a semistructured interview method. Participants of the study were 18 older Koreans living in southern California. The findings of the study indicated that representation, coping, and coping appraisal were interconnected concepts in the management of OA. Participants' representation was categorized into symptoms, name, cause and cure of their illness, and concerns for the future. Coping with OA included seeking healthcare providers, using folk remedies, exercising, controlling the mind, praying, comparing to others, accepting destiny, and developing their own healing methods. Participants evaluated the process and outcome of coping and reset their treatment goals. OA affects older Koreans' daily living, financial status, family relationships, social activities, and perceptions of life. Older Koreans were very familiar with OA even before they experienced any initial symptoms. They believed that OA was an incurable, painful illness that caused difficulties in their daily lives and tremendous financial burdens. They were concerned about becoming a burden on their families in the future. They tried most treatments suggested by friends and families and finally adopted or developed their own healing methods. They accepted OA as their destiny, and they were living with it. They were still happy because they were loved and cared for by their family, friends, church, and God. The major significance of the study is its contribution to understanding health behavior among older Koreans in the United States. It is important to provide nursing care in a manner that respects the individuality of each client who has unique life experiences and cultural backgrounds.

▼ This dissertation is a synthesis of social, political, and international histories of decolonization in Korea and Japan. My study demonstrates how the liberation of Korea became a foundational historical event not only for the colonized but also for metropolitan society. Despite the recent emphasis on the need to treat the metropole and colony as one analytical field, scholars have yet to approach decolonization as a mutually constitutive process that restructures both the metropole and the colony. The fields of Area Studies and International History often divide their focus on the regional aftermath of the Japanese empire into separate national units of analysis, resulting in histories split between the U.S. and Soviet occupations of Korea (19451948) and the U.S. (Allied) occupation of Japan (1945-1952). In a radical departure from the more nation-centered scholarship, my work treats post-empire Japan and Korea, U.S. occupation policy in Japan and Korea, and Japanese and South Korean anti-Communist regimes as one analytical field. In order to maintain a focused line of inquiry through the complexity of the decolonizing world, I position the Korean postcolonial population in Japan, or the so-called "Korean minority question," as a primary methodological site in my work. With such an analytical focus, I pose a key set of different questions that turn our attention to the transnational processes of dismantling the Japanese empire. First, how did the problem of repatriating both Korean colonial conscripted workers from Japan and Japanese colonial settlers from Korea molded popular nationalistic sentiments and mutual antagonisms in post-empire Japanese-Korean relations? Second, how did post-1945 everyday encounters between the Japanese and Koreans, the defeated and the liberated, frame the Japanese "embracing" of defeat and colonial independence along with U.S. occupation? And third, how did the politics of Korean diasporic nationalism emerge in Japan from the struggle over self-determination and autonomy from Japanese power and how did it develop into the critical locus of U.S.-Japan-South Korea cold war containment policy? By exploring these issues previously overlooked in the existing historiography, my work offers a new framework that overcomes a dichotomy and separation between histories of post-1945 Japan and Korea. This study focuses on the evolution of diaspora identities among Koreans living in the diverse settings of China, Russia, and Japan. Various theories are used to examine how this diaspora constructs and expresses its ethnic identities such as: ethnic boundaries, memory, the Other, and transnationalism. The Koreans in China (called Chosŏnjok) employed ethnic boundaries to develop their identity while straddling various real and imagined borders (e.g., physical, ideological and cultural). The Koreans in Russia (called Koryŏsaram) used their memories of the homeland and their own historical experiences in order to anchor their communities amid competing currents of cultures and nationalities. The Koreans in Japan (called Zainichi) created their identity by deconstructing their position as the outsider "Other" imposed on them by Japanese society. The Korean diaspora expressed transnationalism in its attitudes and actions, so this study will examine the diaspora groups' interactions with each other and with the Korean homeland in the post-1919 period, the Korean War, and in recent decades in order to assess how transnational contacts help shape their identities. These theories, along with other key ideas such as positionality, voice, and choice reveal that ethnicity is not just a cultural expression, but also a political tool, a crux in power relations, and a symbol of nationalism. A diaspora's ethnic identity is a complex phenomenon involving multiple loyalties, hybrid expressions of culture, and unique historical circumstances. Such a view challenges Korea's primordial understanding of ethnicity and also the South Korean government's political ideology that all Koreans – no matter where they live – are "one people." The diaspora groups' experiences prove that they cannot be boxed into the master narrative of South Korea as overseas Koreans, nor can they be relegated to the footnotes of the national histories of China, Japan, and Russia as ethnic minorities. We must look beyond the imposed categories of belonging and examine how the diaspora's own histories reveal agency, hybridity, modernity, networks, relationships, emotions, and the struggle to define one's place in life. Through the Korean diaspora, this study embarks on a transnational journey across the generations to answer the basic question: "Who am I"?

Dėl šios priežasties dabar Japonijoje egzistuoja sąlyginai didelė, tačiau mažai žinoma korėjiečių tautinė mažuma ne tik Vakaruose, bet ir pačioje Japonijoje. Korėjiečiai Japonijoje vadinama zainichi korėjiečiais arba tiesiog zainichi. Šiame darbe siekiama išanalizuoti korėjiečių tautinės mažumos (zainichi korėjiečių) situaciją ir įvaizdžius Japonijoje.. Pirmoje darbo dalyje apžvelgiami teoriniai tautinių mažumų adaptacijos, integracijos ir asimiliacijos aspektai. Paimamas Lenkijos lietuvių tautinės mažumos atvejis palyginimui su korėjiečių tautinės mažumos situacija Lenkijoje, siekiant geriau suprasti ir priartinti lietuvio ir europiečio sąmonei zainichi korėjiečių padėtį Japonijoje. Tiek lietuviai Lenkijoje, tiek korėjiečiai Japonijoje atsidūrė mažumų padėtyje dėl istorinių aplinkybių. Lenkija vykdo draugiškesnę politiką mažumų atžvilgiu nei Japonija, kuri siekia išlaikyti homogenišką visuomenę asimiliuodama kitataučius. Kai tuo tarpu Lenkija pripažįsta tautinių mažumų egzistavimą. When Korea was occupied by Japan, a lot of Koreans were brought to the country by force or came here voluntarily without having another possibility to find a job and make a living. Due to the reason, in Japan the Korean national minority is quite large, yet, barely known both in the West and inside Japan. Koreans are called Zainichi Koreans or simply Zainichi in Japan. The objective of this work is to analyse the current situation of the Korean national minority, or Zainichi Koreans, and their existing images in Japan. The first part of this paper is aimed at presenting theoretical aspects of the adaptation, integration, and assimilation of national minorities in another country. In order to make the situation of Zainichi Koreans in Japan more comprehensive to the Lithuanian and European perception of such issues, in the same part of the work the case of the Lithuanian national minority in Poland is introduced, so as to make a comparison between it and the situation of the Korean minority in Japan. Both Lithuanians in Poland and Koreans in Japan became minorities in the respective countries because of historical circumstances. Yet, Poland’s policy was friendlier with respect to the way national minorities were treated in Japan, where it was intended to have a homogenous society through the assimilation of the foreign-born. ▼ Immigrants’ health-seeking behaviours are reconstructed during their healthcare adapting process as a consequence of interaction with the host health services. How Korean immigrants, who came from a very different healthcare system, reconstructed their health-seeking behaviours by adapting in New Zealand, and the factors affecting their healthcare decisions and behaviours were the main concerns of the research. Korean immigrants’ experiences were explored and theorised in order to provide a theoretical understanding of their health-seeking behaviours. Glaser’s classic grounded theory was used to generate a conceptual theory with emergent fit. Forty-eight participants were recruited from Wellington and Auckland. The primary data were collected from unstructured face-to-face individual interviews (n=23), seven two-person interviews (n=14 [two people attended twice]), and four group interviews (n=14 [one person attended twice]). In order to develop a theory grounded in the participants’ experiences and perspectives, data were collected, coded and analysed congruently and iteratively with the constant comparison and theoretical sampling methods. The Healthcare Acculturation Theory that emerged from this research elucidated Koreans’ healthcare adapting process and provided insights into their health-seeking behaviours in New Zealand. Koreans’ health-seeking behaviours were largely categorised into four positions: “rejecting”, “attuning”, “attuning but negotiating”, and “rejecting but negotiating”. They were found to be in one of the four positions at any one point in time and each position reflected their responses toward the New Zealand healthcare system. Once a specific position was held, their healthcare decisions and behaviours were directed by the said position. As their healthcare experiences were ongoing, their chosen positions were not end-outcomes in themselves. When their existing perceptions and behaviours were challenged by new experiences their healthcare positions transitioned or reinforced, and these changes informed the Healthcare Acculturation Theory. When Korean immigrants, who came from a commercially driven healthcare system, experienced healthcare (emergency care rather than elective) at the public services in New Zealand they were deeply touched. The healthcare they received was caring, empathetic, and responsive care delivered in a person-centred way that they had never experienced before. This experience rendered a turning point in their healthcare adapting process. Participants who reached such a point experienced transitions, not only in their healthcare positions, but in their life beliefs and values as well, which went far beyond simply a shifting perspective but can be likened more to a “conversion”. It was conversion to a new understanding. This research articulates the major contributing factor to immigrants’ acceptance of healthcare, which was receiving care that Koreans perceived as “altruistic”. ▼ This dissertation uses ethnographic research conducted between 2010 and 2011 as well as original survey data (n=800) to examine how the transnational enclave impacts opportunities for upward mobility and formations of ethnic solidarity among ethnic Koreans in Beijing. Specifically, I challenge how the key principles of the enclave hypothesis differs within the transnational context by examining four empirical field sites: 1) the space of everyday life within the enclave (chapter 5), 2) the ethnic church (chapter 6), 3) the individual experiences of first-generation South Korean and third- and fourth-generation Korean Chinese ethnic entrepreneurs (chapter 7), and 4) the South Korean chaebol (conglomerate) firm in Beijing (chapter 8). To briefly summarize my findings, my project demonstrates that the mechanisms of solidarity and trust touted in former theories on the ethnic enclave are largely absent in the Korean transnational enclave in Beijing. Frequent transnational movement and disparities in class have led to bifurcated social networks, residential segregation, and institutional fragmentation. In the absence of ethnic solidarity, migrants must rely on their ability to move flexibly across a broad range of contexts both inside and outside the enclave to gain access to the necessary resources to sustain their entrepreneurial activities. To this end, Korean Chinese rural migrants, who are able to act as cultural intermediaries between South Korean and Han Chinese societies, are best able to utilize the opportunities available in the transnational enclave, whereas their first-generation South Korean counterparts, despite their high levels of human capital, largely fail due to their inability to form guanxi (loosely translated as social connections) with local Chinese bureaucrats. The enclave, by sequestering the South Koreans within their own community, largely perpetuates their social isolation from Chinese society and their continual dependence on Korean Chinese intermediaries to conduct business. ▼ New Zealand is a country populated by migrants and the Asian population is the largest fastest growing cohort and are predicted to outnumber Māori (i.e. the indigenous people of New Zealand) by 2050. Due to the requirements of immigration to New Zealand the Asian community tends to be highly educated, with Asian ethnicities being more likely to have a university bachelors or post-graduate degree. Asian people are distributed more towards lower household income categories than Europeans, but the proportion of Asian people living in the lowest New Zealand deprivation quintile areas has declined in recent years. Migrants applying for residency are required to have, and thus can be expected to arrive in the country, with good health. The research on health care utilisation in geography has suffered by its tendency to neglect migration and culture as an influencing factor. In New Zealand this neglect is compounded by the near absence of a research focus on Asians and where they do appear it is in collated national surveys that have tended to group all sub-Asian ethnicities as one. This study explored the utilisation of health care from two directions. First, the response and perceptions of health care use from the view of the health services and, second, the perceptions of health care provision from the view of Asian migrants. For these reasons qualitative methods were utilised as they allow a focus on the everyday life situations of subjects.They provide opportunity to expand and flow with the research process. In New Zealand, health services are available that specifically target Asian patients, but they are not uniformly available across New Zealand. This study identifies features of mainstream general practice services, as well as factors that migrants bring with them that act as barriers for Asian people accessing health services, including affordability, language and negative experiences that influence trust of the New Zealand health care system. In many cases affordability was linked to a perceived lack of value for money, where no treatment or tangible outcome was received through a visit to the doctor. Language was indicated to be the most pressing barrier to accessing health care and participants’ home country health experiences continued to influence perceptions and use of health care in New Zealand. The study also highlights some strategies that can be implemented into various stages of the Asian patient’s introduction into and then through the health system and health care to improve the availability and acceptability of these services.

▼ Migration to a new country presents many lifestyle challenges that may influence future health outcomes. In particular, eating patterns may be altered due to the expense or lack of availability of foods typical of the immigrant's usual diet and the relative abundance of unfamiliar, locally produced foods. Studies of migrants carried out in host countries have shown that the change of living environment is associated with changes in food choices, activity patterns and other lifestyle factors. This may then be reflected by changes in health indicators: e.g., body measurements, and consequently morbidity and mortality. The latest census indicates that Koreans are the fastest growing ethnic group and the third largest Asian ethnic group in New Zealand after Chinese and Indians. Nonetheless, to date no studies have examined the nutritional outcomes resulting from the migration of Koreans to New Zealand. Hence, a study is needed to determine the dietary habits and the possible impact of the diet on risk factors for health and disease among Korean migrants. As a pilot study, the purpose of this study was to assess dietary intake and other health related measures in a sample of 50 middle-aged (40-55 years) Korean females who have lived in New Zealand for at least 5 years. The study assessed sociodemographic characteristics, activity level, dietary intake, factors related to the dietary intake and anthropometric and biochemical measurements by questionnaires, 24-hour dietary recall and appropriate body measurements. The body measurements included weight, height, triceps and subscapular skinfolds, waist, hip, and upper arm circumference, elbow breadth, body fat using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, blood pressure and blood glucose level. The nutrient intakes of subjects were found to be generally adequate and the proportions of energy derived from macronutrients (Carbohydrate:Protein:Fat =55:17:26) were also considered to be in the adequate range. However, low intakes of calcium (596mg) and zinc (8mg) and high intake of sodium (3749mg) were identified as the main nutritional problems in this population. The nutrient intakes of Korean immigrants to New Zealand with longer residences (≥8.8 years) did not differ from those with shorter residences (<8.8 years). This suggests that the dietary acculturation of migrant Koreans may have taken place during the early years of residence in New Zealand (<5 years). The findings from this study further indicate that Korean migrants have not changed their traditional dietary habit to any great extent and that rice and kimchi still hold a prominent place in their diet. While the intakes of the study participants were generally similar to reported intakes from Korean and New Zealand national surveys, the intakes of some nutrients were intermediate in the study participants (Korean immigrants) between those of native Koreans and New Zealanders; intakes of calcium in migrant Koreans were lower than those of New Zealand women, but higher than native Koreans because of a significantly greater…

▼ Blood flow mediated by the vascular endothelium plays an important role in removing heat from the skin. Asians who have thrifty genes have impaired endothelial function (EF) due to the westernized high fat (HF) dietary lifestyle. Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) can produce free radicals which reduces the bioavailability of the endothelium derived relaxing factor, nitric oxide (NO). EF, as measured by the blood flow response (BFR) to heat, occlusion and the free radical concentration after a single HF meal has not been studied in Korean-Asians compared to Caucasians. The purpose of this study was to evaluate baseline and postprandial EF as related to oxidative stress from a single HF and low fat (LF) meal and the effects of vitamins on scavenging free radicals and improving EF in Korean-Asians compared to Caucasians. This was done by assessing skin BFR to vascular occlusion and local heat and analyzing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels after ingestion of a HF and LF meal before and after vitamin intake. Ten Caucasians and ten Koreans participated in the study (mean age 25.3 Â± 3.6 years). BFR to vascular occlusion and local heat and oxidative stress was assessed after a single HF and LF meal at 2 hours compared to baseline. After administration of vitamins (1000mg vitamin C, 800IU vitamin E, and 300mg Coenzyme Q-10) for 14 days, the same measurements were repeated. The results of this investigation showed that the skin BFR to vascular occlusion and local heat at baseline was significantly lower in Koreans than Caucasians. The skin BFR to vascular occlusion and local heat following a HF meal significantly decreased and free radicals significantly increased at 2 hours compared to baseline in Koreans (p<.001), but not in Caucasians. Also, the skin BFR to vascular occlusion (p=0.001) and local heat (p=0.003) was significantly lower and free radicals (p=0.004) were significantly higher at 2 hours after the HF meal in Koreans than Caucasians. When vitamins were given, the BFR to vascular occlusion and local heat before and after HF meal was not significantly different in both Koreans and Caucasians. These findings suggest that Koreans may have lower EF than Caucasians which may be explained, in part, by genetic variation. Also, even a single HF meal can reduce EF through an oxidative stress mechanism but can be blocked by antioxidant vitamins in Koreans. In conclusion, Korean-Asians are probably more susceptible to skin damage during heat application due to lower endothelial function compared to Caucasians if Koreans eat high fat foods. However, reduced endothelial function may be prevented by taking antioxidant vitamins. ▼ This study aims to comprehend the contextual backgrounds, communicative behaviors, and cultural consequences of South Korean adolescents who are sent to the United States for the purpose of education. Globalization, the recent economic affluence of Koreans, and a long tradition of `education fever,' has created a new trend of sending young children and adolescents alone to the United States in order to learn English. Three different levels of socio-cultural and historical backgrounds are provided in order to explain this phenomenon: the modern Korean perspective on education, the contemporary world of globalization, and Korean developmentalism. This study is composed of four basic research questions: (1) Why are these young adolescents sent to the United States by their parents?, (2) How do they live in the United States where everything is strange to them?, (3) how do they attempt to use new com techs to cope? (4) How successful are they at coping? and (4) How will their cultural identity be shaped? Based on these questions, this study conducts a series of in-depth interviews with young sojourners in Oklahoma City, Boston, and Dallas. The qualitative study, which is largely guided by grounded theory and phenomenology, divides into two main sections: the first section provides contextual background about their everyday lives in the United States. The second section mainly focuses on their communicative behavior and their use of new communication technologies. Findings of this research show that many of these young sojourners are suffering quite traumatically by living without parents and proper peer relationships. Social media have proven to not be adequate replacements for these young people and their normative social and psychological development. Being completely isolated in the US context, these young people spend much time alone in their private space using the Internet and consuming Korean media content. Cultural consequences in relation to their identity formation reflect the complex nature of the globalized world and the limitations of social media to satisfy the social needs of young people. This study is eventually expected to provide a ground for a refutation of the functionalist tradition of intercultural communication research and to develop new perspectives on internationally relocated populations in the age of globalization and advanced technology. ▼ The purpose of this dissertation is to explore, record, and analyze the traces of colonial and postcolonial conditions through various standpoints of Korean diasporic communities in Japan. My approach is to reveal life course narratives of the first-generation Koreans in Japan. As a third-generation Zainichi Korean whose familial history witnesses, yet has overlooked, the colonial root as an origin of displacement, I employ a self-reflexive stance and an insider's (yet only in a partial form) perspective to history writing. Specifically, in this dissertation, I ask: 1) what would be some shared life course experiences of first generation Koreans in Japan as the population whose lives are conditioned by the colonial displacement, and how are they narrated by them?; and 2) how would the first generation Koreans' stories of their displacement explain their material and sociopolitical circumstances that were uniquely conditioned by the colonial history and diasporic experiences? Chapters approach these research questions in multiple ways - with my autobiographical reflections, with a historical literature review, with a discussion of rhetorical history, narrative as well as postcolonial theories, and with actual stories collected through field work. The stories of the interviewed first generation Zainichi Koreans are divided, yet acknowledging the interconnectedness, into two versions - "Big and Small" based on the intensity and duration of life story interviews. The Big stories, about which I aim to narrate the participants' holistic life history, have revealed the three 'relationshipss' 1) the past relationship between colonial rulers and subjects; 2) the present relationship between postcolonial subjects and the society; and 3) the power relation between popularly acknowledged memory and oppressed ones. The 'Small' stories, which are context-based and conversational narrations of the participants' life experiences, have emotionally spoken to what I call the six ‘then and now' problems. The challenges they have faced in daily lives in Japan have been expressed in such thematic terms as: name, education, work, poverty, illiteracy, and kurou, or hardship. The Big and Small stories, collectively speak to the continuity of the colonial experiences among the first generation Koreans in Japan: Experienced migration to Japan, witnessed the transition from the old Korea to the divided one, and transformed (or resisted doing so) their positionality/s from the “Japanese subjects” to the permanent “foreigners” cum “citizens” in Japan. Through the lenses of rhetorical history perspective, I argue for an importance of a critical perspective on the part of a researcher in the process of text-making in history writing. ▼ Following the collapse of the Japanese Empire (1945) and the devastation of the Korean War (1950-1953), the question of how to represent and imagine “everyday life” or “way of life” (saenghwal, 生活) became a focal point of post-colonial and Cold War contestations. For example, President Syngman Rhee’s administration attempted to control the discourse of “New Life” (shinsaenghwal) by linking the spatio-temporality of the everyday to reconstruction and modernization. “Everyday life” was also a concept of strategic interest to the United States, whose postwar hegemonic ambitions in East Asia meant spreading “the truth” about an idealized vision of American way of life through government agencies such as the United States Information Service (USIS). These ideas and representations were designed to interpellate the South Korean people into a particular kind of regulatory relationship with their bodies and minds, their conduct of their day-to-day lives, their vision of themselves within the nation and the “Free World.” “Everyday life” became, in other words, part-and-parcel of Cold War governmentality’s mechanism of subjectification. Overly privileging these top-down discourses and techniques, however, can foreclose a nuanced understanding of a rich and complex set of negotiations over the meaning of saenghwal underway in both elite intellectual and popular imagination. Through my examination of literature, criticism, reportage, human-interest stories, government bulletins, philosophical essays, photography (artistic, popular, journalistic, archival, exhibition), cartoons, and educational and feature films, I characterize this period broadly in terms of “postwar crisis of modernity.” If “colonial modernity” in Korea had consisted of tensions and collaborations between colonialism, enlightenment, and modernization, then the emergent neocolonial order of the Cold War would give rise to a reconfiguration of this problematic: national division, South Korea’s semi-sovereignty vis-à-vis the U.S. and the denial of decolonization accompanied by the false promise of democratic freedom and American-style prosperity. Negotiations of this crisis can be found across urban and rural space, contesting the representation and dissemination of universalist and developmentalist “everyday life,” which was linked to the postwar restoration of the enlightenment subject. The stakes of these contestations through the framework of saenghwal could be ontological, aesthetic, economic, affective or universalist, and were articulated across popular and intellectual registers. While works of recent English-language scholarship in modern Korean history have productively explored the question of everyday life during the colonial period and in DPRK after liberation, no work thus far has examined the significance of the relationship between intermediality and saenghwal in the cultural field of ROK in the postwar 1950s. ▼ Since the late 1980s, the community of Korean minorities in Northeast China has experienced unprecedented “Korean Wind”: many Korean minority of China made efforts to realize their wealth accumulation and to raise their social status through transnational migration from China to South Korea. In the past thirty years, two generations of Chinese Korean migrants born between 1940 to 1980 have worked in South Korea as labors for the so-called “3D jobs”: the difficult, dirty and dangerous work. Many young Chinese Korean migrant workers left their elderly parents and children at home in Northeast China to seek for jobs and better future in a country that they were both familiar with and estranged at the same time. Based on detailed ethnographic data on the social change and the Left-behind members of a Korean community in rural Northeast China as a result of long-term anthropological field work, this research aims to answer two questions: first, what impacts do the international migration have on home villages in rural China, considering the local socio-economic context and historical background of the Chinese Korean, who used to be a geographically and politically marginalized ethnic group in China since the 19^th century? Second, as a non-aboriginal ethnicity in the Northeast, how did the Chinese Korean practice social and cultural reconstruction through different strategic maneuvering on local rice cultivation before the 1980s, and the international labor market after the 1980s? Thus, this thesis investigates the social and cultural reconstruction of Chinese Korean communities from the following four perspectives: First, the nation-state plays a significant role in constructing a Korean identity as an official Chinese minority and they have been mobilized into nationalism from their immigration into Northeast China in large scale in 1910, to the contemporary global networks in Northeast Asia after the 1980s; Second, the Left-behind elderlies in rural China who face the crisis of loneliness, health problems, and the threat of death, are constantly negotiating with and struggling for their ethnic and national identities. Thus, they intend to search for a sense of belonging by the means of space imagination; Third, the middle-aged working parents who are undergoing international migration between China and South Korea, are also trying to maintain their family relations by networking, traveling, and remittance transferring. Their family tie therefore revolve around the older generation; Fourth, since the early 1990s farmlands of the Chinese Koreans have been contracted to local Han peasants from their home villages, inevitably the cultural capital and monopolistic rice-cultivating techniques of the local Koreans have been transferred to the local Han neighbors in large scale. ▼ Described by scholars as the relocation of diasporic descendants to an ancestral homeland from which they have resided away for most if not all of their formative lives, ethnic return migration has increasingly served as the foundation for the scholarly expansion of research on diaspora, transnationalism, nationhood, and ethnicity. I situate this dissertation within this growing body of literature by focusing on the life histories and migratory narratives of US-raised Korean ethnic return migrants (or ‘returnees’). The ethnic return migration of US-raised Koreans serves as a compelling case study for a few reasons. For one, US-raised Koreans represent a substantial portion of the returnee population in South Korea, trailing only Korean Chinese (or joseonjeok) in sheer numbers. What differentiates the ethnic return migration of US-raised Koreans from other diasporic Koreans, however, is that they relocate largely as highly educated, middle-class professionals, thus arriving in South Korea with relatively elevated levels of human capital and socioeconomic privilege. Furthermore, their decisions to relocate to an unfamiliar ancestral homeland stand at odds with social scientific research documenting the economic and cultural assimilation of later-generation Asian Americans. Drawing on data collected from ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth qualitative interviews with Korean American ‘returnees’ living in South Korea, this dissertation addresses the following questions: 1) what factors contribute to the ethnic return migration of diasporic descendants, especially among US-raised Koreans? And 2) given the weak ties that ethnic return migrants typically have with their ancestral homelands, how do these ‘returnees’ fare in their new environments? In examining these larger questions, each chapter of this dissertation endeavors to explain how the practice of ethnic return migration is intricately connected to and influenced by social factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, identity, globalization, and Empire. Taken as a whole, this project provides a nuanced and intersectional take on the practice of ethnic return migration—illustrating how a seemingly personal practice is deeply informed by and informant of larger social forces that span across multiple geographic and temporal contexts.
