The present work has objective to define wich is the distribution of probability that analysis of nutritional contents are adjusted, selecting a function that better explain its behavior and to estimate the limits values of nutrients contents for it classification on several vegetables tissues. It were used 176 datas et colected from 15,534 nutritional analysis of three forest species, Acacia mearnsii, Eucalyptus sp. and Pinus sp., determinated for 1999 to 2004 period, in Forest Ecological Laboratory, in UFSM. The analysis were separated by subgroups in macro and micronutrients, vegetables components (leaves, bark, wood, root), species and year of determination. The database determination trough it statistical describe with mean, standart-deveation, number of observations, maximum and dataset adjusts a Normal distribution, it was aplicated the Lilliofors Test. Where the dataset didnt adjust the Normal, it was tested the functions Log-normal, Beta, Gamma and Weibull through Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, with 5%. It was possible determinated that 70% of all dataset valued adjusts one of functions, being the Normal presented of 33.5% of settlings, the Log-normal 27.3%, the Gamma 3.4%, the Weibull 5.7% and the Beta function didnt presented no one settling. Of all amount dataset valued, 30.1% didnt adjust any one functions. The studied functions, exception Beta, can explain the results from chemical analysis of vegetables tissues and establis hed the control limits of nutrient contents in each species.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo definir qual é a distribuição de probabilidade que os resultados de análises nutricionais se ajustam, selecionando uma função que melhor explica o comportamento dos teores e estimar os valores limites dos macro e micronutrientes para sua classificação nos diversos tecidos vegetais. Foram utilizados 176 conjuntos de dados coletados em 15.534 análises nutricionais de três espécies florestais, Acacia mearnsii, Eucalyptus sp. e Pinus sp., realizadas durante o período de 1999 a 2004 e determinadas no Laboratório de Ecologia florestal, da UFSM. As análises foram separadas em subgrupos por macro e micronutrientes, componente vegetal (folhas, galhos, casca, madeira, raiz, etc.), espécie e ano de determinação. O banco de dados passou pela determinação das estatísticas descritivas média, desvio padrão, número de observações, valores máximo e mínimo. Para verificar se os dados seguiam a distribuição Normal, foi aplicado o teste de Lilliofors. Nos casos onde o teste não foi normal, foram testadas as funções Log-normal, Beta, Gamma e Weibull, via teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov, com alfa 5%. Foi possível determinar que 70% do total avaliado seguiam alguma das funções, sendo que a Normal apresentou 33,5% de ajustes, a Log-normal 27,3%, a Gamma 3,4%, a Weibull 5,7% e a função Beta não apresentou nenhum ajuste. ▼ Abstract: Despite the fire being part of the dynamics and evolution of the Brazilian Savanna (Cerrado), indiscriminate forest fires are a problem for Conservation Units longevity. The Serra da Canastra National Park (SCNP) is located in southwest of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and it has the fire as one of the main conflicting activity. This research had as general aim to create a methodology for the generation of a potential danger model for fire propagation, which will be applied in the SCNP. For that, a spatial-temporal mapping of the forest fire in the park between 1984 and 2015 was performed from the visual interpretation of Landsat TM, ETM + and OLI images, and the recurrence index of these events was calculated. For the modeling of danger, geo-environmental variables associated with fire propagation were mapped: hypsometry, slope, aspect, wind surface effect, surface convexity index, vegetation index, drainage density and roads density. The spatial dependence among the areas of high fire recurrence and these geo-environmental variables was evaluated by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, with weights associated with the variables, and the modeling was generated using Fuzzy probabilistic maps. The results showed that the critical areas of fire recurrence, which most part are located in Chapadão da Babilônia (not regularized zone) are the areas with high potential danger of fire propagation. However, the fires are less recurrent in the Chapadão da Canastra due to the regularization, even when it presents a high potential danger of fire propagation. The danger of propagation is lower in the buffer zone, as well as their fire recurrence. A análise de séries temporais trata do estudo de dados colectados durante determinado período de tempo. Uma série temporal consiste numa série de dados listados por ordem temporal, e é constituído por uma sequência de dados medida sucessivamente em intervalos de tempo equidistantes, ou não. O estudo de séries temporais é um campo vasto da estatística que se ramifica a várias áreas da ciência. A análise de séries temporais consiste em métodos de análise de dados com o objectivo de extrair elementos estatísticos e outras características relevantes e ocorre frequentemente no contexto da estatística, econometria, geofísica, meteorologia e outras áreas onde uma das principais motivações para o estudo destas séries temporais é a previsão. Uma grande parte dos sistemas complexos encontrados na vida real têm associados séries temporais empíricas que exibem graus variáveis de não-estacionariedade, como por exemplo medições da velocidade do vento, séries temporais financeiras, entre outros. Um processo estocástico estacionário tem como propriedade que a estrutura da média, variância e autocorrelação não se altera no tempo. Um dos focos desta área de estudo é o tratamento de séries temporais não-estacionárias através de algoritmos de segmentação. A segmentação de séries temporais consiste em dividir a série em fragmentos, baseando a decisão de segmentação num critério pré-determinado no algoritmo. Neste trabalho explora-se um algoritmo de segmentação automática recursiva não-paramétrica baseado no teste estatístico de Kolmogorov-Smirnov para séries temporais não-estacionárias provenientes de processos complexos. A segmentação permite dividir a série temporal em fragmentos onde a estatística é idêntica, criando assim janelas de estacionariedade dentro de uma série não-estacionária. O teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov é um teste totalmente não-paramétrico que avalia a igualdade de distribuições de probabilidade contínuas que pode ser utilizado para comparar uma amostra de dados com uma distribuição de probabilidade de referência, Teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov para uma amostra, ou pode ser utilizado para comparar duas amostras de dados e neste caso designa-se por Teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov para duas amostras. Este teste possibilita-nos testar se duas amostras pertencem a uma mesma distribuição sem necessidade de especificar qual, isto resulta da análise da diferença entre duas funções de distribuição cumulativas e observar em que ponto esta diferença absoluta é máxima. Esta diferença designa-se por distância de Kolmogorov-Smirnov. Neste trabalho utiliza-se o conceito de teste de hipóteses que consiste numa categoria de inferência estatística fazendo parte de teoria da decisão. Um teste de hipóteses inicia com a proposta de uma hipótese nula, em como um modelo probabilístico descreve as observações de determinada experiência. A floristic study was carried out in 4 forest fragments subjected to different treatments. Two fragments were subjected to a management plan (one of them for 14 years and the other for 9 years), the third one was clear cut and burnt 22 years ago, and the last fragment (control) for which there is no record of strong intervention. The objectives of this study were: to study the floristic composition in order to know the diversity; to determine the floristic similarity among the four fragments; to evaluate the structural behavior of the species in each fragment; to characterize the successional stages in relation to the species richness and diametric classes; to infer about the adherence of diametric distributions before and after the exploration of 2 forest fragments using the test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov. The studied areas correspond to 4 forest fragments located in the cities of Piranga and Diogo de Vasconcelos in the State of Minas Gerais. It was applied the systematic sampling, with the first plot set in an initial point of the forest and from there transects were established throughout each fragment. The number and distance of transects, and the distance between sampling plots varied with the form and size of each fragment. The inventoried individuals were those with a circumference at breast height (CBH) ≥ 15.70 cm, being also recorded the total height. In the fragments, 12,709 individuals were found, distributed in 397 species, 190 genus and 67 families. The Shannonâs diversity index varied from 3.91 (fragment 3) to 4.71 (fragment 4). Considering the floristic similarity, the method of Sorensen weas more rigorous than Jaccard, in discriminating sites. The four fragments are highly similar among them with index values above 44%. The basal area of the fragments varied from 12.71 to 28.45 m2.ha-1, with the highest value found in fragment 4. The density varied from 2,603 to 3,844 individuals, with the highest density found in fragment 3. The number of species varied from 160 (fragment 1) to 260 (fragment 4), with the latter showing the highest floristic diversity among all. The species with the the highest importance value index (IVI) were different for each fragment. Around 12% of the species were present in the four fragments. The early secondary species stood out before the others in all fragments, however shade-tolerant species are in good development. The diametric structure of the 4 fragments showed negative exponential form. According to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (5%) there was no correlation between distribution, before and after the exploration in the fragment 1, while in the fragment 2 the distribution before and after the exploration showed a positive correlation.

Que ce soit à des fins spéculatives ou pour financer des conflits armés, une grande opacité entoure les filières des concentrés de matières premières minérales dont la demande ne cesse d'augmenter. Compte-tenu de l'éloignement entre les sites primaires d'extraction et les sites de production de produits finis, il est difficile d'identifier l'origine de ces produits. Dans un souci de traçabilité des concentrés, l'établissement d'une carte d'identité du minerai permettrait le contrôle des échanges dans l'industrie minérale. Le problème peut être posé en termes d'inversion: remonter au minerai d'origine en étudiant le produit vendu. Deux stades doivent être distingués: 1) la caractérisation du minerai brut et 2) la « perte de mémoire » des caractéristiques du tout-venant au cours du traitement minéralurgique. Les paramètres retenus sont la composition minéralogique, l'identification de microfaciès caractéristiques des minéraux cibles, la pseudo-succession paragénétique, le contenu et la distribution en éléments mineurs de minéraux cibles. Les minéraux cibles retenus sont la pyrite pour son ubiquité, la sphalérite car elle est susceptible d'incorporer une grande variété d'éléments mineurs, éventuellement valorisants ainsi que la chalcopyrite car elle est souvent liée aux deux autres minéraux. La comparaison de la composition chimique des phases minérales est effectuée en calculant la distance de Kolmogorov-Smirnov et de Colin-White. Des tests ont été réalisés sur les gîtes de type amas sulfuré volcanogène. Ils ont montré que les caractéristiques retenues permettaient de distinguer les pyrites, les sphalérites et les chalcopyrites de deux gisements de la province Sud-Ibérique (IPB), de sept gisements de la province d’Oural et du fumeur noir actuel de Rainbow. Les cartes d’identité obtenues permettent de discriminer les différents sites (IPB, Oural et Rainbow) et les gisements d’une même province. Les paramètres minéralogiques et microtexturaux ont également été suivis au cours du traitement minéralurgique de la mine de Neves Corvo. Pour une chaîne de traitement donnée, le paramètre « perte de mémoire » est une estimation de l'erreur commise lors de l'inversion, mais aussi une façon de caractériser une succession d'opérations minéralurgiques.

The demand in mineral resources is increasing rapidly, but there is a lack of transparency in the trade of concentrated raw mineral materials because of speculation and involvement in the financing of armed conflicts. Because of the distance between the primary extraction and the final production sites it is difficult to check the origin of such products. An identity card is required for minerals which would permit trading in the mineral industry to be verified and ensure traceability of concentrates. This problem may be considered as an inversion process: studying the products sold to identify the original ore. ▼ A lei de Newcomb-Benford, também conhecida como a lei do dígito mais significativo, foi descrita pela primeira vez por Simon Newcomb, sendo apenas embasada estatisticamente após 57 anos pelo físico Frank Benford. Essa lei rege grandezas naturalmente aleatórias e tem sido utilizada por várias áreas como forma de selecionar e validar diversos tipos de dados. Em nosso trabalho tivemos como primeiro objetivo propor o uso de um método substituto ao qui-quadrado, sendo este atualmente o método comumente utilizado pela literatura para verificação da conformidade da Lei de Newcomb-Benford. Fizemos isso pois em uma massa de dados com uma grande quantidade de amostras o método qui-quadrado tende a sofrer de um problema estatístico conhecido por excesso de poder, gerando assim resultados do tipo falso negativo na estatística. Dessa forma propomos a substituição do método qui-quadrado pelo método de Kolmogorov-Smirnov baseado na Função de Distribuição Empírica para análise da conformidade global, pois esse método é mais robusto não sofrendo do excesso de poder e também é mais fiel à definição formal da Lei de Benford, já que o mesmo trabalha considerando as mantissas ao invés de apenas considerar dígitos isolados. Também propomos investigar um intervalo de confiança para o Kolmogorov-Smirnov baseando-nos em um qui-quadrado que não sofre de excesso de poder por se utilizar o Bootstraping. Em dois artigos publicados recentemente, dados de exoplanetas foram analisados e algumas grandezas foram declaradas como conformes à Lei de Benford. Com base nisso eles sugerem que o conhecimento dessa conformidade possa ser usado para uma análise na lista de objetos candidatos, o que poderá ajudar no futuro na identificação de novos exoplanetas nesta lista. Sendo assim, um outro objetivo de nosso trabalho foi explorar diversos bancos e catálogos de dados astronômicos em busca de grandezas, cuja a conformidade à lei do dígito significativo ainda não seja conhecida a fim de propor aplicações práticas para a área das ciências astronômicas. ▼ This thesis is concerned with constructing proper confidence regions when traditional construction fails to provide proper coverages – confidence regions for functional parameters, covered in Chapter 2, and those of the regression coefficients on highly persistent autoregressive (AR) processes, covered in Chapter 4. In Chapter 2, following a brief introduction of functional data analysis (FDA) in Chapter 1, we develop a systematic approach to construct, understand, and visualize confidence regions for functional parameters. We provide a general strategy for constructing confidence regions in a real separable Hilbert space using hyper-ellipsoids and hyper-rectangles. We then propose specific implementations that work especially well in practice. They provide powerful hypothesis tests and useful visualization tools without relying on simulation. Next, we demonstrate the negative result that nearly all regions, including our own, have zero-coverage when working with empirical covariances. To overcome this challenge, we propose a new paradigm for evaluating confidence regions by showing that the distance between an estimated region and the desired region (with proper coverage) tends to zero faster than the regions shrink to a point, and call this phenomenon ghosting. We illustrate these methods in a simulation study and an application to diffusion tensor image of fractional anisotropy. In Chapter 3, we use hypothesis tests developed in Chapter 2 to enhance distribution goodness-of-fit tests based on the empirical cumulative distribution function, ECDF. Other than simply using ECDF as the random function whose functional is to be used as the test statistic, we propose other transformations of a random sample on Rⁿ into a function on L²[0,1]. This approach leads to a multitude of distribution goodness-of-fit tests with combinations of different functionals from Chapter 2. Many of them beat commonly used ECDF-based tests like Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS), Cram\'er-von Mises (CVM), and Anderson-Darling (AD) in many scenarios. We especially propose a few of them since they provide sufficient power in most of the scenarios while AD test – which is considered to be the best ECDF based test – does fail in some. In Chapter 4, we consider the confidence regions for the regression coefficients when the explanatory variable is a near unit-root AR process. We take test-inversion approach, i.e., inverse the hypothesis tests, to find a proper confidence region for such regression coefficients. While proper confidence intervals for the AR coefficient itself have been available through test-inversion approach, those for regression coefficients on the AR process have not. We propose methods to construct proper joint and marginal confidence regions for the regression coefficients and the AR coefficient using test-inversion approach and Tukey's halfspace depth. Their coverages are validated through a simulation study and the application to financial market data mitigates evidence of market predictability, if any. ▼ The Birnbaum-Saunders (BS) distribution is a positively skewed distribution and is a popular model for analyzing lifetime data. In this thesis, we first develop an improved method of estimation for the BS distribution and the corresponding inference. Compared to the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) and the modified moment estimators (MMEs), the proposed method results in estimators with smaller bias, but having the same mean squared errors (MSEs) as these two estimators. Next, the existence and uniqueness of the MLEs of the parameters of BS distribution are discussed based on Type-I, Type-II and hybrid censored samples. In the case of five-parameter bivariate Birnbaum-Saunders (BVBS) distribution, we use the distributional relationship between the bivariate normal and BVBS distributions to propose a simple and efficient method of estimation based on Type-II censored samples. Regression analysis is commonly used in the analysis of life-test data when some covariates are involved. For this reason, we consider the regression problem based on BS and BVBS distributions and develop the associated inferential methods. One may generalize the BS distribution by using Laplace kernel in place of the normal kernel, referred to as the Laplace BS (LBS) distribution, and it is one of the generalized Birnbaum-Saunders (GBS) distributions. Since the LBS distribution has a close relationship with the Laplace distribution, it becomes necessary to first carry out a detailed study of inference for the Laplace distribution before studying the LBS distribution. Several inferential results have been developed in the literature for the Laplace distribution based on complete samples. However, research on Type-II censored samples is somewhat scarce and in fact there is no work on Type-I censoring. For this reason, we first start with MLEs of the location and scale parameters of Laplace distribution based on Type-II and Type-I censored samples. In the case of Type-II censoring, we derive the exact joint and marginal moment generating functions (MGF) of the MLEs. Then, using these expressions, we derive the exact conditional marginal and joint density functions of the MLEs and utilize them to develop exact confidence intervals (CIs) for some life parameters of interest. In the case of Type-I censoring, we first derive explicit expressions for the MLEs of the parameters, and then derive the exact conditional joint and marginal MGFs and use them to derive the exact conditional marginal and joint density functions of the MLEs. These densities are used in turn to develop marginal and joint CIs for some quantities of interest. Finally, we consider the LBS distribution and formally show the different kinds of shapes of the probability density function (PDF) and the hazard function. We then derive the MLEs of the parameters and prove that they always exist and are unique. Next, we propose the MMEs, which can be used as initial values in the numerical computation of the MLEs. ▼ Nowadays, traffic classification constitutes one of the most important resources in the task of managing computer networks. The tools and techniques that enable network traffic to be segregated into classes are critical for administrators to maintain their networks operating at the required Quality of Service (QoS) and security levels. Nonetheless, the steady evolution of the infrastructure and mainly of the terminal devices, as well as the consequent increase of the complexity of the networks, make this task a lot harder to achieve, both in terms of accuracy and computational requirements. Some of the factors that most prejudice traffic classification are the adoption of encryption and evasive techniques, employed by network applications. Several researchers have thus been focusing efforts in finding new means to classify traffic or improve the existing ones. This dissertation discusses a research work on the network traffic classification subject, focused on the segregation of network flows according to the application that generated them, independently of the fact that such applications use different communication paradigms. For achieving that purpose, a network scenario similar to a real one was setup on a lab environment, and several traffic traces generated using different contemporary applications were collected. This traces were initially subject to human analysis, which enabled the identification of behavior patterns without resorting to information inside the contents of the packets, using only the empirical distribution of the size of the packets. After the initial analysis, a set of signatures composed by the aforementioned empirical distributions and the name of respective applications was build, for each one of the applications and type of traffic under analysis. Subsequently, the best means to obtain the correspondence between the signatures and the network traffic in real-time and in a packet-by-packet manner was investigated, from which resulted the modification of two statistical tests known as Chi- Squared and Kolmogorov-Smirnov, later implemented in prototypes for traffic classification. To enable the packet-by-packet analysis, the two statistics of the aforementioned tests are calculated for a sliding window of values, which iterates each time a new packet of the flow arrives. The number of operations involved in the actualization of the statistics is constant and low, which enables obtaining a classification at any given moment of the duration of a flow. Each one of the two classification methods was implemented in a different prototype and then combined, using an heuristic, to obtain a third classifier. The classifiers were tested and evaluated separately resorting to new traffic traces, generated by the different applications considered in the study, captured in a network aggregation point. ▼ This dissertation comprises an analysis of wind frequency and magnitude data and resulting sand transport for Cape Cod, Massachusetts; wind speed and wave height data for coastal Louisiana; and habitat classification and elevation data for a retrogradational barrier island in coastal Louisiana. Chapter 2 presents an analysis of wind data for Cape Cod, Massachusetts in which annual, seasonal, niño, and storm-related wind patterns were investigated to analyze the potential for aeolian sand transport in a blowout dune located on Cape Cod. Results indicate that wind patterns, drift potential, and drift direction are seasonal. Sand drift potential varies at specific locations within the blowout dune based on the mean grain size for each morphological feature (i.e., deflation basin, depositional lobe, etc.). Winds above the threshold for sediment velocity occur during every season and topographic alteration and acceleration of winds can drive sand movement in a direction that is distinctly different from blowout orientation. Chapter 3 discusses several techniques (Gumbel and Beta-P probability distributions; Southern Regional Climate Center and Huff-Angel regression methods) used to derive quantile estimates (return period and event magnitude) for extreme wind speed and wave height events resulting from tropical, frontal, and airmass thunderstorm weather events in coastal Louisiana. Results indicate that the Huff Angel regression method provides the best fit distribution for the majority of wind speed and wave height data sets analyzed. The methods described here to derive wind speed and wave height quantile estimates should be considered when determining the impact of wind and wave processes on restoration projects in coastal Louisiana. Chapter 4 provides a classification of the habitats on Whiskey Island, a retrogradational barrier island along the Louisiana coast, as well as a comparison of habitat change over time and the elevation at which vegetated habitats occur. Specific attention is paid to the emergent and woody vegetation present on the back barrier marsh of the island. The analyses indicate that without continued restoration and maintenance of the island, the effects of sea level rise, subsidence, storms, and other physical processes may render the island incapable of supporting the vegetation that currently colonizes the island.

▼ Hierarchical models constitute one of the most useful classes of statistical models with applications in a broad range of disciplines including, among others, social sciences, epidemiology and environmental sciences. The widely used linear mixed effects models, their extension to generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs), and state-space models all arise as special cases of general hierarchical models. These models provide a powerful framework for modeling the effects of latent processes, called random effects, whose variability is only manifested through the observed data. However, maximum likelihood estimation for these models poses significant challenges because the likelihood function involves intractable integrals whose dimension depends on the random effects structure. In this thesis, we use data cloning; a simple computational method that exploits advances in Bayesian computation, in particular the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, to obtain maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters along with their asymptotic standard errors in general hierarchical models. We also suggest a frequentist method to obtain prediction intervals for random effects. Determining estimability of the parameters in a hierarchical model is a very difficult problem in general. This thesis also develops a simple data cloning based graphical test to not only check if the full set of parameters is estimable but also, and more importantly, if a specified function of the parameters is estimable. We exemplify our methodology by analyzing various GLMMs and state-space models. Using a focal population time series of song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) on Mandarte Island, British Columbia, Canada, we show that data cloning can be efficiently employed to fit nonlinear non-Gaussian state-space models for conducting population viability analyses in the presence of observation error and missing values. The quality of MCMC based Bayesian inference, and for that matter, that of data cloning based estimates, is crucially dependent on appropriate diagnosis of MCMC chains’ convergence. This thesis also develops a diagnostic method for convergence of MCMC algorithms using a new empirical characteristic function (ECF) based nonparametric test for comparing k-multivariate distributions. We show that the ECF based convergence diagnostic is particularly useful in cases where the target distribution is multimodal.
