▼ Wetlands face threats from global change, even as protections have been institutionalized to conserve the amenities they provide. These institutional protections frequently rely on a wetland classification system to guide conservation. In the Cook Inlet Basin of Alaska, USA (CIB), for example, best wetland assessment practices require the use of a classification system to ensure the conservation of the most valuable amenities. However, the systems used widely in the USA outside of Alaska, where peatlands are not common, inadequately describe the diversity of peatlands on the glaciated landscape of the CIB. Here I present a new Cook Inlet Classification system (CIC) organized around the hydrogeologic settings of wetlands in the CIB. The variables most strongly correlated with ecological differences within major geomorphic classes were used to construct a system supported by ample field data. The CIC produced greater within-class similarity than other widely-used systems, likely due to the overriding importance of the seasonal variability of water levels in CIB peatlands. The CIC has been mapped over an area of 7600 km2 and has guided wetland functional assessments in the CIB, and may be adaptable to any region supporting peatlands on glacial landforms. The harmful effects of a warming climate on aquatic resources may be partially ameliorated by discharge of shallow groundwater from peatlands to streams. This potential benefit of peatlands was investigated in the CIB using end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) and a sensitivity analysis of a water budget to quantify the contribution from extensive peatlands formed over glacial lake deposits to stream flow during the dry-season. Although peatlands in this hydrogeologic setting are common globally, the discharge from them is challenging to quantify. A spatially distributed sampling protocol at a single point-in-time produced a reliable EMMA showing that over half of stream flow on a day during the summer dry period originated near the surface of peatlands. This finding is being used to establish the value of peatlands for buffering increases in stream temperature, which have exceeded tolerances of commercially important fishes in the CIB. The analysis also suggests that differences in hydrogeologic setting influence shallow groundwater hydrology in peatlands.

▼ Floods are the most common type of natural disaster in the world and one of the most damaging. Changes in climate conditions such as precipitation and temperature are causing changes in stream flow. This means that in order to better understand flooding and possibly develop a system for making flood predictions, stream flow needs to be analyzed more closely. The primary objective of this thesis is to analyze the Big Sioux River just south of Brookings, South Dakota, both annually and seasonally. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has stream gauges placed in rivers and streams all over the United States. One of those gauges was installed in 1953 and is located in the Big Sioux River just south of Brookings, South Dakota and is the gauge that will be used for this study. The daily stream flow from October, 1953, to September, 2018, was selected as the time period of study. The stream flow data was grouped into yearly stream flow then classified as very wet, wet, average, dry and very dry for each year. Then the steam flow data was broken into four seasons for each year; fall, winter, spring and summer. The climate classification fit a log normal distribution with twenty-four years classified as average, sixteen classified as wet, seventeen classified as dry and the very wet and very dry classifications each having four years. The seasonal analysis showed that the spring months had the highest stream flow and the fall had the lowest stream flow. The streamflow analysis results were then compared to multiple other research projects, but the main comparison was to a study performed by Sadichya Amatya. That project focused on the development of climate scenarios based on precipitation analysis for five different locations in eastern South Dakota, including Brookings South Dakota. In comparing results, it was found that similar climate classifications were made between the two studies. However, in Amatya’s study she classified eight-year periods of precipitation rather than each individual year. This proved to be less useful than analyzing each individual year for flood prediction purposes but did allow an analysis of how a wet or very wet 8-year cycle is related to high streamflows. In order to continue the process of making flood predictions, more research is suggested in the area of an analysis of precipitation data for the area, snow melt and runoff analysis, ground water analysis, stream height analysis and other stream studies. ▼ A classifier making predictions in noisy environments with limited data will inevitably make some mistakes. However, some types of error are more harmful than others. For example, the cost of misidentifying an explosive as a benign electronic device is far greater than the cost of misidentifying a laptop as an explosive. In such cases it is of paramount significance that the relative cost of different types of errors is taken into account when constructing and assessing algorithms for making predictions under uncertainty. This thesis will develop a distribution dependent theory of learning with asymmetric costs. For a comprehensive coverage we consider four different learning scenarios: (1) Supervised learning with a fixed cost matrix, (2) Weakly supervised cost-sensitive learning with unknown costs, (3) Sequential cost-sensitive learning with bandit feedback and (4) Neyman Pearson classification for qualitatively asymmetric costs. In each of these scenarios we seek to identify the key properties of the data distribution which influence the difficulty of the learning problem. These include the distribution's dimensionality, smoothness and the level of noise. We shall pay particular attention to minimax rates which give the minimum risk attainable by a classification algorithm, uniformly, over a given family of distributions. We begin our analysis with a supervised setting in which the costs of the possible prediction errors are given by a known cost matrix. In this setting we give a natural generalisation of Tysbakov's margin condition which quantifies the level of noise in the data in relation to the optimal decision boundaries for the cost matrix. We then identify the minimax rates with an exponent which depends solely upon the dimensionality of the distribution, the smoothness of the regression function and the level of noise. Significantly, these rates hold for all compact sub-manifolds and for any reasonable cost matrix. We then show that the minimax rates are actually attained by a simple cost-sensitive k-nearest neighbour method. Departing from the fully supervised setting we turn to a class of weakly supervised cost-sensitive learning problems with stochastic and feature dependent costs. We show that the minimax rates have the same exponent as their supervised counter parts and once again, these rates are attainable by simple k-nearest neighbour methods. We then move to an online scenario in which the learner sequentially makes a prediction and then incurs the cost of their prediction, without ever observing either the true class label or the costs that would have been incurred if an alternative prediction had been made. This problem is equivalent to the problem of multi-armed bandits with covariates. We present the conceptually simple k-NN UCB algorithm for this problem, which combines the k-NN method from supervised learning with the UCB algorithm for multi-armed bandits. L’effet des polysaccharides sur l’interaction HGF-MET est étudié à l’aide d’un plan d’expérience comportant plusieurs puces à protéines sous différentes conditions d’expérimentation. Le but de l’analyse est la sélection des meilleurs polysaccharides inhibiteurs de l’interaction HGF-MET. D’un point de vue statistique c’est un problème de classification. Le traitement informatique et statistique des biopuces obtenues nécessite la mise en place de la plateforme PASE avec des plug-ins d’analyse statistique pour ce type de données. La principale caractéristique statistique de ces données est le caractère de répétition : l’expérience est répétée sur 5 puces et les polysaccharides, au sein d’une même puce, sont répliqués 3 fois. On n’est donc plus dans le cas classique des données indépendantes globalement, mais de celui d’une indépendance seulement au niveau intersujets et intrasujet. Nous proposons les modèles mixtes pour la normalisation des données et la représentation des sujets par la fonction de répartition empirique. L’utilisation de la statistique de Kolmogorov-Smirnov apparaît naturelle dans ce contexte et nous étudions son comportement dans les algorithmes de classification de type nuées dynamique et hiérarchique. Le choix du nombre de classes ainsi que du nombre de répétitions nécessaires pour une classification robuste sont traités en détail. L’efficacité de cette méthodologie est mesurée sur des simulations et appliquée aux données HGF-MET. Les résultats obtenus ont aidé au choix des meilleurs polysaccharides dans les essais effectués par les biologistes et les chimistes de l’Institut de Biologie de Lille. Certains de ces résultats ont aussi conforté l’intuition des ces chercheurs. Les scripts R implémentant cette méthodologie sont intégrés à la plateforme PASE. L’utilisation de l’analyse des données fonctionnelles sur ce type de données fait partie des perspectives immédiates de ce travail.

The effect of polysaccharides on HGF-MET interaction was studied using an experimental design with several microarrays under different experimental conditions. The purpose of the analysis is the selection of the best polysaccharides, inhibitors of HGF-MET interaction. From a statistical point of view this is a classification problem. Statistical and computer processing of the obtained microarrays requires the implementation of the PASE platform with statistical analysis plug-ins for this type of data. The main feature of these statistical data is the repeated measurements: the experiment was repeated on 5 microarrays and all studied polysaccharides are replicated 3 times on each microarray. We are no longer in the classical case of globally independent data, we only have independence at inter-subjects and intra-subject levels. We propose mixed models for data normalization and representation of subjects by the empirical cumulative distribution function. The use of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic appears natural in this context and we study its behavior in the classification algorithms like hierarchical classification…

▼ The several million years preceding the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary has been the focus of many studies. Changes in ocean circulation and sea level, extinctions, and major volcanic events have all been documented for this interval. Important research questions these changes raise include the climate dynamics during the warm, but not hot, time after the decay of the Late Cretaceous greenhouse interval and the stability of ecosystems prior to the mass extinctions at the end-Cretaceous. I document several biotic perturbations as well as changes in ocean circulation during the Maastrichtian stage of the latest Cretaceous that question whether the biosphere was being preconditioned for the end-Cretaceous extinction. The first event at Shatsky Rise in the tropical North Pacific was the brief acme of inoceramid clams at ~71 Ma, followed by their abrupt extinction during the “mid-Maastrichtian event” at 70.1 Ma. The second is an intriguing dissolution event that began ~67.8 Ma at Ocean Drilling Program Site 1209 (2387 m). The dissolution event is marked by very poor planktic foraminiferal preservation and sharply reduced calcareous plankton diversity. The shift into the dissolution interval was initially gradual, then rapid. Within the late Maastrichtian dissolution interval, the planktic/benthic (P/B) ratio is low, planktic foraminifera are highly fragmented, larger taxa are mostly absent, small taxa are relatively abundant, and planktic foraminifera and nannofossil species richness are low. The event is followed by an abrupt recovery in carbonate preservation ~300 kyr prior to the K/Pg boundary. Was the dissolution event caused by a change in deep water circulation, migration of the site out of the high productivity tropical belt, or ocean acidification associated with Deccan Traps volcanism? Our data show that changing deep water masses, coupled with reduced productivity and associated decrease in pelagic carbonate flux was responsible for the dissolution interval, while Deccan Traps volcanism may have caused surface ocean acidification ~200-kyr prior to the K/Pg mass extinction event. In this study, we tried to make the agroclimatic zoning of jatropha (Jathopra curcas L.) in Pernambuco. For this, we used climate data of mean air temperature and rainfall of 146 stations, being 73 with historical data series over 30 years and other 73 with series less than 30 years,however, more than 20 years of observations. The choice of jatropha was motivated by its potential as a renewable energy source to replace fossil fuels, as well as for its hardiness, being a new option for semi-arid climate regions, as takes place in much of the Northeast region. The choice of the study area is related to climate variability shown by this state and the potential that this culture has to develop in regions where there is little rain. It was also characterized the climate type of Pernambuco State through moisture index (mi) of Thornthwaite, generated from variables of Climatic Water Balance of Thornthwaite and Mather (1955). The results showed that Pernambuco has at least seven different climate types, from arid to humid. Localities were classified according to the climatic requirements of the culture into suitble, constrained by water stress and unfit. According to this study, Pernambuco state showed 14.92% of suitable areas for cultivation of jatropha, 44.26% of constrained areas by water stress and 40.82% of unsuitable areas.

No presente trabalho procurou-se realizar o zoneamento agroclimático do pinhãomanso (Jathopra curcas L.) em Pernambuco. Para isso, foram utilizados dados climáticos de temperatura do ar média e precipitação pluviométrica de 146 postos, sendo 73 com série histórica de dados acima de 30 anos e outros 73 com série abaixo de 30 anos, porém, maior que 20 anos de observações. A escolha do pinhãomanso foi motivada pelo potencial desta cultura como fonte de energia renovável em substituição aos combustíveis fósseis, bem como pela sua rusticidade, sendo uma nova opção para regiões de clima semi-árido, como ocorre em grande parte da região Nordeste. A escolha da região de estudo está relacionada à variabilidade climática apresentada por esse Estado e ao potencial que a referida cultura tem em se desenvolver em regiões onde há pouca chuva. Caracterizou-se também o clima do Estado através do índice de umidade (Iu) de Thornthwaite gerado a partir das variáveis do Balanço Hídrico Climatológico de Thornthwaite e Mather (1955). Os resultados demonstraram que Pernambuco apresenta, pelo menos, sete tipos de clima, desde árido ao úmido. Quanto ao zoneamento, as localidades foram classificadas de acordo com as exigências climáticas da cultura em aptas, restrita por deficiência hídrica e inaptas. De acordo com o estudo, o Estado de Pernambuco apresentou 14,92 % de áreas aptas ao cultivo do pinhão-manso, 44,26 % de áreas restritas por deficiência hídrica e 40,82 % de áreas inaptas.

▼ This thesis evaluates the option of modifying cirrus clouds in order to counteract part of the anthropogenic global warming, also known as cirrus seeding. The feasibility of cirrus seeding is assessed with the general circulation model ECHAM6-HAM with coupled aerosol-cloud interactions. The warming effect of cirrus clouds on climate led part of the research community to the idea of artificially decreasing their frequency and optical thickness by seeding them with ice nucleating particles. Cirrus seeding re- lies on the competition between two distinct cirrus formation pathways: homogeneous nucleation of soluble aerosols and heterogeneous ice crystal nucleation with the help of solid ice nucleating particles. Seeding attempts to transform optically thicker, longer lived homogeneously nucleated cirrus clouds to thinner and shorter lived heteroge- neously nucleated cirrus clouds. The cirrus seeding effectiveness depends on the correct representation of cirrus clouds in climate models. We evaluated the ECHAM6-HAM model against CALIPSO satellite data and found that the model reproduces the cirrus cloud occurrence fraction and ice water content well, but overestimates their extinction. Most importantly, we found that a large fraction of cirrus clouds formed in environments with liquid water, which cannot be modified by cirrus seeding. Moreover, modelled in situ cirrus formed by heterogenous ice nucleation on dust aerosols in most of the world, limiting the cir- rus geoengineering potential. Meanwhile, homogeneous cirrus were dominant only in the tropical tropopause layer and over mountain regions. Seeding cirrus clouds with ice nucleating particles of radii below 10 μm did not lead to a significant cooling effect on climate, due to radiative warming effects of increasing cir- rus cloud cover and decreasing ice crystal radius, which neutralized the cooling gained by the ice crystal number decrease. However, when seeding with larger ice nucleating particles, cirrus cloud cover, ice crystal number concentration, and ice water content decreased, due to increased ice crystal sedimentation velocity, leading to a cooling of up to 0.7◦ C globally. In addition, an idealized cirrus geoengineering setup with in- creased ice crystal sedimentation velocities at temperatures colder than -35◦ C could fully counteract the temperature increase by 1.5 x CO2 concentrations. Furthermore, seeding with ice nucleating particles larger than 10 μm could counteract up to 55% of the temperature and precipitation damage caused by a 1.5 x CO2 increase, without causing negative side effects in any of the analysed regions. Thus, cirrus geoengi- neering was found to be, not considering its problematic engineering details and large modelling uncertainties, an attractive method to counteract part of the anthropogenic warming. Organizacijska klima ni nikjer povsem enaka, razlikuje se od organizacije do organizacije in ravno zato je pomembno, da organizacije težijo k vzpostavljanju ugodne organizacijske klime, kar je osnova za dobro in učinkovito delovanje organizacije. Zelo pomembno je, kakšno vzdušje prevladuje v sami organizaciji, saj ravno to najbolj vpliva na medsebojne odnose med zaposlenimi ter na njihovo učinkovitost in produktivnost pri opravljanju dela. Ravno iz tega vidika bi morale organizacije in vodje nameniti posebno pozornost organizacijski klimi in njenemu vplivu na samo organizacijo in zaposlene. Na zadovoljstvo zaposlenih vplivajo različni dejavniki organizacijske klime, med drugim medsebojni odnosi, ki prevladujejo med zaposlenimi, vodenje, organizacija, zadovoljstvo z delovnim mestom ter ostali dejavniki organizacijske klime. V uvodu magistrske naloge smo opredelili področje, problem, namen, cilje in raziskovalne hipoteze, ki smo si jih zastavili. Na koncu pa smo navedli tudi predpostavke raziskave in omejitve, s katerimi smo se srečevali pri pisanju magistrske naloge. Magistrska naloga je sestavljena iz dveh delov. V teoretičnem delu smo predstavili pojem organizacijske klime in njene sorodne pojme ter povezave med njimi, funkcije organizacijske klime, vrste klim, načine merjenja organizacijske klime in dejavnike organizacijske klime ter jih podrobneje opisali. V raziskovalnem delu smo prikazali organizacijsko klimo na primeru Mestne občine Murska Sobota (MOMS), pri čemer smo podatke pridobili s pomočjo anketnega vprašalnika. Po analizi vrnjenih anketnih vprašalnikov smo pridobljene podatke statistično obdelali ter podatke prikazali v obliki grafov in tabel ter jih opisali. Na koncu smo podali tudi svoje predloge za izboljšave ter ukrepe, s katerimi bi po našem mnenju organizacija lahko še izboljšala svojo obstoječo organizacijsko klimo.

therefore, it is important that organizations strive for building a positive organizational climate, which is a basis for good and efficient functioning of the organization. Les développements continus en micro-spectroscopie vibrationnelle IR et en analyse numérique de données multidimensionnelles ont permis récemment l'émergence de l'histologie spectrale. A l'échelle tissulaire et sur une base biomoléculaire, cette nouvelle approche représente un outil prometteur pour une meilleure analyse et caractérisation de différents états physiopathologiques, et potentiellement une aide au diagnostic clinique. Dans ce travail, en utilisant un modèle tissulaire de côlon normal chez la Souris et chez l’Homme, nous avons apporté des améliorations à la chaîne de traitements des données afin d'automatiser et d'optimiser cette histologie spectrale.En effet, dans un premier temps, le développement d’une double application hiérarchique d'indices de validité a permis de déterminer le nombre optimal de classes nécessaire à une caractérisation complète des structures histologiques. Dans un second temps, cette méthode a été généralisée à l'échelle interindividuelle par couplage d'un prétraitement par EMSC (Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction) et d'une classification non-supervisée k-Means; ce couplage étant appliqué conjointement à toutes les images spectrales IR. Enfin, compte tenu de l'essor des métaheuristiques et de leur capacité à résoudre des problèmes complexes d'optimisation numérique, nous avons transposé un algorithme mémétique aux données spectrales IR. Ce nouvel algorithme se compose d'un algorithme génétique et d'un raffinement par classification non-supervisée k-Means. Comparé aux méthodes classiques de clustering, cet algorithme mémétique appliqué aux images spectrales IR, a permis de réaliser une classification non-supervisée optimale et indépendante de l'initialisation.

Recent developments in IR vibrational microspectroscopy and numerical multidimensional analysis have led to the emergence of spectral histology. At the tissue level, this new approach represents an attractive tool for a better analysis and characterization of pathophysiological states and for diagnostic challenges. Here, using normal murine and human colon tissues, data processing steps have been improved for automating and optimizing this spectral histology. First, the development of a hierarchical double application of validity indices permitted to determine the optimal number of clusters that correctly identified the different colon histological components. Second, this method has been improved to perform spectral histology at the inter-individual level. For this, EMSC (Extended Multiplicative Signal Correction) preprocessing has been successfully combined to k-Means clustering. Finally, given the ability of metaheuristics to solve complex optimization problems, a memetic algorithm has been developed for IR spectral data clustering. This algorithm is composed of a genetic algorithm and a k-Means clustering refinement. Compared with conventional clustering methods, our memetic algorithm allowed to generate an optimal and initialization-independent clustering.
