Movement requires the coordination of multiple muscles. How this is done during fatigue and pain is not well understood, particularly in multijoint tasks. This thesis investigated muscle coordination and the adaptations to local fatigue or pain during pedaling. Fatigue and pain was induced unilaterally on the quadriceps, which made it possible to determine the adaptations at these perturbed muscles, as well as between synergists, and muscles within the same leg and between legs. The thesis demonstrated that during submaximal pedaling, the unilateral pre-fatigue results in a predominant redistribution of muscle activity towards unaffected muscles at the contralateral leg. Another study performed in the same pre-fatigue condition but at maximal intensity, provided evidence that muscle coordination changes to decrease activation of ipsilateral synergist muscles allowing to maintain an effective force orientation at the pedal. Interestingly, we also observed an increase in activation of other muscles which participated to improve the total force produced during the flexion phase of both legs. Finally, another study that induced unilateral local pain, supported pain adaptation theories suggesting that when there is a clear opportunity to compensate, adaptations to pain occur to decrease load within the painful tissue. Overall this thesis demonstrated that…

▼ The first essay examines the effects of influential power each partner can exercise in the industry toward the unexpected dissolution of JVs formed between competitors. Based on the transaction-cost economics for the decision of ‘termination-or-sustenance’ of inter-firm collaboration and the situational assumption of ‘mixed-motive interaction’ that partners face for continuing cooperative behavior with competitor through JV, I theoretically argue that it is the influential power each partners exercise within the industry that causes JVs between direct competitors to have differential risk of dissolution. Event-history analysis was used to test the hypothesis based on the sample of 188 JVs between 2001 and 2015. A key finding is that JV failure is negatively related with the influential power. The second essay further sophisticates prior finding in that it provides the condition under which positive effect of alliance experience to future activities becomes weaker or even disappear. Whereas early researches on experience emphasized that alliance experience generally seems to be conducive to firms’ alliance activities, this study seeks to go further by providing a boundary condition regarding when alliance experience supports alliances activities and when its effect becomes weaker or even disappear. Focusing on 203 firms whose focal joint-ventures were formed between 2001 and 2010 and observing their immediate subsequent joint-venture activities for following 5 years, the study demonstrates that although alliance experience generally influences positively to the likelihood of firms’ re-entrance of joint-venture, its positive effect to the formation rate of new JV becomes insignificant especially when focal firms have a JV failure in the most recent one.

▼ Joint venture (JV) success greatly depends on governance mechanisms such as contracts, equity shares and boards of directors. Unlike some other types of alliances, JVs are always governed by detailed legal contracts that describe how the relationships are to be structured and governed. Using a unique database of 626 JV contracts, this dissertation expands our knowledge on JV governance through three interrelated empirical studies.
The first study examines JV contracts and the institutional determinants of their complexity by drawing on institutional theory and transaction cost economics (TCE). Results indicate that contractual complexity is greater for international JVs than for domestic JVs. In addition, contractual complexity is also related to institutional variables based on the country in which the contract is enforced. For example, complexity is higher in countries with a civil law system in comparison to common law, in countries with inefficient court systems, and in countries where corruption levels are low.
The second study addresses another crucial governance mechanism in JVs: The board of directors. A board is often used to help partner firms monitor and manage the JV, align the interests of the partners and address possible conflicts (Contractor & Reuer, 2014; Cuypers, Ertug, Reuer, & Bensaou, 2017). However, little is known about what determines whether a JV board is actually established. By analyzing the contracts and by drawing on TCE and agency theories, results show that JV boards serve as complements to JV contracts rather than substitutes. Boards are also more likely to be created for JVs which have multiple safeguards, for JVs that perform research and development, and for international JVs and JVs hosted in countries with lower quality of intellectual property rights protection.
The last study explores the relationship between equity shareholding and board participation, two important JV governance mechanisms that are presumed to be correlated. Results confirm that this correlation is strong (0.58) but not extremely high. Drawing on TCE and resource dependency theories, this chapter examines why certain joint ventures present a deviation between the percentages of board representation share versus the equity shareholding of each partner. Results indicate that board representation in international JVs tends to have a greater deviation, while JVs with deadlock clauses, large boards, and JVs hosted in stable countries deviate less.

▼ As part of their global growth strategy, multinational corporations headquartered in developed markets (DMs) are increasingly entering emerging markets (EMs) such as India and China by forming international marketing
joint ventures (hereinafter referred to as “
joint ventures”) with firms headquartered in EMs. However, about one half of these
joint ventures are dissolved or terminated after four years of their formation. This dissertation, comprising of two essays, focuses on the determinants and consequences of dissolution of
joint ventures formed between developed and emerging market firms. In essay 1, building on resource-advantage (R-A) theory and real options view, and using a uniquely compiled multisource dataset on dissolved and continuing
joint ventures in India during the time period 2001 to 2012, I investigate the determinants of
joint venture dissolutions in EMs. I find that majority control by the DM firm increases the likelihood of dissolution. However, majority control by the DM firm in a
joint venture with broader scope decreases the likelihood of dissolution. Moreover,
joint ventures that have higher investments, and that are formed when the EM has higher economic growth have reduced likelihood of dissolution.
In essay 2, I examine the impact of
joint venture dissolution announcements on shareholder value of the EM firms. Guided by the real options approach, the analysis of a uniquely compiled multisource dataset on
joint venture dissolutions in India during 2001 to 2015 shows that dissolution announcements create positive shareholder value for the EM firm. I also find positive value for the EM firm when the partner firms have equal control of the
joint venture prior to dissolution. Furthermore, I find that EM firms experience negative value when they decide to acquire the
joint venture after dissolution, but this relationship is positively moderated by the
joint venture’s pre-dissolution financial performance and EM firm’s alliance experience.

Despite the French Constitutional Council intents, its roles are not airtight. The highest constitutional authority can be seized based on various articles of the Constitution which determine which jurisdiction is in fact solicited. The Constitutional Council has no leeway since it can’t evade the subject of the referral. Multiple functions can be grouped in a role. In fact, four roles can be identified: the role of constitutional Judge which consists of protecting the constitutional text; the role of electoral Judge responsible for ruling on claims related to national elections; the role of Judge of distribution of normative powers determining whether jurisdiction falls within the legislator or the regulatory power; and the role of adviser of the public authorities.Originally designed to tackle parliamentary hegemony, the role of Judge of the distribution of the normative powers was the main purpose of the French Constitutional council. However, the Judge of constitutionality has voluntarily weakened this role in order for the High Authority to no longer be assimilated as an auxiliary of the Government. In addition, the role of constitutional Judge interfered with the decisions of the electoral Judge. The latter can now perform a posteriori control of the constitutionality of a law. Similarly, the opinions issued by the advisor-Judge can also contain constitutional…

▼ As social beings, humans are continually required to act in combination with others. This
joint action can only be successful if we are able to predict and integrate our predictions about the co-actors actions into our own action representation. These abilities are combined in a shared representation of the task, considering a
joint task as one task, as opposed to two individual tasks for each actor. Research in
joint action has focussed on the social Simon task, and numerous social manipulations have been carried out through this task. The shared-Stroop task is a fairly novel task designed to determine if linguistic tasks can be shared in the same way as spatial tasks can, through the generation of shared mental representations of the task. The current study draws upon the notion of social manipulation from the social Simon studies, and intergroup relationships as a focus based upon its significance in social psychological literature. It is expected that intergroup pairs will demonstrate less interference in the shared-Stroop task compared to intra-group pairs, and there will be greater interference when both partners responds to a (different) colour (
joint response) compared to when only one partner responds to a colour (single response). The results did not support either expectation, however further analysis of participant ratings of group affiliation and group closeness found a significant difference in interference between the levels of group affiliation indicated by the participants, F(2,33)=3.928, p<0.05, r=0.48. This result indicate that physical pairings are less important to participants in terms of their reaction times on the shared-Stroop task, their perceptions of group affiliation and between group closeness are more influential on shared representations, and therefore reaction times. Furthermore a number of trends are noted, despite being non significant when tested. A number of limitations, and potential fixes for future research are discussed, along with some possible explanations for the lack of findings.

▼ Converging evidence has shown that in situations of
joint action, co-actors form predictive representations of one another’s upcoming actions and hold these in the same format as their representations of their own future actions. Recently, it has been suggested that a similar process occurs with utterances in cases of
joint language production (i.e. conversation). The current study investigates this proposition using a
joint consecutive picture-naming task to ascertain whether people form representations of their partners’ utterances. Further, as findings suggest that
joint action co-representations can be modulated by social factors, the present study examines whether the same is true with utterance co-representations by testing pairs of close friends against pairs of strangers. The two primary hypotheses were: (a) subjects would make the least amount of errors and produce the fastest responses when their partner was silent, and (b) performance among pairs of friends would be better as compared with pairs of strangers. Marginal results were found in support of the first hypothesis, such that speakers produced almost significantly faster responses when their partner was silent than when their partner was also directed to produce a response. With regards to the second hypothesis, there was a nonsignificant trend towards friends making more errors than strangers. Findings lend support to the theory that interlocutors produce predictive utterance co-representations for one another. These co-representations might also be affected by social variables. However, further replication and elaboration is required before any concrete conclusions can be drawn.

▼ Dialogue is negotiated with remarkable ease when the complex processes involved are considered. Examples include the constant switching of task between the production and comprehension of language and also the coordination of conversational turn-taking. It is thought that the fluidity and coordination of these processes are enabled by an ability to align individual representations of language to form a
joint account of dialogue which allows us to represent the utterances of others in the same way as our own. For this reason dialogue is considered the linguistic form of
joint action. Also, it has been suggested that dialogue makes use of the same underlying processes present in monologue, such as the delayed onset of initiating a passive sentence in comparison to an active one.
In order to demonstrate this, a task of sentence completion between two participants was used. In the
Joint condition, one member of the pair initiated the description of a simple picture and the other member completed it. In the No condition the second partner had no role. A delay of utterance onset was expected by participants when their partner had a role in the sentence due to this
joint account of language. Sentence voice was manipulated by the use of pictures which resulted in both passive and active sentence. To investigate the effect of familiarity of speakers on level of conversational success, results were compared between pairs of strangers and pairs of flatmates.
It was seen that the presence of the role of a partner is taken into account and affects self-generated utterances in the form of delayed utterance initiation. Manipulation of sentence voice and level of conversation experience was not significant.

▼ At many sites across New Zealand, industrial demands and the built environment have taken precedence over considerations for neighbouring natural settings, with a lack of threshold or transitional space between the two often leading to heavy contextual clashes. This is a prominent issue where the Korokoro Recreation Reserve meets the numerous industrial sites at Cornish Street in Lower Hutt, Wellington.
The aim of this research is to address these fragile contextual issues with an architectural intervention that acts like a
joint on multiple theoretical levels, furthering our understanding of how architecture can contribute to the landscape, establishing a narrative between two conflicting conditions while establishing a transitional threshold between them.
Marco Frascari and Kenneth Frampton write on the theory of synecdoche in architecture and the capacity of details as generators, evidencing the skilful joining and consideration of parts, defined as ‘a process of signification’ resulting in synecdochal architecture, in which a part is made to represent the whole and vice versa. When architecture evidences synecdoche, a sensitive viewer can understand an architectural intervention’s underlying meaning and understand architecture as a set of dialogues. Through these means of enabling a greater understanding of architecture, the humble
joint provides a didactic role, and through this didactic capability people may come to see and understand the important role that architecture can play in the context of its natural environment.

▼ The aim of this study was to investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings following autologous blood injection (ABI) for habitual temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation. MRI was performed one hour and four and twelve weeks after ABI, revealing three types of significant findings. The first type was similar to hematoma and/or joint effusion in the articular capsule of the TMJ (type I). The second showed sporadic and diffuse T2 emphasis around the TMJ capsule (type II). The third involved a decreased range of condyle movement compared to before ABI (type III). Furthermore, we analyzed the three types of significant MRI findings. At one hour after ABI, type I was Grade 0 in 0 of 14 patients, Grade 1 in 8, Grade 2 in 2, and Grade 3 in 4. Type II was seen in 9 of the 14 cases and type III in 8. After twelve weeks, all cases of type I were Grade 0, no type II cases were evident, and type III was seen in 11 cases. Injecting autologous blood into surrounding TMJ tissues is an important factor in ABI. Minimally invasive treatment for habitual TMJ dislocation using ABI around the TMJ capsule appears to represent a very effective and safe treatment.

▼ Elbow joint laxity is a problem that normally comes with age; it increases up to critical levels due to rupture or damage to the ligaments of the elbow and affects the stability and capacities of the joint, interfering even with daily activities. This work investigates the kinematics of the elbow through in-vivo experimental measurement. To this end, a platform based on Stewart Platform mechanism was built and used at the bioengineering labs of Brunel University in West London, the UK, to measure the six degrees of freedom of the joint. This thesis aims to develop a method to simulate such motion which could be used for elbow implant design and manufacture. This work contributes to both the basic science of joint movement measurement and to the clinical applications of diagnosing elbow illness. In addition this research presents the preliminary results for a design for elbow implants. Tracking system developed in house was used to measure the degrees of freedom in healthy elbow motion. A pilot study was performed to assess the joint motion and its repeatability. A group of volunteers with normal elbow movement was used to carry out this study. A Stewart Platform mechanism based on the tracking system was used in this study as a non-invasive tool to capture elbow joint motion and track the trajectory and pattern of the motion in three-dimensional space. This thesis aimed to develop a method to simulate the elbow joint motion that could potentially be used for the elbow implants design and there manufacture. The goal of this study was achieved by in vivo measurement of the elbow movement. It was found that the results vary from person to person, but a healthy pattern of motion can be distinguished from an abnormal pattern. To ensure the result, the motion of the right and left hand of each person was compared, allowing the behaviour of the elbow motion to be judged and the results can help surgeons to analyze the motion of the elbow joint and follow up suspicions of abnormal behaviour in the joint or trace any possible joint laxity. Furthermore, the errors involved with the mechanism were calculated and appropriate factors were applied to correct them. As part of this study the manufacturing of medical implants was reviewed and discussed.

▼ This study critically assesses the appropriateness of the governance system used to control all aspects of oil exploration and production within the Nigeria São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Development Zone (NSTP-JDZ). The motivation for carrying out the research emerged from a review of the literature on oil and gas joint venture operations which straddle more than one country’s borders. In the case of the NSTP-JDZ, several reports had criticised its governance practices but had failed to provide a rigorous analysis to substantiate their claims. The study therefore contributes to the literature relating to the governance of oil and gas joint development zones. A mixed method approach was used in the empirical research and the results were analysed against a globally acknowledged good governance theoretical framework. The results confirmed that there are major flaws in the NSTP-JDZ governance system, although there are also positive aspects of the practices. Four areas of concern were identified: Firstly, inadequate personnel skills were impairing management of the zone to such an extent that it could not be guaranteed that resources will be safeguarded for the benefits of future generation. Secondly, control of resources was severely impaired by an uncertainty about who had the authority to implement actions and, of more concern, by political and other conflicting interventions in the management decisions of the NSTP-JDA. Thirdly, the findings indicated the need for improvement in the audit procedures and communication culture between local communities and NSTP-JDZ operators. Lastly, there was a body of opinion that employment practices within the zone were unfair. In addition to identifying the above deficiencies in the governance system, the study has identified and analysed differences in views on governance issues between key stakeholders in the zone. These differences are important as they may well pinpoint why the governance system is deficient and, more importantly, reveal how the governance system can be improved. The vested interests of stakeholders are known to shape stakeholder views and, when there are stakeholders from different countries representing their nation’s interests, these differences can be acute; the findings may be extrapolated to other joint development zones although the various characteristics of the parties involved in each zone will affect the degree to which it is applicable. Finally, the study may have significant economic consequences for both Nigeria and the São Tomé and Príncipe - bearing in mind the importance of oil resources to both countries.

▼ The horse racing industry in New Zealand is a major part of the economy. The primary reason for the elimination of horses is lameness originating from the musculoskeletal system. In the race horses the primary injury is chondylar fracture associated with palmar osteochondral disease (POD).
Hypothesis; When the load is ditributed equally on a surface, the pressure was the same on every location.
Results; The highest pressure found inside the metacarpalphalangeal
joint was when the
joint angle was smallest. With an increasedload applied to the limbs, the pressure inside the MCP
joint shifted more dorsally. The pressure lateral and medial of the sagittal ridge increased linieary with the load. In every testing the load was applied on the limbs in the same manner.
Conclusion; Because the pressure builds op on certain points in the
joint, just a small surface of the
joint has too endure al the pressure in the galloping horse. Most of the lesions are seen on the dorsal side of the
joint surface of the metacarpal bone and on both sides of the sagittal ridge, which complies with results of this research.

do not disappear. This suggests that the shape of the articular
surfaces of the hip
joint is affected by the hip
joint pathologies.
To investigate this, anatomical angles of the hip
joint were
measured, finite element models were constructed, and a sphericity
analysis of the femoral head and acetabulum surface was performed
on thirty hip joints, 10 with cam-type impingement, 10 with DDH and
10 normal hips. Radiographic parameters were taken from CT scan
data, finite element models were used to obtain hip
joint contact
areas and contact pressures from a one-leg-standing loading
condition, and, regarding sphericity, acetabulum and femoral head
surface sphericity was assessed using quantitative and
visualization methods. It was found that the femoral head was more
spherical than the acetabulum in all subjects. However, the
sphericity percentage of the acetabulum and femoral head from the
DDH and FAI group was lower than the normal hip
joint group.
Furthermore, DDH and FAI group had similar values on the sphericity
of the acetabulum and femoral head. We believe that the abnormal
morphology of the pelvic bone and femur found in DDH and FAI
subjects affects the shape of the hips, and this leads to damage on
the articular surface or acetabular rim.

▼ In this thesis, I shall explore the possibility of offering a non-reductive theory of group minds and
joint action in performances of IGM. What makes my account distinct from many currently on offer is that I suggest group minds exist as both conceptually and ontologically distinct entities. I follow this particular route of exploration primarily to uncover a rich set of possibilities for theoretical advancements over existing theories of
joint action. To be more specific, in exploring the psychological and conceptual grounding of group minds, I shall argue that in the context of IGM, group minds are conceptually and ontologically irreducible to individual minds. I develop this argument in light of Raimo Tuomela’s account of
joint action. Since Tuomela's work has seen a number of revisions over the past several decades, my focus is on his 2007 book The Philosophy of Sociality: The Shared Point of View. While there is no intrinsic reason why one must choose Tuomela as the conceptual lens for an analysis of IGM, I have decided to do so, in part, because his work hasn't been given a full treatment in the context of
joint artistic actions. Moreover, I find that several core conceptual elements in Tuomela's account offer a particularly enlightening way for approaching IGM and, furthermore, provide a strong base for defending an ontologically realist approach to group minds. In addition, Tuomela's account shall be juxtaposed with Bratman's work to explore why conceptual and ontological irreducibility is necessary for describing IGM.

▼ The interdependency of action and perception has illustrated how shared representations between co-actors facilitate successful
joint activity. Recent studies in action based experiments have explored the extent to which shared representations are formed in cooperative and competitive social contexts. We explore whether these social contexts also have a different effect on shared representations in a more integrated form of
joint action, that of dialogue. Participants were recruited in same sex groups of 4 and were randomly assigned to 2 teams of 2: Team A and Team B. They consecutively carried out a shared Stroop task in two differing social conditions, once cooperatively and once competitively. For the cooperative condition, each team of 2 were required to work together to collaboratively beat the response times of the other team. For the competitive condition, a member from each opposing team carried out the shared Stroop task together in competition to try and beat each other’s response times. The order of these conditions was alternated between different groups of 4. In this way the results revealed that between the social contexts there was a significant difference of congruency effect, but only when the cooperative context preceded the competitive context and not when the conditions were carried out in the opposite sequence. Furthermore, participants responded slower to stimuli in the first part of the experiment compared to the second part, irrelevant of contextual manipulation. Limitations of the study are discussed in explanation of these results. Implications suggest that when the social context elicits conflicting goals with alignment, shared representations occur to a lesser extent, even in this more integrated form of
joint action, dialogue. To understand the underlying mechanisms in
joint action, future research needs to take into account the social context in which
joint action is embedded.

▼ Sealed sawcut joints are an essential feature of jointed concrete pavement construction and performance as they not only accommodate movements associated with concrete slabs but also prevent entry of moisture and incompressibles into the
joint. Quality adhesion between sealant and concrete is critical for optimum performance of sealed joints. If present in significant amounts, contaminants like dirt and moisture on
joint surfaces at the time of sealant installation adversely influence the sealant-concrete adhesion leading to premature failures. Presently, there are little or no definitive criteria for maximum tolerable contamination levels, which won’t affect the durability of the adhesive bond between sealant and concrete. There is a need of critical construction items for engineers to specify and for inspectors to determine if a sawcut
joint is sufficiently clean for sealant installation in order to reduce the frequency of debonding failures.
This research study aims at developing reliable surface assessments through the use of image analysis for different dirt levels on
joint walls. Images of sawn concrete surfaces were analyzed through Image J software, which is able to capture changes in surface texture due to dirt accumulation in terms of surface height and area parameters. While dirt was quantified through imaging, moisture contamination was quantified with microwave technology. These indirect measurements of surface contamination were verified with tensile bond strength testing. Adhesion between sealant and concrete was studied at different contamination levels of dirt and moisture at different ages of concrete. Fresh concrete sealing and resealing cases were investigated separately, due to different boundary conditions for fresh sealant in both cases. Implications of this study involve the relation of these indirect measurement parameters with bond strength and specification criteria to govern the quality of sealant installation under field conditions.

▼ Statistics of met-ocean conditions including wind, current and wave at the location between west and central Gulf of Mexico (GOM) are derived based on about three year of field measurements. Two-parameter Weibull distribution has been employed to fit wind speed at 10m over sea level and current speed in various depth. The
joint probability contour was derived based on First-Order Reliability Method. In addition, the
joint distribution of wind speed and direction was visualized by wind-rose diagram. The results provided in this study may provide essential information to the probability distribution of met-ocean condition in the particular location and can be used as a reference in the future designs.

▼ Professional Doctorate - Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
This study examines how top management team (TMT) diversity affects the firm performance and is structured in form of two self-contained papers. The first paper has a scholarly focus and extends the upper echelons literature by investigating the effects of both TMT and board of directors (BOD) diversity on Sino-foreign joint ventures (JVs), conditional on state ownership. Based on data from 137 JVs listed in China, the first paper offers empirical support for the suggestion that the international experience diversity of the BOD is positively related to firm performance, with state ownership strengthening the effect. While the nationality diversity of the BOD and TMT, and the international experience diversity of the TMT do not seem to affect firm performance. Consequently, a fine-grained examination of firm performance not only requires separate analyses of the TMT and BOD effects, but also consideration of the ownership constellation within the institutional contexts prevailing in emerging economies. Based on the findings produced in the first paper, the second paper provides managerial implications about how the JV top level team structure may enhance firm performance. Especially, the second paper suggests that non-Chinese investors should focus more on establishing boards with diverse international experience but not be too concerned about the members’ national backgrounds when partnering with state-owned enterprises in China; whereas the composition of the TMT may be of less a consideration to enhance performance of a new JV. In doing so, the second paper elaborates detailed managerial guidelines.

▼ Humans have a unique opposable thumb that maintains a
fine balance between mobility and stability to allow motions that
span from precision handling to power grasping. Much of the
versatility of the thumb is due to the saddle geometry of first
carpometacarpal (CMC)
joint. Located at the base of the thumb, the
CMC
joint is the most common site of reconstructive surgery in the
upper extremity. Nearly 40% of postmenopausal women are affected by
CMC osteoarthritis (OA)—a progressive degenerative disease of
articular cartilage, bone, and synovium that results in decreased
dexterity and partial impairment of the upper extremity. Although
current treatment options can alleviate pain, they cannot restore
the lost strength and mobility, or halt disease progression,
because the pathophysiology of the disease is poorly understood.
While both biological and mechanical factors are implicated in the
etiology of CMC OA, the synergistic mechanism of disease evolution
remains unclear, partially due to a paucity of published data on
CMC
joint biomechanics in healthy and diseased populations.
Accordingly, the objective of this work was to study CMC
joint
biomechanics using in vivo image-based techniques, and to determine
if there are any differences with sex, age, or OA onset that could
point to the etiology of the disease. 155 subjects—healthy men and
women of two age groups and patients with early stage CMC OA—were
recruited for the study. Sequential computed tomography scans of
the hands and wrists of all the participants were acquired while
they performed functional tasks and range-of-motion activities. The
imaging data were used to study
joint motion, stability, contact
mechanics, articular shape and congruence, as well as to model soft
tissue: cartilage and ligaments. The findings presented here
suggest that there may not be a mechanical predisposition to CMC
OA, but that women may be more susceptible to cartilage loss due to
systemic changes with aging. In addition to channeling future
research in the right direction, the furthered understanding of CMC
joint biomechanics should serve to refine the current surgical
procedures and to inspire new conservative options for disease
treatment and prevention.

▼ The elderly population of 65 years or greater is continuing to grow all over the world, with the majority experiencing at least one functional limitation for performing daily tasks. Researchers have then discovered age-related changes in neuromuscular physiology leads to muscle dysfunction that causes impaired mobility, thus making strength the primary measurement tool for muscular impairment. There is much research out there on age-associated changes in strength-related capacities through the use of isolated-
joint testing protocols. However, the majority of human performance is heavily based off of multi-
joint movements, such as getting out of a chair or walking. It is very possible that there are greater declines in strength across the lifespan than originally perceived from single-
joint testing. Not to mention, traditionally most single-
joint studies evaluated the maximal
joint force/torque at a single optimal
joint angle whereas, muscle force production is dependent upon the length of the muscle. The purpose of this study to examine the age related differences in single
joint versus multi-
joint testing at different muscle lengths. Approximately 20 healthy young participants (18-30 years) and 20 apparently healthy elderly participants (65-85 years) with no regular, structured exercise routine will be recruited through the local community to came into the lab for 2 visits 48-96 hours apart. The first visit involved the following: a) participants will be thoroughly screened to ensure all inclusion criteria are met, b) completion of all paperwork/questionnaires, and c) participants undergoing practice trials of all strength assessments. The second visit had the participants only perform the experimental strengths assessments via the Biodex System 3, Biodex Medical Systems, Shirley, NY, USA, Exerbotics Squat, Exerbotics, Tulsa, OK, USA; at random. Isometric testing was preformed at 90°, 60°, and 20° using a goniometer with participants performing 2 maximal voluntary contractions for the leg flexors and extensors. Those same positions were also applied to the squat machine with once again, participants doing 2 MVCs for each. The data was then examined using a three-way mixed factorial analyses of variance. There were no significant differences in height (P = 0.886) nor in body mass (P = 0.692). For all torque values, the young were stronger than the elderly. There were no significant interactions of Age x Mode x Angle for knee extensors (P = 0.337), the knee flexors (P = .947), and combination of them both (P =. 440). However, there were also no significant interactions of Age x Mode (P = 0.39), but in Mode x Angle (P <0.001) for knee extensors. For knee flexors there was only a significant interaction between Age x Mode (P <0.001). The combination of knee flexors and knee extensors only yielded a significant interaction of Mode x Angle (P<0.001).Follow up pair wise comparisons for knee extensors showed there was a significant difference between groups (P<0.001) and modality (P<0.001), but not angle (P =…

Purpose: Many diseases are very complex and this is especially true with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The lack of consensus on the aetiology, signs and symptoms and treatments available makes it extremely difficult for health care practitioners to treat TMDs. A clear definition of the condition itself has not been agreed on between many disciplines involved in the diagnoses and treatment of TMDs. Two competing definitions stand out in current literature. The physical medicine and dental professions define TMDs as various musculoskeletal disorders of the masticatory system. Some authors also stated that most patients with TMDs suffer primarily from a muscular disorder caused by masticatory myofascial trigger points (TrPs). The chiropractic profession defines TMDs as a group of somatic disorders that occur around the structurally integrated craniomandibular system but primarily affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) system. The term TMDs recognises that this craniomandibular pathology is a result of dysfunction in any structural area of the head or neck, not only the TMJ. This purpose of this study was to compare an adjustment treatment approach versus a soft tissue approach for the treatment of TMDs. Method: This study consisted of two groups; both the experimental and control groups consisted of 15 participants with TMDs. The participants were between the ages of 18 and 40 years. Potential participants were examined and accepted based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The experimental group received adjustments delivered to the TMJ and upper cervical spine, the control group received therapeutic ultrasound (U/S) to the xiv muscles of mastication. Objective and subjective findings were based on the treatments. Procedure: Each participant agreed to 6 treatment sessions and a seventh follow up session over a 4 week period. The participant completed a TMDs Disability Questionnaire. Algometer readings were taken over the masseter and temporalis TrPs bilaterally. Calliper readings measured the range of motion (ROM) of the TMJ, i.e. mandibular depression, protrusion and right and left deviation. The experimental group received adjustments to restricted segments of the TMJ and upper cervical spine as determined by motion palpation. The control group received therapeutic U/S to the masseter and temporalis muscles bilaterally. The same treatment procedures were administered over the study; subjective and objective readings were only taken again at visit 4 and 7. Results: In terms of subjective measurements based on the TMDs Disability Questionnaire scores, a statistically significant difference in the disability, severity and frequency of symptoms within the experimental and control groups individually, as well as the usual symptom intensity level within the control group was revealed. No statistically significant difference in terms of disability, frequency, severity and usual symptom intensity between the two treatment groups over time was revealed. In terms of objective measurements based on…

▼ M.Tech. (Chiropractic)
This study was conducted in order to determine if Chiropractic Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) to the lumbar spine and Sacroiliac joints can accelerate the recovery process of the Hamstring and Quadriceps femoris muscle and thus enabling the athlete to sustain endurance levels for a longer period of time. Participants used were recruited from the cycling community by means of word of mouth. Thirty participants that matched the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The participants were then randomly divided into two groups, a Test Group and a Control Group, of fifteen participants each. Motion and static palpation was used to detect spinal restrictions. The Test Group received Chiropractic SMT to the restricted lumbar vertebral segments and the Sacroiliac joints after the first test was completed. The participants then underwent a 30 minute recovery period after which they were re-tested. The Control Group received no treatment after the first test, but still had a 30 minute recovery period after which they were re-tested. Objective measurements were taken by making use of Cybex Isokinetic Dynamometer. The objective measurement indicated that there was an increase in muscle endurance of the Quadriceps femoris and Hamstring muscle groups for both the test and the Control Group. When the increase in Hamstring and Quadriceps femoris muscle endurance was compared between the Test and Control Group, it was the Control Group that showed a more significant increase in Quadriceps femoris muscle endurance which was greater than the increase of the Quadriceps femoris muscle endurance in the Test Group. The Control Group also showed a greater increase mean endurance of the Quadriceps femoris and Hamstring muscle. In conclusion to the study, muscle endurance in cyclists can be increased by rest alone and does not require Chiropractic SMT to restricted spinal segments.

▼ Due to ever tougher environmental and passive safety regulations, lightweight materials are
getting considerable attention to reduce vehicle weight, fuel consumption, and improve the
crashworthiness. Some of the existing promising light weight materials are Fibre-reinforced
polymers (FRP) that are made of reinforcing fibers embedded in a polymer matrix. FRP are used
extensively in automotive, aeronautic and naval engineering. FRP offers substantial
improvements over metals not only for the specific stiffness and strength, but also for their
resistance to corrosion, fatigue, and allowing part consolidation.
In this work, to understand critical problems related to the application of FRP in automotive
body production, a recyclable E-glass thermoplastic composite material was developed. Besides,
to address the critical joining problems in lightweight design, a parametric study of adhesive
joins was carried out using developed composite substrate and frequently used metallic substrate
and adhesive material by local automotive manufacturers.
Experimental results raveled that the E-glass thermoplastic composite consisted of high density
polyethylene matrix. The composite material exhibited reasonably acceptable strength for
automotive body applications. Parametric study of adhesive
joint showed that strain distributions
for the
joint configurations are more sensitive to changes in adhesive thickness, overlap length,
overlap width and surface finish. The results also showed that the lap shear strength of the
joint
primarily depends on the surface parameters of the substrate material rather than the material
itself. These results can be used by engineers/designers to design lightweight automotive body
and to predict the static strength of its adhesively bonded
joint. These results can also contribute
to the improvement of the locally built automobile body in reducing the weight.

▼ The main objective of this study is analysing and identifying the stresses on bolted rail
joint due to the wheel load to predict and minimize failures caused. This studies use the
hertz contact theory to perform the analysis for three various position of bolted rail
joint
on sleeper. This study covers only the stress and failure caused by the wheel load. The 3D
model has done on modeling package of CATIAV5R16. Assembly model has created in
assemble workbench of CATIA after individual component of
joint had created on part
work bench. The assembly of bolted rail
joint contains rail,
joint bars, bolts, nuts and
washers. After the assembly is accomplished on CATIA, it was imported in to the
ANSYS
to analyze the stress caused by vertical load. ANSYS solves governing
differential equations by breaking the problem into small elements. The wheel structure
discretized using CONTA174 element. CONTA 170 three dimensional elements is used
to discretize rail. During the analysis of wheel/rail contact in ANSYS software, the
parameters have been used axle load, angular velocity and gravitational acceleration.
From ANSYS software simulation result when the rail
joint between sleepers, the rail
joint highly exposed to the equivalent, normal, shear stresses and contact pressure than
the rest. For this reason, the service life of the rail
joint between sleepers is small as
compared to the remaining rail
joint location. When the
joint is on the sleeper, the stress
on the rail
joint is small in comparison to the rail
joint between sleepers and rail
joint
approach to the sleeper, it will be better.
