▼ Human movement is controlled by the dynamic interplay between sensory input and motor output. Varying sensory input, either deliberately through manipulation, or unintentionally via pain or injury, will alter the outgoing motor command and subsequent movement patterns. My dissertation examined these interactions by evaluating sensory-mediated changes in flexibility and assessing movement in the presence of musculoskeletal disorders with associated joint-related pain. In our first two studies, we explored changes in flexibility with sensory stimulation. First, we assessed the influence of adding transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) or self-massage using therapy balls to a stretching intervention of the plantar flexor muscles on ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, muscle activity, and muscle force. Although there was no influence of TENS, the addition of self-massage doubled the increase in range of motion achieved relative to stretching alone. Gains were more pronounced in less flexible individuals. Surprisingly, self-massage also increased plantar flexor maximal voluntary torque. To further explore the underlying mechanisms, we conducted a follow-up study that evaluated stretching with and without the addition of self-massage. Due to the decline in flexibility across the lifespan, we also included middle-aged adults in the study. The results were similar to our first study. The addition of self-massage increased flexibility gains achieved with stretching alone in both young and middle-aged adults. With the addition of self-massage, middle-aged adults exhibited greater torque increases, which were associated with augmented muscle activity. In the second two studies, we explored movement patterns as a result of joint-related pain in persons with sacroiliac joint dysfunction (SIJD) and compared them with healthy age-matched individuals. During a sit-to-stand task, individuals with SIJD had greater movement asymmetries including force loading rate when standing up, lower peak hip angle, and delayed onset of muscles key to stabilizing the joint. Furthermore, individuals with SIJD exhibited a significant reduction in the pattern of muscle activity from the painful side gluteus maximus and contralateral latissimus dorsi. The results of this dissertation underscore the importance of afferent input in modulating range of motion and coordinating movement during activities of daily living. ▼ In most robot applications, the control of the manipulator’s end-effector along a specified desired trajectory is the main concern. In these applications, the end-effector (tip) of the manipulator is required to follow a given trajectory. Several methods have been so far proposed for the motion control of robot manipulators. However, most of these control methods ignore either joint friction or joint elasticity which can be caused by the transmission systems (e.g. belts and gearboxes). This study aims at development of a comprehensive control strategy for the tip-trajectory tracking of flexible-joint robot manipulators. While the proposed control strategy takes into account the effect of the friction and the elasticity in the joints, it also provides a highly accurate motion for the manipulator’s end-effector. During this study several approaches have been developed, implemented and verified experimentally/numerically for the tip trajectory tracking of robot manipulators. To compensate for the elasticity of the joints two methods have been proposed; they are a composite controller whose design is based on the singular perturbation theory and integral manifold concept, and a swarm controller which is a novel biologically-inspired controller and its concept is inspired by the movement of real biological systems such as flocks of birds and schools of fishes. To compensate for the friction in the joints two new approaches have been also introduced. They are a composite compensation strategy which consists of the non-linear dynamic LuGre model and a Proportional-Derivative (PD) compensator, and a novel friction compensation method whose design is based on the Work-Energy principle. Each of these proposed controllers has some advantages and drawbacks, and hence, depending on the application of the robot manipulator, they can be employed. For instance, the Work-Energy method has a simpler form than the LuGre-PD compensator and can be easily implemented in industrial applications, yet it provides less accuracy in friction compensation. In addition to design and develop new controllers for flexible-joint manipulators, another contribution of this work lays in the experimental verification of the proposed control strategies. For this purpose, experimental setups of a two-rigid-link flexible-joint and a single-rigid-link flexible-joint manipulators have been employed. The proposed controllers have been experimentally tested for different trajectories, velocities and several flexibilities of the joints. This ensures that the controllers are able to perform effectively at different trajectories and speeds. Besides developing control strategies for the flexible-joint manipulators, dynamic modeling and vibration suppression of flexible-link manipulators are other parts of this study. To derive dynamic equations for the flexible-link flexible-joint manipulators, the Lagrange method is used. ABSTRACTDimitrios Papadimitriou: Changes in the kinetic capacity of shoulder joint and servis velocity in tennis players after a suggested strength and flexibility program. (Under the supervision of Paraskevi Malliou, Associate Professor)The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a muscle strengthening and flexibility program in the mobility of the shoulder and the speed of the service in tennis. The survey involved a total of 34 athletes and 35 female athletes aged 9-12 years. The athletes were randomly divided into five groups: a) Tennis service group (N = 12), b) Service and strength training group (N = 12), c) Serve and flexibility group (N = 12), d) Service, strength training and flexibility group (N = 12) and e) Control group (N = 12). The “service group” participated only in a specialized program of service training. The “service and strength training group” participated in an additional strength training program for the shoulder joint. The “service and flexibility group” participated in an additional flexibility program for the shoulder joint. The “service, strength training and flexibility group” participated in an additional strengthening and flexibility program for the shoulder. Finally, the “control group” participated in random tennis training with service without additional strength training and flexibility. The intervention program lasted 7 weeks. Participants attended a total of 3 measurements, the initial before starting the intervention program, the final measurement, immediately after the completion of the intervention program, and the conservation measurement, three months after the final measurement. The tests were the following: 1. Weighting and height measurement, 2. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of the tennis service (camera and radar gun), 3. Wrist strength assessment (dynamometer Lafayette), 4. Shoulder internal and external rotation strength assessment (dumbbells), 5. Shoulder flexibility assessment (goniometre). The results showed that the group following a combination of strength training, flexibility and serve program, had the greatest improvement in both the speed of the service, and in most measurements of the kinetic capacity and strength compared to the other groups. In conclusion, the present study suggests that the training of the service technique have to be combined with the appropriate strength training and flexibility programs for the shoulder joint. The combination of these programs is the most effective for improving the quantitative measurements and avoiding injuries to this joint.Key-words: shoulder joint, tennis athletes, service velocity, strength program, flexibility program

Research and reported literature regarding the conceptual, methodological, and training effects of stretching with different intensities are scarce. The purposes of this thesis were to: i) explore and develop methodological conditions to achieve the second purpose (studies: 1 to 3); ii) characterize the acute and chronic effects induced by different stretching intensities on skeletal muscle and joint mechanical properties (studies: 4 to 9). Nine studies were conducted with total sample size of 257 participants. The findings of the methodological studies allowed to determine and improve the assessments of passive knee extension torque-angle (study 1), perception of stretching intensity through a new scale developed (study 2), and biceps femoris long head (BF) architecture using ultrasonography (study 3). The acute responses to stretching were seen to be different depending on the stretching intensity, and distinct mechanical responses were observed for either the joint or the muscle (studies 4 to 8). In respect to long-term effects of stretching, it was observed in an 8-week high intensity stretching training pilot study that intervention changed the BF architecture and increased joint maximal range of motion (study 9). Stretching intensity it is a valuable training variable that should be considered in intervention and research contexts.

Resumo: A investigação e literatura reportada sobre aspectos conceptuais, metodológicos, e os efeitos da intervenção do alongamento com diferentes intensidades são escassos. Os propósitos desta tese foram: i) explorar e desenvolver condições metodológicas para alcançar o propósito seguinte (estudos 1 ao 3); ii) caracterizar os efeitos agudos e crónicos induzidos por diferentes intensidades de alongamento ao nível das propriedades mecânicas da articulação e do músculo (estudos 4 ao 9). Nove estudos foram conduzidos, envolvendo um total de 257 participantes. Os resultados dos estudos metodológicos permitiram determinar e desenvolver modos em aceder ao `momento passivo-ângulo articular´ na extensão passiva da perna (estudo 1), à percepção da intensidade de alongamento através de uma nova escala criada (estudo 2), e à arquitetura da longa porção do bicípite femoral (BF) (estudo 3). As respostas agudas observadas demonstraram ser diferentes face à intensidade de alongamento, e distintas respostas mecânicas foram obtidas entre a articulação e o músculo (estudos 4 ao 8). In high rise towers, reinforced concrete elevator shafts with coupling beams are extensively used as a principal structural element to resist lateral loads. The lateral load resistance of the tower is dominantly dependent on the stiffness of the load-bearing walls, and coupling beams connecting them. In an interest to study the reduction in the stiffness of high rise tower due to cracking in the coupling beams, variability in the reinforcement content, concrete grade and the effect of joint flexibility at the beam-wall intersection, this master thesis presents the analytical and finite element approaches to determine the equivalent height of the concrete coupling beams and the overall global stability of the high-rise tower. A comprehensive parametric study on 240 combinations of reinforced concrete coupling beams and 48 models of the global tower has been carried out to backtrack the effective stiffness of the RC coupling beams from the load-deflection curve. As a result, the stiffness and the equivalent height of coupling beams are computed and plotted as a function of the concretegrade, reinforcement content and aspect ratio. Additionally, the tip deflections of the towers for both the cracked & reinforced and un-reinforced & un-cracked models are also plotted as functions of the concrete grade, reinforcement content and aspect ratio.The obtained results show that the stiffness ratio and the ratio of the equivalent height to the normal height increase with the increase in the longitudinal reinforcement ratio and aspectratio but decrease with an increase in the concrete grade for both analytical and finite element methods. The tip deflection of tower is not significantly affected by an increase in the reinforcement content of slender coupling beams and vice versa for both the analytical and the finite element method. Independently of the slenderness of the composing coupling beams, the stiffness increases significantly with an increase in the concrete grade. These results show a good picture on how to choose the equivalent height in the model with no reinforcement. So, the developed diagram will be a more practical method for the designer of awhole building at the early stage design. Thick coupling beams need to be reinforced to reach the gross section’s stiffness while slender sections will have a higher stiffness with reinforcement. This would help the designer to find a more rational model without reinforcement. Using Hans Petersson’s analytical method, regarding the joint flexibility at the beam wall intersection, to exploit the full capacity of a concrete coupling beam section, the stiffness should be reduced. For global models, independently of the slenderness of the composing coupling beams, the stiffness increases significantly with an increase in the concrete grade.

▼ The use of temporary employment services as a means to achieve flexibility in die labour market led to various complications due to a lack of proper regulation. The atypical formation of the triangular employment relationship, limited rights and less favourable employment conditions of the temporary employees, multiple authority figures and their liabilities under various circumstances and the impact thereof on such employee’ collective bargaining rights caused legal uncertainty in the absence of sufficient legislation to govern it. Temporary employment agencies developed certain methods in order to evade the restrictive labour legislation and employer duties imposed on them, namely by making use of automatic termination clauses (resolutive conditions) and by categorising the temporary employee as an independent contractor. Last mentioned would effectively exclude the temporary employee from labour legislation and the protection it provides. In reaction to abovementioned problems, trade unions have been objecting to the use of temporary employment agencies and went as far as demanding the total ban thereof. This raised the question in the South African Government whether said agencies should indeed be banned. The other option is a less restrictive approach and entails the attempt to regulate these agencies by amending the current labour legislation in order to accommodate temporary employment services. In light of the fact that various proposals to amend the current South African labour legislation (especially with regard to temporary employment services) have been published in the Government Gazette, it can be deduced that the social partners ultimately chose to regulate temporary employment agencies rather than ban them altogether. From an early stage the International Labour Organisation (ILO) provided rules and regulations for the management of employment agencies in general by way of conventions and recommendations. In 1997, in order to give effect to the labour standards identified by it, the ILO brought the Private Employment Agencies Convention into existence. This document could be applied to all temporary employment agencies on an international level. This document provides for administrative regulations, the duties of the agency and the client as well as the rights of the temporary employees concerned. The ILO recommends that all of its member states incorporate the principles contained within this document in their own legislation. Temporary employment services are also used in other legal systems. For purposes of this study, the English law (United Kingdom (UK)) and the Namibian law will be scrutinised. Similar issues to those recognised in the South African law have been identified in these countries. However, each has approached said problems in different ways. The Namibian Government banned the conducting and provision of these services by way of legislation in 2007. Le changement climatique est devenu aujourd’hui le fléau environnemental qui préoccupe etmobilise le plus la communauté internationale. L’aboutissement de cette mobilisation générale reste sansdoute la mise en place du régime international de lutte contre le changement climatique dont la Conventioncadredes Nations Unies sur le changement climatique et le Protocole de Kyoto constituent les basesjuridiques. Ce régime innove en ce qu’il fixe des engagements quantifiés de réduction des émissions de gaz àeffet de serre pour les États pollueurs, mais aussi en ce qu’il instaure des mécanismes dits de « flexibilité »dont la mise en oeuvre est assortie d’un contrôle original basé sur un Comité dit de « l’observance ». Mais, endépit de toute cette production normative, il est regrettable de constater aujourd’hui que le régimeinternational du climat est un véritable échec. En effet, si la mobilisation des États ne fait aucun doute, enrevanche, les mêmes États qui ont volontairement accepté de s’engager refusent délibérément d’honorer leursengagements pour des raisons essentiellement politiques, économiques et stratégiques. Ce travail ambitionnedonc de lever le voile sur les causes de cet échec en dressant un bilan mitigé de la première périoded’engagement de Kyoto qui a pris fin en 2012, et propose des perspectives pour un régime juridique duclimat post-Kyoto efficient et efficace, en mesure d’être à la hauteur des enjeux.

Climate change has become the scourge environmental concern and mobilizes more theinternational community. The outcome of this mobilization remains probably the implementation ofinternational climate change regime for which the Climate Convention and the Kyoto Protocol are the legalbases. This system is innovative in that it sets quantified emission reduction commitments for greenhouse gasemissions (GHG) for polluters States, but also in that it establishes mechanisms known as of “flexibility”whose implementation is accompanied by a control based on a Committee known as of “compliance”. Butdespite all this normative production, it is regrettable that today the international climate regime is a realfailure. Indeed, if the mobilization of states is no doubt, however, the same states that have voluntarily agreedto engage deliberately refuse to honour their commitments for essentially political, economic and strategicreasons. This work therefore aims to shed light on the causes of this failure by developing a mixed record ofthe first Kyoto commitment ended period in 2012, and offers prospects for a legal regime of the post-Kyotoclimate and efficient, able to be up to the challenges.
