▼ Forest carbon sequestration is regarded as a viable and cost effective option for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Several research studies analyzed the effects of joint management of carbon and timber under different even-aged forest management scenarios, and concluded that carbon benefits can alter forest management schedules significantly. However, research specifically focused on the inclusion of carbon sequestration benefits into uneven-aged management has received little attention. This study determined the optimum joint management regime of timber and carbon in uneven-aged loblolly pine stands in Louisiana, and assessed management and financial effects resulting from the integration of carbon benefits into uneven-aged management. The USDA Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) –Southern (SN) variant was used to generate both growth and carbon data of uneven-aged loblolly pine stands. The generalized Faustmann model for uneven-aged management was applied to calculate the land expectation value (LEV) at every level of residual basal area and cutting cycle. In order to analyze the effects of changes in interest rate, stumpage prices, and future land values, comparative static analyses were carried out at three different interest rates, stumpage prices and future land values. This study determined the residual BA of 60 ft2/acre and cutting cycle of 18 years as the optimum timber management regime of uneven-aged loblolly pine stands at the interest rate of 4% and 2010 stumpage prices in Louisiana. Changes in interest rates and stumpage prices altered the optimum management schedules significantly, but effects of changes in future land value were minimal. In the joint optimization of timber production and carbon sequestration, carbon benefits were found influential in both financial and management perspectives. At every level of interest rates, the joint management of timber and carbon increased the LEV, extended the cutting cycle, and shifted the residual stocking to higher level. The joint management of timber and carbon under uneven-aged management is profitable, and the carbon offset would provide an important additional income source to landowners in the southern USA.

One of the most popular state reforms that have opened ?spaces? for a wider and deeper participation of citizens at the local level has been the decentralisation process. Democratic Decentralisation is the transfer of resources and power to lower level authorities which are largely or wholly independent of higher levels of government and which are democratic. In India, certain cases of Democratic decentralisation have achieved both greater participation of marginal groups and social justice like in the left ruled states of West Bengal and Kerala. In both cases, decentralisation has been credited with ensuring the participation of subordinate groups ? such as women, landless groups, sharecroppers and small peasants ? and being directly linked to the pursuit of redistributive policies that have had pro-poor outcomes. Decentralised natural resources management has assumed importance as a development strategy, because of the claims that it can contribute towards sustainable livelihoods. Almost all the developing countries have initiated the process of decentralisation and India is one such country that was involved in this process for a long time. The introduction of development programmes with people?s participation as the core theme is an indication of the progress of this process. Particularly, in the programmes like Watershed Management, Water Users Associations, and Joint Forest Management this becomes evident. Generally, the discussions on local self-governance or democratic decentralization and participatory natural resource management do not intersect and take place in somewhat independent domains. Baumann (1998; 2000) had also emphasized the need to bring the two domains together. ▼ The Joint Forest Management (JFM) policy was implemented across India during the 1990s with the vision of combining forest conservation and rural livelihood improvement goals through creating local level partnerships between the Forest Department and the local villagers. The difference between the rhetoric and the reality has been widely documented, as has the great variety in outcomes of JFM seen in forests and villages across India, raising the question about the reasons for such diversity. In this research the departure point of forests as a common pool resource (CPR) is taken, central to which is the concept of collective action through which forest users devise rules to manage the forests. Collective action lies at the heart of the JFM policy. One reason for the variety in outcomes of JFM at a local level could be the differing levels of involvement of external actors- seen here as individuals and organisations other than the local forest users, with the key external actors being the Forest Department and NGOs. This research uses a comparative analysis of four cases in which collective action is functioning and two cases in which collective action is not functioning, with the level of key external actor involvement varying across the cases. The influence of external actors is measured through the independent variable indicators: provision of relevant knowledge, management and social skills, communication channels and financial support. The sustainability of collective action (the dependent variable) is assessed using the indicators: the functioning of collective action, the level of understanding of JFM policy, awareness and involvement of forest users, connections with external actors, confidence in future benefits and the perceived ability to independently manage JFM. The main conclusion is that external actor involvement is not a pre-requisite for functioning collective action, however external actors do occupy a central and powerful position to influence the level of sustainability of collective action. Whilst there are individual positive cases of external actors influencing individual indicators, there is no clear correlation between external actor involvement and the indicators for sustainability of collective action, indicating that their involvement does not necessarily lead to more sustainable collective action. The influence of external actors is determined at an individual, rather than an organisational level and is limited due to a lack of policy knowledge, limited efforts in outreach towards marginalised groups, poor communication between external actors themselves and the low level to which JFM is institutionalised within the Forest Department. The study concludes with policy recommendations for external actors at a local level to strengthen the sustainability of JFM in Maharashtra. Advisors/Committee Members: van Laerhoven, Dr Frank.

Joint forest management (JFM), which seeks to involve local communities in the management of state-owned forests, was started in India in 1990. One of the prime objectives of JFM was to restock degraded forest areas, which has not been uniformly achieved across the country. Variation in the success of JFM has been attributed to several socioeconomic and organizational factors. Existing literature, however, has ignored the role of intracommunity strategic interactions in JFM outcomes. Similarly, roles of social preferences and individual time preferences have also been overlooked. In this research, JFM outcomes have been analyzed through the lens of intracommunity strategic interactions, social preferences, and endogenous and good-specific time preferences. A model of strategic interactions among households of a village has been developed, and it has been shown that in JFM households play a public goods game. Equilibrium of the game has been analyzed, and effects of various model parameters on equilibrium participation have been investigated. An empirical study has been carried out in five villages in central India to observe the role of social preferences in JFM outcomes. It has been found that the presence of social preference is strongly correlated with success in JFM in the village. Since in JFM households incur costs in the beginning and get benefits later, individual time preferences are crucial for JFM outcomes. Time preference analysis is usually done using Samuelson’s discounted utility (DU) model, which expresses individual time preference by a unitary construct – discount rate, and does not consider endogenous and good-specific time preferences. In this research, a theoretical model is developed, and an empirical study is used to show that households’ time preferences are endogenous and good specific. A model for the evolution of other-regarding preferences in JFM has also been developed, and it has been shown that other-regarding preferences may evolve in JFM provided a stimulus is given, community’s dependence on the forest is high, and alternatives to forest resources are available.

Wildlife and human needs are often enmeshed within discursive representations and praxis of wildlife conservation in the Global South. In India, more than three quarters of forested area is “unprotected.” These spaces are categorized as Reserve Forests and support diverse flora and fauna within complex landscapes of human settlement and agricultural fields. Much of this biodiversity remains understudied and underrepresented. This dissertation explores how biophysical and social factors coproduce space to create a conducive landscape for wildlife in the semi-arid Eastern Ghats of South India. I employ a mixed-methods approach to respond to calls for more integrated research in conservation, and use a range of data sources such as semi-structured interviews, household surveys, faunal surveys and satellite imagery. The findings illustrate how livelihood diversity and everyday practices of rural communities living on the periphery of four Reserve Forests shape both landscape composition and structure. Species distribution models that assess relative likelihoods of distribution of the Sloth Bear, Four-horned Antelope, Wild boar and Leopard in the study area provide insight into the socio-ecological conditions under which shared spaces are created and maintained. This allows me to untangle the relationships mediating wildlife presence in unprotected forests. By drawing on lifeworlds of a marginalized forest dependent community, I argue that representations of Reserve Forests need to be contextualized based on actual vegetation characteristics and the relations between people, wildlife and forests. The results show that heterogeneity in land-use/cover produces a permeable landscape that resists precise classification. This dissertation attempts to disrupt traditional conservation paradigms by showing that wildlife persists in human-dominated landscapes through a complex intersection of landscape composition and structure, forest management policies, everyday practices of rural communities and mutual adaptations between wildlife and people. Thus wildlife conservation in Reserve Forests should understand the landscape matrix, take into consideration diverse land uses and acknowledge the value of forests to rural communities.

▼ Forest management is typically associated with a high degree of uncertainty, since it relies on predictions of natural growth processes over long periods of time. A number of methods exist for mitigating the risk associated with this uncertainty, but few have the ability to explicitly minimize risk. This study will present a case study on dealing with uncertainty and risk in an applied setting. The selected study area was the Tillamook State Forest, located in northwest Oregon. The primary objectives were to quantify the uncertainty and assess its impact on forest management. An additional objective was to assess the application of non-linear probabilistic programming on a large forest management problem. Uncertainty was quantified through regression models that predicted actual outcomes from planned outcomes, as well as the error associated with predictions of actual outcomes. The effects of uncertainty on forest management were assessed through two chance-constrained programming formulations. One maximized the harvest volume under a given level of risk, and the other minimized the maximum level of risk associated with a given forest management plan. Both were subject to sustainable inventory and forest structure constraints. The results showed that these models could substantially increase the probability of achieving a given forest management outcome, at the cost of only a minimal deviation (4 to 6%) from the risk neutral position. These results were however in contrast to an analysis of risk preferences, which showed significant differences in the outcomes associated with various levels of risk. This indicated that uncertainty could not be considered without the decision maker's attitude towards risk. In addition, post-optimality analysis of the model results showed that correlated yield coefficients had an insignificant impact, and that the assumption of zero covariance was justified for this study. Finally, it was also demonstrated that chance- constrained programming can be applied to large scale forest management problems, but that the solvability of these problems were determined by the formulation type. ▼ Over the past decade the South African forestry industry has gradually experienced the ramifications of labour scarcity, increases in labour costs, the effect of HIV and AIDS and increasing timber demand. Consequently, this has led to an increase in the mechanisation rate, especially in timber harvesting operations. Due to the labour challenges in South Africa, mechanised forestry equipment has increasingly been required to operate in complex forest conditions, such as coppiced compartments, where they have not operated before. It therefore occurs that harvesters are either used in certain coppiced compartments with uncertain productivity expectations, or the harvesters are not used in these compartments due to a lack of productivity knowledge. The influence that certain factors have on harvester productivity and stump volume loss – factors such as coppice regeneration practices and stem form – is poorly understood and has not been quantified. No scientific research exists regarding the effects of coppice compartments on the productivity of a harvester and the amount of stump volume waste. This research aimed at determining the influence of tree volume, tree form, stem felled first and distance between stems on the productivity of an excavator based harvester in coppiced double, coppiced single and planted Eucalyptus grandis pulpwood compartments. Furthermore, the research determined whether there was any stump volume waste, and quantified how much of it was due to excessive stump heights by the harvester. Through regression analysis, productivity equations were derived to make productivity predictions in both coppiced and planted compartments. All stumps were evaluated for waste and the average stump volume waste in coppiced double, coppiced single and planted trees was determined. The research results showed that planted trees had the highest productivity across all tree sizes, followed by coppiced single trees and then coppiced double stems. When harvesting a 0.2 m3 tree, the mean harvester productivity was 8.7 m3 per PMH in coppiced double trees, 13.8 m3 per PMH in coppiced single trees and 16.1 m3 per PMH in planted trees. In coppiced double stems the productivity was not significantly influence by the distance between stems. However, the productivity was significantly influenced by the stem felled first. The regression results showed that if the smaller stem was felled first, the productivity would increase if the larger stem’s volume was less than 0.18 m3; however where the larger stem was greater than 0.18 m3, the relationship was reversed. In addition, the productivity for both coppiced single trees and coppiced double stems were significantly influenced by stem form. The poorly formed trees had low productivity compared to the trees with good form. Considering the internet usage in Asia, it is found that China tops among the Asian countries that followed by Japan and India ranks 3rd in position. The literature review has helped to consider in the present research work aspects like consumer privacy, consumer inclination and consumer personalization in the field of Internet Marketing. Most of the literatures related to Internet Marketing which were referred had the focus on three important perspectives that is, Consumer, Company and 3rd Party Agency. The research undertaken intends to study the phenomena related to the growth and the trends in Internet Marketing. Hence 3 entities namely Consumers, Company and 3rd Party Agency were taken into consideration. The questionnaire was prepared for each entity and the opinion on the questions was derived through personal interviews and through contacts on telephone or emails. The survey conducted involved Consumers of different age, gender and were from different walks of life. The Company respondents were the Executives or Managers while the 3rd Party Agency respondents were the Owners of the organization. The questionnaire designed had more than 30 questions which were grouped into four categories viz. A, B, C and D. The aspects covered under Category A were related to gender, type of occupation and income of the respondents. Aspects like growth and impact of Internet Marketing on the Traditional Marketing were listed in Category B. Category C had aspects related to generation of revenue, incidences of fraud and Government policies in the field of Internet Marketing. Lastly aspect like flexibility within Internet and Traditional Marketing and various other factors which are directly related to form the future trend in the field of Internet Marketing were considered in Category D. Based on the analysis of the data collected following are the highlights of the research work. It is true that the mandatory awareness about internet is necessary for the Internet Marketing. Consumer, Company and 3rd party agency respondents agree regarding mandatory internet awareness for the growth of Internet Marketing in this Study. It was found that majority of respondents Strongly Agree with the view that in present market scenario there is surely the growth of Internet Marketing. The study has revealed that Consumer Strongly Agee the impact of Internet Marketing in todays market scenario. Also the Company and 3rd Party were found to express same opinion. All the respondents Agree that number of players (service providers) in Internet Marketing is bound to increase in the near future, so as to cater to the increasing needs of consumers.

▼ Though International Joint Ventures (IJVs) are widespread, their high failure rate, attributed to the difficulty of managing them, has increased interest in their management. IJV research has seen knowledge sharing and learning between partners to be essential for success, and has noted that this is easier when the international partners are culturally aligned with one another. The process of integrating knowledge across national boundaries and between people from dissimilar cultures is a challenge, because it requires the firms to be embedded into the local market. IJVs need to ensure appropriate approaches for acquiring the knowledge and learning they require. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the knowledge sharing and learning processes that IJV managers undertake, focusing on the “micro-level” of IJV manager action and interaction. It explores how managers of the partners and of IJVs overcome barriers to knowledge sharing. This research combines internationalisation process, knowledge sharing and organisational learning research to develop an overarching theoretical framework for IJV learning that positions the IJV managers’ roles within the learning process within IJVs. It then examines theoretical ideas concerning the ‘microfoundations’ of learning to consider the structural arrangements, the individual capabilities and the organisational processes of the IJV that might help IJV managers to learn from their partners, to develop capacity within their IJV, and to help the internationalisation of their partners. This study explores knowledge sharing and learning within the highly successful Samsung-Tesco Homeplus retail IJV formed in 1999 in South Korea as part of Tesco’s internationalisation process. The retail context is appropriate to study the concepts of IJV learning, because retail businesses need to be highly embedded in their market through strong ties with their local customer base, which increases the need for internationalising retail firms to gain knowledge and learning from local IJV partners. The case partner firms, having complementary resource bases but facing barriers of dissimilarity (Korean electronics manufacturer and UK retail firm), yielded a rich context for examining how these were overcome to achieve learning. Data from semi-structured interviews with top and middle level managers and industry experts were triangulated with multiple sources of secondary data. A microanalysis approach for data analysis enabled analytical abstraction to theory. The study draws three broad findings regarding the overarching theoretical framework for IJV learning. First, IJV partners can themselves develop strategies that help knowledge sharing that will enhance the prospects for IJV success. The IJV partner’s prior capabilities are critical for building and sustaining their IJV relationship prior to and during the IJV. ▼ Since the 1990s there has been an increasing shift in the management of natural resources from state control to participatory approaches. Many developing countries, including Kenya, have promoted participatory forest management (PFM) as a strategy for enhancing forest conservation and the sustainable use of forest resources through community participation. Drawing on a case study of the Kereita forest, in the central highlands of Kenya, this research explores the impact of PFM on community livelihood. Using a post-structural political ecology approach and qualitative research methods, I conducted and analysed 18 semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that the implementation of PFM has changed how the community access forest products. PFM, through processes of inclusion and exclusion, has had both positive and negative effects on community livelihoods. New opportunities were opened, for instance, increased awareness about forest conservation led to a women’s group developing alternative livelihood pathways. In contrast, the development of a new eco-lodge disrupted community plans to rehabilitate that area. This case study also reflected other critiques of PFM in terms of who holds ultimate authority; ultimately, the government retained a lot of control in forest management, and PFM processes have concentrated power with the government and channelled certain livelihood outcomes that benefit the already wealthy. These uneven power relations between the community and the government produce and perpetuate conflicts in implementing PFM hence hampering livelihood improvement. Furthermore, I argue that PFM has created and embedded both visible and invisible boundaries – through fences and permits, for instance – that regulate what takes place where, and who accesses what. To sustain the development of good community livelihoods through PFM, this research calls for continued interrogations of power imbalances within current PFM structures. ▼ Many parks are now using social media sites to connect with visitors but little is known about how effective these efforts have been. This study examined the influence of social media use on interpretive outcomes and place attachment. Visitors to four parks in the San Francisco Bay Area were surveyed twice, once as they exited the park (n = 529) and a second time via email (n = 216) six to ten weeks after visiting. In both surveys, respondents were asked how they use social media to experience parks and to what extent they experienced interpretive outcomes (intellectual and emotional connections and program evaluation) and place attachment (place identity and place dependence). Social media use was measured by asking respondents how frequently they interacted with the park on social media sites, how frequently they shared their experience at the park on social media sites and how important using social media was to them. The activity involvement scale developed by Kyle, G., Absher, J., Norman, W., Hammitt, W. & Jodice, L. (2007) was used to measure how important social media was to respondents as a leisure activity. A modified version of Paine's (2011) phases of engagement scale was adapted to segment respondents into five social media engagement categories based on the extent to which they engaged with parks on social media sites. The engagement categories were then compared to interpretive outcome and place attachment scores. The results showed that engagement categories were positively related to interpretive outcome and place attachment scores for both onsite survey and email survey respondents. Using social media as a source of park information, interacting on park-sponsored social media sites and using social media during the park visit had statistically significant, positive relationships to interpretive outcomes and place attachment. The more respondents used social media to experience parks, the more connections to resource meanings they made. One would expect those connections to diminish over time but results suggested that using social media to share park experiences in the weeks following a park visit allowed visitors to maintain higher levels of interpretive connections and place attachment than those who didn't use social media to experience the park. In addition, passive interaction with park-sponsored social media also continued to influence outcomes in the weeks following the park visit. Other factors that emerged as significant predictors of interpretive outcomes and place attachment were: time spent so far in the Bay Area, number of annual visits, the locality of visitors, following a park on a social media site and repeat visitation. These results provide an initial indication that social media "works", insofar as using it to experience a park influences interpretive outcomes and place attachment. However, only a few visitors were actively engaging with parks on social media sites. ▼ A review of the literature reveals the strengths and limitations of various climate adaptation frameworks and illuminates a general path by which a type of adaptation can be achieved. A number of useful frameworks exist but the number of independent case studies demonstrating the adaptation process in a detailed manner is much more limited. Additionally, components of the various adaptation processes can often seem vague and concepts such as adaptability ill-defined. For land managers approaching climate adaptation independently can be difficult, particularly in the areas of goal creation and vulnerability assessment. Within frameworks where user-defined adaptation goals dictate whether or not adaptability will be achieved, providing guidance on definition of these concepts is particularly important. To explore and improve the usability of climate adaptation concepts we applied them on Michigan Technological University’s Ford Forest. We reviewed the literature on climate change adaptation and applied the knowledge gained to the creation of a climate change adaptation-focused management plan. We assessed the difference between business-as-usual management and climate adaptation and identified where either had occurred in order to 1) better define climate change adaptation operationally, and 2) demonstrate how and where it had occurred within our plan. In doing so we hope to demonstrate explicitly methods for climate change adaptation planning and expand the definition of climate adapted systems. Through application of the principles of these frameworks, we have found that identifying priority values early in the management planning process while recognizing future climate uncertainty will improve the ability to generate meaningful, effective management actions. Recognition of organizational limitations and potential flaws in the decision-making process can help to improve planning outcomes. We have proposed a logical way to assess decision-making outcomes in a climate adaptation planning context. Vulnerability indices are useful for identifying areas of risk in a forest, but a general focus on adaptability is still necessary to respond to future climate uncertainty. Operationally, climate change adaptation refers to the broad category of planning and management measures undertaken to protect specific values from the negative effects of anthropogenic climate change.
