▼ Cyberspace has diversified and pluralized people’s daily experiences of religion in unprecedented ways. By studying several websites and weblogs that have a religious orientation, different layers of religious authority including “religious hierarchy, structures, ideology, and sources” (Campbell, 2009) can be identified. Also, using Weber’s definition of the three types of authority, “rational-legal, traditional, and charismatic” (1968), the specific type of authority that is being presented on blogosphere can be recognized. The Internet presents a level of liberty for the discussion of sensitive topics in any kind of religious cyberspace, specifically the Islamic one. In this way, the Internet is expanding the number and range of Muslim voices, which may pose problems for traditional forms of religious authority or may suggest new forms of authority in the Islamic world. The interaction between the Internet and religion is often perceived as contradictory, especially when it is religion at its most conservative practice. While the international and national applications of the Internet have increased vastly, local religious communities, especially fundamentalists, perceived this new technology as a threat to their local cultures and practices. If we look at the Internet as a central phenomenon of contemporary modernity that interacts with practiced fundamentalist religious traditions, we can ask how broad the interactions are between religious fundamentalism and the Internet and whether these relations can be reconciled. More specifically, this thesis presents a study of the junction of the Internet and religious fundamentalism reviewing the presentation of Shiite religious authority on the Persian blogosphere. As a case study, Persian weblogs are studied for content analysis for this thesis. Weblogs’ texts are analyzed to find evidences for Shiite beliefs and shared identity, usages and interpretations of the main Shiite religious texts, references to the role of recognized Shiite leaders, and descriptions of Shiite structural patterns of practices and organizations. This research will demonstrate how the Internet has been culturally constructed, modified, and adapted to the Iranian community’s needs and how the Shiite fundamentalist community of Iran has been affected by it. Based on one of the most structured research in this area, the study by Baezilai-Nahon and Barzilai (2005), in this article I identify four principal dimensions of religious fundamentalism as they interact with the Internet: hierarchy, patriarchy, discipline, and seclusion.

L'histoire contemporaine de l'Iran est marquée par deux révolutions qui ont bouleversé les relations entre l’Etat, la religion et la société. L’objectif de cette recherche est d’analyser l’évolution de ces rapports sous l’impact de la Révolution constitutionnelle de 1906/1907 et de la Révolution islamique de 1979, en soulignant que tous ces changements ont été influencés ou ont influencé l’économie de l’Iran. La Révolution constitutionnelle de 1906/1907 a été l’aboutissement des évolutions qui étaient à l’origine des conflits entre les modernistes et les forces attachées à l’ordre ancien. Elle a fait basculer le rapport de force en faveur des courants et des acteurs œuvrant pour l’entrée de l’Iran dans la modernité. Entre la Révolution constitutionnelle et la Révolution islamique, les forces ont subi des modifications importantes qui ont, tour à tour, favorisé les trois pôles du pouvoir : la monarchie et sa cour, le clergé et les élites modernistes. La montée au pouvoir de Reza shah a rompu l’équilibre fondé sur la Constitution en faveur de la monarchie au détriment du pôle religieux en s’appuyant sur les élites modernistes. L’invasion de l’Iran par les alliés et l’exil forcé de Reza Shah ont contribué à la montée des sentiments nationalistes hostiles à l’Occident. La nationalisation des ressources pétrolières par le gouvernement Mossadegh fait suite à cette évolution portée par une société iranienne acquise à ce nationalisme. Plus tard, la société et la religion se sont rejointes pour contester l’Etat autoritaire et répressif des Pahlavi. Cette dynamique aboutira à la Révolution de 1979 et donnera au pays un nouveau régime politique reflétant les rapports de forces entre les acteurs de cette deuxième révolution que le pays a connue soixante-douze ans après la Révolution constitutionnelle. La Révolution islamique de 1979 a été la principale conséquence du passage d’un « nationalisme autoritaire » incarné par Reza Shah Pahlavi à un « nationalisme libéral » porté par le Dr Mossadegh, puis à un « nationalisme religieux » représenté par l’ayatollah Khomeini.

The exsisting history of Iran is noticeable regarding to two revolutions witch mystified the relation among the State, the religion and the society. The objective of this research is to analyze the evolution oh these reports under the impact of the constitutional Revolution of 1906/1907 and the islamic Revolution of 1979. It shoud be emphasized that all these changes effected the economyof Iran. The constitutional revolution of 1906/1907 was the result of the evolutions witch were at the origin of the conflicts between the modernistic ones and forces attached to the old order.It turnes over the strength in favour as of currents and of the actors working for the entry of Iran into modernity. Between the constitutional Revolution and the islamic Revolution, the forces underwent important modifications witch have, in turn, supported the three poles of the power : monarchy and its court, cleargy and elites modernistic. Predmet ovog rada predstavlja geografski prostor sliva Lima od Plavskog jezera do brane HE ''Potpeć'', kao jedne prostorno-funkcionalne cjeline,koji se prostire na teritorijama država Crne Gore (2334 km ²), Srbije (2407,7 km ² ) i Albanije (115,5 km ²) i Širindareh sliv na NE Irana.Korišćenjem računarsko-grafičkog metoda programa "WintErO", u proučavanju oticanja i intenziteta erozije, vrijednosti površina (površina slivova, površina između izohipsi i sl.) i dužina, tj.rastojanja sa karte (dužina glavnog vodotoka, dužina linije vododjelnice i sl.) veoma precizno je obrađena, što nije uvijek bio slučaj kod primjene mehaničkih instrumenata, planimetara i kurvimetra. Obradom dobijenih fizičko-geografskih inputa, nakon unosa podataka, dobijeni su rezultati. Detaljan prikaz ove računarsko grafičke metode predstavljen je u rezultatima ove doktorske disertacije. Dio istraživanja ovog doktorskog rada obavljen je na području sjeveroistoka Irana, u slivu Širindareh. Oko 100 miliona hektara iranske teritorije je izloženo eroziji ili drugim hemijskih i fizičkih degradacija.Erozija vodom ugoržava velike površine u Iranu, uništavajući pri tom plodna poljoprivredna zemljišta. Skoro 35 miliona hektara Irana je pod uticajem različitih vrsta erozije vodom. Ova činjenica je bila povod i izazov da se i ova istraživanja dijelom osvrnu na ovu problematiku u Iranu, testirajući pri tom novopripemljeni model WIntErO na jednom od slivova u Iranu.

Cette recherche se propose d’examiner les racines de l’éthique philosophique chez Ostad Elahi (1895-1974) et la place de ce penseur dans la tradition de l’éthique iranienne et gréco-islamique. Celle-ci comprend, aux côtés de l’éthique philosophique, deux autres courants à savoir l’éthique religieuse et l’éthique mystique/spirituelle. En partant de la division classique qui, dans la philosophie antique, établit le couple theôria/praxis introduit dans la philosophie islamique, nous verrons quels sont, pour Ostad Elahi, les fondements théoriques sur lesquels il fonde son approche de l’âme et bâtit son éthique. De ce socle dérive alors l’articulation de la pratique éthique et spirituelle, une pratique aux effets thérapeutiques qu’il définit comme une « nouvelle médecine » de l’âme. À partir de ce matériau, le fils d’Ostad Elahi, Bahram Elahi (né en 1931), docteur en médecine, va développer cette approche galénique et proposer un schéma du soi qui rapproche les éléments issus de la tradition des apports de la modernité.

This research examines the roots of philosophical ethics in the works and teaching of Ostad Elahi (1895-1974), placing his contributions in the wider comparative context of earlier Greek, Zoroastrian and Islamic traditions of philosophical ethics. Beginning with the classical philosophical distinction of theȏria and praxis, we move on to outline the theoretical foundations of Ostad Elahi’s vision of the soul and ethics. There the metaphysical and spiritual backdrop of Ostad Elahi’s “theory” are complemented by a comprehensive course of ethical and spiritual practice designed to have transformative influences on the soul’s spiritual perfection, an approach which Ostad Elahi refers to as a “new medicine” of the soul. Starting from this teaching, Ostad Elahi’s son, the physician Bahram Elahi (b. 1931), has elaborated on these traditional conceptions for contemporary audiences, proposing a conception of the self where earlier philosophical and spiritual elements are expressed within the perspectives and language of modern science.

▼ This dissertation connects the cultural theory of space with specific aesthetic and architectural practices in the history of modernism that are entangled with the past and present of Iran, its artifacts, and its politics. As a response to different forms of alienation and despair symptomatic of Iran’s unfinished modernization plans throughout the twentieth century, this study reveals proposals for possible changes to the global ethics and language of space and Iran’s socio-cultural modernization through overlooked sources in this context: Paul Klee’s Miniature series (1916-1918) and Louis Kahn’s unrealized master plan for the New Civic Center in Tehran (1973-1974). The first part of this study outlines the condition of globalism and its new coordinates with reference to the spatial theories of the later Heidegger and Deleuze. It then focuses on Klee’s narrative of spatiality as a result of his critical engagement with Persian miniatures. Through his Miniature series and the Twittering Machine, Klee maps an archeological analysis that identifies certain historical shifts in the Iranian discursive language of space, a shift into the machinic sensibility that poses a critique to pure “representation” and the hierarchical model of space. This dissertation further looks at Kahn’s proposal for the Tehran Civic Center that was the site of intense struggle between centers of power and culture in Iran. Kahn’s democratic layout for a modern urban space in the heart of the Iranian metropolis suggests an indirect resistance to “authority” in the form of a politicized and institutionalized culture and identity. This analysis reveals the works of Klee and Kahn as silent, invisible practices: while Klee opts under the pressure of a rising nationalism to cover up his Persian sources, Kahn’s democratic blueprint is excluded and erased by a successive pseudo-developer. This study argues that these tragic encounters of modernity with cultural place are not signs of failure, but rather can be understood as political practices that form the promise of a new reality, a new ethos as the intensive globalism yet to come. Through an engagement with the later Heidegger, Deleuze, Klee, and Kahn, this dissertation offers the theory of “transversality” as a silent political and ethical attitude of modernity that encounters every place in its living conditions of multiplicity, simultaneity, and movement and within the real, contingent effects of identity, representation, and authority. ▼ Iran is but one country that gives real-world application to the Orwellian mantra that “history is written by the victors.” Indeed, the militant clerics, who consolidated power at the expense of all the revolutionary factions, have worked tirelessly to present their version of the Iranian Revolution’s history as the only version—one best encapsulated by the state’s preferred revolutionary slogan: “Independence, Freedom, Islamic Republic” (esteqlal, azadi, jomhuri-ye eslami). For years, the Iranian government has presented this one-sided history to the benefit of its ruling class and self-affirming ideology. Just as the events of 1978-79 are far more complex and disputed than the state would like to admit, the historic uprising of 2009 is equally contentious. More than five years after the revolt, the Iranian government continues to refer to the Green Movement as “the sedition”—a conspiracy orchestrated from abroad and without organic roots within the country. Inspired by the studies that contested the “official” narrative of the Iranian Revolution, this work aspires to do the same with the “official” narrative of the uprising in 2009. The events of 2009 are historically consequential not only because they could have dire consequences for the Iranian government in the long-term, but also because of what they tell the reader about the critical juncture in which Iran’s experiment with Islamism finds itself. After 30 years of Islamic rule, a new generation of activists, who were raised under the ideology and authority of the Islamic Republic, challenged that state by co-opting the system’s discourse, history, and symbolism, all of which they reprogrammed with subversive meaning and leveled against the state with a profound sense of purpose. In doing so, activists brought to the fore in a fiery manner the post-Islamist shift that has been taking place in Iran in recent years. This study takes the archival footage from the events in question, interviews, memoirs, diplomatic cables, activist articles, news data, all of which are intertwined with the research material from the history of the Iranian Revolution in order to produce the context necessary to understanding the tectonic shift the uprising in 2009 represents. La production de copies littéraires connaît un important développement à Chirâz en Iran sous la dynastie des Turkmènes Aq Qoyyûnlû entre 1467 et 1503. Peut-on cerner des caractéristiques de cette production ? Se différencie-t-elle de celles d’autres centres contemporains, notamment Tabrîz et Hérât ? En examinant un corpus de soixante manuscrits datés, cette étude vise à analyser les différentes composantes du codex de Chirâz (papier, mise en page et réglure, écritures, reliure, …) ainsi que les décors (enluminures et illustrations) mis en œuvre afin d’en dégager les spécificités. Héritiers de la tradition de livres décorés timourides, des artisans du livre deviennent les experts de ce qu’il convient une production en série d’items finement calligraphiés, toujours enluminés et souvent ornés d’illustrations. La présente étude permet de montrer l’évolution d’une production de cour à une conception de copies par des ateliers privés, à un moment où la gestion du pouvoir passe d’un système princier à un gouvernorat de généraux turkmènes vers 1480. Cette période est alors marquée par des changements visuels importants, notamment l’usage d’un style particulier d’écriture nasta‘lîq, employé par les copistes de la ville, des formes d’enluminures stéréotypées, ainsi que l’emploi de styles de peintures qualifiés de « commerciaux ». Il en résulte une forte identité visuelle des manuscrits réalisés à Chirâz dans le dernier tiers du XVe siècle, qui sont largement exportés à travers le monde iranien. La pérennité sera assurée au cours du siècle suivant sous la dynastie safavide par les mêmes familles d’artisans, mais aussi sur une plus grande échelle, dans le domaine ottoman notamment.

The production of belletristic copies encountered an important development in the city of Shiraz in Iran between 1467 and 1503. Is it possible to determine characteristics of this production? Are differences visible with manuscripts made in other centres, such as Tabriz and Herat? By examining a corpus of sixty dated manuscripts, this study aims to analyse the physical components of the Shiraz codex (paper, layout and ruling, binding…) as well as decorations (illuminations and illustrations) in order to identify specificities.The book craftsmen inherited their skills and the styles they use from the former Timurid period. They specialized in a mass production of neatly copied items, always adorned with illuminations, and often illustrated. The present research underlines the interactions between this manuscript production and the historical events in Shiraz, in a time when the governorate of Turkmen generals replaced the rule of the prince. The transfer of production from the court atelier to private workshops echoes this change of power. At the same time profound visual changes distinguish the book production, notably a peculiar writing style of nasta‘lîq, only used by Shiraz copyists, as well as stereotyped forms of illuminations and various “commercial” styles of paintings.As a result, a strong visual identity characterises the Chiraz…

▼ This multi-disciplinary research project explores the religious and cultural foundations within the “master commemorative narratives” that frame Israeli and Iranian political discourse. In articulating their grievances against one another, Israeli and Iranian leaders express the tensions between religion, nationalism, and modernity in their own societies. The theoretical and methodological approach of this dissertation is constructivist-interpretivist. The concept of “master commemorative narratives” is adapted from Yael Zerubavel’s study of ritualized remembrance in Israeli political culture, and applied to both Israeli and Iranian foreign policy. Israel’s master commemorative narrative draws heavily upon the language of the Hebrew Bible, situating foreign policy discourse within a paradigm of covenantal patrimony, exile, and return, despite the unrelenting hostility of eternal enemies and “the nations.” Iran’s master commemorative narrative expresses Iranian suspicion of foreign encroachment and interference, and of the internal corruption that they engender, sacralizing resistance to the forces of evil in the figurative language and myths of pre-Islamic tradition and of Shi‘a Islam. Using a constructivist-interpretive methodological approach, this research offers a unique interpretive analysis of the parallels between these narratives, where they intersect, and where they come into conflict. It highlights both the broad appeal and the diverse challenges to the components of these “master” narratives within Israeli and Iranian politics and society. The conclusion of this study explains the ways in which the recognition of religious and cultural conflicts through the optic of master commemorative narratives can complement the perspectives of other theoretical approaches and challenge the conventions of Security Studies. It also suggests some of the potential practical applications of this research in devising more effective international diplomacy. ▼ “Global Positioning Semantics” is a political communication strategy by which a leader attempts to make his or her personal imagined world map, a person’s understanding of his or her own country’s relationship to the rest of the world, that of the entire nation. By analyzing the President of Uzbekistan’s speeches and interviews spanning the twenty years after the fall of the USSR, I traced Karimov’s description of the future Uzbek nation and other global actors—the USSR, Russia, the United States, Europe, China, Belligerent Islam, Iran, Turkey, Central Asia, and Afghanistan. In this project, in-depth qualitative analysis of the President’s statements is accompanied by charts of the specific values—both traditional and modern—that Karimov assigned to the future Uzbek nation repeatedly changed those that he attached to the other global actors as the utility of association with the actors became more or less advantageous. Like the north and south poles, Karimov’s vision of the world was suspended between the negatively-chargedsymbolism of the Uzbek nation’s Soviet past and the positively-charged ideal of the nation’s glorious future. Countries and non-state actors that the President positioned near the negatively-charged pole are the recipients of the negative symbols associated with that pole. Actors that he situated near the positively-charged pole, Karimov described as already possessing some of the qualities of the future great Uzbek nation. The close relationship between the countries described with these complementary traits and the Republic of Uzbekistan allegorically advances the nation toward the realization of their destiny. I posit that by ascribing the characteristics of the Uzbek nation to other state andnon-state actors, Islam Karimov indicated to the Uzbek people alongside which powers he believed the nation rightfully belonged as they established their post-Soviet national identity. Cette thèse vise à analyser les discours sur l’Iran dans les récits de voyageurs germanophones entre 1906 et 1941. Le corpus comprend trente récits de scientifiques et de leurs épouses, de commerçants, diplomates, écrivains. La perception de la nature, la vision du progrès technique, le jugement sur les religions et sur la condition féminine constituent les axes de l’analyse. Ce travail interroge les processus de circulation des savoirs présents dans ces récits et la spécificité du récit de voyage féminin. La thèse prend en compte l’influence des facteurs tenant à la culture d’origine des voyageurs et à leur critique des valeurs européennes. Si les discours de certains voyageurs témoignent de l’importance des liens avec la population iranienne et de la remise en question de la suprématie du progrès à l’européenne, d’autres, en particulier les récits féminins, renvoient l’image d’une société allemande patriarcale que les voyageuses aspirent à fuir.

This thesis aims at analyzing the discourses on Iran in the narratives of German-speaking travelers between 1906 and 194. The body of literature is made of thirty narratives written by scientists and their spouses, businessmen, diplomats and writers. The analysis is structured along the perception of nature, the vision of technical progress, and the judgements of religions and women’s conditions. This research questions the means of circulation of knowledge in these stories and the specificity of the female travel story.The thesis takes into account the influence rooted in the travelers’ cultural background and their criticism of European values. If some travelers’ narratives demonstrate the importance of interaction with the local population and challenge the supremacy of European-like progress, others, and especially the women’s narratives, offer the image of a German patriarchal society the travelers sought to escape.

La Révolution Islamique de 1979 met fin à la monarchie constitutionnelle puis au ministère public en tentant de remédier aux difficultés récurrentes rencontrées par le système judiciaire depuis le début du siècle. Les institutions, furent complètement remaniées, dans l’intérêt du nouveau régime et afin de mettre en place, en rénovant le lien historique entre religions et institutions, une version politisée de l’Islam. Les révolutionnaires, insuffisamment préparés, manquant d’expérience et de connaissances, constatèrent l’échec des nouvelles politiques en matière judiciaire. Le ministère public était indispensable à l’exécution des missions régaliennes de maintien de la sécurité intérieure et de l’ordre public ainsi qu’au fonctionnement de la justice. Cette institution, présente sous des formes archaïques depuis l’antiquité et modernisée lors de la Révolution Constitutionnelle du début du XXème siècle, fut rétablie en 2002.

The Islamic Revolution of 1979 broke up the constitutional monarchy then disbanded the public prosecution institution to make an attempt to solve the chronic issues encountered by the judicial system since the beginning of the century. The institutional system was entirely overhauled, in the interest of the new system and in the purpose to establish a new model integrating the historical link between religion and institutions with a political kind of Islam. The revolutionaries, barely prepared, lacking of experience and knowledge, noticed the failure of the new judicial politics. The public prosecution was essential to the fulfillment of the regalian functions, including the maintenance of public order and domestic security, along with the functioning of justice. This institution, existing under varied shapes since antiquity and modernized in the beginning of the century with the constitutional Revolution, has been restored in 2002.

Les violences conjugales faites aux femmes demeurent l’un des plus grands scandales en matière d’usages, de coutumes et de droits humains. Ces travaux ont été réalisés en Iran, à Téhéran, en 2008, dans le cadre de centres médicaux, sur une population de femmes battues.Les hypothèses envisagent que les deux dimensions, tolérance et violence, sont associées de manière significative aux violences physiques, sexuelles, psychologiques et économiques, compte tenu de l'existence d'antécédents de violence dans la famille d’origine, du faible soutien social, du manque de soutien familial, de l' âge et du niveau socio-économique. Cette partie a permis d’établir une base conceptuelle pour organiser le matériel consulté et donner un sens aux résultats des recherches. Les résultats de notre recherche montrent :- Une relation significative et directe entre la violence, l’âge, la durée du couple, l’expérience de la maltraitance (antécédents familiaux), la pression ou l'influence familiale, le manque ou l’absence de soutien économique, l’inquiétude pour les enfants, l’habitude de la violence et la difficulté de vivre ;- une relation significative et inverse entre la violence et le niveau d’étude, l'absence de soutien social, l’attachement au mari et le comportement gênant de celui-ci ;- une absence de relation significative entre la violence et les variables suivantes : le niveau de salaire, la profession des femmes, le nombre d’enfants, le regard négatif porté par la société sur les femmes divorcées, le sentiment de culpabilité, l’espoir d’un changement d’attitude du mari et la mésestime de soi.- Autant de résultats, au moins pour ces derniers, qui ne laissent pas sans surprise

Violence towards a woman, within a married couple, is just unacceptable as regards ethics and Human Rights. This study about battered wives was carried out in various medical centers in Tehran, Iran, in 2008. Tolerance and violence are connected in a significant way with physical, sexual, psychological and economic violence and we have to take into account such elements as age, a history of violence in the family, a lack of social and family support and the social and economic background. We have thus set up a conceptual base to organize the collected information and to make sense with the conclusions of our research. These conclusions show:- A significant and direct link between violence, age, the number of years husband and wife have been living together, the history of violence in the family, the influence or the pressure of the family, the lack of economic support, the concern for the children, the habit of violence and the difficulty to live.- A significant and reverse link between violence and the level of ability, the lack of social support, the attachment to the husband and the husband’s wrong behavior.- No significant link between violence and the following variants : the level of income, the woman’s job, the number of children, the lack of social consideration for a divorced woman, the feeling of guilt, the hope for a change in the husband’s…

L’art du naqqâli en Iran est basé sur une longue tradition de récits épiques portant sur des héros de la légende nationale iranienne. La principale source de ces épopées, Le Livre des rois de Ferdowsi, est un œuvre fondamentale de la culture nationale. Les conteurs professionnels «naqqâl» récitent, en les adaptant, les passages du Livre des rois pendant des heures à l’assistance dans certaines maisons de thé, plus connues sous l'appellation de cafés traditionnels. La représentation du naqqâli qui dure approximativement une heure et demi comporte trois parties d’environ une demi-heure chacune. Une session habituelle commence par une introduction poétique suivie d’une entrée en matière pour introduire l’histoire et s’achève par l’histoire proprement dite. Le début et la fin de chaque partie sont marqués par une combinaison de salavât (prière récitée en chœur) et de récitations de poèmes classiques qui ne sont pas nécessairement liés à l’histoire elle-même, mais servent en général à retenir l’attention du public pendant la représentation. Les qualités de la récitation du naqqâl reposent sur un ensemble de méthodes complémentaires permettant de donner plus de relief au spectacle : les méthodes oratoires, gestuelles et l’approche musicale. Les naqqâl utilisent les rouleaux de parchemin appelés tumâr pour préparer la représentation et s’aider pendant la récitation tout en prenant des libertés par rapport au texte dans le but de retenir l’attention de leur auditoire. Les caractéristiques formelles spécifiques de ce genre de représentation qui se rapporte à ses contraintes minimales sont : la durée fixe d’une représentation et son découpage sérialisé, l’influence plus ou moins directe de la structure du tumâr et en particulier sa division en trois niveaux d’unités structurelles : le chapitre, la partie et l’épisode.

The art of naqqâli in Iran is based on a long tradition of epics involving heroes of the Iranian National legend. The main source of these epics, Ferdowsi’s Book of the Kings, is a cornerstone of the national culture. Over long hours, professional naqqâl recite passages from the Book of the Kings to the audience in tea-houses, known as traditional cafes. The naqqâli performance lasts about one and half hours and up to three parts for about half an hour each. A session usually begins with an introduction followed by a poetic prelude to outline the story and ends with the story itself. The beginning and end of each part are salavât (prayer recited in unison) and recitations of classic poems which are not necessarily related to the history itself, but in general serve the purpose of gaining the public attention during the performance. The quality of the naqqâl’s recitation based on a set of methods to give a larger dimension to the show such as: oratory techniques, gesture and musical approach. Naqqâl use parchment scroll called tumâr prepared for the performance which help with the recitation while taking liberties with respect to the text in order to attract the attention of their audience.
