▼ In these essays, I examine quantitatively some of the classic questions in the field of International Economics: What is the impact of international trade on consumption and productivity? How does international trade affect income inequality? How do exchange rates movements affect real output and productivity? This dissertation is composed of three chapters, each covering one of these topics. The first chapter, based on my paper "Measured Gains from International Trade" with Ariel Burstein, revisits the measurement of welfare gains from trade liberalizations. Economists so far have measured these gains using one of two alternative approaches. A first approach uses structural models to infer unobservable welfare gains from changes in trade costs or in trade patterns. A second approach documents the empirical link between the level or the change in international trade and aggregate indicators of economic activity. This chapter connects these two approaches by studying the relationship between the theoretical welfare gains from trade and observable aggregate measures of economic activity, such as real GDP and real consumption, as constructed by national statistical agencies. Across a wide range of models, we find that measured real GDP and productivity rise in response to reductions in variable trade costs if GDP deflators capture the decline in trade costs. On the other hand, welfare gains from tariffs reductions are only reflected on real GDP if tariff revenues at constant prices rise. The second chapter analyzes the impact of capital equipment imports on income inequality across 53 countries. The chapter is based on my paper "Importing Skill Biased Technology" with Ariel Burstein and Jonathan Vogel. Capital equipment, such as computers and industrial machinery, is mostly operated by skilled workers and generally takes on routine tasks that are otherwise performed by unskilled workers. When a country imports capital equipment, it raises the relative demand of skilled versus unskilled workers, increasing income inequality. The chapter develops a tractable model of international trade in capital goods to quantify these effects. In doing so, it provides sufficient statistics and transparent formulas that will enable development practitioners to independently assess how trade in capital goods affects income inequality. We estimate that imports of equipment account for 16 percent of the income gap between skilled and unskilled workers in the median country in our sample, and for a much larger magnitude in economies that heavily rely on imported capital equipment. We also show that imports of capital equipment are essential to increase productivity and income in developing countries, both for skilled and unskilled workers, although my findings suggest these imports will disproportionately benefit the skilled segment of the population. In the third chapter, "Exchange Rates, Aggregate Productivity and the Currency of Invoicing of International Trade", I use a novel dataset on prices and quantities from Chilean customs and a…

▼ This world is devoted to a general survey of the legal and political aspects of the organisation of African Unity as it operates today. An attempt has been made to briefly trace the history of the O.A.U. and how it has attemted to solve disputes among its member states.
The work has however, suffered from lack of a sufficient number of original sources. The Zambian Industries
of Legal and foreign Affairs from whore it v;as originally
planned to obtain original documents, refused to give any
information, The African desk stated that as a matter of
policy, they were not allowed to disclose any information to
researchers because these materials were State secrets.
The little original materials were only obtained from the United Nation Information Centre, In the alternative, secondary' sources have been largely relied upon, and this dictated both the descriptive and analytical form taken by the paper.
It has been the author's intention to combine the legal and political aspects of the O.A.U, in order to make general conclusion about certain aspects of the O.A.U. today, Chapter I of the paper deals with the historical background to the founding of the O.A.U,Chapter II examines the organs and principles of the O.A.U, and their implications.
Chapter III examines a selected number of disputes which have confronted the O.A.U. and the attempts the organization has made to resolve then. The relationship between the O.A.U TI, and the International Court of Justice is discussed in Chapter TV,The factors that undermine the Unity of African states are further examined in Chapter V.A review of the Charter of the O.A.U has been suggested in Chapter VI, followed by a summary of the discussion in Chapter III.It is hoped that students of both law and political science will find this study useful in understanding the politics of the O.A.U. as a regional, organization.

▼ This thesis explores the law of state responsibility in international law from a critical standpoint. The main argument is that there are no longer justifications for holding state responsibility as the foremost responsibility system in international law. The importance of state responsibility has diminished; state responsibility has moved from a paradigm to the periphery in the international legal order. The thesis advances on two fronts to prove the veracity of the argument. First, it evaluates the law of state responsibility as adopted in the International Law Commission s 2001 Articles on State Responsibility in order to pinpoint problems in the general state responsibility rules. Second, the thesis explores how alternative constructions of responsibility, that is international liability and international criminal law, have overtaken portions of the state responsibility domain.
Functionality is presented as the most suitable appraisal framework for an analysis of how state responsibility rules respond to challenges such as globalization and its actors, the diversity of responsibility ideas, and the normative fragmentation of responsibility in international law. The thesis thus prioritizes the practical usefulness of a responsibility regime in international law rather than abstract system-building functions. The exploration into the functionality of rules for state responsibility is preceded by an excursion into the evolution of state responsibility. The historical outlook will reveal how the rules developed, what dilemmas have characterized the state responsibility project and how these tensions have affected the formation of the ILC state responsibility rules.
The critical appraisal of the general rules of state responsibility addresses a range of problems that relate to legal pluralization, form, function and implementation. It is argued that the state responsibility rules are unable to respond to the multi-actor and multi-issue world, to norm differentiation, and to the diversity of function, all of which contributes to the marginalization of the law of state responsibility. The thesis contends that the decision to create one all-embracing responsibility system for all kinds of violations of international law in order to build a credible international legal order actually led to lessened functionality. Real-world problems of crucial importance to the international community cannot be effectively handled under the state responsibility regime.
From the demerits of state responsibility, the thesis proceeds to explore particularized responsibility regimes that have developed and strengthened as alternatives to state responsibility. International liability and international criminal law rules are explored from specific points of functionality that state responsibility is ill-suited to handle, i.e. social control, collectivity and the signalling effect. It is submitted that their particularity is an asset that allows regimes to deal with real problems in flexible and creative ways. They have thus effectively…

▼ This study focuses on aspects of change in German strategic culture, i.e. on the changes in ways of thinking about and pursuing security and defence policy and the views on the questions of peace, war and the use of military force, in particular after the end of the Cold War. The overarching aim of the study is to provide a novel reading on German strategic culture, and this has been done by shifting the focus of research on strategic culture from the study of continuity to the study of change. This enables us to tell better stories about strategic cultures both in terms of how internal and external challenges leading to questions about the continuity of strategic cultural patterns and how strategic culture is shaped by the social and political reality of the strategic actors.
The first main contribution of the study is to question the mantra of continuity that has been the primary object of study in the existing strategic culture research. This mantra has ultimately led to a rather stale and static state of affairs in terms of the contributions that strategic culture research is able to make in the field of International Relations. Instead, the study argues for a research agenda that identifies the nature, mechanisms and outcomes of strategic cultural change. The study achieves this by critically assessing the existing accounts of strategic cultural change and creating an analytical framework that stresses both the processes and outcomes of strategic cultural change. This framework is informed by critical realist metatheory since it enables us to move ahead of the epistemological impasse of the existing studies by focusing on the ontological aspects of strategic culture. This framework identifies the experience of warfare as the primary mechanism of change in strategic cultures.
The second key contribution of the study is to apply this analytical framework in the study of German strategic culture. The empirical case studies cover the German strategic cultural track record since the end of World War II, with a clear focus on the developments after the end of the Cold War. These case studies show, firstly, how shifts within the normative structure of German strategic culture have shaped German views on the use of military force, and, subsequently, how they led to shifts and changes in German strategic practices. Secondly, the case studies underline the role of external shocks (e.g. the massacre at Srebrenica) in triggering change within German strategic culture. Thirdly, the case studies also provide a basis for a critique of some of the more widely accepted claims regarding German security and defence policy, such as the notion of normalisation or Sonderweg (special path). Finally, the analysis also suggests that counterfactual argumentation can be a useful analytical tool in assessing the importance of some of these developments in the evolution of German strategic culture.
The third primary contribution of the study is a critical assessment of the process of coming to terms with the German past and…

▼ State responsibility is the doctrine that regulates international enforcement actions. Among international lawyers, there is a shared sense of mystery about State responsibility. While the doctrine clearly guarantees the enforceability of international law, its practice consistently languishes from a lack of international policemen. History is one lens through which to view this paradox. In this study, I describe the three most influential efforts to establish a legal standard for international enforcement actions: U.S. diplomatic practice, German legal theory and U.N. codification. In the late nineteenth century, lawyers in the U.S. State Department turned to international tribunals to redress alien injuries. These lawyers relied on international law to justify their legal intervention. Latin Americans, who were frequently the respondents of such claims, disputed the relevance of international law to its treatment of aliens; to them, alien protection was essentially a domestic affair. However, by the twentieth century, a U.S. practice of arbitration had established that States could be held responsible for breaching their international duties to protect aliens. The resulting awards were professional but haphazard. States were ordered to pay reparations for alien injuries, but why and how much they had to pay remained largely unarticulated. The first systematic treatment of State responsibility surfaced in late-nineteenth century Germany. These early writings were extrapolations from domestic principles of law rather than inductions of international awards. German lawyers viewed the U.S. practice of international arbitration as ad hoc settlements of private disputes rather than as the adjudication of public disputes. Thus, the German approach to State responsibility was not restricted to the field of alien protection in particular; it provide for the preconditions of international liability in general. When the U.N. undertook to codify the field, it chose to base its efforts on German theory rather than on the U.S. practice. This strategy divided State responsibility into general and specific parts. Generally, enforcement actions were subject to the U.N. doctrine. Exceptionally, a specific practice (e.g., alien protection) was permitted to continue as lex specialis. Contrary to many commentators, I see no crisis in this result. No singular doctrine has ever encapsulated the practice of international enforcement. Since the 1870s, international lawyers have employed State responsibility as a pliable concept to suit particular ends. By providing these perspectives, I hope to illustrate how three groups of lawyers practitioners, theorists and doctrinalists have been able to cope with the enduring mystery of State responsibility.
State responsibility is the doctrine that regulates international enforcement actions. Among international lawyers, there is a shared sense of mystery about State responsibility. While the doctrine clearly guarantees the enforceability of international law, its practice consistently…

▼ This dissertation analyses specific privacy problems arising from the surveillance of public spaces. It studies the scope and limitations of the human right to privacy and a right to personal data protection in light of advanced surveillance and security technologies. The main research question therefore asks how the existing European fundamental rights to privacy and data protection address increasing surveillance and the unprecedented surveillance capabilities of public spaces in Europe.
This study is divided into two main parts. After introducing the research problem and a descriptive discussion of existing and future surveillance technologies, the first part discusses the theoretical conceptions behind this research, namely the concept of public space, privacy, data protection and security. Part two of this study then discusses four more specific issues in relation to public space surveillance: Individually targeted surveillance, mass surveillance, surveillance done by private actors, automation of surveillance, and incident prediction.
In order to address the research question, this study analyses existing legislation, jurisprudence and specific cases. The overall framework for analyses is derived from a fictional urban surveillance scenario, representing a large European city. This surveillance scenario serves as an anchor point to identify central problems and issues for further fundamental rights based analyses. In that sense, this study uses legal and critical analyses of a specific scenario in order to identify existing, but also potential future legal problems arising from sophisticated public space surveillance.
This study consequently identifies several ways to address public space surveillance from a European fundamental rights perspective. The analyses of a right to privacy and a right to personal data protection show that the European system of fundamental rights protection is very well capable of addressing legal problems arising from public surveillance. However, there is a lack of available case law dealing with complex technological surveillance in Europe. This study therefore distils two main approaches for addressing public surveillance: The first approach is based on individual freedom, relying on the legitimate expectations of legal subjects, the second, which is derived from human dignity and personality rights, challenges the communal effects of surveillance. Each approach comes with a fundamentally opposite take on public surveillance. Furthermore, this study shows, how data protection functions as a gap-filler between the two approaches. In its conclusion, this study therefore illustrates several ways to address public space surveillance, and it shows that there is a series of legal problems arising from sophisticated technological surveillance, which require a reformulation of legal arguments addressing public place surveillance.

▼ NATO’s military intervention in response to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia’s violation of human rights was illegal because it neither received the blessing of the Security Council nor was it justified under the rules of self-defense. This interdisciplinary research employs a rational choice approach to international law in order to understand the limits as well as the effects of international law during the Kosovo War in 1999. International law lacked any intrinsic importance within the utilitarian calculus of political decision-making during NATO’s intervention in 1999. After explaining a rational choice theory approach, this dissertation proceeds in the second chapter in order to outline the theoretical argument of jus ad bellum rules embodied in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter. In this chapter, I introduce three ways of thinking about compliance with the use of force in international law that will help us better understand why nations did not conform to the use of force rules embodied in the UN Charter. The third chapter presents and criticizes the threats of force. International lawyers and the International Court of Justice have concluded that a threat of force is illegal if the use of force followed by a threat did not receive Security Council authorization nor was it justified under self-defense. In contrast to these arguments, by using the logic of strategic literature and game theory, this chapter proposes that threats of force are sui generis and should be treated separately from the use of force rules. Moreover, this chapter shows that military threats can be powerful instruments of coercion and can serve a useful purpose in the crises because they may mitigate the risk of war. Therefore, credible and capable threats should be permitted under international law since they can reduce the likelihood that the confrontation will end in war and therefore, the purpose of the U.N. Charter “to maintain peace and security” can be achieved. The fourth chapter analyzes customary international law and it has developed two major claims. First, I argue that only the objective element, a state practice, should be considered relevant for establishing customary international law and opinio juris should not be regarded as a necessary requirement because it is a costless signal. Hence, by using logic of the “cheap talk” and signaling games, I suggest that the International Court of Justice should take into consideration only physical acts as a constitutive element of customary international law. My second argument is related to the compliance with customary international law. While international lawyers who use rational choice theory believe that customary international law refers to patterns of cooperative behavior since it requires widespread repetition of similar international acts over time by states and therefore states may build a negative reputation for non-compliance, this chapter argues that the “shadow of future” doctrine cannot be applied to peremptory norms, such as the prohibition of aggressive…

International trade can affect both components of regional productivity. First, trade openness in a closed economy may alter its internal economic geography. Some regions which become more attractive to firms than before gain an advantage over others from integration into global markets. Second, as a competition pressure, trade liberalization forces the least productive firms to exit, resulting in the growth of aggregate productivity in the industry.
The three essays presented in this dissertation explore the relationship between
international trade and regional productivity in the presence of heterogeneous firms. In the first essay, a theoretical framework is introduced in order to describe how the above two channels, through which trade affects regional productivity, shape a country's spatial distribution of productivity. Results show that industries, each having its own cost-minimizing location, can be spatially relocated within a country via heterogeneous trade liberalization across industries. Moreover, trade intensifies localization for each industry since most firms in an industry move to or gather around their industry-specific cost-
minimizing location. The consequent clustering of firms generates additional localization economies. More importantly, the intensification of localization economies can slow or delay the selection process, i.e. exit of low productivity firms, following trade liberalization. These findings suggest that trade openness induces significant industrial and spatial dynamics (entry, exit and survival) within an economy.
The second and third essays are empirical tests on the second channel through which trade openness affects regional productivity using county-level data from Korea and firm-level data from India, respectively. In addition to trade liberalization, regional infrastructure is considered to be another competition pressure for domestic firms, i.e. improved infrastructure in a region induces a similar selection process among firms. These empirical essays investigate the effect of falling trade costs and improving domestic infrastructure on the regional variation of raw productivity using a common methodology. That is, a spatial econometric procedure is applied to a production function framework to estimate total factor productivity (TFP) by region and industry, while controlling for potential external and spatial effects. The mean and alternative percentiles of the regional raw productivity distribution are then specified as functions of
international and domestic competition indicators.
International competition is represented by trade costs, which are estimated as frictions in a gravity-type trade model, while road density is considered to capture the level of a region's infrastructure. In both Korea and India, it is found that…

▼ This thesis addresses the broad research problem “How do entrepreneurs identify business opportunities internationally?” The study conceptualised a theoretical framework for explaining the
international opportunity identification (IOI) behaviour of entrepreneurs and explored this behaviour empirically in the Australian context. This study has advanced the existing body of knowledge in
international entrepreneurship. This is a relatively new field of study that emerged in the mid 1990’s in response to the appearance of new patterns in the internationalisation behaviour of entrepreneurial new ventures and the growing importance to the survival, growth and sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises of integration into
international markets. The literature acknowledges the defining role of an individual entrepreneur in the overall strategic direction and internationalisation efforts of these enterprises (e.g., Andersson, 2000; Madsen & Servais, 1997). However, little is known about the behaviour of individual entrepreneurs that leads to internationalisation of a firm. The mainstream entrepreneurship literature advocates that it is the ability to identify business opportunities that distinguishes entrepreneurs from non-entrepreneurs (Shane & Venkataraman, 2000). By extension, it is the ability to identify
international business opportunities that distinguishes entrepreneurs who venture their businesses across national borders. Despite the centrality of the opportunity theme to
international entrepreneurship research (Oviatt & McDougall, 2005a), this phenomenon is still under-researched and requires theory-building. To address this gap, the current study adopted a multidisciplinary perspective, an approach recommended by scholars that uses existing theories from more mature disciplines in order to advance a relatively new field of academic inquiry (Buckley, 2002; Jones & Coviello, 2005; Ireland & Webb, 2007; Zahra et al. 2005). The study is grounded in the theory of planned behaviour (Ajzen, 1991) and social cognitive theory (Bandura, 1997). It also leverages mainstream entrepreneurship research on opportunity identification,
international business studies of personal variables relevant to the process of internationalisation of a firm and cross-cultural psychology studies of individual responses to cultural differences. The literature review identified a number of gaps in our understanding of how individual entrepreneurs identify
international opportunities. To address these gaps, five research questions were formulated for this thesis. The limited understanding of IOI in the extant literature required an exploratory in-depth investigation. Therefore, the study adopted a qualitative research method and a case study technique. The research is based on seven case studies of Australian entrepreneurs. In contributing to the theory of
international entrepreneurship, this study has improved our understanding of the process of IOI; established the role of cognitive properties, cognitive activities, networking capability…

▼ The study sought to determine the degree of importance of social needs of international students and the effectiveness in terms of the fulfillment of the services designed to meet their social needs as reported by the students and the members of the International Task Force at a university in South Texas. The study was quantitative with a qualitative component that was used to obtain the perspectives of international students and the International Task Force related to the levels of importance and fulfillment in the quantitative component.
Quantitative data analysis demonstrated that both groups rated the importance of needs higher than the degree to which they were fulfilled. The students rated the majority of the social needs items at a higher level of importance and fulfillment than did the International Task Force. There was not a statistically significant difference between the two groups on importance, but there was a statistically significant difference on the levels of fulfillment. Data analysis of the international student focus group and the International Task Force focus groups yielded two themes: navigational barriers of informal structure of social needs in academia and navigational barriers of formal structure of social needs in academia.

▼ This dissertation focuses on the role of non-state actors in international lawmaking and institutions. People increasingly participate in international governance through a range of organizations and institutions yet their access remains contested and tentative; often described as an accommodation but not a right. Citizens may be sovereign at home, but they lack standing at international law. I examined multiple cases where participation has become part of the machinery of international lawmaking - from regional agreements in Europe and the Americas to global accords addressing climate change. Each case shows the assertion of popular will within a governance framework constructed and managed by states. My findings thus reveal a paradigm of state architects and executors that accommodates non-state actors as collaborators and animators. This paradigm challenges the idea that state sovereignty is absolute and impervious without rejecting state dominion outright. Within a broader scholarly discourse that often presents a binary choice - either states are sovereign (leaving people with no real place in international lawmaking) or people are sovereign (leaving the international system assailable for its conspicuous democracy deficit) - my findings suggest a hybrid approach that reinforces the authority of states while making meaningful space for non-state actors. International governance thus gains some of the value of democratic, participatory models in a way that enhances rather than disrupts the existing international legal system.

Why Surrender Sovereignty? Empowering Non-State Actors to Protect the Status Quo.

▼ Why do states create new judicial tools that severely limit or altogether undermine their sovereignty? Why do some states choose, moreover, to become leading innovators, adopting these new types of enforcement mechanisms significantly earlier than their peers? This dissertation focuses on the creation of investor-state arbitration provisions in Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) and the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC), especially its independent prosecutor provision. For all their differences, investor-state arbitration provisions and the ICC share three institutional features that, in combination, pose unprecedented constraints on state sovereignty: they are judicial, they entail compulsory jurisdiction, and they grant non-state actors - private investors or an independent prosecutor - the authority to initiate legal proceedings against states and state officials.
The introduction of transnational and supranational judicial mechanisms is a strategy of the strong, not the weak. Contingent on the mobilization of transnational advocacy networks, powerful states turn to sovereignty-constraining tools in response to two core features: an international legal crisis and a relatively empty international judicial landscape. In the aftermath of legal crisis, the creation of sovereignty-constraining tools helps powerful states both to increase the efficacy of legal rules that have been challenged and to validate the authority of legal rules that have been undermined. This argument is counter-intuitive: powerful states turn to costly new judicial mechanisms not to transform but to protect the status quo. To advance this claim I examine both failed and successful attempts at creating novel judicial mechanisms in investment and international criminal law across the twentieth century. I use qualitative and historical analysis at the global level and statistical cross-national analysis at the state level.
In the case of BITs, developing countries in the 1970s expropriated foreign property on a large scale and challenged traditional investment rules in the United Nations, thus triggering a crisis for the investment regime. In response, powerful states turned to investor-state arbitration provisions, not simply the BITs themselves, as a strategy to protect the existing regime. In the case of the ICC, Nazi Germany's territorial aggression and the 1990s mass atrocities in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda prompted legal crises for the territorial integrity principle and the human rights regime respectively. Seeking to bolster territoriality and human rights, powerful states experimented with the establishment of a criminal court. They failed in the 1950s and succeeded in the 1990s.
Transnational Advocacy Networks (TANs) were of critical importance. Their interactions with states were reciprocal and strategic. TANs invented and promoted the two forms of judicial mechanisms at the global level, thus influencing state receptivity; they also molded their strategies and substantive goals to suit…

▼ My dissertation consists of three papers on international finance, international economics, and labor economics. The first paper develops a stochastic general equilibrium model to understand the effects of default risk on output, consumption, investment, and current account deficits in emerging markets. The second paper studies how market structure affects exchange-rate pass-through. This analysis is empirical as well as theoretical, using a partial equilibrium model. The third paper develops a model to study relative wages across different educational levels in developed countries.
The model in my first paper features endogenous default risk. Its calibration results explain a number of important stylized facts about emerging economies, including the negative correlation between investment and net exports, the procyclicality of investment, and the potential for current account reversals.
The second paper compares exchange-rate pass-through under perfect competition and oligopoly, showing that the two different market structures have opposite effects on this currency pricing behavior. The paper's empirical test, whether implemented on the basis of a partial equilibrium framework or on the model's general equilibrium framework, finds support for perfect competition.
The third paper uses differences within and across industries m education wage premiums to study factors affecting those premiums. The paper begins by showing that within-industry as opposed to cross-industry educational wage premiums explain most of developed country differences in wages by education. It then develops a theoretical model and an empirical testing strategy, using U.S. and Japanese data, to examine whether the use of IT capital and the decision to outsource affect the education-wage premium. The answer is mixed depending on the country in question.

▼ This thesis is concerned with varying rates (i.e. speeds) of system dissolution in the international monetary domain. International monetary systems, such as the gold-dollar system and inter-war order, often suddenly and unexpectedly collapse. Yet other monetary orders, such as the Sterling Area and the long-forgotten Latin Monetary Union, for no less obscure reasons, have declined gradually. The puzzle is why. I begin by taking seriously the initial conditions that give rise to international monetary systems, for those historical conditions shape the modalities of leadership and political conflicts that drive systems towards particular kinds of ends. In this context, I draw on the classical distinction between spontaneous and negotiated orders. Whereas spontaneous orders emerge around natural processes of trade and financial integration, without any conscious act of creation, negotiated orders emerge through deliberate and directed action. The study breaks with traditional understandings, however, in arguing that the most important legacy of these historical processes is not that spontaneous orders are decentralised while negotiated ones are hierarchical. In fact, all international monetary systems exhibit a strongly hierarchical character. Instead, I highlight, on the one hand, the centrality of collective institutionalised bargaining between integrated national monetary agencies (i.e., treasuries and central bank officials) in negotiated systems and, on the other, the absence of collective institutional bargaining in more atomised spontaneous systems. This structural distinction is the key legacy of the different historical processes of negotiated and spontaneous system formation. Contrary to conventional wisdom and intuition, I argue that spontaneous systems - plagued by non-association and lacking ready mechanisms of directed adjustment - establish the conditions for slow decline, while negotiated systems - geared to withstand economic and social change through institutionalised collective bargaining and concerted adjustment - establish the conditions for rapid collapse. My framework treats the ultimate unit of analysis as the policy choices made by leaders confronting problems. Specifically, the analysis logically deduces two distinct modalities of leadership that emerge as structural variables interact with political conflicts over preferred policy solutions. I label these modes of action appropriative and exclusory leadership. Appropriative leadership involves coopting administrative resources by negotiating with members of monetary institutions to meet problems. Exclusory leadership is geared towards retaining the non-trivial advantages that flow from not having to bargain over the terms of continuation. Under both modalities, leaders exploit their strategic position, distorting information and manipulating costs and benefits to promote their particular interests and goals. Both modalities involve tensions between leadership and membership interests and challenges to systems optimisation. But appropriative…

▼ Relations among China, the United States, and Japan constitute some of the most complicated and dynamic relations in the contemporary era. Since the end of the second half of the twentieth century, all three nations, which were not in favor of regional multilateralism, have changed their strategy and have actively engaged in regional Asia-Pacific institutions. This research attempts to integrate realist discourse on the balance of power and liberal analysis of institutions to look at the China–U.S.–Japan interactions within regional institutions. This study explores why China, the United States, and Japan have increased their cooperative interaction in regional institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, despite having divergent interests and different visions of the future regional power structure.
By searching and analyzing archives documenting China–U.S.–Japan regional policies and policies directed at regional institutions and observing in detail China– U.S.–Japan interactions within Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), this dissertation argues that institutional balancing provides a framework that helps identify countries’ overlooked intention to check and balance targeted powers in regional institutions. Regional institutions not only provide an opportunity for participant countries to discover and address common interests but also provide an opportunity for participant countries to lobby for their own interests and to balance the gains and influences of the other powers. This dissertation explores conditions under which institutional balancing is an optimal choice for countries and notes key methods: controlling membership; shaping institutional norms, rules, and mechanisms; and pursuing balanced alliances that have been practiced by China, the United States, and Japan in regional institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

▼ The vote to leave the European Union by the United Kingdom was a shocking political event. Pollsters had predicted a slight edge for the Remain camp right up to the day of the referendum. After the votes had been counted it was discovered that a region that had historically backed the Labour Party, a strong supporter of Remain, had voted Leave. This region, the Midlands, had seen changing demographics due to migration within and outside of the EU. Consequently, the imagery of the 2015 Migrant Crisis that was published in the British media helped to increase anxieties over migration in this region. These media sources differed in their initial focus of the images of the early part of the crisis. This changed as the crisis continued and the migrants began to travel across multiple European borders. The tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail and The Guardian, a paper of record, are examples of this convergence that helped to exacerbate the immigration anxieties of the voters in the Midlands. This thesis will explain how the presentation of these images led to this region supporting the UKIP position of leaving the European Union.

▼ The present dissertation studies why South American states have fought so few wars among one another since their independence in the early 1800s, and why those wars in which they did enter were limited in intensity, casualty rates, number of battles, and overall duration. It offers an extensive review of the literature on South America’s “long peace” and advances two critiques. First, that the existing studies have usually followed either a narrow quantitative definition of war, or a broad qualitative definition of peace. And second, that the literature tends to neglect the relevance of the 19th century in the historical formation underpinning South America’s “long peace.” In this context, and drawing from the
International Society perspective, the dissertation argues that between the mid-1860s and the late 1930s, the region developed from a mere
system to a
society of states through the consolidation of three key factors: first, a common interest in restraining, or “taming,” war in the region; second, the progressive institutionalization of regional order and cooperation; and third, the emergence of a “pragmatic solidarity” among South American neighbors when facing common threats as a region. Drawing from a large pool of primary and secondary sources collected in eight South American countries, the dissertation offers a process-tracing analysis of these three causal-mechanisms across four historical case-studies: the Guano War (1864–1871), the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), the War of the Pacific (1879–1884); and the Chaco War (1932–1935). For each case, six alternative hypotheses are tested in detail against both the historical record and the leading hypothesis.

▼ This dissertation examines a type of variance in state behavior pertaining to
international conflict and cooperation. Rather than confining this discussion to a binary understanding of state behavior, between revisionism and status-quo seeking, it endeavors to provide a nuanced discussion of the type of grand-strategic orientations states undertake in pursuit of their interests. It poses the question, “under what circumstances do states aspire to uphold, seek to reform, or challenge
international order?” In doing so, the study helps to understanding the gamut of behaviors that purportedly satisfied or revisionist states display.
System-level material opportunities that are filtered by elite-preferences and beliefs about
international order at the unit-level account for the type of grand strategies states will adopt. Through congruency testing, the dissertation identifies and explains order-conforming, order-reforming, order-retrenching, and order-challenging grand strategies. In this context, the dissertation addresses debates within Structural Realism on status-quo and revisionist states as well as grand strategy formation to produce an eclectic mid-range theory of state behavior. The hypotheses generated by this theoretical undertaking are tested through longitudinal, comparative case study examinations of U.S. and Chinese grand strategies in the post-Cold War period.

▼ "This thesis is an exploration of two questions that are neither novel nor lacking in exploration: Is an International Environmental Court (IEC) needed? Is such a court feasible? Proposals for an IEC have a rich history, are well founded and numerous. On the issue of necessity, this thesis attempts to pull together historical and current information on two distinct areas of international environmental law and use these analyses to contextualize the need for an international environmental tribunal. Arguments for and against an IEC are presented within a discussion of environmental diplomacy. This thesis begins with a legal discussion of potential climate change actions in current international fora. This section is an attempt to add a layer of context on what the international legal landscape looks like for environmental actions while presenting one of two broad areas of environmental redress: a civil action. The analysis then moves on to discuss an international cause of action debated and advocated for over the past half century: ecocide. The need for a singular cause of action to fit the particularities of intentional environmental harm inflicted upon peoples is used to present the second broad area of environmental redress necessitated by international affairs: a criminal action. The analysis then moves from necessity to feasibility, beginning with an overview of proposals for an international agreement to create an environmental tribunal adequate to address the needs presented in the preceding sections. This analysis draws on international relations theory in its conclusion that such a tribunal is necessary and potential, dependent on legally cognizable factors working in tandem with considerable advocacy. The belief that the potentially catastrophic human ability to affect the global environment has existed at least since the reality of nuclear holocaust threatened during the Cold War, is currently at issue in relation to climate change, and is likely to be an ongoing reality in a quickly developing, technologically hyper-driven, globally interconnected, resource-scarce future underpins this analysis. The need to have international legal mechanisms to protect those at the fringes of these processes who are often the most harmed by environmental degradation lends urgency to the project of investigating the feasibility of creating an IEC tasked with ruling on agreed international environmental norms and rights."

▼ "Within the past decade people around the world have become progressively more aware and interested in the new uses of digital technologies in movements for political change. The technologies have given more people and groups access to information and the tools needed to increase productivity and communication than in the past. As a result of these new digital technologies, the number of people contributing to their civil societies has radically increased. My thesis questions: What is the value of digital activism in the process of democratization around the world? How did those that succeed successfully use these new technologies as opposed to the several others that have failed? Are the successful practices replicable in other scenarios with a similar context? In studying, analyzing, and evaluating digital activism, I attempt to determine how citizens can use digital technologies more efficiently in order to exercise their political power in a more effective manner."

▼ Freireian Approach to International Peacebuilding and Development:
An in Depth Case Study
ABSTRACT
Paulo Freire, in his seminal work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, counters the antidiological and destructive tendencies of the elite with concepts focused on humanist action.
With a Freireian approach to International Peacebuilding and Development, engagement and dialogue at a grassroots level has the potential to create an environment of empowerment for individuals and communities, ultimately leading to positive change and increased equality. By implemented Freireian concepts and models, practitioners have the opportunity to combat what Freire calls ?false generosity?. The integration of Freireian ideals would not only give a voice to the targeted population or region, but it would also combat the North-South divide mentality that is ingrained in the interactions of stakeholders at all levels. Whether applied to a macro scale, such as a government and its people or a micro scale, like the concept of peace education and the democratic relationship between teachers and students, a Freireian lens allows the struggle toward personhood and liberation to be framed in critical thought, praxeological dialogue, and conscientization. The setting from which creativity, liberty, and positive peace are realized is fed by these principals and helps overcome antidiolagical action intended to snuff out the solidarity of a united group of revolutionaries.
Teachers stand on a unique platform to engage with youth in the developing world through classroom experiences, and praxeological learning opportunities. Teacher training programs based in the United States uphold a unique interaction through development efforts in the education sector worldwide. While some enable an antidiological approach to international interactions, others have encouraged positive and constructive training and implementation to help combat false generosity. Through responsible and sustainable projects, practitioners have the opportunity to stand in solidarity, creating an environment where awareness is raised, change is possible and positive peace can not only develop, but also flourish among the ?radical? dialogue of those fighting for a more equal and less exploitive world.
Through an in depth case study of a Freireian framed teacher training program implemented in Haiti, the practices, attitudes, and outcomes of practitioners and stakeholders will be analyzed and evaluated, ultimately shedding light on the effects of a Freireian approach to development.

▼ The shortest summary of the thesis is in its title “Vitamin G”, where the G stands for the green space around us and Vitamin stands for the possible positive relationship between green space and people’s health. In the first part of this thesis we investigate whether green space in people’s living environment is positively related to their health. We found that green space is related to perceived general health as well as to morbidity. People with more green space in their living environment feel healthier and less often visit the General Practitioner with complaints like depression, diabetes and COPD. In the second part of this thesis we investigate whether the relation between green space and health can be explained by mechanisms related to exposure and behaviour. Concerning exposure, we examined, the extent to which the presence of green space close to and further away from the home can buffer the adverse impact of stressful life events on self-reported general, mental and physical health. The results indicate that green space within the wider living environment acts as a buffer against the adverse impact of stressful life events on self-reported physical health. Regarding behaviour, we investigated whether physical activity and social contacts are possible mechanisms behind the relation between green space and health. However, physical activity does not seem to be a mechanism behind the relation between green space and health. People with more green space in their living environment did not more or less often meet the Dutch public health recommendations for physical activity. Social contacts, on the other hand, partly and in some cases even completely mediated the relation between green space and health. People with more green space in their living environment feel less lonely and less often experience a shortage of social support. In the third part of the thesis, we investigated the relationship between the amount of green space in the living environment and feelings of social safety. The results suggest that the amount of green space in people’s living environment is generally positively associated with enhanced feelings of social safety. Only in very strongly urban areas the amount of green space in the living environment was found to be negatively associated with feelings of social safety. In the last part of the thesis we investigated whether the health benefits of green space are used in health care settings. More specifically, we investigated the extent to which general practitioners advise patients on physical activity and whether they refer to the additional health benefits of physical activity in a natural environment. Although advice on physical activity was given by general practitioners during 26% of all consultations, the additional benefits of physical activity in natural environments were not mentioned by GPs during any of the consultations. This part of the thesis shows that there are opportunities to increase the use of green space in the health care sector.

▼ In eukaryotes, transcription factor (TF)-based network is a widely used mechanism to regulate fundamental developmental processes. Both animals and plants utilize three-amino-acid-loop-extension (TALE) homeodomain (HD) transcription factors to subdivide their body plan. In animals, MEIS/PBC TF heterodimers are involved in the specification of the anterior-posterior axis of animals, whereas in plants their KNOX/BELL orthologs play an important role in plant architecture in general, and more specifically, in shoot meristem function. BELL-KNOX interactions are selective, and essential for site-specific DNA binding. We aim to understand the functional relevance of BELL-KNOX interactions. We focused on functional characterization of the BELL protein ATH1, and to a lesser extent, also two related BELL proteins PNY and PNF, in relation to their interacting partners, the KNOX proteins STM, KNAT1/BP, KNAT2 and KNAT6. Our finding that combined mutations in three genes that encode STM-interacting BELL proteins, ATH1, PNY and PNF, phenocoy stm mutants, not only highlights the role of these BELL proteins in SAM function, but also provides a strong indication that in plants, TALE HD proteins operate as heterodimeric complexes. Since ATH1 was further found to be required for proper establishment of meristm-organ boundaries and for control of stem growth in conjunction with a different set of KNOX protein, KNAT2 and KNAT6, this indicates that combinatorial control of developmental processes by TALE HD proteins might also be a common feature in plants. Interestingly, a more complicated network seems to underlie the function of KNOX-BELL heterodimeric complex as our data suggested they can interact at multiple levels (Chapter 3). Additional complicacy of this network comes from the overlapping and opposite roles of BELL proteins, ATH1 and PNY, depending on different developmental stages (Chapter 4). In conclusion, the research presented in this thesis suggests that BELL and KNOX proteins act as functional dimeric unit to control different aspects of plant architecture. And their interactions form a complex network throughout development, which is most likely to fine-tune TALE HD heterodimer activity.

▼ The main goal of the study is to examine and develop a spatial planning methodology that would enhance the sustainability of urban development by integrating the surface water system in the urban and regional planning process. Theoretically, this study proposes that proactive-integrated policy and approaches need to be promoted in order to gain enough capacity to organize and preserve the space for water systems along with spatial requirement of urban development. It is important to have a paradigm shift both in water management and spatial planning and design. In the Chinese context, urban planning and water management are both undergoing a complex transformation process in concepts, contents, working approaches and institutionalization. The case study in Wuhan shows that since the 1990s, urban development has had a significant impact on the surface water bodies and their riparian zones either by size reduction or complete reclamation. The process of water-to-land conversions for urban construction has been intensified under the pressure of the geographically outwardly expanding pattern and hierarchical-concentric urban form. The impacts on the surface water systems from urban activities have not been adequately reflected in the urban planning system. The time-lag between the two policy processes for water and urban development has made it difficult for urban planners and water managers to adopt effective measures to address the water-related problems in an integrated and coordinated manner. The case studies from the Netherlands show the experience of Dutch spatial planning and water management offers many valuable lessons not only in planning content, but also planning process for Wuhan or other cities in China. Some concepts in the national spatial water policy, i.e. ‘space for nature’, ‘space for water’, ‘green-blue network’, ‘climate-proof city’ may be a good practice for Chinese urban planners and water managers. The practical experiences also show that integrating water issues in spatial planning could bring opportunities for making an attractive city with good quality of space. The trend of urban development in Wuhan shows that the size of the urban expansion will be larger in the coming decades and the pressure on water systems from rapid economic development will remain high. It is urgent to have integrated planning options from the strategic level to the local action level. At the strategic level, proactive land use planning for urban development should consider water issues at the initial stage before negative impacts occur. Clear lines of responsibility between different departments should be demarcated so as to harmonize the fragmented and dispersed local efforts. Public participation is encouraged during the process. At the local level, an on-site water-sensitive design approach should be advocated. The measures of zoning to control construction and land use in and around the surface water bodies can be used but should reflect the consensus of views from various agents such as urban planners, water…

▼ Public spaces in Dutch city centres are increasingly
subject to facelifts. The car parking that dominated city squares until the 1980s has been removed and replaced by modern street furniture, city stages, and an abundance of sidewalk caf鳮 At the same time, public spaces are more controlled by camera surveillance and strict regulation. Why and how do these makeovers occur? It has been the central aim of the present study to answer this question; that is, to elucidate the social antecedents (background) of the redevelopment of Dutch city squares and to chart its course (process). To this end, we have portrayed the historical development and the main current trends in the design and management of Dutch public space (Chapter 2 and 3). In addition, we have investigated the increasing involvement of the private sector in redevelopment processes and have explored to what extent this might affect the design and management of public space (Chapter 4). Through this actor approach, the thesis complements the main body of public-space literature, which tends to focus on the users (the ‘demand side’) rather than reviewing the role and objectives of the responsible actors (the ‘supply side’). The empirical section (Chapter 6-8) outlined the results of case-study research performed in the city centres of Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Enschede, and ’s-Hertogenbosch. In each of these four cases, the redevelopment of a cluster of two squares has been investigated: respectively the Schouwburgplein and Beurstraverse, the Grote Markt and Statenplein, the Oude Markt and Van Heekplein, and the Markt and Loeffplein. The research is conducted by means of desk research, semi-structured interviews with key persons engaged in the redevelopment of public space, observations, and policy analysis. The research results indicate that recent redevelopment tends to occur in public spaces located within or very close to the historic city centre, yet lack historicity themselves. Consequently, they could be thoroughly upgraded without much resistance from the local population and thus offered much freedom to the actors involved to create spaces that fit the needs of the current society and the main stakeholders. The private sector has been involved in the redevelopment of four out of eight squares, but its tasks were limited. Except for the Beurstraverse, the role of the local government was still extensive regarding all redevelopment tasks, especially process and maintenance. The private sector’s financial involvement was mainly limited to indirect contributions via the price paid for the land. Private-sector representatives regarded these as tangible financial payments, while the public sector did not. Private-sector involvement improves the coherence between buildings and public space and has no negative effect on the duration of redevelopment processes. It leads to restricted accessibility, but only in areas that are private rather than public space. The involvement of the private sector in the redevelopment of public space needs further questioning in…

▼ The study of relationships between regional performance and varieties of capitalism within developing countries is an interesting and challenging topic. Although it is evident that capitalist institutions have made further inroads in Southeast Asia, it is far from certain how particular institutional arrangements should be classified and how institutions will change in the future. What seems reasonably certain, however, is that the traditional dichotomy of liberal capitalist systems (notably the USA and the UK) and coordinated capitalist systems (Germany and Japan) may prove to be an unsuitable lens through which to scrutinise the performance of non-core regions. For example, Vietnam, with a similar population to Germany, is neither liberal nor coordinated. This thesis has been concerned with the bandwidth of capitalist variety within Southeast Asia and has made an effort to apply elements of the Varieties of Capitalism approach as developed by Hall and Soskice (2001) to Thailand and Malaysia. The institutional turn in economic geography has proven to be valid and useful for explaining patterns of regional development in the developed world. Nevertheless, remarkably few publications employed an institutional approach for non-core regions in developing areas. From a theoretical and methodological point of view, then, it was and is interesting to scrutinize to what extent the institutional turn makes sense in such areas. The province of Satun in Southern Thailand and the state of Perlis in Northern Malaysia, two neighbouring non-core regions, were chosen to identify, explore and unravel capitalist institutions and to investigate its impact on patterns of economic activity and human development. Satun and Perlis were selected as research regions because they have much in common, but belong to two different countries. They have experienced remarkably different developmental trajectories: Satun’s economy has remained a resource frontier (seafood and natural rubber), whereas Perlis’ economy was transformed into an economy dominated by public services. Hence, national institutions matter and consequently, the Varieties of Capitalism approach is a suitable point of departure. Primary data were gathered by conducting two firm surveys, two social network surveys and semi-structured interviews with civil servants, bank managers, politicians and members of the regional press. In total, relevant information was obtained from 213 actors. The results indicate that the national institutional framework has a tremendous influence on the development performance in Perlis. The transformation into an economy based on (state owned) branch plants and public sector activities and the increasingly higher standard of living compared to Satun could not have been achieved without the support of the federal Malaysian government. Although several national institutions are present in Satun its development performance is also influenced by two other factors: regional institutions structured by ethnicity and (inter)national demand for seafood and…

▼ This thesis is a result of fieldwork on foraging ecology of Afrotropical stingless bees in Uganda. This is because most studies on stingless bee ecology are largely based in South America and South-east Asia and have ignored the aspects of Afrotropical stingless bees. The central question is how the Afrotropical bees co-exist by partitioning their resources. Aspects of nesting behaviour of the stingless bees are presented in chapter 3. In BINP there are at least five stingless bee species belonging to two genera: Meliponula (four species) and Hypotrigona (one). The bee species nest in tree cavities, mud house wall crevices and underground. The relative importance of predation, food supply, nesting site and elevation affecting abundance of stingless bees were studied for meliponines in chapter 4. Predators were treated more comprehensively compared to previous field studies. Our figures for nest density for both the honey bee and the combined stingless bee species may agree with estimates from drier parts of Africa and some habitats in the American and Asian tropics. At an average of 12 percent/year, meliponine colony mortality from predators in this study was generally higher than those reported for American and Asian tropics. The use of tools by humans and chimpanzees caused high rates of stingless bee nest mortality. Temporal resource partitioning and climatological factors influencing colony flight and foraging of stingless bees is discussed in chapter 5. Foragers of M. ferruginea and M. nebulata exited their nests in characteristically distinct foraging bouts suggesting the recruitment methods used may be direct leading or ‘piloting’. The number of individuals in a returning bout was less than that in an exiting bout suggesting recruits do not follow experienced foragers the whole distance to food source. Differences in pollen foraging by A. mellifera and stingless bees (M. bocandei and M. nebulata) were studied in chapter 6. Palynological results showed an overlap among the three bee species. A. mellifera the larger bee had the highest diversity while M. nebulata had the lowest. The recruitment technique to food sources is implicated to have been one of the factors accounting for the differences in pollen foraging behaviour. Foragers of M. nebulata flew out in distinct bouts which probably led to the low pollen diversity. Chapter 7 discusses factors influencing sugar concentration of collected nectar. Two stingless bee species (H. gribodoi and M. ferruginea) were used to show co-existence among the two genera. The smaller bee (H. gribodoi) collected nectar of higher sugar concentration. Factors that influenced sugar concentration of collected nectar included botanic origin of the nectar, bee species, bee colonies, month of year, time of day and the local environment. In Chapter 8, a study on seasonal floral resource utilisation and pollen collection by A. m. scutellata was undertaken. Results showed that the flowering time of bee plants varied with the different seasons of the year. Most plants bloomed during…

▼ Spermatozoa are produced by the process of spermatogenesis. At the base of this process is a pool of spermatogonial stem cells that generate new stem cells as well as committed spermatogonia that will eventually differentiate in spermatozoa. A tight balance between self-renewal and differentiation must be maintained to prevent accumulation of stem cells or depletion of the seminiferous tubules. The mechanisms by which self-renewal and differentiation are regulated are largely unknown. Therefore we aimed at identifying genes involved in spermatogonial stem cell self-renewal and/or differentiation. Genes have been identified using both a candidate and a genomics approach. The gene Ly6a/e, also known as Sca-1, is frequently used for the isolation of hematopoietic stem cells and plays a role in the repopulating capacity of these cells and the development of committed progenitor cells. Furthermore, LY6a/e was reported to be expressed by the testicular side population. In this thesis, expression of SCA-1 has been localized to mesenchymal and peritubular cells and histological examination of Ly6a/e null mice testes revealed no abnormal phenotype. Together these observations indicate that LY6A/E is not expressed by spermatogonial stem cells and that LY6A/E does not play a role in spermatogonial stem cells self-renewal or differentiation. Expression of Utf1 is rapidly down-regulated upon differentiation of embryonic stem cells. In chapter 3, expression of UTF1 in the rat testis is shown to be restricted to the population of cells that contains the stem cells, i.e. gonocytes in embryonic and neonatal rats and to a subpopulation of early A spermatogonia in adult rat testis. This result together with the recently proposed notion that UTF1 may be involved in the maintenance of a specific epigenetic profile suggests that UTF1 plays a role in maintaining the spermatogonial stem cells in an undifferentiated state. Two protocols of spermatogonial stem cell differentiation have been established. Both, BMP4 and activin A induce differentiation of the GC-6spg spermatogonial stem cell line. Expression of c-KIT, a marker of differentiated spermatogonia, is up-regulated and BMP4 and activin A receptors are expressed. Using BMP4 induced differentiation of the GC-6spg cells as a model in a time course micro-array experiment revealed numerous transcripts that are differentially regulated during the differentiation process. Among the differentially regulated genes are several TGF? family members and downstream targets. Furthermore, a number of genes more generally known to play a role in stem cell maintenance or differentiation are identified. Quantitative RT-PCR confirmed the expression pattern of six differentially regulated genes, indicating that the list of genes identified can be used as candidate genes for further research. Furthermore, our experiments indicate that activin A and BMP4 act via distinct and identical downstream target genes. Our results form a strong foundation for further research as multiple genes have been identified…
