▼ This dissertation contains three essays on international capital markets. The first essay examines the information environment of analysts in countries following the mandatory adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). We examine the analysts’ forecast precision across 18 countries before and after they mandated the adoption of the IFRS, relative to 12 countries that retained local accounting standards. Using empirical proxies suggested by Barron et al. (1998) model, we find that the precision of both common and private information in analyst forecasts increase after IFRS adoption. In order to invest more effort in private information discovery, analysts are reducing the firm coverage. Partitioning my sample, we find that the analysts’ information improves more in countries with better shareholders’ rights protection or in countries with higher disclosure ratings. My result is consistent with theories that posit that better accounting disclosure triggers new information generation by sophisticated information processors.

▼ Multinational corporations (MNCs) are facing challenges relating to the fast changing and dynamic 21st Century global business environment. These challenges raise critical concerns relating to the strategic role of successive Nigerian governments in creating a favourable macro-environment that enhances industry competitiveness in attracting and sustaining foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows - considering the fact that since independence in 1960, there has been a significant decline in the Nigerian manufacturing industry output and contribution to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). These developments underpin the motivation and rationale for this thesis, which aims to provide better understanding of the dynamic nature of macro-environmental factors influencing the levels of firm competitiveness in the Nigerian manufacturing industry. To achieve this aim, the thesis adopts a pragmatists paradigm underpinned by a mix of Questionnaire Survey involving 84 MNCs operating in the Nigerian manufacturing industry, and a sample size of 925 respondents comprising of 288 Top managers, 460 Staff, and 177 Clients, and Semi-structured interviews of 5 CEOs. The data from the questionnaires and interviews were subjected to factor analysis, multiple regression analysis and content analysis using SPSS and NVivo respectively. The hypotheses tests (H1, H1a-H1e) reveal that increased perceived threats from macro-environmental factors significantly reduces the levels of firm competitiveness in the Nigerian manufacturing industry. This is supported by the evidence that, on aggregate, respondents’ perceived levels of threats from politico-legal, economic and financial, sociocultural, technological and ecological environmental factors have a statistically significant negative effect on firms’ competitiveness in the Nigerian manufacturing industry. Using Beta values, politico-legal, economic and financial, and sociocultural factors are identified as the key inhibitors; and in contrast, ecological and technological factors are identifies as the key drivers, of the levels of firm competitiveness. More specifically, on aggregate: (1) Politico-legal factors has statistically significant negative effect, (2) Economic and financial factors has a negative effect but statistically not significant, (3) Sociocultural factors has a negative effect but statistically not significant. In contrast, both (4) Technological factors, and (5) Ecological environmental factors were statistically significant with positive effects, on the levels of firm competitiveness. In addition, the results for both ‘Top Managers’ and ‘Staff’ were statistically significant, while, that for ‘Clients’ were statistically not significant. For the content analysis, a process of pre-coding, unitisation and relationship between themes was adopted. The thematic findings reveals that there is an urgent need for Top managers in manufacturing firms to continuously sense and seize market opportunities, in order to sustain firm competitiveness and to attract increased FDI inflows…

▼ For decades, research has shown the importance of
ethics in the
business environment. With the increased
internationalization of corporations, the need for a focus on
international business ethics has also increased. To date, research
has predominantly focused on
business ethics in large firms and the
factors that affect the ethical decision-making processes of the
managers and executives in these firms. What appears to be limited
in literature is ethics and ethical decision-making as it relates
to small businesses. With the economic importance of small
businesses, this area of research needs to be explored especially
from a cross-cultural basis. This dissertation helps to fill that
gap. Building on existing research, this study seeks to explore the
factors that contribute to and influence the ethical decisions of
small
business owners and managers in an emerging market,
specifically India. The methodology and tests used in this study
will provide a foundation to better understand how these ethical
factors affect the ethical decisions of small
business owners and
managers in emerging markets.

▼ Globalization has cause organizations between nations to be more integrated and interdependent than before. Taiwan, being an economy based on
international trade, has abundant experience in
international assignments among
business organizations. Due to the changing environments, organizations developed various forms of
international assignments. Other than the standard expatriate assignments, short-term assignments,
international business travelers (IBT), commuter assignments, rotational assignments and virtual assignments are emerging alternatives to deal with
international issues. The IBT is likely to be a big portion of
international assignment used in Taiwan, as the number of
business travel rises. A qualitative research was held and 11 IBTs from Taiwanese firms was interviewed. The findings are as follow:
1. The proportion of time spent overseas per year differs from IBTs with different backgrounds.
2. The positive factors of IBT work are increase of specialties training, increase of job satisfaction and the rise of personal development.
3. The negative factors of IBT work are pressing work schedules, culture and cognition gaps, time differences and abnormal work schedules, health and safety concerns, separation of family and friends and confliction between work and personal schedules.
4. The standard of travel class influences IBTsâ perspective towards the job and also their life style.
5. IBT cannot totally be substituted.

▼ The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the factors that influence the collaborative partnership effectiveness (CPE) among entity participants of the UN Global Compact (Global Compact). A survey hosted in the internet SurveyMonkey website was used to collect the data from 90 Global Compact participants. Data collected were analyzed using the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software Version 21.0 for Windows. A combination of statistical tests such as multiple linear regressions (MLR) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used to provide answers to the three research questions: (a) to what extent collaboration readiness scores predict willingness and ability to collaborate, (b) to what extent differences in CPE scores exist in participant’s job title or position, and (c) to what extent differences in CPE scores exist in entity’s amount of experience. Research results showed statistical evidence that collaboration readiness is a significant predictor of participants’ willingness and ability to collaborate effectively. Other findings of the study indicated that job title or position had no significant difference in CPE. CEOs and other positions showed statistically similar readiness, as well as willingness and ability to collaborate effectively. Additional findings indicated that experience was not a significant factor in CPE. Participants with lesser number of collaboration experiences were equally ready, willing, and able to collaborate compared to those participants who had greater number of collaboration experiences.

▼ Motivation for this research was driven by the fact
that even though telecommunications is regarded as the primary
sector driving overall infrastructure development in emerging
economies, it is acknowledged that the area of telecommunications
internationalisation is relatively new. The MTN Group’s
internationalisation strategy on the African continent was used as
the object of study. Drawbacks to traditional theories were
explored in terms of fast-paced internationalisation. A conceptual
framework (figure 2.1) was created from loosely-held concepts
extracted from the literature review. Qualitative data analysis of
the in-depth interviews conducted with 15 respondents in executive
and senior roles, revealed a validation of the constructs in the
conceptual framework as factors influencing MTN’s
internationalisation strategy. The conceptual framework that
emerged from the findings was found to represent an integrated view
of the dynamism in which micro (entry mode, entry timing, firm
size, and entrepreneurial proclivity) and macro (institutional
development, culture, and country of origin effects) level
constructs simultaneously influenced MTN’s rapid
internationalisation on the African continent.

▼ Prior research on capability upgrading in developing
country firms has emphasised the importance of gaining legitimacy
in the public domain. For technology-based firms this implies
disclosure of knowledge assets through patents and scientific
publications. In the absence of a managed approach to intellectual
property (IP) protection, this disclosure often takes place in a
desultory manner with disappointing results. Therefore, this
research focuses on the formalisation of IP as a key indicator of
the evolution of a developing country technology-based MNC using
Sasol as a case study. The paucity of research into South African
firms compared to the abundance of literature on the evolution of
firms from other developing countries provides further
justification for this study. Patent and publication data
associated with Sasol (1955-2005) was analysed using
multidimensional scaling and multiple regression techniques in
order to examine the nature of disclosure. Patent value was
estimated using forward citations and an adaptation of Putnam’s
Value Index, while journal impact factors served as a proxy for the
value of scientific publications. The role of
international
connections was investigated by examining co-authorships. The
evidence suggests that formalisation of IP promotes an awareness of
the purpose of disclosure, enhancing indigenous capability to
appropriate returns from R&D and gain legitimacy within the
global research community. This evolutionary trajectory may be
accelerated by leveraging
international research
connections.

▼ This research identifies modes of market entry and
strategies adopted by South African companies doing
business in
Tanzania. Data was collected through one-onone semi-structured
interviews with South African company executives in banking,
retail, manufacturing, financial services, and hospitality and
engineering construction sectors. The study found that the mode of
market entry was related to the degree of commitment of resources
irrespective of the industry sector. The mode of market entry for
the banking sector was influenced by the degree of politicisation
as this is highly regulated. Acquiring state owned firms in
privatisation partnership with government had the obvious advantage
of being close to the pulse of policy thinking.
Business in
Tanzania thrived on relationships, partnering with locals using
joint ventures or acquisition as modes of market entry mitigated
risk. Greenfield investments in the retail sector were largely
unsuccessful due to a lack of knowledge about retail supermarkets
by locals, a fragmented sector and fierce informal market
competition. Tanzania is as an entry point into the wider EAC that
includes Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Malawi and Sudan.
Regionalism has resulted in significant gains for SA companies in
Tanzania. Operational challenges in Tanzania were similar with what
the literature proposes on emerging market economies: lack of
skills, exchange rate volatility, corruption, regulatory burdens,
poor infrastructure, thriving informal markets, and lack of law
enforcement, thefts and anti-SA sentiments all adding to the cost
of doing
business. This study further proposes a model that SA
companies can consider as part of their strategic planning process
for internationalisation of
business in the East African
Community.

▼ The main purpose of this research was to establish
the critical success factors that impact project success for major
projects in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The motivation was that
South African companies were geographically well positioned to
expand into this region which holds some of the world’s untapped
natural resources with potential for high returns. However the
business environment presented unique challenges due to lack of
institutional capacity, infrastructure and a weak private sector.
This resulted in a dominant role of government as well as community
concerns in project execution. Sasol’s project, commissioned in
2004, to bring natural gas from Mozambique to South Africa was
selected as a case study. The project team,
business clients,
contractors and independent consultants were interviewed on what
were the critical project success factors. The results indicated
that the leadership role of the sponsor and an experienced and
committed team were critical to project success. The roles of the
country manager and the performance of contractors were also
highlighted. External to the
business organisation were the role of
government and the involvement of the community. Government’s role
on institutional and physical infrastructure development was
highlighted. The importance of alignment of all project
stakeholders was emphasised as critical. Further, additional time
and resources spent on alignment and the initial planning phase
were critical to an efficient implementation phase.

▼ Customer churn is one of the key metrics defining company’s growth. While companies are increasing their investments into customer retention, churn remains remarkably high in most industries in B2B sector. This raises a question if service providers have thorough enough understanding of what causes their customers to churn, and how to effectively manage customer churn. This thesis explored executives assumptions on their customer churn, and we were able to provide suggestions on how to improve company’s resource allocation to increase customer retention. Quantitative analysis based on customer data, and qualitative analysis based on executive interviews were conducted to evaluate the executive’s understanding of their customer churn and their ability to improve customer retention. Those two analyses were then compared to each other to make conclusions on the matter. Research was conducted as a case study involving one service provider, with more than 4000 of their customer companies being included in the analysis. Customer churn has been studied widely, and predictive analytics has been found to be effective in detecting future churners. In addition, other studies are suggesting that executive’s might have wrong assumptions of what causes their customers to churn, and their capability of assessing the issue has been questioned. It is crucial for service providers to retain their customers, and even a 10% increase in customer retention can cause 30% increase in company valuation. Hence, misconceptions of what causes customer churn should not be tolerated, and companies should understand their customer churn thoroughly.
By possessing the results from executive interviews and from customer data analysis, we were able to draw a conclusion whether the assumptions possessed by the executives were aligned with what the data was telling. While the executive’s assumptions were somewhat accurate and aligned with the data analysis results, there was still room for improvement in understanding what causes customers to churn and how to detect the future churners. Based on the results, it is reasonable to expect that service providers could improve their customer retention by deepening their understanding of their customer churn.

▼ There are many reasons to believe that budgeting lies at the heart of business management. Gray et al (2001:324) states that ―budgetary planning and control is the most visible use of accounting information in the management control process. By setting standards of performance and providing feedback by means of variance reports, the accountant supplies much of the fundamental information required for overall planning and control. However, Gray et al (2001:324) point out that capital budgeting decision is limited by the intricacies of the international business environment, which is characterized by economic, social, political, and cultural diversity. Therefore, decisions of capital investments and budgetary controls are more problematic (Gray et al., 2001:14). One of the defining characteristics of the globalization of the world economy in the past two decades has been the spread of multinational corporations' activities across countries, and, as a result, significant increases in global foreign direct investment (FDI) outflow in the 1990s (from R233 billion in 1990 to R1, 379 billion in 2000). For example, the total stock of Chinese direct investment abroad nearly tripled over the 1990s (from 2.2 trillion in 1990 to 6.3 trillion in 2000) as Chinese multinational corporations generated an increasingly large share of world GDP (6.8 percent in 1994 and 8.6 percent in 2000). Multinational corporations have become an important conduit in the global allocation of investment funds. However, the business environment in international markets has been considered volatile; there is no reliable and accurate method to aid 2 multinational corporations about decisions about the international environment. Thus, multinational corporations have encountered risk and challenge. Given the development and challenge of the international environment, this study have been considered to plan over a longer time horizon, develop formal mechanisms to set aside funds for preserving existing facilities, increase automation of the process, and link capital planning decisions to statewide performance goals and strategic plans. This research draws upon existing theoretical determinants of capital budgeting and empirically tests the hypotheses across a sample of multinational corporations in China. Although the sample is from China, the results have important implications for multinational corporations based in other countries. This paper is composed of four parts. The first part briefly gives both a theoretical and practical overview of multinational capital budgeting analysis. The second part discusses the data collection techniques and the questionnaire design used in this study. The third part provides some important findings of this research. The last section offers some conclusions from this study.

▼ This thesis paper uncovers the valued aspects of considerations for developing the business network by transnational entrepreneurs while they establish their business in countries like Finland. For doing so, this study undergoes a qualitative research model for collecting, constructing, formulation and analyzing empirical data with comparison to the scientific literature review of different business network approaches.
This thesis paper provides a comprehensive theoretical base of understanding through carefully selecting critical concepts on entrepreneurship, transnational entrepreneurship, and business network. The author has constructed the literature review by following fundamentals of qualitative research methods of (summarizing, categorizing and structuring) for data collection and analysis of theoretical and empirical data. This study has been constructed by carefully fragmented chapters that would lead through a continuous flow of research steps towards exploring the results.
Portraying the actual scenario, the author provides details discussion on the transnational entrepreneurship and its formidable impact over the economy in countries like Finland. Moreover, for analyzing the empirical data, the author has fragmented the whole discussion on the interviews in three phases, so that, the different aspects of network considerations can be well presented, understood and analyzed. The first phase focuses on representing previous experiences, the second phase focuses on the current business establishment process, while the third phase represents the organization’s operational process.
The author has considered the four fundamental aspects of the business networks while constructing the analysis on the outcomes. Which consist of the followings, business network as structure, relationship, position, and process. Hence, the outcomes would suggest a scientific guideline from the business network development perspective, for new transnational entrepreneurs in Finland.
Off all, this study offers a scientifically structured discussion of the topic by formulating a solid theoretical base followed by high quality and detailed empirical datasets with valued ethical standards.

▼ It is an emerging phenomenon that the leading multinational companies are studying how to use the engagement experiences of customers and communities as the foundation of value co-creation. To achieve this, the business leaders have increasingly adopted an ecological organizational form, namely business ecosystem. Google, Amazon and Microsoft are the real world examples and pioneers in this field. However, in the academic research, it is addressed by a number of researchers that there is significant lack of empirical studies that examines the emergence and formation of business ecosystem, especially in ICT industry. In essence, this study takes Cloud as the context to develop concepts on the emergence of business ecosystem and examine the manifestation of such evolution in the emerging business field.
Through extensive literature reviews and empirical interviews, the current study developed answers to the research question, “How do new business ecosystems emerge, in the context of Cloud computing?” at qualitative level. In general, it is considered in the study that business ecosystem is a type of more advanced business form emerged recently. It has the characteristics as follow: provision of value, integration with external partners, requiring multiple participants, shifting from individual to collaborative thinking, interdependence of the participants, value co-creation, co-petition, open innovation and shared fate of success or failure.
From a macro level viewpoint, the emergence of business ecosystem is the result of the continuous evolution of business forms, from linear type towards a more complex networked type. At a micro level, for an ecosystem to emerge in a given industry, it involves strategic design and appropriate execution. Furthermore, a set of critical elements need to be in the right place for a business ecosystem to emerge, which including: prerequisite conditions for ecosystem to emerge, external environmental and resource, shared vision, leadership of the ecosystem, common platform, mechanisms of the ecosystem, ecosystem healthiness, and IT infrastructure.
The study further suggests that the emergence of business ecosystem as a new business form is not out of luck or probability. It is a natural path that under governance of the evolution forces existing in the social-economic contexts, just as the evolution of all the living creatures in the natural environment. For this broader perspective, the emergence of ecosystem is inevitable due to the social-economic and technological driving forces.

▼ The veil over Africa’s economic improvement has finally been cut off giving the continent a positive face lift in terms of her contribution towards the world economy. Many countries in Africa have been considered emerging economies due to improved economic policies and stabilization of the political environment. Foreign investors and firms seeking new markets and opportunities could take advantage by engaging in relationship and network building to facilitate entry into African markets. Hence, this paper seeks to highlight some possible entry networks that could easily facilitate firms’ internationalization. Taking position within the network enhance strategic move through exchange of information. The information gathered facilitates firms’ internationalization decision and again deals with psychic distance threats. With regards to entry into Africa, internationalizing firms for the fear of high risk and turbulent nature employs network approach in extending their operations. Generally the network is linked with firms both domestic and other foreign who have already entered African markets. The international experience of such firms proffer learning environment and knowledge about the happenings of doing business in that turbulent emerging markets. Business agencies, firm-2-firm, professional bodies, municipalities, personal contacts, student nationals trained in the country of the internalizing firms among others could all form the network web upon which entry could be attained.

▼ Master’s thesis work was selected together with University of Oulu and author of this thesis, where the goal was to highlight the role and contribution of sales and marketing functions in disruptive energy business context. The healthy relationship of sales and marketing may guarantee a sustainable business where both functions should have unified vision, strategies and objectives to achieve their goal. There is serious consensus for sales and marketing integration as business situation is getting more and more complex. The electricity industry like other industries has been influenced by advent of technology, the rise of Internet, usage of information and communication. To encounter this advanced setup, budgets and priorities are rethought, and sustainability becoming the key factor in shaping up the skills and resources an organization may possess. Due to all these subsequent changes, there is an overall change in business structure for all industries and energy market is no exception. Consequently, some of the key business practices have been highlighted in this work. These business practices reflect not only traditional business structure but, also opens up relatively modern practices that are affecting energy business. Keeping these changing trends in mind, a case study has been analyzed in order to signify the role of sales and marketing units to give its respective firm competitive advantage over others. The thesis work also investigates the level of integration between sales and marketing functions in order to create value to its customers. As the case study has been conducted in Finnish company therefore; it may not provide a generalized global context. There is an attempt to give a theoretical framework which might bring positive theoretical and practical implication of the research work.

▼ Corporate social responsibility is a concept where companies voluntarily set guidelines on how to conduct responsible business and how to meet the growing requirements of external stakeholders. Having business operations internationally in multiple regions, multinational companies are subject to more stakeholder pressure than companies that are active in only one market. Responsibilities that are expected to be considered by companies by stakeholders are usually described to be interrelated and include economic, legal, ethical, philanthropic and environmental aspects.
This thesis aims to add the internal view of the company to the existing theoretical body of work that mostly consists of reactive solutions to external stakeholder pressure. To gain insight as to how the internal CSR environment differs from the existing theoretical framework, empirical data was acquired by holding semi-structured interviews to three employees that work in CSR related tasks in UPM, the case company chosen for this thesis. The interview data was then analyzed in an effort to provide an oversight into the internal views and values towards CSR within the case company.
This study found out that the internal view to CSR in the case company revolves heavily around the interconnected layers of economic, environmental and social responsibilities. By conducting dialogue with various stakeholder groups that have different expectations related to CSR, the case company is able to pursue the optimal position between legal requirements, the stakeholder expectation and the possibilities of the company to meet those expectations. Furthermore, findings show that industry plays a heavy part in what CSR is conducted by a company and that the integration of CSR into corporate strategy is a fundamental part of creating a corporate culture where responsibility is not a separate entity from the business. Additionally, many CSR issues are global in nature and overcoming those requires a tremendous amount of effort from a growing network of companies and stakeholders, whose aim it should be to create requirements to responsibility that do not vary heavily between regions.
By using CSR, a company can increase their advantages and reduce their challenges arising from being a multinational company. Integrating CSR into business strategy creates internal advantages. Active stakeholder interaction improves and broadens the networks the company is a part of. Also, conducting responsible business reduces the external pressure the companies are subjected to.
The findings of this study could be used to show that further research in the field of CSR needs to be put into the integration of responsibility and business functions, the relationships between a company and its stakeholder groups. The latter especially from the perspective that stakeholder expectations and company possibilities are unlikely to completely match and an optimal solution can be achieved regardless. Lastly, research can be directed towards the growing amount of global issues and the…

▼ Today, data is increasingly gathered from end users via products and services. Business Intelligence (BI) tools may be utilized for analysis of the collected data to improve decision making process in a firm. This thesis focuses on the role of BI tools for internationalization and organizational learning. Particularly, usage of analytics tools in the mobile domain is concentrated on.
A multiple case study was conducted in collaboration with four Finnish companies. All the studied firms aim at internationalization, and have utilized mobile analytics tools in their business operations. The results indicate that BI/mobile analytics tools may facilitate organizational learning in many ways. Further, organizational learning may be part of the internationalization process of the firm. Based on the results, a model was developed and proposed, which integrates usage of BI tools with internationalization, and organizational learning theories. The model may be considered as a starting point for further theoretical development in the future.
The main managerial implication of the study is to understand the significant role of BI/mobile analytics tools in organizational learning, when aiming at internationalization in the context of mobile application business.

▼ With globalization and the current direction towards more integrated and cooperating world of business, workplaces and especially teams are becoming increasingly diverse. Cultural diversity brings with it benefits to the team, but also disadvantages like misunderstandings and even conflicts. In this thesis I aimed to find what leaders of multicultural teams have to take into account to avoid conflicts rising from different expectations and perspectives people from different cultures have.
To achieve this I first looked at the main differentiating variable in multicultural teams: culture, and then worked through diversity, teams and leadership to find approaches that lead to best results when managing multicultural teams. To do this I used literature review as there already is variety of literature of the different components, and also confirmed this through empirical study, where I observed and interviewed a multicultural team, OuluSES, for almost a year.
The most important findings were first of all about culture: culture was found to be emergent, people have their own individual culture, but are also part of bigger cultures. For managers of multicultural teams the most important finding was that creating personal relationships lessen the misunderstandings and especially conflicts in multicultural teams, and also lead to best results overall, especially compared to approaches where cultural differences were completely ignored.
The findings from this thesis not only offer a new perspective into the debate between static, national cultures and emergent cultures, but the biggest advantage of the thesis is for every-day leaders of multicultural leaders. As cultural diversity is bound to increase also in the future, workplaces are also bound to become increasingly diverse, which means that leaders have to be ready and equipped to deal with conflicts rising from the differences in expectations, which is where this thesis helps.

▼ Dynamic capabilities are those capabilities that characterize the firm’s potential to systematically solve problems, formed by its propensity to sense opportunities and threats, to make timely and market-oriented decisions, and change its resource base.
The purpose of this Master’s Thesis is to study dynamic capabilities in the context of exports and identify the how an exporting firm may be able to develop the capabilities to compete in dynamic market environments.
The data for this study was collected by conducting a literature review of academic articles. These academic articles were empirical studies on the subjects of resources, capabilities, dynamic capabilities, routines and exporting. The discussion and analysis of the academic articles followed an induction approach. Conclusions were drawn from the analysis and discussion of a select group of peer reviewed empirical studies on the subjects of resources, capabilities and dynamic capabilities in exporting/internationalization.
The findings show that the capabilities that enable dynamism in an exporting firm are a combination of the absorptive capabilities of exploration and exploitation and the export firm’s management’s entrepreneurial orientation. The export firm management’s entrepreneurial capacity, particularly the ability to sense and interpret opportunities in foreign markets and the ability to align and re-align internal resources to capitalize on those opportunities. The export firm management’s entrepreneurial capacity is essential as a guiding and supervisory capability that drives the use and development of export capabilities and facilitates the dynamism of the export firm through the creation, development and use of absorptive capabilities. The findings explain how routines are fundamental to export firms’ growth and development, and how routines enable the export firm sustain competitiveness in dynamic market environments over time. The study reveals a gap in the research of organizational routines in exporting.
Based on these findings the study draws some managerial and theoretical implications and recommends extending the study by conducting an empirical investigation. Due to the significance of routines, further research into the role of routines in dynamic capabilities in the context of exporting is also recommended.

Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys on distruptiivinen innovaatioteoria.

▼ The research focuses on examining how the industry-level challenges and features of Finnish fashion influence the internationalisation process of Finnish fashion firms, and do the challenges related to profiting from innovation contribute to this relationship. The author argues that the industry-level challenges have an effect on the Finnish fashion firms’ possibilities to profit from innovation. The research aims to form an understanding of the state of internationalisation of Finnish fashion firms, identify and describe the challenges, and find means to overcome them. The study has been conducted as a qualitative case study, in which the author has combined data from previous research literature with new empirical data collected from interviews of four case companies. Three of the case companies are small Finnish fashion firms at different stages of internationalisation. In addition a Swedish fashion firm which has succeeded in the international markets was interviewed for a comparison.
The theoretical framework was formed by combining internationalisation discussion with profiting from innovation research, and then applied in the context of Finnish fashion industry. The findings of this study indicate that the majority of Finnish fashion firms’ challenges concerning profiting from innovation in international markets originate from the industry-level challenges and features. The industry-level challenges influence the firms’ complementary assets and capabilities that are critical in terms of capturing the value from an innovation. This in turn has in turn contributes to the relationship and escalates the effect the industry-level challenges have on the internationalisation of Finnish fashion firms by strengthening their hindering impact. The empirical examination also revealed that Finnish fashion entrepreneurs do not consider themselves as innovators or their products as innovations. This can have a significant impact on the fashion firms’ abilities to profit from their innovations.
Previous research on the industry-level challenges and features of Finnish fashion is rather limited, and this study contributes to the discussion concerning the impact they have on individual firms. This study also examines the phenomenon from a new perspective by applying Teece’s (1986) seminal profiting from innovation model to the fashion industry. The results of this study can be used to enhance the internationalisation possibilities of Finnish fashion firms.

▼ Exporting is one of the most commonly used modes of international business operations and significant option to all sizes of companies considering foreign market penetration. As many cross-national policy makers encourages countries to open their trade barriers for free product trade, the global environment has gradually shifted in favor of using exporting as a foreign business operation mode.
This research focuses on product exportation and distinguishes it from service exports whereas differences may occur. The research contains a pre-assumption that the process of product exportation in business-to-business markets can be managed with universally best practices and the process for efficient exporting management can be found and described.

▼ Humor is important human behavior that plays a vital role in communication and social interactions. Being a social phenomenon, humor is pervasive in organizations and workplaces. Because of its playful nature and the amusement it engenders, its presence in organizations is usually seen a distraction. Traditionally, work has been conceived as a serious undertaking hence any seemingly frivolous behavior like humor should not form part of it. However, it has been suggested that humor has numerous benefits and facilitates organizational processes such as innovation. Unfortunately, there are few studies that have examined the role of humor in innovation. This study seeks to deepen understanding of humor’s utility in innovation management by exploring how individuals use of humor in different contexts affect their innovativeness.
The study draws on humor, creativity, innovation and social psychology literatures to develop a conceptual model. It examines how four types of humor used by employees in their interactions with their immediate co-workers (in-group) and with external actors (external group) affect their innovative work behavior and innovative performance. In testing this model, data is collected by a cross-sectional survey conducted in the fall of 2015. Employees from nine Finnish organizations involved in the HURMOS Project were invited to participate. At the end of the survey period, eighty-eight participants (n=88) completed the questionnaire. The data is analyzed by conducting correlational test and hierarchical multiple regression using SPSS Statistics 22 software.
The data analyses revealed some interesting findings. The results suggest that employees use of affiliative humor with the in-group and external group relate positively and significantly to innovative work behavior. Aggressive humor use has no significant relationship with innovative work behavior in the in-group context; but in the external group context, it has a negative significant association with innovative work behavior. The use of coping humor and reframing humor show no significant effect on innovative work behavior in both contexts. Also, affiliative humor, aggressive humor and coping humor show no significant direct relationship with innovative performance. On the contrary, reframing humor, surprisingly, relates positively to innovative performance in both contexts. Lastly, employees innovative work behavior relates positively to innovative performance. This study’s findings contribute to the existing knowledge by stressing the important role humor plays in individual innovativeness.

▼ In this paper, the study will deal with the theoretical basis of internationalization of New Ventures and the importance of networks to acquire the knowledge to develop mobile application products on a global level. It will weigh the different uses of networks for market entry for SMEs that have a lack of capital, both human and financial. The study will also look at mobile applications themselves and the business models they currently have as options to create their new ventures.
While many mobile app and technology companies look to globally release their mobile applications with the same approach without any change or localization, all consumers do not subscribe to the same buying tastes in every region. Taking into consideration buying patterns and regional differences, examination of the product positioning and applying this thought process to technology and how each company’s approach succeeded or failed.
In this paper, the focus will be examining several views: The idea of a globally released mobile application by a company, developed with the thought that the idea is so universal that it will succeed in every market, or the concept that even in the mobile application development area, that each “product” will need to be customized for certain markets for a more successful market entry.
Some other aspects of this paper will take a look at technology itself, both Mobile Applications and the Internet, as methods of market entry. With these technologies available to international new ventures, which do not have the financial capital to commit to internationalize.

▼ With the advent of internet and e-commerce, the way of carrying out business and transactions has changed to a great extent. Consumers are continuously changing the way they do shopping and this has forced retail business to transform their traditional brick and mortar into adopting multi-channel business models. Retailing is one of the most dynamic and competitive areas of business organization. Effective marketing, customer relationship management is the central dimension of successful retailing and the key to successful retailing is to be aware of the emerging opportunities and threats caused by environmental changes now and in the future.
This thesis paper investigates current conceptualization of ‘brick and mortar’ business models and electronic commerce business models and also tries to identify a unified conceptual model that helps retail business to effectively integrate the two channels and deliver a unique value to the consumers. This is achieved by reviewing the attributes of both the models and finally channeling the reviewed theories to adopting a multi-channel business model. The thesis paper first identifies the concepts of business model, as it is the business model of any organization, that helps to understand what kind of activities are carried out by certain organizations and how and why are those activities carried out. The business model is used to define unique value propositions for the customers of a company, and it is these business models that need transformation, in order for a company to adapt to changing competition and recognizing opportunities in certain scenarios.
The Brick and Mortar model is the oldest model that retailers have been using since centuries, however with the advent of internet; there was a threat of survival as the changing retail environment required retailers to change their traditional business models to adapt to the e-commerce environment. It is however true that, no single model is extremely superior to the other, but they do have relative advantages over the other. It is these differences and pros and cons, that influences a retailer to adapt to a multi-channel or hybrid business model.

▼ Expatriates are an increasingly important part of global organizations. As multinational corporations establish new subsidiaries, they require an individual or group of individuals to setup and oversee the proper operation of these companies in accordance with the global strategy. Expatriates allow parent organizations to transfer crucial knowledge, corporate philosophy and culture to a subsidiary, as well as acquire important information from the host country. The effective management of expatriates needs to include a performance measurement system with appropriate criteria.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the criteria utilized by researchers in the measurement of expatriate performance. The analysis will be conducted through the parent company’s point of view. The focus will be on whether or not the criteria currently used meets the objectives set forth by the parent organization as a primary stakeholder.
This study will utilize a systematic review of past research. The proper protocols and procedures were followed to ensure an unbiased group of articles were selected. The articles were analyzed to examine the objective, purpose and type of expatriate performance measurement criteria they utilized. The articles were also evaluated according of a parent company stakeholder checklist outlining the most important aspects to the parent organization.
The results of the study concluded that a research gap is evident. The measurement criteria utilized by the overwhelming majority of researchers does not meet the basic objectives set forth by the parent organization. A universal measurement framework for international assignments is absent, both in practice and in research. A small percentage of researchers are aware of this discrepancy and over reliance on a self-evaluation of performance when it comes to expatriate research.
In conclusion, the study shows a gap in the current expatriate research and suggests a more detailed look at the measurement criteria used by the researchers in this field. The current criteria utilized fails to meet the basic objectives of the parent company.

▼ Commercialization of products is an essential process for a firm in the course of value delivery. It is sometimes seen as a yardstick used in measuring the performance of the firm in the market as well as the revenue generating capacity of a firm. Premised on this, it is pertinent to ask how a successful commercialization strategy is being planned and executed by a firm. So, this research is hinged on the role of business model (innovation) in the commercialization strategies in SMEs.
The present study is then focused on how business model innovation contributes to the successful commercialization of products in SMEs and for this reason, a framework is introduced that explains the roles of open innovation, the business environment and product reconfiguration as inherent in the path to success in the market by SMEs. Hence, the framework is further anchored on the use of both inflows and outflows of knowledge or technologies by SMEs in product reconfiguration with the basic aim of commercialization of same successfully in the market. It should be borne in mind that a business model describes the rational a firm will use to make revenue in the process of value delivery and when the business model seems to be ineffective, a replacement comes in. In this wise, business model innovation is the replacement of an existing business model of a firm. Business model innovation will consequently evolve the means of product reconfiguration for a firm in the attempt to re-create and re-deliver value to its customers.
It follows therefore that business model innovation will aid the renewal of an existing product through reconfiguration in order to re-create, re-capture and re-deliver value in the market. In this line, the commercialization of products in the open market requires business model innovation to succeed. The open innovation environment therefore serves as the harbinger through which the innovation of a business model may take place by availing the firm the opportunity to collaborate and share ideas or technologies with others as opposed to the closed innovation attempt.
This study, which is done empirically, aims at contributing theoretically and managerially to helping firms understand the nature of their business model and recognize lapses inherent therein for renewal. More so, it will also serve as an avenue for managers to be more equipped in understanding their existing business model and to detect and benefit from the use of new and incipient technologies. The study has been carried out based on the use of empirical data collected from two case companies in Finland and Nigeria thereby producing a reliable result on the role of business model innovation in the commercialization strategies in SMEs and also demonstrating the importance of business model innovation in the internationalization exertion of SMEs.

▼ In search for innovation in the global economy, large corporations are striving to become more intrapreneurial. Organizational culture is widely recognized as a source of influence either enabling or impeding intrapreneurship and innovation in organizations, and corporations commonly engage in culture management and transformation programs targeting at developing more intrapreneurship-supportive organizational cultures. However, these programs have demonstrated high failure rates, indicating a lack of understanding of what organizational culture is and how culture creation occurs.
The objective of this study was to discover how large corporations can foster intrapreneurship and innovation through cultural transformation, and how organizational culture influences intrapreneurship and innovation. The research was conducted in form of literary review and analysis, combining the literature branches of organizational culture and cultural transformation with those of intrapreneurship and innovation. As a result, integrated models of intrapreneurship within a cultural framework and of transforming organizational culture towards more intrapreneurial were suggested.
The model suggests that organizations should aim at developing a culture for change, firstly through providing a sociostructural framework supporting intrapreneurship, and secondly through encouraging certain cultural behaviors with management practices or organizational members acting as change agents. Through mechanisms of producing culture — attributing and renegotiating meaning — the underlying, deepest assumptions are being altered, which is then manifested at the more superficial levels of values and products of behavior.
This study integrates two literature branches and proposes integrated models of intrapreneurship in the cultural framework. Further, it provides managerial implications on both strategic and operational level, introducing concepts and a framework for fostering intrapreneurship in organizations. This research calls for empirical data to validate the findings in future research.

▼ This research revolves around two major theoretical topics: international network and international sales. The study aims to combine both distinct research areas in order to understand how changes in the sales network influence the sales strategy of the firm. The focus is hereby on born global companies respectively international new ventures.
For this reason a framework is introduced that explains the inherent dynamics between sales network and sales strategy with a cycle model. Hereby it is argued that sales network characteristics have influence on specific dimensions of the sales strategy. The sales strategy itself apparently affects the firm’s performance which in turn is argued to influence the sales network. This framework is further on tested with the help of propositions. The empirical basis is provided by a qualitative single case study that is conducted with observations and interviews. The empirical data shows the influence between sales network characteristics and sales strategy components. Whereas no significant empirical proof can be granted to the introduced framework there is evidence that it should be tested with a bigger sample of firms in order to check its validity. Therefore this study contributes to theory in providing a framework for researching dynamics in sales network and sales strategy context. As is this research combines international network and sales literature it is adding to a more holistic understanding of international business. It is also contributing to managerial knowledge in a way that it adds to an understanding of how the sales environment of a firm influences the sales strategy and what impact is expected on the performance of the company.
