▼ In this dissertation, I examine intermarriage in Germany from 1875, when the Second Reich implemented obligatory civil marriage, to 1935, the year the Third Reich implemented the Nuremberg Laws. At its core are common mixed marriages between Protestants and Catholics, as well as the relatively less common ones between Jews and non-Jews. Like Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish communities themselves, social boundaries shaped these unions and spurred the ways in which their meanings changed over time. One of the principal claims is that “confessional,” “religious,” and “racial” boundaries have to be understood as distinct, overlapping, and changing. Most importantly, what it meant to be German in German history constituted the stakes of crossing these boundaries because the act determined the parameters of belonging and exclusion. The stakes for the historical actors constitute the stakes of this dissertation. I investigate what it meant to be German and who decided that meaning by analyzing the idea and practice of intermarriage over time. Individuals extract identity from boundaries because they create belonging. Acts of intermarriage and the reactions they generated were undertakings of boundary crossing that sparked changes to German identity. Over the course of six decades of boundary crossing examined in this dissertation, the confessional, religious, and racial boundaries themselves transformed, and sometimes overlapped. Intermarriage was central to the process of reducing Protestant and Catholic Germans into “Germans” and excluding Jews from that same category. It was not because the Nazis abolished the boundary between Protestants and Catholics, but because over the course of history individuals and German states established a language and a framework for the coexistence of Protestants and Catholics both intimately and socially. ▼ This dissertation examines the policies, promoters, and patterns of Japanese-Korean marriages (naisen kekkon) and Japanese-Taiwanese marriages (naitai kyōkon) in imperial Japan. It seeks to answer why the Japanese empire sanctioned intermarriage when the Euro-American empires condemned marriage between colonizers and colonized subjects in the twentieth century. It also questions who were the people that promoted intermarriage and why people intermarried in Japan, where the government legalized intermarriage but did not promote it at the national level. This research further investigates what happened to people who intermarried before 1945 in postwar Japan, and why so little is known about the history of Japanese-Korean and Japanese-Taiwanese marriages in contemporary Japan. With existing studies on the history of intermarriage in the Japanese empire focusing on colonial Korea and Taiwan, this project focuses on Japan. Through analysis of internal and external influences on the discourse of intermarriage in the metropole, it first argues that imperial Japan’s sanctioning of intermarriage was based on its population policies and observations of its contemporaneous empires, thus should not be equated with the absence of racism in Japan and its isolation from the world. It then reveals that intermarriage was promoted in Japan at the local level by the members of the Harmony Association (Kyōwakai), district commissioners (hōmen’iin), and Japanese women. By studying the history of Japanese-Korean and Japanese-Taiwanese marriages together rather than separately, this research demonstrates the limitation of relying on categories such as “colonizer” and “colonized” alone in understanding the promoters and patterns of intermarriage, and proposes consideration of a/sexuality and ability in addition to race/ethnicity, gender, and class when studying colonizer-colonized relationships in modern empires. Lastly, this research traces the history of intermarriage post-1945 to reveal the existence of Japanese-Korean and Japanese-Taiwanese couples in postwar Japan and argues that it has been selectively remembered. Engaging with scholarship in modern Japanese history, imperial and colonial studies, and gender and sexuality studies, this dissertation ultimately makes a case for a more inclusive history that includes into history those who are marginalized in, excluded from, and/or forgotten in existing mainstream frameworks of history, to explain contemporary social issues of historical origin, such as disavowal of racism, in hopes of making a positive social change. ▼ This thesis focuses on Albanian-Italian and Albanian-Romanian couples in Italy. Through application of the boundary-making framework to integration and intermarriage, this study looks at the processes by which partners in mixed unions deal with socially constructed boundaries inside and outside the couple and family sphere. The thesis is based on multiple qualitative methods, but primarily on in-depth interviews with 61 Albanian-Italian/Romanian couples in Italy. These research-participant couples differ in terms of marital and family status, place of origin and settlement, education and occupation. The core sample is composed of an Albanian in-between generation, now in their 30s, who emigrated during adolescence for various reasons (asylum, family reunification, healthcare, study, work). Thence, I moved towards an Italian or a Romanian partner of these primary participants. The original contribution of my study is both empirical and theoretical. From an empirical point of view, it explores the topic of intermarriage, which has not been previously examined in the existing literatures on the Albanian and Romanian migrations and is still understudied in Italy. In addition to this, the study specifically takes into account the combination of minority-majority (Albanian-Italian) and minority-minority (Albanian-Romanian) partnerships and marriages, whose conjoint analysis has been largely absent in intermarriage research. From a theoretical point of view, my research shows instead the importance of adopting a relational approach in migration studies through the inclusion of a plurality of social actors within the research design. In fact, while intermarriage in immigrant societies is usually interpreted as an indicator/agent of integration and through the essentialisation of the category of culture, my thesis proposes a novel understanding of intermarriage. I view intermarriage as a site of integration, and I see integration as a multi-way process of boundary change, which involves the national majority as well as multiple immigrant minorities interacting with and identifying each other in the construction of a common social space.

▼ The goal of this dissertation is to explore processes that shape interethnic and interracial relationships to gain greater insight into the strength, position, and nature of ethnoracial boundaries. In the 1st empirical chapter (chapter 2), I apply the status exchange hypothesis, which theorizes that ethnoracial minorities should have higher socioeconomic status than their white spouses to balance out their ethnoracial status discrepancies, to white-Latino intermarriages. This theory highlights a possible mechanism that drives intermarriage and indicates the height of barriers that groups face when intermarrying. I examine whether there are differences in the importance of status exchange in marriages between whites and foreign-born Latinos vs. whites and native-born Latinos. Unions between ethnoracial minorities and whites are considered to be a measure of integration into the mainstream for minorities given that whites are a socially dominant group. Using data from the 2008 through 2015 American Community Survey, my results suggest that there is evidence of status exchange for both foreign-born and native-born Latinos. For chapters 3 and 4, I analyze data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Freshmen to examine how skin color, a determinant for a host of unequal outcomes among ethnoracial minorities, relates to intergroup dating and friendships for ethnoracial minorities. For the 3rd chapter, I argue that darker skin can increase the likelihood of members from higher status ethnoracial groups to date individuals of lower status ethnoracial groups while lighter skin color can increase the likelihood of lower status ethnoracial group members to date higher status ethnoracial group members. The results from the 4th chapter show similar patterns seen in chapter 3. Specifically, among lower status ethnoracial group members, lighter skin color is associated with having more close friends from higher status groups. ▼ This thesis aims to identify opportunities and challenges of Thai marriage migrants in the UK in the context of transnational migration. In-depth, semi-structure interviews with 31 Thai marriage migrants were conducted to gain insights into their lived experiences. By identifying opportunities and challenges facing Thai women in the UK, this thesis contributes original knowledge on Thai women's post-migratory practices, cross-border connections, and wellbeing. I argue that cross-border connections play a crucial role in Thai marriage migrants' experiences and wellbeing in the host country. However, these connections are not static and can be strengthened or weakened depending on women's changing life circumstances. I explore Thai women's engagement in the home and beyond through four empirical components. First, I examine Thai women's social network formation and exchange of social capital with their co-ethnics and local people. Essentially, how women strategically use their social networks and exchange their social capital have important impacts on their wellbeing. Second, I explore the relationship of Thai women and homeland-state-religion organisations through a case study of a Thai temple in London. Here, I investigate how visiting the temple influences the maintenance of cross-border links of Thai marriage migrants and their wellbeing. I also examine how women partake and interact with the temple's activities and social groups. Third, I observe issues of everyday negotiations in Thai-British families, child-rearing decisions, and family aspirations, to discover how transnational practices permeate the private sphere of the family. Last, I focus on women's personal perceptions of opportunities and challenges they face while living in the UK. Employment, improved financial situation, access to welfare, and being in a more ‘liberating' society are viewed as prominent opportunities. Whilst deskilling, pressure from natal family, lack of social capital, family disagreement, domestic abuse, and adjustment to a new society are perceived as main challenges for Thai marriage migrants in the UK.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that Matthew included the name of Uriah (Matt 1:6) in the genealogy (Matt 1:2-17) in order to legitimise granting a fully-fledged Jewish identity to Gentile converts in his own day. Rather than the unnamed Bathsheba, it suggests the four named Old Testament outsiders in the Matthean genealogy, namely, Tamar (Matt 1:3), Rahab (Matt 1:5), Ruth (Matt 1:5) and Uriah (Matt 1:6), with respect to having a “better righteousness”, intermarriage and levirate marriage and argues that this approach brings clearer insight to the social setting of the Matthean community. Part I (chapter 1) examines the scholarly debate about the social setting of the Matthean community from the beginning of the mid 1940s onwards. It summarizes and compares three major redactional perspectives between the mid-1940s and mid-1980s, with the four major sociological perspectives in the 1990s, namely, Graham Stanton, Anthony Saldarini, Andrew Overman and David Sim. It will then examine the interdisciplinary works of Boris Repschinski and Paul Foster of the 2000s, before concluding that the Matthean community was exclusively conflicting with the contemporary Jewish leadership. Although it has been usual to approach the genealogy through seeking the significance of the four OT women, Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba (who, it should be noted, is not actually named), Part II (chapters 2 to 5) argues that this conventional approach has obscured the Matthean intention behind including the name of Uriah in the genealogy. It is better to find the significance of the genealogy by focusing on those who are actually named. Seeking the commonality amongst these named characters, in turn, leads to an examination of “better righteousness”, intermarriage, and levirate marriage in an attempt to illuminate their significance in the genealogy. In regard to “better righteousness”, having examined the Hebrew Scriptures, and Jewish and Christian literature contemporary with Matthew, it will show that the named outsiders group, namely, Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Uriah (rather than the unnamed Bathsheba), is more righteous than their corresponding characters from the dominant group, namely, Judah (Matt 1:3), Salmon (Matt 1:5), Boaz (Matt 1:5) and David (1:6), respectively. Noting that the four named outsiders were all intermarried, chapter 3 will show that the bans against intermarriage with the seven Canaanite nations (Deut 7:1-4) went through a four-phase development. The four stages were Pentateuchal, Early Second Temple, Mid-late Second Temple and Early Rabbinic. Then it will make a close comparison between the post-Ezran ideology and the Matthean attitude towards Gentile converts in the genealogy, in order to show that, employing a contemporary exegetical technique, Matthew includes Tamar in the genealogy to legitimise the granting of a fully-fledged Jewish identity to Gentile converts. ▼ This dissertation examines the determinants and consequences of immigrant-native intermarriage in two Nordic countries, Sweden and Denmark, between 1980 and 2011. An increase in immigration during the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first century in the countries under study was accompanied by an increase in intermarriage. However, the marriages of natives and some immigrant groups are more frequent than others, which may indicate that the strength of the immigrant-native boundary differs between immigrant groups. In contrast to previous research, this dissertation focuses on the perspectives of both the immigrants and the native majority and attempts to answer the following questions: who crosses the immigrant-native boundary through marriage, is immigrant-native intermarriage of a special nature, and does immigrant-native intermarriage contribute to successful integration.This dissertation is a compilation of four papers, each of which is a quantitative study of the determinants or consequences of intermarriage that relies on register data collected by the administrative authorities in the countries in question. The findings of this dissertation show that for natives both economic and non-economic status in the marriage market are associated with intermarriage. Moreover, patterns of age-assortative mating differ in intermarriages and in marriages of the native majority. For both Swedish men and women, unions in which the partner is considerably younger are relatively more frequent among immigrant-native intermarriages. The findings also suggest that the larger age gap between men and women in intermarriages is not only related to the differential treatment of certain immigrant groups in the Swedish marriage market but also partly the result of racial discrimination. Intermarriage nevertheless is related to immigrant integration. The findings from this dissertation show that intermarriage leads to positive income development for intermarried immigrants, particularly for immigrants whose country of origin means that they would otherwise experience difficulties in the labour market. With respect to demographic integration, intermarried immigrants deviate strongly from endogamous immigrants. While immigrants of certain origins display fertility patterns which confirm the existence of son preferences, immigrants from the same origins who are in unions with natives do not show such patterns by and large. This dissertation shows how immigrant-native intermarriage is connected with the broader social structure. An increase in immigrant-native intermarriage reflects the openness of a society to a certain degree. However, the findings of this dissertation also show that intermarriage is related to the social structure in a particular way. ▼ This dissertation examines socio-economic outcomes of first and second generation immigrants in Denmark and adds to our understanding of different trajectories of immigrant integration by studying policy and family relatedfactors. The association between family composition and socio-economic outcomes of the individual is in this thesis examined by studying the effects of intermarriage. Comparably high intermarriage premiums are found for foregin born who experience limited possibilities in the Danish labor market. Positive effects of intermarriage are also found when comparing the educational performance of children of intermarriage to the educational performance of children with two foreign born parents, also when taking school and family level characteristics into account.Policy and legislation constitute other factors that can either stimulate or hinder immigrant integration. Rules and regulations concerning naturalization is one such policy area. Consistent naturalization premiums are found in this dissertation, but only for immigrants who are more marginalized in the Danish labor market. Also education policies matter. An educational reform with the aim of enhancing immigrant integration by increasing school children’s Danish language proficiency is studied. The assumption was that by removing supplementary mother tongue education, the focus on learning the Danish language would be strengthened. The results, however, rather show negative effects of the reform, as the removal led to lower grades in Danish, thus the results support the argument that mother-tongue proficiency matters for second language acquisition.Common findings in all studies included in this dissertation are the large group differences in terms of results. For immigrants who originate from countries that are more culturally and geographically proximate to Denmark, naturalization and intermarriage are less important as integration tools. These groups already tend to be economically and socially integrated in Danish society, and they seem to be less in need of an additional boost from changing citizenship or marrying a Dane. Instead groups with more distant countries of origin are benefitingfrom intermarriage and naturalization. Children of intermarriage indeed tend to perform better in school than children belonging to the second generation of immigrants, and their performance is more in line with the performance of native Danes. But when taking parental heterogeneity into account differences emerge, and children with a non-native parent originating from a country more culturally and geographically distant from Denmark, tend to have an educational performance more in line with the second generation of immigrants.

▼ The interdisciplinary literature on gender, intermarriage, and transnational migration has often compared the social phenomenon of intra-Asia marriage migration with either the transnational marriages of mail-order brides or with the gendered migration of live-in care workers, with a strong tendency to examine its negative consequences for marriage migrants who choose to migrate from poorer to richer countries within Asia through transnational marriages. To date, however, we have limited understanding of the determinants of marriage migrants' wellbeing in the marriage and migration processes. To further examine the positive social and health consequences of intra-Asia marriage migration, this dissertation uses the National Survey on Multicultural Families in South Korea (N=69,394), forty-eight in-depth interviews, and a year of multi-sited fieldwork working with sixteen migrant organizations in both rural and urban settings, to answer one major research question: how do transnational marriage and gendered migration affect the wellbeing of Asian women migrants in Taiwan and South Korea? I found that gender dynamics, socioeconomic status, and social integration are three key and interconnected determinants of marriage migrants' health and wellbeing. Specifically, marital power dynamics between marriage migrants and their husbands have a direct effect on marriage migrants' self-rated health, life satisfaction, and views on marriage migration; marriage migrants' exposure to gender-based bias affects their propensity to marry across borders through different channels, while the flexibility of gender structure in the marital families is critical in marriage migrants' double transition of becoming married women and becoming migrants. On the one hand, the socioeconomic status of marital families is more important to marriage migrants' self-rated health and life satisfaction than the education of their husbands. On the other hand, the social standing of natal families reveals little effect on marriage migrants' post-migration wellbeing, yet marriage migrants' own education has a reverse effect on how they value the experience of transnational marriage migration. In terms of the various dimensions of social integration, social relationships with the native populations affect marriage migrants' health in a positive way, yet social relationships with co-ethnics turn out to influence their health negatively. Overall, marriage migrants' gendered social roles – as wives, daughters-in-law, and mothers – in the marital families allow them to better negotiate their individual agency, which is defined as their ability to act independently and make free choices. The sense of belonging gained through participating in these family roles serves as a strong foundation for marriage migrants to further integrate into the host societies as migrant groups through taking on social roles as community members and citizens. ▼ This thesis investigates intermarriages between ethnic Khmer and Kinh people in a province of southern Vietnam. Khmer-Kinh interethnic marriage raises paradoxes, for the very possibility of such unions is sometimes questioned owing to the socio-economic gaps and assumed differences in cultural practices between these groups, their historical tension, and mutually unfavourable stereotypes. Nevertheless, this type of marriage is real and has been increasing in recent years. This thesis aims to explore the facilitating factors behind this type of marriage; how Khmer-Kinh couples experience their relationship with each-other and with their families; and how ethnic identity is transmitted to the children of such unions. It demonstrates that Khmer and Kinh couples engage in a dynamic process of negotiating multiple constraints and adapting to differences to make their marriages viable. This thesis draws upon in-depth interviews and observations from a field study undertaken by the author in 2012 in An Giang Province. Thirty-five Khmer-Kinh interethnic couples took part in the study that examined marriages in rural and urban areas as well as ethnically segregated and ethnically mixed settings. The participants were drawn from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and included couples made up of individuals of similar and dissimilar socio-economic standing. The findings highlight that geographical and socioeconomic disparities are significant barriers to Khmer-Kinh interethnic marriage. Historical tensions also have led to the development of pejorative stereotypes between the ethnic groups, which significantly impede the formation of such intimate unions. The findings unpack the complex factors and conditions facilitating the incidence of Khmer-Kinh interethnic marriage, highlighting the significance of modernization and development factors in bridging the geographical, social, cultural and psychological gaps between groups, and the role of new marriage markets and personal experiences in facilitating such conjugal unions. By examining couples’ relationship with each-other and with their families, I found two core factors—class disparity and cultural differences—account for many of the tensions and conflicts arising in their marital life. The findings also highlight the differential capacity of spouses and their families to cope with cultural differences. Educational level, residential location, ethnicity, gender expectations and practical utility were influential factors shaping the capacity of spouses to cope with the cultural differences encountered in their married lives. With the implementation of economic reforms, opening-up, and family planning policies, China has experienced profound socioeconomic and cultural changes since the 1970s. One of the significant changes is the increase in the number of people migrating within China and to other countries to pursue better opportunities for employment, education, life style, or marriage. With China’s economic success in recent decades, its internal and international migration has continued to increase while the number of international marriages experienced considerable fluctuation, and sometimes decline, over time. Although international marriage as a social phenomenon in China has attracted much attention, due to the lack of available data, knowledge of international marriage has been fragmented in the existing literature. Using a set of consolidated data of international and domestic marriage registration, supplemented by face-to-face interview data, this thesis investigates the nature of international marriage in mainland China by focusing on demographic reality and life experiences of couples in international marriage. The thesis first analyses the macro mechanisms and diverse geospatial patterns of international marriage in China and charts the connections between internal and international marriage and migration. The thesis then examines the demographic similarities and differentials between two types of marriage choices, and their effects on the formation and solidarity of the union for couples in both domestic and international marriages. The thesis also examines the premium of relative advantage between spouses and gendered differences of marriage choices. In addition, the analysis is supplemented by ethnographical data that provide insights into couples’ personal interpretation of their marriage and divorce, as well as their connections to social and institutional environment. The results suggest that marriage, including international marriage, has been affected by a number of institutional, structural, and individual factors, such as socioeconomic conditions, rural-urban disparities, gender norms, marriage behaviour, socioeconomic status, and personal experiences.
