▼ The issues of intergenerational relations are sparking international interests in recent year given various social transformations such as rapid aging, declining family size, altered workforce structures, and increasing geographic distance between family members. The knowledge of the patterns of intergenerational interactions and the sustainability of informal care will provide useful insights for policy-makers and social work practitioners seeking to meet the needs of increasing eldercare. ❧ The principle aim of this dissertation research is to add to the existing knowledge about intergenerational relations by investigating the dynamics of the relationships between older parents and their adult children who live in rural China. Using longitudinal data from a group of Chinese elders in rural Anhui province, China, this dissertation research had the following specific aims: 1) to investigate the changing patterns of care provided by Chinese adult children to their parents between 2001 and 2009 and to examine the sources of heterogeneity in the changes, 2) to examine the concept of intergenerational ambivalence among China’s rural older population and to examine the predictors of such ambivalent feelings, and 3) to examine the underlying patterns of parent–child relations among Chinese rural elders and their children. ❧ The findings of this dissertation research identified both similar and different patterns of intergenerational relations in rural China as compared to those in western societies. The first study revealed that Chinese sons increased their support to aging parents over the 8-year period whereas daughters decreased the amount of parental care over time. The changing patterns were mainly affected by parents’ functional capacity and the geographic proximity from the children. Other predictors of the care trajectories included children’s current life circumstances and the alternative care provided by other siblings in the family. The second study showed that a sizable percentage (12%) of parent-child ties in the study was characterized by ambivalent relationships. Chinese rural elders reported a greater level of ambivalence toward sons than toward daughters, and such feelings increased under conditions of children’s potential dependence on their parents. A lower socio-economic status of adult children in terms of being a farmer and/or having a rural household registration status were also associated with a higher level of ambivalent feelings reported by parents. The third study revealed five types of intergenerational relations in rural China: 1) tight-knit, 2) nearby but discordant, 3) distant and discordant, 4) distant reciprocal, and 5) distant ascending. Among them, “distant reciprocal” is a unique pattern different from respective findings of western studies. ▼ Motivated by the current trends of rapid population aging and increasing gender equality in education in China, this dissertation examines how extended family relationships influence marital power dynamics and how marital power dynamics influence intergenerational relationships using data from the China Family Panel Studies. Chapter 1 examines how intergenerational coresidence modifies the association between wives’ education and their decision-making power. Past research on household decision-making has focused on nuclear families and rarely considered extended households. This paper finds that wives’ education increases the probability of their having the final say in nuclear households but not in extended households where they live with their parents-in-law. These findings underscore the importance of examining how intergenerational relationships may influence wives’ decision-making power at home. Chapter 2 examines whether wives’ and husbands’ parental education is associated with wives’ decision-making power, net of wives’ and husbands’ education. Past research on household decision-making has focused on the husband-wife dyad and rarely considered the role of extended family members. This paper finds that wives’ parental education is positively associated with the probability of wives having the final say, net of the education of wives, husbands, and husbands’ parents. However, this association decreases as husbands’ parental education increases. These findings demonstrate that marital relationships are embedded in extended family relationships. Educational attainment in one generation may have a lingering impact on the marital power of the next generation. Chapter 3 examines how the wife’s education modifies the association between the husband being the only son and the couple’s living arrangements. Past research on intergenerational coresidence has focused on parent-child dyads and rarely considered how the wives of adult male children influence living arrangement decisions. This paper finds that among couples in which the husband is the only son, education enables rural women to opt out of coresidence with their parents-in-law and enables urban women to live with their own parents. These findings demonstrate that marital power dynamics have important implications for intergenerational relationships. Together, this dissertation contributes to our understanding of the interaction between marital power dynamics and intergenerational relationships in contemporary China. ▼ In the context of population aging, growing scholarly attention has been paid to intergenerational relations between seniors and their adult children. However, with increasing proportions of the senior population being foreign born, scholars of family gerontology and immigrant scholars have not joined forces to study intergenerational relations in later-life immigrant families. This dissertation addresses this gap in the literature by examining nativity differences in three aspects of intergenerational relations: living arrangements, intergenerational economic support, and grandchild care. Using pooled data from Canadian censuses and the National Household Survey (NHS), the first analytical chapter finds that, from 1981 to 2011, the higher propensity for immigrant seniors to coreside with their adult children compared to Canadian-born seniors continued to increase. A regression decomposition approach further reveals that the most important factor underlying these temporal trends is shifting immigrant source regions towards countries where intergenerational coresidence is more of a norm. Focusing on coresidential households, the second analytical chapter finds diverse patterns of intergenerational economic support based on nativity status of both elderly parents and adult children and on race. These patterns are explained by compositional differences in demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of adult children more than by those characteristics of elderly parents. Finally, the third analytical chapter examines nativity differences in occasional and regular grandchild care using the General Social Survey (GSS) Cycle 21 and Cycle 25. Immigrant grandfathers with immigrant adult children are less likely to assist with any grandchild care compared to Canadian-born grandfathers, but no nativity difference is found among grandmothers. In addition, compared to those in Canadian-born families, immigrant adult children have lower odds of regularly using child care by grandparents versus using parental care only. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the importance of adding a family perspective to studies on immigrant seniors and the importance of ascertaining the underlying factors of nativity differences in intergenerational relations. INTRODUÇÃO: o ambiente familiar tem sido amplamente relacionado ao uso de álcool na literatura. No entanto, poucos estudos abordam esta questão especificamente para famílias de mulheres alcoolistas. Neste trabalho procurou-se comparar aspectos do funcionamento familiar ao longo de três gerações: geração atual (companheiros e filhos), geração dos pais e irmãos e geração dos avós paternos e maternos de mulheres dependentes e não dependentes de álcool, a partir de seus próprios relatos. MÉTODOS: foram estudadas 30 mulheres alcoolistas que frequentavam o Programa de Atenção à Mulher Dependente Química (PROMUD) do Instituto de Psiquiatria do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo e 32 mulheres não alcoolistas que frequentavam o ambulatório de ginecologia geral do Departamento de Tocoginecologia do Hospital das Clínicas de Curitiba. Como instrumentos foram utilizados a construção do genograma familiar e a Family Environment Scale (FES). RESULTADOS: com relação aos dados sociodemográficos, as alcoolistas eram mais velhas, possuíam maior grau de escolaridade, um número menor de mulheres tinha companheiros e elas tinham menos filhos em comparação às mulheres do grupo controle. Observaram-se várias diferenças com relação à estrutura familiar sempre demonstrando que as famílias das alcoolistas são mais disfuncionais. Com relação às alianças, as alcoolistas possuíam alianças disfuncionais em vários pares de familiares: conflito com a mãe, companheiro e avô paterno, superenvolvimento com o pai e foi verificada a presença de conflito conjugal em todas as gerações. As famílias das alcoolistas se configuraram como superenvolvidas, com presença de triangulação, abuso físico, psicológico e/ou sexual e divórcio. O uso abusivo de álcool foi encontrado também nas mães e companheiros destas mulheres. As mães possuíam ainda o poder de decisão nestas famílias. Ao relacionar o momento de início do uso abusivo com as fases do ciclo de vida familiar, percebeu-se que as mulheres iniciaram o abuso de álcool com seus companheiros e quando os filhos eram pequenos ou adolescentes. Os resultados da FES mostraram diferença nas subescalas coesão, expressividade, conflito, organização e religião entre os grupos, sempre mostrando maior disfunção nas famílias das alcoolistas. CONCLUSÕES: estes achados reforçam a hipótese de que as famílias das mulheres alcoolistas são mais disfuncionais em vários aspectos e que muitos destes padrões disfuncionais são transmitidos ao longo das gerações.

▼ This dissertation aimed to explain how the various contexts of family and generation membership, religious affiliation and religiosity, and historical period, shape the degree to which adult children feel obligated to, and actually support, their aging parents. More specifically, the objectives were: (1) to examine change across the lifespan in the strength with which individuals feel adult children should be committed to parental care; (2) to examine how parents influence the amount of support they will receive in old age from their adult children; (3) to examine patterns of congruence or discrepancy between filial obligation to parental care and actual filial behavior of parental care; and (4) to investigate the role of religiosity in predicting such patterns. Analyses were performed using data from the USC Longitudinal Study of Generations (LSOG) – a multi-wave multi-level four generation study. Multi-level growth curve analysis from the first study (N = 4,527 time-varying observations over four time points of 1,627 individuals from 333 families) showed that filial norms are malleable and change over the adult lifespan. Filial norms peak at midlife and weaken in old age, especially after the death of both parents, when generational succession takes place. Structural equation models from the second study (N = 379 mother-child dyads) demonstrated that parents might shape their children's supportive behavior through various mechanisms including strong emotional bonds, demonstration of the desired caring behavior earlier in life, and exchange mechanisms. Latent class analyses in the third study (N = 475) demonstrated that a discrepant pattern of dissonant individuals – reporting strong obligations yet low actual levels of support – was most prevalent (52%).; The remaining subjects divide equally into two opposing types of congruent patterns: the uninvolved – those reporting weak norms and low levels of care, and the committed supporters – those reporting strong commitment and high levels of support. Multinomial regressions analyses showed that non-religious adult children were almost three times more likely to be non committed to, and uninvolved in, parental care. Taken together, this dissertation demonstrated that intergenerational processes such as commitment to parental care and actual care should be studied within micro-and macro-level contexts over time. In particular, the thesis set out to explore older and younger peoples’ perceptions and experiences of ageing and consider this in light of dominant discourses on ageing. The thesis explores intergenerational interactions and expectations of each other in relation to ageing and arrangements, or plans to deal with ageing. For many people ageing is a shared intergenerational journey, yet this is an underexplored area of research in Australia and is why the focus of this study is important. The study involves in-depth narrative interviews with 13 participants over the age of 70, along with 13 significant people each selected from a younger generation. This qualitative study explores how ageing is socially constructed, understood, experienced, planned and negotiated, between older and younger generations. It explores lived experiences of ageing and intergenerational relations, whilst taking into account institutional narratives, which for the most part paint ageing as a problem and claims that there are significant inequities and division between older and younger generations. This thesis has been theoretically and methodologically framed to allow participants considerable scope to discuss what was important to them. The study was underpinned by social constructionism, postmodernism, narrative inquiry, Foucauldian ideas and critical social work. Societal dominant negative discourses about ageing and intergenerational relations are not supported by the findings in this thesis. Instead of divisions and inequities between generations, this study has revealed high levels of intergenerational commitment, loyalty, reciprocity and concern for each other. Ageing is very much a shared intergenerational journey. When it comes to planning for ageing, there is no one size that fits all. In some cases making formal or informal plans is useful, whilst in other cases it can increase risk or result in family conflict. Making specific plans for healthcare appears much more complex and unpredictable than what is promoted and advertised in popular planning tools. Intergenerational relations are central to how older people think about making plans. Older participants are particularly concerned that governments have not initiated more creative options in relation to care and accommodation and have instead turned to expensive market solutions. Later life for many participants is a time of much opportunity; a time to pursue lifelong interests and ongoing learning, and a time of being busy and productive well into later years. Participants experienced great respect within their families, close networks, local communities and with their GPs, and were much more likely to encounter ageism in the context of institutions, such as in government and media discourses about ageing and when interacting with healthcare institutions and residential aged care…

▼ Using data from the 1979-80 Asian Marriage Survey, this dissertation examines the determinants of the timing and arrangement of marriages for both men and women in Central Java. Trends in marriage patterns and their relationship to family background, education, pre-marital work and pre-marital residence are examined with a particular focus on gender differences. It is argued that the current marriage transition in Indonesia is reflective of both gender and generational hierarchies in the Javanese family system. While family and status concerns motivate parents to control the marriage choice and timing of both sons and daughters, the extent of this control over daughters is greater due to an additional concern for their sexual purity. Moreover, even as family organization and marriage processes respond to the spread of Westernization, schooling and a wage economy with a declining control of the old over the young, this process is substantially different for men and women. The analysis of the determinants of spouse choice patterns is conducted using a multinomial logit model while an event history approach is used in the analysis of marriage timing. The major findings are that while age at marriage is rising only modestly for women, there are no clear trends for their husbands. On the other hand, there is a dramatic increase in self-choice for both men and women. Even as the younger generation is gaining substantially more independence in marriage decisions, however, parents continue to play an important role in the marriage process. Moreover, while marriages are more conjugally oriented and the couple's concerns have gained prominence, family concerns continue to be a relevant and important focus. Women marry earlier than men, with less flexibility and less decision-making input. The determinants of marriage timing and spouse selection also differ by gender. Status concerns, ideological and normative issues are especially relevant for women while physical and economic independence is more relevant for the men. This is indicated by the fact that class background and education are generally more important predictors of women's marriage patterns while pre-marital work and residence are more important for the men. These differentials are less evident in rural areas, however, particularly with regard to marriage timing. The results suggest that the conception of work as a pre-condition for men to marry may be more relevant in urban rather than rural areas where obligations to or from parents may be the more critical issue for both men and women. ▼ Abstract: This ethnography examines the intertwining of social markers such as aging, middle age, old age, sexuality, homoeroticism and intergenerational relations. The central goal is to understand how the experiences of aging and sexuality later in life are narrated by men who use websites that provide homoerotic interactions. To this end - and based on a qualitative methodology involving in-depth interviews, "on line" and "off line" informal conversations as well as participant observation - the following questions were explored: a) the management of social categories associated to mature men with homoerotic sexual practices; b) the narrative construction of temporal and generational sensibilities; c) the ways in which positive models of aging among men with homoerotic sexual practices and / or that identify themselves as homosexual have been gestated; d) the perceptions concerning the socio-spatial transformations regarding homosexual practices and identities in recent decades and, finally, e) the management of the social support networks in the aging processes of these individuals. The universe studied is composed of men who, in most cases, considered themselves as middle class, white, with a moderately high educational background, deeply involved in on line interactions, which have between 45 and 70 years old and live in São Paulo. For these men on line interactions have impacted in a positive way. These interactions were narrated as enabling significant new friendships and erotic relationships. O aumento do número de idosos na população e a maior longevidade geram maiores oportunidades de convivência desse contingente populacional com crianças. Desde o início da vida as crianças desenvolvem atitudes em relação à velhice e aos idosos com quem convivem. A percepção que progressivamente constroem se baseia nestes relacionamentos e sofrem influência de diversos fatores. Objetivou-se avaliar a atitude em relação à velhice de crianças que moram com idosos com e sem alterações cognitivas e verificar a percepção das mesmas sobre demência/ Doença de Alzheimer (DA). O estudo baseou-se no método quantiqualitativo de investigação e os cuidados éticos foram observados. Foram entrevistadas 54 crianças, de 7 a 10 anos de idade, cadastradas em cinco diferentes Unidades de Saúde da Família de um município paulista e que moravam com pelo menos um idoso. As crianças foram entrevistadas, aplicando-se questionário de caracterização, Escala de Atitudes em Relação à Velhice para Crianças e questões relativas ao envelhecimento e demência/DA. Para os idosos que moravam com as crianças (n=46) foi realizada a caracterização e aplicado o Mini-Exame do Estado Mental (MEEM). Os dados quantitativos foram analisados estatisticamente e os qualitativos por meio da análise temática. A maioria das crianças era do sexo masculino, tinha nove anos, estava na 4 série do Ensino Fundamental e era neta do idoso com o qual morava. A média das crianças na escala de atitudes foi 1,59 pontos, sendo que um ponto representa a atitude mais positiva possível e três pontos a mais negativa. Os idosos eram em sua maioria do sexo feminino, entre 60 e 64 anos e com pontuação média no MEEM de 20,4 pontos. A maioria das crianças (53,7%) mora com idosos sem alterações cognitivas. Foi encontrada diferença significativa nos domínios cognição e relacionamento social da escala de atitude quando comparados os grupos de crianças que moram com idosos com e sem alterações cognitivas, sendo que as que moram com idosos com alterações cognitivas possuem atitudes mais negativas nestes domínios. Em relação às questões abertas, as mudanças na aparência física e no modo de pensar foram destacadas como inerentes ao envelhecimento. Também se destacou a perda de memória do idoso com quem a criança mora. A grande maioria das crianças não possuía conhecimento sobre a demência/DA. Profissionais de saúde na atenção básica devem estar atentos às famílias multigeracionais, e no âmbito do Programa Saúde da Família investir em estratégias de educação gerontológica

▼ A dissertação de mestrado subordinada ao tema das Relações Intergeracionais e as Sociedades Envelhecidas surgiu, no âmbito do Mestrado em Educação Social e Intervenção Comunitária, da Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa e teve como ponto de partida saber se a participação em actividades intergeracionais promove o envelhecimento ativo de 8 mulheres com 65 e mais anos, residentes num território multigeracional de Lisboa Oriental. A abordagem concetual do envelhecimento social, do envelhecimento ativo, das relações intergeracionais e da participação conduziu o estudo, através da triangulação dos instrumentos de análise qualitativa de entrevistas de histórias de vida e de focus group. As mulheres entrevistadas têm entre 65 e 85 anos de idade cronológica, mas em média dizem sentir que têm menos 34 anos. Afirmam, ser jovens de espirito e por isso preferem ser chamadas de seniores. Manifestam que sempre foram e são, mulheres autónomas, livres, independentes, com poder de decisão, com auto-estima elevada e com qualidade de vida. Mulheres que ocupam o tempo em actividades da vida diária, em actividades de tempos livres, e voluntariado. Mulheres reivindicativas, proativas, frontais e determinadas que assumem um papel social ativo envolvendo-se socialmente em todas as actividades produtivas ou orientadas para a performance e em actividades colectivas e ou orientadas para a união, com vista alcançar objetivos comuns. Mulheres, que ganham prestígio e estatuto na comunidade por se envolverem socialmente no processo de tomadas de decisão, organização, execução e avaliação, com as gerações mais novas. São visionárias ancestrais de espirito jovem que abrem novas portas para a construção social da velhice nas sociedades neoliberais e desafiam os humanistas quando afirmam que as atividades produtivas na velhice dão sentido à própria existência. São histórias de mulheres que nos fazem acreditar que a participação social contribui espontaneamente para o diálogo entre as gerações, em todas as fases da vida. - Abstract A dissertation on the subject of Intergenerational Relationships and Societies Aged emerged within the Master of Education Social and Community Intervention, School of Education and Lisbon had as starting point whether participation promotes intergenerational activities on aging 8 active women aged 65 years and older, residing in the territory of Eastern Lisbon multigenerational. The conceptual approach of social aging, active aging, intergenerational relations and participation conducted the study through triangulation of instruments qualitative analysis of interviews and life stories focus group. The women interviewed are between 65 and 85 years of chronological age, but on average say they feel they are under 34 years old. They claim to be young in spirit and so they prefer to be called seniors. Demonstrate that have always been and are women autonomous, free, independent, decision-making, self-esteem and quality of life.
