▼ Disfluencies in speech are attributed to problems speakers encounter at the planning level. However, it is not yet known if they are produced with a purpose. We reviewed a theory proposed by Herbert Clark, which assumes that disfluencies are intentionally produced by the speaker to signal such problems to the listener. To do so, we investigated if the speaker’s inability to attend to the listener lead to a reduction in disfluency. We employed a dual task paradigm that would theoretically reduce the speaker’s ability to attend to their listener. Although our experimental manipulation was not effective, analysis using mixed effects models demonstrated that participants were no more likely to be disfluent if they were also attending to their listener or not. We concluded that disfluencies are not intentionally produced, but also note that our design requires modification before we can assert our conclusion’s validity.

▼ In May 2015, the Washington Post published an article titled: Uncle Sam Had Better Start Treating His Employees Right. The articles title captures the essence of the status of human capital in the federal government. Currently, the federal bureaucracy is faced with the potential threat of losing talented workforce due to budget constraints (Wynen & Op de Beeck, 2014), work environments ( Choi, 2009; S.H. Kim, 2005; S.Y. Lee & Whitford, 2008; Lee & Jimenez, 2011), and human resource management practices ( S.H. Kim, 2005; Moyihan & Landuyt, 2008; Shaw, Delery, Jenkins, & Gupta, 1998; Lee & Jimenez, 2011). The potential exit of human capital poses a severe threat to recruiting and retaining the best and the brightest workers. Also, to make the federal government labor force situation worse, many federal workers are now eligible for retirement. Ertas (2015) refers to a report published in 2010 that states that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) reported by 2015 that 48% of the federal workforce will be eligible for retirement (Partnership for Public Service & Booz Allen Hamilton, 2010, p. 5). With the aforementioned factors, federal agencies cannot afford to have employees exit. The departure of workers adversely impacts expertise in the organization and productivity, and costs agencies a substantial amount of money (Grissom, Nicolson-Crotty, & Keiser, 2012; Kellough & Osuna, 1995; Lambert & Hogan, 2009; Monnihan & Landuyt, 2008; Wynen & Op de Beeck, 2014). This study utilizes the personal viewpoint of current employees from the large federal agencies to develop a model that will assist federal agencies to identify factors that will encourage employees intent to stay with their organization and have long, lasting careers in the federal service. This study employs the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey.

In front of the increasing environmental problems that threaten human life, the question of the involvement of all mankind in the protection of the environment is strongly emphasized. At the managerial level and in the recent years, academic researchers have emphasized the need to change perceptions, values, attitudes, intentions and behavior leading to an environmental organization.By placing our research in the field of psychology of sustainable development, the subject of this thesis is to develop a model explaining the history of environmental leadership for industrial SMEs. Thus, based on the theory of planned behavior and entrepreneurial orientation, we propose a conceptual model showing the impact of contextual (political, cultural and economic) and individual variables (personal characteristics) on the formation of the environmental intention of SMEs managers. The empirical approach is similar to a process of methodological triangulation. It consists in a qualitative exploratory study nearly twenty SME, followed by a second qualitative study almost ten experts in sustainable development and CSR. Finally, a quantitative study…

▼ Understanding information technology and its related products and services is increasingly important because the everyday use of technology continues to expand and broaden. Despite this need for greater understanding, the extant theories that explore the dominant factors that drive
intention to use a new technology are limited. The Technology Acceptancy Model (TAM) is the most popular model in explaining traditional technology adoption. The limitations of the TAM in grasping the overall evaluation of technology or service are one of motivations for developing new models in this dissertation. The two antecedents of the TAM- perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use- only capture partial utility of a service (or product). In addition, some researchers argued that key factors used in an initial acceptance model such as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use are not strong predictors of future continuance
intention of the service because
they do not consider future switching
intention in the later stage. Hence, one goal of this dissertation is to develop and test new models to predict factors that drive
intention and continuance
intention decisions of new technology related products or services. This research involves three studies that examine different aspects of adoption and continuance
intention decisions of new technology-related products or services. Essay 1 posits and empirically tests a new model that examines service vendor quality, service outcome quality, and trust as drivers of cloud-based services by adopting the frameworks from marketing, behavior
intention and information technology research. The model is referred to as the quality trust model (QTM). The quality of cloud-based services involves the quality of vendors and the quality of service outcomes; its effectiveness is mirrored by trust of the services. Data from an online survey of 355 respondents were used to test the research model. The results
show that vendor quality and outcome quality influence trust, which is positively correlated with
intention. However, vendor quality appears less salient than outcome quality in motivating usage of cloud-based services. We discussed the implications of the model and findings for practitioners searching for solutions in driving user participation, as well as for academics fascinated with a deeper understanding of roles of quality and trust in an individual level of decision-making behavior. Essay 2 posits and develops a model that includes the influences of reliability and flexibility on service quality, and influences of service quality on consumer perceived benefits and satisfaction, which consequently influences continuance
intention of cloud services. The model explained 50% of satisfaction, which consequently explained 58% of continuance
intention. We also examined the mediated effects among key drivers and validated the prominence of service quality in the IS continuance
intention model. We delivered implications for academia and practice. Essay 3 unifies two theoretical frameworks a…

▼ Much research has been conducted into the ways that listeners make use of disfluencies in a speech stream. Conversely, there has been very little work conducted on the production of disfluencies. One particularly under researched question is whether disfluencies are an epiphenomenon of speech production problems (e.g. Oomen & Postma, 2001) or if they are used intentionally to signal upcoming delays or to comment on some facet of the speech stream (e.g. Clark & Fox Tree, 2002). Additionally, there has been suggestion that disfluencies do not act as a homogeneous group and might perform different functions within an utterance (e.g. Bortfeld et al. 2001). We perform an exploratory study which begins to investigate these claims by manipulating both Performance (epiphenomenon) and Competence (intentional usage) related factors within a controlled experimental environment. The results of this experiment are indexed by disfluency type to allow between type comparisons. Twenty Four participants undertook the experiment and produced a total of 1344 spontaneously generated but roughly formulaic utterances for analysis. Our main finding that Performance factors can increase the usage of certain types of disfluency (a) expands on previous findings that Performance factors can be manipulated experimentally, and (b) suggests that disfluencies should be treated individually rather than as a homogenous group. We find little support for the intentional use of any form of disfluency within this experiment.

▼ The objective of this study is to examine entrepreneurial
intention and determinants. Specifically, the study tried to examine the impact of Gender, Family background, Social norm, Entrepreneurship education, perceived government policy and Perceived access to finance to entrepreneurial
intention of university students in Addis Ababa.
The quantitative approach was employed as research design. Simple Random sampling technique was used to draw sample from population. Data was collected though questionnaire and collected data was analysised through descriptive statistics, independent t-test and correlation analysis.
The significant difference in entrepreneurial
intention was found between male and female students, and also between students from business family background and non business family background. The significant difference in entrepreneurial
intention was not found between students those had took entrepreneurship education and those had not taken entrepreneurship education. The result indicated that there is significant positive relationship exist between Social norm and entrepreneurial
intention. The result indicated that there is not significant positive relationship exist between perceived access to finance and entrepreneurial
intention and also the result indicated that there is not significant positive relationship exist between perceived government policy and entrepreneurial
intention.
There was no study conducted in Ethiopia relating to entrepreneurial
intention and its determinants. In order to fill this gap, a sample of university students in Addis Ababa was investigated.

In order to understand what leads individuals to create new ventures, entrepreneurship researchers use intention models in their studies for decades. The most famous are the Theory of Planned Behavior of Azjen and the Entrepreneurial Event of Shapero and Sokol. However, these models are still perfectible. In fact, they stem from the fact that intentions predict behaviors, but only less than half of variance of entrepreneurial behaviors is explained by intention. Moreover, intention models only focus on the antecedents of intention. So the motivational part (why one acts) is addressed, but the volitional part (how to pursue actions) remains set aside. Our thesis, composed of four pieces of work, aims at addressing this gap in order to improve our understanding of the entrepreneurial process. Our objective is to shed light on facilitators that can lead from intentions to effective action. We thus took on the challenge of…

▼ This work concerns some connections between motivation and representation in practical and theoretical reasoning. A version of the claim that
intention involves belief is defended. We find two normative attitudes that stand in the same sort of involvement relation to
intention that
intention stands in to belief. The first, called moral endorsement, is a moral judgement attitude that is distinct from moral belief, which does not involve
intention. The second, called rational commitment, arises when we investigate the prospects for an inferential view of logical connectives such as `\emph{if...then}.' We show that accepting an inference rule is not to be identified with assenting to its instances (or being disposed to), and that the best attempt at developing this suggestion leads to a principle connecting accepting an inference rule with rational commitment.

▼ Entrepreneurial
intention has become perhaps the fastest growing line in entrepreneurship cognition research. Such inquiries of
intention-based models generally focus on answering and predicting why an individual makes his/her decision to be an entrepreneur. However, a few limitations inspired the researcher, such as the antecedents of intentions and opportunity evaluation in front-end factors and nascent activities in back-end factors, which were excluded in past studies. In terms of entrepreneurship opportunities, this research suggests that the new paradigm could answer the following questions: Firstly, what are the main factors that influence the intentions of nascent entrepreneurs after entering the implementation stage? Secondly, why do they strive for entrepreneurial goals by means of various actions? Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), the research focuses on nascent entrepreneurs, examining the roles of concrete entrepreneurial opportunities and nascent activities in an existing
intention-based model. How can an
intention-action model with both predicting and explaining abilities be created?
The sample poll was from the participants of an entrepreneurship plan financially sponsored by the Taiwan government. This work confirmed that the voluntary sample was consistent with nascent entrepreneurs and was opportunity-based. Deleting those lacking opportunities or with missing data resulted in 207 usable responses, and then, the qualitative research of 19 participants from participant observation or in-depth interviews was conducted. By way of such a multimethod analysis, the results show that the âattitude toward entrepreneurial opportunity,â entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and perceived social norms are the main factors influencing entrepreneurial intentions. Besides, intentions and entrepreneurial self-efficacy dominate and influence the nascent entrepreneursâ activities to reach the entrepreneurial goals.
Finally, this research identifies two research approaches: one is âTo Beâ and the other is âTo Act.â The latter forms a more explaining and predictable opportunity-based âentrepreneurial
intention-action model.â The stakeholders of entrepreneurial policy will face the challenges of how to improve the âattitude toward entrepreneurial opportunityâ and how to inspire the further actions of nascent entrepreneurs.

In this thesis, a methodological and algorithmic approach is proposed, for visual intention recognition based on the rotation and the vertical motion of the head and the hand. The context for which this solution is intended is that of people with disabilities whose mobility is made possible by a wheelchair. The proposed system is an interesting alternative to classical interfaces such as joysticks and pneumatic switches. The video sequence comprising 10 frames is processed using different methods leading to the construction of what is referred to in this thesis as an “intention curve”. A decision rule is proposed to subsequently classify each intention curve. For…

▼ Psychologists have long been concerned with the well-being of people and how it can be achieved. There are various routes to well-being, for example, via pleasure, engagement, accomplishment and meaning. This study focuses on the second route to well-being, namely engagement in the work context, and specifically the relation thereof to work-life interference. Interference of employees’ work with their home and home with work is an important factor impacting their work engagement. This is specifically evident when the work and home are far apart. The general objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between work-life interference, psychological conditions, employee engagement and turnover intention in a uranium mine in Namibia. A quantitative study was conducted. More specifically a survey design was used. The participants were 292 employees of a uranium mine in the Namib Desert (in Namibia) residing in towns between 70 and 90 kilometres from their workplace. The following measuring instruments were used: Survey Work–Home Interference-Nijmegen, Psychological Conditions Scale, Work Engagement Questionnaire, and the Turnover Intention Scale. The statistical analysis was carried out with the SPSS 19.0 program. Exploratory factor analyses were used to assess the construct validity of the measuring instruments. The reliability of the measuring instruments was assessed by means of Cronbach alpha coefficients. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the effects of work-life interference on employee engagement and turnover intention. Mediation analyses were used to determine indirect effects. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between work-life interference and work engagement within the employees at the mine. Negative work-life interference (work-home/home-work spillover) was negatively related to psychological meaningfulness, psychological availability, and work engagement. The opposite was found regarding positive work-life interference (work-home/home-work spillover) as it was positively related to psychological meaningfulness, psychological availability, work engagement, and is negatively related to turnover intention. What was also apparent in the study is that psychological meaningfulness and psychological availability mediated the relationship between negative and positive interferences and work engagement, and turnover intention.

▼ To overcome the threat of overweight/obesity in adolescents, theory-based inter-ventions promoting physical activity (PA) participation have been widely advanced. Pro-tection motivation theory (PMT) has been moderately effective in the prediction of health-related behavior. Implementation intention (a volitional strategy) interventions have been successful in changing a range of health behaviors. This study examined the impacts of PMT-based motivational intervention and implementation intention-based vo-litional interventions on PMT constructs, PA intention and behavior. The study also com-pared the cognitions of PMT constructs, PA intention and behavior between over-weight/obese adolescents and normal weight adolescents. Finally, the study tested the predictive strength of PMT constructs on PA intention and behavior among adolescents.A total of 330 junior high school students were assigned to either a control group or one of the two experimental conditions: motivational intervention or a motivational plus volitional intervention. Motivational intervention included reading a leaflet about overweight/obesity and the effects of PA on preventing the threat. Volitional intervention involved asking participants to plan when and where they would participate in PA. Partic-ipants’ PMT constructs, PA intention and behavior were measured at three time-points over a four-week period.ivMANOVA with repeated measure yielded a nonsignificant main effect for inter-ventions on PMT constructs, PA intention and behavior, whereas a significant main effect for weight category on PMT constructs, intention and behavior was detected. Follow-up tests indicated that overweight/obese adolescents reported significantly higher perceived vulnerability and response cost, and lower self-efficacy, physical activity intention, and behavior than normal weight adolescents did. Hierarchical regression revealed that the entire PMT model accounted for 14% of variance in PA behavior. Specifically, intention, perceived vulnerability, and response cost were significant predictors of PA behavior. Additionally, PMT constructs explained 40% of variance in intention. Self-efficacy and response cost emerged as significant predictors of intention. The findings indicated that compared to the control group the interventions were not effective in promoting adolescents’ PA intention and behavior. However, the evi-dence for the utility of PMT in predicting PA intention and behavior among adolescents was provided. Overweight/obese adolescents need to enhance their self-efficacy and re-duce their perceptions of PA costs.

▼ It has always been the interest of our government to promote entrepreneurship and new venture in business as
a mean to enhance economic growth for the nation and creating jobs to help to solve the problem of
unemployment. There are many university graduates that are languishing at home. Not all graduates are
equal in the fierce battle for jobs.
This study aimed to examine the impact of entrepreneurial education, role model and attitude on students’
entrepreneurial intentions in Addis Ababa University and also to determine the motivators, and obstacles to
entrepreneurial intentions. The sample size for thestudy is 210 comprising of 164 males and 46 females. In
the study, both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. Primary data was obtained using
questionnaires and Secondary data was also collected from books, journals, past research works, official
documents and the internet. Simple random sampling was used to select proportional number of samples from
the study area.
Data were analysed using percentages, regression and correlation.
.
The study has also focused on examining how many Addis Ababa University students possess the
entrepreneurial
intention towards self-employment, how the relationship of demographic factors affecting
their entrepreneurial
intention. However, training and skill development programs are necessary to increase
the personal capabilities and generate interest and
intention among students to have positive attitudes
towards entrepreneurship. This survey has also confirmed that the male persons at their prime age of 20-25
years old continue to be the most active group in terms of entrepreneurship and the role of entrepreneurial
role models in the family has a positive effect on the entrepreneurial perception and intentions
This paper suggests that there should be continuous effort to promote female entrepreneurship and
continuous effort from university to work closely with a variety of business support agencies or other
government agencies to raise students' awareness of various avenues of support and programs available to
assist them in their business start-ups.

The dissertation that is now presented, aims to study a social phenomenon that has gained increasing importance and study it under a commercial perspective, concluding about the impacts that it can bring for some markets. The purpose is to study the impact of the Fashion and Beauty advertisements models’ age on the purchase intention of female consumers over 50. This is a segment that has been gaining weight, expression and importance, and it is crucial to understand if it is been addressed with an effective communication strategy.
This research, after identifying some gaps in the literature on this such contemporaneous topic, extracted those that seem to be the most important variables to develop a study and draw conclusions through statistical analysis and validation, about how women over 50 have been seeing the markets communication, and how it impacts on the purchase intention.
In the first part of the study a deep review of the literature is made, providing a structured knowledge of what has already been studied by other authors on this topic, and on other matters related to or involved with this issue. In the second stage, the approach is quantitative. In the presented study 259 people were involved and asked to answer to a series of questions on the topics described above and according to their opinions and feelings towards some advertising images exhibited throughout the questionnaire.
The results revealed that although some values are low to be considered significant almost all the relationships between the variables, suggested by the literature, have occurred. The results are very interesting and highly applicable outputs to the markets concerned. All findings related to this study are adequately summarized in Section 6.

▼ This thesis seeks to explore the role of agent or 'user'
intention in the fields of Management Science and Systems Thinking. Primarily through the use of various modelling approaches these fields seek to provide assistance to organisational stakeholders who are looking to intervene in situations with a view to dealing with problems and/or bringing about some form of 'improvement'. Although the literature acknowledges that the various methodologies, techniques and tools of MS/ST can be used flexibly depending upon user
intention, to date,
intention itself has not been the
subject of detailed investigation. The thesis seeks to plug this gap in the literature.
In exploring
intention in some detail the thesis interlinks philosophy, theory and empirical work. The philosophical and theoretical components allow us to conceptualise
intention and better understand how it might work in concrete settings. The empirical component, conducted with a team of action researchers, grounds the discussion in practice.
The main proposition of the thesis is that
intention is a dual-sided phenomenon, i.e. "we do things intentionally, and we intend to do things" (Bratman, 1997). Thus
intention has a present and a future side. The research reported on through the thesis shows how, through language and actions, both sides of
intention can significantly shape the nature of interventions.
This being the case, the value of the work is that it provides new ways of accounting for and learning from interventions; in particular, it provides new frameworks for practitioners to better reflect on and guide their actions.

▼ Despite the apparent benefits of being mindful, people are often not very mindful. There seem to be forces that drive people toward as well as away from mindfulness. These forces are conceptualised in terms of a competition for scarce attentional capacity. To explore these forces and to test this framework, an experience sampling study among people with an explicit intention to be mindful and an ongoing practice to that end (29 participants, 1012 measurements) was done to examine the antecedents of mindfulness in their daily lives. The results generally support the framework. People tend to be more mindful if the intention to be mindful is salient, and if they feel good. They tend to be less mindful when they are in a hurry, experiencing threat, tired, or very busy. A conscious intention to be mindful seems to be very important, and its development may be a key ingredient in the development of mindfulness.

▼ Scholarship has recognised the importance of entrepreneurship for economic development. Increasingly, policy makers promote entrepreneurship as one of the solutions for unemployment concerns. However, although many people formulate entrepreneurial intention they fail to convert their intention into action; this problem is called the intention-action gap. The problem of intention-action gap is particularly salient in Saudi Arabia. Although people have positive perceptions about entrepreneurship and high entrepreneurial intention, the country’s entrepreneurial activity is low. This presents a barrier in achieving the country’s national strategy to create more entrepreneurs through the promotion of entrepreneurship. Here, raising an intention to become an entrepreneur does not equate to becoming an entrepreneur. Scholars often predict entrepreneurship by entrepreneurial intention. Thus, they assume that entrepreneurial intention is the best predictor of action. They use dominant intention models to predict entrepreneurial behaviour. However, there is compelling evidence that entrepreneurial intention alone is an insufficient predictor of subsequent entrepreneurial behaviour. Thus, it is inadequate to prepare people to deal with difficulties of initiating action and striving towards goal attainment. Hence, there is a need for a more proximal predictor of entrepreneurial behaviour that can promote goal striving. Self-regulation (simplistically thought of as ‘will-power’) has been shown to be a better and more reliable predictor of intention in other fields. In fact, it was found that supporting intention with self-regulation can enhance the action prediction by up to 18%. In entrepreneurship, self-regulation has been suggested to differentiate people with entrepreneurial intention from active entrepreneurs. Against this background, this thesis investigates the processes underlying the forming of entrepreneurial intention to identify predictors of self-regulation. Hence, it extends existing intention models with self-regulation that facilitate action initiation. Consequently, this study focuses on the link between entrepreneurial intention and self-regulation. In addition, due to the salient influence of culture in Saudi Arabia’s context, the study explores the effect of cultural values on entrepreneurial intention. The conceptual framework is developed to explain the link between entrepreneurial intention and self-regulation and the effect of cultural values. This proposed two main levels, namely, goal setting and goal striving. The former reflects forming entrepreneurial intention and deliberative mind-set. The latter reflects forming implementation intention and implemental mind-set. This model is then tested through questionnaires among 405 non-entrepreneurs working in the private sector in Saudi Arabia. The data collected are analysed using the statistical tool, partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The study found that several factors and their interactions are important to explain the…

▼ Professional Doctorate - Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Knowledge sharing is gaining traction and many organizations are becoming aware of the knowledge risks. Firms face rapid changing business environment and they draw on their knowledge learning and innovation capabilities to create their competitive advantages. Knowledge sharing among employees allows organizations to minimize the loss of important knowledge and to exploit and capitalize on existing resources. Prior literatures identified that social exchange relationship does have an impact on employee’s knowledge sharing behaviour. Although much of the knowledge sharing research has been extensively conducted in the Western contexts but the knowledge sharing initiatives such as leadership, leader-member exchange and team-member exchange have not been determined and intensively studied in the Chinese context. When managers and practitioners apply these initiatives into Chinese context, the understanding and insights are rather limited. Prior studies showed that knowledge sharing practice in the emerging economies is distinct from those in the well-developed economies, and some of these studies found that Chinese business practice can only be explained by adopting a Chinese perspective. Therefore, the research was dedicated to employ two indigenous constructs (working guanxi and paternalistic leadership) to examine their impact on employees’ knowledge sharing intention in the financial institutions in China, and to provide a parsimonious theoretical basis to the relationships between leadership, working guanxi and knowledge sharing intention. The aim of this thesis was to shed lights on how to enhance knowledge sharing practise in Chinese financial institutions through addressing the relationships among paternalistic leadership, working guanxi and knowledge sharing intention. The researcher applied both social exchange theory and social identity theory to form the theoretical basis of the conceptual framework and the research hypotheses. A quantitative cross-sectional research was conducted in Zhejiang Province of China and a total of 382 respondents, who worked in financial institutions, participated in this study. Structural equation modelling was performed to test the postulated hypotheses. The findings in this research revealed that three dimensions of paternalistic leadership had different impacts on working guanxi and knowledge sharing intention. Co-worker guanxi and supervisor-subordinate guanxi were found having opposite impact on the knowledge sharing intention. In particular, the co-worker guanxi indirectly mediated the relationship between benevolent leadership and knowledge sharing intention. The study of indigenous concepts of knowledge sharing intention enriched the current understanding of knowledge sharing practice in China and filled up the research gap by providing more comprehensive and precise observation on paternalistic leadership and working guanxi. This research identified certain leadership styles and their relationships with…

▼ The rapid development of Internet technology has revolutionized the traditional methods of communication within the global socio-cultural context. Among all Internet developing countries, China, the nation with one of the world’s largest economy and markets, is benefiting from the fastest rate of growth of Internet users. China is also experiencing the enormous transformation in all fields of communication led by the advancement of Internet technology. Social Network Services (SNS), as a newly developed virtual network system, plays an increasingly important part as the online platform for users from different areas of life to communicate and socialize within a virtual community. SNS provides new e-commerce opportunities for both multinational and domestic businesses. Most of these opportunities come from the wealth earned from direct and indirect advertisement as well as other forms of commercial promotions. However, as SNS has only attracts academic attentions recently, the number of previous relevant studies on this topic is too few to satiate the needs of SNS service providers and the academic researchers. Still, my research will need to rely on the previous studies but to include studies in similar directions, like those papers conducted on relevant e-commerce topic. After I have examined a number of selected referenced studies, I have concluded my research approach targets on the variables of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of usefulness, perceived risk, trust, familiarity, centrality, and national culture and their relationship with SNS user’s use
intention. The research is expected to examine and analyze the influences that alter the degree of use
intention in order to provide a clarified explanation for future academics and SNS marketers. By doing so, the expectation of the result of my research is to provide a much clarified and summarized outlines for future businesses that interested in the investment and development of SNS related services in the complex Chinese market. By referring to future business, the result of this research is expected to assist the new foreign businesses who have insufficient information and experience to operate in the unfamiliar Chinese markets where the user
intention of SNS does not match some of the Western reports. However, the domestic and experienced foreign businesses could also find usefulness out of the results.

▼ The work of accountants is all based on principles and ethics and hence demands that members of this profession exhibit high levels of ethical behaviour. However, some recent events of unethical behaviours have been recounted, calling for more research in this area. It is believed that to change the face of the profession and win back the trust of stakeholders, a new revolution of accountants must be raised. This study, therefore, investigates the relationship between values and the relevance attached to an ethical issue, and ethical decision-making of accounting students. To achieve this aim, the quantitative research approach is employed. A scenario-based questionnaire was employed to gather data from 444 accounting students within 4 universities, while PLS-SEM was used for the analysis of data. The results revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between honesty and self-control, and ethical judgement; and a significant negative relationship between honesty and behavioural intention. Also, the results showed a positive relationship between ethical judgement and behavioural intention. It is consequently recommended that accounting educators find a fine balance between personal values, ethical judgement and ethical behaviour to enhance the ethical decision-making of accounting students and subsequently, their behaviour.

▼ The purpose of this thesis is to present an empirical finding in the area of culture and entrepreneurial intention. The author developed an entrepreneurial culture measure regard to values of proudness and prejudice based on the data from the World Values Survey. Entrepreneurial intention as the dependent variable was draw from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Consortium (GEM) ’s 2006 dataset. The data sample contains 27 countries. The result shows the newly developed culture measure is negatively correlated with entrepreneurial intention, which means countries have high level of prejudice towards certain social groups such as women or immigrants could lead to lower level of entrepreneurial intention. A series of robustness tests were conducted to test the fitness of the model. In general these tests do support the robustness of the finding. However as for the shortage of the small sample size, future research is still needed to confirm this finding.

The introduction of eco-innovation is considered an effective way for companies to strategically align themselves with consumers’ increasing environmental concerns. Drawing on the sustainability and innovation literature, this dissertation proposes that product design factors, individual differences, and situational variables, significantly influence consumer responses to eco-innovation. The findings of five online experiments explore the underlying mechanisms of how consumers respond to eco-innovative product designs across various Internet-of-Things product categories. Specifically, we uncover the effect of trade-offs between innovative features and eco-friendly benefits on consumer responses and shine new light on the moderating role of consumer beliefs about eco-friendly product effectiveness (Study 1). Our results also show that different types of eco-friendly attributes in new product designs trigger different consumer responses (Study 2). Moreover, this dissertation sheds light on the nature of eco-friendly consumer innovativeness and its interaction effects with perceived trade-offs in eco-innovative product designs on consumers’ product evaluation and purchase intentions (Study 3). We also document consumers’ associations between detachability of an eco-friendly attribute on consumer responses (Study 4). Finally, we highlight that consumers’ evaluations of eco-innovation…

▼ Five studies examined interventions to increase the frequency of expressions of gratitude by psychology students in two classes of a psychology course at a large university in southwest Virginia. Studies 1 and 4 included signing a paper when declaring an
intention to express gratitude to people behaving prosocially, while studies 2, 3, and 5 included responding to writing prompts prior to declaring an
intention to express gratitude. Students in one class of Study 5 were also offered Actively-Caring for People (AC4P) wristbands that served as "tangible reminders of kindness" (Geller, 2013). Students in all studies were given one week to express gratitude. Gratitude expression was measured by self-report on a survey administered during the psychology course. In all but the first and fourth studies, increased intentions to express gratitude were significantly higher in the Intervention class than the Control class. The impact of the interventions on reports of gratitude expression was inconsistent. Theoretical/methodological explanations and directions for future research are discussed.

▼ Conflict is a component of interpersonal interactions, neither inevitable nor innately bad, but often commonplace (Deutsch & Coleman, 2000; Schellenberg, 1996). Conflict interactions that occur in the workplace can impact individuals, relationships, and the organization as a whole. This experimental study was framed from a contingency perspective to examine the extent to which specific contextual variables of a workplace conflict would influence participant responses in that interaction. During the study, 389 individuals responded to an online questionnaire containing a description of a hypothetical workplace conflict interaction with one level of three manipulated context variables (i.e., conflict type, verb abstraction level, and sex of parties). The context variables were hypothesized to influence participantsâ responses that included attitudes toward the interaction, subjective norms, appraisals of personal control and external control, and attributions of the locus of causality. This cognitive set of variables was hypothesized to explain respondentsâ behavioral intentions in that conflict. The four conflict behavioral intentions used in this study were control, nonconfrontation, compromise, and integrate. Analyses of the data included multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), canonical correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression. The results of MANOVA were that context had modest effects on cognition and behavioral
intention, examined in separate analyses. The conflict type, using a task versus relationship categorization, appeared to be the most salient of the context variables having effects on many of the cognitive measures in this study. Two other contextual variables, sex of conflict initiator and abstraction level of the verbs used to describe the conflict scenario had statistically significant results, but much lesser effects. The sex of the respondent played a minimal role in a statistically significant 3-way interaction with abstraction-level and sex of initiator. The cognitive variables together explained 29% of the variance in the set of conflict behavioral intentions using canonical correlation analysis. When the data were analyzed with hierarchical multiple regression, the context and cognitive variables explained statistically significant proportions of the variance in each behavioral
intention that ranged from 7% (of control), 15% (of nonconfrontation), 19% (of compromise), to 20% (of integrate). Different patterns of context and cognitive variables influenced each of the conflict behavioral intentions. These findings present a challenge to hold two ideas together, the context and the individual, in future research and current practice. The results of this study lend support to a contingency perspective that aspects of the context, when salient to a party in the conflict, will have effects on participant responses in that interaction.

▼ Mass-customization is a form of consumer-centric business practice, which is a hybrid of customization and mass-production (Gilmore & Pine II, 1997). It is the use of flexible processes and organizational structures to produce individually customized apparel products at the low cost of a standardized mass-production system (Hart, 1995). Very limited academic consumer research has been conducted in the area of apparel mass-customization. The purposes of the study were (a) to investigate consumers' purchase intentions of mass-customized apparel, (b) to examine the relationships among consumer characteristics, perceived usefulness, perceived behavioral control, attitude toward using apparel mass-customization, and purchase
intention of mass-customized apparel, and (c) to identify the predictors of the overall purchase intentions and those of the purchase intentions of specific types of mass-customized apparel (i.e., design, fit and personalization mass-customized apparel). A conceptual model was developed, and eight hypotheses were generated to test the proposed relationships among the variables. A questionnaire was developed as the instrument of collecting data. A national sample of 474 male adults was recruited by a market research company. Statistics such as descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the collected data. The results indicated that more than half of the respondents were willing to purchase mass-customized dress shirts. The relationships among consumer characteristics, perceived usefulness, perceived behavioral control, attitude toward using apparel mass-customization, and purchase
intention of mass-customized apparel were confirmed, and the predictors of the overall purchase
intention and of the purchase
intention of specific types of mass-customized apparel were identified. Based on the results, in-depth discussions and related marketing implications were provided.

▼ In this dissertation, I investigate why Korean allows failed-attempt interpretations of accomplishment predicates, but languages like English do not. For example, the English sentence "He broke the window, but the window was not broken" is a contradiction, but the corresponding Korean sentence is possible with the interpretation "He tried to break the window, but the window was not broken." Regarding this problem, I observe two related generalizations: (i) the
Subject Realization Generalization (SRG), which states that in the event structure of a verbal predicate, the (sub)event directly related to the predicate’s
subject must occur in the actual world, and (ii) the Subject’s
Intention Generalization (SIG), stating that non-occurrence of an event requires the subject’s
intention regarding the event. I incorporate these generalizations into a possible world semantic analysis, which I argue accounts for various interpretations of accomplishments in Korean. In addition, with regard to complex predicate sentences (e.g. light verb constructions, serial verb constructions), I propose the Event Connection Generalization (ECG), which asserts that in the event structure of a complex predicate sentence, connecting event(s) must occur in the actual world. I also argue that the
intention-based account is not just restricted to a certain class of lexical verbs that project accomplishment predicates, but a broader class of accomplishments involving complex predicates in Korean.

▼ The purpose of this study was to determine those variables that best predict a student’s
intention to continue in a music class when entering middle or junior high school. This study utilized the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a framework to aide in examining student behavioral intentions regarding school music participation. The original TPB constructs of (a) attitude, (b) subjective norms, and (c) perceived behavioral control were utilized as independent variables. Additionally, two constructs related to parental involvement (parental attitudes towards music study and parental expectations for music study) and the variable of peer influence were included as additional independent variables. The participants in this study (N = 278) were students from six schools located in south Louisiana. All participants were enrolled in compulsory elementary general music classes during their final year of elementary school. Statistically significant correlations were found between all examined variables (p < .01), with the highest correlation being between the TPB construct of attitude and
intention. A simultaneous multiple regression analysis revealed that all independent variables accounted for 68.1% of the variance in the dependent variable of
intention. The overall multiple regression was statistically significant, R2 = .681, F(6, 271) = 96.52, p < .001. Further examination of the regression results revealed that three variables were statistically significant predictors of
intention: TPB-attitude (p < .001), TPB-subjective norm (p < .001), and parental attitudes towards music study (p = .001). An analysis of the written responses to the open-ended statement that asked students to indicate possible reasons other students might not choose to continue in school music revealed that the highest cited category was attitude towards school music.
