▼ Cette thèse étudie la coordination des équipes et la polycentricité en proposant une approche ératique d’une analyse institutionnelle de la coordination. En effet, la définition de la coordination n’est pas aisée même si le terme est utilisé quotidiennement dans différents domaines et tout particulièrement celui de la santé. La coordination s’appliquerait aujourd’hui aussi bien aux actions, qu’aux acteurs ou aux éléments d’une activité. Malone et Crowston (1994) relèvent que la coordination est tellement présente dans notre quotidien que nous ne la percevons principalement que lorsqu’elle est défaillante. Pour affiner la compréhension de la coordination étudiée à l’aide des théories des organisations et des théories des comportements organisationnels, de récentes contributions ont privilégié une analyse du caractère micro social, continu et situé de la coordination. Elles examinent les pratiques de coordination développées par les acteurs sur le terrain (par exemple, Faraj, Xiao 2006 ; Bechky, 2006; Kellogg et al., 2006; Jarzabkowski, et al., 2012; Harrison et Rouse, 2014; Schakel et al., 2016; Ben-Menahem et al., 2016; Wolbers et al., 2017 ; Bouty et Drucker-Godard, 2018). L’analyse de la coordination s’inscrirait ainsi dans l’examen des effets récursifs entre pratiques concrètes de coordination et influences institutionnelles. Pour autant, force est de constater que la littérature peine à démontrer ces influences réciproques. L’environnement institutionnel est complexe : de nombreux centres de décisions peuvent être identifiés et sont interdépendants (Ostrom V. et al, 1961). Pour investiguer ces environnements, OstromE (2005) proposent une conception polycentrique de la diversité institutionnelle qui permet de comprendre comment l’on peut mettre en lien l’organisation des moyens pour réaliser une action collective, coordonnée au niveau institutionnel aussi divers soit-il, et les pratiques des acteurs au sein d’arènes d’action. Cette thèse montre que l’approche pratique de l’analyse et développement institutionnel (ADI) proposée par Ostrom E. permet de combiner les différentes analyses de la coordination menées jusqu’à présent dans la littérature gestionnaire au sein d’un même modèle. A l’aide d’une recherche qualitative compréhensive de la coordination des équipes du secours d’urgence pré-hospitalier, nous proposons un cadre d’analyse de la coordination intégrant les différentes approches de la coordination développées en sciences de gestion. Nous détaillons ainsi un élément central du cadre ADI d’Ostrom E. : l’arène d’action qui est le lieu de pratiques de coordination. La prise en compte de la diversité institutionnelle en action amène à repenser l’équipe en méta-collectif. ▼ Technology transfer and commercialization partnerships have become a key focus in knowledge based economies. They are deemed a necessary means to translate basic academic research to market based solutions. These partnerships can be considered a special group of public-private partnerships, as they increasingly include universities as a central player. The objective of this study is to explore the institutional and behavioural underpinnings of technology transfer and commercialization partnerships in an attempt to provide a comprehensive platform for scholars and practitioners in the area to analyse the various key components of these partnerships. To do this, we use the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) Framework presented by Elinor Ostrom (2005) to gain deeper understanding of how factors such as community attributes, biophysical and material conditions, and rules impact the interactions between participants in technology transfer and commercialization partnerships. To understand the impact of behavioural factors on the technology transfer partnerships, we then make use of two key concepts from the area of behavioural decision making: bounded rationality (Simon, 1955) and Prospect Theory (Kahneman and Tverskey, 1979). Based on these theories, and on insights from the IAD framework, we develop an understanding of how cognitive limitations may influence decisions of individual participants in technology transfer and commercialization partnerships. The theoretical framework is complemented by a case study on Saskatoon’s Agriculture Biotechnology Cluster. More specifically, we analyze the initiative to develop the Bio-economy Center of Commercialization and Research (BECCR), which was initiated to pool commercially viable technologies held across various organizations in the cluster. The study confirms our theoretical postulates around institutional and behavioural factors necessary for successful development and functioning of these partnerships. The study shows that cognitive framing of the issue in the context of win-loss opportunities are key behavioural factors while the broad definition of technologies, different organizational cultures, university administrative policies, ILO structure, time frames, faculty attitudes and lack of political are found to be the most important institutional factors. ▼ Public pension systems represent a critical piece in the puzzle of public financial sustainability. Unfunded pension liabilities deserve additional scrutiny in the post Great Recession environment of sluggish economic growth, high unemployment, an aging population and increased debt burdens at all levels of government. Left unaddressed, these liabilities are an added social and economic challenge, mortgaging capacity of state and local governments to provide essential public services to their constituencies and ensure secure retirement of their employees. Formal and informal institutional arrangements have a large role in shaping public pension policy at the state and local level. It is critical that these institutions remain transparent, representative and that policy process be conducted in a manner publicly accountable to all stake holders, including pension beneficiaries and taxpayers. Appropriate incentives, such as congruence between policy costs and benefits, are critical to long-term financial sustainability of public pensions. This dissertation identifies key actors influencing public pension policy at the state and local level, their respective incentives, and quantifies the impact of their decisions on the financial sustainability of public pension systems. This research uses the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework to evaluate the consequences of formal and “invisible” institutions on pension policy, identifying “design principles” conducive to creating financially sustainable public pension systems. This study also examines the applicability of the IAD framework to the policy sphere of public pensions more broadly. These issues are examined in a detailed case study of the City of Houston (COH). The COH had over $2.6 billion in fiscal 2012 unfunded pension liabilities. The case study is based on original interviews with major policy stake holders, a field study of the Financial Management T ask Force assembled to assess long-term financial hurdles facing COH, and an intervention time-series analysis of the COH unfunded pension liabilities. This study finds that beneficiaries’ interests are overrepresented in all pension governance structures at the expense of those of taxpayers;; politicians’ electoral horizons discourage tackling long-term issues such as pensions; split state-local governance design discourages sustainable solutions; and current pension institutions lack in both transparency and public accountability. Irrigation systems are common pool resources since they are characterized by both difficulty of exclusion and high subtractability. Traditional economic theory argues that the absence of property rights and the selfish nature of mankind can lead to the exhaustion of common pool resources, which Hardin in 1968 defined as the “tragedy of the commons”. However, a significant number of publications found in bibliography, challenges these ominous predictions. These studies demonstrate that people with common interest, perceive the degree of their interdependence and contract durable agreements that ensure both high performance and sustainable management of the resource. The Institutional Analysis and Development framework which is widely used for studying common pool resources played a leading role in the organization of this study. At first a case study research which was conducted in villages of Euritania is presented. The results of the research indicate that local communities managed to self-govern irrigation systems by creating long lasting institutions, which successfully avoided water resources overexploitation and internal conflicts.An economic experiment, which aimed at the modeling of the interaction between users of an underground aquifer and the possibility of collaboration among them, also took place. In the experiment a normalized equation defined the outcome for the user of a single well, as a function of his and the other users’ pumping rate as well as the hydrological conditions. A highly competitive attitude is assumed to guide the behavior of each user in the perspective of maximizing one’s profit. Nevertheless the results showed that introducing the components of communication and sanctions among the users lead to a cooperative attitude and to the achievement of lower pumping rates, close to the optimal social solution. Finally, agent-based models are presented. The models simulating the baseline interaction between the users of an underground aquifer responded successfully to a comparison with the economic experiment at a set of variables. The simulation of the users’ behaviour after a communication session, using elements of cognitive psychology, was also accomplished by a multi-population genetic algorithm. Using a single-population algorithm a number of agents were assumed to follow an altruistic behaviour i.e. with pumping rates equal to the optimal social solution. It is demonstrated that the influence of the altruist actions on the behavior of others as well as the total economic benefit is quite important.

▼ Social network analysis was used in combination with qualitative methods to identify characteristics of stakeholder networks that supported cases of institutional development in rural water sectors in Ghana, Malawi, India, Tajikistan, and Bolivia. Institutions studied included local governments, a national government institution, and community operator committees managing water treatment facilities. Interviews with 162 participants in these countries used a facilitated network drawing exercise to capture data on stakeholder relationships and perceptions of factors supporting institutional development. Quantitative analysis of these networks and qualitative analysis of perceived factors identified three network characteristics as supporting institutional development for rural water supply in multiple countries and types of institutions. The three characteristics are: information and skill ties between an institution and stakeholders at lower levels of sector hierarchy; information and skill ties between an institution and stakeholders at higher levels of sector hierarchy; and coordination between stakeholders at higher levels of sector hierarchy that strongly engage an institution. These three characteristics can be observed from a network perspective, and qualitative descriptions of these interactions can improve understanding of the nuance and benefit of particular network ties. Social network analysis on its own cannot predict whether an institution will develop if these network characteristics exist, but it can be used to identify where network ties are absent or weakly developed. Methods and findings from this research enable a rigorous analysis of complex stakeholder interactions in rural water sectors to identify where particular relationships might be strengthened, and strengthening the environments that support institutional development has the potential to lead to the stronger institutions that are necessary for sustainable rural water service delivery.

▼ Payments for ecosystem services (PES), or conservation incentives, are an increasingly popular approach to encouraging natural resources conservation on private lands. The goal of PES approaches is to motivate conservation by private landowners that would not otherwise take place by providing an economic incentive. To achieve this goal, incentive programs must be available to landowners who can provide the desired services; supportive policy structures must be in place; landowners must be willing to participate as sellers of ecosystem services; and the program itself must have an institutional structure that effectively regulates the production, sale, and maintenance of targeted ecosystem services. This dissertation uses a combination of case study and comparative research methods to develop new knowledge and tools for assessing each of these necessary conditions for success. The potential development of an incentive program to conserve habitat for endangered jaguars in southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico is used as a case study to understand the attitudes of ranchers toward participation in PES programs and related policies and regulations. Results show that ranchers have strong intrinsic conservation motivations unrelated to economic incentives, coupled with significant concerns about the impacts of government regulations that could accompany participation in a PES program. Comparative research of the institutional structures of existing PES programs is carried out using the Institutional Analysis and Development framework. Focusing on water quality trading, one of the most common types of PES program, a classification system for PES program institutional arrangements is developed and the utility of the classification system for analyzing institutional diversity is demonstrated. Together, the case study and comparative research provide a means of linking empirical assessment of PES governance models with the preferences of targeted participants, increasing the likelihood of successful conservation outcomes. ▼ The Joint Forest Management (JFM) policy was implemented across India during the 1990s with the vision of combining forest conservation and rural livelihood improvement goals through creating local level partnerships between the Forest Department and the local villagers. The difference between the rhetoric and the reality has been widely documented, as has the great variety in outcomes of JFM seen in forests and villages across India, raising the question about the reasons for such diversity. In this research the departure point of forests as a common pool resource (CPR) is taken, central to which is the concept of collective action through which forest users devise rules to manage the forests. Collective action lies at the heart of the JFM policy. One reason for the variety in outcomes of JFM at a local level could be the differing levels of involvement of external actors- seen here as individuals and organisations other than the local forest users, with the key external actors being the Forest Department and NGOs. This research uses a comparative analysis of four cases in which collective action is functioning and two cases in which collective action is not functioning, with the level of key external actor involvement varying across the cases. The influence of external actors is measured through the independent variable indicators: provision of relevant knowledge, management and social skills, communication channels and financial support. The sustainability of collective action (the dependent variable) is assessed using the indicators: the functioning of collective action, the level of understanding of JFM policy, awareness and involvement of forest users, connections with external actors, confidence in future benefits and the perceived ability to independently manage JFM. The main conclusion is that external actor involvement is not a pre-requisite for functioning collective action, however external actors do occupy a central and powerful position to influence the level of sustainability of collective action. Whilst there are individual positive cases of external actors influencing individual indicators, there is no clear correlation between external actor involvement and the indicators for sustainability of collective action, indicating that their involvement does not necessarily lead to more sustainable collective action. The influence of external actors is determined at an individual, rather than an organisational level and is limited due to a lack of policy knowledge, limited efforts in outreach towards marginalised groups, poor communication between external actors themselves and the low level to which JFM is institutionalised within the Forest Department. The study concludes with policy recommendations for external actors at a local level to strengthen the sustainability of JFM in Maharashtra. Advisors/Committee Members: van Laerhoven, Dr Frank.

▼ Wind energy has consistently grown at a rapid pace over the last decade, doubling in total installed wind energy capacity roughly every two and a half years. Community and economic development externalities of wind energy development are presumed to contribute to community wellbeing through market-based mechanisms. The scholarship on the interactions between wind energy firms and their host communities has yet to critically analyze these presumptions despite the extraordinary importance of energy governance and development in current affairs. The status quo continues to be advanced in public policy with little assessment of the community outcomes, nor of the consequence of privileging a given institutional model (the investor-owned utility) over robust alternatives (electric co-operatives). By ignoring the effects of organizational structure of wind energy firms, government energy policymakers may be missing an opportunity to enhance potential community development outcomes. Dominant theories of development –from the Wilsonian bureaucratic administrative approach to Hardin’s Tragedy of the Commons- claim that development is optimized when external, elite, centralized actors govern. But recent work by Elinor Ostrom and the Bloomington School finds that in many instances community development is optimized when resources users from the local community govern themselves. What are the implications of applying Bloomington School policy to the wind energy sector? In order to address this, two questions are posed for analysis: How does wind energy development interact with community development? And what roles does the institutional model play in these interactions? Comparative case studies were performed of two ownership models of wind energy firms and their host communities: Ward County, North Dakota’s co-operative- owned PrairieWinds wind farm, and McLean County, Illinois’s investor-owned Twin Groves wind farm. The Bloomington School’s Institutional Analysis and Development Framework informed the methodological approach to understand how wind energy development and operations interact with local level community development, how the ownership model influences the actions of the utility, and how the systems of endogenous and exogenous governance influence the overall interaction. Fieldwork, interviews, and archival analyses were used to gather the data necessary to inform these questions. Findings indicate that the ownership model of the wind energy firm matters, namely that the co-operative firm exhibits a number of features conferring enhanced community development outcomes. In contrast to these findings, current wind energy development policy privileges absentee, private ownership and stewardship of wind energy resources. Public policy must allow for institutional diversity in order to guarantee optimal community development outcomes. This thesis discuss on the impact of local government institutional reforms on economic space. Case study of the research is a lagged region, namely Eastern Macedonia and Thrace,Greece (NUTS II). Research examines thoroughly the influence that Kapodistrias andKallikrates reforms exercised on Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.The doctoral thesis studies the improvements were made on formal and informal institutions by local government institutional reforms. Central state’s withdrawal fromkeynsian regulative policies in combination with substitution of fordism by flexible forms ofproduction, rearranged regional institutional framework. The adoption of cooperative strategies by local actors had major importance while local and regional governments advanced their competences.The methodology of the thesis is based mainly on primary research and afterwards onsecondary research. Research process is joined by elements of Game Theory. Equilibriumstands on behalf of Kallikrates reform suggesting that is a major step of Greek localgovernments system to regionalism. Formal Institutions (intergovernmental cooperation,local–regional government), received more impact than informal institutions (social capital,local entrepreneurship), did. Kapodistrias reform influenced more local cooperative actions byestablishing cognitive path dependence to Kallikrates reform. It is also notified, that almost allvariables were characterized by high levels of reliability, due to the corresponds of localactors to the queries.The policy implications supported by the doctoral thesis, underline the necessity for enhancing financial autonomy of local and regional government. Moreover, significant improvements can take place throughout the revisions of cooperative strategies by including universities and research institutions. Last but not least, the binding of local actors into a cognitive cooperative culture can generate strong conditions for regional development atEastern Macedonia and Thrace.

▼ Smart grids within the transition to sustainable energy systems Smart grid systems are widely considered as crucial in the energy transition, because they allow for greater flexibility in bridging temporal gaps between electricity supply and demand in renewable energy systems. To do so, the systems make use of information and communication technologies to measure and monitor supply and demand in real-time, on the basis of which the use of renewable electricity can be optimized. Despite this important role in future renewable energy systems, the introduction of smart grids comes with serious moral repercussions, for example for data privacy and security, autonomy and control, or distributive justice. This dissertation analyzes the moral implications of smart grid systems, and provides guidance for designers and policymakers on how to address these implications in smart grid technologies and institutions, with the ultimate motive to increase the systems’ ethical acceptability. Interdisciplinary in nature, the research contributes to value-sensitive design, institutional analysis, and energy justice. It is in line with academic endeavors to enrich energy research with insights from the social sciences and humanities. It thereby adds to a literature that is dominated by technological approaches and presents smart grids as a technical ‘fix’ to make electricity systems more sustainable. The main body of this dissertation consists of four papers that, collectively, address the ethical acceptability of smart grids. It combines conceptual insights with empirical investigations. Conceptual investigations draw from ethics of technology, value-sensitive design and theories of justice used in the energy justice literature. In December 2017, the municipality of Amsterdam announced the development of a new city in its port: Haven-Stad. The plan comprises a redevelopment strategy to transform port lands towards a mixed use urban area with up to 70.000 dwellings. This announcement caused a conflict between port users and the city. This integration of various stakeholders and interests is key for successful urban area redevelopment, especially in the complex port-city interface. Goal of this thesis is to understand and learn from the presumed conflict between port and city in the case of Amsterdam. Therefore, an actor-centered institutional analysis was conducted of the strategic governance and planning around Haven-Stad. The level of integration between scales, sectors and agencies per outcome of each planning phase was measured and then set against the analysed institutional setting. This research identified various socio-cultural, legal-economic and governance factors in the institutional setting that affect plan making in the port-city interface. Various subjects, such as relaxed environmental regulations, decentralized urban planning and change of the political landscape have contributed to unintegrated planning and conflicts. The municipality has a culture of blueprint strategic urban planning and is focused on integrating different departments and solving an ongoing housing crisis. On the other hand, the fact that the port is fossil fuel based and corporatized -but municipally owned- limited its ability to prevent urban takeover. This thesis recommends the development of a true and joint port-urban vision, the enhancement of cooperation between local, regional and national stakeholders and the involvement of private parties and port users in plan making. In an outlook towards the introduction of the new Environment and Planning Act, this research indicates that decentralized and flexible planning instruments may increase the chance for potential conflicts in industrial and waterfront redevelopment areas.

▼ This study is about the gender dimensions of land reform in South Africa. The case study is that of a housing and resettlement project in Daggakraal, Mpumalanga Province. The aim of the study was to describe and analyse empirical realities for rural women, in relation to land, in Daggakraal. The focus was on the research questions for the study namely the nature of land reform practice; whether gender issues were central in land reform at all stages of the project; whether or not participation of women was truly genuine; and the constraints that were faced in the process of land reform delivery. The study was conducted in Daggakraal, a rural town in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Research methods employed were both quantitative and qualitative with more emphasis on the latter. A total of 100 respondents participated in the study. This number included 10 key informants 3 of whom were trained as research assistants. The findings indicate that there was very little gender analysis carried out prior to land reform. For this reason land reform has not benefitted the women and men of Daggakraal. Land reform policies and other legislation put in place were not followed to the letter in Daggakraal and in other areas of the country where land reform was implemented; the first land reform (SLAG) has not benefitted the poor, especially women; the rural terrain is an area of contestation and competing interests between women and men. There is also a lack of institutional arrangements to implement a gendered approach to land reform. This study demonstrates the need to tackle and transform the existing power relations at the household level, if government is serious about the gender dimension of land reform in South Africa. In a small way it is hoped that this study will contribute to the limited writing on land reform and gender and also provide a gendered critique of the land reform programme in South Africa. The Gender Analysis Framework (GAF) and the feminist and gender perspectives have helped the researcher to understand and explain the gender dynamics in Daggakraal. La ricerca considera il problema dell'effettività dell'aiuto pubblico allo sviluppo secondo una prospettiva istituzionale. Nello specifico,la sostenibilità di accordi cooperativi tra donors and recipients viene considerata con riferimento a modelli istituzionali teorici. Il sistema di incentivi che determina la natura della relazione d'aiuto nel caso del General Budget Support è inoltre considerato con riferimento alla più recente prassi sviluppatasi in Tanzania.

The researches considers that issues that are inherently connected with the type of donor-recipient relationship affect the productivity of aid. This is mainly because incentives embodied in the relation shape party behaviours. The basic elements that characterized the aid relationship and the incentives that aid organization face, are in fact altered according to the institutional set in which money flows. Different aid modalities bear in themselves the potential of acting on the aid relationship by changing the basic rules of the game. General Budget Support (GBS), as a new aid modality represents quite an interesting institution. Getting the “incentives” right for cooperation, in such a context, would imply a rethinking of the basic theoretical model and organizational features on the ground of the evolving practices and specific technology of provision. The research aim is opening a route of possible investigation into the dynamics of incentives related to international cooperation at country level. Tanzania has been chosen among a series of possible cases study as in the Sub Saharan Africa panorama it represents one of most successful cases of GBS implementation. The analysis is grounded on a general institutional analysis that puts at the centre of observation the structure of the negotiations between the group of donors and the recipient government. The framework employed represents an adaptation of the Institutional Analysis for Development. The purpose of understanding the set of explicit and hidden motivations is functional to better delineate the contractual set in which the bulk of relations takes place.Results obtained from the empirical analysis are considered in a theoretical fashion with the purpose of generalizing on the main structural change caused by GBS on the donor-recipient relation. Concepts are taken from NIE and organizational theory to study the governance structure of aid relations.

Este trabalho estuda os modos de produção discursiva do que se denomina, na atualidade, deficiência. Vale-se da análise institucional do discurso, proposta por Marlene Guirado, como referência teórico-metodológica em todas as etapas da pesquisa, em especial para a análise das entrevistas realizadas. Estas trazem à cena o discurso de quatro pessoas (re)conhecidas como pessoas com deficiência e de seus familiares; todas as quatro matriculadas na rede municipal de ensino de uma cidade próxima à cidade de São Paulo. O período de realização das entrevistas (2008-2010) coincide com o momento em que as práticas vinculadas ao modelo tradicional de ensino ofertado àqueles alunos (educação especial) passam a ser substituídas por práticas enunciadas como visando outro modelo de ensino, denominado educação inclusiva. Também é analisado o discurso de seis educadores e seis profissionais de outras áreas, todos eles ligados direta ou indiretamente às quatro pessoas com deficiência e em contato direto ou indireto entre si, no cotidiano profissional. Analisadas uma a uma, as entrevistas são agrupadas primeiramente pela sua origem, a saber: pessoas e familiares; educadores e terapeutas. São analisadas as singularidades que se destacam em cada entrevista e as regularidades que se desenham pela repetição de termos e expressões no entrecruzamento desses discursos. Obtêm-se, dessa forma, categorias que não só constituem o campo discursivo específico do conjunto de entrevistas como indicam os gêneros discursivos e os modos particulares de dizer e colocar em circulação um discurso da deficiência. Assim efetivada, a análise permite afirmar que a deficiência, dita como falta, limitação, dificuldade; mostrada como imperfeição, doença, bloqueio, também é associada, pela negação, à capacidade/incapacidade dos sujeitos. A transitividade dos termos enunciados não é complementada senão com termos vagos e gerais, como artigos e pronomes indefinidos. Contrastada, no discurso, com as narrativas de experiências e histórias concretas de vida, em especial na fala das pessoas com deficiência e de seus familiares, a dimensão conceitual e abstrata da categoria deficiência parece não ter destaque na enunciação, dando lugar ao inefável da experiência humana

This is a study of modes of discourse production of the currently so-called disability. The institutional analysis of discourse as proposed by Marlene Guirado was used as a theoretical and methodological reference of the research study in all phases of this study, particularly in the analysis of the interviews. The interviews conveyed the discourses of four individuals known as people with disabilities and their families. The individuals were public school students from a town near the city of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The study was conducted during a transition period when the traditional model of special education was replaced with inclusive education. All interviews were carried out between 2008 and 2010. ▼ In pair programming (PP), two software developers share one computer and thus usually one keyboard and mouse to work simultaneous and jointly on the same artifacts. Due to the high interest in agile development methods, PP has become a respected research topic. However, the majority of empirical studies have been carried out using quantitative methods in which PP is considered as a "black box". These studies provide figures, for example regarding the performance of the developers, but they can neither explain how these figures were achieved nor the discrepancies with other comparable studies. To close this evident gap, the internal process structure (microprocess of PP) would have to be analyzed. This has however only been attempted in a few studies. This is the point of departure for this thesis. Instead of focusing on specific aspects of PP, the basis for a wide range of specialized, qualitative research is created. Methods and tools for an effective, consolidated, qualitative analysis of the PP microprocess are provided by the so-called framework which consists of two parts: A qualitative research method which is tailored to the analysis of video recordings of PP sessions. It is based on the grounded theory methodology (GTM) by Strauss and Corbin which has been extended by four practices without changing its core principles. Secondly, there is the so-called foundation layer, an adaptive system of 74 concepts and numerous application rules used to conceptualize the fundamental activities of individual pair members. The system of concepts is not a coding scheme in the classical sense, though. Rather, it is designed in a way that it may be differentiated, generalized, expanded, limited or supplemented in subsequent, more specialized studies (i.e. regarding the transfer of knowledge). It can also be used for the purpose of improving the theoretical sensitivity. It addresses both linguistic actions (i.e. concerning process control or design) as well as other actions of the developers. The foundation layer itself has also been developed with the help of the extended GTM. The framework forms the first crucial step towards a holistic understanding of PP. ▼ The usability group at RISE Research Institute of Sweden primarily perform usability evaluations for their clients. Usability evaluations are performed on launched products as well as early prototypes, the purpose of these evaluations is to detect problems and give suggestions on how they can be solved. The usability group offers a variety of usability evaluations, such as expert evaluations where experts assess the usability of a product and user tests were participants are observed when preforming tasks with a product. Eye tracking is a relatively new tool that measures eye movement; this tool is used within the usability group at RISE today, mostly as a compliment in usability tests. No extensive analysis is made of the data collected using eye tracking, due to lack of time, resources and knowledge. The purpose of this project is to investigate whether and, if so, how eye tracking can be used efficiently to evaluate usability in user tests. At the start of the project a literature study, an analysis of the current state was carried out along with a practical exploration of the eye tracking technology and associated analysis tools. Based on the information gathered in the first part of the project, two directions were selected. A qualitative approach, with the aim of exploring and explaining why a usability issue arises, and a quantitative approach with the aim to compare two equivalent products and determining which one of them is best in a usability perspective. Early in the project challenges with the collection and evaluating eye tracking data were identified. These challenges were largely related to how a usability test is conducted. In order to further explore how to best perform a usability test using eye tracking, a pilot study was conducted in which the test object was a microwave oven. The goal of the pilot study was to develop a test setup to be able to collect eye tracking data with minimal impact on factors affecting the eye tracking data. Examples of factors are "think aloud" and that the test moderator asks questions during when the participant perform a task. Based on the insights from the pilot study, the test setup was further developed, and both a qualitative and quantitative method of data collection and analysis was developed. The test setup and the two methods were evaluated in a usability test with two clock radios. The results of the tests in this project show that the qualitative analysis of eye tracking data can gather detailed data on how a person searches for information when performing a given task. By looking at the eye movement pattern, you can get indications of shortcomings in the information layout of a particular product. Eye tracking allows you to understand why a person fails a task by checking if the test person saw the desired information without interpreting it or if the person completely missed the information that was necessary to complete the task. ▼ India has recently embarked on a massive smart cities mission aiming to use modern technologies to develop sustainable solutions across 100 selected cities. The national government-sponsored initiative appears ambiguous regarding a precise understanding of the ‘smart city’ concept in the Indian context. It is unclear how the Smart City Plan will converge with the broader urban development framework and how local governance needs to be reorganised to deal with the smart city challenge. This thesis begins by examining debate around the smart city concept itself and building a bottom-up approach to define smart cities in the local Indian context. The analysis presented in this study shows that the smart cities definition should not only focus on digital technology but should also integrate the fundamentals of the sustainable city and smart community to emerge as a holistic concept. The research then identifies an appropriate indicator system and builds urban typologies for identification of relative advantage and disadvantage across smart cities. It offers an approach employing cluster analysis to group the 100 selected cities and discriminant analysis to establish the statistical validity of those groups and identify the key factors that distinguish between the ‘leading group’ of cities and the those ‘on the edge’. The urban typology analysis results show that significant disparities remain across Indian regions regarding access to social capital, higher education, health and digital infrastructure. By identifying groups of cities with shared challenges and opportunities, this study generates a new discourse on place-based smart city strategies. Further, this thesis provides a critical appraisal of smart city policies and governance instruments in select case study areas. An integrated smart city planning and institutional strategy is developed for inclusive smart cities development. The discussions in this research link the global theoretical development of smart cities with local urbanisation challenges and aspirations and provide a much-needed scholarly basis for the development of smart cities in India. ▼ Rural development by means of providing uninterruptible power supply has become a priority among developing countries. Nigeria especially has on its top agenda the mandate to provide clean and cost-effective means of energy to the rural communities, hardest hit by wave of incessant outages of electricity supply. Renewable Energy (RE), a clean form of energy that can be derived from natural sources is widely available throughout Nigeria but is not harnessed. In this dissertation a Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) framework is proposed for renewable energy towards rural community development in Nigeria as indicated in the 18-point recommendations of Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN). Moreover, a cost-benefit analysis tool is formulated and developed from the CBA framework in order to analyze comparatively the costs and intangible benefits of renewable energy projects for rural application. A case study demonstrating the working methodology of the proposed framework is presented in order to establish the cost-benefit components by assessing the comparative cost-benefit analysis of RE at a rural site of Nigeria. Erinjiyan Ekiti rural area is located for CBA assessment with three RE resources (solar, wind and small hydro) selected for consideration. Through the application of Contingent Valuation Method (CVM), the respondents' willingness to pay for RE supply is obtained and RE benefits in monetary terms computed. Using three economic decision criteria namely: Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR); the three RE resources are ranked according to their economic viability. The result of the analysis provides useful insight to investors and decision makers into how RE projects in rural community should be conducted. Foremost, it is revealed that all three RE options will be economically viable if implemented, though adequate caution must be taken when making a decision. Based on the CBA assessment, the Small-Hydro Power (SHP) option is ranked as the most viable option. However, this is swiftly negated if RE social impact, such as the spiritual belief of the rural dwellers, who rely on the only potential river as a medium of communication with their ancestors, are taken into consideration. Furthermore, a sensitivity assessment of the three RE options revealed that only solar photovoltaic (PV) option is marginally viable, thus turns negative upon an assumed increase in discount rate of only 17%. Herein, the proposed CBA framework provides a useful insight into an efficient method of appraising RE projects in rural communities. A CBA simulation tool is formulated and adapted from the CBA framework to enable quicker, reliable and automated means of assessing RE projects with a view to making wise investment decision.
