▼ This report set out to provide an answer on the question of whether the standard format of a startup accelerator program would transfer well to an internal corporate accelerator program, and, when this was proven to not be the case, it was shown how this format could be adapted for internal corporate purposes by answering the three empirical research questions of the study. The first question was concerned with whether the components of this standard startup accelerator format would reduce the difficulty in reaching the goals of an internal corporate accelerator program, and it was shown that only half of the components in fact did so. The second question was what the actual levels of difficulty in reaching the goals of such a program were, and it was found that there was a strong distribution in the experienced levels of difficulty with reaching the goals by the population that was analyzed in the current study. The third and final question concerned whether this observed distribution in the levels of experienced difficulty could be explained by the characteristics that characterize internal corporate New Product Development projects, and it was found that this was indeed possible for some of the goals. The results of these analyses were combined to formulate a set of design principles, which could be used to determine which components to include in a personalized internal corporate accelerator program, depending on the characteristics of a specific project in the program. Furthermore, it was shown how the design principles could be used to determine the proper division of time and resources over these components in the program. Finally, it was argued that the principles could be used for selection purposes, to select only those projects to partake in an internal corporate accelerator program that would stand to gain the most benefit from such a program. After formulating the design principles for such programs, it was argued that these internal corporate accelerator programs could be used as a vehicle for introducing improvements to the regular New Product Development processes of corporate organizations.

▼ What is the relationship between a firm’s alliances and its acquisition choice and performance? In this dissertation, I argue that alliances may not only substitute for, but also be complementary to technology acquisitions. I also propose that acquirer’s alliances and how they relate to the target have an important effect on that acquirer’s acquisition performance. I highlight the role of distinct components of the acquirer’s alliance portfolio – its functional and technological alliances in, or outside of its core business – for that firm’s technology acquisition choice and performance. When it comes to choice, I show that a higher number of functional alliances is correlated with a higher number of technology acquisitions in same business segments, and with a lower number of technology acquisitions in other business segments where the firm may not have functional alliances. At the same time, technological alliances generally substitute for technology acquisitions, but may be complementary to technology acquisitions within strategically important markets outside of the acquirer’s core business. Building on my investigation into acquisition choice, I show that both functional and technological alliances are an important factor in performance outcomes of technology acquisitions following these strategic choices. I find evidence supporting my claims using a sample of 208 large, public, high-tech US firms from 1996-2010, with their 13,074 total unique alliances and 5,215 unique acquisitions, as well as over 1.4 million unique patents. I contribute to corporate strategy and technology and innovation management research by showing how firms’ boundary choices, specifically when it comes to technology acquisitions, as well as the performance outcomes of these choices, are influenced not only by internal, but also by external resources and capabilities accessible through their alliance portfolios. I also address the enduring puzzle of why firms engage in seemingly unrelated acquisitions by showing that sometimes, such transactions may in fact be indirectly related and complementary to the acquirer through its alliance portfolio.

▼ Role of digital infrastructures to improve data exchange on trade lanes becomes more critical as complex border procedures contribute to inefficiency of the international supply chain. However, digital infrastructures
innovation in international trade (DTI) has not reached the implementation phase. We are interested to analyse digital trade infrastructures
innovation process based on its
innovation system. The dynamic of
innovation system influences the speed of
innovation process. We argue that the blockages and unblocking
strategy of DTI
innovation process can be clearly identified if the
innovation system is examined by looking at two levels of analysis, which are structural, related to changes in system’s structure (e.g., actors, networks, governance) and functional, related to the ability of such system to perform certain functions towards achieving its objectives. To the knowledge of the author, there is no theoretical lens which discusses activities and events happened in DTI
innovation system to a detailed breakdown of its structural or functional changes. Mainly the existing studies only focus on using the
innovation system analysis as the analytical tool for directing
innovation policy and neglect the collective action process that is very relevant with characteristics of DI development. Therefore, the research objective is to create and apply a conceptual framework, to identify the unblocking
strategy for digital trade infrastructures
innovation process by looking at structural and functional analysis of the
innovation system. We develop conceptual framework namely Structural-Functional Analysis Framework, based on the desk research. We evaluate the framework through a longitudinal IT
innovation case study on EU funded project. Documents analysis and interviews are employed as data collection methods. From the framework evaluation, this study reports that the combination of analyses concerning structural changes and functional performance of an
innovation system is capable to provide richer explanation on issues that limit an
innovation system to further develop the DI
innovation, a
strategy that can be done to mobilise the
innovation process, and the DI
innovation process itself.

▼ The proposed research aspires to provide new insight on issues of applied Roadmapping and advance the state of the art in Roadmapping and its practice. It provides a conceptual model and an integrated process framework for the development of a Third Generation, Meso-level, Co-innovation Dynamic Roadmapping (from now on called ‘Dynamic Roadmapping’), which integrates policy, research, industry, and organisational roadmapping methodologies, in order to manage the development and adoption of systemic innovations in complex domains. It has been developed to meet the needs of increasingly complex systemic innovations where multiple organisations are involved as co-innovators and many other intermediaries and decision makers need to be included in the innovation adoption process. These types of innovations are usually driven by the interplay of multi-dimensional and cross-impacting factors derived from changes in social, market, economic, political and technology systems. Thus, the ‘Dynamic Roadmapping’ does not presuppose a single desired future for complex domains, but several futures, based on the complementary strategic perspectives of inter-dependent stakeholders, which need to be contextualised and negotiated at various sectoral, national and regional levels in order to be adopted. The ‘Dynamic Roadmapping’ approach supports the achievement of the realisation of the desired futures through two main components: a ‘co-innovation group’ and an ‘observatory function’. The co-innovation group is formed from all the necessary co-innovators, adopters, decision makers and users that are needed in order for the innovations to be developed and adopted. Their function is predominately ‘normative’ describing “what they want to happen” and “how” it will happen. The observatory function provides foresight and sense making methodologies to the co-innovation group, in order to constantly review and adapt their roadmaps in light of the emerging changes that can impact the roadmaps’ realisation and adoption. A conceptual model and its theoretical grounding have been built in order to bridge support for roadmapping activities among different innovative communities (e.g. in policy, research, industry and practice) and foster their collaboration via stakeholders’ innovation networks. The proposed conceptual model and its process framework have been evaluated in a case study in order to establish its validity in the European context and provide implications to theory and practice. A pilot of this framework is first implemented for the area of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). The impact of this research is: - Managing uncertainty in Future planning - Managing and implementing emergent Roadmaps for systemic innovations - Monitoring and adapt the produced Roadmaps according to change factors in emerging reality - Ensure their adoption in complex domain This research work has been funded by an EU Marie-Curry Fellowship grant via the DYRECT project no. 255182. The proposed integrated framework has been adopted by the EU TEL-Map project (in…

▼ As technology is the driving force of innovation, connecting the innovation process to the
technology strategy is essential. It is also important to recognize the need to capture ideas
generated from the innovation process and shape them into transactional assets in order to
create commercial value. Therefore, connecting the three areas of Innovation, Technology
Strategy, and Intellectual Property Management is necessary. Innovation, with a focus on
cutting edge technology, is driving and continuously development of the Aerospace and
Defense (A&D) industry. As future products are expected to have more requirements of
customization, companies in the A&D industry need to be adaptable, more agile, and ready to
adopt new technologies. These changes also demand new ways of handling IP, due to changing
corporate strategies.
Based on a multiple embedded case study on a single organization the question of how
companies, within the A&D industry, can capture commercial value from innovation through
alignment with existing technology strategies and intellectual property management was
answered. The study found that an alignment between innovation, technology strategy, and
intellectual property management is what enables the creation, and the ability to capture
commercial value for companies within the industry. The study further found the need for a
common definition and objective of innovation, both in research and within the host company.
Three different types of innovation processes were found, where a funnel structure was the
most common. The competence composition of a decision-making council was shown to be of
great importance for identifying crucial aspects of potential innovations.
In addition, the study also found that, in order for the innovation process to support the
technology strategy, an innovation strategy needs to be established. To ensure the capturing of
commercial value from the innovation process, intellectual property management needs to be
incorporated in the innovation process.

▼ The approach of âBusiness Platformâ, attempts to demonstrate that nowadays, industries can establish innovations together, by means of formal exchange of competencies between âa leader firm and its complementorsâ. So, strategical gains for several organizations of a sector are obtained, through a competitive and differentiated product. In this way, the general objective of the research consisted in elaborating a model of âFlex-fuel platform in Brazilâ, based on exchange of competencies among involved organizations (suppliers of Flex Fuel technology and automakers). The methodology of the research was qualitative and exploratory with techniques of grounded theory and thematic content analyses of five deep interviews made with suppliers of Flex Fuel technology and automakers. The Flex Fuel technology, on intervieweeâs perception was considered a factor of expansion of present and future innovations for the Brazilian auto industry. This work came to a mixed grid of analysis, with categories from interviewâs route and three more open categories related to âBusiness Platformâ theory. The Flex Fuel technology as âBusiness Platformâ presented the following results: There were changes on flex-fuel engine architecture related to its components. Technology architecture can be considered integral and stable, but small changes were made from the previous engine, that interfered on carâs performance and on its demand. The Flex Fuel technology rose from a strong exchange of competencies among âmodulesâ (suppliers of Flex Fuel technology and automakers). The interviewees also stated the existence of co-design on Flex Fuelâs development and application. The power of automakers is relevant on architecture of âFlex-Fuel platformâ because of its leadership position in the automotive chain. This fact allowed automakers to standardize of components provided by systemists (first tier suppliers) and subsystemists (second tier suppliers). At the end, a model of âFlex-fuel platformââ and a conceptual grid of interrelationship were elaborated. The conclusion was that the âFlex-fuel platformââ is driven by automakers that hold the engine architecture as a central element. High value innovation as Flex Fuel technology, demands partnership and standardization of âcomplementorsâ (suppliers of technology and small firms). The evidence was that âFlex-fuel platformââ has the engine as driving element of: creating innovations, competition and adaptation of âcomplementorsâ, indicating the existence of âFlex-fuel platformââ.

▼ The phenomenon of Research and
Technology Organizations (RTOs) has been around since the early
1930s. Most countries or regions now have their own RTOs that where originally founded to assist
local industries and organizations in the development and implementation of technologies and
products. In current times the
innovation and research services that the RTOs aim to deliver are
increasingly coming under pressure due to an ever‐changing environment. Due to technological
developments, globalization and the changing roles of competitors RTOs need to take notice of these
changes and seek out viable strategies in which they are able to fulfil their mission and the critical
role that they play within the national context. At the moment these changes lead to more and more
questions concerning the relevance and justifiability of the large sums of government funds
supporting RTOs in their endeavours to fulfil their roles. In this paper we will utilize Porter’s Five
Forces model and
innovation system theory to assess the position of four European RTOs and
generate insights into viable strategies that will allow the RTOs to continue their endeavours to drive
innovation and economic growth. For the foreseeable future the results indicate that there are two general strategies that the RTOs can pursue. They can either pursue the increased legitimization to assure government funding in the future or they can commercialize and decrease the social aspects of their current role. Depending on the
strategy the RTOs decide to follow, a gap will be created in the knowledge routs of the current NIS that will need to be filled. From a policy viewpoint, the governments will need to decide whether they want the RTOs to oil the NIS interactions, generate knowledge or do both. In either case the alignment of mentalities between RTO management and local governments seems to be key to the future survival and performance of RTOs.

▼ The production environments of today are not the same as the production environments of yesterday. The intensification of globalization and increase in market turbulence over the past forty years has exposed the limits of order (e.g., efficiency, predictability, and control) with those of un-order (e.g., emergence, non-linearity, and experimentation). The implication is a need to rethink the nature of the firm and that of
innovation.
Such a focus is particularly acute in the context of the established firm, which must remain nimble and adaptive to be able to create new competencies, while simultaneously exploiting but entangled in existing competencies, i.e., innovation’s paradox. Effectively innovating in this context requires more than just the ability to generate new ideas, put strong leaders in place, and provide extensive resources; it also requires a deep competency in managing what may be termed the invisible obvious – the social and material assumptions, meanings, and affordances that are embedded in and guide organizational activity.
What is the invisible obvious in the established organization? This dissertation explores a possible explanation and its implications for
innovation and strategic management. Specifically, I conducted a year-long immersive study at the Intel Corporation that examined how people interpret
innovation and how those interpretations are entangled with and make up the core competencies of the firm. From this, I found three markedly different conceptions of
innovation that drove these entanglements: technologic, economic, and humanistic. I term these conceptions
innovation frames and explicate the nature and dynamics of the concept using my ethnographic interviews and a case study based on a newly formed disruptive
technology that emerged from within Intel. I tie this newfound concept of
innovation frames to the fields of
strategy and
innovation and argue for a shift in their theoretical and practical conversations that center on the relationship between interpretation and organizing – a link made visible through the examination of individual and the firm-level
innovation frames.
In conclusion, I develop a strategic model for
innovation, the L’oer Model, that identifies multiple
innovation pathways around which firms can create new competencies in the face of innovation’s paradox. A redefining of the firm as a sociomaterial entanglement, the model reshapes our thinking on the question of
innovation and suggests that the long-term survival of a firm depends on managing the invisible obvious. The takeaway is that disruption sits not at the fuzzy front end of
innovation but at the nexus of
innovation,
strategy, and organizing.

▼ Little academic research has been conducted in the area of open innovation as a strategy used by SMEs in their innovation process. In addition, small companies are subjected to liabilities to smallness and newness, for which open innovation could be the solution. This thesis focuses on two small Swedish high– tech companies. On the one hand we concentrate our studies on a software consultancy company providing programming services, on the other hand, the thesis also look on a small nano–technology company creating their product around material science innovation. The purpose of this study is to investigate what strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats these specific high-tech companies perceive in using open innovation in their business model. For accomplishing the investigations we have conducted two case studies. Through a review of relevant literature, a theoretical framework was first constructed, up on which we based the formulation of open-ended questions, to serve as a foundation for further data gathering. For the first case study, data was collected by interviewing the case firm’s CEO and for the second case study we used the participant observation method. The collected data was analysed and discussed in comparison to the literature. Additionally, the findings of each case were schematically evaluated by performing a SWOT analysis on open innovation, as observed by each of our two case firms and related to literature findings. Conclusions. We conclude that small firms are hampered in their innovation and commercialisation process is limitations related to smallness and newness. It was identified that, although limited by financial and structural constrains, small companies are able to use a considerable amount of open innovation aspects in their business model. These being especially those that are less resource demanding, such as employee involvement and co-creation with the customer or with other sources to innovation, like universities. It was also recognized that, while being open when capitalizing on certain aspects of open innovation to boost their innovation and commercialization process, the case firms also recognize the importance for especially small firms to protect the core technology knowledge from being leaked externally, as this is the vital component of their existence.

▼ This dissertation seeks to relieve theoretical tension between organizational ambidexterity and network perspectives by developing a contingent model of firm-level exploration and exploitation. The central proposition of this model is firms need to both effectively explore and exploit to succeed but that inter-organizational network features supporting one of these activities are detrimental to the other. This model indicates firms can resolve this apparent paradox by configuring their networks contingent on the particular goals of these networks. In the context of
technology commercialization, I hypothesize firms should benefit by configuring their inter-organizational networks to gather novel information when seeking to discover new technologies but gather redundant information when seeking to bring these new discoveries to market. I test these hypotheses with a unique panel data set of firms active in publishing, patenting, and commercializing technologies in the field of green chemistry. My empirical results largely support these hypothesized relationships.

▼ Innovative high-technology SMEs have become a major influencing factor in the success of any modern economy and they increasingly compete in the globalised world with limited resources. Previous research on SMEs at firm level has always taken into consideration the constraints of the resources that an SME faces and the implications of this on their performance and business growth. SMEs have to develop their own unique skills and capabilities, allocating their limited resources appropriately to be able to respond to the changes in the external business environment that pose risks to the success of their innovation and its commercialisation. Having an innovation strategy is very important: to have a clear goal and a path to achieve the set goal. This helps high-technology SMEs to decide which factors can influence the success of their innovations, leading to business growth by developing dynamic capabilities to respond to the external changes by allocating their resources at their disposal. This thesis is an empirical analysis of innovation strategy and its role in the business growth of high-technology SMEs. This research study is carried out at firm level. It draws on Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capability theory to explore innovation strategy factors contributing to the better performance of the firm. Four hypotheses were proposed based on the theoretical framework developed through the literature review. They were tested using empirical data. The primary data were collected using quantitative methods through survey questionnaire. Data was collected from 106 high-technology SMEs in the UK. Technological factor, marketing factor, entrepreneurial factor and risk from the business environment were identified as four important factors which are part of an innovation strategy. The results of the study suggest three revised factors: technology, entrepreneurial and government-related risk factors. The initial risk related to business environment was amended to government-related risk factors based on the measurement variables which were loaded to the factor. However, one hypothesis based on the marketing factor failed to support the proposed positive influence on business growth and hence rejected. This calls for further research on the marketing factor in high-technology SMEs. This study recognises the reason behind this paradoxical result, which could be the nature of the high-technology firms participating in this study, which are more dependent on technology-push rather than marketing pull and they do not confirm with the established norms of marketing for the business growth of their firm. This study contributes to the development of knowledge and practice at multiple levels. The research developed a theoretical framework to establish the innovation strategy factors and its influence on business growth and this is validated through empirical data. At the practice level, the results of the study could be used by high-technology SMEs in the UK, and any other high-technology SMEs which are based in a similar economy…

▼ This study investigates how firms navigate technological changes over time. Specifically, we determine whether firms follow a consistent
strategy in regards to when they time their entry into technological waves. Resulting performance implications of these actions are also measured. The theoretical underpinnings of this study lie at the intersection of the
technology literature, the learning school, firm evolutionary theory, and the resource-based view of the firm. Past studies have added clarity as to how firms behave within a single technological wave; however, investigations regarding firm actions over successive waves are needed if we are to truly understand which firm actions lead to long-term success.
This study fills the research gap by investigating firm timing patterns over multiple successive waves of
technology and the resulting long-term performance implications of these actions. Further, this study examines timing efforts over both competence enhancing (incremental) and competence destroying (architectural) cycles. The findings indicate that while technological follower firms are able to consistently repeat their timing
strategy, technological leaders have a much more difficult time in repeating early entry timing. Repeated leadership entry was found to be difficult in both incremental and architectural cycles. Characteristics of those leaders able to repeat leadership entry are provided.
While consistent entry timing was not found to impact market share, it was found to benefit firms by reducing their hazard rate. This hazard rate reduction for timing entry consistency, whether it is as a leader or as a follower, was observed during both incremental and architectural technological changes.

▼ As blockchain technology became more established in the financial arena, federal health IT officials, vendors and developers started looking at its potential and its use in the healthcare sector. Lately, there has been a major hype around the potential of the technology. It is described as a disruptive technology that could enable business model innovation with increased transparency, new models of partnerships and possible disintermediation. Business modelling was recognized as a potential tool to help the healthcare sector to determine a technology implementation strategy by involving all the important stakeholders in a value-driven dialogue about the way in which the technology should be utilized. This research focused on exploring the potential of the blockchain technology for business model innovation with the use of business model patterns as a theoretical construct. From the scientific perspective, research contributed to a better understanding of the role of business model patterns as a construct with multipurpose character. The construct was used in a role of classification device to gain an understanding over the technology associated business model logics and in a role of instruments of scientific inquiry to explore potential technology implications. A two-way relationship between the disruptive technology and business models was considered. As a result, tokenization was proposed as a new business model pattern, specific to the blockchain technology. Moreover, value patterns (patient empowerment, privacy by design, security by design, transparency by design) were recognized as an important matter that is potentially impacting future business models. In the second step, business model patterns were evaluated in the context of e-Health industry specific moderators. A Discussion with the implication of the technology from the business model innovation perspective was provided.

▼ Recent technological advances and the consequent social and economic changes present new opportunities and threats to organisations in various industries and have disrupted traditional business models, prompting the need for entities to adopt digital strategies to survive, compete, and/or operate effectively in a digital world. This research explores the purpose, positioning and the process of developing digital strategies. This seems to be the first study to investigate qualitatively the various conceptions of digital strategy. Additionally, an adapted design-led innovation framework is proposed to aid practitioners in digital strategy derivation.

▼ The application of gamification to enterprise business challenges has become a significant area of interest among researchers and practitioners over the past five years. This interest is driven by the perceived need for more effective business management approaches in an environment where workplace and market disengagement is common, and where technology is disrupting traditional approaches to organisational strategy, design and development. Limited by a lack of rigorous research, industry need for an informed approach to applying gamification in enterprises has become necessary to advance the domain. This research aims to: (a) identify effective approaches to enterprise gamification grounded in both rigorous research and industry experience; and (b) identify potential tools and frameworks that may assist in advancing the research domain and the practice of enterprise gamification. To this purpose a design-science approach was adopted due to its focus on innovative problem-solving in enterprise information systems, and its emphasis on the production of practical research artefacts as a contribution to knowledge and theory. The core research question in this study is: What are the key success factors in creating stakeholder value with enterprise gamification? This work examines how organisations have been attempting to create business value with the use of gamification. Four distinct but interconnected research modules were subsequently developed, using a mix of epistemological and methodological approaches to address the different facets of the research question. From a conceptual perspective, the first research module examines how enterprise gamification can be informed by design disciplines to develop a holistic design framework, methodology, and design tools. The next research module undertook an empirical study of over 300 examples of enterprise gamification to develop a taxonomy consisting of five core elements and 41 sub-elements. Following on from this is the third research module which consists of a survey of 25 global organisations on their direct experiences with the design, development and implementation of enterprise gamification projects. A combined total of 11.5 million users were affected by the projects in this survey which represents a substantial representation and an original piece of work. The final research module is a conceptual study of the capabilities required by an organisation to create and implement an effective enterprise gamification project. A capability framework was consequently developed by synthesising the findings derived from the combination of the preceding research modules. The overall results of this study highlight the need for a rigorous and holistic approach towards gamification project development involving the triage of design, technology and management. This study’s four research artefacts and corresponding findings offer a contribution to this research gap. The findings of this research, as well as an accompanying reflection on the business ethics of…

▼ The emerging knowledge economy necessitates rapid skills development, to ensure that organisations sustain a competitive edge. Rapid skills acquisition would enable organisations, whether public or private sector, to take advantage of new emerging opportunities and improve performance by ensuring that their employees are well equipped with relevant skills. The South African labour market has, however, been engulfed by both a skills shortage and a brain drain, which has worsened performance in the public sector – as is evident from the widespread public protests. In this study, the researcher conducted an explorative investigation to gain an in-depth understanding of factors that could influence e-Learning diffusion as an innovative way of facilitating rapid skills acquisition.
In order to conduct this investigation, the researcher employed qualitative techniques in the form of a case study, using grounded theory analysis techniques. Grounded theory analysis results enabled the researcher to formulate propositions. Furthermore, these propositions were used to formulate important factors and questionnaire items that were used to test proposed findings, using a survey research design.
Findings revealed that the public sector, as with society at large, is adopting sociallyorientated computing practices, to open up social platform integration into the employee learning experience. Findings reveal that social platform integration would be fruitful, if the entire instructional design was based on social constructivist, epistemological principles, with the appropriate social technology.

▼ Metrology is a concept that is not known by many, it is the science of measurement. For such an unknown concept it has significant importance to both the manufacturing companies and the customers as they both need to be sure that the final products are correct and of high quality. Therefore many companies have a quality system within their company to measure and calibrate their instruments. To ensure that the measuring instruments used are correct they need to be calibrated towards national and international standards. If you cannot do that at the company the service needs to be purchased externally. SKF, Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB, has a metrology service that they use for their own manufacturing that they have sold externally before and want to start selling again. The purpose of this study was to investigate what the main value drivers are in the metrology market and based on those values create a service offer. To investigate the purpose a case study of SKF’s metrology service was made and interviews were performed on nine manufacturing companies within the western region of Sweden, with focus on Gothenburg. The theoretical framework is based on the market positioning strategy by Lovelock & Wirtz (2011). The market positioning strategy includes a market section, an internal section and a competitor section. These parts can be seen all through the thesis as it guided the authors through the process. The empirical findings show the interview answers, the value drivers and the competitor response profile.
In the empirical chapter it was discovered that accreditation and accuracy are the two value drivers that the customers find most important in metrology. Those value drivers does both Mätcentrum and most of the competitors have. The empirical also show that the suppliers have a strong position in the market and can offer similar or more value than Mätcentrum. The conclusion is that it would be difficult for Mätcentrum to start selling their service externally again. This is due to the competition, mainly from existing competitors and suppliers in combination with the lack of differentiating elements in their offer. However there is still an opportunity for profitability if the communication of the values is adjusted after each customer’s need and received successfully.

▼ There is an increased need for innovation activities in companies today due to mounting pressure from external factors increasing the urgency for renewal and agility. Digitalisation of processes, products and services sets completely new requirements for competence but also changes the value creation and competitiveness. In recent years, management focus has shifted from optimization of production processes, logistics and supply chains, to being more oriented towards an innovation focus, promoting business renewal and innovative business models. The purpose of this study is to examine how board evaluations are used to improve board work and to study how well boards guide the innovation ambitions of their companies. Furthermore, the aim of this study is to develop a framework that can provide a holistic perspective of both control and strategic innovation aspects. Results from a comprehensive literature review and analysis of board evaluation data indicate that there is a lack of innovation inclusion in board evaluations and a clear lack of statistical approach when constructing surveys. The result of the study is a proposed framework that provides guidance for designing an innovation inclusive board evaluation tools and recommendations for providing actionable insights to clients, backed up by statistical models such as regression analysis and consistency analysis that has the possibility to scale into a digital assessment tool.

The Technical Centre of Mechanical Engineering is one of the centres of technological competence in the Mechanical Industry. Its objective is to identify the process of management of the technology needed for its activity in innovation support. After having characterised mechanical industry in a meso economic approach, we propose a model of activity of the technological competence centre, illustrated by the Cetim example. On this basis, innovation management is analysed as a formalised operational process of the innovation support activity in the geographical and technological territory of the technological competence centre, using tools and processes of technology management. The process from idea to finished product is split into 3 steps: idea to object conception, feasibility regarding a first market target and industrialisation. This sequential model was completed by a global model which linked strategy to the implementation of an innovated project.R&D process is composed of 4 steps of a repeated cycle: technological marketing, management of the project portfolio, R&D production and enhanced value. Indicators help in evaluating performance on the 4 axes of the activity model using codification of innovation projects in the information system. This can be also used to follow core competence evolution.

In the current world the importance of the economy and the management of knowledge are fundamental and essential elements of development and competitiveness in companies and their regions. One of the structural policies to promote the link between innovation and business development aims to foster the creation and expansion of Science and Technology Parks (STP) and their incubators, instruments dedicated to spin-offs and start-ups of new businesses. In this project, we analyze a portfolio of international STP’s, which have a diversity of practices and experiences, due to the acculturation of the regions and countries where they are situated, they are influenced by the economic integration, social, cultural and political effects at a global level, as a consequence of globalization.
This project aims to compare different STP models based on international best practices, within the Portuguese reality. Our choice for this project is Taguspark, in Oeiras as it is pioneer STP in Portugal.
This project will evaluate the positioning of Taguspark, in an integrated manner, focusing on the main aspects that are its strategic orientation, both in its internal and external view, and how it relates to its environment.
Thus, we present several measures to be…

identificando e implementando diversas melhorias no processo.
Companies need to see their performance and results continually improved
in quality and efficiency. When embedded in the industrial environment there seems
no doubt that the applied methodology, the innovation and the capital investment in
the medium and long term are crucial for the growth of the company. The several
strategies and methodologies that are applied in the Lean philosophy emerge as a
powerful methodology for process improvement.
This study is based on the selection and application of the methodology of
Lean tools in an industrial unit.
It was selected and applied the tool 5S in an enterprise who processes and
sales flat glass.
With the implementation of the tool 5S the waste has been reduced and has
also been identified and implemented several improvements in the process.
Given the evident observed improvements, the company decided to extend
the process to all areas of the company always seeking continuous improvement.

▼ Andersson, TW ORCiD: 0000-0003-3909-5548
This research is about how Strategic Project Management (SPM) is applied to develop project strategies for incremental and radical Product Innovation Projects (PIPs), or in short PIPs. Product innovation is important to all manufacturing firms, and especially to manufacturing firms exposed to rapidly changing customer and technology trends, and operating in industries with considerable complexity and uncertainty. This is particularly true for large firms with more than 500 employees in fast-moving volume-manufacture industries, such as consumer-electronics, automobile, industrial and medical product industries. These types of firms have significant investments in both incremental and radical product innovation as they view their innovation capabilities as a core competence crucial to creating and sustaining long term competitive advantage. These innovation investments are reflected in their annual Research and Development (R&D) expenditures. According to the European Union, the 2,500 firms with the largest direct R&D investments in the world spent 696 Billion Euro on R&D in the year 2015 to 2016 alone and had net sales of 17,687 Billion Euro. Therefore, large firms such as these seek to excel at managing product innovation. Yet, research found that product innovation failure rates range from 35 percent for healthcare products to 49 percent for fast-moving consumer products. Research has also identified that sound project management of PIPs is important to product innovation success. Previous research on product innovation management and strategic management has primarily concentrated on broad firm-level aspects. However, most product innovation efforts are implicitly or explicitly organised as projects. The literature suggests that project managers are the new strategic leaders who take responsibility for product innovation and proposes that by applying strategic project management practices PIP managers can significantly increase the likelihood of product innovation success. Yet, the literature is virtually silent on the theory and practice of strategic project management for PIPs. Therefore, this research responds to the call for research on project strategy development by addressing the overarching research question: What are the roles of strategic project management in product innovation projects?
This research takes a contemporary strategy-as-practice and project-as-practice approach and applies a case study methodology focused on PIPs within large innovative parent firms. Thus, product innovation projects are the unit-of-analysis from the view of PIP managers. This research explores how project strategies are developed using a questionnaire combined with in-depth follow-up interviews of thirty PIP managers. Denmark is the selected geographical area for this research as it is ranked high on several innovation indices. For example, Denmark is ranked sixth in the world with 3.1 percent of its Gross Domestic Product invested in R&D. It has high densities of large…

▼ For any given firm in any industry, market success is a desire that all strive for, and this is achieved by outsmarting competition through brilliant strategies. To develop these strategies many firms resort to innovation, and as such innovation is the key to developing better strategies for market success.
It is with this acknowledgement that this thesis delves into the history of LM Ericsson in order to unearth the innovation strategies that lay behind the company‟s success during the last decade of the 19th century. To achieve this mission, we ask ourselves such questions as to what was unique with Lars Magnus Ericsson that he relayed to the company that ensured success. We even try to find out if there were any technology related aspects that facilitated this success and finally take a look at the company‟s business environment to find out if the environment played any roles which can be attributed to the company‟s success.
Getting the above mentioned tasks accomplished required the application of appropriate methodological steps. Owing to the historical nature of the study and the data to be collected all indications were leaning towards a qualitative study based on secondary data with a case study as the most suitable design given that the aim of study was to explore LM Ericsson‟s innovation strategies. But this study‟s relevance is tied to the relationship with theory wherein relevance is proclaimed if the empirical data collected can somehow be related to the theories used in the study. With respect to the issue of relevance, an inductive approach was suitable as we sought to make some theoretical inferences out of the findings arrived at. The application of the chosen approach edged the thesis closer towards achieving the stated aim of study. An analysis was therefore done with the help of relevant theories among them open innovation, path dependence, competitive strategy as well as theory on networks.
The conclusion arrived at was that Lars Magnus Ericsson possessed a raft of unique capabilities, among them innate engineering skills, handiness, and a host of other personal attributes such as thoroughness and cautiousness. All these traits together with
the favourable domestic business environment incorporating limited number of competitors and the low level of technology at that time worked in favour of the company. In addition it is also important to note that the path dependent nature of the telephone technology as well as the lack of patents in telephone technology in the Nordic region, allowed the founder of the company to borrow foreign knowledge for use in developing products. But perhaps the most outstanding of all the success factors, personal qualities aside, was LM Ericsson‟s collaboration with Henrik Cedergren‟s SAT (Stockholms Allmänna Telefonaktiebolag). There is no doubt Lars Magnus Ericsson would have succeeded thanks to his innate skills which were instrumental in the production of quality products, but he would probably not have been as successful as he was.…

▼ The cyber world is growing as more information is converted from analogue to digital form. While convenience has been the main driver for this change little effort has been made on securing the data. Data breaches are growing in number and each breach is growing in severity. Combined with regulatory pressure organizations are starting to realize the importance of security. The increased threat level is also driving the security market for more potent solutions and artificial intelligence (AI) have in recent years been implemented to enhance the capabilities of security technologies. The thesis aims to investigate the adoption of AI enabled cybersecurity technologies within the financial industry which is often perceived as the market leader regarding security. Using a qualitative method through a multiple case study, valuable insights were gained regarding how firms are working with security and what needs they have. To identify factors that influence the rate of diffusion of AI enabled security technologies the diffusion of innovation theory combined with the TOE framework was used in this study. The thesis has contributed to the field of innovation management by enriching an area within IT innovation management by bridging the gap between security innovation and AI innovation. The study revealed that environmental factors, such as regulations and threat landscape, are forcing organizations to take action and control both how organizations work with security but also what technological attributes are perceived as advantageous. Detection and automation are two technological attributes that the companies are looking for to fill their needs. AI solutions are already being implemented to increase detection and automation we believe that the rate of adoption for AI enabled security innovation will only continue to grow. The results and findings contribute to an expanded understanding on the factors that affect adoption of AI security innovations within the financial industry.

The Program FX-2, which aims the renew of the Brazilian's aircraft fleet, and the transfer of technology to local enterprises, have been presented as capable to generate two collateral effects: based on these transfers, enhance these companies in order to produce and exchange aircrafts; and the economical and technological spin-off of this enhancement to the civil sector. From the systematization of academic, official and journalistic natured secondary information, this work seeks to analyze the possibility of occurrence of these two events, which, might be responsible to the occurrence of spin-offs from military to the civilian economy. The main line of the discussion attempts to comprehend the process of technology transfer to less developed countries, and the phenomenon of spin-off on a economy such as
the Brazilian one - characterized by extreme distinct aspects from those where is supposed the event could be observed.…
