A Internet, conforme a conhecemos, foi projetada com base na pilha de protocolos TCP/IP, que foi desenvolvida nos anos 60 e 70 utilizando um paradigma centrado nos endereços individuais de cada máquina (denominado host-centric). Este paradigma foi extremamente bem-sucedido em interligar máquinas através de encaminhamento baseado no endereço IP. Estudos recentes demonstram que, parte significativa do tráfego atual da Internet centra-se na transferência de conteúdos, em vez das tradicionais aplicações de rede, conforme foi originalmente concebido. Surgiram então novos modelos de comunicação, entre eles, protocolos de rede ponto-a-ponto, onde cada máquina da rede pode efetuar distribuição de conteúdo (denominadas de redes peer-to-peer), para melhorar a distribuição e a troca de conteúdos na Internet. Por conseguinte, nos últimos anos o paradigma host-centric começou a ser posto em causa e apareceu uma nova abordagem de Redes Centradas na Informação (ICN - information-centric networking). Tendo em conta que a Internet, hoje em dia, basicamente é uma rede de transferência de conteúdos e informações, porque não centrar a sua evolução neste sentido, ao invés de comunicações host-to-host? O paradigma de Rede Centrada no Conteúdo (CCN - Content Centric Networking) simplifica a solução de determinados problemas de segurança relacionados com a arquitetura TCP/IP e é uma das principais propostas da nova abordagem de Redes Centradas na Informação. Um dos principais problemas do modelo TCP/IP é a proteção do conteúdo. Atualmente, para garantirmos a autenticidade e a integridade dos dados partilhados na rede, é necessário garantir a segurança do repositório e do caminho que os dados devem percorrer até ao seu destino final. No entanto, a contínua ineficácia perante os ataques de negação de serviço praticados na Internet, sugere a necessidade de que seja a própria infraestrutura da rede a fornecer mecanismos para os mitigar. Um dos principais pilares do paradigma de comunicação da CCN é focalizar-se no próprio conteúdo e não na sua localização física. Desde o seu aparecimento em 2009 e como consequência da evolução e adaptação a sua designação mudou atualmente para Redes de Conteúdos com Nome (NNC – Named Network Content). Nesta dissertação, efetuaremos um estudo de uma visão geral da arquitetura CCN, apresentando as suas principais características, quais os componentes que a compõem e como os seus mecanismos mitigam os tradicionais problemas de comunicação e de segurança. Serão efetuadas experiências com o CCNx, que é um protótipo composto por um conjunto de funcionalidades e ferramentas, que possibilitam a implementação deste paradigma. O objetivo é analisar criticamente algumas das propostas existentes, determinar oportunidades, desafios e perspectivas para investigação futura.

L’évaluation des modèles hydrologiques est généralement basée sur des comparaisons des séries de débit observées et simulées à l’aide de critères de performance tels que le Nash-Sutcliffe Efficientcy. Bien que cette approach fournisse des mesures pertinentes de la performance prédictive d’un modèle, elle ne fournit que très peu d’informations sur les raisons d’une bonne ou d’une mauvaise performance. Gupta et al. (2008) ont proposé d’utiliser plutôt des signatures hydrologiques, des indicateurs qui caractérisent le comportement d’un bassin versant. Étant donné que les signatures hydrologiques peuvent être liées aux processus hydrologiques, la comparaison des signatures hydrologiques observées et simulées permet l’évaluation du modèle tout en offrant des diagnostics, i.e. des indications sur les processus hydrologiques qui y sont bien ou mal représentés.Dans cette thèse de doctorat, nous nous concentrons sur l’interprétation et le pouvoir diagnostique des signatures hydrologiques et comment celles-ci peuvent être utilisées pour guider l’amélioration d’un modèle distribué. Nous présentons la construction d’un jeu de signatures hydrologiques, utilisant uniquement des données largement disponibles – précipitations, débit et température de l’air – pour caractériser le fonctionnement hydrologique de 4 sous-bassins versants (Sud-Est de la France) et 10 bassins versants de montagne à influence nival (Southern Sierra, Californie, États-Unis). Des signatures hydrologiques existantes et des nouvelles sont sélectionnées et/ou développées. Collectivement, elles permettent de caractériser le comportement de bassins versants dans une grande variété de contextes hydro-climatiques. En nous concentrant sur les processus de neige, des mesures de neige supplémentaires nous permettent d’évaluer la pertinence des signatures hydrologiques dédiées aux processus nivaux. Par ailleurs, le modèle J2000 est déployé sur le bassin versant de l’Ardèche et une analyse de sensibilité est réalisée afin de comprendre comment les signatures hydrologiques sont liées aux paramètres du modèle. Cela nous permet de déterminer la façon dont elles doivent être interprétées dans le contexte du modèle J2000 de l’Ardèche et permet l’évaluation de leur pouvoir diagnostic. Enfin, en combinant les résultats de l’analyse de sensibilité avec des comparaisons entre signatures observées et simulées, nous entreprenons un diagnostic approfondi du modèle afin de dériver et tester des recommandations pour son amélioration. Nous identifions des déficiences du modèle, principalement liées au stockage de l’eau souterraine et des sols, mettant en évidence des problèmes de représentation spatiale des propriétés géologiques et pédologiques.

▼ In this thesis, I examine how the corporate financial information environment is shaped by the financial media. The thesis consists of three essays. In the first essay, I examine the role of voluntary company-initiated disclosures about firm financial performance as a stimulus for coverage in the financial press. I provide evidence that media coverage is affected by firm level disclosure management. Specifically, a firm's issuance of press releases attracts more media articles about the firm leading to greater abnormal returns and trading volumes. I find that there is a spike of media articles on the same day and one trading day following firms' press releases. I use a unique experiment, which differentiates between the online and print versions of the Wall Street Journal, to establish a causal relation between press releases and media coverage. My findings challenge the common assumption in the literature that media coverage is exogenous to the firm. In the second essay, I find that the financial media plays a significant role in enriching a firm's information environment by moderating the tone of corporate press releases. Using textual analysis, I show that the press moderates both the positive and negative tone of corporate press releases. However, the effect is asymmetric with the media disproportionately downplaying the tone of favourable corporate press releases, in line with the premise that management's highly positive news disclosures are less convincing. In addition, I find that there is an abnormal market response to the linguistic content of financial media articles rather than to the content of corporate press releases, suggesting that the tone of press-issued information is more value relevant to market participants compared to that of management's disclosures. Overall, this study offers robust evidence supporting the view that the financial media plays an important role as an information intermediary. In the third and last essay, I investigate the information dissemination and information creation roles of the financial media by examining whether the rebroadcasting of firm-initiated news (parroting) and the creation of original information by the media influence the stock market reaction to news disclosures differently. Using textual analysis, I calculate the tone expressed in corporate press releases and related articles in the financial media, and further distinguish between parroted (from the press release) and non-parroted (i.e., original) media tonal language. I provide evidence supporting a dual role of the press that affects price formation through both its information dissemination and information creation roles. However, my findings are consistent with press-generated information having the most significant impact on market reaction. My results also indicate that there is an asymmetric market effect, with negative original media tone being more value relevant to market participants compared to managerial and media-parroted (positive and negative) tonal language. I och med införandet av BIM-metodiken inom byggbranschen, har flera frågor fötts kring reformationen av arbetsmetodiken inom projekteringsprocessen. En av dessa är frågan om content; grafik - och informationsinnehållet i en BIM-modell. Rapportens syfte har varit att, via analys av befintliga contenthanteringstrategier, frambringa rekommendationer för utformande av konsekventa arbetsmetodiker inom Revit-projekt. Mål- sättningen har varit att rekommendationerna skall bidra till förstärkning och vidareutveckling av ett företags hantering av Revit-content. Arbetet inleddes med en serie intervjuer på arkitektföretaget Tengboms Stockholmskontor. Intervjuerna utfördes med representanter för olika Revit-baserade projekt. Av dessa valdes fyra projekt ut till mer detaljerade fallstudier, där syftet var att kartlägga vilka strategier Tengbom tillämpat i sina Revit-projekt. Parallellt med intervjuerna, utfördes en litteraturstudie där information om befintliga contenthanteringsstrategier inom övriga företag och organisationer, kunde förvärvas och analyseras. Resultatet av fallstudierna på Tengbom jämfördes med de teorier som framkommit via litteraturstudien. För- och nackdelar med olika strategier inom contenthantering analyserades med utgångspunkt i olika aspekter gällande utbildning inom Revit-projektering, samt modellering och hantering av content. Slutsatsen blev att Tengbom haft den i särklass mest hållbara strategin inom den inledande fasen av företagets BIM-implementering. Flera fördelar kunde även identifieras i de övriga contenthanteringsstrategierna som analyserats. Dessa kom att utgöra en gedigen grund för de vidare rekommendationer som arbetet resulterade i.

The introduction of the BIM-methodology in the building industry has awoken several questions regarding the reformation of work methods in the project planning process. One is the question about content; graphics and information inside a Building Information Model. The purpose of this report has been to analyze existing content managing strategies, in order to create recommendations for the forming of consequent work methods in Revit projects. The goal has been to adjust the recommendations for companies willing to further develop internal work methods in the field, particularly concerning the management of Revit content. Several interviews with representatives from different Revit projects at the architectural firm Tengbom in Stockholm were conducted. Four of the Revit projects, were chosen for a more detailed case study, in order to acquire information about the company’s strategies concerning content management. Simultaneously, a literary study was executed, through which information about existing content management strategies in other companies and organizations could be obtained and analyzed. The results of the case studies at Tengbom were compared with theories acquired from the existing strategies in content management. ▼ In recent years, online information sharing platforms have opened new opportunities for people to share information and experiences with each other and with organizations that sponsor these platforms. Increasingly, data consumers, both at the organizational and at the individual level, hope to use these User-Generated Content (UGC) in their decision making. However, recent studies uncovered significant challenges associated with the interfaces used to collect high-quality UGC. While many aspects of the information quality (IQ) of UGC have been studied, the role of data structures in gathering UGC and the nature of shared content have yet to receive attention. UGC is created on online platforms with varying degrees of data structure, ranging from unstructured (e.g., open box fields) to highly structured formats (e.g., rigid and specific forms). Despite much research on UGC, we have little understanding of the appropriate degree of data structures in data collection and its impact on the quality of information. Moreover, we know that most of the produced UGC originates in the declarative memory of the contributors. Psychology literature shows that different types of memory are stored and managed differently, and that they are retrieved accordingly. Thus, we argue that the information collection interface for retrieving and collecting each type of memory should be aligned with the way that it was stored. Therefore, we posit that designing interfaces with sensitivity to human memory structures should result in improvements of the IQ of UGC. We conducted several experiments to examine differently-designed information collection interfaces for different types of information. We evaluated both data creators’ and data consumers’ perceived quality of information collection, at the individual level. The findings support our claims of the importance of these factors for information quality. This research demonstrates a connection between information system interface design and human memory, which eventually could result in changes to best practices in interface design. This could, in turn, lead to improved interaction between participants and organizations, including enhanced data creators’ self-expression, improved users’ attitudes toward UGC systems, and increased value-add from organizations’ use of UGC. ▼ Commercial content moderation (CCM) is the practice of screening of user-generated content (UGC) posted to Internet sites, social media platforms and other online outlets that encourage and rely upon such material to generate visits to and participation from users. Despite being essential to the media production cycle for these commercial websites and social media platforms as a major source of brand protection, gatekeeping and tastemaking, commercial content moderation is largely unknown outside its own industry and those that rely on it. This research endeavors to unveil the practice of commercial content moderation and to further contextualize it alongside contemporary trends of globalization, outsourcing and other economic and geospatial reconfigurations facilitated by the increasingly networked nature of the world. CCM tasks vacillate from the mind-numbingly repetitive and mundane to exposure to images and material that can be violent, disturbing and, at worst, psychologically damaging, and it requires these tasks of workers that are frequently relatively low-status and low-wage. The workers are typically further isolated because the work they do is in secret, considered an issue of brand protection by their employers. Using analysis of in-depth qualitative interviews with CCM workers in a variety of sectors coupled with techniques of Critical Discourse Analysis of industry-generated materials (e.g., websites; work solicitations), this research connects the practices of CCM to digital media economics, digital media practices and their sociopolitical, economic and ethical implications. It reports on and describes the experiences of content moderators in a number of different contexts and situations. It provides a taxonomy for understanding the worksites and practices of CCM and maps it, on theoretical grounds, to other types of digital and non-digital work, aligning it in the greater context of the ecology of social media to the end of recognizing, acknowledging and improving the conditions under which the CCM workers labor. ▼ In modern days, web search activity is regarded as an important channel through which investors can acquire information and thus influence stock market activity.Da, Engelberg, and Gao (2011) proposed Google Search Volume Index(SVI) measuring investor attention and indicated that it is positively associated with stock returns. Since Beaver (1968); Ball and Brown (1968) first investigated the relationship between earnings and the capital market response, financial accounting researchers have developed a large body of research about the information content of earnings announcement. Therefore, the objective of this study is to show the relationship between investor attention and stock market trading activity around earnings announcement. This study provides evidence using search frequency in Google and finds:(1) Abnormal Google search increases at the announcement and continues at high levels for two weeks after the announcement.(2) At the announcement and after the announcement, an increase in abnormal Google search is positively associated with stock returns and trading volume in the same period. However, due to the imperfect information received by investors prior to the announcement, individual investors have different perspectives of the upcoming earnings surprise. Thus, an increase in pre-announcement Google search causes an increase in stock trading volume, but it has no significant influence on stock returns and cannot predict the future stock prices.(3) Similarly, investors cannot acquire the sufficient information prior to the announcement, thus the higher pre-announcement search is associated with the higher trading volume, but it has no significant impact on both pre-announcement stock returns and post-announcement stock returns. Nevertheless, post-announcement returns and volume are more highly associated with the earnings surprise when post-announcement search is higher.(4) The empirical study also examines the relationship between investor attention and stock trading activity when earnings surprise is either good news or bad news. The results suggest that when companies report good news, they tend to be provide the good information in advance. Thus, the pre-announcement search is positively associated with the pre-announcement returns and trading volume, and can also predict the future returns and trading volume. In contrast, when they report bad news, the higher search are significantly associated with the returns and trading volume only at the announcement. ▼ This dissertation investigates how to motivate contributions to public information goods, characterized by non-rivalry by nature and non-excludability by choice. With the running example of Wikipedia - the online encyclopedia that grants free access to everyone and relies entirely on the inputs from volunteers, I present three designed-based empirical studies that explore how individual contributions are affected by 1) reduction in the number of collaborators, 2) private benefit, number of readers, and 3) group membership. Chapter II studies how the reduction in group size affects the collaborative behavior in contributing to Wikipedia articles. Exploiting a natural experiment at the Chinese Wikipedia, we find that the level of contribution and conflict within the group drop on articles that face a shock, whereas centralization increases. Interestingly, the impact of a shock on activity increases with shock level, whereas the impact on centralization and conflict is higher for moderate shock levels than for very small or very high shock levels. Chapter III examines how the private benefit of citation and acknowledgement and the social impact from the public goods can motivate contributions from domain experts. Using a randomized field experiment, we invite 3,974 academic economists to contribute to Wikipedia articles relevant to their researches. The results show that experts are significantly more interested in contributing when citation benefit is mentioned. Furthermore, cosine similarity between a Wikipedia article and the expert's paper abstract is the most significant factor leading to more and higher-quality contributions, indicating that better matching is a crucial factor in motivating contributions to public information goods. Chapter IV examines the potential of team-based approach on motivating individual contributions to Wikipedia. Employing a panel data set across over 9,000 Wikipedia editors and exploiting the variations in the exposure to WikiProject due to quasi-randomness in the association of Wikipedia articles to WikiProject, we find that joining a WikiProject has a sizable impact on the level of contribution, measured by both the number and size of revisions. Further analysis on the patterns in the behavior of WikiProject members indicates that the recommendation of articles can be the factor driving the impact of WikiProject. Este trabalho aborda a utilização dos sítios da World Wide Web (WWW), pelas instituições de ensino superior, para a divulgação dos seus cursos de mestrado. Especificamente, este estudo procura analisar: 1) a informação sobre mestrados que as instituições de ensino superior oferecem, nos seus sítios, aos seus visitantes; 2) até que ponto os sítios têm uma navegação funcional, permitindo ou não ao utilizador localizar rapidamente a informação sobre os mestrados; e 3) verificar se estes sítios recorrem a elementos-padrão da usabilidade. A metodologia utilizada no estudo foi a análise de conteúdo, com base numa grelha de análise, sendo os dados examinados de forma quantitativa. A amostra foi constituída por 14 sítios de instituições de ensino superior que divulgam cursos de mestrado. Dos sítios analisados neste estudo, verificou-se que a maioria disponibiliza informação útil e essencial sobre o curso. Uma parte significativa dos sítios já possibilita candidaturas online, as quais evitam a necessidade do candidato ter se que deslocar à instituição. No que diz respeito à navegação e rapidez de localização da informação detectaram-se situações menos positivas. Nenhum dos sítios apresenta toda a informação sobre o mestrado numa só página, obrigando o utilizador a clicar em novas páginas para obter todos os dados de que necessita. Porém, e de uma forma geral, os sítios estudados recorrem à utilização de elementos-padrão da usabilidade. Considerando o objectivo deste trabalho, poderá concluir-se que os sítios das universidades e institutos superiores portugueses podem ser considerados como instrumentos de divulgação dos cursos, mas com lugar a melhorias no que diz respeito à sua navegação e, consequentemente, localização rápida e fácil da informação. This dissertation looks into the use of the World Wide Web (WWW) by higher education institutions in the promotion of their master degrees. Specifically this work attempts to analyze: 1) the information that the higher education institutions disclose on their websites regarding their master degrees; 2) to which extent the websites have a functional navigation, enabling (or not) to rapidly locate information about the master degrees; and 3) if these websites use standard usability features. The methodology used in this study was content analysis, based on an analysis chart. The findings were examined quantitatively. The sample was composed by 14 websites of higher education institutions that promote master degrees. It was possible to verify that the majority of the websites analyzed in this study disclose useful and essential information regarding the courses.
