▼ This research focusses on systems of
lighting for low-income households in
off-
grid remote rural
areas. In the dissemination of these systems a significant contribution could be made to
CO2
emission reduction, as
lighting use with kerosene is replaced by a cleaner technology. As previous
researches have focused either on small-scale lanterns or on
mini-
grid systems supplying electricity,
this research considered a more extensive spectrum of the different solutions and delivery models.
Literature reviews, interviews and case studies give valuable input in understanding the enablers
and obstructions in order to bring successfully
modern lighting solutions to remote rural areas.
Depending on local conditions different systems are considered more appropriate.
An important part of a
lighting system is the technology part. These are
solar lanterns,
solar home
lighting systems and points of
lighting using electricity supplied by a
mini-
grid. Electricity
generated through the stand alone
mini-
grid can be addressed by several means, which are
solar,
biomass, hydro power and wind. The key factors for user satisfaction and willingness to pay are the
lighting duration at sufficient illuminance and the robustness of all components.
Lighting systems in this research also contain the delivery models. The following delivery models
have been identified for small-scale solutions:
fee-for-
service, leasing and consumer financing. For
mini-grids these are: community managed systems, village cooperatives and private models. There
is not a single
lighting system that can be considered the most appropriate. However, several
important enablers and inhibitors have been identified. Important factors for successful
dissemination are the post-sales
service, intelligently designed credit solutions for the end-users and
financial solutions for the implementer. Successful implementations is obstructed when the
lighting
solutions is too expensive and no financial solution is provided. The policies that are unrolled
should be carefully prepared and the implementing agencies should be instructed.

▼ A study of an off-grid photovoltaic system for the electrification of a stand-alone single residential house in a rural area located in the city of Málaga, Spain, is presented. The load of an average family house is analysed keeping in mind the available solar energy at this location. A preliminary sizing of the system is carried out considering predefined values for the efficiency of the different technologies employed in the system: photovoltaic (PV) array, batteries as energy storages, inverters to convert the energy obtained from the sun, and diesel gensets to ensure supply under any circumstances. Later, precise brands of the available technologies in the market are selected, and the system is re-sized using the new parameters. The life cycle cost of the mini-grid (MG) system shows that the amortization of the system in 20 years for a stand-alone house is not possible. Although it is not confirmed that 20 years will be sufficient to make the system profitable, other aspects are considered and discussed in terms of their feasibility in Málaga.

▼ This investigation attempts to characterize the flow of quality assurance
information in Kenya's
off-
grid lighting market in order to identify key opportunities for
improving access to product information throughout the supply chain. While traditional
energy access strategies have focused primarily on rural electrification, distributed
generation strategies through
solar lanterns,
solar home systems, and micro-grids are
gaining more visibility and consideration as viable alternatives to their fossil-fueled
analogs. However, there is a recognized need for greater institutional support to avoid
market spoilage and encourage adoption of these nascent technologies in virgin markets.
In response to this need,
Lighting Global has created a quality assurance framework to
monitor the quality of
solar products in
off-
grid markets and communicate this
information to market stakeholders.
Distributors, wholesale traders, retailers, customers, and other stakeholders were
interviewed to better understand how buyers make purchasing decisions and how access
to quality assurance information could be improved through mechanisms like product
testing reports, on-the-box labeling, or illustrated flip-books. This research finds that
solar products are now a dominant presence in
off-
grid markets in Kenya, capturing
iii
approximately 80% of the market share by sales revenue in the towns that were surveyed.
A variety of information signals were observed in the market, including brandrecognition,
word-of-mouth referrals, and on-the-box product performance claims.
Simplified product specification sheets and illustrated flip books were identified as the
mediums preferred by retailers for learning more about
solar products and educating
customers. While many of the observed signals reduce uncertainty for end-users, quality
signals like warranties, quality seals, or consumer financing were determined to play
unique roles in reducing risk for potential
solar customers. With increased digital literacy
and mobile coverage in Kenya, mobile-friendly websites and social media applications
were highlighted as opportunities for engaging and sharing quality assurance information
with retailers and end-users further down the supply chain.

▼ For illumination, many
off-
grid communities use
lighting products such as candles, kerosene-fueled lamps, or dry cell battery-powered lights. Unfortunately, fuel-based and dry cell powered
lighting can be expensive, a health hazard and often provides poor quality light. Manufacturers are currently designing rechargeable
lighting products using LED technology as an alternative option for lower-income people.
I developed a model to analyze the initial and life cycle costs of 19
off-
grid lighting products. With the results, I make design recommendations for manufacturers. The analysis is based on product prices, laboratory measurements of product performance, and data about
lighting cost and use patterns for small,
off-
grid businesses in Kenya. The field data were collected by Arne Jacobson, Maina Mumbi, Peter Johnstone and me during 2008.
My results indicate that the economics of
off-
grid lighting using electric lamps depends on the charging mode. Products that are charged on a
fee basis using
grid electricity generally have a lower initial cost but a higher life cycle cost than
solar-charged products. For
grid-charged products, I found that increasing battery size and reducing power consumption strongly influence life cycle costs. For
solar-charged products, I found that reducing module size proportionally to a
reduction in power consumption influences life cycle costs moderately. I also found that it is best to design
grid-charged products with an optional
solar component and high-brightness LEDs are the preferred lamp type if available at a reasonable price. Potential design improvements may increase capital costs; manufacturers should consider customers??? willingness-to-pay when making design changes.

▼ The world???s non-renewable resources for energy are slowly diminishing and cannot be replaced as fast as they are being consumed (OpenStax CNX). The limited supply of fossil fuel oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear power are exponentially being depleted as the world???s population grows. At this rate, natural gas supply will run out within the next 35 years, and fossil fuel oil will be depleted within the next 14 years (Carty). These frightening facts are the driving force behind the renewable energy source movement. World demand for energy is projected to more than double by 2050 and to more than triple by the end of the century (US Department of Energy). Renewable energy sources include
solar, biomass, wind, geothermal and hydropower. The daunting task of shifting away from non-renewable energy polluters and emphasizing mainstream renewable energy sources into normal consumer and business practices is a necessary challenge society needs to start enforcing now. Determining which type of renewable energy best fits needs must be based on geographical constraints. For example, coastal areas may choose to utilize hydropower, areas with timber production could use biomass, or active volcano areas can tap into geothermal energy and of course
solar energy.
Renewable
solar energy can be implemented anywhere. All of Earth???s surface areas receive sunlight.
Solar power is energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy. The most common form of harnessing
solar energy is through photovoltaics (PV) (
Solar Energy Industries Association). PVs are the direct conversion of light into electricity at the atomic level. Specific semiconductor materials absorb photons of light and release electrons, when these free electrons are captured, an electric current is created that can be used as electricity (NASA). Combining PV materials together form
solar cells.
Solar rays from the sun combined with
solar cells result in
solar cells emitting usable electric energy.
An increase in
solar energy use would drastically reduce carbon emissions compared to the current source of energy. Humboldt State University is dedicated to helping the environment with continued sustainability measures, a
solar panel installation program might be the biggest contribution the campus could make to the renewable energy source movement.

▼ Two low-cost test methods for measuring the lumen maintenance of
off-
grid lighting products, a box-photometer and a tube-photometer, were compared to a high-accuracy integrating sphere system in order to evaluate the measurement error of the low-cost testing devices. Results from this study indicate that the box- and tube-photometers can be used to accurately measure the relative change in light output of typical
off-
grid lighting products. The tube and box are simple and inexpensive to construct, and they are quicker and easier to use than an integrating sphere system. The box-photometer and tube-photometer are recommended for use in testing
off-
grid lighting products according to the Long-Term Lumen Degradation Test specified in
Lighting Africa???s Quality Test Method and Initial Screening Method. The box???s strengths lie in its versatility and ease-of-use. The box-photometer can be used for testing product run-time and lumen maintenance, and a single measurement can be conducted in a matter of seconds by a minimally trained technician. The tube-
photometer, while nearly as easy to use as the box, excels in terms of constructability, cost, and physical size. A tube-photometer can be built of basic materials that are widely available at very low cost. No specialized tools or skills are necessary to build the device. The tube-photometer is small, light and portable, allowing for easy storage and minimal space for operation.
Results from this study indicate that a small degree of measurement error can result from improper use of the low-cost devices. Box-photometer measurements are susceptible to error caused by changes in the light source location and orientation, especially for highly directional and adjustable products. The tube-photometer is prone to small errors due to false identification of the maximum illuminance measurement. These errors, however, can be easily minimized by repetition of measurements and training test operators to use the equipment properly.

▼ Access to clean and affordable
lighting services is an important part of addressing issues of equality, development and the environment. Flame based
lighting, which is the primary source of light for over a billion people worldwide, is expensive, hazardous for users, and environmentally damaging. In the last decade,
off-
grid lighting technologies like light emitting diodes (LED) and compact fluorescent lights (CFL) have emerged as a bridge between the traditional flame-based
lighting and access to the electric
grid. This study includes an evaluation of current empirical and analytical methods for estimating the daily operating time of
solar charged
off-
grid lighting products. The study also explores low cost measures to improve the accuracy of these methods. Experimental tests conducted with a variety of
off-
grid solar charged
lighting products show that a method developed by Fraunhofer ISE for estimating the daily operating time of the products tested is imprecise. Revisions to the Fraunhofer ISE method proposed in this study and an abbreviated version of the PV GAP method (12 hour cycle) resulted in improved estimates of daily operating time. However, neither of these methods provides accurate results for all product types. Future efforts should focus on combining elements of these methods to create an accurate, low cost approach for evaluating daily operating time for
off-
grid lighting products. This study has also identified a framework to incorporate accessory charging features of
lighting products (e.g. mobile phone charging) into an estimate of daily operating time. Future efforts will be directed at validating this new framework for calculating daily operating time.

▼ Most of the world’s electricity is being generated through conventional sources of energy like coal and nuclear. People are realizing the dire effect of using these fuels, and the amount of CO2 being released into the environment. Therefore, in recent year there has been a shift in emphasis towards cleaner ways of generating electricity. One such recent trend is solar photovoltaics (PV), which has seen rapid growth over the years. This ever-increasing trend of adopting PV system allows consumers to be producers or “Prosumers”. Due to the irregular production capability of solar PV, the need for an energy storage system like a battery bank is on the rise as well. This report evaluates how solar PV can be used in combination with a battery bank to supply the annual electricity demand for a household with little to no support from the grid. The building is assumed to be located in Bangalore, India. The energy demand for the household is estimated based on the requirements of a basic Indian house standard. The size and configuration of each component have been done with regards to the total load demand. Furthermore, the cost of the whole system is estimated in order to evaluate the feasibility of the grid-tied system from an economic perspective. The results show that a PV system consisting of four 270W solar panels, a battery bank of eight150Ah lead-acid batteries and a 48V 4kW inverter is required to meet the annual energy demand of the house. The results show that from a technical standpoint, the above-mentioned technology is feasible. The results from the economic evaluation show that the localized cost of energy(LCOE) for the system is ₹6.01/kWh or € 0.078/kWh or 0.84SEK/kWh and the payback time for the given system is 16.19 years. On the bright side, there are new technological advancements in the PV field every day, which could mean that an energy system of this type can be an achievable and practical alternative. The building is assumed to be located in Bangalore, India. The energy demand for the household is estimated based on the requirements of a basic Indian house standard. The size and configuration of each component have been done with regards to…

▼ Public street
lighting has a major influence on safety, perception of safety and atmosphere perception. The municipality of Rotterdam has the obligation to provide the city with public street
lighting. Also, they have the desire to create a pleasant atmosphere in the city during both day and night. A user study performed for this project has helped determine what a pleasant atmosphere means; clean streets (no litter), knowing your neighbors, enough urban nature and seeing in the dark. This thesis focuses on the last two points, because they seemed to be conflicting each other. A hypothesis was formulated, suggesting that urban nature and street
lighting conflict each other above and underground. Above ground, trees reduce the light output of the street
lighting when they grow close to a
lighting point. Below ground, the roots of the trees get strangled between the power cables.
This conflict seemed to be enhanced by the fact that space is limited in the urban environment, especially in residential areas. A certain distance is needed between lampposts and trees, because of street lay-outs (side streets, parking spots, cables under ground) the options for are limited for placing a satisfying amount of trees in between the
lighting points. However, the living quality of residential areas benefits from more urban nature.
The hypothesis was researched with observation and nine interviews. It was revealed that trees blocking light is solved easily by placing trees and
lighting point correct. Correctly distancing trees and
lighting points, both in height and horizontal spacing.
Trees can be allowed to block the light a little bit, because it creates a dynamic shadow on the road. For high speed roads (from 50 km/h) these shadows would become a problem for safety reasons. However, in residential streets it is not.
The underground conflict between tree roots and power cables can be solved in two different ways: find other ways to create residential green or redesign public street
lighting. Within the first direction many solutions were found, however within the second direction there were not. Since 1800 the lamppost has looked the same: a light source on a pole. Other forms such as hanging street
lighting and facade
lighting solve some problems above ground (space consumption) but not underground. And these forms of public street
lighting bring new problems with them (convincing building owners to allow this way of mounting).
With this analysis the assignment for this thesis was formulated:
"Solve the conflict between urban nature and public street
lighting by designing a new street
lighting system."
Rotterdam has the goal to reduce
CO2 emission with 50% in 2020 (compared to 1990). To help reach this goal the
CO2 emission of the solution should be lower then the
CO2 emission of the current public street
lighting. In order to do this the environmental aspects of public street
lighting were researched for every step in the life cycle. This was done together with the (financial) value for every life cycle step.…

▼ Metal based thermoelectric materials have high power
factors and very low cost. However their high thermal conductivity
gives them a low efficiency. Metal thermoelectrics were heavily
investigated in the early 1900’s, but fell out of favor for new
higher efficiency semiconducting thermoelectric materials. They
have since only seen use in thermocouples due to their wide
temperature range. By lowering their fill rate and making the
elements longer, however, the effects of their thermal conductivity
can be minimized to achieve a high power output. In this thesis,
metal thermoelectrics are investigated as a cost effective solution
to low-grade waste heat recovery applications. Scale model
thermoelectric modules were developed using wire-type metal
thermoelectric elements to demonstrate the power output performance
with cost analysis in the applications of a wood-burning fireplace
and a concentrated
solar thermoelectric system. Careful design
optimization based on thermal matching was also performed prior to
the module fabrication using an online simulation tool and a finite
element simulation software. A peak power output of 14.38 W per ½
square meter was achieved, which corresponds to a power cost as low
as 3.4 $/W, a value comparable to that of the state-of-the-art
photovoltaic. This demonstrates that metal thermoelectrics can be a
viable technology of generating
off grid power using small fires. A
similar device design was tested in
solar heat concentration but
yielded a much higher power cost of 76.6 $/W. Further improvement
of performance may be possible with an improved system-level design
for enhanced heat transfer.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Small-scale energy consumers (500 kWe – 5 MWe), that are situated in off-grid areas are often left reliant on fossil fuels (like diesel generators) to meet their energy needs. The International Energy Association (IEA) however attempts to decarbonise the entire energy system and has set certain goals for the renewable energy sector. Most renewable energy sources offer only intermitted power solutions for small-scale off-grid applications and storing electrical energy for this scale becomes expensive. Concentrated solar power (CSP) can offer a non-intermitted solution by having the added benefit of thermal energy storage (TES). However, the critical barrier to the widespread usage of small-scale CSP is the lack of optimised and economically competitive technology. Steam Rankine cycles are typically integrated with CSP in large-scale applications but the thermodynamic properties of steam however prohibit water being used as suitable working fluid in lower temperature and lower power output applications. The aim of this thesis is therefore to determine whether the integration of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), with a smaller CSP system can result in a feasible energy solution for off-grid applications.
The first step taken was to determine the technical feasibility of solar integrated organic Rankine cycle (SORC) technology. It was proven feasible by the operation of existing small-scale SORC plants. ORC’s and CSP as separate types of technology are being used in various industries. The integration of CSP with an ORC is however considered an immature technology.
A small-scale application in the higher DNI region of South Africa was identified to use as case study. Black Mountain mine near the town Aggeneys was selected by using a multi criteria decision analysis tool. Even though Black Mountain mine is grid-connected, it is still a viable case study to analyse whether an SORC can be a feasible solution for a mine. In proving so, the proposition then exists to use a SORC for future mining developments in off-grid areas.
A SORC was theoretically analysed by looking at the solar field, TES and power block separately. The theory developed was then combined to create a model for a SORC. The simulation was conducted on MatLab and the design point was resultantly determined at a plant efficiency of 12.8 % and a turbine inlet pressure and evaporating temperature of 2858.8 kPa and 186 °C respectively. The simulation was then expanded to run over a period of one year and a maximum capacity factor of 83 % was recorded. The lowest achievable levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) was 16.7 $c/kWh at a solar multiple (SM) of 1.7 and TES size of 6 hours. The conclusion was reached that SORC’s are economically competitive with diesel generators but cannot solely meet the required energy demand and must therefore utilise auxiliary energy sources.

▼ This Bachelor’s degree thesis has been performed on behalf of Upplands Lokaltrafik. The thesis aims to suggest a design of a stand-alone renewable power supply system for the bus stops in Uppland. Because of reorganization of Upplands Lokaltrafik and a change in the electricity act they now have to make the decision of either having the future bus stops connected to the electricity grid, with the requirement of installing an electricity meter at each bus stop, or to implement an off grid solution. Upplands Lokaltrafik has a goal of doubling the number of passengers until 2020 and as a part of reaching this goal the bus stops will be designed with electrical features. This thesis also aims to investigate the electricity demand for these future bus stops. The result of the study shows that a connection to the electricity grid and installation of an electricity meter means an investment cost of approximately 83 500 SEK or 123 500 SEK depending on how far cables have to be drawn. The solution with a photovoltaic system with a 180 Wp solar panel would result in an installation cost of 18 500 SEK, which would be both cheaper and more sustainable for the future. However, a photovoltaic system means higher maintenance and a higher risk of destruction. Depending on choice of batteries and the slope of solar panels, both maintenance and risk of vandalization could be diminished.

▼ In the villages along the Amazon river, the access to clean drinking water is lacking. In Progreso, the Swedish foundation Ankarstiftelsen and the non-governmental organization Entropika have installed a water purification system to solve this problem. The water used in the purification system is today pumped from a tributary to the Amazon river with a gasoline pump. This comes with social, ecologic and economic problems. To solve these problems, a solar water pumping system has been developed. After a preparing literature study on the topic, a field study was done to find relevant data. From this, an Excel program was made to optimize a suitable solution. Together with suggestions from three companies, two with a surface pump and one with a submersible pump, the system including a submersible pump was considered the most preferable. This mainly due to lower cost, weight and maintenance. Further, the suggestions were used to control the accuracy of the developed Excel program. This program can be used for future optimizations of systems with similar character.

▼ For the 1.6 billion people in the world who lack access to electricity, the flashlight serves as a simple but important
lighting device. In contrast to traditional incandescent flashlights, incorporating light emitting diode (LED) technology into flashlights presents a potentially less polluting, more efficient and cost-effective alternative
lighting source. To avoid market spoiling as LED technology is introduced into
off-
grid lighting markets it is essential that quality be assured. This study addresses the quality of flashlights available to low-income flashlight users in Kenya. Lab-based performance testing of three commonly used models shows that flashlights perform substantially below rated specifications. Models tested had battery capacities that were 50% below rated levels and required up to 25% more time to charge the battery than advertised. Frequent users of flashlights expressed high levels of dissatisfaction with available flashlights; 87% reported having problems with their flashlight in the last six months. Failed LEDs (23%), water leakage (21%), and batteries no longer keeping their charge (16%) were among the most common problems. The median reported lifespan of a flashlight was two months. Users interviewed indicated that the cost of flashlight ownership absorbed up to 7.4% of their annual income. In addition, the potential health and environmental risks associated with flashlight use are substantial. Estimates indicate that more than 700,000 kg of lead are discarded and over 30,000 m3 of waste are produced annually from the use of low quality flashlights in Kenya. Scenarios illustrating the impact of marketing an affordable, improved quality flashlight indicate a potential 80%
reduction of waste and lead disposal and up to a 65% cost-savings for flashlight users. Results obtained from this study are useful for creating a framework for quality assurance of low-cost flashlights products, helping to reduce the social, economic, health and environmental implications of low-cost flashlights in Kenya and elsewhere around the world.

In this thesis you can read about an alternative for the interior architecture of a Tiny house on wheels. It also explores tiny living as a possibility for some of us and looks at what a small accommodation can make for our environment, our economy and our behaviours. In my project, I have created the interior architecture of a tiny house for two people on wheels. The house is 14m2+ 4m2in the loft and it is designed for year-round-living. A tiny house is a home with a small environmental footprint that doesn’t take up more space than it really needs. In such a small home residents must evaluate and prioritize what is truly important to them. Nothing else will fit. Next time you move, move your entire home.

▼ Solar Irrigation Pumps (SIPs) are used to pump (ground and surface) water to irrigate farm lands. In a country with a historical mismatch of energy supply and demand, and almost 120 million families dependent on earnings from agriculture (Prachi Salve, 2014), SIPs offer great prospects. Unlike electric and diesel pumps – dominating the market till today – SIPs have almost zero marginal costs. This leads to extra crop production at negligible costs and also generation of electricity when not being used for pumping. Due to almost zero emissions, it simultaneously addresses the issue of climate change hence bringing prosperity to the population at all levels.SIPs are a new phenomenon in India and due to the comparatively1 high capital costs, SIPs require subsidies to make them affordable for a farmer. Support in the form of subsidies has been given to around 15,000 farms in the whole country. By introducing solar pumps on a subsidy scheme in 2009-2010, Rajasthan has become the pioneer state of India. Since then numerous solar pumps have been deployed and farmers have gained experience with their usage. These farmers appear to be happy with the functioning of the pumps; 95% of the farmers, who gained enough knowledge to answer the question, say that the pump works better than their diesel or electric pump. A surprising finding is that the project cost per pump is getting higher while the pumps are getting cheaper. This means that the government is using more money to run the project. To find the reasons for the rising project costs and to find a way to decrease them, further research is needed. If the project cost could be decreased more pumps could be supplied with the same amount of subsidy. It was also found that the SIPs were not successful in replacing the electric and diesel pumps. The diesel and electric pumps had more horse power (hp) so were able to pump more water resulting in irrigation of more land in the same amount of time. Farmers expressed they could fully switch to SIPs when more powerful pumps were supplied.Because the present SIPs are off grid systems, it is not possible to sell the excess electricity that is not needed for pumping water. Because there are no marginal costs, there is no incentive for switching off the machines either. The consequence is excessive pumping of water leading to groundwater depletion. An important improvement would be to connect these pumps to the electricity grid. The possibility to earn some money with delivering energy would probably be a good reason to stop needless pumping. The subsidy program that was in place in Rajasthan had an 86% capital subsidy (the farmer had to pay only 14% of the price of SIP). With the available money only 10,000 pumps per year could be supplied (Dr. Dinesh Kumar Goyal, 2013). When the subsidy per pump is decreased more pumps could be deployed and it was shown that even with a lower subsidy getting a SIP will still be attractive. One of the points of improvement for a quick roll out of SIPs might be found in the way these pumps are financed.…

▼ The purpose of this research is to encourage policy makers to craft policies that support environmentally sound design practices while integrating bulk energy storage into the electricity
grid. Bulk energy storage technology can regulate electricity coming into the
grid from different energy sources.
Grid flexibility is a powerful tool to empower the clean energy movement because it enables the integration of renewable energy into the electrical
grid. However, storage technology has the potential to become another one of the many “tragedy of commons”, considering that there are no regulations forcing storage companies to pursue environmental-friendly operation. Bulk energy storage devices which earn income through arbitrage, have the potential to increase
grid emissions. Both energy losses and the variety of energy
grid resources, largely damper the environmental advantages of bulk energy storage devices. By using a linear programming formulation that considers both revenue and emissions, this thesis proposes operational solutions where bulk energy storage technologies can retain a high revenue while simultaneously reducing their emissions from the current eGRID sub-regions. These results can be achieved by explicitly demanding small inexpensive changes in the operation of the system. Usually, only a few companies will follow sustainable practices by themselves. Therefore, a variety of policy implementations are suggested to support environmentally sound design principals for bulk energy storage technology.

▼ COv2 injection in oil reservoirs has been widely accepted as an effective technique for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), which has been applied by the oil industry for over 40 years. Concerns over greenhouse gas emissions are leading to the investigation and realization of its potential as a carbon storage method in recent years. To achieve better miscibility and sweep efficiency for COv2 flooding, production performance needs to be optimized. However, optimization of production performance remains a challenging task in the upstream oil and gas industry due to the physical and/or financial uncertainties.
In this study, a commercial reservoir simulator has been used to analyze optimum development strategies for COv2 miscible flooding. Since
grid-refinement sensitivity is an extremely troublesome problem in many compositionally enhanced solvent simulations, the effect of local
grid refinement on conducting COv2 flooding simulation will be first discussed in this study. Coarse reservoir models without local
grid refinement are found to contribute to significant error. The nature of the errors resulting from numerical dispersion and the non-linearity of flash calculations depends on many variables, including petrophysics and fluid types; not using local
grid refinement may result in overly optimistic or pessimistic production performances.
The impacts of injection/production variables on oil recovery and COv2 storage are investigated. Injection variables studied include: injection pore volume, injection initiation timing and produced gas recycling while the production variables include producer bottomhole pressure, target oil rate and gas rate limits. Results show that optimum injection/ production strategies differ significantly for both light and heavy oil reservoirs. Overall, this study has determined a systematic general injection and production workflow to recover more oil and store more COv2 underground simultaneously.

▼ Thomas Edison created the light bulb over two hundred and thirty years ago. Still today there are over a billion people that do not have access to reliable electricity. This paper looks at what can be done to help these people disconnected from the utility
grid. Creating the infrastructure to connect remote locations and villages to the electric
grid is expensive and unrealistic. How can organizations work together to make this possible? Renewable resources, such as
solar power, are a much more efficient manner to help provide electricity. This will not be easy, as there are many barriers standing in the way of electrifying people living in
off-
grid locations. The task is too big for a single person or organization. Various organizations need to engage and work together towards sustainable change in the system. Different organizations have different strengths and connections, and by aligning themselves they can make change and bring about sustainability. New organizational forms are developing form to fill in niche needs that are overlooked by established organizations to benefit society.

▼ In this study, it was investigated how individual households could manage security of supply during an outage by installing a local energy system that could operate independently from the electricity grid. By installing local renewable off-grid energy systems, households could guarantee an uninterrupted supply of energy even during an outage on the electricity grid, while also increasing their energy autonomy during normal circumstances. The results showed that managing an outage during summer was fairly easy. Due to high electricity production, a small energy storage was enough to manage an outage during summer. However, managing an outage during winter was more critical. During winter, the systems needed to be almost fully reliant on the energy storage. This significantly increased the cost of these systems. Due to the high cost for the energy systems today, it was not considered a feasible solution to improve energy security at a national level. However, at a local level, this was considered to have the potential to improve energy security. First, it could to be of interest for people who already have installed solar panels, who could add a battery and thereby be able to manage an outage during summer. Second, it could be of interest for people who are more exposed to outages or have a low trust in the system to work properly. Lastly, this could be of interest for actors for whom backup energy is important, for instance for the industry.

▼ The market for off-grid solar solutions in Kenya has developed rapidly the recent years. The growth has required capital and access to finance, which has been mainly provided by foreign investors. This thesis examines the perceived risks on the market for off-grid solar solutions in Kenya through a series of interviews with actors engaged in the market. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the access to capital and highlight the perceived risks that might constrain a continued positive development of the market in Kenya. The findings of this thesis categorize the perceived risks on the market as political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental (see full report table 2 in section 8 for sub categories). The companies engaged in the market for off-grid solar solutions should be differentiated based on their business model. This since their different value chains entails specific in risks. This study uses two modified value chains to highlight the differences in retail and distribution between the two defined market segments: product and utility. The product segment includes small-scale solar products often referred to as PICO-products and Solar-Home-Systems (SHS), which by being sold on installment now provides basic electricity to a growing number of people in Kenya. The utility segment includes minigrids with solar energy as power supply. This segment is subject to specific regulations regarding installations and operations, which is one of the main contributing factors to the difference in risks compared to the product segment. The other main factor is the way the respective segment distributes and retails their products/electricity. The distribution for the product segment is done by regular land transportation and customer interaction through sales agents, providing basic access to electricity. While the minigrids uses a local distribution grid to provide access to electricity. This leads to specific risks within the categorizes social, technological and legal risk. This study shows that the lack of understanding of the different market segments and their context specific risks, pose a risk to the market reputation and the local actors access to finance. The absence of knowledge about the difference in risks causes generalizations to be done, both from financiers who might place their funding elsewhere, and the customers who might choose other solutions than solar to fulfill their energy needs. The uncertainty of the future development and the position of the national regulations on the market together with the two segments creates barriers for future access to finance. Access that is required to build and boost the market even further.

▼ Three-dimensional air quality models are vital tools for air quality research. The models are under continuous development as the knowledge and understanding of atmospheric processes improve. Once a model has been evaluated retrospectively against available observations, sensitivity studies can be conducted to determine possible causes for discrepancies between the model and observations and to assess potential impact of future
emission changes. This research will evaluate the performance of two air quality models, the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model and the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions (CAMx), at a fine scale over the southeastern United States in January and July 2002. The air quality in the southeast is of particular interest because of the high NH3 emissions from agriculture which play a key role in the nutrient and nitrogen cycle, act to neutralize acids in the air, and participate in the formation of PM2.5.
The baseline simulations are completed at a horizontal
grid spacing of 4-km using both CMAQ and CAMx. The evaluation of meteorological variables, chemical concentrations, wet and dry deposition, column mass, and visibility is completed using available observations from surface measurements and satellite data. The evaluation protocol involves analysis through domain-wide statistics, spatial distribution, and temporal variations. Additionally, two sensitivity studies are conducted. In order to assess the model sensitivity to horizontal
grid spacing, a sensitivity study evaluates the performance of CMAQ at 12-, 4-, and 1.33-km horizontal
grid spacings. The second sensitivity study evaluates the sensitivity of CMAQ to
emission reductions of SO2, NOx, and agricultural-livestock NH3.
In the baseline simulation, O3 and PM2.5 are overpredicted by both models in January and underpredicted by both models in July, with CAMx predicting higher values than CMAQ in both months. The overprediction by the models in January is likely influenced by simulated weaker vertical mixing than what occurred in the true atmosphere. In July, underestimated emissions of precursor species or overpredicted wet deposition may be contributing to the underpredicted O3 and PM2.5. The spatial distribution of the adjusted gas ratio indicates that the regions of high NH3 emissions in the eastern NC and northeastern GA are NH3-rich and reductions of NH3 alone would do little to reduce PM2.5 pollution, which will be further evaluated in the second sensitivity study. When compared to satellite data, CMAQ shows good agreement for CO and NO2 in both months, with larger biases for O3 and AOD. These discrepancies may be due to uncertainties in the boundary conditions of the model and the calculation of AOD from the model predictions, as well as assumptions made in the satellite retrieval algorithms.
CMAQ shows some improvement for O3 and PM2.5 using finer
grid spacings in January, but no improvement in July. One cause for this seasonal variation is the increased mass removed through wet deposition at…

▼ Modern energy poverty in sub-Saharan Africa is one of the primary challenges that humanity faces today. Rural electrification in this region is a complex issue that needs to be well understood by developed and developing countries in order to thrive on this situation. Further, due to the significant amount of installed capacity that this market will represent in the coming decades, the impact of this market in climate change could be irreversible. There is, therefore, a need of well addressing this market in order to mitigate and minimize its impact in climate change. This work first presents and studies the rural electrification market in sub- Saharan Africa and second, focuses in Mini-grids, one of the most successful alternatives to grid extension in the last decade. By analyzing the different aspects that a Mini-grid involves and reviewing several case studies worldwide, this thesis tries to identify what are the challenges and opportunities that Mini-grids face to become successful in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in East Africa where the author has carried a 6-month internship hosted by the company African Solar Designs Ltd (Nairobi, Kenya). Innovative Business models, Policy and Inclusive Business are identified as key aspects of Mini-grids as failures in the experiences in sub-Saharan Africa. The A-B-C Telecom Mini-grid approach (A: Anchor, B: Business; C: Community) is presented here as a commercially viable solution for Mini-grids in rural areas of East Africa, where there is a need of access to modern energy as well as many off-grid Base Telecom Stations that need more affordable electricity. The A-B-C Telecom Mini-grid model is first defined, secondly the technology is simulated and optimized using Homer software; a PV-diesel hybrid Mini-grid is selected the best option for this market. Then the business model for the A-B-C concept is defined and is financially simulated under certain parameters shown. A financial sensitivity analysis is also implemented to understand how viable is the model presented and how sensible to certain financial parameters is. To finish with, this project identifies the model limitations and the major barriers that this model face to succeed; favorable regulatory environment, finance to scale up the concept and donor agencies and rural energy practitioners to understand and switch their approach of rural electrification projects into a more sustainable and commercially viable one.

▼ The brand Weltevree positions itself in the market with a line of basic products people can enjoy and interact with. The products in the collection all fit a similar vision. ‘Weltevree is about enjoying the basic things in an honest way, delivering a quality experience for both you and your companions. The products are meant to be used and invite you to an adventure.’ This thesis focuses on the design of an adventurous
lighting product for Weltevree.
Within the
modern world,
lighting is, contrary to most electronic devices, still associated with being fixed to a single place. Combined with the current trends, this creates a need for
lighting that guides you on your personal and social adventures. Instead of facilitating the adventure, like the current products in the Weltevree collection, the aim is to guide and support adventure.
The designed product consists of a rotatable sphere on top of a translucent body and a solid handle that functions as rotational axis of the sphere. Within the sphere the combination of a collimator and a LED provide a bundled light beam, similar to a flashlight. By facing the ball forward the product functions as task light, facing the ball downward creates an ambient light caused by the refraction in the body. The three primitive shapes provide recognizable usecues that indicate the desired interaction. The product has a clever mechanical construction, an adventurous mentality and a friendly character, which makes it utterly suitable for the Weltevree collection. It is named Guidelight, which describes the character of the product.

▼ e-Science is a terminology denoting
modern scientific experiments and studies being carried out with the support of large-scale
Grid infrastructures. The essence of a
Grid is to enable resource sharing, including compute resources and storage resources, to as many authorised people as possible. This thesis has made several contributions towards building a national
grid infrastructure, by designing and implementing new approaches to simplify the use of the
Grid so as to enlarge the user base of
grid infrastructure and e-Science. These new systems have been deployed as part of the Australian national
grid infrastructure, however the approaches used aim to provide a generic solution so that other
grid operators and users can also benefit from it. Our exploration of existing data
grid systems has shown that these are not easy for researchers to use, since they require users to have certain IT knowledge, and rarely have a user-friendly interface. My approach is to develop a web portal based upon a widely-used data
grid system, iRODS, that is able to make use of geographically distributed storage resources. This new interface not only supports the WebDAV standard, enabling easy drag-and-drop file access, but also provides a web interface, allowing users to share and manage data with a web browser. Data transfer is a challenge when dealing with large volumes of data and long distances, which leads to problems with stability, reliability and performance. Existing data repositories and data transfer services deliver necessary functionality, but only support a limited number of protocols, which can cause problems with interoperability. Rather than developing a new data transfer
service or modifying current services to support new protocols, my approach focuses on equipping an arbitrary data source with astandard GridFTP interface, so that it can interact with most of the existing data transfer services and
grid services. This thesis gave a detailed description of my architecture and evaluation, and demonstrated that this approach adds virtually no overhead to the data source but gives it more flexibility in data transfer. Compute job submission usually requires users to have a significant level of understanding of the
Grid, such as its structure and the usage of its client tools, especially when users are exposed to a complex
grid infrastructure with multiple resources. The client tools and interfaces are not easy to use or to develop custom applications. My approach addresses this problem by providing a web portal with a RESTful interface to simplify job submission to multiple
grid resources. The RESTful interface also makes it possible for users and application developers to submit massive jobs in a simple way. The portal has a template system to enable quick and easy development of customiszd interfaces to applications running on
grid compute resources. The portal therefore provides a generic solution to users across various research domains.

▼ Nearly one fifth of the global population lacks access to electricity and electricity access is essential for economic growth and human well-being. SHSs and micro-grids both have the possibility of increasing the electricity access in developing countries. The decision to choose either SHSs or micro-grids for rural electrification is a complex task that must consider both the technological factors that separate these two systems and the non-technological factors. Separate times of peak load between households (inter-class diversity) has shown to be one major advantage for the use of micro-grids. Studies have shown that the diversity factor present in micro-grids can scale down the necessary capacity of PV modules and energy storage of up to 80%, in comparison to stand-alone systems (e.g. SHSs). These reductions are nevertheless based on assumed diversity factors, not using real load profiles and the necessary capacities are calculated using intuitive methods (known to be inexact). From interviews in a rural community of Nicaragua, the author generated load profiles and determined the diversity factor of the community. The load profiles were generated with a specially designed software to formulate realistic load profiles for off-grid consumers in rural areas. These load profiles were later used in the software HOMER where the diversity’s influence on required capacity and NPC were determined by comparing SHSs to a PV based micro-grid. The study showed that the required capacity and NPC of the inverter and charge controller are clearly decreased as an influence of inter-class diversity. The required PV and battery capacity are also decreased when a micro-grid is utilized, but these reductions are most likely a result from the limited nominal power per component considered in HOMER.
