▼ Social Media (SM) applications allow users to communicate with various types of information about goods and services in the form of electronic word of mouth (eWOM). Applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Google and YouTube are currently ranked as the most accessed and adopted websites in the world that provide eWOM communication. Most importantly, these SM applications may have a significant impact on the opinions and attitudes of users with regard to the product information being shared. The aim of this research is to examine how different combinations of interactive attributes and features of eWOM being shared over SM applications effect consumers' attitudes and behaviours of intangible services in the healthcare industry. Relevant attributes derived from the literature, which include source credibility, trustworthiness and argument quality within SM eWOM messages are explored. These are examined in line with factors of Electronic Window Dressing (EWD) features, such as SM capabilities of simultaneous video, picture and web link sharing within the SM environment. This determines what types of different characteristics of eWOM alone or in combination with multimedia communications, can positively or negatively influence consumer's attitude that can have an effect on actual behaviour. A conceptual framework is augmented and developed based on existing theories in relation to persuasion and attitude change. The Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) models are combined and adapted as a foundation of a new conceptual approach, noted as 'Social Media Communications Model' (SMCM), with additional components specifically related to SM communications in an attempt to form a predictive explanation of consumers' attitudes. The research is designed as a comparative study by adopting an inductive interpretivist approach. A Qualitative method is used in the data collection process by performing in-depth interviews with 34 senior level managers with regard to SM communications in healthcare industry from both the United Kingdom and the United States. All of the primary data was transcribed, coded and thematically analysed. The key findings revealed the most preferred SM platforms used in the UK and US, how source credibly, expertise and trustworthiness are effective, and why videos, pictures and the timing of post were significant in changing consumer attitude. Practically, the research provides businesses and organisation in similar service goods industries with a SM model that explains how to create successful marketing campaigns. The research likewise contributes theoretically by identifying the relationships of important constructs relevant to SM communications from a qualitative perspective, forming a new extended theoretical framework that can be a predicator of consumer behaviour. The research further provides a better understanding towards the key factors of eWOM in SM that influence consumers to think and behave in certain ways, additionally contributing to the existing SM marketing…

▼ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting has become common practice for large organisations globally, yet there is variance in the CSR related activities claimed in disclosures. CSR researchers argue that cultural and historical backgrounds are the influential drivers of CSR behaviour. However, the links between actual activities claimed in CSR reports and the cultural systems that underpin these reported activities is an under-explored area. This thesis discusses the uniqueness of Japanese socio-cultural aspects. While Japan is well-known for having the most advanced energy efficient technologies in the world, it is also known for being below international standards for gender equality in the workplace. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore and examine organisational behaviours through the lens of relativism in order to understand what organisations are reporting and how and why managers prioritise these activities. This thesis is based on longitudinal qualitative research focusing on the Japanese transport companies that published CSR reports between 2005 and 2009. The findings from manually coded content analysis revealed: (1) that activities related to providing public safety, waste management and the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), and environmental innovation were the top three most frequently reported CSR activities; and (2) complying with laws, career planning, flexible work practices, and providing public safety were the three categories that showed the most significant increase in reporting frequency from 2005-2009. This thesis extends the previous literature. Takagaki (2010b) identified that the transport industry, particularly the air and water sub-sectors, is the industry where the environmental problems are serious and require urgent attention. Takagaki (2010b) chose to explore the electronics industry as this industry is considered to be middle ground for its level of seriousness and urgency. This research: (1) examines the transport industry; (2) investigates the links between the actual activities reported, and the activities reported to be influential drivers of these activities.

▼ Experiences of presence are common in bereavement. The bereaved person may see the deceased, hear their familiar voice, or otherwise feel they are close at hand. But although common, they are experiences not without controversy. They have come under a variety of descriptions, from 'hallucinations', lacking in meaning and even essentially meaningless, to 'continuing relationships', of rich personal significance. The current thesis represents the first systematic investigation of the properties and meaning of experiences of presence. Narrative biographic interviews with bereaved informants were analysed using Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis. Analytical focus was on the ways in which participants made such experiences meaningful. As a novel approach, this thesis reports several new findings about these phenomena. Firstly, the experiences happened in a variety of bonds (including spouses, parents, grandparents, children, siblings and others), and in a variety of circumstances of the bereavement (including sudden and expected deaths). In all cases, they were described as richly meaningful experiences and as relying on several sources for this meaning. The personal histories of participants were of particular importance in making sense of experiences of presence. Within this context, the experience acquired sense as a continuation of some aspect of the relationship with the deceased. The experiences also had diverse functions, from soothing to destructive. Sometimes, the experiences helped the bereaved to resolve unfinished business with the deceased; at other times, the help was with a much more ordinary problem. On some occasions the experiences of presence caused the bereaved more problems; they simply pronounced the grief or continued a fraught relationship. Participants showed that they had many cultural resources available to them in making sense of their experiences but they did not use all of them. Many informants used some spiritual and psychological ideas to make sense of their experiences. The thesis concludes that many of the most popular theories for these experiences impoverish them by stripping them of their diversity and important aspects of their meaning. The thesis also makes recommendations for psychotherapy for those who have problems of living as a result of their experiences of presence. The study also has implications for psychological research as none of these findings could have been observed through the use of an experimental methodology.

▼ Ulwaluko is a Xhosa word that refers to male circumcision, an initiation ritual performed to transform boys into men. The ritual is supposed to instill good moral and social values. Research has demonstrated that, the practice of Ulwaluko has undergone many changes primarily because of urbanization, acculturation and the emergence of back-door circumcision schools amongst other things. This has culminated in instances of moral decline such as criminal activity, drug abuse, risky sexual behaviour and inhumane behaviour among some of the initiates. There has been a recent upsurge in research on Ulwaluko in South Africa. However, lacking in this body of scholarship is a focus on how Ulwaluko constructs masculinities. This served as the motivation for my study. Given the above, my study explored the role of Ulwaluko in the construction of masculinity in men at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Hegemonic masculinity (Connell, 1994; Connell & Messerschmidt, 2005) was used as a theoretical framework conceptualizing this study. The study utilised a qualitative framework and data was collected using in-depth semi-structured interviews. Seven participants aged from 19 to 32, consented to be part of the study. These were recruited using purposive sampling. The ethical considerations of the study adhered to the guidelines stipulated by UWC. Data was transcribed, and analysed using thematic decomposition analysis. The findings of this study indicate that Ulwaluko constructs masculinity in hegemonic ways. Through hegemony it establishes, maintains and retains control over young men, boys and women. It constructs an idealised masculine identity that is morally upright, faced with ritual challenges and burdened by a prescriptive set of masculine role expectations. This study also shows the self-reflexive, critical and imaginative engagement by men as they negotiated Ulwaluko‟s ideal masculinity. Such contestations resulted in the creation of rival masculinities. It also demonstrates how subject position(s) impact understandings and constructions of masculinities. This study provided a richer and more nuanced contextual understanding of the psychosocial realities of men who underwent Ulwaluko Advisors/Committee Members: Andipatin, Michelle (advisor).

Inledning: Ett känslomässigt möte kan möjliggöra en terapeutisk förändring. Dock kan själva mötesögonblicket väcka starka känslor hos psykoterapeuten och ställa stora krav på förmågan att hantera det som väcks. Trots att det är en välkänd klinisk erfarenhet så finns det begränsad forskning om psykoterapeuters erfarenheter av egna känslor i det psykoterapeutiska arbetet och hur detta hanteras. Syfte: Att få fördjupad kunskap om och förståelse för hur psykodynamiskt verksamma psykoterapeuter upplever och hanterar egna känslor i det psykoterapeutiska arbetet. Metod: Sju psykodynamiskt verksamma psykoterapeuter intervjuades. Materialet analyserades tematiskt. Resultat: Informanterna beskrev hur de hade utvecklats i yrket, vilket hade stärkt förmågan att klara av starka känslor. Känsloladdade stunder kunde innebära en brytpunkt i terapin. Informanterna var övervägande positiva till att dela känslor med patienter, men upplevelsen av hur detta gjordes varierade. Det kunde vara svårt att tala om negativa aspekter/känslor i terapin. Egenterapi och handledning upplevdes som viktigt och kunde vara ett stöd i att förstå och hantera starka känslor i terapi. Diskussion: Resultatet diskuteras bland annat i förhållande till psykoterapeuters professionella utveckling, förmågan att hantera känslostarka mötesögonblick, intersubjektivitet samt viktiga egenskaper hos en terapeut. Vidare diskuterades bland annat upplevelser av att dela känslor med patienten, för- och nackdelar med självavslöjande och vikten av att kunna prata om negativa aspekter/känslor.

Introduction: An emotional meeting can enable a therapeutic change. The moment of meeting can awake strong emotions within the psychotherapist and challenge the ability to handle this. There is limited research about psychotherapists´ experiences of own emotions in the psychotherapeutic work. Aim: To achieve in-depth knowledge of how psychodynamically active psychotherapists experience and manage own emotions in the psychotherapeutic work. Method: Seven psychodynamic psychotherapists were interviewed. The material was thematically analyzed. Results: Through professional experience, the informants described a professional development, which was helpful in coping with strong emotions. There was a predominantly positive attitude to sharing emotions with patients, but the experience of how this was done varied. Negative emotions towards patients were considered difficult to talk about. Both as a patient and as a therapist in counselling, the informants had gained experiences that helped them in managing strong emotions. Discussion: The result was discussed in relation to psychotherapists professional development, intersubjectivity, important characteristics for a therapist and the ability to manage emotional moments. ▼ Young workers have been shown to have a significant presence in non-standard employment around the world (Hipp, Bernhardt, & Allmendinger, 2015; Peiró, Sora, & Caballer, 2012; Smith, 2018), and a considerable number of studies have offered explanations for why young workers enter non-standard employment (Baranowska & Gebel, 2010; de Lange, Gesthuizen, & Wolbers, 2014b; Imdorf, Helbling, & Inui, 2017). However, young workers’ experiences within non-standard employment are comparatively under-researched. The literature has highlighted that young workers, as with other workers in non-standard employment, experience a lack of control over their working time, impacting on their work-life balance (Moore, Tailby, Antunes, & Newsome, 2018; Woodman, 2012, 2013). Research has also suggested that young workers in non-standard employment experience age-based discrimination (Blackham, 2019; Mooney, 2016), and normalise non-standard employment (Moore et al., 2018; Mrozowicki, 2016). The lack of attention given to young workers’ experiences in non-standard employment is typified in New Zealand literature, where research has been limited to student populations, focusing on the interactions of work and study (Beban & Trueman, 2018; Richardson, Kemp, Malinen, & Haultain, 2013). The purpose of this research is therefore to explore young workers’ experiences of non-standard employment in New Zealand. The study was designed using interpretive descriptive methodology (Thorne, Kirkham, & O’Flynn-Magee, 2004). Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 12 young people aged 20 to 24, with interview questions designed to explore their past and current experiences of non-standard employment. Participant metaphors were also elicited during interviews, to gain deeper insights into participants’ perceptions about their overall experiences of non-standard employment. The main findings of this study were that young workers in non-standard employment in New Zealand experience: 1) sub-standard relationships with their managers and employers; 2) lack of autonomy and control over their employment and working time; and 3) negative personal life impacts due to poor work conditions. The findings extend knowledge of several aspects of workers’ relationships in non-standard employment, including trust, treatment, and social status. Additionally, the research is consistent with findings in the literature that workers in non-standard employment, and specifically young workers, experience a loss of control over their working time (Beban & Trueman, 2018; McGann, White, & Moss, 2016; Moore et al., 2018; Woodman, 2012, 2013). The research also contributes to the understanding of how young New Zealand workers view non-standard employment, finding that they may normalise being in non-standard employment (Moore et al., 2018; Mrozowicki, 2016), but do not normalise non-standard working times, or lack of control over their working times. Due to the prevailing pandemic in connection with Covid-19, irrational decisions occur, and people start panicking. As a result, there is a very high demand from grocery stores due to customers hoarding ICA:s goods, which results in an even greater panic in people who do not perceive the problems that arise at the stores. For the stores, this means that the flow of goods from suppliers to the stores has been subjected to incredible pressure. The purpose of this study is divided into two different questions, which aims to describe how the working methods of the staff have changed as a result of Covid-19, in addition the study also wants to explain how communication between the stores and suppliers work. To answer these questions, interviews are conducted with staff at five different stores of three sizes. Furthermore, the results are then analyzed using thematic analysis and modeling. It can be stated that the working methods of the various stores have been involving social distancing to the customers and the tasks for the staff have been shifted. The biggest difference for the ICA organization as a result of Covid-19 has been the communication with suppliers which usually happens through an automatic purchasing system, which has not worked sufficiently and as a result, the entire customer demand has not been satisfied.

På grund av den rådande pandemin i samband med Covid-19 så förekommer orationella beslut och människor får panik. Som resultat av detta så byggs det upp en mycket stor efterfrågan hos matvarubutiker på grund av att kunderna hamstrar ICA:s varor vilket resulterar i att en ännu större panik uppstår hos människor som inte uppfattar dom problem som då uppkommer hos butikerna. Från butikernas sida så medför detta att varuflöden från leverantörer till butikerna utsatts för otroligt stor press. Syftet med denna studie är uppdelad i två olika frågor vilket har som mål att beskriva hur arbetssättet för personalen har förändrats som följd av Covid-19, dessutom vill studien också förklara hur kommunikationen mellan butikerna och leverantörerna fungerar. För att besvara dessa frågor så genomförs intervjuer med personal på fem olika butiker av tre storlekar. Vidare så analyseras resultaten med hjälp utav en tematisk analys och modellering. ▼ There is increasing policy interest in ensuring that resources are used efficiently within New Zealand public hospitals which are under increasing constraint. This thesis presents a narrative based on a qualitative analysis of the impact of the regular provision of efficiency management information on manager behaviour and achievements based on a single exploratory case study research of 11 senior service managers in New Zealand’s largest public hospital. How performance information is currently used by service managers is unknown. The research questions seek to understand to what extent managers’ use the information, what behaviours and actions result, if these managers know what they need to learn to improve performance, and what barriers impede their actions. A qualitative research design was used to collect data from hospital service managers over a six month period. A model for a three stage information response was re-developed from existing processes and applied to the service managers who all received the hospital’s routine monthly performance information; while some participants also received specific efficiency related information. In each of the months, the participant’s perceptions of the performance information and the management of service improvement was obtained. The methodological approach is inductive using both observational and ethnographic approaches to collect qualitative data from regular surveys and interviews with participants. The findings appear to show enhanced collaboration in performance improvement discussions by managers who are provided with the specific performance information than is seen in those managers provided with the routine hospital management information. The enhanced collaboration appears to lead to greater improvements in service efficiency. The qualitative data provides a rich supplementary database of the participant managers’ experience of using performance management information, and from applying a formal Thematic Analysis (TA), management themes are identified to define the experience of the hospital service managers in using performance information. The TA provides a deeper understanding of the use of performance information by hospital service managers. The four themes were identified as: (1) direct leadership, (2) operational feedback; (3) performance signal; and (4) management development. ▼ Universities are more and more challenged by the emerging global higher education market, facilitated by advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This requires them to reconsider their mission and direction in order to function effectively and efficiently, and to be responsive to changes in their environment. In the face of increasing demands and competitive pressures, Universities like other companies, seek to continuously innovate and improve their performance. Universities are considering co-operating or sharing, both internally and externally, in a wide range of areas to achieve cost effectiveness and improvements in performance. Shared services are an effective model for re-organizing to reduce costs, increase quality and create new capabilities. Shared services are not limited to the Higher Education (HE) sector. Organizations across different sectors are adopting shared services, in particular for support functions such as Finance, Accounting, Human Resources and Information Technology. While shared services has been around for more than three decades, commencing in the 1970’s in the banking sector and then been adopted by other sectors, it is an under researched domain, with little consensus on the most fundamental issues even as basic as defining what shared services is. Moreover, the interest in shared services within Higher Education is a global phenomenon. This study on shared services is situated within the Higher Education Sector of Malaysia, and originated as an outcome resulting from a national project (2005 – 2007) conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) entitled "Knowledge, Information Communication Technology Strategic Plan (KICTSP) for Malaysian Public Higher Education"- where progress towards more collaborations via shared services was a key recommendation. The study’s primary objective was to understand the nature and potential for ICT shared services, in particular in the Malaysian HE sector; by laying a foundation in terms of definition, typologies and research agenda and deriving theoretically based conceptualisations of the potential benefits of shared services, success factors and issues of pursuing shared services. The study embarked on this objective with a literature review and pilot case study as a means to further define the context of the study, given the current under-researched status of ICT shared services and of shared services in Higher Education. This context definition phase illustrated a range of unaddressed issues; including a lack of common understanding of what shared services are, how they are formed, what objectives they full fill, who is involved etc. The study thus embarked on a further investigation of a more foundational nature with an exploratory phase that aimed to address these gaps, where a detailed archival analysis of shared services literature within the IS context was conducted to better understand shared services from an IS perspective. ▼ Alcohol use is considered as one of the risk factors that contribute to social and physical harm and disease development globally. Alcohol use onset usually takes place long before adulthood and the surrounding environment has a central role in the development of alcohol use behaviour among children. Thus, targeting parents in prevention programmes has become more common in the past 20 years. This thesis aimed to investigate the relationship between parental attitudes towards children’s alcohol use and their children’s alcohol use and to evaluate a universal parent-oriented alcohol use prevention programme. A systematic review and meta-analysis (k=29 studies) of observational and experimental studies was conducted to assess the former. The findings showed that children whose parents had less restrictive attitudes towards children’s alcohol use had 1.45 (95% CI=1.17–1.80) times higher odds of initiating alcohol use, 1.52 (95% CI=1.24–1.86) times higher odds of drinking alcohol frequently, and 1.58 (95% CI=1.35–1.85) times higher odds of getting drunk. A similar relationship was present between perceived parental attitudes and children’s alcohol use frequency (OR=1.76, 95% CI=1.29–2.40), but no evidence was found for a relationship between perceived attitudes and alcohol use initiation (OR=1.65, 95% CI=0.93–2.94). When data from the Effekt trial was included, the change in pooled effect sizes was mostly marginal. The only exception involved the relationship between perceived parental attitudes and children’s alcohol use initiation, which became statistically significant (OR=1.55, 95% CI=1.14–2.11). Parental attitudes were only weakly positively correlated with perceived parental attitudes (r=0.27, p≤0.001). These findings confirmed and extended the earlier findings presented by Swedish researchers 20 years ago who developed a prevention programme (ÖPP, later called Effekt) to delay and reduce alcohol use among 13–16-year-old children by targeting parental attitudes. The programme was adapted and implemented in Estonia in 2012–2015 among the parents of 11–13-year-old children. The format (i.e. two meetings and two newsletters twice a year, agreements between parents) and the main messages focusing on parental attitudes, alcohol supply and communication were kept unchanged; but more emphasis was put on authoritative parenting, other risk behaviours besides alcohol use and active communication with parents. A matched-pair cluster-randomised controlled trial was carried out among children (n=985) and their parents (n=790) in 66 schools (34 intervention, 32 control) in 2012–2015. While no evidence for an intervention effect was found for students’ alcohol use initiation, past year use or drunkenness, the parents in the intervention group had double the odds (OR=1.92, 95% CI=1.31–2.83) of having restrictive attitudes by the end of the programme than the parents in the control group. ▼ This study is comprised of two distinct parts, a chromatographic study and a didactic study.Chromatographic studyThe need for higher selectivity in chromatography purification has increased in recent years. Multimodal resins, offering novel selectivity, are a possible solution to this demand. The purpose of this study is to develop new multimodal resins with novel selectivity, using an iterative workflow. Therefore, eleven novel multimodal ligands were screened according to binding behavior using a high-throughput (HT) method. The mapping of binding behaviors was comprised of six proteins and 32 different binding buffers, with various salt concentrations and pH-levels, to allow for a wide, but efficient mapping. The data generated from the screenings were presented using binding capacity and partition coefficient and were evaluated against each other using principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA created a ligand diversity map, which separated ligands in respect to binding behavior. The information supplied by the diversity map can be used for selecting ligands for further research. The results from presenting the data in the form of partition coefficient and binding capacity were comparable, which indicated that the effects of initial protein concentrations were low. However, this study found that there are advantages and disadvantages to using both quantities. It is possible that some of the ligands screened in this study will be used in further research and it is likely that the diversity map will facilitate the development of ligands with novel selectivityDidactic studyWith a rising demand for HT screening as a method to evaluate the binding behaviors of novel ligands, in combination with the UN’s goal for quality education for all, the incentives for developing quality educational materials for HT screenings have increased. A first step towards educational materials is to outline common difficulties, thereby creating guidelines for developing educational materials. In this study, guidelines for the development of learning materials for HT screenings have been produced. The guidelines were based on identification of critical steps for the experimental procedure and utilizing employer experience of learning materials in general. Two methods for data collection was used in the didactic study: observations and interviews. The observations were performed during the training of the screening method. For the interviews, three individual and one focus group interview were held. Thereafter, a thematic analysis was performed on the data to generate themes. The results from the observations and interviews indicated that the critical steps of the learning process were the practical parts. The result of the thematic analysis showed the identification of three themes: Cohesion, Facilitation and Interaction. These themes generated four aspirational guidelines: 1. Experiences of presence are common in bereavement. The bereaved person may see the deceased, hear their familiar voice, or otherwise feel they are close at hand. But although common, they are experiences not without controversy. They have come under a variety of descriptions, from 'hallucinations', lacking in meaning and even essentially meaningless, to 'continuing relationships', of rich personal significance. The current thesis represents the first systematic investigation of the properties and meaning of experiences of presence. Narrative biographic interviews with bereaved informants were analysed using Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis. Analytical focus was on the ways in which participants made such experiences meaningful. As a novel approach, this thesis reports several new findings about these phenomena. Firstly, the experiences happened in a variety of bonds (including spouses, parents, grandparents, children, siblings and others), and in a variety of circumstances of the bereavement (including sudden and expected deaths). In all cases, they were described as richly meaningful experiences and as relying on several sources for this meaning. The personal histories of participants were of particular importance in making sense of experiences of presence. Within this context, the experience acquired sense as a continuation of some aspect of the relationship with the deceased. The experiences also had diverse functions, from soothing to destructive. Sometimes, the experiences helped the bereaved to resolve unfinished business with the deceased; at other times, the help was with a much more ordinary problem. On some occasions the experiences of presence caused the bereaved more problems; they simply pronounced the grief or continued a fraught relationship. Participants showed that they had many cultural resources available to them in making sense of their experiences but they did not use all of them. Many informants used some spiritual and psychological ideas to make sense of their experiences. The thesis concludes that many of the most popular theories for these experiences impoverish them by stripping them of their diversity and important aspects of their meaning. The thesis also makes recommendations for psychotherapy for those who have problems of living as a result of their experiences of presence. The study also has implications for psychological research as none of these findings could have been observed through the use of an experimental methodology.
