1. Grigaitienė, Jūratė. Play and improvisation in performances for children and youth in Lithuanian theatre (the late 20th - the early 21 st c.).

Degree: PhD, Art Criticism, 2012, Vytautas Magnus University

The thesis deals with a specific area of culture, extremely problematic and little studied by theatre scientists and critics, viz. performances for children and youth in Lithuanian theatre in the late 20th and the early 21st c. It analyzes the conceptions of play and theatre as cultural phenomena and the dynamics of their relations, identifies the bonds and differences between them, discusses close causal relationships between children‘s games and theatre, and discloses the interrelationship of play and theatrical improvisation, as well as broad opportunities of their application in performances for children and youth. The definition and the genesis of play and improvisation in performances for children and youth are studied from a scientific viewpoint, and the principal types of performances, creative principles, and major characteristics of expression are established that bring out their difference and autonomy with respect to the traditional model of adult theatre. The thesis seeks to prove that innovative experimental performances for children and youth in Lithuanian theatre create a unique and original theatre language not by means of copying traditional performances, but by creative reconstruction and modeling of the strategies of children‘s daily rolepays – plot-based games. Disertacijoje nagrinėjama itin problemiška, teatrologų beveik netyrinėta, specifinė kultūros sritis – spektakliai vaikams ir jaunimui lietuvių teatre XX a. antrojoje pusėje – XXI a. pradžioje.
