▼ Structural composites have been used in aerospace and structural engineering due to their high strength to weight ratio. Composite laminates have been successfully and extensively used in blast mitigation. This dissertation examines the use of the homogenization approach to design and simulate blast resistant composites. Three case studies are performed to examine the usefulness of different methods that may be used in designing and optimizing composite plates for blast resistance. The first case study utilizes a single degree of freedom system to simulate the blast and a reliability based approach. The first case study examines homogeneous plates and the optimal stacking sequence and plate thicknesses are determined. The second and third case studies use the homogenization method to calculate the properties of composite unit cell made of two different materials. The methods are integrated with dynamic simulation environments and advanced optimization algorithms. The second case study is 2-D and uses an
implicit blast simulation, while the third case study is 3-D and simulates blast using the
explicit blast method. Both case studies 2 and 3 rely on multi-objective genetic algorithms for the optimization process. Pareto optimal solutions are determined in case studies 2 and 3. Case study 3 is an integrative method for determining optimal stacking sequence, microstructure and plate thicknesses. The validity of the different methods such as homogenization, reliability,
explicit blast modeling and multi-objective genetic algorithms are discussed. Possible extension of the methods to include strain rate effects and parallel computation is also examined.

Chronic pain is a costly health problem that affects more than 100 million people in the United States. Race differences exist in the way that pain is experienced and in how it is treated. Many biopsychosocial factors contribute to race differences in pain tolerance. Beliefs about race differences in pain sensitivity may be one of these factors. Previous research has identified that individuals’ explicit beliefs about their gender group influence their own pain tolerance on a cold pressor task. Explicit beliefs about race and pain sensitivity have also been identified but have yet to be linked to actual pain tolerance. Implicit beliefs about race are well documented; however, little is known about the extent to which individuals hold implicit beliefs about race differences in pain sensitivity or whether these beliefs contribute to actual race differences in pain. My thesis examined explicit and implicit beliefs about race and pain and explored whether these beliefs moderated race differences in pain tolerance. I found that White participants had a higher pain tolerance than Black participants on the cold pressor task, U=1165.50, p<.01. Participants held the explicit, t(131)=-6.83, p<.01, and implicit, t(131)=6.35, p<.01, belief that White people are more pain sensitive than Black people. Both explicit, b=-0.37, p=.71, and implicit, b=-21.87, p=.65, beliefs failed to moderate the relationship between race and pain tolerance. Further exploration indicated that participants’ comparisons of their own pain sensitivity to that of their race group moderated the relationship between race and pain tolerance, ⍵=4.40, p=.04. These results provide further insight into race differences in pain tolerance. Researchers may consider examining explicit and implicit beliefs about race differences in pain in health care providers to better understand disparities in pain related recommendations.

▼ The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) has repeatedly been used to show that damage to the prefrontal cortex causes deficits in decision making ability (Bechara, Damasio, Damasio & Anderson, 1994). There is currently a lack of research exploring the effects of
implicit and
explicit memory ability on performance on the IGT. Based on the somatic marker hypothesis (Damasio, 1996) it was hypothesised that performance on the earlier stages of the IGT would be influenced by
implicit memory ability affecting the strength of covert, biophysical biases. The performance on the latter stages of the IGT was also hypothesised to be influenced by
explicit memory ability as the participant begins to cement his/her concept of the nature of the task. 38 undergraduate participants (mean age = 21.63) completed a serial reaction time task (SRTT) to measure
implicit memory and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Task (RAVLT) to measure
explicit memory. Significant correlations were found between block 4 of the IGT and the delay and post-interference trials of the RAVLT. Due to the long temporal delay between stimulus presentation and recall it was suggested that long term memory (LTM) plays a major part in the latter stages of the IGT. This was attributed to a stronger LTM having greater ability at encoding and retrieving the results of earlier deck selections therefore forming a more accurate representation of the nature of each deck. Proposals for future research included alternative methodologies to test the influence of LTM on the IGT and recording all participant vocalisations during the IGT.

▼ We presented a sample (37) of Edinburgh University students with a computerised version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), together with two tasks designed to assess
implicit (Serial Reaction Time Task) and
explicit (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test) learning, in order to assess the role of
implicit and
explicit learning in the decision making process. We predicted that participants who performed better at the SRTT (
implicit learning test) would perform better on the first stage of the IGT when no
explicit knowledge of reward/punishments was available to them and participants who performed better at the RAVLT (
explicit learning test) would perform better in the second stage of the IGT when they had some
explicit knowledge of reward/punishment outcomes. We found no correlations between SRTT and IGT performance and only mild correlations between certain RAVLT trials (post-interference and delay) and performance on block 4 of the IGT. Results indicated that IGT performance might not be predicted by individual ability to implicitly or explicitly learn but might instead rely on covert emotion based somatic markers to guide decision making (Bechara et al., 1994). However, there was some suggestion that interference susceptibility and long term memory ability might play a more important role in predicting latter IGT performance than previous research has suggested. Alternatively, based on previous findings, it is possible that limitations in the learning tests used and the way they were administered might have prevented results from reaching a significant effect. Furthermore, without detailed future investigation involving tasks that specifically tax learning mechanisms involved in the IGT, we remain a distance away from fully establishing the role of
implicit and
explicit functioning in the decision making process

▼ The focus of this study is on the use of both explicit and implicit personality tools to predict job performance. Prior research has shown that conscientiousness can predict job performance. However, explicit tools have the disadvantage that people can present themselves in a socially desirable way. This is especially true for personality questionnaires. Whereas strategies like warning people not to fake on an explicit tool or using a forced choice method could help to reduce faking on explicit tools, implicit tools could also be a valuable alternative. Implicit tools do not suffer from faking problems, as people give information about themselves unconsciously. The goal of this study is to increase the knowledge regarding the use of implicit personality tools. More specifically, this study tries to answer the question whether implicit conscientiousness can predict job performance.

▼ Despite the enormous complexity inherent to language, almost all humans acquire and use their native language with apparent effortlessness, simply from being immersed in a normal social environment. It has been hypothesized that conscious processes play only a limited role in language, which may explain how language can be acquired and processed with so little effort. Using event-related potentials, this dissertation addresses this hypothesis by investigating the contributions of
implicit and
explicit neural mechanisms to different aspects of language.
In the first study, the neural mechanisms mediating semantic and syntactic processing of word pairs were examined, using the attentional blink (AB) to manipulate awareness of target words. In the semantic condition, correctly reported target words elicited an N400 effect, while missed target words did not elicit an N400. These results provide evidence that awareness plays a critical role in semantic processing. In the second study, the neural mechanisms that support syntactic processing of full sentences were investigated, using a cross-modal AB to manipulate awareness of syntactic violations. Syntactic violations that were not consciously detected nonetheless elicited a left anterior negativity, indicating that syntactic processing is subserved by
implicit neural mechanisms. In the third study, the neural mechanisms underlying semantic acquisition were examined, using a task in which the meanings of novel pseudowords were learned through context. Novel pseudowords elicited a robust N400 effect after remarkably little exposure but only during an
explicit task and only when word meanings could be explicitly recognized, indicating that vocabulary acquisition is primarily mediated by
explicit neural mechanisms. In the fourth study, the neural mechanisms that support the acquisition of second language (L2) syntax were investigated, using a language-learning task in which participants were trained either implicitly or explicitly. Regardless of training condition, learners who successfully learned the novel L2 syntactic rules showed P600 effects, suggesting that
explicit mechanisms play a crucial role in acquiring L2 syntax. Taken together, results from these studies suggest that awareness plays a critical yet constrained role in language processing, yielding new insight into how language is spoken and understood so effortlessly.

▼ In recent decades research in
implicit learning has expanded beyond classic stimulus-response accounts. Mounting evidence indicates that prior classifications of
implicit learning as a purely motor learning process may no longer be viable. Recent debate has focused upon the validity of
implicit learning as a process dissociable from
explicit learning. Alternative accounts propose unitary learning processes regardless of learning conditions. To better resolve these controversies we compare measures of
implicit and
explicit learning in a classic serial reaction time task with those of a novel serial reaction time task. By comparing measures of learning under both
implicit and
explicit conditions, we examine the distinctness of the
implicit learning process. Whereas in the classic serial reaction time task subjects must respond to and learn a sequence of stimulus locations, in the novel serial reaction time task subjects must respond to and learn a sequence of stimulus identities. The successful acquisition of a sequence of stimulus identities challenges notions of the specificity of
implicit learning as a phenomenon of non-cognitive motor learning.

Aversive racism theory and internalized racism research suggest that both explicit and implicit bias should be considered when examining racial bias reduction. Research has also suggested that sex and ethnicity/race may moderate explicit and implicit bias. Results indicate that European American men had the highest explicit racial bias scores, and they were the most likely to have a significant reduction in ethnic studies courses. In general, European American participants had higher scores of implicit racial bias than participants of color. Levels of implicit racial bias did not statistically significantly change for participants across the semester. However, enrollment in a distanced/online ethnic studies course may influence students’ implicit racial bias. Implications for future research concerning racial bias reduction in ethnic studies courses as well as implications for teaching are discussed.

implicit memory representations. These two memory components have distinct neural processing pathways. Extensive studies focusing on discrete and serial reaction time tasks (SRTT) have been done to explore these processing pathways to establish a link between memory consolidation processes and cortical excitability changes in motor cortex (M1) after training. Research has revealed distinct cortical excitability changes in M1 that differentiate a SRTT as either
implicit or
explicit. In the area of motor skill/learning, rhythmic bimanual coordination tasks are often treated as different from SRTT for a variety of reasons. The primary goal of this study was to determine if cortical excitability changes in M1 following training with a 90° bimanual coordination pattern would be more like changes observed after training with an SRTT in an
implicit or
explicit context. To accomplish the goal, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to probe M1 excitability before and after training. A secondary goal of this study was to examine whether or not training altered participants’ ability to perceptually discriminate aspects of the trained coordination pattern. A feature of
explicit representation is the ability to recall the sequence after training, a feature not characteristic of an
implicit representation. A recognition test introduced after a delayed-retention test of the trained 90° pattern was used to determine if training and delay interval interacted to establish changes in perceptual discrimination ability. The bimanual task required participants to produce the 90˚ relative phase pattern with finger abduction/adduction motions. Training
was facilitated by using a Lissajous plot to provide concurrent feedback. Before training and at 6 and 21 minutes after training motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were measured from the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle. Participants had either a 30 minute or 6-hour delay after training before performing a set of retention test trials of the 90° bimanual pattern and then performing a recognition test of the finger motions used to produce the 90° pattern. At the end of training participants produced the 90˚ phase pattern with smaller error and variability compared to the beginning of training, and maintained the skill level gained at the end of practice until the delayed retention test. Cortical excitability increased above baseline at the 6 min and 21 min TMS probes after training, consistent with the pattern observed following training with an
implicit SRTT. Participants were able to perceptually discriminate finger motions of the trained 90° pattern during the recognition test. The results suggest that participants’ developed an

Negative attitudes towards people with mental illness contribute to the ongoing and debilitating stigma associated with mental illness in Australia. Measurement of these negative attitudes can be difficult due to problems with self-report, especially socially desirable responding patterns which tend to diminish the measured bias. The present study attempted to investigate and compare implicit and explicit measurements of mental illness attitudes in a sample of undergraduates enrolled in psychology subjects. The implicit measurements were taken using the implicit association test (IAT) and the explicit attitudes were measured via self-report. The IAT measurements indicated that the sample was unbiased, on average. While this is an encouraging finding, there are several potential explanations which must be explored in future research. It is possible that results from this sample are unrepresentative of the general population. It is also possible that implicit and explicit bias against people with mental illness are different constructs, and further that the implicit measurement does not tap into the kind of bias which has greatest relevance for stigma. This study may prompt further investigation into the construct validity of the implicit measure and encourage researchers to exercise caution when interpreting implicit findings using measures whose psychometric properties are unclear.

Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) has been used as a means of measuring
implicit attitudes, or assessing
implicit verbal relations, for several years. Much of the early work with IRAP consisted of validating the results obtained using the IRAP with those of another well-documented tool used for measuring
implicit attitudes (i.e., IAT; see Barnes-Holmes, Barnes-Holmes, and colleagues). More recently, another iteration of the IRAP instrument, the Mixed Trial-IRAP (MT-IRAP), has emerged and early work has compared its results to those of previous studies employing the traditional IRAP instrument. Findings thus far have been promising, leading researchers to begin asking the next logical set of empirical questions; primarily, to what extent are the measures captured by the IRAP instruments indicative or predictive of more overt, probable patterns of behavior in naturalistic settings, such as the home, the workplace, or the community at large. Recent work has begun to address this question and more research is needed. The present study investigated this question as it related to patterns of behavior in organizational settings by asking participants to complete both of the two IRAP instruments comprising target stimuli related to the workplace and workplace behavior, in addition to exposing participants to an analog data entry work task, with dependent measures related to those concepts assessed in the IRAPs. IRAP results were then correlated with the overt behavior patterns from the analog work task to evaluate the extent to which the IRAP results were predictive of such behavior, in this particular (i.e., organizational) setting.

▼ Systemic racial and ethnic biases continue to permeate the American social order, often manifesting without conscious awareness. Previous research examining
implicit biases against Blacks using paradigms such as the
Implicit Association Test (IAT) and startle eyeblink have found evidence of White bias towards Blacks, often in the absence of
explicit biases. In the current study, we examined whether these findings are generalizable to bias against Hispanics. Twenty-seven White female participants (mean age = 21.5 years) completed an
explicit measure of Hispanic bias, the IAT, and a computerized startle task. During the startle task, participants viewed color photo primes of White and Hispanic males (20 White and 20 Hispanic) while eyeblink electromyograph (EMG) data was recorded. On 20 trials (10 White and 10 Hispanic), the prime was accompanied by an auditory startle probe (50-msec 100db white noise). Analysis of the EMG data revealed larger eyeblink amplitudes during Hispanic primes than during white primes (F(1, 23) = 7.92, p = .01). IAT reaction times were also indicative of bias toward Hispanics (i.e., Hispanic + bad trials were significantly faster than Hispanic + good trials; (F(1, 23) = 56.85, p < .001)). Correlational analyses revealed no significant relationships between the three measures of bias, suggesting that each instrument may be tapping into different aspects of ethnic attitudes. This study extends prior startle research by demonstrating that the findings from previous Black/White startle studies are generalizable across race and ethnicity

preovlađuje shvatanje da naše ponašanje usmeravaju dva tipa
procesa: svesni procesi, koji su rezultat promišljanja, nad kojima
imamo kontrolu i u koje ulažemo više energije, i automatski
procesi, za koje nam je potrebno manje resursa i kojih često nismo
svesni. Kada je reč o stavovima, pretpostavlja se da su eksplicitni
stavovi (mereni samo-izveštajem) rezultat prvog, a implicitni
stavovi, (mereni indirektnim tehnikama), drugog tipa procesa.
Dosadašnja istraživanja ukazuju na širok opseg variranja
koeficijenata prediktivne validnosti implicitnih i eksplicitnih
mera stavova, a samim tim i na važnu ulogu različitih moderatora u
određivanju veličine ovih koeficijenata. Jedan od takvih moderatora
je i afekat. Uprkos tome što postoji niz teorija i istraživanja
koji se bave ulogom afekta u socijalnoj kogniciji i ponašanju,
moderatorska uloga afekta u odnosu stava i ponašanja je ostala
relativno neistražena tema. Glavni cilj ovog rada stoga je bio
proveriti da li afekat ima moderatorsku ulogu u prediktivnoj
validnosti implicitnih i eksplicitnih mera. Uz to smo ispitivali i
da li afekat direktno utiče na različite oblike ponašanja i na koji
način su implicitne i eksplicitne mere stavova povezane sa
ponašanjem, bez obzira na potencijalni uticaj afekta. U skladu s
tim osmislili smo seriju ogleda u kojima smo merili dva tipa
stavova i povezivali ih sa ponašanjem u tri domena: (1) zdrava
ishrana (2) pušenje, i (3) odnos prema starijim osobama. Ogledi su
sprovedeni u dve faze. U prvoj smo prikupljali podatke o
implicitnim i eksplicitnim stavovima ispitanika u odgovarajućem
domenu, dok smo u drugoj fazi merili afekat i odgovarajuće
ponašanje ispitanika (količinu konzumiranih slatkiša, količinu
konzumiranih cigareta i različite oblike socijalne diskriminacije
starijih osoba). Afekat je u prvom i trećem ogledu bio
eksperimentalno indukovan, dok je u drugom ogledu bio registrovan
putem dnevničkih mera. U istraživanju je učestvovalo ukupno 267
ispitanika. U prvom ogledu su rezultati svedočili u prilog
moderatorske uloge afekta u prediktivnoj validnosti implicitne
mere, ali ne i eksplicitnih mera stava o ishrani. Implicitna mera
je bolje predviđala količinu konzumiranih slatkiša u negativnom
afektu i to samo za ispitanike koji su bili skloniji samokontroli u
konzumaciji slatkiša. U drugom ogledu utvrđeno je da afekat jačeg
intenziteta podstiče na veću konzumaciju duvana, ali da nivo ove
konzumacije zavisi od interakcije implicitnih i eksplicitnih mera
stavova. Taj nivo je bio najviši kada je postojalo poklapanje
između implicitnih i eksplicitnih mera stava prema pušenju, a
najniži kada nije bilo ovog poklapanja. Moderatorska uloga afekta u
poslednjem ogledu koji se bavio stavovima prema starijim osobama
nije utvrđena. Kada je reč o ulozi afekta u predviđanju ponašanja,
utvrdili smo da postoji pozitivna veza između intenziteta afekta i
količine konzumiranih cigareta, dok u domenima konzumacije slatkiša

compares the effects of two types of sexual appeals when product types are
considered. In addition, sensation seeking is also incorporated into this research to
examine how it may sway the effectiveness of the sexual appeals.
The present study uses experimental design to investigate the advertising effects
of different types of sexual appeals (non-sexual appeal vs.
explicit appeal vs.
implicit
appeal) and product type (sex-related vs.non sex-related). A 3X3 factorial design is
conducted. The ad effects are measured by purchase intention and attitude toward the
brand to observe the response under different scenarios.
The results indicate that when a sex-related product is promoted, sexual appeals
are more effective than non-sexual appeals. There is an interaction effect between
sexual appeal and product type. To be specific, the
explicit sexual appeal is more
effective than the
implicit sexual appeal when a sex-related product is promoted.
However, such superior effects disappear as it turns to non sex-related product
promotion. Additionally, for individuals with higher sensation seeking, the
explicit
sexual appeal is more effective than the
implicit sexual appeal when the product is
related to sex. On the opposite, for those with median degree of sensation seeking, the
implicit appeal is more effective than the
explicit appeal to promote the product which
is not sex-related. Finally, for those with low degree of sensation seeking, there is no
difference in advertising effectiveness between
explicit and
implicit appeal.
According to these findings, this study suggests that marketers should consider not
only the product they promote but also the sensation seeking of the target consumers
before choosing an appropriate sexual appeal to maximize the advertising effects.

▼ Since consumers are flooded by advertising nowadays, it is an important task for the advertisers to catch consumer attention and enhance their purchase attention. According to the advertising literature, metaphor advertising is commonly used to increase consumersâ interests toward an ad, involvement with an ad, ad elaboration and leads to ad effectiveness. This research proposes two types of metaphors:
explicit vs.
implicit. We also examine the moderating effects of verbal metaphor and creative mind-set on metaphor advertising effects.
The present study uses experimental design with a 3 (ad type: non-metaphor vs.
explicit metaphor vs.
implicit metaphor) x2 (verbal metaphor: with vs. without) x2 (creative mind-set: high vs. low) factorial design. Six different scenarios are established through fictitious product ads. Creative mind-set is classified based on a priming task. Ad effects are measured by attitudes toward the ad, attitudes toward the brand, and purchase intention to observe the responses under different scenarios.
The results indicate that the
explicit metaphor advertising is more effective than the non-metaphor advertising. Moreover, verbal metaphor decreases the effect difference between
explicit metaphor ad and
implicit metaphor ad. As for consumers with high creative-mind, the ad effects of
explicit metaphor advertising is better than the
implicit metaphor advertising, and the
implicit metaphor advertising is better than the non-metaphor advertising. On the contrary, no such differences are found for low creative mind-set consumers. The findings suggest that marketers should consider the verbal metaphor when they design the
implicit metaphor advertising in order to improve the advertising effects.

L’identification d’une double condition de qualificationrévèle l’existence d’une catégorie obligationnelle particulière qui, n’étant pas envisagée en tant que telle par le droitpositif, invite à l’analyse. L’étude des obligations non matérialisées se révèle nécessaire afin de comprendre tant leur mécanique de fonctionnement que les fondements de leur effet contraignant. Les unes, qualifiées d’obligations non matérialisées par renvoi explicite, s’identifient par la stipulation, par les parties, d’une clause par référence dans l’instrumentum qui fait expressément référence à leur caractère obligatoire. Si leur effet contraignant est, donc, justifié par la forceobligatoire du contrat dans lequel la stipulation contractuelle est prévue, le contenu imposable à la relationcontractuelle n’est, toutefois, pas retranscrit dans l’écrit principal. Les autres, qualifiées d’obligations non matérialiséespar renvoi implicite, sont celles qui s’ordonnent aux contractants sans que ces derniers ne justifient d’une volontéexplicite de s’y soumettre. Si cette définition est similaire à celle des obligations imposées en ce qu’elles ne sont pasnécessairement rattachables à la commune intention des parties, ces obligations non matérialisées s’en distinguent parleur fondement. Lorsque les obligations imposées se justifient par la lettre ou la mise en oeuvre d’une dispositionlégale, les obligations non matérialisées par renvoi implicite s’expliquent par la notion d’utilité. La révélation des obligations non matérialisées dans les contrats s’attache à un intérêt pratique puisqu’au terme decette démarche, une visibilité relative à leurs effets permet d’identifier les lacunes que leur effet obligatoire suscite et,partant, les solutions qu’il apparaît opportun d’appliquer. La nature et l’importance des difficultés révélées justifient,alors, la nécessité d’établir un traitement juridique, mais également, de déceler les éléments indispensables à uneproposition qui leur est adaptée. Il se constate que les insuffisances liées au caractère obligatoire des obligations non matérialisées ne leur sont pas spécifiques en ce qu’elles peuvent, du fait de leur caractère général, être décelées dans d’autres situations contractuelles. Les traitements proposés dans la présente étude ont, ainsi, vocation à s’appliquer à l’ensemble de la matière contractuelle.

around a virtual building or watched a recording made made by a
matched (free walk) subject. Subjects then performed several tasks:
judgment of relative direction, scene recognition and navigation
back to the start. The aim was to evaluate the the relative
sensitivity of these measures, and to compare learning in active
and passive learners under implicit (Experiment 1) and explicit
(Experiment 2) learning instructions. Results demonstrated an
advantage for active learners in the navigation back to start task
and no difference in the judgment of relative direction task under
both implicit and explicit conditions. In the recognition task,
performance was above chance levels for all factorial cells. A
gender moderated trend for an advantage for active learners was
found only in implicit learning.

▼ Abstract The purpose of this cross-sectional study was
to identify the relationships between explicit and implicit
self-esteem, offender categorization, risk of reoffence,
narcissism, and psychopathy. Participants were 90 adult male
offenders sentenced for a nonviolent, violent, or sexual offence
against a child, recruited from both federal and provincial
institutions. Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem
Survey, a self-esteem implicit association test (IAT), the
Narcissism Personality Inventory, and the Self-Report Psychopathy
Scale – III. File information was used to collect demographic
information and to score the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide and/or
Sexual Offence Risk Appraisal Guide. It was found that sexual
offenders had lower explicit, but not implicit, self-esteem scores
than the nonviolent and violent offenders. Offender group, risk of
reoffence, narcissism, and psychopathy could not be predicted by
main effects or interaction effects of self-esteem. Overall, the
results suggest that self-esteem, whether explicit or implicit, at
most plays a very minor role in criminal behaviour.

▼ Researchers have had a long-standing interest in the relative contributions of
implicit and
explicit processes to judgments and behaviours. Although conscious deliberation has often served as the "gold standard" for normatively correct decisions, researchers are increasingly beginning to focus their attention on the relative strengths of
implicit processes, pointing to situations in which, it is claimed, they can sometimes exceed rational deliberation. In this work, I explore both the descriptive question of how individuals come to trust the dictates of an
implicit or
explicit process when the two pull in opposing directions, as well as the prescriptive question of when
implicit and
explicit processes can serve as reliable guides for sound judgments and adaptive behaviours. Three lines of work examine these questions. In the first line (Studies 1-3), I ask how people come to trust intuition or reason in the context of situations in which they experience a conflict between them. I find consistent support for what I call the state cuing hypothesis-that is, the notion that people attempt to resolve such conflicts by looking for cues in their current mental states that help them decide what to do. Specifically, I find that when the features of one's mental state matches the features people associate with intuitive or rational thought, this serves to make one source of input "feel right," causing it to exert a greater influence on the decision. In the second line of work (Studies 4-8), I assess the extent to which intuitions can successfully capture relevant aspects of one's prior experiences with decision objects, thus allowing them to serve as a reliable source of information when choosing among them. However, across 4 replication attempts, I find that intuitive judgments are perhaps not as reliable as past research would suggest. Finally, in the third line of work (Studies 8-12), I assess whether
implicit attitudes can be quickly revised in light of recent, relevant experiences. I find consistent support across the studies that
implicit attitudes can indeed be rapidly revised in light of new, countervailing information, thus suggesting that
implicit attitudes can serve as a reliable guide for behaviour even in situations in which recent experience is inconsistent with past learning. Taken together, this research attempts to advance our understanding both of the factors that can influence the extent to which people believe that
implicit and
explicit processes are valuable and reliable, as well as the actual contribution of each type of process to normative and satisfying judgments and behaviours.

▼ Previous research has shown that the attitudes individuals hold towards their romantic partner often greatly impact relationship outcomes. Traditionally, attitudes towards one’s romantic relationship were assessed using explicit measures. Implicit measures however recently gained popularity owing to the fact that they have been demonstrated to provide attitudinal information beyond that which is communicated through explicit measures. Given the recent advent of the incorporation of implicit measures into relationship research, and previous conceptualizations that framed attitudes as bipolar, relatively few studies have assessed both explicit and implicit attitudes, let alone explicit-implicit ambivalence. Those that have, have shown explicit-implicit attitudinal ambivalence to influence thoughts and judgments, and predict behaviour/behavioural intentions. Few studies however have taken an interest in the interplay between explicit and implicit measures, and whether antecedents and outcomes differ as a function of a participants’ explicit-implicit ambivalence profile. The present research extends previous literature by examining the antecedents and outcomes specifically associated with each of the two possible attitudinal ambivalence profiles in a relationship context. This study is therefore unique in its’ intentions to investigate and contrast the unique psychological underpinnings of differing relationship-specific ambivalence profiles, while using a never-before combined selection of explicit measures, implicit measures, antecedent and outcome variables. Results indicated significant, positive correlations between explicit measures. Conversely, correlations among the implicit measures were extremely weak. With regards to the explicit-implicit measure correlations, one of the explicit measures consistently produced significant correlations when combined with each of the implicit measures. Both antecedents and outcomes were differentially associated with each of the two ambivalence profiles. Individuals who were low in ambivalence and attachment-related avoidance were more likely to display explicit-implicit ambivalence such that their attitudes were more positive on the implicit measure than the explicit measure. Further, it was when avoidance and ambivalence decreased that the explicit-implicit discrepancy increased.

Com o objectivo de demonstrar que a associação entre a beleza e a positividade reflecte uma crença de que uma fonte atractiva associa-se à dimensão de credibilidade, reflectindo uma heurística que apenas se processa a um nível implícito, procedeu-se à realização de uma medida implícita (Stroop) e uma explicita que manipulassem a atractividade e a sua relação com palavras de credibilidade e com palavras não relacionadas com credibilidade. Construi-se também uma tarefa que acedesse às atitudes dos sujeitos relativamente à qualidade de produtos. Os dados sugerem que os sujeitos associam a atractividade com credibilidade quer implicitamente quer explicitamente e que não realizam o oposto para faces não atractivas. Os dados demonstram também que implicitamente os sujeitos adoptam respostas com base na valência das palavras, sendo porém no caso de fontes atractivas também influenciados por este tipo de fonte. Explicitamente os sujeitos continuam a ser influenciados pela valência, associando mais palavras positivas a qualquer uma das fontes. Para além disso parece haver indícios que os sujeitos são influenciados por esta manipulação de estímulos nas suas atitudes, ao classificarem produtos, com maior qualidade quando associados a faces atractivas e menor quando associados a faces não atractivas.
Assim os sujeitos utilizam a atractividade como um “atalho” podendo servir como heurística, associando a beleza não só a características mais positivas mas à própria dimensão de credibilidade, quer implicitamente quer explicitamente. Porém os dados sugerem que esta crença não é bidireccional, pois os sujeitos não realizam o oposto para faces não atractivas.
This research try to demonstrate that the relation between beauty and positivity reflects the belief that an attractive source links with credibility, and that reflect a heuristic, but only at and implicit level. For that it was built an implicit (Stroop) and explicit measure that manipulate this variable and its relation to credibility words and non-credibility words. It was also build a task to access the subject’s attitudes toward the quality of different products. Throughout the analysis that was developed, the data suggest that subjects associated attractiveness with credibility either implicitly or explicitly and do not perform the opposite sides to a non attractive faces on both tasks. The data also show that subjects are influenced implicitly by the valence of words, but also, in the case of attractive source, are influenced by that kind of face. Explicitly, the subjects continued to be influenced by the valence of the word, by associating more positive words with any kind of faces. It was also clear that the subjects are also influenced in their attitudes by this manipulation of the stimulus classifying products, with higher quality when they are related to an attractive face than when they are not.

implicit and
explicit attitudes toward the use of violence and their capacity to predict past and future partner-directed aggression in a nonclinical sample.
Implicit violence attitudes were measured using a modified version of the
Implicit Association Test. A battery of commonly-utilized
explicit self-report measures indexed
explicit attitudes toward intimate partner violence (IPV). Measurement of violence attitudes occurred prior to engaging in the Articulated Thoughts in Simulated Situations behavioral aggression paradigm. Participants (N = 81) were randomly assigned to conditions of imagined provocative (n = 48) or non-provocative (n = 33) relationship scenarios and given the option to stick pins in dolls representing characters depicted in the scenarios. Simultaneously, participants "thought out loud" into a microphone about their thoughts. After the scenario, participants were provided with a list of physically and verbally aggressive behaviors and asked to indicate, if given the opportunity, their desire to have engaged in each behavior while they listened to the scenario. The results indicated that individuals with a history of recent psychological IPV perpetration showed more positive
implicit attitudes toward violence relative to participants without a psychological IPV history.
Implicit violence attitudes were unrelated to participant history of physical IPV perpetration.
Explicit, but not
implicit attitudes moderated the relationship between relationship provocation and the desire to engage in physically violent behavior.
Implicit measures of violence attitudes did not show an incremental contribution toward the prediction of behavioral aggression on the present measures over and above
explicit self-report measures of the construct.

▼ Electronic laboratory activities offer opportunities to help students learn about concepts and develop practical competencies in electronic circuit systems. Evidence in the literature suggests that the effectiveness of laboratory activities might be affected by the type of instructions provided (
explicit or
implicit), and the lab environment (physical or virtual) in which the activities were performed.
This study investigated the effect of different written task instructions (
explicit versus
implicit) and lab environment (physical versus virtual) on students’ scores in an electronic circuit task. This study was a quantitative experiment that used a repeated measure factorial design to determine how the written instructions used in different environments affected students’ scores.
Study results showed that there was no statistical significant difference in scores when students were presented with implicitly or explicitly written instructions. Similarly, results indicated no significant difference in scores when students used either physical or virtual environments. However, the computed effect size revealed that virtual environments might have a slightly higher effect on students’ scores. These results suggest that the type of written instructions presented and the lab environment used may not have significantly affected students’ scores.

▼ This thesis investigates the relationship between vocabulary and grammar learning aptitude (measured by two LLAMA subtests) and accuracy constituents in adult L2 speakers’ oral and written discourse productions. It also examines the relationship between the speaking and writing attainment, and the extent to which the link between performance in aptitude and speaking differs from the one for writing. Oral and written picture narratives elicited from 30 ESL speakers were analyzed and coded in terms of lexical and morphosyntactic errors per 100 words. The results of the Spearman correlation analyses revealed that vocabulary learning aptitude is significantly associated with the command of lexis and morphosyntax in writing,
explicit grammar learning aptitude shows no significant association with accuracy in both production modes, and time availability in writing has no influence on the interplay between
explicit and
implicit knowledge with regard to the access of lexical forms. No significant differences were found with respect to the strength of aptitude-speaking and aptitude-writing relations.

▼ Huvudsakliga syftet med studien är att beskriva hur medarbetare i konkurrensutsatta yrken uppfattar kunskapsdelning samt hur de vill att det ska ske på deras arbetsplats. För att ta reda på detta utfördes 7 intervjuer med informanter som levde upp till specifika kriterier för att försäkra relevanta svar och insikter. Intervjuerna transkriberades och analyserades med ad hoc metoderna hitta mönster och teman, skapa kontraster och teoretiskt/begreppsligt för att redogöra innebörden i informanternas svar. För analys av material användes Ellströms handlingsteoretiska teori och Nonakas kognitiva teori om kunskapsdelning. Resultatet visar att medarbetare uppfattar kunskapsdelning som erfarenhetsutbyte och förmedling av information. Medarbetare uppfattar kunskapsdelning som något som sker både kollegor emellan och mellan medarbetare och kund. Medarbetare vill dela och ta emot meta-kogntiv och teoretisk kunskap genom fysiska träffar där reflektion, erfarenhetsutbyte och diskussion sker i det utvecklingsinriktade lärandet. De kunskaper som de huvudsakligen delar sker genom ett anpassningsinriktat lärande och är implicit, procedur- och teoretisk kunskap. Delningen sker huvudsakligen via samtal på telefon och genom fysiska träffar, men procedurkunskap och till viss del implicit kunskap delas även genom mejl och andra digitala medel. Kunskapsdelning börjar framför allt genom socialisering där implicit kunskap skapas och internaliseras. Viss kunskap som förmedlas är explicit och kan internaliseras genom egen reflektion eller gemensam diskussion. Resultatet visar även på att medarbetare i konkurrensutsatta yrken uppskattar och önskar mer tid till fysiska träffar där reflektion och diskussion kring tidigare erfarenheter och problem är på agendan. Medarbetare uppfattar kundmöten som en stor del i deras kunskapsdelning vilket verksamheter bör uppmärksamma och försöka förstå sig på för att möjliggöra utveckling. Genom kundmöten och observation skapar medarbetare egna säljknep och processer som de överlag inte delar med kollegor trots att de själva vill ta del av den typen av teoretisk kunskap. Trots den digitala utvecklingens fart finns en önskan och uppfattning av att möten och samtal med kollegor är mest givande och utvecklande, vilket är viktigt att poängtera och fokusera på för verksamheter som vill vara i framkant gällande kunskapsdelning.

▼ Previous research has revealed that children who are exposed to interparental violence are at an increased risk of involvement in dating violence later in life, a relationship that has been found to be mediated by attitudes toward violence. However, such research has focused solely on
explicit attitudes, and has not taken into consideration the role of
implicit attitudes. The current study sought to fill this gap in the literature by exploring the potential mediating role of both
explicit and
implicit attitudes in the relationship between interparental violence and dating violence among a young adult sample. Participants were asked to complete self-report measures regarding their exposure to interparental violence, dating violence involvement and
explicit attitudes towards violence, as well as two measures of
implicit attitudes. The results revealed that for females,
explicit, but not
implicit, attitudes mediated the relationship between interparental violence and dating violence. However for males, both
implicit and
explicit attitudes were found to mediate the relationship between interparental violence and dating violence, suggesting that
implicit attitudes are an important, though under-researched, predictor of dating violence. The current findings have implications for clarifying the importance of
implicit attitudes in theories of the intergenerational transmission of violence, as well as for intervention programs targeting dating violence attitudes and behaviours.

implicit attitűdöket vizsgáltam egyetemisták körében a bevándorlók megnevezésének tekintetében. Vizsgálatomhoz az
Implicit Asszociációs Tesztet, illetve Ommundsen és Larsen (1999) kérdőívét alkalmaztam. Az eredmények alapján a szóhasználatnak nem volt szignifikáns hatása az
implicit attitűdök alakulására, azonban tendenciaszerű hatások megfigyelhetők. Az
explicit mérés során összességében semleges attitűdök váltak megfigyelhetővé.

▼ Durant la dernière décennie, l’évolution du Web a été marquée par une forte croissance des services publiés et qui s’est accompagnée d’une explosion considérable du nombre d’usagers dont les profils et contextes sont divers et variés. Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse traitent de l’optimisation de requêtes de services Web où le profil/contexte de l’utilisateur joue un rôle central. Il s’agit de sélectionner un service ou une combinaison de services pertinents parmi une masse importante de candidats compétitifs et capables de réaliser une tâche requise. Ces services candidats devant répondre au mieux aux exigences demandées par l’utilisateur selon un ensemble de critères non-fonctionnels. Dans notre approche, les critères non-fonctionnels considérés sont tous associés aux préférences du demandeur de service. Un intérêt plus important est alors porté à l’utilisateur qui se trouve au coeur du processus de sélection. La diversité du profil et du contexte de l’utilisateur, et également ceux des services cibles,rend ce processus encore plus complexe. Notre étude se focalise, dans un premier lieu,sur l’analyse des différentes approches de sélection de services Web existant dans la littérature. Nous mettons, notamment, en évidence leur contribution à la résolution des problèmes inhérents à la sélection des meilleurs services dans le but de satisfaire les critères non-fonctionnels formulés dans la requête. Dans un second temps, notre intérêt s’est porté sur la modélisation de spécification de l’offre et la demande de services,de leurs contextes et profils ainsi que les deux classes de préférences utilisateurs :explicites et implicites. Enfin, nous proposons une nouvelle famille d’approches d’optimisation qui intègre une stratégie de reformulation de requêtes par introduction des préférences implicites. Le concept clé de ces approches est un mécanisme d’inférence flou permettant d’accomplir un raisonnement déductif sur les informations liées au profil et contexte de l’utilisateur. Le principe consiste à combiner les deux familles de préférences utilisateur, tout en considérant conjointement les profils et les contextes des services et de l’utilisateur. L’application de la théorie des ensembles flous dans l’optimisation des requêtes à préférences des utilisateurs, en intégrant un module de raisonnement sur les informations liées à l’utilisateur, s’avère d’un intérêt majeur dans l’amélioration des qualités des résultats retournés. Nous présentons à la fin de l’étude une série d’expérimentations pour montrer la validité et la pertinence des approches proposées.

▼ I argue that our concept of belief is ambiguous between two kinds of psychological phenomena. Active beliefs, as Mathew Boyle has coined them, are ascribed from a first-person perspective primarily in order to make sense of the subject’s grasp of the available evidence, but also in order to prescribe which proposition they ought to avow. They are inherently normative, unique to humans, and the holding of them is best construed as an activity rather than the possession of a mental state. Our other concept of belief is, in contrast, typically ascribed from a third-person perspective in order to describe an overarching pattern in someone’s behavior in terms of a dispositional state. I call them passive beliefs, because they are often realized in habits, associations, and other similarly “judgment-insensitive” psychological mechanisms, which we share with nonrational animals. One of the central issues I seek to address with this distinction is the question of how best to model our doxastic agency or those capacities in virtue of which we are able to “make up our minds” about what to believe. Closely related to this issue, however, are apparent failures of our doxastic agency in which a belief-like pattern of behavior persists, say, to treat not-P as if it were true, despite having decided or judged that P is actually true. I argue that the best account of these sorts of cases is in terms of a conflict between the belief the
subject actively holds and one they only passively have. I object, therefore, to a variety of alternative accounts that presuppose only a single kind belief, like Eric Schwitzgebel’s in terms of in-between beliefs, as well as Tamar Gendler’s, even though it is supplemented with a kind quasi-belief she calls alief.

▼ This essay is about the European union freetrade treaty negations with Mercosur. I have in this essay used a qualitative content analysis, to study from the EU perspective the reasons to why, the EU and Mercosur suspended the free trade treaty negations 2004, and after several years resumed the negotiations again in 2010. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding from the EU perspective of why free trade negotiations were suspended and then resumed. In order to achieve a deeper understanding of this event, I have applied neorealism and neoliberalism on the explicit statements and the implied actions, as these theories may provide different explanatory power of implied causes of negotiations. I have come to the conclusion that the theoretical perspectives can indeed explain explicit statements and implicit actions for suspended and resumed negotiations with Mercosur. The implicit reasons for suspended negotiations are among others that the EU has an egoist thinking concerning a free trade treaty. The EU wish to gain more benefits then Mecosur with a free trade treaty, which lead to Mercosur wanted to suspend the negotiations. Another implicit reason is that the EU was thinking entirely on how much that were going to gain in relation mercosur, because of this kind of thinking, the EU probably realized that they were going to loose on a treaty. The implicit reasons for resumed negotiations are among others are that the EU genuinely wants to collaborate with Mercosur as much as they can with the purpose to gain together as much as possible. Other implicit reason is mutual dependence, which means that the EU needs Mercosur and vice versa to strengthen the global economy, and to give job opportunities and growth on both sides. Another implicit reason to resume the negotiations again is that the EU has grown stronger as an economic block, because of this, the EU has greater advantage of their demands with Mercosur. Further more, this essay surely point out that the EU has a lot of difficulties to come up with an agreement with Mercosur. But hopefully the EU can in the nearest future reach a free trade treaty with Mercosur.
