▼ One of the mathematics standards for high schools stated in the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS, 2010 Appendix A, p. 60) is the understanding of the Complex Number system, performing arithmetic operations with complex numbers, representing complex numbers and their operations on the complex plane, and using complex numbers in polynomial identities and equations. In this thesis, we trace back the history of complex numbers and formulate a set of problems based on the history. The thesis gives a description of the Common Core standards and goals. The exercises based on the history of complex numbers are shown to be in accordance with the Common Core standards. The different approaches to teaching complex numbers are described with examples. Their merits and shortfalls are discussed from a teacher’s mathematical perspective. A list of Guidelines on teaching complex numbers for high school teachers is given in the last chapter of this thesis.

▼ In India, globalized flows of bio-medical discourse, practices and technologies are
reshaping the field of reproductive healthcare, and the performance of childbirth more
specifically. These projects aim to produce institutional delivery rooms that are "safe and
modernized" by equating the utilization of westernized, obstetric techniques for
managing delivery with better birth outcomes. Yet, these projects often evoke dynamic
tensions between the imagined labor rooms NGOs seek to produce and the lived realties
of labor in a local context. In this thesis, I examine the ways NGOs market and
disseminate state and global discourses around safe, institutional delivers to local
communities through a case study of one NGO working in rural southern Rajasthan.
Drawing on data from participant observation and in-depth, semi-structured interviews
with NGO staff and skilled-birth attendants employed by community health centers, I
argue that at the interface of NGO, state, and global relations of power, a commodified
discourse in the form of Evidenced-based Delivery (EBD) practices is emerging. This
discourse is marketed through a political economy of hope that promotes EBDs as
essential for safe delivery. In this system, NGOs function as conduits for transmitting
idealized notions of the safe and modern delivery room, and thereby affect a shift in what
skilled-birth attendants and communities come to expect from their childbirth experiences
– expectations that I argue are often difficult to meet given current training levels,
limited economic resources, and a diverse set of cultural values around childbirth. My
findings indicate that while Evidence-based Delivery practices may improve birth
outcomes in some contexts, in the delivery rooms of rural Rajasthan, they are functioning
essentially as technologies that capitalize on the political economy of hope by evoking
the medical
imaginary.

▼ Five studies were conducted to investigate the emotional and cognitive factors
associated with the presence of imaginary companions in children aged 3 to 9 years. In
Study 1 parents were asked to complete a questionnaire which sought information
regarding the characteristics of children with and without imaginary companions.
Overall, a significantly larger number of children with imaginary companions were
reported to be very imaginative and to have an increased predisposition to fantasy
compared to children without companions.
Study two investigated the fearfulness, anxiety, and temperament characteristics
of imaginary companion and non-imaginary companion children. Examination of
maternal ratings on the Fear Survey Schedule for Children-H Parent (FSSC-BP), the
Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and the Short Temperament
Scale for Children (STSC), found that a significantly larger number of imaginary
companion than non-imaginary companion children were reported to experience
internalised anxiety associated with sensitivity to the environment and the expectations
of others.
Study 3 further examined the predisposition to fantasy of imaginary companion
and non-imaginary companion children by asking them a series of questions regarding
their dreams, daydreams, and scary thoughts. Analysis of children's taped responses
indicated that a significantly larger number of imaginary companion than non-imaginary
companion children experienced vivid mental imagery that incorporated a fantasy
element.

▼ This practice-based project investigates the development of
imaginary characters and friends, and the creation of
imaginary worlds through narrative illustration. Central to this research is an exploration of visual approaches to the invention and portrayal of a young girl, the central character, and her animal companions. The female child operates as a symbol for all young females, while the
imaginary companions represent aspects of the girl’s psyche and emotional state as they relate to the self. The author’s illustrations are a narrative, drawn from personal childhood experiences or reflect the girl’s, dealing with the escape from everyday life and the creation of
imaginary friends and worlds.

Our work is based on the hypothesis that there is something beyond culture that would act as intermediary between cultures. In other words there might be a common or universal level that allows them to share or integrate their different world-views. Our work aims to expose its relevance by questioning semiotics starting from the concept of culture. In that respect, it puts into perspective the theories of culture based on structuralism inheritance, such as Lotman’s semiosphere and Fontanille’s forms of living, in order to define a semiotics model capable of describing the dynamic of any cultural form. So as to make this problematic tangible, our work leans on the idea that any culture produces images of the world that embody their own space-time and collective imaginary. The Visual allows studying how cultures share their world-view and influence each other. A discussion of the transformation of identity (Jullien, Barthes) permits noticing that mediation is a natural principle of culture likely based on elementary mind forms (Lévi-Strauss, Jung). An analysis of adverts picturing beautiful women in Japan (Shiseido) show that cultural exchange’s dynamics follows an underpinning logic for integrating new designs from another culture. In fact, transformation process is far more significant than what hybridization of shapes suggests. It convokes the entire social environment it yet symbolizes and…

This research develops a comprehensive study about teachers imaginary of children in a public kindergarten school in São Luís / MA. For this, seeks to check the images present in the narratives, drawings, reports of childhood, and other manifestations of the teachers; understand childhood revealed by these images and to analyze what they suggest about the place reserved for this phase of life for researched group. The path taken to that weaving is given by comprehensive phenomenology, based on hermeneutics, the main theoretical is Gilbert Durands (1993, 2002, 2010) anthropology of the imaginary and support discussions on specific areas of the human sciences: Childhood Sociology, Anthropology of Children, Developmental Psychology and Pedagogy, performing a convergence of these theories to the understanding of the researched object. Images were collected from the questionnaires, conducting an interview, the representation of childhood through plastic images and narrative on such images. The subjects of this research were six (6) teachers at a public school of that city. We found that in the group studied appear imaginary elements that reveal a balance with regard to the symbolic representation of childhood, but in general, we find that there is a greater tendency to a daytime representation, with an antagonistic appreciation of child. The understanding of the images revealed attitudes of…

▼ Imagining the capital: Letters to JK is a Brazilian story. It is a story of Brasilia, the capital of the country since 1960, through the voice of ordinary people and workers who imagined it from afar, and hoped to find better life conditions there. This voice was registered in written language in letters addressed to President Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira (known as JK), during his term, from 1956 to 1961. We have selected approximately 100 of these old letters available today from the Public Archives of Distrito Federal, and from them we have processed expectations, orders, suggestions and complaints, all addressed to the President. They are fragments of the everyday life of those who wrote them fifty years before. This is the story of the capital through the eyes of the imaginary, expressed by the simple people, authors of those letters. We come to the conclusion that this imaginary is "embedded in the historic social"- in what concerns shelter, jobs, basic services. This is a story of the searching for life conditions and social visibility, in which perspectives and contradictions of a building capital are melted. Past, present and future intertwine, building a story of Brasilia and of Brazilians who imagined it, and of those who still imagine and build it nowadays.

▼ One of the most heavily researched topics of cognitive development concerns children's growing understanding of people's behaviors as reflecting mental states such as beliefs, desires and intentions. Anthropomorphism is the overextension of this conceptual framework, referred to as "theory of mind", to nonhuman animals and inanimate objects. In this dissertation, I investigate the development and correlates of anthropomorphism building on and extending past research with children and adults. In Study 1, I investigated the relation between anthropomorphism, social understanding, and social behaviors that are known to correlate with theory of mind, such as empathy, and prosocial attitudes in a college sample (N = 919). Contrary to my predictions, results showed that anthropomorphism is only weakly related to the measures of social understanding. There was, however, some evidence for a link between anthropomorphism and
imaginary companions; individuals who had a history of
imaginary companions scored higher on anthropomorphism. In Study 2, I examined the link between theory of mind and anthropomorphism in preschool children. In addition, I investigated the developmental trajectory of anthropomorphism from age 4 to 6 and the relation between anthropomorphism and role play and social preferences. Seventy-four children (36 girls; Mage = 5 years, 5 months; SD = 9 months) took part in this study. In order to assess anthropomorphism in this age group, I used two methods: interview and movie narrative measures. Results revealed no age-related changes in anthropomorphism scores of the children. As in Study 1, I did not find a strong relationship between the theory of mind measures and anthropomorphism. There was, however, more evidence for a link between the interview measure of anthropomorphism and role play, and social preferences of children. Overall, in both studies, theory of mind, the most obvious candidate as a correlate of anthropomorphism, was, at best, not a strong predictor of the anthropomorphism, suggesting the need to rethink how developing knowledge about people is related to the overextension of this knowledge to nonhuman entities. It is possible that a rudimentary understanding of humans is necessary to be able to overextend it, but whether you overextend it might be linked to other factors.

Vast work of medieval literature, the Roman de Perceforest retells the arthurian genealogy and the progressive rise of a christian monarchy. This christian power emerges on an island populated with wizards and faeries, renowned for its marvels and its creatures, and upon which two kings reign, Betis and Gadiffer. Yet, supernatural events are narrated with numerous allusions to ancient and medieval sciences, which allow an educated reader to uncover the illusionist behind the wizard, the female physician behind the faerie, and the natural phenomenon behind the unfathomable power of a mysterious beast. These sciences then account among the most potent forces that drive the novel toward Christendom. Giving reasons behind supernatural events, revealing impostors, sciences put forth the concept of Nature, and set the stage not only for the advent of christianity, but also for the strengthening of the royal power. Through the king and noblemen and women, it is in fact the power of nature and christianity that is constructed.

▼ Ritgerð þessi dregur saman birtingarmynd einnar persónu í Discworld bókum Sir Terry Pratchett: Dauðann og rætur hans í þjóðtrú og þjóðsögum okkar. Fyrst er persónan skoðuð ásamt tengingu hennar við ímynd Dauðans á miðöldum sem kemur m.a. frá hugmyndinni um Father Time, reiðmönnum heimsendis og dans hinna dauðu. Til að svara þessum spurningum styðst ritgerðin við bókaseríuna ásamt ýmsum þjóðfræðilegum heimildum, m.a. bók Propps, Morphology of the Folktale (1968).

▼ “The Caribbean
Imaginary in Southern Women’s Literature” examines the U.S. South’s often contradictory approaches to viewing the Caribbean. While the image of the U.S. South has long been constructed by imagined fantasies, the southern authors in this project often thrust their own images onto the Caribbean
imaginary. Throughout this project, I argue that over the past seventy years, the imperialist bent towards the Caribbean manifests in a variety of forms: media manipulation, patronage, fantasies, and nostalgia. At times, the Caribbean is seen as an imagined utopia full of potential, however this construction often erases the historical renderings of economic and political revolutions.

▼ This thesis investigates the uptake and circulation of one iconic image of the War in Iraq. Taken in 2003, the image of two American Soldiers, one Iraqi man, and the infamous Statue of Saddam Hussein became one of the most circulated images
of war throughout the United States. Specifically, this thesis looks at the ways in which this iconic image (re)creates the American national imaginary at three different moments in the war: 2003, 2010, and 2013. Throughout the analysis, citizens relate
to the image in three different ways—as citizen-liberators, citizen-democratizers, and citizen-commemorators. This investigation addresses the way in which nationalism, identification, and definition can be mapped onto the same image at three different
points in time and illustrates how one visual image works within the democratic process. Overall, this study contributes to what we know about visual rhetoric, citizen identities, and iconic images of war.

The imaginary of the French people who emigrated in Tunisia during the colonial period called the French protectorate was particularly rich as indicated by the myriad of testimonies from many authors who dabbled in writing it down on paper. This thesis seeks to study the Tunisian colonial era from a literary perspective through a systematic approach of the texts and the vision of the authors on the assented exile of French Tunisia. An exile, but also a return to the main land. For many of them who lived the end of the French protectorate, the difficulty was to move to a country which was their own, but not entirely. The choice of the analytical method relies on an imagology study of this matter which will assess the complex notion of imaginary from the myth-analysis point of view. Then the different components will be verified and applied to the context of colonial Tunisia. Regarding the latter topic, literature seems to be the ideal approach to study and highlight the richness of the imaginary of the French Tunisians through the great diversity of texts available : memoirs, testimonies, novels, personal documents, photographes, etc. Finally, the personal experience of the author in the context of the French protectorate in Tunisia will allow to consider the topic via analytical objectivity and a subjective analysis.

▼ In this thesis, I develop a history of thyroid hormone treatment (THT) that centers on the bodies of animals and women between 1890 and 1970. This history contextualizes the current debate between two forms of THT, desiccated and synthetic. Drawing on the discourses present in biomedical journals, I trace how medical practitioners used the animals and women to demonstrate and make sense of THTâ s effectiveness over time. As such, I study what Catherine Waldby terms the â biomedical
imaginary,â or the speculative fabric of scientific thought, to demonstrate how an â ordinaryâ medical technology crosses and reinforces the conceptions of gender and animality.
THT emerged in the 1890s as an organotherapy, or a medicine made from animal organs. Like other organotherapies, general physicians used THT for a wide variety of ailments that had not been scientifically proven through the practices of vivisection or animal experimentation. From its emergence, THT served as a site of tension between scientific researchers and general practitioners. This tension only increased when a synthetic form of THT was invented in the 1920s, when scientific researchers embraced synthetic THT and general practitioners continued using desiccated THT. At the center of the controversy were the productive and subversive relationships of animals and women to biomedical meaning-making. Over the twentieth century, methods of defining THTâ s effectiveness and purity were defined in opposition to these bodies. These chemical measures combined the specialist and physicianâ s measurement of THTâ s clinical effectiveness, which led to a preference for synthetic THT.

▼ Climate change challenges fundamental notion of political time, the temporal relationship that embeds actors and processes. Yet this topic is underanalyzed in academic literature, especially when it comes to non-Western states. India has been one of the most prominent actors at the United Nations climate negotiations and also likely to be heavily affected by extreme climate shifts. Over the 30-year history of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Indian government has framed the temporality of climate change in two ways. First, from 1988-2004, it constructed and followed a secular, past-oriented
imaginary of climate change. Beginning in 2005, and accelerating with the election of Prime Minister Modi in 2014, the government has begun to construct and follow a sacred, future-oriented
imaginary. In this way, the State has moved from rhetorically framing climate change as a significant problem to an opportunity that can be met if India and other societies follow conservative Hindu precepts.

▼ Since the series of etchings known as the Carceri d’Invenzione created by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1788) there has been extensive debate as to their meanings. Taking advantage of drawing and the print medium, Piranesi manipulated perspective to create dislocated and irrational architecture that challenges the viewer and creates a deep sense of unease. This thesis analyses the compositional issues the Carceri provoke and explores the ambiguous relationship they forge between architecture and pictoriality. Piranesi was creating a rupture within the conventions of architectural representation; the Carceri serve as a denunciation of contemporary architectural practices he perceived as stagnant. The prints are projections that raise questions about the very nature of architectural representation that are still relevant to modern practices. Chapter 1 is a Literature Review that includes various theories and interpretations of the Carceri from the eighteenth-century to the present time. Chapter 2 examines the architectural theories and ideas being developed during the eighteenth-century and the intellectual context for the prints. Chapter 3 is a close analysis of the prints, paying attention to the instances of illogical spaces created, with a particular focus on those prints that contain examples of discontinuous space and distorted perspectives that have not been identified or discussed in detail in the previous literature. Chapter 4 examines the way Piranesi uses the temporal to explore architectural representation; the importance of history and the past to his work; and how printmaking and etching in particular enable Piranesi to encompass two critical elements, enlightenment rationality in the form of engineering, architectural analysis and description, and the expressive powers of the imagination.

▼ My work questions the ongoing dialogue between technology and nature. This dialogue is most evident in landscapes and their respective ecosystems, specifically rivers. These bodies of water are a fluid mirror reflecting a wavering view of ourselves, a constructed human presence within the natural environment. This thesis offers a way of understanding these pipelines, dams, canals and attendant infrastructures in a conceptual manner. These encapsulating forms that interrupt, shape and utilise the natural realm are the facades of a hydrological imaginary. ‘A Hydrological Imaginary’ addresses this field of tension between the river and its artificial counterparts - canals, pipelines and human-made containments. The core of the thesis is a discussion of rivers, dams and water-based infrastructure that illustrates how environmentally engaged art discourses respond to the technological and sociocultural elements of water. This paper discusses the strategies of artists that work with bodies of water through photography, such as Australian artist David Stephenson and German artists Bernd and Hilla Becher along with my own photographic work. Multi-disciplinary artists such as UK artists Simon Starling and Rachel Whiteread are also discussed, along with the work of American artist Robert Smithson and American artist John Roloff. These conceptual art practices are to be connected to American writer David E. Nye and Scandinavian Professor Terje Tvedt’s ideas on the underlying histories of geopolitics, the technological sublime and Australian writer Martin Thomas’ ideas on the role of environmentalism in art. Thus, this thesis illustrates how art agitates the hydrological realm and contributes to the creation of new reflections, meanings and possibilities from the narratives of contained water, submerged histories and sociocultural attributes to the landscape. I have used my practice to bring context to these concepts around the ideas of contained nature and the movement of water in two solo exhibitions that featured video, photographic and kinetic sculptures created in a range of staged encounters with rivers in Eastern Australia. Alongside my previous work based on the Yangtze River in China in 2012, and work made within the Blue Mountains in 2012 – 2015 prior to commencing this Masters project, this thesis is a distillation of these seemingly disparate bodies of water. It is a narrative on historic systems, aesthetics and possibilities of the natural and the assisted movement of water.

▼ This dissertation analyzes moments in which presidents interact with transnational audiences, identifying and explaining their rhetorical strategies for developing a global
imaginary. Specifically, I first consider how George H.W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev negotiate geo-political and spatial metaphors leading up to their joint press conference, symbolically ending the Cold War. Second, I discuss how Bill Clinton and George W. Bush universalize the trope of “democracy” in their speeches before the United Nations General Assembly. Third, I explain how Barack Obama figures transnational citizens and himself as a global leader in his transnational town hall meetings. Together, these case studies show the ways contemporary presidents call forth particular understandings of “the global” through speech. Politically, this study is significant because it broadens our understanding of the institution of the presidency from the framework of a national institution to that of a global one. Rhetorically, this study illuminates the relationship between presidential speech, transnational audiences, and the rhetorical
imaginary of the global sphere.

▼ This thesis proposes a new theory of the gaze to understand specific choreographic strategies of dance-theatre practitioner Pina Bausch and film-maker Jacques Tati and their potential impact on spectators. It examines how Bausch in her early works Blaubart (1977) and Café Müller (1978) and Tati in his masterpiece Play Time (1967) conceive of and deploy choreography as a critical practice and framework for exploring and ultimately reorganising the relationship between being and seeing in the new physical and politico-cultural spaces of post-World War Two modernity. By interpreting the mutually illuminating strategies of Bausch and Tati in relation to recent work on the Lacanian gaze, I come to argue that these artists use choreography not simply to facilitate critical looking and self-reflexivity but also to disrupt the spectator’s capacity to position herself altogether in relation to images. I describe this disruptiveness as a process through which gestures and spaces stop meaning and start looking back at spectators. Jacques Lacan's conception of the gaze as objet petit a offers a means of understanding the disruptive sense of images and/or objects looking back at the
subject. Recent interventions in psychoanalytic film theory crucially revise earlier conceptions of the gaze in film studies precisely to argue that the gaze ruptures the plenitude of meaning presumed to be established in the realm of the
Imaginary and instead induces an experience of the Real that is necessarily unrepresentable. This thesis contends that the
Imaginary is in fact crucial to understanding the aesthetic territory from which the gaze emerges and its relation to ways of moving and practices of becoming/being. I therefore examine how the selected choreographies create the conditions for the gaze by reproducing the structure and imagery of the
Imaginary. Lacan's notion of the gaze is used to understand the way in which the selected works bring their spectators into an encounter with their own becoming as subjects. By challenging the frames through which spectators look, the works ultimately challenge political narratives of subjectivity based on hierarchical and historically inscribed visual relationships with bodies, objects, and images.

▼ Imaginary science is a creative approach to the examination of the human mind. It is a domain that finds itself between irreconcilable fields of study, and one that is established through a collection of disparate and sometimes contradictory ideas. The paradoxical assemblage of these ideas is encouraged by a conception of mind as both a process and a spectrum, as well as a methodology that acknowledges its own role in the construction of its conclusions. In utilising such a methodology, the individual components of research have organically formed their significance amongst one another. Collectively they point to a deeper understanding of the mind, while simultaneously and just as importantly, establish why their interconnection through ‘assemblage methodology’ is necessary in the first place. The formulation of
imaginary science grew from an obsession with cohesively comprehending personal creative processes, and the ineffable mental experiences entwined with these processes led to some early realisations. Firstly, that such a perplexing endeavor was being stimulated by a deep introspective struggle between contradictory ways of thinking, a multiplicity that is inherent in each of us to different degrees. Secondly, that the mind is a unique entity for every individual, and must be studied accordingly. Lastly, was the acknowledgement that the processes and content of the mind are in fact one and the same. The endeavour to interconnect my understanding of mind, consciousness and creative practice, has led to a symbiotic relationship between that research and practice. Drawing and collecting are the encompassing processes of that creative practice, and my experience of those processes has been an enduring and significant influence on my particular approach to their research. That approach has in turn substantially altered the way my creative practice communicates my experience of those processes, as the outcomes of my research have substantially transformed my experience of them.Creation, introspection, consciousness and mind, are all intertwined in process. I have made myself the case study
subject of an
imaginary science, and accordingly present that subject’s process and content, as both topic and practice; a cohesive understanding of how those conclusions came to fruition.

To refer to the existence of a photographical imagination arises an ideological issue when bringing the status of photography into question. To try to demonstrate the existence of this imagination; consideration should be given to a movement fundamentally reflecting the notion of the symbolist movement. Therefore, would it be necessary to consider how symbolism is founder of the photographical imagination? At that time, photography widely fits into a positivist system, it is the best recording scientific technique. Hence, photography has emerged from the middle of the 19th century as a new type of objectivity whose main characteristic is the exclusion of the observer's subjectivity. As for Symbolism, it reached its peak around 80-90s. It will oppose a searching for unity philosophical conception with scientific classification principle, based on separation and difference. Despite that, Symbolists have chosen to use the photographical tool. On the one hand, they took into account the most scientific and objective photographs over that…

This study aims to understand the playful dimension of the landscape in an area located on the landmark between the cities of Santo André and São Bernardo do Campo, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. In this areais located the Parque Estadual Chácara da Baronesa, consolidated only in 2014. Before to its opening to the public, it was an abandoned area for years. This abandonment of the area allowed the invasion of people in search for place of residence, in a part of the park area, which was
consolidated in a slum. Around the park and the slum are located residential neighborhoods, both in Santo André and São Bernardo. The aim of this research was to study the slum and this environment. The methodological procedures were workshops with the dwellers of the slum and the surroundings, with children and adults, because it is understood that the playfulness is part of the human dimension in all ages. As a complementary method was applied the test of the imagery, ATL-9, because it is believed that the understanding of the symbolic universe of people can reveal meanings that are not always expressed in interviews and conversations. It was also developed a theoretical framework on key issues that underlie the research: the playful, the landscape and the imaginary. It is believed that the understanding of those realities, through the tools used, reveals how the playful dimension is perceived and experienced by people who are also the builders of their landscapes.

Costa Rica has undergone a touristic turn of its economy since the 1990s, with a tourism identity based on the representations of a peaceful state without armed forces as well as the wilderness. This research examines the discourse on the Costa Rican exception deployed within the context of tourism development. A genealogy of the composition of these images reveals the deep relation between the tourism imaginary and the national imaginary. Indeed, the tourism imaginary takes on the main historical characteristics of the Costa Rican national ideology shaped within the context of its independence, but also entails the incorporation of an environmental paradigm into the national imaginary. This work analyzes the instituting dimension of the tourism imaginary as participating in the production of space and place, and the production of an image of the nation associated with figures of nature. However, this tourism imaginary is also hegemonic and exclusive, as was the national imaginary in the nineteenth century, which promoted the idea of a democratic and peaceful Costa Rican nation based on the theory of the white race. From the historical discourse on whiteness to the contemporary discourse on nature, this study investigates the role of the tourism imaginary in the reproduction of spatial racialization processes against the Costa Rican indigenous and…

▼ This dissertation addresses shortcomings in the sociological study of leisure through providing a new conceptual approach for understanding human action and meaning making. It reformulates leisure as the leisure imaginary, the sphere in which the individualized person works out problems of identity and community. The leisure imaginary takes the Heidegerrian starting point that our being is a being before death and that it is our fundamental preoccupation with death that gives life its sense of urgency. In late modernity, however, our coping mechanisms for dealing with our fear and anxiety over death have been compromised which has left people disembedded and individualized. It is the thesis of this dissertation that leisure imaginaries have arisen to fill the gap left by institutions like religion and the family that formerly provided ontological security and ontological exigence. The leisure imaginary, then, is a response not only to our being before death but to the conditions of late modernity, the anxieties and preoccupations of our time, our social imaginary or lifeworld. It is argued that the leisure imaginary allows for a stronger interpretive understanding of the late modern conditions that people encounter and their responses to these conditions. The different permutations of the leisure imaginary exemplify different ethically oriented narratives of re-embedding in the pursuit of a meaningful life. In addition, and in contrast to academic treatments of leisure today, this work argues for the value of contemplative or philosophical leisure and the need to preserve, and recreate as needed, a space for this vocation.

▼ In recent years, negative
imaginary systems have
attracted great attention due to their unique properties. The
notion of negative
imaginary systems was inspired by inertial
systems. If a negative
imaginary system with a single input and
single output is considered, the output of a system follows but
lags behind any sinusoidal input to the system by not more than 180
degrees. Additionally, the relative degree of a negative
imaginary
system is between zero and two. Due to these characterisation of
negative
imaginary systems, some applications of negative
imaginary
systems are found in such areas, as large space structures,
multi-agent networked systems, and nano-positioning control, etc.
In this thesis, some tests are derived to characterise negative
imaginary properties. Additionally, internal stability and
characterisation of a positive feedback interconnection of negative
imaginary systems are also discussed. Firstly, continuous-time and
discrete-time negative
imaginary lemmas, which are applicable on
real, rational, proper negative
imaginary systems available in the
literature, are derived. These lemmas generalise previous results
in order to accommodate negative
imaginary systems with possible
poles at the origin in continuous-time (respectively poles at z=+1
in discrete-time). The results proposed in these lemmas easily
reduce to earlier conditions when the same assumptions are imposed.
The introduced necessary and sufficient conditions involving linear
matrix inequality conditions give complete state-space
characterisation for the full class of real, rational, proper,
continuous-time, negative
imaginary systems (respectively
discrete-time, negative
imaginary systems). Moreover, the dimension
of the linear matrix inequality Lyapunov variable in these negative
imaginary lemmas is smaller than or equal to the McMillan degree of
the negative
imaginary system. Secondly, a general robust stability
theory is formulated to unify all stability results in all theories
related to continuous-time negative
imaginary systems to date. In
the literature, a dc loop gain condition was used to test the
internal stability of a positive feedback interconnection of a
continuous-time negative
imaginary system without poles at the
origin and a continuous-time strictly negative
imaginary system
under instantaneous gain assumptions. By removing these restrictive
assumptions that were imposed in prior results, necessary and
sufficient conditions are provided for continuous-time negative
imaginary systems with poles on
imaginary axis, excluding at the
origin. The conditions for determining the internal stability of a
feedback system directly depend on a mixture of steady-state and
infinity gains of the system. On the basis of these stability
theorems, general stability results are derived for the case where
the most general class of continuous-time negative
imaginary
systems is interconnected in a feedback system. A key feature for
deriving these theorems does not require any complicated matrix
factorisations that make the results less…

▼ In recent years, negative imaginary systems have attracted great attention due to their unique properties. The notion of negative imaginary systems was inspired by inertial systems. If a negative imaginary system with a single input and single output is considered, the output of a system follows but lags behind any sinusoidal input to the system by not more than 180 degrees. Additionally, the relative degree of a negative imaginary system is between zero and two. Due to these characterisation of negative imaginary systems, some applications of negative imaginary systems are found in such areas, as large space structures, multi-agent networked systems, and nano-positioning control, etc. In this thesis, some tests are derived to characterise negative imaginary properties. Additionally, internal stability and characterisation of a positive feedback interconnection of negative imaginary systems are also discussed. Firstly, continuous-time and discrete-time negative imaginary lemmas, which are applicable on real, rational, proper negative imaginary systems available in the literature, are derived. These lemmas generalise previous results in order to accommodate negative imaginary systems with possible poles at the origin in continuous-time (respectively poles at z=+1 in discrete-time). The results proposed in these lemmas easily reduce to earlier conditions when the same assumptions are imposed. The introduced necessary and sufficient conditions involving linear matrix inequality conditions give complete state-space characterisation for the full class of real, rational, proper, continuous-time, negative imaginary systems (respectively discrete-time, negative imaginary systems). Moreover, the dimension of the linear matrix inequality Lyapunov variable in these negative imaginary lemmas is smaller than or equal to the McMillan degree of the negative imaginary system. Secondly, a general robust stability theory is formulated to unify all stability results in all theories related to continuous-time negative imaginary systems to date. In the literature, a dc loop gain condition was used to test the internal stability of a positive feedback interconnection of a continuous-time negative imaginary system without poles at the origin and a continuous-time strictly negative imaginary system under instantaneous gain assumptions. By removing these restrictive assumptions that were imposed in prior results, necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for continuous-time negative imaginary systems with poles on imaginary axis, excluding at the origin. The conditions for determining the internal stability of a feedback system directly depend on a mixture of steady-state and infinity gains of the system. On the basis of these stability theorems, general stability results are derived for the case where the most general class of continuous-time negative imaginary systems is interconnected in a feedback system. A key feature for deriving these theorems does not require any complicated matrix factorisations that make the results less…
