Le but

This research is part of a larger study led by
Myreille St-Onge and funded by the SSRHRC, which aims to better
understand the personal and environmental factors who are linked
tho the hearing voices phenomenon. More specifically, this present
masters’thesis focuses on the strategies deployed by individuals to
cope with disturbing voices. In fact, the aim of this research is
to describe the strategies and others factors who seem to yield to
effective results. Two focus groups were held with eight
participants. A double perspective analysis was realized to respond
to our objectives. First, a comparison between participants who
show a greater capacity to cope (group A) and those experiencing
difficulties to cope (group B) with their voices was done.
Secondly, this analysis focusses on the cognitive ABC model. The
results suggest that participants of group A have several
characteristics in common. We also observe that certain strategies
appear to lead to more effective results. In addition, the analysis
based on ABC model reveals that it is promising to intervene on the
beliefs’system of people hearing voices. A presentation of
participants recomands intended to other voices hearers, relatives
and professionals working with them as well as social mesures
suggestions end this descriptive study.

communication consciente.
Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is widely
considered as an effective and efficient way to provide health and
social care. Nevertheless, little research has focused on the issue
of communication in the context of IPC, which this study aims to
rectify. This is done by exploring the effects of communication
training on the collaborative practices of two teams in the health
system and social services. This research also documents the
adaptability and applicability of that training. A mixed
methodology is used. The results underline that after training, a
relative increase was observed for both some of the individual
performances (improvement in the person-centered approach, as well
as role-clarification) and the group performance (collaborating to
make a shared action plan). The participants also documented the
adaptability and applicability of training. They considered it
useful, whereas the proposed formula seemed appropriate even though
an accompaniment after training would maximize learning. Keywords:
collaborative, interprofessional collaboration, communication,
interprofessional education, non-violent communication, conscious
communication.

recherches futures. Mots clés : comportement sexuel problématique,

Children and adolescent sexual behavior problems

experience from clinical work demonstrate the importance of
including parents in treatment addressing SBP. This qualitative
study examines the following question: What are the factors
influencing parents’ motivation to engage in treatment, following
the disclosure of SBP by their child? Three parents participated in
a semi-structured individual research interview. Transcripts of the
interviews were analyzed following grounded theory guidelines. How
the disclosure is dealt with, search for meaning, crisis management
and dealing with emotions, extent of collateral damage and
protection behaviors make parents plead for a professional’s help.
However, therapeutic help was never offered to those parents.
Recommendations are made regarding social policies, intervention

forces.
Neurocognitive disorders currently affect
approximately 35.6 million people worldwide (Alzheimer's Disease
International, 2009). According to researchers, these affected
people are generally perceived as study subjects, causing their own
perceptions to be neglected. It is likely the experience, impacts,
and symptoms of the disease will be altered during its evolution;
nevertheless the progression remains slow. Consequently, the
vulnerability caused by the illness should not outshine the skills
and abilities the individuals retain. This research explores the
subjective phenomenon of the global experience of the disease in
terms of perceptions, expectations and feelings elders living at
home experience while affected by a neurocognitive disorder.
Therefore, the results of this study propose to highlight the
manner in which these people value themselves and their preserved
skills despite the losses caused by the disease, from a
strength-focused perspective.

For over one hundred years, sentences are served in
the community in the province of Quebec. It is generally recognized
that offenders who receive (voluntarily or not) rehabilitative
treatment while serving their sentence have recidivism rates
significantly lower than those not receiving it. However, there is
no consensus yet on the process that binds these treatments to
other factors specific to the offender or to his social environment
and the absence of offense. That is why some researchers ceased to
assess the individual effects of treatment on recidivism and
decided to focus their attention on the process that leads to the
cessation of criminal behavior (desistance from crime). Their
understandings of this process…

People with mental illness frequently have
difficulty integrating into the employment market (MESS, 2008).
They have the single highest unemployment rates among all groups of
people with disabilities (NAMI, 2011). Objective: This study aims
to increase our understanding of the integration of people with
mental illness into employment by interviewing people who
benefitted from “ÉquiTravail” employment services. Methodology:
This qualitative study is based on seven interviews with workers
suffering from mental illness. An “ÉquiTravail” staff-member was
also interviewed. The conceptual framework is the strength based
model of Rapp and Goscha (2012). Results: The results were
categorized into five themes: the motivation to work, the elements
that affected them when obtaining a job, the factors that influence
maintaining their employment, the work integration services and
their level of social functioning.

femmes.
The present study examines the social and economic
integration of immigrant women inRouyn-Noranda, a remote city in
the province of Quebec, Canada. Two specific objectives were
pursued:1) to understand the social and economic integration
process of immigrant women living in Rouyn-Noranda, and 2) to
analyze the positive and negative factors that influence their
integration. In order to achieve these objectives, semi-structured
interviews were conducted with thirteen female participants who had
immigrated from Latin America, North America, Africa, and Europe.
This exploratory, qualitative study draws on the intercultural
model. The findings show that participants mentioned linguistic
barriers, non-recognition of education and experience gained
abroad, lack of higher training adapted to women’s realities, and
psychological health impact (frustration, depression and stress) of
local winter conditions as the main obstacles to their social and
economic integration.

sociale.

questions with consumer-providers and deinstitutionalized persons.
Data were analyzed based on the human development and disability
creation process model and the strength-based model. It appears
that it would be difficult to isolate the influence of the
relationship with the consumer-provider from the influence of other
elements on the development of the individuals under study. In
order to maximize the benefits of a relationship with a
consumer-provider and to support individuals along the recovery
process following deinstitutionalization, this research puts forth
a number of recommendations relative to the hiring of
consumer-providers and their integration into work teams as well as
a number of measures that should be implemented for help towards
the deinstitutionalization of individuals. Keywords: peer support,
mental disorder, recovery, prolonged psychiatric
institutionalization, deinstitutionalization, human development and
disability creation process, strength-based model, social
inclusion.

actions.
Since the creation of Local Community Service
Centres (CLSC), community organizers (OC) have implemented a
liaison function that has changed according to the various periods
of implementation of the community approach that characterizes
these institutions. During deployment of the CLSCs network
(1972-1985), the OCs supported the linkage of services and
community. During the institutionalization period (1986-2003),
these practices moved to the support of collaborative approaches
around social and health issues. The thesis explores these changes
and answers the question of what has become since 2004 the liaison
function within the framework of population-based responsibility of
Health and Social Services Centres (CSSS). Functions are a blind

▼ The research of this thesis is mainly focused on automotive electronics including two topics, a Receiver (Rx) with over-voltage protection for FlexRay systems and an 8:1 high-voltage analog multiplexer (
HV MUX) for Battery Management Systems (BMS) of Electric Vehicles (EVs).
The first topic discloses a Receiver with over-voltage protection for FlexRay systems, which is a networking standard for automotives. The proposed design is complied with the FlexRay electrical physical layer specification V3.0.1. The Receiver provides a data rate of 10 Mbps with -10 V ~ +15 V input common mode voltage (uCM) operating in the range of -40 °C ~ +150 °C. An over-voltage protection circuit is included in this Receiver, which is capable of rejecting over-voltage surges up to ±60 V. This design was implemented using TSMC 0.18 μm CMOS
HV mixed-signal based generationâ¡BCD technology.
The second topic presents an 8:1 high-voltage analog multiplexer for Battery Management Systems. This design is a
HV MUX for battery voltage measurement systems, which can detect the battery voltages from a battery module. In this thesis, the testing vehicle is a battery module composed of 8 Li-ion batteries in series. The operating voltage range for each Li-ion battery is 2 V ~ 3.65 V. Thus, the highest input voltage for this
HV MUX is 29.2 V, and the output range is 1 V ~ 2 V.
HV switches and
HV subtractors are also proposed to resolve the high input voltage problem of
HV MUX. Finally, a battery voltage measurement system was realized by integrateing this 8:1
HV MUX with a 2nd-order Delta-Sigma ADC and an oscillator. This battery voltage measurement system was carried out on silicon using TSMC 1P3M 0.25 μm 60V
HV CMOS technology.

▼ Characterizing the different HIV-1 subtypes prevalent in a geographic region as well as understanding the origin and dissemination of these subtypes are essential to define prevention and intervention strategies targeting local HIV/AIDS epidemics. The present study analyzed 895 pol sequences, available at GenBank, aiming to describe the main HIV-1 subtypes prevalent in Brazil, the resistance profile of naïve lineages, the prevalence of signatures and epitopes in protease and reverse transcriptase (RT), and reconstruct the origin and the main dissemination patterns of HIV-1 subtypes B and C in Brazil. The subtype B (65.6%) was the most prevalent followed by subtypes C (14.1%) and F (6.1%). The recombinant forms represented 14.1% of the analyzed sequences. At protease, eight major mutations which reduce the susceptibility to protease inhibitors (PIs) were found: L24I, D30N, M46I/L, I54L/V, V82L and I84V. At RT, 16 mutations associated to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) resistance, A62V, D67N/G, T69E/N/S/d, K70R, V75I/L/M, F77L, V118I, Q151M and M184V, and 18 mutations that confer resistance to the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), V90I, A98G, L100I, K101E/N/Q, K103N/R, V106I/L, V108I, E138A/G/K, V179D/T, Y181C and G190A, were identified. The transmission of lineages resistant to PIs, NRTIs and NNRTIs were 1.2%, 1.8% and 2.1%, respectively. Regarding pol genetic variability, we identified two possible signatures, N37K e R41N, at HIV-1 subtype C protease, two T CD4+ epitopes and 18 T CD8+ epitopes, of which five were at protease and 13 at RT. Concerning these last ones, KLVDFRELNK, GIPHPAGLK, TVLDVGDAY, NETPGIRYQY, IRYQYNVL and VIYQYMDDL are highly recommended to the production of vaccine prototypes to be applied in Brazil. The HIV- 1 subtype B introduction in Brazil occurred in the beginning of 1970s, through Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul, from where the lineages exponentially spread to Northeastern and Central Brazil. The subtype C, in turn, entered in Paraná, during mid- 1970s, and, briefly after its introduction, started to spread exponentially in the South region. The application of high-resolution phylogenetics, coalescent analysis and phylogeography, allowed an in-depth characterization of the HIV-1 epidemic in Brazil, the reevaluation of hypothesis and the formulation of new insights about the origin and dissemination of subtypes B and C in the country.

▼ Visual recognition memory research has shown conflicting findings when using the standard remember/know procedure (Gardiner, 1988; Tulving, 1985) to examine the impact of emotional valence and arousal items on adult aging and remembering. It has been suggested that the reason for the conflicting findings within visual recognition memory research is that the standard remember/know procedure inaccurately measures the remember and know responses that represent the dual-process theory of recognition memory (Jacoby et al., 1997). However, research from other perspectives such as the socioemotional selectivity theory (Carstensen et al., 2003) and the theory of response bias (e.g. Thapar & Rouder, 2009) has also produced conflicting findings when investigating the impact of visual emotions on adult aging and remembering, indicating that the conflicting findings within visual recognition memory research may not be due to the inaccuracy of the standard remember/know procedure. In addition, there is no evidence to suggest whether these conflicting findings extent to the study of auditory recognition memory also. Therefore, the present study uses the standard remember/know procedure, a modified remember/know procedure (Sheridan & Reingold, 2011), the response bias ‘C’ measure (Ingham, 1970), and visual and auditory self-relevance questionnaires created for the present study based on the notion of the socioemotional selectivity theory were used to investigate whether there is a significant differences between younger, middle aged and older adults visual and auditory recognition memory performance for positive, negative and neutral valence (neutral arousal) words. Based on the results of the remember/know, response bias and self-relevance data, the visual and auditory standard and modified remember/know procedures produced conflicting findings between the three adult age groups and the response bias measure revealed that response bias did not significantly affect remember and know responses. Interestingly, there was no significant difference between visual and auditory recognition memory performance and there were significant self-relevance scores between the three adult age groups. Essentially, researchers need to urgently reconsider the type of remember/know procedure that they use to in future studies to research the impact of emotions on adult aging and remembering.

▼ Mobile forensics triage is a useful technique in a digital forensics investigation for
recovering lost or purposely deleted and hidden files from digital storage. It is particularly
useful, especially when solving a very sensitive crime, for example, kidnapping,
in a timely manner. However, the existing mobile forensics triage tools do not consider
performing a triage examination on damaged mobile phones. This research addressed
the issues of performing triage examination on damaged Android mobile phones and
reduction of false positive result generated by the current mobile forensics triage tools.
Furthermore, the research addressed the issues of ignoring possible evidence residing
in a bad block memory location. In this research a new forensics triage tool called
M_Triage was introduced by extending Decode’s framework to handle data retrieval
challenges on damaged Android mobile phones. The tool was designed to obtain evidence
quickly and accurately (i.e. valid address book, call logs, SMS, images, and,
videos, etc.) on Android damaged mobile phones. The tool was developed using C#,
while back end engines was done using C programming and tested using five data sets.
Based on the computational time processing comparison with Dec0de, Lifter, XRY
and Xaver, the result showed that there was 75% improvement over Dec0de, 36% over
Lifter, 28% over XRY and finally 71% over Xaver. Again, based on the experiment
done on five data sets, M_Triage was capable of carving valid address book, call logs,
SMS, images and videos as compared to Dec0de, Lifter, XRY and Xaver. With the average
improvement of 90% over DEC0DE, 30% over Lifter, 40% over XRY and lastly
61% over Xaver. This shows that M_Triage is a better tool to be used because it saves
time, carve more relevant files and less false positive result are achieved with the tool.

▼ As SQL injection attack (SQLIA) continues to threaten web applications despite
several techniques recommended to prevent it, a Hybrid Threat Modeling strategy
was adopted in this research due to its proactive approach to risk mitigation in web
applications. This involved the combination of 3 threat modeling techniques namely
misuse cases, attack trees and finite state machines in order to harness their individual
strengths to design a Hybrid Threat Modeling framework and tool called MOTH
(Modeling Threats using Hybrid techniques). Using the MOTH tool developed using
Eclipse rich client platform, experimental results with an e-commerce web application
downloaded from GitHub namely BodgeIt store shows an improved SQL injection
vulnerability detection rate of 13.33% in comparison to a commercial tool, IBM
AppScan. Further benchmarking of MOTH with respect to SQL injection vulnerability
detection in both BodgeIT store and IBM’s Altoro Mutual online banking application
shows it is 30.6% more effective over AppScan. Relative to other threat modeling
tools, MOTH was able to realize a 41.7% optimization of attack paths required to
design effective test plans and test cases for the recommendation of efficient security
requirements needed to prevent SQL injection attacks. A 100% risk mitigation
was achieved after applying these recommendations due to a complete security test
coverage of all test cases during the experiment as all test cases successfully exposed
the inherent security mutants in the AUT. These results show that MOTH is a more
suitable hybrid threat modeling tool for preventing poor specifications that expose web
applications to SQL injection attacks.

orang mementingkan materialisme menyebabkan anak-anak mengabaikan
rumah warga tua.

▼ Malnutrition problem is the gravest single threat to the world's public health today.
Statistics have showed that the number of under-nourished and over-nourished children
and adolescents is increasing day by day. Thus, proper menu planning process among
menu planners or caterers is important to avoid some diet-related diseases in the future.
Manual calculation of menu planning is unable to consider macronutrients and
micronutrients simultaneously due to complexities of data and length of time. In this
study, self-adaptive hybrid genetic algorithm (SHGA) approach has been proposed to
solve the menu planning problem for Malaysian boarding school students aged 13 to 18
years old. The objectives of our menu planning model are to optimize the budget
allocation for each student, to take into consideration the caterer's ability, to fulfill the
standard recommended nutrient intake (RNI) and maximize the variety of daily meals.
New local search was adopted in this study, the insertion search with delete-and-create
(ISDC) method, which combined the insertion search (IS) and delete-and-create PC)
local search method. The implementation of IS itself could not guarantee the production
of feasible solutions as it only explores a small neighborhood area. Thus, the ISDC was
utilized to enhance the search towards a large neighborhood area and the results indicated
that the proposed algorithm is able to produce 100% feasible solutions with the best
fitness value. Besides that, implementation of self-adaptive probability for mutation has
significantly minimized computational time taken to generate the good solutions in just
few minutes. Hybridization technique of local search method and self-adaptive strategy
have improved the performance of traditional genetic algorithm through balanced
exploitation and exploration scheme. Finally, the present study has developed a menu
planning prototype for caterers to provide healthy and nutritious daily meals using simple
and friendly user interface.

▼ Background
Suicide and self-harm (SASH) within the prison estate is a prevalent issue. Figures indicate 325 deaths in prison in the 12 months leading to December 2018, of which 92 were self-inflicted, and 52, 814 incidents of self-harm- up a considerable 23% from the previous year.
Explanations to why SASH manifest greater in prison are manifold; prison experiences exacerbate mental health through the deprivation of liberty, goods, heterosexual relationships, autonomy and security. SASH can be considered a coping strategy or (mal)adaption to these deprivations.
As a response to this, the prison service has a SASH training package, delivered annually to frontline staff to aid SASH prevention.
Method
A mixed methods design was used incorporating frequency data from 61 post-training evaluation forms and 7 30-45 minute semi-structured interviews with frontline prison staff. A thematic analysis was used to identify codes from the interview data, and these were contextualised by the post-training evaluation form descriptive analyses.
Findings
Of the 61 post-training evaluation forms, 56 stated the training was highly effective in achieving course aims. However, of those interviewed, it is clear that this effectiveness was in delivery of procedural content only, such as the use of the ACCT. Knowledge and awareness delivery of mental health and SASH was ‘basic’, ‘boring’, and ‘tick box orientated’. Staff feel unsupported in mental health provision and guidance post-training.
Conclusions
Effective training methods embody a level of ‘control’ and input from adult learners and training delegates. Participants want to be active ‘learners’ in SASH, seeking knowledge to support person-centred care of prisoners as well as the ability to follow procedure.
Following this, implications for future SASH practice and policy are highlighted in an applicable model to fit current prison regime and training resources.

▼ This dissertation seeks to discern the impact of social housing on public health in the cities of Glasgow, Scotland and Baltimore, Maryland in the twentieth century. Additionally, this dissertation seeks to compare the impact of social housing policy implementation in both cities, to determine the efficacy of social housing as a tool of public health betterment. This is accomplished through the exposition and evaluation of the housing and health trends of both cities over the course of the latter half of the twentieth century. Both the cities of Glasgow and Baltimore had long struggled with both overcrowded slum districts and relatively unhealthy populations. Early commentators had noticed the connection between insanitary housing and poor health, and sought a solution to both of these problems. Beginning in the 1940s, housing reform advocates (self-dubbed ‘housers') pressed for the development of social housing, or municipally-controlled housing for low-income persons, to alleviate the problems of overcrowded slum dwellings in both cities. The impetus for social housing was twofold: to provide affordable housing to low-income persons and to provide housing that would facilitate healthy lives for tenants. Whether social housing achieved these goals is the crux of this dissertation. In the immediate years following the Second World War, social housing was built en masse in both cities. Social housing provided a reprieve from slum housing for both working-class Glaswegians and Baltimoreans. In Baltimore specifically, social housing provided accommodation for the city’s Black residents, who found it difficult to occupy housing in White neighbourhoods. As the years progressed, social housing developments in both cities faced unexpected problems. In Glasgow, stable tenant flight (including both middle class and skilled artisan workers)+ resulted in a concentration of poverty in the city’s housing schemes, and in Baltimore, a flight of White tenants of all income levels created a new kind of state subsidized segregated housing stock. The implementation of high-rise tower blocks in both cities, once heralded as a symbol of housing modernity, also faced increased scrutiny in the 1960s and 1970s. During the period of 1940-1980, before policy makers in the United States began to eschew social housing for subsidized private housing vouchers and community based housing associations had truly taken off in Britain, public health professionals conducted academic studies of the impact of social housing tenancy on health. Their findings provide the evidence used to assess the second objective of social housing provision, as outlined above. Put simply, while social housing units were undoubtedly better equipped than slum dwellings in both cities, the public health investigations into the impact of rehousing slum dwellers into social housing revealed that social housing was not a panacea for each city’s social and public health problems.

▼ This thesis investigates the views of English social workers and child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) clinicians about how social workers use the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) with looked after children. Focus groups and semi structured interviews (conducted 2011 - 2013) examined social workers’ (n = 58, from nine local authorities) understandings of the mental health needs of looked after children and their use of the SDQ in assessing this, as well as how CAMHS clinicians (n = 24, from 11 Health Trusts) viewed the role of social workers in appropriately assessing mental health problems. Normalisation Process Theory was used to appraise how the SDQ had been routinely operationalised in everyday social work practice. A case study of one local authority explored the working practices of looked after children’s social workers and specialist CAMHS clinicians working in a co-located (high integration) service which had achieved consistently high annual SDQ returns over a number of years.
The study found most social workers were not aware of the SDQ scores of the children or young people they were allocated and did not know how to interpret it in terms of looked after children’s mental health. Routinely collected SDQ data on looked after children who had been in care for a year or longer was not utilised by most of the social workers or the local authorities which collected it. Specialist CAMHS used the SDQ alongside social workers in only two local authorities. Level of integration (based on degree of co-location of social workers and CAMHS) did not appear to be associated with social workers’ SDQ use. Detailed examination of one local authority showed that although it contained a highly integrated service and was the best in the country at getting completed SDQ forms returned from foster carers, having a robust process for data collection was not enough to ensure the SDQ was integrated within social work practice in the organisation.
Given challenges to local authority budgets and services, any recommendations to improve current practice must be mindful of resource implications. Better utilisation could therefore be made of existing local authority processes and resources to embed the SDQ into routine practice. A multi-agency approach remains critical to establish the routinised usage of the SDQ. This has the potential to benefit all agencies and most importantly, looked after children.

▼ Background:
Social mix has become a prominent policy approach in the UK that aims to diversify the socio-economic composition of neighbourhoods in order to provide a host of economic and social benefits to residents. A central outcome that mixing is expected to achieve is the improvement of local services. The rationales for social mix have arisen from evidence around the negative impacts of spatially concentrated disadvantage on residents’ life chances, which have provided incentives for policy to redevelop low-income, single-tenure areas into mixed communities.
Social mix initiatives in the UK and Scotland have most often been carried out by increasing levels of owner-occupation in areas dominated by social rented housing and low income levels. The arguments for mixing can therefore be argued to largely rely on the expected benefits of middle-class home-owners, where three mechanisms are identified. First, the introduction of middle-class households is expected to increase income flows to help sustain services in the local area (economic capital). The second type of influence refers to cultural capital as the tendency of middle classes to be more assertive in their demands and engage with officials to influence service provision, while service providers may also be more receptive to their issues. Thirdly, the presence of middle-class home-owners is assumed to increase levels of social capital through their involvement in the local community, which may encourage residents to collectively influence the provision of local services.
The New Labour government (1997-2010) placed social mix at the core of their neighbourhood renewal agenda which was designed to tackle the social exclusion of disadvantaged neighbourhoods. New Labour’s efforts to reduce the gap in outcomes between deprived and non-deprived areas is said to have represented a holistic approach, which combined targeted neighbourhood programmes and mainstream public service funding to better address problems. A further key focus became partnerships between local agencies, the public and the third sector. The initiatives placed emphasis on social capital as a means for communities to influence service provision, work in partnerships, and improve their outcomes. Social mixing was expected to increase levels of social capital and thereby encourage participation in community organisations to influence service provision. New Labour further addressed services through a public sector reform and increased funding to public services, which might be expected to narrow the gap between deprived and other areas in terms of service outcomes.
The potential impacts of mixing on lower-income communities have however received criticism. It is questioned whether potential income flows from high-income residents support services that are accessed more by low-income residents, while greater cultural and social influence over services can imply that service provision is shaped towards the needs and preferences of middle-class residents.
Local services provide an interesting…

▼ This small scale study examines the perspectives of social workers from adult mental health services and childrens social care on collaboration. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore social workers’ experiences of working with families and professionals both inside and outside their own agencies and their thoughts on the barriers to collaboration, as well as their ideas on how collaboration could be improved. Thematic analysis was used to create a coding process and generate patterns across the data, with perspectives on collaboration being found to be influenced by organisational climate and culture, professional identity and the narratives within each service. A common theme identified by all subjects was that they had a very limited understanding of each other’s service, in terms of skills, roles and procedures and any improvements to their knowledge base in this regard would be welcome. The research found important differences in the perspectives of social workers from each service. Significantly, mental health social workers identified collaboration primarily as a process of co-production with their service users. Children’s social workers, however, saw the primary purpose of collaboration as being to seek out information from other professionals for their assessment work in order for decisions to be made. These perspectives, in turn, fuelled how they viewed each other’s service and promoted narratives that served to divide services rather than encourage collaborative work.
Recommendations include changing narratives and developing relationships across service boundaries for both services. There is also a team in place which has been set up to develop collaborative work by bridging the gap between adult mental health and children’s social care services, and the conclusions and recommendations in this study will be used to influence the direction of their work.

▼ An individual released from prison after a period of time is more likely to experience mental health problems (Bradley, 2009). That individual often faces issues like unemployment and homelessness; drugs and alcohol are then used to overcome problems, leading to re-offence to fund the habit. The criminal justice system and the voluntary sector have always worked together to support ex-offenders on their way towards a successful rehabilitation. This study was designed to conduct a primary qualitative research to investigate charities and explore how they support ex-offenders. It was found that although they both work towards the same objective, the government and the voluntary sector do not share the same opinion on what “success” means. This was understood to be a determinant factor in the way government policies are designed and how charities support their clients. As recommendations, policies on offenders management should be made not only based on cost effective procedures but by considering the needs of the offender. Also, future studies could follow the implementation of the new regulations, and include the service users in the research, in order to explore their perspectives on the services they receive as part of their rehabilitation as well as their mental well-being.

▼ Telecare – the use of technology to facilitate access to health and social care services – has risen in prominence over the last decade in the context of population ageing, a rise in long-term conditions and economic uncertainties. UK policy advocates adoption of telecare at scale, citing the promotion of independence and empowerment as benefits, but local implementation has been variable and the experiences of service users show a nuanced picture.
This thesis investigates telecare policy, and its interpretation and implementation. It draws on an argumentative discourse analysis and material-semiotic approach to understand the experiences of telecare at a case study site. Narrative interviews and observations were undertaken, involving service provider and technology industry stakeholders and service users. Findings reveal four ‘story-lines’ of telecare policy but discrepancies between this discourse and local experiences. People are shown to engage with telecare to different extents, with the prevailing technology ‘script’ influencing non- or mis-use of devices. New work roles created by telecare sometimes appear ‘invisible’ or devalued. Furthermore, there is a lack of meaningful involvement of service users in decision-making. This study adds a theoretically-informed voice to the academic field and makes recommendations for future telecare policy, practice and research.

▼ The focus of this thesis was the study of the policy decision-making process in the healthcare services network in order to understand the behaviour of key actors involved in the UK health network. Additionally, the study examined about the use of the “policy networks” approach, and the application of the Dialectical Relationships Model in the healthcare service networks. A number of factors, internal and external to the network, are interacting and determine policy decisions while in turn influence the process and its outcome.
The research demonstrated that there were formal and non-formal rules within the network and actors interacted according to what was agreed. Actors worked and cooperated in order to produce a favourable outcome, and interacted accordingly in different situations. Another key research finding was shown to be the importance of individuals within organizations and within networks. The network was generally influenced by several factors: past conflicts, asymmetry in resources and power, the socio-economic and political context within which the network operated, governmental intervention were some; they were influencing the operation of the network and the role of actors and of individuals within actors. The application of the Dialectical Model had shown that the Model provided a general framework for studying policy making process.
