An analysis of the position of women in the labour field prior to the Industrial Revolution, indicates the important role she fulfilled and the active participation she had in the economic life of the community. The dual role of caring for the family and economic activity was fused into one and exercised at home. The Industrial Revolution coupled with the technological development of that era resulted in pertinent changes which affected all facets of society. One of the more important changes which greatly influenced female labour proved to be the separation of labour and the family. Although, initially women and children worked in factories, their labour was exploited and in due course a movement was started to phase the women and children out of the factories and to relocate the women and children in the home. As a result of the foregoing, women lost an important part of their participation in economic activities which essentially relocated their activities to that of homemaker and childcare. The women of the middle class developed a sense of futility as a result of inter alia the decrease in the number of children and the development of household appliances, which drastically reduced her home workload and eased her homework. These events resulted in the development of the emancipation movements whereby women again regained amongst others a bigger share in economic activity. Through this movement the women in the first instance succeeded at reinstating the unmarried women into the labour field and thereafter the married women. In the South African context too, the women increasingly entered the labour field. It appears from statistical data that not only is there an increase in the number of women in the labour field but a further increase of married women to the labour field. The married woman who returns to the labour force experiences a number of problems, one of which, is as a result of the addition of a work role to her existing roles. This assumption of the additional role influences her work sphere, the husband-wife relationship, the parent-child relationship as well as external relationships beyond the family core, all which may become problematic and could influence marital integration negatively. Research in other countries indicate that the support which the husband gives to the wife forms an important aspect .of the manner in which the wife deals with the aforementioned problems and which may effect the marital integration. Further studies indicated that a more equalised division of the home workload results in better time management by the wife. As a result of these findings the question arose as to the position in this regard within the Republic of South Africa. The data were gathered by means of a questionnaire, which included biographical information and Likert type questions with the view to measuring work involvement and work satisfaction, marriage integration, time management and support of husband to working wife. The purpose of this research was to compile a psychological information program on stroke, and to provide this psychological information to the spouse of the stroke patient.The emotional status of the spouse of the stroke patient was evaluated during the intervention.The final goal of this research was to give a phenomenological description of the experiences of the spouse of the stroke patient. The method for collecting data was 1) to evaluate the emotional status of the spouse of the stroke patient with the POMS (Profile Of Mood State) inventory before he was exposed to the content of the psychological information program on stroke.2) The spouse of the stroke patient was then introduced to the psychological information program, and any questions which arose were answered. 3) A follow up appointment was arranged for ten days later. During this appointment the POMS inventory was administered again to assess the spouse's emotional status after exposure to the psychological informationprogram on stroke.Any further questions were answered.Within a framework of identified themes a phenomenological description of the experiences of the spouse of the stroke patient was given.The most important experiences were identified as confusion, anxiety, tension, rage, frustration, tiredness, and feelings of not being motivated and depression.The phenomenological themes were "Om-te-wees (Dasein)", "Die wereld", "In-die-wereld-wees", "Om-ingegooi-tewees- in-die-wereld", "Angs as basiese ingesteldheid tot die wereld" and "Liggaamlikheid". The current research was motivated after a thorough study of the literature on stroke.The literature survey revealed a deficiency in terms of availability of information on stroke to the spouse of the stroke patient after the stroke has occured.The literature survey disclosed that the focus of research has been on the stroke patient.Research identified the spouse of the stroke patient as the primary caretaker.Therefore it is important that the spouse of the stroke patient will have access to psychological information on stroke to assist them during their tasks of caretaking. Certain variables influenced theresults of the present research project.These variables were 1) the time when the psychological information was provided to the subjects, 2) the emotional status after the stroke had occurred, and 3) the extent of information the subjects received from other resources. During the current research project the subjects confirmed the value of the availability of psychological information on stroke.The psychological information on stroke is important in assisting the spouse of the stroke patient during their tasks of caret•king.The psychological information on stroke provides the spouse of the stroke patient with 1) a better understanding of the stroke patient, 2) knowledge of what to expect after a stroke had occured, and 3) realistic goals for the future.

▼ In developing countries such as Indonesia, women face many health issues, including cancer. Social, cultural and economic factors are known barriers to women accessing health services and achieving a good health. Studies in Indonesia suggest that husbands’ support may influence women’s health behaviour, including women in breast and cervical screening and treatments. However, little is known in Indonesia about husbands’ roles in women’s health, including illness prevention, early detection, and treatment of women’s cancer. The main objectives of this study were to uncover Muslim husbands’ roles and perspectives regarding women’s health and women’s cancer, and to establish whether there were different perspectives of husbands’ roles related to geographical location, age or other social, health or cultural characteristics. This study used an Islamic ontological approach. The Basic Model of Religiosity and Health, the Health Belief Model, and the Help-Seeking Behaviour and Influencing Factors Framework theories informed data collection. A descriptive exploratory methodology was used. Methods included focus groups with 11 groups (n=73) of married Muslim men, and interviews with married Muslim women (n=20) and health professionals (n=10) from rural and urban areas of West Java province, Indonesia. Data were analysed using two techniques: the Comparative Analysis for Focus Group and the Comparative Analysis for Interviews. The findings revealed that Islamic teaching has an extremely significant position for Muslims husbands in guiding them in their family’s roles. Muslim husbands were very involved in women’s health and cancer. These roles were influenced by internal and external factors. Husbands’ significant roles in women’s health include maintaining women’s health and facilitating health treatments. However, they have a limited role in disease prevention, and early detection of women’s cancer. Muslim husbands’ limited health literacy of women’s cancer was a significant barrier in rural and downtown areas. This study’s findings contribute to a new perspective on religion as a vital influence and driver of health and health behaviour in nursing theory. There is a need for Indonesian nursing practice to incorporate a cultural safety approach to caring for Muslim husbands and wives, and for nurses to ensure men are more fully informed about women’s health. This study identified the need for improvements in health services and a reform of the health system especially in improving husbands’ knowledge and awareness of women’s cancer, and the dissemination of information about women’s cancer services, especially in rural and downtown areas. Additional health education programmes including some that target men’s health literacy are required alongside improvements in health services, especially women’s cancer services. ▼ Physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of men is something that doesn't get talked about very much. What's worse, when it does get talked about, discussion is almost always limited to the abuse that men do to women. A lot of people are very emotionally and politically invested in believing that violence is not something that women do, and when the men who have been victims of women try to speak out they frequently encounter negative reactions ranging from outright denial to actual accusations that it is their own fault that they were abused. It is worse when those reactions come from self-identified feminists who should know better. There is no excuse for any feminist to deny female abusiveness or to attack any man for discussing their experiences of it. This study critically examined female domestic violence against men. This research study was premised on the following research questions: what is the nature of female violence against men, what are the factors that lead to female violence against men, what are the levels of reporting by male victims of female domestic violence and what are the consequences of female violence against men. A descriptive study design was used. Data was collected by using both primary and secondary sources. The primary data were collected by way of interviewing the thirty four (34) respondents using interview guides. The secondary data was collected through reviewing available and relevant literature on female domestic violence against men. Data analysis was done by analysing data thematically. The findings of this research show that female domestic violence against men is in form of physical assault, verbal abuse, sexual violence and psychological abuse. It further revealed the reasons for why female violence against men vary but mostly it is because of men‟s perceived infidelity, infertility, failure to provide for the family, alcohol abuse, children from other marriages and retaliating male dominance. Effects of female violence against men such as physical injury, lack of economic power, isolation, fear, depression, low self-esteem and HIV/AIDS were revealed. This study recommended that Ministry of Gender and Development should educate society about female domestic violence against men. The Police should be serious when handling such cases and not mock male victims.

▼ This thesis investigates how lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer parents interact with media representations. I identify two significant gaps in current scholarship on this topic. One between queer theory and LGBTQ sociology, where claims about the possibility of radical politics are disconnected from studies of everyday life. The other, between media studies and sociology of the family, where the central role of media in constituting identity drops out of discussions about everyday LGBTQ lives. As a result of this mapping of the field I formulated these key research questions: how do LGBTQ parents negotiate media culture? How do LGBTQ parents negotiate visibility and intelligibility for their families and how do they experience media invisibility? And, what conditions of family and what broader social possibilities are generated by the interactions LGBTQ parents have with media? These research questions framed the design of a project in which I conducted semi-structured interviews with thirty LGBTQ parents living in the UK. The thesis takes this primary empirical material together with reference to scholarship on media culture, family formation, and queerness, and posits that media representation is a core constituent of identity formation and central to how we can understand the making and maintenance of LGBTQ-parented families. I examine how ideas about what a ‘normal' or heterosexual family looks like shape the experiences and quest for intelligibility, legitimacy and visibility; how parents conceptualise their families in relation to the possibility of articulating radical identities; and the notion of generational rupture and inheritance as it is managed through media and community. The key findings of this thesis are that LGBTQ parents employ a variety of strategies to tackle media invisibility; LGBTQ parents both conform to, and resist, narratives of family as intrinsically normative; LGBTQ parents negotiate new representations of family and produce new narratives of the meaning of radicalism. Finally, I show that media is central to the identity work of LGBTQ parents, and is strongly implicated in the construction of home and family life. I offer a thesis which contests the meaning of futurity and normativity in queer theory and interjects in the discussion on the cultural formation and meaning of family.

▼ A disjunction exists between theoretical developments that highlight couple-dynamics and the role of men in fertility decision-making, and the single-sex, women-only surveys that are the basis for fertility research. This dissertation focuses on the couple as the reproductive unit and, in doing so, it addresses a persistent problem – the absence of men. Survey data offer a limited view of the fertility decision-making process, therefore extensive qualitative fieldwork and interviewing were done to augment a district-wide survey among wives and husbands (N = 1500 spouses) in rural Nepal. The first indications of fertility decline in the study area, Chitwan District, are a harbinger of social change in less-developed regions of South Asia. Although fertility remains high, profound changes in people's fertility-related attitudes and behaviors were observed. Despite broad-based consensus on the desirability of smaller families, couples were committed to having one, and often two, sons. A test of couples' decision-making priorities demonstrates that son preference often dominates family size considerations. Husbands are even more likely than wives to pursue the birth of sons at the cost of larger families. Qualitative interviews explain son preference, and suggest the existence of a two-son norm. The birth of two sons insures families against son-loss, and promotes the long-term economic and social well-being of households. However, some couples choose to deviate from the two-son norm, in the interest of smaller families. Logistic regression demonstrates the effects of 1, 2 and 3+ sons on the adoption of permanent and temporary contraceptive methods after births during a recent 10-year period. Decisions to adopt temporary methods after one son constitute a replacement strategy, or a sophisticated attempt by couples to preserve their potential to have additional sons, if need be. Permanent methods tend to be adopted after two (or more) sons. A final analysis suggests that couples with an unmet need for family planning are differentiated from current-users by their unwillingness to use temporary methods. Because their use remains at a minimum in Nepal, as in other regions of South Asia where programs have historically emphasized permanent sterilizations, there is considerable scope to temporary methods. ▼ Women’s marital surname change was investigated as a potential marital commitment signal, and strategy for enhancing investment from in-laws and husband. Hyphenating or keeping premarital surname for all U.S. destination brides marrying in Hawai'i in 2010 was significantly correlated with a women’s income measure (r = .78, p < .000) and with the analogous statistic for men (r = .64, p < .000), by bride’s state of residence. The women’s measure, only, remained significant under regression of both predictors. The interaction of state Gini and the women’s income measure in a regression including the interaction components as predictors was positively predictive (adjusted-R2 = .57). None of several other predictors suggested by previous research or related to Gini or income were significant under regression, alongside the women’s income measure. The older the bride, from any jurisdiction, marrying in Hawai'i in 2010, the more likely to hyphenate/keep premarital surname (χ2 (1) for linear trend = 1754.65, p < .000). Among all opposite-sex couples (N = 167 couples) divorcing in a Canadian county in an 8-month period, 2013-2014, marriages the women in which underwent marital surname change lasted 60% longer, controlling for wife’s age at the time of marriage. When the woman’s marital surname change/retention was used as a regression predictor of number of children of the marriage alongside marriage duration in years, only the latter was predictive. Brides-to-be from across especially western and central Canada (N = 184) were surveyed as to marital surname hyphenation/retention versus change (DV 1), and attitude towards such retention in general (DV 2). Among women engaged to men, the hypothesized predictors of income and number of future children desired were positively predictive of marital surname retention/hyphenation under univariate analysis. Under multiple regression analysis using these and other predictors from the literature also found to be predictive of this DV under univariate analysis, only some of these other predictors were predictive. An EFA factor score calculated from several attitude items concerning in-laws, conceptualizable as In-law avoidance motivation, was not predictive of general attitude toward or actual retention/hyphenation, contrary to prediction.

▼ This dissertation is comprised of three essays that explore the intra-household distribution ofassets and wealth in Ecuador. The first essay focuses on gender differences in the likelihood of homeownership as well as the differences in housing wealth. The second essay examines the relationship between the intra-household distribution of assets and wealth and egalitarian decision-making in regards to the decisions about employment and spending one’s own income. Finally, the third essay investigates how farm management decisions are related to asset ownership and wealth. Using the bargaining power framework, we propose that the intra-household distribution of assets and wealth impacts how decisions are made within the household since it gives an indication of the spouses’ relative bargaining positions. If most of the wealth is owned by the husband (wife) then we would expect him (her) to make most of the decisions but a more equal distribution would result in more egalitarian decision-making practices. We use data from the UF-FLACSO 2010 Ecuador Household Asset Survey, a nationally representative survey that collected sex-disaggregated data regarding asset ownership and wealth from 2,892 households. We find that although there are no gender differences in the likelihood of homeownership or in the amount of housing wealth, there are several gender differences in the factors predicting home ownership and housing wealth. In terms of household decision-making, in households in which only women own real estate (compared to those in whichneither husband nor wife own real estate) women are more likely to make autonomous decisions. In households with a fairly equal distribution of wealth and when both spouses own real estate couples are more likely to make egalitarian decisions. Finally, with respect to farm management, the great majority of women land owners are involved in making agricultural decisions; their participation in fieldwork is strongly correlated to their participation in such decision-making. Although the intra-household distribution of wealth is not related toagricultural decision-making among landowning women, women’s ownership of agricultural equipment is associated with women’s participation in agricultural decisions. Overall, these results indicate that the intra-household distribution of asset ownership and wealth are related to how couples make decisions. ▼ It is generally recognized that a serious illness with concurrent hospitalization in an ICU will have an impact on family members. Few researchers, however, have described the ways in which spouses are affected when their mates are hospitalized in an ICU. Therefore, this study aimed to describe and explain the spouses' experiences of having a mate in an ICU following coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Kleinman's conceptual framework guided the development of the research question and provided the focus for data collection and analysis. Kleinman proposes that an understanding of the client's perspective is necessary for the provision of effective health care. A qualitative research method based on the theoretical perspective of phenomenology was used to answer the research question. The spouses' viewpoints were elicited through unstructured interviews. The sample consisted of seven spouses, four women and three men. The spouses were interviewed on two occasions, once while their mate was still in the ICU and once shortly following their mate's discharge from the ICU. A total of 13 in-depth interviews were conducted over a 3 month period. Data were analyzed simultaneously with and following data collection. Responses that were similar were grouped together into categories. After the data were examined and sorted into categories, the researcher defined the theme that dominated each category. The themes that emerged from the data were clarified, validated, and/or rejected by the participants during subsequent interviews. As relationships between the categories were identified, the important aspects of the spouses' experiences became apparent. The findings revealed that the spouses located the ICU experience within the context of their experience with their mate's coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The spouses understood and made sense of the ICU experience by attaching meaning to specific events that related to the entire surgical experience. They perceived the surgical experience as consisting of three distinct but interrelated phases: pre-surgery; waiting during surgery; and post-surgery. During each phase, the spouses described and explained how they reacted to and coped with each new situation. These two themes, "reaction to the situation" and "coping with the situation," appeared as threads throughout the entire surgical experience. By organizing the data in relation to phases and themes, the researcher was able to meaningfully understand and communicate the spouses' entire surgical experience. In view of the study findings, implications for nursing practice, education and research are delineated.

▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of v assertive training on the marital adjustment of tho se participating. It was of particular interest to identify the effects of training wives only as compared to training couples jointly in assertiveness. There were a total of 56 subjects sampled for this study, constituting 28 marriages, all investigated for marital adjustment. All of the subjects were volunteers and were obtained through the Women's Center at Utah State University. The subjects were placed in one of two treatment conditions depending upon the condition for which they volunteered. The wives only treatment condition provided assertiveness training exclusively for the wives of the couples participating. Both husbands and wives received training in the couples treatment condition. All of the 56 subjects, both husbands and wives, completed the Marital-Adjustment Test during the first and last session of assertive training. The assertive training groups met for six weeks for two hours each week. An analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data for the first two hypotheses. The pretest scores for both treatment conditions for husbands and wives were held constant and the posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test were compared for both husbands and wives of the other treatment condition. The f test for significant differences in correlations was used to test the following questions: (a) Is there a difference in the amount of correlation of the pretest scores and the posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test for husbands and wives in the wives only treatment condition? and (b) Is there a difference in the amount of correlation of the pretest scores and the posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test for husbands and wives in the couples treatment condition? It may be concluded that there is no advantage for marital adjustment when husbands and wives are both given assertiveness training as opposed to the wife only receiving training. There was a statistical difference (beyond the .01 level of significance) between the correlations of the pretest and posttest scores for husbands and wives in the wives only treatment condition. No difference in amount of correlation was found between pretest and posttest scores on the Marital-Adjustment Test for husbands and wives in the couples treatment condition. It was concluded that when spouses were trained together, no change in perceptions of marital adjustment occurred. When wives were trained alone, perceptions of marital adjustment between spouses was in greater agreement. ▼ The critical lack of research in the area of in-law relationships leaves interested persons wondering about the nature of such relationships. The purpose of this study was to ascertain how the independent variables of sex, number of children, education and age of the sons or daughters-in-law effected the relationship with the mothers and fathers-in-law. The four directional hypotheses tested were: (1) as the age of the son or daughter-in-law increases, the chances for a more positive relationship with mothers and fathers-in-law and their sons and daughters, increases significantly; (2) females feel significantly closer to their parents-in-law than males; (3) as the number of children in the homes of the sons and daughters-in-law increases, the quality of their relationship increases significantly with their parents-in-law; and (4) the higher the educational level of the sons or daughters-in-law the greater the quality of their relationship with their mother or father in law. A total of 238 persons living in the married student housing responded to the questionnaire. The questions were answered accordi. ng to their current or most recent marriage. The questionnaire asked r espondent s to answer how they f elt towards their parent s -inlaw – fee lings of closeness towards them; titles used to address them; how troublesome they were perceived to be; the type of help received from them; and how their parents-in-l aw compared to other parents-in-law. The following findings were derived from the data using the chi square test, mean scores and F ratios: 1. Respondents 30 years of age and older felt significantly closer emotionally to their parents-in-law than did those 25-29 years of age . 2. Those 30 years of age and older felt their fathers-in-law were less troublesome than those 25-29. 3. Those 30 years of age and older felt emotionally closer to their mothers-in-l aw than those 25-29. 4. Females did feel emotionally closer to their mothers-in-law than males. They also addressed their fathers-in-law in a more positive and personal manner, but when their mean scores and F ratios were analyzed for the problematic and closeness index there were no significant differences. 5. Those with one child felt significantly closer to their mothers-in-law than those with two or more or no children. 6. Those with a high school or less education felt significantly closer to their mothers-in-law than those with some college. ▼ This study explores the limits and potential of flexible working through the lived experience of women in professional and managerial jobs who adjust their employment because of their motherhood. A qualitative, longitudinal research strategy using repeat narrative interviews follows 30 mothers through a year of their lives as they go part-time, job-share, flex their schedules, and work from home. They typify Hakim's (2000; 2006) 'adaptive' category of women, which Lewis and Simpson (2017) argue exemplifies a new 'postfeminist subject' (p128): women required to perform well simultaneously in both work and domestic domains. Anchored theoretically in debates about the relative influence of structure and agency in determining women's employment participation and outcomes. This thesis critiques choice in relation to employment and motherhood. It contributes new explanations why professional women 'choose' different types of flexible working arrangements and how the experience of 'doing' flexible work tallies with expectation. The study finds women's transitions into part-time and flexible work arrangements rarely reflect their ideal preference of job, working hours, schedules or locations. The working arrangement women arrive at is a complex and pragmatic settlement of competing practical and ideological pulls, constraints and incentives. Maternal responsibilities endure, irrespective of women's working hours. Choices are neither clear nor unfettered, and are fraught with anxiety. Five narratives reflect the diverse range of personal intentions behind women's work-life choices made at particular biographical moments in specific social circumstances. The narratives reveal that moves into part-time and flexible work can be tactical, restorative, professionally expansive, are morally potent, socially informed and often a compromise. This study advances understanding of how women working flexibly experience work and are incorporated into organisations. Their lived experience is characterised by trial and error, work intensification, work-life integration, and frequent further adjustments. Most women expected, demanded, and benefited from very little practical involvement of their employers in developing effective job-designs for flexibility. Over time many felt fatigued by their responsibility to manage their arrangements invisibly, minimising inconvenience to others at work and at home. This has implications for flexible working policy and workplace practice. This thesis makes clear that solutions to gender troubles at home and at work are collective and involve politicising the family as well as the workplace in order to achieve genuine choice for women in the occupations they pursue and the success they achieve.

▼ The socio-emotional well-being of maltreated children is a key priority for practitioners and policy-makers alike; yet not enough is known about the developmental mechanisms that might link children's parenting experiences with their psychosocial adjustment. Previous research suggests that parental abuse and neglect can have adverse effects on children's peer relationships and self-perceptions. Emerging theoretical and empirical work suggests that children's social understanding and empathy could play a key role as mediators of these effects, but we have little knowledge about the differentiated pathways that might be uncovered by adopting a multidimensional conceptualisation of parenting experiences, social understanding and empathy, and peer reputations and self-perceptions. This thesis includes five papers reporting on a programme of empirical research conducted in order to address this gap in knowledge. The first, a meta-analysis and systematic review, revealed a complex and differentiated profile of social understanding among maltreated children. The second paper reports on a thematic analysis of a focus group and detailed semi-structured individual interviews with foster carers. In line with our theoretical model, carers readily identified children's difficulties with social understanding and empathy as relevant explanations for their socio-emotional problems. The third paper presents a new multidimensional self-report measure of empathy in children, demonstrating differentiated connections with socio-emotional functioning. The fourth paper presents comparisons between maltreated children in foster care and their classmates at school (aged 7-11 years), using measures that assess their peer reputations, self-perceptions, social understanding and empathy. Results indicate both direct links from maltreatment status to self-perceptions, as well as indirect links via children's theory of mind skills, their prosocial responses to others' emotional states and their behavioural reputations. The final paper delves deeper into the variations within the non-maltreated sample, uncovering links between specific features of the children's parenting experiences and their behavioural reputations, peer status and self-perceptions, via emotion understanding and empathic responses. Overall, the findings from this programme of research highlight the interplay of parenting experiences and socio-emotional competence in understanding school-aged children's psychosocial functioning. The results carry implications for further research as well as for applied work to support maltreated children and the adults who work with and care for them.

▼ This thesis aims to develop understanding of the relative role of mothers and fathers for children's psychopathology, with a primary focus on interparental conflict, maternal and paternal parenting, and the coparenting relationship. This is among the only research to use a multimethod, multi-informant, longitudinal adoption-at-birth design to assess these processes from early-to-middle childhood. The present thesis analyzed data from the Early Growth and Development Study (EGDS; Leve et al., 2007), a US-based study developed to assess family processes and children's development. The adoption-at-birth design allowed examination of environmental processes without the confound of common genes (Jaffee & Price, 2012). The present thesis examined N > 300 intact mothers and fathers and their children from 2.5 years to 6 years using observational and parent-reported data. Study 1 examined whether interparental conflict, maternal depression and paternal depression influenced child internalizing and externalizing problems via mother-child and father-child hostility. Study 2 examined the relative role of mother hostility, father hostility and coparenting as mediators in the relationship between interparental conflict and child internalizing and externalizing problems. Finally, study 3 examined whether distinct maternal and paternal parenting practices (hostility, harsh and inconsistent discipline, positive parenting) differentially mediated the relationship between interparental conflict and child internalizing and externalizing problems, and whether coparenting moderated these relationships. Each study also examined child-evoked effects on parenting and coparenting. Overall, findings showed interparental conflict to be important for child externalizing problems via father-child hostility, maternal and paternal parenting processes to be differentially related to child internalizing and externalizing problems, and early child behavior to evoke different parenting processes. Coparenting was not associated with parenting or child outcomes, nor did it moderate associations, highlighting the need for changes in conceptualization and measurement of the coparenting relationship. Findings are discussed with regards to policy and practice implications.

▼ The special needs domain has long been recognised as problematic and adversarial. Much research has focused on areas of contention, such as the relationships between parents and practitioners, especially in educational settings, or on problems within the structure and operation of the domain. This study adopts a whole system approach in combining discussion of the structural basis of tension within the domain with an investigation of how both parents and practitioners describe, experience and respond to tensions within the special needs domain; such tensions being viewed as facets of the 'struggle' and 'fight' metaphor. Whole systems approaches are derived from the systems discipline, which developed initially out of the nineteenth century interest in organic and engineering systems, but more recently has focused on organisational and inter-organisational arrangements, including the part people play in enabling or disabling such arrangements. It is a strongly interdisciplinary approach more commonly found in organisational studies than in the social sciences more generally. Fifteen practitioners, from health and education settings, and twelve parents of children and young people with diagnoses of high functioning autism spectrum conditions participated in the study. The participants' stories of their experiences of the special needs domain were collected using a narrative inquiry approach. The data was analysed using concepts and theoretical frameworks derived from the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Uri Bronfenbrenner and Charles Wright Mills. An exploration of the influences shaping the special needs domain revealed a number of areas of unresolved tension, some of which result in tensions for those involved in the domain such as can be described as 'fight', and some of which might be addressed by structural changes to the systems comprising the special needs domain such as those envisaged in forthcoming legislation. However importantly the empirical study found that many tensions and struggles experienced by both parents and practitioners did not emanate from the structures of the domain and therefore were unlikely to be amenable to structural changes. Parents 'struggle' to maintain their identity as 'good' parents, to acquire information and to navigate the system in order to access services and resources. Practitioners experience conflict as they seek to access information and training, engage in the complex choreography of cooperating and collaborating in interagency and interprofessional working and endeavour to harmonise their professional practice with agency and public policy priorities. The thesis concludes with a brief discussion of the relationship between whole system approaches and other interdisciplinary approaches to investigating complex problems in the human sciences. It is suggested that systems diagramming techniques such as systems mapping and rich pictures are useful additions to the sociologist's toolkit.
