En dialogue humain-humain et humain-système, le terrain commun (constitué des informations que les locuteurs ont conscience de partager ; Clark & Marshall, 1981) sert de base à la production de références adaptées au partenaire (Isaacs & Clark, 1987 ; Powers et al., 2005). La production des références appartenant au terrain commun dépend de leur accessibilité en mémoire pour chaque partenaire : plus une référence est accessible, plus elle est susceptible d'être produite (Horton & Gerrig, 2005a, 2005b). En ce sens, la production de références appartenant au terrain commun fait l'objet d'un biais égocentrique, étant donné qu'elle reflète principalement l'état mental du partenaire produisant les références (Barr & Keysar, 2002 ; Keysar, 1997). L'objectif de la thèse est de montrer que l'accessibilité en mémoire des références du terrain commun influence non seulement l'adaptation à autrui, mais aussi la réutilisation des références, c'est-à-dire la production de références après leur intégration au terrain commun par les partenaires. Cinq expériences ont été réalisées en vue de caractériser la réutilisation des références en dialogue humain-humain et humain-système. Il s'agit également d'isoler les facteurs linguistiques et non-linguistiques susceptibles d'influencer l'accessibilité en mémoire des références appartenant au terrain commun. Les résultats ont confirmé que la réutilisation pendant le dialogue fait l'objet d'un biais égocentrique. La production par soi et par autrui au moment où les références sont intégrées au terrain commun constitue un déterminant important du niveau d'accessibilité de ces références. Par ailleurs, le niveau d'accessibilité des références varie au long de l'interaction. Sur la base de ces résultats, un nouveau modèle théorique est développé en vue de rendre compte du dialogue de manière dynamique. Les implications pour le dialogue humain-humain et humain-système sont discutées.

In human-human and human-system dialogue, the common ground (which includes the knowledge that the dialogue partners are aware of sharing; Clark & Marshall, 1981) serves as a basis for the production of partner-adapted references (Isaacs & Clark, 1987; Powers et al., 2005). The production of references which belong to the common ground is guided by their accessibility in memory from each speaker's point of view: the more accessible a reference, the more likely it is to be produced (Horton & Gerrig, 2005a, 2005b). In this sense, the production of references which belong to the common ground is subject to an egocentric bias, as it mainly reflects the state of mind of the speaking producing the references (Barr & Keysar, 2002; Keysar, 1997). The purpose of this thesis is to show that the accessibility in memory of the references which belong to the common ground guides not only partner-adaptation, but also reference reuse, that is, reference production after these references have been grounded by the speakers. Cette thèse a pour objectif l’amélioration des capacités communicatives des agents logiciels en interaction avec des humains. Dans ce but, nous proposons une méthodologie basée sur l’étude d’un corpus d’interactions Homme-Homme orientées vers la réalisation d’une tâche. Nous proposons un cadre qui s’appuie sur les jeux de dialogue afin de modéliser des motifs dialogiques observés. Nous illustrons la spécification de tels jeux depuis des motifs extraits en appliquant l'ensemble des étapes de noter méthodologie à un corpus. Les jeux spécifiés sont validés en montrant qu’ils décrivent de façon appropriée les motifs apparaissant dans le corpus de référence. Enfin, nous montrons l’intérêt interprétatif et génératif de notre modèle pour le fondement du comportement communicatif conventionnel d’un agent interagissant avec un humain. Nous implémentons ce modèle dans le module Dogma, exploitable par un agent dans un dialogue impliquant deux interlocuteurs.

This research work aims at improving the communicative behaviour of software agents interacting with humans. To this purpose, we present a data-driven methodology based on the study of a task oriented corpus consisting of Human-Human interactions. We present a framework to specify dialogue games from observed interaction patterns based on the notion of social commitments and conversational gameboard. We exemplify the specification of dialogue games by implementing all the steps of our methodology ona task-oriented corpus. The produced games are validated by showing that they appropriately describe the patterns appearing in a reference corpus. Eventually, we show that an agent can take advantage of our model to regulate its conventional communicative behaviour on both interpretative and generative levels. We implement this model into Dogma, a module that can be used by an agent to manage its communicative behaviour in a two-interlocutor dialogue.

▼ Gender is among the most influential of the factors underlying differences in spatial abilities, human communication and interactions with and through computers. Past research has offered important insights into gender differences in navigation and language use. Yet, given the multidimensionality of these domains, many issues remain contentious while others unexplored. Moreover, having been derived from non-interactive, and often artificial, studies, the generalisability of this research to interactive contexts of use, particularly in the practical domain of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), may be problematic. At the same time, little is known about how gender strategies, behaviours and preferences interact with the features of technology in various domains of HCI, including collaborative systems and systems with natural language interfaces. Targeting these knowledge gaps, the thesis aims to address the central question of how gender differences emerge and operate in spatial navigation dialogues with computer systems. To this end, an empirical study is undertaken, in which, mixed-gender and same-gender pairs communicate to complete an urban navigation task, with one of the participants being under the impression that he/she interacts with a robot. Performance and dialogue data were collected using a custom system that supported synchronous navigation and communication between the user and the robot. Based on this empirical data, the thesis describes the key role of the interaction of gender in navigation performance and communication processes, which outweighed the effect of individual gender, moderating gender differences and reversing predicted patterns of performance and language use. This thesis has produced several contributions; theoretical, methodological and practical. From a theoretical perspective, it offers novel findings in gender differences in navigation and communication. The methodological contribution concerns the successful application of dialogue as a naturalistic, and yet experimentally sound, research paradigm to study gender and spatial language. The practical contributions include concrete design guidelines for natural language systems and implications for the development of gender-neutral interfaces in specific domains of HCI.

Comment l'expérience de la liberté devient-elle sensible? L'expérience esthétique peut-elle nous former à la liberté ? En critiquant les Lumières, et pour en sauver le geste initial, Friedrich Schiller est l'un des premiers penseurs à avertir ses contemporains des contradictions inhérentes à la liberté. Notamment dans les « Lettres sur l'éducation esthétique de l'homme » écrites en 1795, il pointe le danger d'un totalitarisme inhumain, opéré au nom de la Raison. Aux yeux de Schiller, l'aspiration à la liberté est fondée sur l'éducation du sentiment; et réciproquement, la culture du sentiment se fonde sur l'expérience de la liberté, dont l'expression est la beauté. Ce jeu d'aller-retour est un fil conducteur dans la pensée schillérienne et la manifestation typique du rapport entre autonomie et réciprocité. En prêtant attention à la langue de Schiller, il apparaît que le dialogue vivant est à la source de ses théories esthétiques qui privilégient la forme épistolaire. La correspondance entre Schiller et Goethe montre de manière exemplaire comment dans l'amitié chacun se forme au contact de l'autre à travers une poétique du dialogue. L'hypothèse selon laquelle l'adresse est constitutive de la pensée se trouve confirmée dans les lettres Kallias, dont l'objet est la définition du beau ainsi que la valeur de l'œuvre d'art. Par ailleurs, la maturation de l'individu et la question de son rôle au sein de la société se déploient dans le roman d'apprentissage. La visée de ce travail est de restituer la valeur d'une éducation esthétique aujourd'hui, de considérer ses enjeux politiques et sa portée éthique - de réhabiliter, en quelque sorte, le portrait de l'Aufklärer comme type humain.

How does the experience of freedom become sensible? What part does the aesthetic experience play in creating our freedom? By criticizing the Enlightenment, and to save its initial gesture, Friedrich Schiller is one of the first thinkers to warn his contemporaries about the contradictions inherent in freedom. Particularly with his "Letters on the aesthetic education of man", written in 1795, he highlights the danger of an inhumane totalitarianism undertaken on behalf of reason. For Schiller, the aspiration to freedom is based on the education of feeling; and reciprocally, the cultivation of feeling is based on the experience of freedom, that finds its expression in beauty. This interplay is a recurrent theme in Schiller's thought and a typical manifestation of the relation between autonomy and reciprocity. By paying attention to Schiller's language, it seems that lively dialogue is the source of his aesthetic theories that favor the epistolary form. The correspondence between Schiller and Goethe is an exemplary case of friendship that gives birth to each other's autonomy through a poetic of dialogue. In spite of the affirmated universality of Human Rights, the conception, historical development, and its application are presented in a varied way in the context of different civilizations. A comparative analysis among the Occidental, Hindu, Muslim and Chinese civilizations reveals their diversity and the influence of their own conceptions about the human being, social order, Law and Human Rights. The difference of the values is present in the constitutionalism which became part of the history of each civilization, and in the privilege that is given to the social and collective rights or to the individual liberties. The resistance to the universalistic speech of Human Rights also emerges as an aspect of international politics, because the analysis of the Human Rights political dimension in the international Law system and in the States practice reveals civilizational challenges to its implementation, like the opposition to their selectiveness and politicization and the appeal to regional and national particularities and to the numerous religious, cultural, and historical precedents. The challenges to the universality of Human Rights become clearer in the Muslim and Chinese visions, in face of the power exercised by the national governments, which show the necessity to respect diversity, opposing theirselves to a finished model exported by the Occident. On the other hand, in the Hindu India it is perceived that, if in one side has been occurred a process of pacific legislative adequacy to Human Rights, persists a debate about the differentiation of the caste system, that could not be considered a type of racism, according to the countrys manifestations before the U.N. The contrasts create the necessity of the intercivilizational dialogue. The knowledge and recognition of the distinct ways of understanding, as well the attention given to others speech, while different, is fundamental for a dialogue. The solution, therefore, indicates a construction which depends, not only, on the respect to the universality and undissolvibility of Human Rights, as well on the recognition of the differences as a guarantee of this same universality. The dynamic of the paradox guarantees the possibility of the historical construction, observed nowadays not as a finished product of the Occident, but as the result of an open dialogue, that do not promise the consensus, but opens itself to this possibility

A despeito da afirmada universalidade dos direitos humanos, a concepção, desenvolvimento histórico e aplicação dos direitos humanos apresenta-se de forma variada no contexto de civilizações distintas. Uma análise comparativa entre as civilizações ocidental, hinduísta, muçulmana e chinesa revela sua diversidade e a influência de suas concepções próprias sobre ser humano, ordem social, direito e direitos humanos. ▼ O Sentido da Educação em Martin Buber contempla a necessidade de a relação professoraluno na escola atual ir além do campo pedagógico adentrando o campo dialógico, vislumbrando a transformação das salas de aula em pequenas comunidades que ascenderão para uma comunidade maior: a comunidade supra-social. Tal fenômeno poderá ser efetivado por meio do diálogo, que encerra em si os principais elementos do inter-humano: a autenticidade, a presença, a abertura e a conversação genuína. Estes aspectos são constituidores da filosofia dialógica de Buber que trás, em sua essência, uma considerável preocupação com a esfera humana das relações, esfacelada pela coisificação do homem na modernidade. O filósofo do encontro concebe o homem como um ser inerentemente relacional; dentro dessa perspectiva, a atualização da sua existência é efetivada por meio de duas palavras-princípio que traduzem duas formas de o homem se colocar frente ao mundo e frente ao seu semelhante. Na palavra-princípio Eu-Tu o homem entra em relação; na palavra-princípio Eu-Isso ele experimenta o outro ou o mundo em que está. Segundo Buber, não há o predomínio de uma das palavras, visto que ambas são necessárias para a consumação da existência humana. Entretanto, na modernidade, balizada pelo crescente capitalismo industrial, o homem tem objetivado cada vez mais a relações com seu semelhante, ocasionando o distanciamento e a consequente solidão. Para Buber, o homem vivencia um verdadeiro processo de desumanização. Judeu fiel ao hassidismo Martin Buber retira dessa doutrina os elementos para grande parte de suas reflexões. Dessa forma, a relação Eu-Tu é a abertura para a relação com o Tu eterno Deus. De acordo com este pensador a cada orla do Tu o homem vislumbra o Tu eterno. Ideia esta que concebe a existência humana em conexão com o absoluto. Quanto mais o homem se afasta do seu semelhante, mais ele se afasta do Tu eterno, necessitando do reencontro com o outro e, em consequência com o divino, para resgatar sua humanidade. Buber não concebe Deus somente como um princípio nem como uma ideia, mas também como Pessoa que entra numa relação imediata com os homens através de atos criadores, reveladores e libertadores. Assim exposto, na reflexão buberiana a modernidade se caracteriza fundamentalmente, pelo eclipse de Deus, contudo o Tu eterno não desapareceu definitivamente, apenas está oculto em função da objetivação excessiva a que o homem tem sido sucumbido. Na realidade em que se encontra o homem somente poderá ser resgatado por intermédio da conversão, ou por intermédio da formação do caráter. O caráter é o objeto da educação, a função educadora é a formação do caráter e o sentido da educação é a vida na comunidade. Nessa visão, o professor assume um lugar significativamente importante, o de influenciar com sua palavra e com suas ações genuinamente dialógicas, a formação dos caracteres que irão constituir a nova comunidade, cuja finalidade é a verdadeira Vida. ▼ Multimodal dialogue systems integrate advanced (often spoken) language technologies within human-computer interaction methods. Such complex systems cannot be designed without extensive human expertise and systematic design guidelines taking into account the limitations of the underlying technologies. Therefore, this thesis aims at reducing the time and effort needed to build such systems by creating application-independent techniques, tools and algorithms that automate the design process and make it accessible for non-expert application developers. The thesis proposes an interactive system prototyping methodology, which (together with its software implementation) allows for rapid building of multimodal dialogue-based information seeking systems. When designed with our methodology, even partially implemented system prototypes can immediately be tested with users through Wizard of Oz simulations (which are integrated into the methodology) that reveal user behavior and modality use models. Involving users in early development phases increases the chances for the targeted system to be well accepted by end-users. With respect to dialogue system design, we propose a two-layered dialogue model as a variant of the standard frame-based approach. The two layers of the proposed dialogue model correspond to local and global dialogue strategies. One of the important findings of our research is that the two-layered dialogue model is easily extendable to multimodal systems. The methodology is illustrated in full detail through the design and implementation of the Archivus system – a multimodal (mouse, pen, touchscreen, keyboard and voice) interface that allows users to access and search a database of recorded and annotated meetings (the Smart Meeting Room application). The final part of the thesis is dedicated to an overall qualitative evaluation of the Archivus system (user's performance, satisfaction, analysis of encountered problems) and to a quantitative evaluation of all the implemented dialogue strategies. Our methodology is intended (1) for designers of multimodal systems who want to quickly develop a multimodal system in their application domain, (2) for researchers who want to better understand human-machine multimodal interaction through experimenting with working prototypes, (3) for researchers who want to test new modalities within the context of a complete application, and (4) for researchers interested in new approaches to specific issues related to multimodal systems (e.g. the multimodal fusion problem). La généralisation de l’usage des systèmes de dialogue homme-machine accroît la nécessité du développement rapide des différents composants de ces systèmes. Les systèmes de dialogue peuvent être conçus pour différents domaines d’application et dans des langues différentes. La nécessité d’une production rapide pour de nouvelles langues reste un problème ouvert et crucial auquel il est nécessaire d’apporter des solutions efficaces.Nos travaux s’intéressent particulièrement au module de compréhension de la parole et proposent des approches pour la portabilité rapide peu coûteuse de ce module.Les méthodes statistiques ont montré de bonnes performances pour concevoir les modules de compréhension de la parole pour l’étiquetage sémantique de tours de dialogue.Cependant ces méthodes nécessitent de larges corpus pour être apprises. La collecte de ces corpus est aussi coûteuse en temps et en expertise humaine.Dans cette thèse, nous proposons plusieurs approches pour porter un système de compréhension d’une langue vers une autre en utilisant les techniques de la traduction automatique. Les premiers travaux consistent à appliquer la traduction automatique à plusieurs niveaux du processus de portabilité du système de compréhension afin de réduire le coût lié à production de nouvelles données d’apprentissage. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent que l’utilisation de la traduction automatique permet d’obtenir des systèmes performant avec un minimum de contribution humaine.Cette thèse traite donc à la fois de la traduction automatique et de la compréhension de la parole. Nous avons effectué une comparaison approfondie entre les méthodes utilisées pour chacune des tâches et nous avons proposé un décodage conjoint basé sur une méthode discriminante qui à la fois traduit une phrase et lui attribue ses étiquettes sémantiques. Ce décodage est obtenu par une approche à base de graphe qui permet de composer un graphe de traduction avec un graphe de compréhension. Cette représentation peut être généralisée pour permettre des transmissions d’informations riches entre les composants du système de dialogue

The generalisation of human-machine dialogue system increases the need for a rapid development of the various components of these systems. Dialogue systems can be designed for different applications and in different languages. The need for a fast production of systems for new languages is still an open and crucial issue which requires effective solutions. Our work is particularly interested in speech understanding module and propose approaches for language portability of this module. The statistical methods showed good performance to design modules for speech understanding. However, these methods require large corpora to be trained. The collection of these corpora is expensive in time and human expertise. ▼ Maintaining cognitive health is often a pressing concern for aging adults, and given the world's shifting age demographics, it is impractical to assume that older adults will be able to rely on individualized human support for doing so. Recently, interest has turned toward technology as an alternative. Companion robots offer an attractive vehicle for facilitating cognitive exercise, but the language technologies guiding their interactions are still nascent; in elder-focused human-robot systems proposed to date, interactions have been limited to motion or buttons and canned speech. The incapacity of these systems to autonomously participate in conversational discourse limits their ability to engage users at a cognitively meaningful level. I addressed this limitation by developing a platform for human-robot book discussions, designed to promote cognitive exercise by encouraging users to consider the authors' underlying intentions in employing creative metaphors. The choice of book discussions as the backdrop for these conversations has an empirical basis in neuro- and social science research that has found that reading often, even in late adulthood, has been correlated with a decreased likelihood to exhibit symptoms of cognitive decline. The more targeted focus on novel metaphors within those conversations stems from prior work showing that processing novel metaphors is a cognitively challenging task, for young adults and even more so in older adults with and without dementia. A central contribution arising from the work was the creation of the first computational method for modelling metaphor novelty in word pairs. I show that the method outperforms baseline strategies as well as a standard metaphor detection approach, and additionally discover that incorporating a sentence-based classifier as a preliminary filtering step when applying the model to new books results in a better final set of scored word pairs. I trained and evaluated my methods using new, large corpora from two sources, and release those corpora to the research community. In developing the corpora, an additional contribution was the discovery that training a supervised regression model to automatically aggregate the crowdsourced annotations outperformed existing label aggregation strategies. Finally, I show that automatically-generated questions adhering to the Questioning the Author strategy are comparable to human-generated questions in terms of naturalness, sensibility, and question depth; the automatically-generated questions score slightly higher than human-generated questions in terms of clarity. I close by presenting findings from a usability evaluation in which users engaged in thirty-minute book discussions with a robot using the platform, showing that users find the platform to be likeable and engaging. Citizen dialogue has recently become a central development area for municipalities and county councils. Despite changes in the Planning and Building Act and a clear assumption in policy processes to achieve ecological, economic and social sustainability, the citizen dialogue has not been able to fulfill its purpose. The formal process for dialogue has been criticized for being late in the planning process, which reduces the possibility of planning changes. A natural sanction is not least about reduced trust to the planners and the political system. In order to reverse the downward spiral, internal efforts are required in addition to the requirements of current legislation, which is a challenge for not least smaller municipalities. Based on planning theories, relevant previous research and interviews with municipal officials, obstacles and opportunities with citizen dialogue in physical planning in a smaller municipality are investigated. A purpose is also to account for important aspects of the work with citizen dialogue. In addition to an account of how the municipality's work looks, how citizen dialogue can promote municipal physical planning and how a good citizen dialogue can be achieved, the conclusions show that: municipal officials, despite their own ideas about the development of citizen dialogue, are hindered in their work through limited scope for maneuver and limited resources.

För att vända den nedåtgående spiralen krävs interna insatser utöver kraven i gällande lagstiftning, vilket är en utmaning för inte minst mindre kommuner. Utifrån planeringsteorier, relevant tidigare forskning och intervjuer med bland annat kommunala tjänstemän undersöks hinder och möjligheter med medborgardialog i fysisk planering i en mindre kommun. Ett underliggande syfte är också att redogöra för viktiga aspekter i arbetet med medborgardialog.Utöver en redogörelse över hur kommunens arbete ser ut, hur medborgardialog kan främja kommunal fysisk planering och hur en god medborgardialog kan uppnås så visar slutsatserna att: kommunala tjänstemän, trots egna idéer om utvecklingen av medborgardialog, hindras i arbetet genom ett begränsat handlingsutrymme och begränsade resurser.

У овој дисертацији се разматрају изабрани аспекти истраживачког проблема спецификације, дизајнирања и имплементације конверзационих робота као асистивних средстава у терапији деце са церебралном парализом. Доприноси ови тезе су следећи. (i) Предложена је архитектура конверзационог агента опште намене која омогућава флексибилно интегрисање модула различитих функционалности. (ii) Дефинисана је и имплементирана адаптивна бихевиористичка стратегија коју робот примењује у интеракцији са децом. (iii) Предложена дијалошка стратегија је спроведена и позитивно процењена у интеркацији између деце и робота у реалистичном терапеутском контексту. (iv) Коначно, предложен је приступ за аутоматско детектовање критичних промена у дијалогу, заснован на појму нормализоване дијалошке ентропије.

U ovoj disertaciji se razmatraju izabrani aspekti istraživačkog problema specifikacije, dizajniranja i implementacije konverzacionih robota kao asistivnih sredstava u terapiji dece sa cerebralnom paralizom. Doprinosi ovi teze su sledeći. (i) Predložena je arhitektura konverzacionog agenta opšte namene koja omogućava fleksibilno integrisanje modula različitih funkcionalnosti. (ii) Definisana je i implementirana adaptivna bihevioristička strategija koju robot primenjuje u interakciji sa decom. (iii) Predložena dijaloška strategija je sprovedena i pozitivno procenjena u interkaciji između dece i robota u realističnom terapeutskom kontekstu. (iv) Konačno, predložen je pristup za automatsko detektovanje kritičnih promena u dijalogu, zasnovan na pojmu normalizovane dijaloške entropije.

This doctoral dissertation considers selected aspects of the research problem of specification, design, and implementation of conversational robots as assistive tools in therapy for children with cerebral palsy. This dissertation has made the following contributions: (i) It proposes a general architecture for conversational agents that allows for flexible integration of software modules implementing different functionalities. (ii) It introduces and implements an adaptive behavioural strategy that is applied by the robot in interaction with children. (iii) The proposed dialogue strategy is applied and evaluated in interaction between children and the robot MARKO, in realistic therapeutic settings. (iv) Finally, the dissertation proposes an approach to automatic detection of critical changes in human-machine interaction, based on the notion of normalized interactional entropy.

OBJETIVO: Pretendeu-se, primeiramente, realizar uma proposta de ressignificação dos direitos humanos, interpretando a liberdade e a igualdade a partir da filosofia da existência, de uma forma sensível à essência existencial do homem; traduzindo, assim, a liberdade e a igualdade em autenticidade, cuidado e preocupação com o outro. Em um segundo momento, pretendeu-se analisar o papel da literatura enquanto forma de promoção dos direitos humanos, por sua capacidade formadora e de efetivação dos direitos humanos, permitindo a experiência da liberdade, da autenticidade e do reconhecimento na vida de cada um. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Trata-se de trabalho teórico em sentido estrito. O material corresponde a toda a bibliografia que foi percorrida utilizando-se primordialmente o método hermenêutico. Não se pretendeu exaurir o exame da bibliografia de algum autor específico, mas sim se buscou realizar uma abordagem seletiva dos autores e obras, na medida de sua contribuição para o tema e visão propostos. O tema proposto suscita uma abordagem interdisciplinar que muitas vezes encontra-se no limite entre os direitos humanos, a filosofia e a literatura. Por esse motivo, foi necessário percorrer a bibliografia de forma a propiciar uma conexão harmoniosa das idéias trazidas pelos textos, conexão esta que só é possível a partir de uma abordagem dialógica e criativa. Por conta disso, textos teóricos e literários puderam dialogar e se validarem mutuamente. CONCLUSÕES: Conclui-se que a literatura atua por meio de seu modo de ser como um acontecimento e uma experiência que se incorpora na existência dos escritores e leitores como forma: (i) de entendimento do mundo e formação da personalidade autêntica, bem como da ética humana; (ii) de discurso e de diálogo com o outro e com a tradição, através da fusão de horizontes e do compartilhamento de visões de mundo. Deste modo, a literatura possui um papel formador da personalidade, da ética e do modo de ser dos indivíduos muito importantes para que estes sejam capazes de estar no mundo e compartilhá-lo de um modo autêntico, a partir de uma compreensão e apreensão dos direitos humanos que faça sentido em sua existência

▼ Human-human communication is a coordinated dance (Clark, 1996) that requires each participant to consider the other participants. The majority of this coordination centers on the conversational grounding process that develops and maintains the common ground, or shared understanding between the individuals (Clark and Schaefer, 1989). Conversational grounding is also a crucial process for human-computer interaction using language-based methods, such as spoken dialogue systems. Previous work has tied grounding processes to the performance outcomes in collaborative tasks (Reitter and Moore, 2014; Gergle et al., 2013, 2004; Clark and Krych, 2004), making it a high priority for increasing capabilities of spoken dialogue systems. The model of grounding for human-computer interaction should be informed by human-human dialogue. However, the processes involved in human-human grounding are under dispute within the research community. Three models have been proposed: alignment, a simple model that has been influential on dialogue system development, interpersonal synergy, an automatic coordination emerging from interaction, and audience design, a strategic interaction based on intentional coordination. Interpersonal synergy and audience design are two different types of coordination models.Previously, only one study has tested both the alignment and coordination models simultaneously. Fusaroli and Tylén (2016) introduced communication models based on recurrence quantification analysis to model the amount of repetition between speakers. The current research extended their models to differentiate between the types of coordination. Throughout, the current research applied Fusaroli and Tylén’s methods to richer stimuli/tasks that generate longer dialogues with larger vocabulary and more influences on performance outcomes. Through analysis of four different dialogue tasks, the current work also examined how common ground processes change as a function of the task characteristics. Subsequent analyses investigated the validity of the nascent recurrence models.The results showed strong support for the coordination model over the alignment model in human-human communication, Additional results suggested that coordination is the audience design variant. Background: The changed attitudes about the role of business in today's contemporary society alongside with globalization and the evolved media-information environment has enlarged the pressures on businesses in regards to how they should pursue profitability, while responding to demands about accountability that is motivated beyond financial gain. There is a need for a better understanding about communication choices and how these are perceived by intended stakeholders, in order to accelerate effective communication that initiates stakeholder engagement. Research Questions:(1)How is Volkswagens communication design constructed in creating dialogue and engagement after a corporate scandal with its customers? (2)How does Swedish Volkswagen customers, in attribute of being external stakeholders, perceive the opportunities for engagement based on the four selected Volkswagen tools? What challenges does Volkswagen encounter when trying to create dialogue through these tools? Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Volkswagen is creating opportunities for stakeholder dialogue and engagement through the theoretical perspective of communication design. By engagement we mean one-way or two-way communication, where stakeholders seek out or take part of communicative messages provided by the organisation.The study aims to examine how Volkswagen has designed their communication efforts, after being subjected to a global corporate scandal which proposed public demands for accountability and responsibility. Theoretical Framework: The framework consists of Communication theories, giving considerable space to literature from theorists Aakhus and Bzdak whom developed the framework for communication design used in this study. Additionally, the framework includes a smaller selection of CSR, Public Relation, and Media research focusing on stakeholder engagement. Method: We have taken two parallel methodological pathways. The first method involved applying for elements provided by Aakhus and Bzdak framework for reconstructive design, while doing a thematic analysis on the media texts provided by the tools. The second research question was examined by conducting semi-structured interviews with Swedish Volkswagen stakeholders in order to gain a deeper understanding if Volkswagens communicative instruments were enabling engagement. ▼ The meaning of spatial words can only be evaluated by establishing a reference to the properties of the environment in which the word is used. For example, in order to evaluate what is to the left of something or how fast is fast in a given context, we need to evaluate properties such as the position of objects in the scene, their typical function and behaviour, the size of the scene and the perspective from which the scene is viewed. Rather than encoding the semantic rules that define spatial expressions by hand, we developed a system where such rules are learned from descriptions produced by human commentators and information that a mobile robot has about itself and its environment. We concentrate on two scenarios and words that are used in them. In the first scenario, the robot is moving in an enclosed space and the descriptions refer to its motion ('You're going forward slowly' and 'Now you're turning right'). In the second scenario, the robot is static in an enclosed space which contains real-size objects such as desks, chairs and walls. Here we are primarily interested in prepositional phrases that describe relationships between objects ('The chair is to the left of you' and 'The table is further away than the chair'). The perspective can be varied by changing the location of the robot. Following the learning stage, which is performed offline, the system is able to use this domain specific knowledge to generate new descriptions in new environments or to 'understand' these expressions by providing feedback to the user, either linguistically or by performing motion actions. If a robot can be taught to 'understand' and use such expressions in a manner that would seem natural to a human observer, then we can be reasonably sure that we have captured at least something important about their semantics. Two kinds of evaluation were performed. First, the performance of machine learning classifiers was evaluated on independent test sets using 10-fold cross-validation. A comparison of classifier performance (in regard to their accuracy, the Kappa coefficient (κ), ROC and Precision-Recall graphs) is made between (a) the machine learning algorithms used to build them, (b) conditions under which the learning datasets were created and (c) the method by which data was structured into examples or instances for learning. Second, with some additional knowledge required to build a simple dialogue interface, the classifiers were tested live against human evaluators in a new environment. The results show that the system is able to learn semantics of spatial expressions from low level robotic data. For example, a group of human evaluators judged that the live system generated a correct description of motion in 93.47% of cases (the figure is averaged over four categories) and that it generated the correct description of object relation in 59.28% of cases.
