▼ Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is an extremely popular class of algorithms for
computing summaries of posterior distributions. One problem for MCMC in the so-called Big Data regime is the growing computational cost of most MCMC algorithms. Most popular and basic MCMC algorithms, like Metropolis-Hastings algorithm (MH) and Gibbs algorithm, have to take the full data set into account in every iteration. In Big Data case, it is a fact that datasets of more than 100 GB are now fairly common. The running time of standard MCMC on such large datasets is prohibitively long.
To solve this problem, some papers develop algorithms that use only a subset of the data at each step to obtain an approximate or exact posterior distribution. Korattikara et al (2013) merely estimates the transition probabilities of a typical MH chain using a subset of the data at each step of the chain, with some controllable error. The FireFly Monte Carlo (FLYMC) algorithm, presented by Maclaurin and Adams, augments the original dataset and only explicitly evaluates an “active" subset in each step. They show that the marginal distribution of the FLYMC algorithm at stationarity in fact still equal to the posterior distribution of interest. However, Both of the above two papers and other literature in this thesis are restrained to a special kind of posteriors with "product-form" likelihoods. Such posteriors require all data points are conditionally independent and under the same likelihood.
However, what problem we want to solve is targeting a uniform distribution on a convex hull. In this case, \product-form" is not applicable. The reason why we focus on this problem is in statistics we sometimes face the problem to compute the volume of distributions which have a convex hull shape or their shape is able to transformed into a convex hull. It is impossible to compute via decomposing and reducing convex hulls of high dimension. According to Barany et al in 1987, the ratio of the estimated upper and lower bound of the volume of a certain convex hull is quite big. It is not possible to estimate the volume well, either. Fast-mixing Markov chains are basically the only way to actually do volume computations.
The initial work in this thesis is to de ne a data-augmentation algorithm along the lines of FLYMC. We also introduce an auxiliary random variable to mark subsets. However, as our situation is more complicated, we also have one more variable to help selecting subsets than FLYMC algorithm. For the extra variable, we utilize pseudo-marginal algorithm (PMMH), which allows us to replace interest parameter's distribution conditional on augmented variable by an estimator. Although our algorithm is not a standard case because our estimator is biased, bounds of the individual approximating measure of the parameter of interest is able to be directly translated into bounds of the error in the stationary measure of the algorithm.
After fi nishing an implementable algorithm, we then use two tricks including Locality
Sensitive Hash function (LSH)…

▼ Vessel biofouling is a well recognised modern-day pathway for the transfer of nonindigenous
species (NIS). However despite awareness of these risks, marine incursions
as a result of vessel biofouling continue to occur at a growing rate. The objective of this
thesis is to provide underpinning knowledge to improve pre- and post-border
management strategies for vessel biofouling. Chapter 2 provides a baseline assessment
of the biofouling extent and assemblage composition on slow-moving vessels arriving at
New Zealand's border. Slow-movers were targeted because their operational profile is
widely considered to favour the accumulation of extensive biofouling communities (i.e.,
potentially high risk vectors of NIS). Interestingly, this research revealed low fouling
levels and a low incidence of NIS. Highest levels of fouling were observed in areas
where antifouling paint condition was poor or absent (e.g., dry-docking support strips
and niche areas), which is consistent with recent studies of biofouling on other vessel
types. Despite these findings, there have been several documented examples where
heavily fouled slow movers have had high risk NIS on them. As such, risk profiling of
slow-moving vessels is recommended. This should be based on operational
characteristics such as maintenance history, exposure to regions where pest species are
known to be present and intended vessel movements in the recipient region, and should
ideally be undertaken on a case-by-case basis prior to arrival from international or
distant source-regions.
There are limited biofouling risk mitigation options available upon the discovery of NIS
at the border, particularly for large vessels (e.g., barges) or towed structures (e.g., oil
rigs) where removal to land is often not feasible and in-water defouling may be the only
option available. Chapter 3 provides a conceptual framework that identifies biosecurity
benefits and risks posed by in-water defouling. Among the latter are the survivorship of
defouled material, the release of viable propagules via spawning, and enhanced
colonisation of recently defouled surfaces by high risk NIS. Chapter 4 then assesses the
operational performance of two diver-operated defouling tools (rotating brush devices)
that were designed to retain defouled material during operation (i.e., mitigating one of
the main risks associated with in-water defouling identified in Chapter 3). These
devices proved effective in removing low-to-moderate levels of fouling from flat and
curved experimental surfaces. However, performance was generally poorer at removing
more advanced levels of fouling. Furthermore, neither system was capable of retaining
all material defouled; c. 4% was lost to the environment, of which around 20% was
viable. A significant component of material lost comprised fragmented colonial
organisms (e.g., the ascidian Diplosoma sp.), which are theoretically capable of forming
new colonies from fragments. The study also concluded that the defouling brush
devices were not suitable for treating niche areas of vessel…

▼ The purpose of this research was to investigate the parameters that influence the structural behaviour of a specific suspension bridge, The Humber Bridge. Three finite element computer models of increasing complexity were created for the analyses. They were validated against field measurements for both static and dynamic loading, and good correlation was obtained. The programs were used to a) Assess the integrity of the bridge as a whole were three failures of certain individual elements, such as a hanger falling under vehicle impact; b) Determine the influence of the sizing of individual components, such as deck plate thickness or main cable diameter, on overall behaviour; c) ascertain the capability of the structure to cope with loading (traffic, wind orthermal), above the original design values; and d) consider the performance of the bridge had other configurations of hangers been adopted in the original design. From the results of this work, recommendations are made which could influence the future design of long-span suspension bridges.

▼ This project aims to develop and validate the Heston-Hull-White model on Variable Annuities. Such a stochastic modelling assumption is crucial in pricing and hedging the long term exotic options. We calibrate the Equity and FX Heston-Hull-White model in the corresponding markets. A novel numerical integration option pricing method-COS method significantly improve this calibration process. From the conditioned calibration, large amounts of scenarios of 6 stock indices and 3 exchange rates are generated based on this hybrid model using Monte Carlo simulations. Finally we compare the Heston-Hull-White model with the Black Scholes model in the scenario-based valuation of the Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefits to see the impact of the stochastic model.

▼ The paper presents the first series of results obtained in an ongoing validation and verification study of inter-dynamic OpenFOAM solver framework on a new set of high quality experimental tests performed on a large (2.4m long) generic planing
hull model (GPPH) with high deadrise (18deg), from the pre-planning (Fn∇=2.6) to fully planing (Fn∇=5.7) regimes. This test case is a good benchmark for the free surface capturing model implemented in OpenFOAM which is based on a rather simple transport equation for an additional scalar field that defines the fraction of water in each cell of the computational mesh. This model, in spite of its simplicity, seems capable of reproducing complex violent free surface flows such as that observed in planing hulls, that includes jet spray forming on the bottom and detaching from the chine of the planing
hull and overturning waves off the wet chine region, with some nuances. The dependence of the flow solution on the mesh quality is presented and discussed. Practical indication of the level of uncertainty of CFD models for the prediction of the calm water hydrodynamics of the GPPH is given at the highest simulated speed using both fixed and free attitude simulation solutions. Predictions are then extended to the whole speed range, including resistance components, dynamic trim, heave, wetted chine length, and wetted keel length. The effect due to algorithms is also discussed by modifying the settings in wall functions and solvers for the improvements of future simulation.

▼ This thesis captures the calibration of a FX hybrid model: The FX Black-Scholes Hull-White model. The main focus is on the calibration of the parameters in the Hull-White process: The mean reversion and the volatility parameter. The latter is commonly calibrated as a time-dependent parameter, whilst the mean reversion parameter is not. This thesis covers the calibration of the mean reversion as a time-dependent parameter. A known method from the Literature is researched, where we calibrate the mean reversion independently from the volatility parameter to the ratio of two swaptions with the same expiry but different tenor. In our research this method is extended to the negative interest rate environment by assuming that the swap rate follows a shifted lognormal distribution instead of a lognormal distribution. We show that a specific set of swaptions can be chosen, so that the calibration problem is simplified. This choice leads to sequential calibration of convex optimization problems. Numerical results of calibration to artificial and market data are presented, where we compare our method to picking the mean reversion parameter arbitrarily. The findings suggest that the choice of mean reversion parameter affects the calibration procedure. Therefore, we argue that a calibration method for the mean reversion would be appropriate. Besides the focus on the Hull-White process, the calibration of the volatility parameter in the FX Black-Scholes process of the hybrid model is investigated. For the calibration of the FX volatility parameter ATM options on FX rates are used. Numerical results of calibration to artificial and market data are shown. A typical problem of calibration in the industry is discussed: Precision for late maturities. The results in this thesis suggest that this problem could be solved. For research on homogeneity constraints on the time-dependent parameters, the performance of delta-hedging is investigated. The delta-hedging is performed in a simple Black-Scholes world with time-dependent volatility. We show that given a fixed amount hedges beforehand and interest rate zero, there exists an optimal distribution of time points that will lead to equal variance on the profit and loss for every volatility function that has equal implied volatility from t0 to maturity T. Using this strategy, the homogeneity of the volatility parameter has no impact on the performance of delta-hedging. Therefore, in this thesis no homogeneity constraints are used for the calibration of the time-dependent parameters.

▼ Probabilistic classification is an attempt to categorize observations into distinct groups, or classes. The primary goal of classification is to find a method that has the lowest possible misclassification probability, i.e., rate of incorrect categorization. In practice, the situation is often complicated when data are missing. This research focuses on classifier selection when there are missing covariates in the data and observation being classified.
One of the most widely used nonparametric classification rules is the kernel rule. Here, methods are proposed of selecting smoothing parameters for kernel classifiers in the presence of missing covariates. Exponential performance bounds will be derived for the resulting classifiers. Such bounds, in conjunction with the Borel-Cantelli lemma, provide various strong consistency results.
Next, the form of the optimal classifier is derived when observations are uniformly distributed over convex sets. Given a set of data, the convex
hull of the observations is shown to be a consistent estimator of the convex set in question. When data are missing, however, the form of the optimal classifier changes. The corresponding rule is derived in this setup, and suitable plug in rules are proposed.

▼ Geometric techniques are frequently utilized to analyze and reason about multi-dimensional data. When confronted with large quantities of such data, simplifying geometric statistics or summaries are often a necessary first step. In this thesis, we make contributions to two such fundamental concepts of computational geometry: Klee's Measure and Convex Hulls. The former is concerned with computing the total volume occupied by a set of overlapping rectangular boxes in d-dimensional space, while the latter is concerned with identifying extreme vertices in a multi-dimensional set of points. Both problems are frequently used to analyze optimal solutions to multi-objective optimization problems: a variant of Klee's problem called the Hypervolume Indicator gives a quantitative measure for the quality of a discrete Pareto Optimal set, while the Convex Hull represents the subset of solutions that are optimal with respect to at least one linear optimization function. In the first part of the thesis, we investigate several practical and natural variations of Klee's Measure Problem. We develop a specialized algorithm for a specific case of Klee's problem called the “grounded” case, which also solves the Hypervolume Indicator problem faster than any earlier solution for certain dimensions. Next, we extend Klee's problem to an uncertainty setting where the existence of the input boxes are defined probabilistically, and study computing the expectation of the volume. Additionally, we develop efficient algorithms for a discrete version of the problem, where the volume of a box is redefined to be the cardinality of its overlap with a given point set.The second part of the thesis investigates the convex hull problem on uncertain input. To this extent, we examine two probabilistic uncertainty models for point sets. The first model incorporates uncertainty in the existence of the input points. The second model extends the first one by incorporating locational uncertainty. For both models, we study the problem of computing the probability that a given point is contained in the convex hull of the uncertain points. We also consider the problem of finding the most likely convex hull, i.e., the mode of the convex hull random variable.

▼ The straight line calm water performance of stepped planing hulls has been studied experimentally, by prediction method, and numerically. A model test was conducted to provide a systematic understanding of the effects that displacement and step location have on the performance of a stepped planing
hull. Ten different step configurations were tested at three different displacements and over a range of four different speeds in calm water. Seven of these configurations were tested at two different Longitudinal Center of Gravity (LCG) locations. Of all the configurations tested, the stepped
hull configurations showed reduced resistance compared to the unstepped
hull. The configurations with the largest step height aft showed the least amount of resistance over the speed range tested. Increasing displacement and shifting LCG had similar effects on craft performance for both stepped and unstepped hulls. The current stepped
hull prediction method was expanded to include a three dimension wave profile and the ability for the stagnation line to cross the step. Using previous model test data and existing two dimension wave profile equations, a single equation was developed to predict the three dimension wave profile aft of a step. Formulations were added to Savitsky's planing prediction method to include very high speed craft and chines dry conditions. Lastly, two simulations were performed using two computational fluid dynamics numerical tools, OpenFOAM, and NFA. The results of these simulations were compared to the experimental test results to assess each code's relative strengths and weaknesses for use in detail design of stepped planing craft.

▼ The goal of this research is to reduce the computational cost of a fully unsteady RANS simulation for the multibody interaction problems in the ship propulsion system. To achieve this, the boundary element method (BEM) can be coupled with a RANS solver. The rapid-changing propeller-induced flow is first decoupled from the slow-changing or steady total flow. While RANS can be used to calculate the total flow, BEM is applied to the propeller-induced flow. By representing the propeller blades by a body force field and a mass source field, it becomes possible for RANS to use a larger time step size (or even run as a steady problem) and a smaller number of cells. The use of BEM to handle the propeller-induced flow improves the numerical efficiency and also provides a framework for sheet cavitation predictions.
Depending on the level of simplifications, the coupled BEM/RANS scheme can be implemented by three different approaches: the unsteady approach, the time-averaged non-axisymmetric approach, and the time-averaged axisymmetric approach. All of the three approaches are described in this dissertation, as well as some numerical studies on different body force distribution models, mass source models, effective wake calculation models, etc. Then, the scheme is validated by several simple cases in which the propeller’s interaction with upstream bodies is not considered. Finally, the scheme is applied to a
hull-propeller-rudder interaction problem and a contra-rotating propeller problem.

▼ As the only true covert naval option, Submarines are in constant demand around the world. Reducing the structure borne noise from the
hull is one of the highest priorities associated with Submarine design. The major sources of underwater noise from maritime vessels include onboard machinery, wake from the propeller, flow of fluid over the
hull and excitation of the global
hull resonances. At low frequencies, rotation of the propeller results in discrete tones at the blade passing frequency and its harmonics. The fluctuating forces at the propeller are transmitted through the propulsion system, resulting in excitation of the low frequency
hull vibrational modes, which in turn results in a high level of structure-borne radiated noise. In this thesis, the low frequency vibro-acoustic responses from a submerged
hull are determined and then attenuated using control strategies. Analytical and computational models of the submarine are created, allowing the structural responses of the
hull and the far field acoustic responses to be obtained. The submarine
hull is represented by a thin walled cylindrical shell, with additional complicating effects including ring-stiffeners, bulkheads, external fluid loading and ballast tanks. Novel control methods are utilised to attenuate the structural response of the submerged
hull. Passive tuned vibration absorbers, active vibration control, hybrid vibration absorbers and compliant coatings are used to attenuate the breathing and higher order modes of the submerged
hull. Attenuation of the higher order
hull modes by active and hybrid means has rarely been examined. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the use of compliant coatings in conjunction with active or hybrid technologies has never been investigated. This thesis fills these gaps in the research. The highest level of attenuation is achieved from the use of the hybrid and coating technologies. The hybrid vibration absorbers provide greater attenuation than the passive control with a lower control force requirement than the active treatment. The acoustic coatings provide significant attenuation at the anti resonances. This thesis shows that passive, active, hybrid and coating treatments reduce the structural and acoustic responses of the submerged
hull.

▼ The thesis proposes a methodology for a Surrogate Based Optimisation (SBO) study and its application in the Naval Architecture field using the open-source software DAKOTA. Surrogate Based Optimisation is a useful and powerful way of reducing time and costs in hull shape optimisation. It allows the employ of exploratory data analysis techniques and machine learning methods to get more insight, discover hidden patterns, and detect anomalies in the design space. However, an SBO consists of several interconnected steps, and each increases complexity and uncertainty to the overall process. The main goal is the investigation of the effects of different surrogate models on ship geometry optimisation from a resistance point of view. Also, different sampling plans, infill techniques, and optimisation algorithms are analysed and compared, as elemental steps for an SBO. This is done by the use of test functions that emulate the problem of ship optimisation. Furthermore, the intent is to try and list general guidelines to follow when building up an SBO routine with CFD simulations involved, with a focus in the marine field. This research led to the assembly of Halton sampling sequence, Kriging meta-model, Expected Improvement function, Genetic Algorithms, and Pattern Search tools to implement a working SBO routine. This routine is used to demonstrate the success of the SBO method for a Hull Vane and an aft ship optimisations. Moreover, it is used to validate the research outcomes of this thesis and to prove that this work can be safely used for every-day commercial work. The two design applications provided a resistance reduction, with respect to a benchmark hull, of about 19% and 7%. Thus not only they were successful, but also they were excellent examples to show how a surrogate model and its correct visualisation can give the Naval Architect the right tools to critically analyse the results, gain more understanding on the problem, spot and correct anomalies, and provide creative solutions to a client.

▼ Mestrado em Engenharia do Ambiente - Instituto Superior de Agronomia
The objective of this master thesis was to evaluate the effect of biochar on CO2 emissions from agricultural soil. The biochars were produced from three different feedstocks (clean pine chips, peanut hull and poultry manure) and at two different slow pyrolysis temperatures (400 ºC and 500 ºC).
Biochar properties were significantly influenced by the feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. The biochar yield was higher at lower pyrolysis temperature.
In general, biochar produced from woody plants had higher carbon (C) content, low nitrogen (N) content and low cation exchange capacity (CEC). Biochar produced from manure has low C content, high N content and CEC. The pH of these biochars ranged from neutral to alkaline.
To examine the effects of biochar on soil GHG production, an incubation experiment was performed. The emissions of CO2 in soils with biochar were evaluated through C mineralization. The biochar produced at 400 ºC by using peanut hull and poultry manure had a higher CO2 emission compared to that obtained at 500 ºC from raw materials.
The C mineralization was strongly controlled by the pyrolysis temperature than by the feedstock type.

tanto no meio científico quanto no comercial.

During the manufacturing of submarine pressure hull are often applied processes like cold forming and welding. Those processes lead to permanent plastic deformations which are associated with residual stresses. The presence of residual stresses is equivalent to the introduction of an initial pre-load in the structure, which accelerates the plastification process, decreasing hull pressure resistance. To quantify this reduction, a case study that considers residual stresses due to cold forming on hull and flange plates has been performed. The study encompasses hull diameters of 6, 8 and 10 m, made of HY100 steel. A nonlinear model has been done, considering material and geometric non-linearity. Complementarily, the influence of experimental residual stresses profiles on the reduction of collapse pressure of the Spanish S-80 submarine has been studied. These profiles consider the simultaneous presence of residual stresses due to cold forming and welding. In all studied models, the residual stresses have been introduced in the numerical models through INISTATE Ansys software command. This command has been validated using three reference models available in open source literature. In the end, it has been…

▼ Canada is one of the largest barley producers,
generating barley hull which accounts for 10-13% wt of the grain.
Barley hull has valuable components, such as carbohydrates and
phenolics. This thesis studied the extraction of total
carbohydrates and phenolics from the hull of a new barley variety
(BT 584) using solid-liquid batch (SLB), subcritical fluid (sCF)
and supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) extraction methods. The optimization
of the variables was performed using response surface methodology
(RSM) with a central composite design. The sCF extraction was the
most effective method, yielding 122.4 mg of total phenolics/g of
barley hull and 589.4 mg of total carbohydrates/g of barley hull at
240°C, 15MPa, with 12% ethanol concentration, flowing at 5 mL/min.
A kinetic model was used to fit the curves of the sCF extraction
with mean square error lower than 0.06.

The modules may reach 2,000t (dry) and more than 3,000t on operation, being supported by four points on structures called stools. In the P-53 design, there are two sliding stools (that allow longitudinal displacements, parallel to vessel axis), and two fixed stools (that restrict the displacement in all directions), each pair is at different transversal frames on the hull. In theory, the sliding stools are employed to avoid that the hull deflections induce deformation on the module’s structures. The doubts about the efficiency of this…

▼ The need for designing lighter and more compact systems often leaves limited space for planning routes for the connectors that enable interactions among the system’s components. Finding optimal routes for these connectors in a densely populated environment left behind at the detail design stage has been a challenging problem for decades.
A variety of deterministic as well as heuristic methods has been developed to address different instances of this problem. While the focus of the deterministic methods is primarily on the optimality of the final solution, the heuristics offer acceptable solutions, especially for such problems, in a reasonable amount of time without guaranteeing to find optimal solutions. This study is an attempt to furthering the efforts in deterministic optimization methods to tackle the routing problem in two and three dimensions by focusing on the optimality of final solutions.
The objective of this research is twofold. First, a mathematical framework is proposed for the optimization of the layout of wiring connectors in planar cluttered environments. The problem looks at finding the optimal tree network that spans multiple components to be connected with the aim of minimizing the overall length of the connectors while maximizing their common length (for maintainability and traceability of connectors). The optimization problem is formulated as a bi-objective problem and two solution methods are proposed: (1) to solve for the optimal locations of a known number of breakouts (where the connectors branch out) using mixed-binary optimization and visibility notion and (2) to find the minimum length tree that spans multiple components of the system and generates the optimal layout using the previously-developed convex
hull based routing. The computational performance of these methods in solving a variety of problems is further evaluated.
Second, the problem of finding the shortest route connecting two given nodes in a 3D cluttered environment is considered and addressed through deterministically generating a graphical representation of the collision-free space and searching for the shortest path on the found graph. The method is tested on sample workspaces with scattered convex polyhedra and its computational performance is evaluated. The work demonstrates the NP-hardness aspect of the problem which becomes quickly intractable as added components or increase in facets are considered.

▼ Foundry coke is currently the primary energy source of U.S. iron foundries employing cupolas to produce iron. The availability, cost and environmental impact of this fuel usage limit the production of iron. The replacement of foundry coke with bindered anthracite fines reduces costs and negative environmental impact while allowing for the increase in iron production. Others have shown that anthracite fines bindered with collagen (which provides strength from ambient temperatures to 400 °C), lignin (which provides strength between 400 °C and 1200 °C) and silicon metal (which provides strength at temperatures in excess of 1200 °C) can serve as a partial foundry coke substitute.
Silicon metal provides strength at high temperature by reacting with carbon present in the briquette to form interlocking networks of silicon carbide nanowires that originate on the surface of anthracite grains. Whereas others have shown that silicon metal could serve as a precursor for silicon carbide in bindered anthracite briquettes, the aim of this work was to determine whether rice
hull derived silica offered potential as a silicon carbide precursor for collagen and lignin bindered anthracite briquettes. Rice hulls and rice
hull char, waste products of the rice industry, are inexpensive and abundant resources of oxidized silicon.
Upon pyrolysis in a tube furnace at 1550 °C, silicon carbide formation occurred in samples via vapor phase reactions involving silicon monoxide gas. Silicon carbide nanowires readily formed during the pyrolysis of rice hulls and rice
hull char when anthracite was employed as an oxygen scavenger. Silicon carbide nanowires also formed during the pyrolysis of rice
hull char without an oxygen scavenger. Rice
hull char yielded more silicon carbide than rice hulls, per unit mass, under the same pyrolysis conditions. Silicon carbide also formed during the pyrolysis of anthracite bindered briquettes containing collagen, lignin, rice hulls and rice
hull char, when anthracite was employed as an oxygen scavenger. Silicon carbide product formations predominantly occurred on the external surface of the briquettes and this external product formation increased with increasing compression force and silica concentration, as well as decreasing anthracite grain size. White rice
hull ash served as a poor sole silicon carbide precursor for collagen and lignin bindered anthracite briquettes, yielding minimal silicon monoxide gas; but its use resulted in the formation of a variety of silica rods on the surfaces of internal anthracite grains.

In this thesis, we give some new results about the average size of convex hulls made of points chosen in a convex body. This size is known when the points are chosen uniformly (and independently) in a convex polytope or in a "smooth" enough convex body. This average size is also known if the points are independently chosen according to a centered Gaussian distribution. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce a technique that will give new results when the points are chosen arbitrarily in a convex body, and then noised by some random perturbations. This kind of analysis, called smoothed analysis, has been initially developed by Spielman and Teng in their study of the simplex algorithm. For an arbitrary set of point in a ball, we obtain a lower and a upper bound for this smoothed complexity, in the case of uniform perturbation in a ball (in arbitrary dimension) and in the case of Gaussian perturbations in dimension 2. The asymptotic behavior of the expected size of the convex hull of uniformly random points in a convex body is polynomial for a "smooth" body and polylogarithmic for a polytope. In the second part, we construct a convex body so that the expected size of the convex hull of points uniformly chosen in that body oscillates between these two behaviors when the number of points increases. In the last part, we present an algorithm to generate efficiently a random convex hull made of points chosen uniformly and independently in a disk.…

▼ By examining the combined written, ethnographic and physical evidence of a surviving
steam-powered sawmill in the Douglas-fir region of the Pacific Northwest, this thesis
seeks to supply new insights into the operation and adaptability of antiquated machinery
during a period of rapid social and technological change and to develop a descriptive
model for the sawmill industry. Steam-powered sawmills, those mills using steam power
to operate primary and secondary lumber-cutting saws. are now dinosaurs in the sawmill
industry. They are a vanishing example of a mechanical process once common
throughout America. This thesis describes a last-of-its-kind commercially-operating
medium-sized steam-powered sawmill, the
Hull-Oakes Lumber Co. Inc. sawmill in south
Benton County, Oregon. It also explores how this sawmill survived through
specialization rather than through wholesale adoption of emerging technologies. By
examining a surviving sawmill that uses antiquated machinery, this thesis captures in
part the way of life of the builders and practicers of the arts the industry represents: it
also offers new insights for future researchers seeking to understand and explain
industrial adaptability and cultural remains from similar sites. it does this by describing
through words, photographs, diagrams and maps how such mills worked. what the
machinery and its parts looked like, and what physical traces such mills might be
expected to leave after they are gone.

This work shortly describes the algorithms,
that uses unnecessary calculations for the search of convex hull
points. A new algorithm called “Nearest point” is presented in this
work. This algorithm founds the points of convex hull by using the
method of insertion. Two realisations of the “Nearest point”
realisation are presented in the current work.. The “Preparata”
algorithm, the “Nearest point” algorithm, and two realisations of
the “Nearest point” algorithm were build both for Windows and Linux
operating systems. After the realisation of the algorithms
(“Preparata” and “Nearest point”) and two versions of the “Nearest

▼ The prevalent use of induced hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, in reservoirs for shale gas demands that changes in geophysical properties within the fractured rock be studied. Hydraulic fracturing events typically take place over several hours. During this time, the seismic anisotropy of the reservoir rapidly changes. These dynamic seismic velocities can be modeled from reservoir attributes and properties that change during the fracking process. One such dynamic property is the stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) which has been investigated using the Cube and Surfer methods (Adejuyigbe, 2013). For this thesis, we present a new method for modeling the SRV based on minimum convex hulls. This method was implemented and tested using data from the Dollie Thorell Well in the Barnett shale in North Texas. Results from those tests show that the convex
hull method is robust at modeling scattered microseismic event sets of spherical or cylindrical character. For these microseismic event sets, this modeling technique yielded a logarithmic increase in stimulated reservoir volume over time. The minimum convex
hull method was implemented as a module within a 4D software framework to allow for the uniform data representation, processing flow, and visualization of future research methods. This work provides a starting point for SRV estimation research by investigating the minimum convex
hull method while delivering effective 4D tools for future SRV estimation studies.
