▼ Background: Homeopathic drug proving is a basic concept in
homeopathy. This
study aimed to record symptoms produced by a homeopathic drug compared with
placebo. Methods: This multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-
controlled phase 1 trial consisted of a 7-day run-in period, a 5-day
intervention period and a 16-day post-intervention observation period.
Subjects, investigators and statisticians were blinded for intervention groups
and identity of the homeopathic drug. Subjects in the intervention group
received Okoubaka aubrevillei (potency C12) and subjects in the placebo group
received the optically identical sucrose globules. Dosage in both groups was
five globules taken five times per day over a maximum period of 5 days.
Subjects documented the symptoms they experienced in a semistructured online
diary. The primary outcome parameter was the number of characteristic proving
symptoms compared with placebo after a period of 3 weeks. Characteristic
symptoms were categorised using content analysis. Secondary outcome parameters
were the qualitative differences in profiles of characteristic and proving
symptoms and the total number of all proving symptoms. The number of symptoms
was quantitatively analysed on an intention-to-treat basis using analyses of
covariance with the subject’s expectation and baseline values as covariates.
Results: Thirty-one subjects were included (19 Okoubaka and 12 placebo). Data
for 29 participants could be analysed. No significant differences in number of
characteristic symptoms in both groups were observed between Okoubaka (mean ±
standard deviation 5.4 ± 6.0) and placebo (4.9 ± 5.6). The odds ratio for
observation of a characteristic symptom was 1.11 (95% confidence interval 0.4
to 3.05, P = 0.843). Females and subjects expecting a higher number of
symptoms at baseline or feeling more sensitive to homeopathic drugs
experienced more characteristic symptoms regardless of allocation. The
qualitative analysis showed an inter-coder reliability of 0.69 (95% confidence
interval 0.62 to 0.76). The qualitative comparison of symptom profiles was
inconclusive. Conclusions: Combined results of qualitative and quantitative
methods did not result in a significant difference of characteristic proving
symptoms between O. aubrevillei C12 and placebo. The qualitative comparison of
the symptom profiles leaves some open questions. The nocebo effect might be a
plausible explanation for most of the phenomena observed in this trial.

▼ The homoeopathy belongs in Germany to the mostly widespread, but also most
argumentative complementary-medical procedures. At the same time Germany is
the second largest market for homoeopathic drugs in the EU to France. In the
contradiction to the fact stands that though themselves patients improve under
homoeopathic treatment, but there is no methodical high-quality document for
the fact that this drug homoeopathic on the specific effect is due. the drugs
could be caused. The aim of this work is to confront the present results from
observation studies and randomisierten placebo-controlled studies to the
homoeopathy at the example of the cephalalgia studies systematically and to
analyse which differences there are in Setting, patient's clientele, treatment
and result measurement and how these can affect if necessary the study result.
The original data from randomisierten to controlled studies (RCTs) and
uncontrolled prospektiven observation studies were analysed to the
homoeopathic treatment by migraine and tone cephalalgias under the
abovementioned points of view and the results were compared with each other.
Moreover, describing data were considered to study design, study population
and treatment. Because certain circumstances were raised in the different
studies differently, was measured, e.g., with different instruments or
procedures and at different time, the data had to be brought in a form
comparable structurally and concerning the contents. General state of health,
starch of the cephalalgias, interference of the everyday life, gravity of the
illness and the summarised accompanying illnesses was categorised concerning
the age of the patients at treatment beginning (four age groups), illness
duration, to disease groups. All together the original data could be included
by two RCTs and five uncontrolled observation studies in the analysis. With it
the data of 953 cephalalgia patients were given (93 from RCTs and 860 from
observation studies). Patients in the observation studies were younger on
average than patients in the RCTs (men: 32,0±16,8 years versus 49,3±10,2 to
years and women 35,6±13,6 versus 44,0±10,1). Patients in the observation
studies and RCTs had a comparable Stäke of the middle cephalalgias (on a scale
from 0-100 in the observation studies 58,8±19,3 and in the RCTs 61,6±16,6).
However, patients had an illness duration on average shorter about 16 years in
the observation studies. If one looks at the differences concerning the
comorbidity enclosed patients, in particular heart circulation or stomach
bowel illnesses appear more often with the RCTs. The gravity of the
cephalalgia illness was comparable in most studies. One was identified that
the RCT patients were better in comparison to the state before the treatment
after the therapy (pre post comparison) hardly, while a clear improvement
appeared with the patients of the observation studies. This became clear
concerning the gravity of the illness, the general condition and the
cephalalgia strength. In points expressed the result reads as follows.…

▼ Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the health care costs for
patients using additional homeopathic treatment (
homeopathy group) with the
costs for those receiving usual care (control group). Methods: Cost data
provided by a large German statutory health insurance company were
retrospectively analysed from the societal perspective (primary outcome) and
from the statutory health insurance perspective. Patients in both groups were
matched using a propensity score matching procedure based on socio-demographic
variables as well as costs, number of hospital stays and sick leave days in
the previous 12 months. Total cumulative costs over 18 months were compared
between the groups with an analysis of covariance (adjusted for baseline
costs) across diagnoses and for six specific diagnoses (depression, migraine,
allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis, and headache). Results: Data
from 44,550 patients (67.3% females) were available for analysis. From the
societal perspective, total costs after 18 months were higher in the
homeopathy group (adj. mean: EUR 7,207.72 [95% CI 7,001.14–7,414.29]) than in
the control group (EUR 5,857.56 [5,650.98–6,064.13]; p<0.0001) with the
largest differences between groups for productivity loss (
homeopathy EUR
3,698.00 [3,586.48–3,809.53] vs. control EUR 3,092.84 [2,981.31–3,204.37]) and
outpatient care costs (
homeopathy EUR 1,088.25 [1,073.90–1,102.59] vs. control
EUR 867.87 [853.52–882.21]). Group differences decreased over time. For all
diagnoses, costs were higher in the
homeopathy group than in the control
group, although this difference was not always statistically significant.
Conclusion: Compared with usual care, additional homeopathic treatment was
associated with significantly higher costs. These analyses did not confirm
previously observed cost savings resulting from the use of
homeopathy in the
health care system.

▼ Puerperium diseases are common in dairy cows after calving and treatment regimen often includes antibiotic drugs. Due to the increase in antibiotic resistances in human and veterinary medicine, antibiotic veterinary treatments are increasingly critically discussed.
As an alternative to allopathic (e.g. antibiotic or NSAIDs) therapies, homeopathic treatments are already widely used in animal production. However, evidence based studies about their efficacy are still lacking.
The aim of this triple-blinded, randomized and placebo controlled clinical study was to assess the efficacy of homeopathic treatments in acute calving-related diseases in early postpartum dairy cows.
Between June 2013 and May 2014, 663 cows with acute calving-related postpartum diseases from a conventional dairy farm in Brandenburg were enrolled in the study. Relevant diseases were unspecific fever, retained placenta, and vulvovaginal laceration. Poor general appearance (e.g. downer cow or prolonged fever) was used as an exclusion criterion. Animals were randomly assigned to a
homeopathy and a placebo group (n = 595). Towards the end of the study, a control group (n = 68) was added to the design to assess the potential placebo effect. Homeopathic preparations (remedies) were individually selected depending on the individual disease condition and according to treatment protocols of the farm. The placebo group received placebo globules. If necessary, animals from all groups were eligible to receive allopathic treatments.
Data collection included general parameters (e.g. lactation number, breeding values, and milk yield), disease related parameters (e.g. number of disease and fever days), treatment related parameters (e.g. type of treatment and number of treatment days), and reproductive and culling data up to 200 days in milk.
For statistical analyses, Chi-squared test, ANOVA, non-parametric tests, Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox-regression were used.
Study animals in all three groups were very similar in basic characteristics, allowing the comparison among groups. There were no differences in breed, genetic potential, and milk yield in the previous lactation. Similarly, reproductive parameters (e.g. number of inseminations, time to first service, time to conception, and calving interval) and calving ease was similar among groups. An exception was the age at first calving which was significantly lower in the control group compared to the
homeopathy and placebo groups. Similarly, there was a tendency for a lower lactation number in the control group.
The three groups showed no difference regarding disease duration (p = 0,108), number of inseminations (p = 0,299), time to first service (p = 0,197), milk yield within the first 100 days in milk (p = 0,251) and risk of culling (p = 0,805). Furthermore, there were no differences among groups in the number of antibiotic treatments (p = 0,061) and non-antibiotic treatments (p = 0,076). The control group had a significantly reduced treatment duration in comparison with the
homeopathy and placebo groups (p…

▼ CAM Therapies, and in particular
homeopathy, are controversially debated but
nevertheless frequently applied medical treatments - despite the lack of
scientific evidence proving their effectiveness. This prospective multicentre
cohort study aims at evaluating long term changes in health status under
routine homeopathic treatment based on data from an 8-year follow-up. It
includes 3,981 patients (age >1 year) who for the first time visited one of
the 103 participating homeopathic primary care practices in Germany and
Switzerland. The main two outcome parameters were are: 1) the patient’s
perspective on his changing medical condition over time (numeric rating scales
from 0 = no complaint to 10 = maximum severity), and 2) his quality of life as
measured with the MOS SF-36 as baseline, and after 2 and 8 years respectively.
In total, data from 3,709 patients was analyzed of which 73.2% (1,903 adults,
72.9% female, age 48.3 ± 12.4; 819 children, 48.4% female, age 14.1 ± 4.2)
contributed to the 8-year follow-up. 79% of the patients suffered from long-
term chronic diseases with allergic rhinitis being the most frequent among the
men, headache the most frequent among the women, and atopic dermatitis the
most frequent among the children. The severity of their medical conditions
decreased significantly (p < 0.001) between the baseline, and 2 and 8 years
later (adults from 6.2 ± 1.7 to 2.9 ± 2.2 and 2.7 ± 2.1; children from 6.1 ±
1.8 to 2.1 ± 2.0 and 1.7 ± 1.9). The more severe the disease was at the
outset, the more the patients’ physical and mental quality of life increased
during the course of the study. All in all, young patients and women showed
more clinically relevant improvements in health than older patients or men.
Conclusion: Patients with long-term chronic diseases who seek homeopathic
treatment experience clinically significant improvements to their health.
These effects persist for as long as 8 years. Although, due to the study
design, we are unable to estimate the size of placebo effects, the study
provides excellent data for the planning of further, more rigorous studies
dealing with the effectiveness of frequent homeopathic treatment of disease.

▼ The present investigation was conducted on a large biodyn farm in Brandenburg,
Germany. The incidence of clinical mastitis within the first three month post
partum varied between 22 % and 48 % on this farm. Quarter milk samples taken
before drying off showed that 60 % of the cows were infected, mainly with
S.aureus.
A total of 300 cows were included in a placebo controlled, double-blinded
field study. At drying off and at parturition they were treated either with a
combined homeopathic remedy aimed at type and constitution (verum) or with a
placebo. Cows with latent or subclinical infected quarters additionally
received a dry cow long-term antibiotic intra cisternally.
Four different combinations of homeopathic remedies were tested for the
therapy of clinical mastitis arising for the first time during lactation. A
totoal of 149 cows (185 quarters) were treated homeopathically. In the control
group 139 cows (163 quarters) received conventional antimicobial intramammary
treatment.
The prophylactic use of homeopathic remedies had a positive effect on udder
health in single groups of animals, whereas the therapeutic effect of
homeopathic remedies on clinical mastitis was in part comparable and in part
poorer with respect to antbiotic treatment. A combination of both therapies
showed the best results.
Based on the results of the present investigation, a new and promising concept
on complementary medicine using less antibiotics and is recommended for
implementation.

homeopathy has doubled since 1993 (5900
physicians). But there is a lack of large systematic data on the
characteristics of patients who seek homeopathic care, the spectrum of
diagnoses and the position of the physicians practising
homeopathy in public
health. In a prospective cohort study from september of 1997 to June 1999,
3981 patients (2851 adults and 1130 children) treated by 103 physicians (100
physicians from Germany, 3 from Switzerland) practising
homeopathy were
consecutively included at their initial office visit and subsequently
monitored using standardized questionnaires. The physicians documented the
diagnoses in textform and were coded in ICD-9 and ICD-10 by specialist of the
institute. The most frequent diagnoses were allergic rhinitis in men (10,3%),
migraine in women (9,7%) and atopic dermatitis in children of both gender
(21,2% in girls and 18,7% in boys). 36,4% of the disorders were coded as
symptoms (e.g. headache, sleep disturbances). This spectrum of diagnoses is
markedly different from those of patients seeking primarily conventional care.
In comparison an analysis of 70.000 patients under conventional treatment
showed that hypertension (21,9%) in adults and acute rhinopharyngitis (4,2%)
in children were the most frequent diagnoses. Additionally patients seeking
homeopathic differed in socio-demographic factors from those seeking
conventional care. Homeopathic treated patients were on average younger, had a
higher education and lived more often in partnerships. 97% of the patients had
chronic disorders with an average duration of 10.3 ± 9.8 years in adults and
4.3 ± 3.7 years in children. Homeopathic care, therefore, appears to be a
treatment which is mainly used by patients with chronic disorders.

▼ Title: Principles of homeopathic remedy pictures in veterinary medicine -
historic roots and current applications in practice - instancing Arsenicum
album, Atropa belladonna, Lachesis muta, Strychnos nux vomica and Pulsatilla
pratensis The objective of this research was to analyse veterinary remedy
pictures (RP) of the homeopathic remedies Arsenicum album, Belladonna,
Lachesis, Nux vomica and Pulsatilla with regard to the origin of their
respective symptoms (veterinary / human) and to make a statement about the
current RP of these remedies in veterinary
homeopathy. The results of the
research were analysed and discussed under different aspects. Literature was
sorted through and the chosen symptoms were searched for the existence or
absence of a human homeopathic reference. To exactly pinpoint their origin,
the symptoms which have a human homoeopathic equivalent and which have not
been observed by Genzke at a proving were referenced as human homoeopathic
derived symptoms. Symptoms observed by Genzke during a proving were referenced
as veterinary-symptoms. Symptoms without a human homoeopathic counterpart were
treated likewise. A symptom quoted by several authors was chronologically
referenced. To illustrate the historic development of veterinary remedy
pictures, symptoms were divided in groups mentioned only before 1950, after or
before and after 1950. Results of the count of the lists of symptoms (remedy
pictures) The symptoms of the veterinary remedy pictures were counted with
regard to the mentioned criteria and the results were compared. Numbers are
expressed as a percentage (rounded to the next integer) in relation to the
totality of symptoms (N=100%). Historical referencing of the symptoms The
remedy picture of Arsenicum, Belladonna, Nux vomica und Pulsatilla are
mentioned 40 to 46% of the time in literature before 1950 only, 44-49% are
mentioned in literature only after 1950; 10-11% are mentioned before 1950 and
after 1950 as well. The remedy picture of Lachesis moved the chronological
distribution of symptoms significantly towards recent symptoms. This
divergence is explained by the late introduction of Lachesis as a homoeopathic
remedy. Presence or Absence of human homeopathic references The percentage of
symptoms with a human homeopathic reference was with 80-84% much larger than
the group of symptoms without a human homeopathic reference. Influence of
Genzke to homoeopathic provings The percentage of symptoms mentioned by Genzke
is 18-34%, the percentage of Symptoms observed during a proving is 3-14%. The
percentage of Proving-Symptoms mentioned by Genzke found in literature after
1950 was 1-4%. Analysis of the veterinary remedy pictures with regard to the
origin of their symptoms The examined symptoms were divided in six groups
taking into account their origin and the period of time they were mentioned as
well. Ranks of value were assigned to the groups (Rank 1-6) providing a
ranking that made the analysis of the base of recent veterinary remedy
pictures possible. The basis of veterinary remedy pictures…

▼ The use of complementary medical techniques such as
homeopathy and Chinese
medicine has increased markedly in recent years, despite the fact that their
modes of action have yet to be explained scientifically. With the exception of
the treatment of some indications, evidence of the effectiveness of
homeopathy
and acupuncture has been insufficient to date, and epidemiological data on the
spectrum of diagnoses and therapies in complementary medicine have been
lacking entirely. The findings of our basic research in
homeopathy showed that
a rigorous research methodology is required, especially the use of adequate
controls. In our studies of
homeopathy and acupuncture in routine medical care
we found that both techniques were indeed associated with positive effects,
even if none of the investigations with the exception of our acupuncture
study in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee provide causal evidence of
effectiveness. The proportion of non-specific effects in acupuncture treatment
was high, the same can be assumed for
homeopathy. For other techniques of
Chinese medicine, such as Chinese pharmacotherapy or Qigong, first signs of
positive effects have become apparent. For further incorporating complementary
medicine into conventional medicine more basic and clinical research is
required, employing the highest of methodological standards. In order to
provide patients with the best care possible, a constructive dialogue between
conventional and complementary medicine is both desirable and necessary.

▼ Karl Philipp Moritz's great interest in human psychology was analysed by the
critics from different points of view, such as biographical, philosophical,
social-historical and psychological. In this PhD dissertation I examine
Moritz's interest in psychology from another perspective: the cultural-
historical one. Considering subjectivity not only as a fundamental value but
also as a central problem of a cultural system developing at the end of the
18th century from different trends (Pietism, Quietism, Empfindsamkeit,
Anthropology, etc.), this dissertation interprets Moritz's interest in the
individual as an interest in crucial questions resulting from the beginning of
a new cultural era and from a new way of thinking. This dissertation is in
three parts. First of all, it analyses Moritz's empirical psychology
(Erfahrungsseelenkunde) and its basis in tradition and then it highlights
Moritz's special position in the discussion of his time. Secondly, it
discusses literary figures in Moritz's works, to point out the affinities and
also to underline the differences between Moritz's conception of the
individual and that of authors belonging to Empfindsamkeit. The features of
Moritz's literary figures are absolutely new in his age and they stand for a
cultural change. Rousseau's influence on Moritz, in the context of the warm
reception of the Swiss philosopher's works in Germany at the end of the 18th
century, is one of the basic sources of the new literary representation and of
Moritz's view of the individual and of the society of his age. Moritz's
reception of Rousseau's Kulturkritik is also a fundamental means of
interpretation in understanding the affinities between Moritz's conception of
the individual and that of another great writer in the literary spectrum of
this age: the young Goethe. Having analysed the links between Moritz and the
young Goethe with regard to Rousseau's criticism, this dissertation moves on
to Moritz's psychological novel Anton Reiser, which plays a vital role in any
study concerning subjectivity. Anton Reiser's historia morbi, which is set in
the coordinates "oppression/self-pretence/self-betrayal", shows that the
individual portrayed in Moritz's works is the representative of an age of
transition that suffers from an overgrown subjectivity. Thirdly, this study
considers the role played by subjectivity in Moritz's aesthetic program.
According to Moritz, art must be an anti-subjective sphere. It must be an
autonomous but representative symbol for reality and it cannot be reduced to a
function of personal subjectivity. This programmatic separation of art and
life aims to fight against excessive and pathological subjectivity, which is
deleterious for art and for anyone aspiring to be an artist. In conclusion,
this dissertation comes to an apparent paradox: Moritz's empirical psychology,
his literary representation and his aesthetic theories are anti-subjective,
because they all aim to state and to cure the pathological consequences of
subjectivity. However, its manifest that Moritz's works also…

▼ Background: Physicians who practice complementary medicine often have a
different understanding of health and disease compared to their colleagues
practicing conventional medicine. The aim of this study was to identify the
thoughts, beliefs and concepts concerning infectious childhood diseases
(measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, pertussis and scarlet fever) held by
physicians practicing homoeopathic, anthroposophic and conventional medicine.
Methods: This study used a qualitative-comparative study design with semi-
structured interviews. Data collection and analysis were based in grounded
theory. Interviews were conducted with homeopathic, anthroposophic, and
conventional physicians who were either general practitioners or pediatricians
Results: 18 physicians were interviewed, 6 homeopathic, 6 anthroposophic and 6
conventional. All physicians agreed that while many classic infectious
childhood diseases like measles, mumps and rubella are only rarely seen today,
other diseases, such as chicken pox and scarlet fever, are still commonly
diagnosed. A core concern for physicians practicing conventional medicine was
the risk of complications. Therefore, it was considered essential for them to
strictly follow the vaccination schedule. However, homeopathic physicians
viewed acute disease as a natural biological process necessary to strengthen
health, fortify the immune system and increase resistance to chronic disease.
They tended to treat infectious childhood diseases with predominantly
homeopathic remedies and administer vaccines in an individualized manner.
Informing parents of potential benefits and risks of vaccination was
considered important. For anthroposophic physicians, infectious childhood
diseases were a crucial factor in the psychosocial and spiritual growth of the
child. Anthroposophic physicians tended to treat infectious childhood diseases
with anthroposophic medicine and considered the support and use of family
resources as important. Vaccinations were administered in an individualized
manner. All physicians agreed that parent-delivered loving care of a sick
child could benefit the parent-child relationship. However, in modern society,
with both parents working, parents were often unable to spend time caring for
their children. Conclusion: Differing concepts of infectious childhood
diseases between physicians practicing complementary and conventional medicine
result in differing methods of prevention and therapy. A critical dialogue
between conventional and complementary practitioners should include conceptual
frameworks that shape clinical decisions and allow for consequent treatment
methodologies to be established.

▼ The consumption of organic products has become of interest in the last years.
There is a high demand for produce from animals farmed under high animal
welfare standards and the use of as little antibiotics as possible. Therefore
the agricultural industry has begun looking into alternative production
methods. Research shows that with the optimization of herd health monitoring,
specific use of antibiotics and homeopathic treatments antibiotic use could be
reduced up to 75 %. The aim is to analyze herd health and problem areas in
organic milk cows and to dissect the possibilities of homeopathic treatments.
Therefore herd and reproduction key figures such as blood and urine samples
were gathered, body condition scores and herd health evaluated. A three times
blinded, randomized, placebo controlled study on homeopathic treatments in
diary cows with mastitis as well as a randomized, non treated control group on
homeopathic treatments in calves with diarrhea was preformed. The evaluation
took place on an organic diary cow farm in Brandenburg, Germany from May 2012
until February 2014. The farm has an organic producing license for NOP (until
October 2013), Bio-land and Biokreis. Up until the study no homeopathic
medicine was used on the farm. The use of antibiotics was limited for serious
calf ailments. The diary cows did not receive any antibiotics during the
lactation or dry periods. The number of cows was approximately 250 diary cows
as well as 350 heifers, munchers and calves. The ordinary 305-milk-output was
8379 kg of milk. Compared to other conventional and organic dairy cowherds the
output, herd- health and reproduction key figures of the analyzed herd were
above average. There was however a high number of wastage due to poor udder
health as well as a high number of incidences of new mastitis infections in
heifers at the beginning of their lactation cycle. The dairy cow treatment
consisted of 21 different, high potency (C200), classic homeopathic drugs. In
a ten-month period 72 cows were treated with homeopathic remedies and 62 with
a placebo drug. Parameters such as number of lactation, lactation days,
somatic cell counts and micro-biology of the first milk sample were compared
and analyzed to the number of occurring mastitis, distribution of the
homeopathic drugs, number of waste, number of drug changes as well as the
length oft the ailment. The results showed no significant differences between
the two groups. The randomizing proved efficient while the healing results did
not depend on the way the cows were treated. In conclusion the healing sucess
of homeopathic drugs cannot be proven (p-value of the illness period is
0,304). In the calf study, non-blinded, low potency (D4-D8) homeopathic
injection drugs were utilized. This potency is standard in the treatment of
cows. In six months 32 calves were treated with homeopathic drugs and 33
calves were treated with only an electrolyte drink, as was the standard on the
farm. There was no significant difference between the study parameters of the
two groups. In this group…
