▼ My D.Phil, dissertation sheds new light on German literary decadence around 1900, its universal concepts, plurality of discourses and poetic transformations. The heuristic value of my dissertation is a refined differentiation of Dekadenz which reconstructs the literary history of the concept and for the first time proposes specific poetic constellations. In chapter 1, decadence is reviewed with its rich research heritage and introduced as a decisive concept and discourse of aesthetic modernism. Although much has been written on decadence, the concept is clearly in need of scholarly reconsideration. I argue that decadence is not only a vague epochal construct and an ensemble of motifs, but also encompasses discourses, universal concepts and a versatile literary style. In view of the stylistic eclecticism around 1900, I argue that decadence is a dynamic and malleable concept which can be combined with other aesthetic styles, movements and philosophical contexts depending on the specific author. Chapter 2 contextualizes Dekadenz from its etymology and central discourses to its universal concepts. Etymologically derived from the Latin verb de-cadere decadence signifies a downward movement and a figure of fragmentation. It evokes cultural and political decline especially that of the Roman Empire (dÃ©cadence romaine) and undergoes various aesthetic transformations (1857-1894). After touching upon the precursors Baudelaire (1857), Bourget (1883) and Bahr (1889-1894), I dwell on Nietzsche to demonstrate the philosophically complex German double evaluation of decadence. I derive three universal concepts from Nietzsche (health vs. sickness, endings vs. new beginnings, fragmentation vs. wholeness) which are crucial to my literary analysis. My comprehensive literary analysis centers on three specific poetic constellations of decadence between late realism and aesthetic modernism. Chapter 3 illuminates Mann's spÃ¤trealistische Dekadenz (1894-1924) with his (Nietzschean) double evaluations. Transformations of decadence are shown in his early novellas, Buddenbrooks, Der Tod in Venedig and Der Zauberberg. Chapter 4 illustrates Hofmannsthal's Ã¤sthetizistische Dekadenz (1891-1902) in his early essays, his prose fragment Age of Innocence and Das MÃ¤rchen der 672. Nacht. A significant transformation of decadence is illuminated in Ein Brief (1902), where Nietzschean decadence is concentrated and tentatively overturned. In chapter 5, Rilke's modernistische Dekadenz (1898-1910) is shown from his early fragment Ewald Tragy to his only novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge. His novel attempts a poetic 'revaluation of all values' and culminates in the emergence of a genuinely modernist decadence.

▼ This study examines the literary works of the Argentine writer, Leopoldo Lugones (I874-I938), from an integral perspective. Although Lugones attained almost immediate recognition as one of the most outstanding and representative Argentine writers and published numerous books, he is known today primarily and almost exclusively for his contribution to the "modernist" movement in Argentina and Hispanic America. His poetry has not been duly considered within the context of the totality of his writings. The significance of the integral relationship that exists between his thought and his artistic expression has been neglected by his critics or at best only superficially viewed by them. This dissertation seeks to throw new light on the literary works of Leopoldo Lugones by examining the convergence of his thought and his art on a central issue identified in this study as "the quest for national identity in the writings of Leopoldo Lugones." The far-reaching effects produced by the cosmopolitan immigration and the positivist philosophy of progress, also of foreign origin, represented a contradictory view to Lugones's concept of the Argentine realities. His reaction is clearly evidenced by the intense and continuous search for an authentic national image for his country. The problem of national identity thus became one of the foremost preoccupations of his thought and a predominant theme of his writings. In order to counteract the European cultural influence in Argentina and the materialistic philosophy of non-Argentine origin, Lugones attempts to revive the "gaucho" legacy and to promote a departure from the prevailing materialistic interests by adopting a more meaningful system of values based on what he terms the principle of "spiritualization". Furthermore, the concept of "spiritualization" functions as an underlying theme in Lugones 's writings, securing the unity of the totality of his works. This study attempts to determine to what extent Lugones unfolds a systematic program corresponding to his ideal view of national identity, and how the author directs his aesthetic work to achieve his central objective. The first chapter of this thesis establishes the historical background of Argentina from the period of national emancipation (1810) to the generation of Leopoldo Lugones. The second chapter outlines a biographical profile of Lugones in an attempt to trace the personal traits that caracterize his literary creations. Chapters three and four examine respectively Lugones's concept of "spiritualization" and the author's concern with the cultural dimension of his native country. The fifth chapter approaches Lugones's treatment of national identity from the archetypal perspective, examining the author's deductions from the Greek myth of Prometheus, the national forefathers and the exemplary traits of the "gaucho". The sixth chapter investigates how the poetic writings of Lugones reflect the author's primary objective of the search for national identity. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis explores the Faust legend and its musical manifestations since the 19th century. The objective is to provide a thorough background to the legend, before drawing up an account of compositions inspired by the Faust legend. Firstly, the origin of the legend is investigated, followed by a brief summary of the most important literary works on the subject of Faust. This is followed by a comprehensive outline of the story as told by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and then the most significant compositions inspired by the legend are discussed. A short section containing comparisons of the compositions and the conclusions of the study appears at the end. The legend tells the story of Faust, a scholar, philosopher and alchemist in search of divine knowledge, power and pleasure. Faust encounters the devil and makes a pact with him in which he agrees to surrender his immortal soul, if the devil can satisfy Faust’s thirst for knowledge and grant him the experience of true happiness. The Faust legend is a very popular theme among composers and artists. One of the reasons for the success of the Faust legend is its universal appeal. This has led to various composers using the material as the basis for their works. Goethe’s version of the legend has proven to be the most popular source for composers. To produce a composition that attempts to capture the drama in its entirety, including its psychological and spiritual elements, is not feasible. Works centred on a smaller section, scene or character from Goethe’s Faust were often more successful than the larger operatic compositions. Like all great universal ideas, the Faust legend lends itself to an abundance of interpretations. Similarities between works are rare. Each composer who made use of the Faust legend interpreted it subjectively, which has produced many unique and varied compositions.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word die Faust legende, soos wat dit in verskeie musikale komposisies van die 19de eeu uitgebeeld is, ondersoek. Die doel van die studie is om ‘n lys van werke wat deur die Faustlegende geïnspireer is, saam te stel. Die tesis ondersoek die oorsprong van die legende en gee ‘n kort opsomming van die mees prominente litirêre werke met die Faustlegende as onderwerp. Daarna volg ‘n uiteensetting van die storielyn soos vertel deur Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. ‘n Lys, bestaande uit gesaghebbende Faust komposisies, word ingesluit en laastens volg vergelykings en gevolgtrekkings uit die studie. Die legende vertel die verhaal van Faust, die professor, filosoof en alchemis op soek na kennis, mag en plesier. Faust tree in gesprek met die duiwel en gaan met hom ‘n ooreenkoms aan om sy siel prys te gee in ruil vir kennis en ware geluk. ▼ This paper focuses on the latter phase of Arnold Schoenberg's compositional development and the harmonic structure of his twelve-tone music. The body of this thesis is concerned with examining ideas which both attack and defend Schoenberg's harmonic procedures. The main sections of t.he paper can be summarized as follows. A brief outline of Schoenberg's compositional background and a presentation of the essential points of his twelve-tone technique serve to open the introduction. Following this is an analysis of a serial piece to represent an example which is typical of Schoenberg's approach. With the foundation set, an examination of arguments expressing the inability of the system to produce one integrated musical texture is presented, According to these critics, the row fails to provide a method for determining harmonies aS well as their successions. The following ideas are discussed in support of this viewpoint: 1) The contradictions between the vertical and horizontal planes. 2) A lack of differentiation between adjacent and nonadjacent elements. J) Octave avoidance. 4) The use of traditional harmonic functions. The authors George Perle, Peter Stadlen, Roberto Gerhard, and Oliver Neighbor are discussed in the course of this section. The next major unit examines the ideas in support of Schoenberg's harmonic practices. Here the issues of intervallic unity, comprehensibility, complementary segments, and also tonal procedures are discussed in defense of Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique. These views are in agreement with Schoenberg's belief in the "comprehensibility" or the regularity of twelve-tone harmony. The writers representative of this side of the argument are Martha Hyde, Milton Babbitt, Josef Rufer, Walter Piston, as well as Schoenberg himself. To close the paper, the above views are analyzed and this author's own views concerning Schoenberg's serial harmonic practices are revealed and supported.
