▼ The rapid growth of the solar industry over the past several years has expanded the significance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. One of the primary aims of research in building-integrated PV systems is to improve the performance of the system’s efficiency, availability, and reliability. Although much work has been done on technological design to increase a photovoltaic module’s efficiency, there is little research so far on fault diagnosis for PV systems. Faults in a PV system, if not detected, may not only reduce power generation, but also threaten the availability and reliability, effectively the “security” of the whole system. ❧ In this paper, first a circuit-based simulation baseline model of a PV system with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is developed using MATLAB software . MATLAB is one of the most popular tools for integrating computation, visualization and programming in an easy-to-use modeling environment. Second, data collection of a PV system at variable surface temperatures and insolation levels under normal operation is acquired. The developed simulation model of PV system is then calibrated and improved by comparing modeled I-V and P-V characteristics with measured I–V and P–V characteristics to make sure the simulated curves are close to those measured values from the experiments. Finally, based on the circuit-based simulation model, a PV model of various types of faults will be developed by changing conditions or inputs in the MATLAB model, and the I–V and P–V characteristic curves, and the time-dependent voltage and current characteristics of the fault modalities will be characterized for each type of fault. These will be developed as benchmark I-V or P-V, or prototype transient curves. If a fault occurs in a PV system, polling and comparing actual measured I–V and P–V characteristic curves with both normal operational curves and these baseline fault curves will aid in fault diagnosis. ▼ The subject of the present thesis is the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger system, which is a gauge-covariant Schrödinger system in two spatial dimensions with a long-range electromagnetic field. The present thesis studies two aspects of the system: that of well-posedness and that of the long-time behaviour. The first main result of the thesis concerns the large-data well-posedness of the initial-value problem for the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger system. We impose the Coulomb gauge to remove the gauge-invariance, in order to obtain a well-defined initial-value problem. We prove that, in the Coulomb gauge, the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger system is locally well-posed in the Sobolev spaces H^s for s ≥ 1, and that the solution map satisfies a weak Lipschitz continuity estimate. The main technical difficulty is the presence of a derivative nonlinearity, which rules out the naive iteration scheme for proving well-posedness. The key idea is to retain the non-perturbative part of the derivative nonlinearity in the principal operator, and to exploit the dispersive properties of the resulting paradifferential-type principal operator, in particular frequency-localised Strichartz estimates, using adaptations of the U^p and V^p spaces introduced by Koch and Tataru in other contexts. The other main result of the thesis characterises the large-time behaviour in the case where the interaction potential is the defocusing cubic term. We prove that the solution to the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger system in the Coulomb gauge, starting from a localised finite-energy initial datum, will scatter to a free Schrödinger wave at large times. The two crucial ingredients here are the discovery of a new conserved quantity, that of a pseudo-conformal energy, and the cubic null structure discovered by Oh and Pusateri, which reveals a subtle cancellation in the long-range electromagnetic effects. By exploiting pseudo-conformal symmetry, we also prove the existence of wave operators for the Chern-Simons-Schrödinger system in the Coulomb gauge: given a localised finite-energy final state, there exists a unique solution which scatters to that prescribed state.

▼ Le béton drainant est généralement utilisé pour ses caractéristiques drainantes, d'ailleurs ces dernières décennies ont été marqué par une utilisation croissante du béton drainant aux États-Unis, à cause de l'adoption d'une loi spéciale sur la gestion des eaux de ruissèlement et de surface. Les applications les plus courantes sont: les aires de stationnements, les chaussées à faible trafic et les terrains de tennis. Cependant, le béton drainant possède des faibles propriétés mécaniques comparativement au béton conventionnel. Ceci est dû à sa porosité effective relativement importante. Le but principal pour le concepteur est alors de trouver un équilibre entre les propriétés mécaniques et drainantes conformément aux exigences voulues. Dans cette étude, un intérêt particulier est porté sur la méthode de formulation du béton drainant. La méthode proposée dans la littérature ne couvre pas tous les granulats et ne fournit pas de recommandations simples d'application pour faciliter la procédure de formulation. Dans la méthode proposée, la porosité inter-granulaire, déterminée via la compacité granulaire, est le paramètre principal pour la formulation des bétons drainant. Il est également question d'évaluer l'effet de différents paramètres de formulation ainsi que de l'effet de l'énergie de consolidation sur les propriétés drainantes et mécaniques des bétons drainants. Les échantillons de béton sont préparés en utilisant deux différents niveaux d'énergie de consolidation. Une modélisation à l'aide des plans d'expériences considérant trois paramètres les plus influents (Rapport E/C, le volume de pâte, et la teneur en agent réducteur d'eau) a permis de quantifier la contribution de chaque paramètres ainsi que leur interactions sur les différentes propriétés évaluées. Afin de faciliter l'approche de formulation des bétons drainants, le volume de pâte est exprimé en fonction du volume de vide inter-granulaire (V P /VVG ). L'effet des particules fines sur les propriétés mécaniques a également été évalué. Les résultats 'de cette étude montrent que les propriétés déterminées à partir de la courbe granulométrique ne suffisent pas pour prédire la porosité inter-granulaire des granulats utilisés. Les résultats ont également montré que la formulation des bétons drainants est réalisable avec des rapports V P /GVG compris entre 30 à 60%. Cependant, le rapport VP /VVG optimal trouvé est situé à environ 50%. Par ailleurs, les résultats montrent que les propriétés mécaniques ne dépendent pas de la taille des granulats, mais elles sont fonction de la distribution granulométriques et de la quantité des éléments fins des granulats. L'analyse des résultats obtenus sur les bétons étudiés dans le programme montre que la porosité requise pour obtenir une perméabilité minimale de 1 mm/sec est de 19%. Les modèles statistiques établis sont fiables et peuvent être utilisé pour décrire l'influence des paramètres étudiés (rapport E/C, VP /VVG , agent réducteur d'eau) sur les propriétés drainantes et mécaniques du béton drainant. ▼ Depuis les années 2000, en raison d’une multitude de moyens de communication émergents, les besoins en termes d’échange de données n’ont cessé d’augmenter. Ces modifications ont conduit à l’initiation d’une transition depuis les technologies électroniques vers les technologies et interconnexions optiques. Entre autres, ces nouvelles technologies nécessitent l’utilisation de composants émetteurs et récepteurs de photons constitués de matériaux III-V. De façon à miniaturiser ces composants et à augmenter leurs performances tout en diminuant leur coût de fabrication, un modèle d’intégration innovant consiste à intégrer directement les sources III-V sur le circuit photonique silicium 200 mm. Afin d’optimiser les performances du laser III-V tout en respectant les contraintes liées à une salle blanche front-end / middle-end silicium, la réalisation d’une telle intégration nécessite notamment le développement de contacts innovants sur n-InP et p-InGaAs.Ces travaux de thèse sont ainsi centrés autour du développement d’une nouvelle architecture de contacts répondant aux exigences d’une salle blanche front-end / middle-end silicium 200 mm, tout en optimisant les performances du laser III-V. Un schéma d’intégration innovant des contacts est tout d’abord présenté dans sa globalité puis une optimisation des procédés d’intégration disponibles est proposée. Ceci permet de profiter de l’avantage économique que procure le fait d’utiliser l’expertise existante tout en préservant les surfaces III-V et en optimisant les performances d’émission du laser. Une attention particulière est portée sur le développement de la métallisation de contact, elle-même reposant sur la formation de composés intermétalliques à l’interface entre le métal déposé et le semi-conducteur. Une étude métallurgique approfondie est ainsi conduite sur les systèmes Ni/n-InP, Ni/p-InGaAs et Ti/n-InP dans le but d’identifier les séquences de phases ainsi que des mécanismes mis en jeu et enfin leur stabilité thermique. Finalement, l’ensemble de ces métallisations sont intégrées au sein de dispositifs dédiés au test électriques des contacts. Les résistivités spécifiques de contacts associées sont ainsi extraites. Grâce à l’ensemble de ces travaux, les métallisations et procédés permettant d’optimiser les performances électriques des contacts intégrés tout en garantissant leur stabilité sont finalement identifiés. ▼ III-V multi-junction solar cells (MJSC), which consist of different energy bandgap materials to match the solar spectrum, have been used in high concentrated photovoltaic (HCPV) to achieve high solar power conversion efficiency (Î·). Self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) structure is expected to be a good candidate for solar cells capable of absorbing light near 1.0 eV. Furthermore, the energy bandgaps for the QDs can be tuned by changing the material compositions and the dot size. By stacking these QD layers of different energy bandgaps, the optical absorption in the infrared region can be enhanced. First, we discuss difference of AMQD and AM+Dwell structure. After Photoluminescence (PL), Electroluminescence (EL) and Photovoltaic characteristics measurement, in asymmetric quantum dots-in-a-well solar cell, the strain effect of self-assembled quantum dots is relieved by form of quantum well. The asymmetric quantum dots-in-a-well solar cell has obtained an conversion efficiency Voc =0.65V, Jsc =17.9 mA/cm2, FF=70.5% and Î·=8.2%. The conversion efficiency optimization of AM+Dwellï¼2Ã1017 cm-3ï¼is using different solutions such as coating a layer of 100nm SiO2, 100nm ZnO, a double layers of (50nm)Si3N4/(30nm)ZnO, and thinning. The highest conversion efficiency performance of optimizing is Voc = 0.73 Vï¼Jsc = 27.4 mA/cm2ï¼FF=75 %ï¼Î·=15.0 %ã For the Dwell structure, p-type doping concentration is changed by doping Be for 2Ã1016 cm-3, 2Ã1017 cm-3, 2Ã1018 cm-3 respectively. After comparison of photoelectrical properties and solar cell performance ,the dopant concentration of 2Ã1017 cm-3 has shown the optimal characteristics with a Voc = 0.73 V, Jsc = 27.4 mA/cm2, FF=75 % and Î·=15.0 %. Finally, the optimized result of various methods is examined using concentration I-V measurement under simulated solar light of 10 to 100 suns. While increasing concentration suns, the photo-generate current enhances along with the number of photons increases, thus, the open-circuit voltage and the current coefficient is proportional to the light. At concentration of 80 suns, Voc = 0.88 Vï¼Jsc = 2000.7 mA/cm2ï¼FF=81 %ï¼Î·=17.83 %, with conversion efficiency improvement of 59% compare to former. ▼ In this study, galangal extract was tested for its efficacy for controlling shrimp pathogens, using Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) which is the main product of penaeid shrimp. We discovered that the galangal (Alpinia galanga Linn.), ethanol extract suppressed the growth of 8 pathogenic Vibrio species, V. parahaemolyticus (EMS/AHPND) in particular. We also found that antibacterial compounds of the galangal extract were trans-p-hydroxy cinnamaldehyde, trans-p-acetoxy cinnamic alcohol and trans-p-coumaryl diacetate with the half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) against V. harveyi of 0.0740 ± 0.0095, > 5 and 0.7200 ± 0.0190 ?mol/ml, respectively. A commercial diet mixed with galangal extract was fed to shrimp. At the end of the feeding trial, the numbers of total Vibrio spp. and the incidence of fungi infestation in the hepatopancreas and intestines of shrimp were significantly lower than that in the control group. Furthermore, the survival rates for the treatment groups, after injections with V. parahaemolyticus (EMS/AHPND), V. harveyi or white spot syndrome virus were significantly higher than that of the control group. The number of V. harveyi in the hemolymph of the galangal diet group was significantly lower than that in the control diet group, indicating the higher clearance ability of the galangal diet group. The intramuscular injection of either galangal extract or trans-p-coumaryl diacetate to Pacific white shrimp showed significant increases in the relative expression level of the six immune-related genes compared with a control group. Furthermore, by the oral administration of galangal extract, similar inducible effects of the expression of immune-related genes in shrimp were obtained, which led to an enhanced survival rate from V. harveyi infection. Based on these results, the galangal extract might be useful for the treatment of shrimp diseases in the aquaculture industry. Moreover, this studies can solve the problem of antibiotic residual in shrimp product and make it safe for consumers.

▼ Avec l’usage intensif de dispositifs microélectroniques modernes, il existe un besoin croissant de mémoires non volatiles. La FeRAM (mémoire ferroélectrique à accès aléatoire) est une des mémoires de nouvelle génération les plus prometteuses en raison de sa faible consommation et de sa vitesse élevé de lecture/écriture. Parmi les différents matériaux ferroélectriques, le PZT (Pb (Zr1-x,Tix)O3) présente une polarisation rémanente élevée et un faible champ coercitif qui en font un candidat de choix pour les FeRAM.Dans cette thèse, la croissance épitaxiale de couches de PZT (52/48) d’épaisseurs variables (33 à 200 nm), sur un substrat de SrTiO3 et une électrode inférieure interfaciale de SrRuO3, a été réalisé par deux méthodes pour comparaison : pulvérisation cathodique et sol – gel. Trois matériaux conducteurs différents (SrRuO3, Pt et ITO) ont été utilisés comme électrode supérieure. L’objectif a été une étude détaillée des propriétés électriques et ferroélectriques de ces structures MFM (métal-ferroélectrique-métal), avec une attention particulière sur l’influence des conditions d’élaboration et de la nature des électrodes sur le courant de fuite et la dynamique de basculement de domaines.Les capacités élaborées par pulvérisation ou sol-gel présentent des caractéristiques semblables : Au-delà d’une épaisseur minimum d’environ 100 nm, pour une structure capacitive à base de PZT de 100 × 100 μm2, elles montrent un faible courant de fuite, une permittivité relative maximale élevée (600 - 1300) et une polarisation rémanente élevée (30 - 40 μC/cm2). Les mécanismes dominants dans le courant de fuite ont été identifiés par un fit des résultats, manifestant différentes contributions en fonction du champ électrique. Des caractérisations par PFM (microscopie à force piézoélectrique) confirme l’existence de domaines ferroélectriques de directions opposées. Il est aussi montré que le champ coercitif dépend fortement de la fréquence de travail. D’autre part, les propriétés d’impression dépendent de l’électrode supérieure, de la nature du recuit et de l’épaisseur de l’électrode inférieure. p>With the intensive use of modern microelectronic devices in numerous areas, there is an increasing demand for non-volatile memories. ▼ In heart failure (HF), the heart is unable to pump effectively in order to satisfy the demands of the body. The elevated filling pressure seen in HF leads to accumulation of fluid in the lungs, i.e pulmonary congestion. While investigation with chest X-ray is recommended, it has limitations in detecting pulmonary congestion. Ventilation/perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (V/P SPECT), i.e tomographic lung scintigraphy, is a promising method to diagnose and quantify pulmonary congestion in HF but needs to be validated by invasive right-heart catheterization. The variation of the blood volume in the pulmonary circulation measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may also have the potential to quantify the severity of HF.The general aim of this thesis was to develop and validate new non-invasive methods to diagnose and quantify pulmonary congestion and variation of the pulmonary blood flow in patients with HF, as well as to follow-uppulmonary congestion.Paper I revealed that the degree of pulmonary congestion in HF could be diagnosed and quantified using V/P SPECT. It was validated with right-heart catheterization. V/P SPECT was more accurate than chest X-ray in diagnosing pulmonary congestion in HF.In Paper II V/P SPECT showed that the pulmonary perfusion pattern was improved and that V/P SPECT could be used to follow treatment effect after heart transplantation in patients with HF and quantify the degree of pulmonarycongestion. It was validated with right-heart catheterization.Paper III demonstrated that V/P SPECT could be used to follow treatment effect and assess the degree of pulmonary congestion in patients with HF after receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). V/P SPECT was associated with improvement in patients’ symptoms.Paper IV showed that the pulmonary blood volume variation differed between patients with HF and healthy controls. In patients with HF, approximately 40% of the variation could be explained by the left ventricular longitudinal contribution to stroke volume and the phase shift between the in- and outflow to the pulmonary circulation. The remaining variation (60%) likely occur on a small vessel level.In summary, pulmonary congestion in HF is difficult to quantify objectively. The non-invasive methods V/P SPECT and MRI might add complementary information in the diagnosis of HF. V/P SPECT can be used to follow treatment effects after heart transplantation and CRT and may have a role in avoiding invasive right-heart catheterization in selected cases and aid in treatment decision.

▼ Este trabalho apresenta novos métodos analíticos e computacionais para a avaliação da segurança da operação de sistemas elétricos de potência considerando os Limites de Estabilidade Angular e de Tensão. No tema Estabilidade Angular, desenvolveu-se um método para a estimativa de margens de segurança transitória baseado em técnicas de redução de redes e geradores coerentes. O desvio de velocidade angular foi o critério usado para identificar geradores que oscilam juntos. A redução foi realizada substituindo-se dois grupos de geradores coerentes por um sistema Equivalente Máquina-Barra Infinita. Com este equivalente, os tempos críticos de abertura de falta e as margens de segurança são calculados com auxílio do Critério das Áreas Iguais. Os resultados encontrados foram muito satisfatórios quando comparados com aqueles obtidos por outros métodos, especialmente os que utilizam a função energia como função de Lyapunov. O método também foi aplicado para a estimativa de margens de segurança e tempos críticos de abertura de falta, em sistemas de potência na presença de geração eólica. Foi demonstrado que o método proposto é capaz de selecionar contingências críticas que precisam ser estudadas com modelos completos de modo a reproduzir o comportamento real do sistema elétrico. Com relação à Estabilidade Tensão, foi desenvolvido um método analítico e computacional para análise de estabilidade estática de tensão no plano P-Q. Primeiramente, o método foi aplicado em um sistema de potência simples com duas barras, e os resultados analíticos e computacionais foram comparados. Então, um Índice de Estabilidade de Tensão foi deduzido, para determinar a margem de segurança de cada barra para qualquer estado de operação de um sistema de potência com n-barras. Com o Índice de Estabilidade de Tensão, é possível identificar barras críticas e regiões com tendência ao colapso de tensão. Os limites de estabilidade de tensão de um sistema de distribuição foram analisados através das curvas P-Q , no qual foram considerados diferentes cenários de operação da geração eólica. Deste modo, foi demonstrado que a geração eólica pode contribuir para melhorar as margens de segurança de tensão. ▼ La ricerca è dedicata all’analisi della poesia e della poetica di Mnasalce di Sicione, epigrammatista greco della metà del III sec. a.C. La prima parte del lavoro consiste in un’introduzione generale relativa a tutti gli aspetti più importanti concernenti il poeta e la sua opera: dati biografici e cronologia; fonti degli epigrammi, con particolare attenzione a P. Köln V 204; sottogeneri epigrammatici coltivati; lingua e stile; usi metrici e prosodici. La seconda parte, che costituisce il corpo principale della tesi, è invece dedicata all’analisi dei singoli epigrammi, disposti secondo un criterio tematico. Il corpus esaminato consta di ventiquattro componimenti, di cui due dubbi; rispetto alle precedenti edizioni commentate di W. Seelbach (1964) e di A.S.F. Gow e D.L. Page (1965), esso risulta ampliato da cinque nuovi epigrammi conservati da P. Köln V 204 e dal dubbio SGO I 06/02/05. Di ciascun componimento si presenta il testo, corredato di traduzione e apparato critico, e, dopo una breve introduzione, il commento lemmatico, volto a evidenziare le relazioni di transtestualità intessute da Mnasalce e gli elementi di continuità e innovazione rispetto alla tradizione epigrammatica, sia letteraria che epigrafica. Il lavoro comprende inoltre un index verborum. p>The research is focused on the poetry and poetics of Mnasalces of Sicyon, a Greek epigrammatist of the middle of the III century B.C. The first part of the dissertation is a general introduction that deals with all the most important aspects concerning the poet and his work: biographical information and chronology; sources of the epigrams, with particular attention to P. Köln V 204; epigrammatic subgenres; language and style; metrics and prosody. The second part, which represents the main body of the dissertation, is devoted to the analysis of the epigrams, arranged thematically. The examined corpus consists of twenty-four poems, including two dubia; the corpus of the previous editions by W. Seelbach (1964) and A.S.F. Gow and D.L. Page (1965) is thus enriched by five new epigrams from P. Köln V 204 and the dubium SGO I 06/02/05. The critical text of each poem is followed by a translation, a brief introduction and a word-by-word commentary, aimed at investigating the elements of transtextuality and those of continuity and innovation in relation to the epigrammatic tradition, both literary and epigraphic. Après une introduction dédiée à l’état de l’art des machines moléculaires, le premier chapitre s’intéresse à la conception de tourniquets moléculaires à base de complexes porphyriniques de P(V). Le mouvement moléculaire a pu être contrôlé de manière réversible soit par l’utilisation des sites de coordination présents à la périphérie du système soit par des variations de pH. Le deuxième chapitre s’intéresse aux propriétés photophysiques des porphyrines de P(V) obtenues et plus particulièrement à leur capacité à générer de l’oxygène singulet avec une application potentielle en Thérapie Photodynamique (PDT).Le troisième chapitre concerne l’élaboration d’un complexe contenant deux porphyrines de Zn(II) dont le mouvement relatif a pu être bloqué réversiblement par l’utilisation des positions axiales des cations métalliques. p>The manuscript focuses on molecular machines and the control of their movement. Two different devices have been designed, synthetized and characterized. Moreover, a series of new potential photosensitizer was obtained.The introduction gives a general overview on molecular machines, reported during the past 20 years. The first chapter describes the synthesis of molecular turnstiles based on P(V) porphyrins. The molecular motion was controlled reversibly using either coordination chemistry or by changing the pH. The second part is dedicated to the study of the photophysical properties of P(V) porphyrins and especially their capacity to generate singlet oxygen under irradiation., making them potential photosensitizers that can be use in Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) or as catalyst. The third chapter is devoted to the study of a molecular break based on a Zn (II) porphyrin dimer. ▼ A duração da combustão tem implicação direta na determinação do trabalho negativo no ciclo motor. A duração da combustão tem relação inversa com a velocidade de propagação da chama. Assim, quanto maior a velocidade de propagação da chama, menor a duração da combustão. Além disto, a duração da combustão está relacionada com a relação volumétrica de compressão, com a razão de mistura e com o tipo de combustível, entre outros fatores. Neste sentido, quanto maior a velocidade de queima da mistura ar-combustível, menor o trabalho negativo no ciclo. Neste contexto, foram ensaiadas 3 relações de compressão e 3 razões de mistura, para 6 combustíveis de composição conhecida: gasolina comum tipo C, álcool etílico hidratado combustível (AEHC) e AEHC adicionado à gasolina comum tipo C nas proporções de 20%, 40%, 60% e 80%. A variação da pressão no interior da câmara de combustão, para todos os combustíveis, e a posição da centelha de ignição foram determinadas com a utilização da base angular e com variação da relação volumétrica de compressão e da razão de mistura. O diagrama , para fins de cálculo de área, foi traçado por pós-processamento. Os resultados obtidos indicam que a duração da combustão aumenta com o aumento da razão de mistura e diminui com o aumento da relação volumétrica de compressão, para todos os combustíveis ensaiados. Verificou-se que a amplitude da pressão, no interior da câmara de combustão, se comporta inversamente à duração da combustão. Mostrou-se que o aumento da razão de mistura implica na redução do trabalho líquido entregue ao êmbolo ao longo de todo o ciclo do motor. Opostamente ocorre com o aumento da relação volumétrica de compressão, que implica no aumento do trabalho líquido por ciclo. Concluiu-se que o máximo valor para o trabalho líquido ao longo de todo o ciclo foi obtido para a maior relação volumétrica de compressão (8:1) e a menor razão de mistura (λ = 0,9). O combustível que representou este resultado foi o álcool etílico hidratado combustível adicionado à gasolina comum tipo C em 80% (AEHC80). O mínimo valor para o trabalho líquido, ao longo de todo o ciclo foi obtido, para a menor relação volumétrica de compressão (6:1) e a maior razão de mistura dos ensaios (λ = 1,1). O combustível que representou este resultado foi o álcool etílico hidratado combustível (AEHC). p>The duration of the combustion is directly implicative on determining the negative work of the motor cycle. The duration of the combustion has an inverse relation with the flame propagation speed. Thus, the higher propagation of the flame, the shorter duration of the combustion. Besides that, the duration of the combustion is related to the relation of compression, to the air/fuel relation and to the type of fuel, among other factors. In this way, the higher burning speed of the air/fuel mixture, the smallest negative work in the cycle. ▼ Electrical and Computer Engineering - Nanoelectronics and Photonics / Elektrotehnika i računarstvo - Nanoelektronika i fotonika p>The dissertation presents a study of the electron and hole states in various semiconductor nanostructures using the k p formalism. Si/SiO2 quantum wells, GaAs/ (Al,Ga)As quantum wells, GaAs/(Al,Ga)As ringlike quantum dots grown by droplet epitaxy, and ringlike (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots formed by epitaxy in the Stranski-Krastanov mode are all considered. An overview of the techniques which are used to fabricate the analyzed nanostructures is first given. The most basic properties of the electronic structure of silicon and III-V compounds are briefly described. The fundamentals of the k p theory are explained, and then applied to derive the equations of the single-band effective-mass theory. The kp theory for degenerate energy levels, which is the case in the valence band of diamond and zinc-blende semiconductors, is then presented. By using the perturbation theory, the three-band Dresselhaus-Kip- Kittel model of the valence-band states is derived for the case of absent spin-orbit interaction. The spin-orbit interaction is taken into account in the 6-band Luttinger-Kohn model, whose derivation is also briefly described. The conduction and valence band states of wide band-gap direct semiconductors and their nanostructures are usually well described by the single-band effective-mass theory and the 6-band Luttinger-Kohn model, respectively. The mentioned k p models are well suited for low k states, whereas they cannot be straightforwardly adopted to model states which are far away from the G point. Such a situation arises in silicon, where low energy states in the conduction band have large k. The model which has recently been proposed to handle such a situation is the 30- band k p theory. It is the full-zone approach, which provides an accurate description of the electronic structure of both direct and indirect semiconductors in the whole Brillouin zone. ▼ AbstractNitrogenase is the only enzyme that can convert the inert nitrogen molecule to ammonia, so that it can be used for biomass production and in biosynthetic pathways. It contains a complicated acitve site, composed of eight metal ions, nine sulfur ions and one carbide ion (the FeMo cluster). Although it has been thoroughly studied with crystallographic, biochemical, kinetic, spectroscopic and computational methods, the reaction mechanism is still not known and many conflicting hypotheses have been presented. To solve some of these problems, we have performed a thorough and systematic study of nitrogenase with various computational approaches, based on a combination of quantum mechanics (QM), molecular mechanics (MM) and sometimes also crystallographic refinment. We have: • Decided the protonation states of eight key amino acid residues around the active site and showed that the homocitrate ligand is singly prontated on the hydroxide group. • Studied how the the broken-symmetry (BS) state for the FeMo cluster depends on the QM method, the basis sets, the surrounding protein and the protonation and oxidation state of the cluster. Thereby, we could propse a practical prodecure to deal with these states in computational studies.• Predicted the most stable protonation state for the E0–E4 states of nitrogenase with two density functional theory (DFT) methods: The TPSS functional perfers the protonation of Fe, whereas B3LYP prefers protonation of the carbide ion.• Showed that different DFT methods give relative eneriges that can differ by ~1100 kJ/mol for nitrogenase. This is the main reason for the diverging computational results. Pure functionals and TPSSh predict the best geometries of the E0 state, whereas B3LYP and PBE0 give more reliable H2 dissociation energies.• Showed that the most stable E4 structure obtained with pure functionals has two hydride ions bridging between two pairs of iron ions and two protons on the sulfide ions, in agreement with experiments. We also found a new low-energy BS state in which only two Fe ions have minority spin.• Predicted that the most stable binding mode of N2H2 to nitrogenase involves trans-HNNH binding to Fe2. However, other binding modes, e.g. involving cis-HNNH or NNH2 and binding to Fe6, are rather low in energy. • Suggested an alternating reaction mechanism for nitrogenase with a dissociated S2B ligand.• Decided the most stable BS states for the P-cluster in four oxidation states and showed that the one-electron oxidised state involves a protonated Cys-88, but a deprotonated Ser-188.• Developed a novel quantum-refinement approach allowing for disorder in the QM system and applied it to the P-cluster in two crystal structures of nitrogenase.• Shown by quantum refinement that a recent crystal structure of V-nitrogenase does not involve a N-derived ligand, but rather a hydride-inhibited state with a significant amount of the undissociated S2B ligand.Together, these studies have taken us a significant step closer to an atomic understanding of nitrogenase, showing that…
